“It makes me feel less scared. Like when I’m hungry, I have something I can eat. When we don’t have enough money, I know I have my BackPack food. That makes me very, very happy,” says a young recipient of the BackPack Food Program.
Hunger has many faces and “the struggle” is real for many. No two stories or circumstances are the same. It is Feeding Our Communities Partners’ (FOCP) commitment to serve with dignity and to reduce and eliminate the stigma attached to food insecurity. A hand up for one, or a thousand, benefits our entire community.
FOCP began in 2010 when a group of community members gathered to address the alarmingly high levels of youth food insecurity in our local region. The numbers were distressing and action to feed students without access to food outside of school hours was necessary on a local level. Powered by the community, the BackPack
Food Program launched as a huge endeavor in a meager place–a dining room with a table full of child-friendly, nutritious meals, and snacks.
The food discreetly traveled from that dining room into the lockers and backpacks of 36 Franklin Elementary students each week during the school year, leaving no barrier to food access. The child-friendly and nutritious meals were provided at no cost to those enrolled and were intended to support students on weekends and school breaks when access to free and reduced school breakfast and lunch were not available.
Through community partnerships, volunteers and donors, the dining room table that was initially used was much too small to prepare the food packs that were eagerly awaited by a growing number of enrolled elementary students. More and more elementary schools and students enrolled and the food packs kept piling up. FOCP’s efforts were

moved into larger spaces to meet the growing need. Eventually, the efforts required a small staff, a nutrition committee, a dedicated distribution team, an army of dedicated volunteers and community financial support.
By 2014, the BackPack Food Program had outgrown its small beginning and was serving eight elementary schools in the Mankato Area Public School District. With the assistance of many area partners, FOCP moved into a double warehouse suite at 2120 Howard Drive West in North Mankato. Since 2014, the program offerings and service area has continued to grow exponentially year after year.
FOCP continues to meet the diverse needs of developing elementary, middle, and high school students in 30 school buildings in five area school districts. With community support, FOCP’s small staff of seven even expanded their services to year-round services including pivotal nutrition to youth during summer months when food access can be even more limited. Since the organization’s inception, over 2.25 million meals have been distributed to youth in the greater Mankato area.
What makes FOCP so unique is that it is 100% locally funded and supported. Every dollar goes right back into supporting neighborhood youth in our local communities. It’s more than just food. The impact of hunger and food insecurity on children is particularly profound at every age. Food insecurity has a negative impact on the physical, mental and psychosocial development of children. Malnourishment negatively affects the cognitive development of children, resulting in a loss of knowledge, brainpower and productivity.
Food security data shows that households with children tend to be the most food insecure. Securing long-term stability, security, health and well-being is at the center of the struggle that parents and caregivers face,
A parent recently shared with FOCP: “We struggle to keep enough food in the house for everyone. I feed my child before me. She needs the food way more than me. I work full-time, but it just isn’t
enough to cover bills and food. Somehow, we make too much money for other food support programs. Struggles are real. This program has saved us big time. And to have this program in the summer is amazing since I am laid off in the summertime. Thank you, thank you for the extra support.”
Recently, in 2022, FOCP served a record number of youths for the extended winter break distribution. Over 850 area students received a large box full of shelf-stable foods as well as refrigerated and frozen foods, bread, vouchers for milk and fresh fruit, and books for youth in grades K-6. These deliveries were made by over 80 community volunteers delivering the boxes directly to families’ doorsteps. These efforts are momentous because the holiday season should be a time of joy and gathering and families should not spend the break worried about where and when their next meal will come from.
More important than the high numbers and scope of the services though, is the impact of these services. Last school year, teachers surveyed reported a difference in the quality of life for students enrolled in FOCP programs. The top three improvements observed were increased energy levels, improved emotional health and enhanced ability to concentrate. Additionally, teachers reported an improvement in school attendance.
By providing food as the basic fuel necessary for performance in school, activities and life, it is the hope that the dreams of today's youth become the reality of their future, regardless of current circumstance. After more than a decade, FOCP continues to lead a community collective in the mission to solve youth hunger. Our communities are continuously changing, and it takes the commitment and support of partners, volunteers and donors to ensure that. Annually, FOCP initiatives are supported by over 2,000 volunteers, over 400 partners, and countless donors. These efforts are not only filling plates, they are filling hearts.
One local student shared: “The BackPack Food Program makes me feel like there are people that really care about me.”

All in the family, this father and his two sons continue building community in North Kato.
weather turns to spring, North Mankato residents are eagerly anticipating the warmer weather, the flowers blooming and the sound of pounding nails and buzzing saws as the construction season ramps back up.
North Mankato is home to several booming construction companies. One such company is founded, directed, run and employed by a father and two sons that take pride in their service, experience and professionalism.
Ardolf Construction Services (ACS) LLC was founded in 2020 by Tyler, Brian and Josh Ardolf. They are a familyowned business that provides general contracting and home remodeling to residents in Mankato, Madelia and surrounding areas in Minnesota.
“Our story started with my father, Brian, who has been in the construction and building industry for over 35 years,” says Josh.
Although they haven’t officially had their own business for too long, they more than make up for it in experience. With a combined 60-plus years of experience between the family, there is no secondguessing the reason the company is growing exponentially.
“Our company’s success is attributed to the relationship we have built with our clients and their strong referrals. At ACS, we know the quality of the next reference will only be as good as the quality of the job we perform today. More than 80% of ACS clients are repeat business and more than 90% of new clients are the result of direct referrals from existing clients,” Josh says.
Based out of their home address on Pleasant View Drive in North Mankato, they specialize in residential and commercial construction, whether it’s new construction or remodels.
“Whether you’re considering remodeling a single room such as a kitchen or bathroom remodel, building a commercial suite, or looking to rebuild your home from the ground up, our team can help guide you through the process seamlessly. We are both a general contractor and specialty contractor, along with a great team of tradespeople we work with,” adds Josh.
He says North Mankato is a special place for his family and his business because of the strong sense of community felt throughout the area.
“North Mankato is a special place to ACS as it is our central point to all our projects and customers. Our business exists due to the ongoing support of the community and without them we wouldn’t be where we are today,” Josh says.
That community support has helped them grow and prosper, even during the worldwide challenges of the last few years. COVID has changed the nature of the work they do, especially in the construction industry. Supply chain issues, inflation and high demand are just a few of the challenges felt by the construction industry.
“The supply and demand have taken a hit and most of us are still trying to keep our heads above water. Given the nature of our job we had to be very flexible with the ongoing changes in the industry, which includes delayed shipments, inflated prices as well as lack of availability with sub-contractors. Patience, perseverance, and teamwork has assisted us in navigating these challenges,” he says.
But even with the challenges that have hit every industry nationwide, Josh and his family have always kept an upbeat and positive attitude.
“We love to see the smiling faces of our customers knowing that rebuilds and remodels can be stress-inducing. At ACS, our reputation with our clients is the cornerstone of our company and as such the most rewarding piece is seeing and hearing happy customers,” Josh says.
ACS is closing in on 1,000 customers. But more than numbers, their reputation is built on the volumes of satisfied customers.
“In the construction industry, repeat and referral business speak volumes for quality work, fair pricing and personal care. We are thankful to see growth and support from the community. We are very grateful for our customers as our business continues to grow,” Josh adds.
Customers can send an inquiry through www.ardolfconstruction.com or they can follow them at one of their social media pages to browse through current and past projects.

something you won’t find often in a backyard in south central Minnesota. So, when Cal and Linnea Wilson started building one in their North Mankato backyard, it drew some attention.
“People do wonder if we have a smoker in our back yard, but it’s mostly been a low-key addition to our home. We’ve found that the social aspect of the sauna has really been the biggest unforeseen benefit. It’s not often enough that you can sit down with likeminded folks and engage in a common interest without the normal distractions of day-to-day life. Sitting inside of a sauna has a way of moving your focus to what’s right in front of you,” says Cal Wilson.
The Wilson family, Cal, Linnea and their three kids, lead active lifestyles. Having their own sauna adds to their healthy way of life.
“We had begun a backyard renovation and really just started dreaming without any limits. After many iterations, changes and difficult decisions, we eventually ended up including the sauna in our final plans. We had limited prior experience with saunas from health clubs and hotels, but those ended up being mere echoes of what we were to soon discover. Our authentic Finnish sauna sports a Kuuma wood-burning stove and a completely cedar interior that acts as our backyard health and wellness escape. It’s our place to relax and unwind, both physically and mentally. There’s something very primal about the heat and cold. We enjoy a connection to the natural world in a space of tranquility, fun and relaxation...
and we Minnesotans need more outdoor activities to enjoy in the cold winter months!” says Cal. Even the process of installing the sauna was a worthwhile experience.
“Upon some urging from my brother-in-law, I purchased an eBook called ‘Build Your Own Sauna’ by Minneapolis native Glenn Auerbach that acted as a step-by-step guide from start-tofinish. It was a huge inspiration and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone else looking to do the same. We were in the middle of COVID lockdown in the Fall of 2020 with little else to do on nights and weekends, so I went to work. I had help from a number of folks, but little-by-little we inched closer and closer until when we enjoyed our first sauna session on March 21 of 2021,” says Cal.
The Wilsons are certainly on to something. Experts widely agree and much has been made of the health benefits of using a sauna. Physically, experts agree, nothing is more reinvigorating than a deep, healthy sweat every day.
In general, experts say, sitting in a sauna can increase your circulation and relax tense muscles. The act of taking a moment and relaxing can be a useful tool for relieving stress, which has its own slew of health benefits. Saunas have also been connected to improved cardiovascular health.

Belgrade Avenue in lower North Mankato is home to bars, restaurants, home goods and even a med spa clinic. Christina Butler knew that amidst all of those other locallyowned businesses, there would be room for one more. A healthy, fast-food option to add into the mix. She opened Game On Nutrition in February of 2020, a mom on a mission.
“We want North Katoans to know we have one mission and that is to help make this world happier and healthier on all levels— physically by providing good nutrition and mentally by knowing we are a safe place, a loving place, a welcoming place,” says Butler. “We try to make you leave happier then when you came in.”
Butler owned a nutrition club in Le Sueur but saw opportunity and fell in love with the culture along Belgrade.
“We chose North Mankato because we believe in a healthy variety of fast-food options and we knew North Mankato could use a healthy option,” she says. “We offer delicious meal replacement shakes that you wouldn’t even believe are healthy for you because they taste so good! We also offer energy teas, that you will be surprised are labeled as a “tea.” They boost metabolism and provide you with healthy energy. We also offer wellness coaching with our at home programs for weight loss, daily nutrition, and weight gain.”
The healthy options she offers are founded on Herbalife products.
“I became interested in Herbalife after utilizing the products for a couple years and seeing great results. I wanted to share that excitement with friends, family, and strangers. I was then exposed to other nutrition clubs in our team and fell in love with offering a healthy fast food that helps people live a healthier lifestyle. The people I meet, the friendships that are built, helping people meet goals such as being able to have the energy to play with their kids to losing the weight to get down to their children’s levels.”
Children are another thing that sets Game On apart, they are welcome there. Butler even hosts events so moms can enjoy socializing with their shakes, while the kids engage in organized activities.
“Our best surprise, I would say is how involved and welcoming our customers are with our two little boys,” she says. “We have a very family-oriented business and watching our customers build relationships with us and our children is the best feeling ever.”
Game On Nutrition is located at 300 Belgrade Avenue. For more on events hosted at Game On and to learn more about their menu, find them on Facebook.

SAY GOODBYE TO INFLAMMATION
Inflammation happens when a physical ailment in the body elicits an immune response. It can happen to anyone; inflammation occurs when the body is trying to protect itself from an infection, injury or even a disease. To fight off inflammation, a combination of food and vitamin supplementation can help.
Here’s a quick breakdown of food and supplement options to include:
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS
Omega-3s are healthy fats proven to play a part in helping the immune system and decreasing inflammation.
Salmon is an excellent animal source of omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts are a go-to source for plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, and are the only nut that contains a significant amount of this essential nutrient.
If you aren’t getting two servings of fatty fish per week, fish oil supplementation could be a great option.
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
The recommendation for daily consumption of fruits and vegetables is 5 servings per day, but you can take it up a notch. Increasing to 5 to 11 servings per day may help fight the inflammation that you may be feeling.
Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, broccolini, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and kale) contain certain plant nutrients that help decrease inflammation by contributing to the environment of the intestinal cell walls.
Also focus on leafy greens (chard, collards, lettuce, mustard greens, spinach), legumes (black beans, chickpeas, kidney, navy, peas, pinto, soy beans), citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges, lemons, limes), berries (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries), and beta-carotene foods (apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, mangoes, pumpkin, sweet potatoes).
SPICES
Turmeric, the yellow spice in curry powder, has been used for many ailments. Some research indicates that curcumin (a phytochemical) may reduce inflammation in the body. Additional spices that may decrease inflammation include ginger, clove, cinnamon, black pepper and cayenne.
INGREDIENTS

This Sautéed Chard and Eggs provides extra greens and vegetables, along with omega-3 fatty acids from eggs. It’s a double dose, anti-inflammatory recipe that you could eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Cut chard leaves crosswise into 1-inch ribbons; set aside. Spread chard mixture to sides of skillet; crack eggs in the center. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until whites are cooked. Use a spatula to gently transfer eggs and chard to dinner plates. Sprinkle with bacon crumbles. Serve immediately.
In a large nonstick skillet, heat olive oil on medium-high heat. Add onion, mushrooms, and garlic. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until onions are softened. Add chard to skillet. Use tongs to turn the leaves over in the pan to coat with some of the olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Drizzle with vinegar.

The IRS has announced several adjustments for 2023 that may affect you, including changes to capital gains tax rates, annual exclusion for gifts, estate tax exclusion, contribution limit increases, RMD age changes, and more. Below you will find general tax tips, considerations, and important deadlines dates.
Quick Tips:
• Review Paycheck tax withholdings: If you are consistently receiving a large tax refund or having to pay in, consider adjusting your withholdings.
• Maximize contributions: The IRS increased contributions limits for many retirement accounts; Consult with your tax professional and financial advisor to ensure that you are maximizing your contributions and the types of accounts you are contributing to.
2023 contribution limits for retirement plans are:
IRA/Roth IRA are $6,500
For those over the age of 50 the catch-up contribution remains at $1,000.
401K & 403B is $22,500
For those over the age of 50 the catch-up contributions are $7,500.
Simple IRA contributions limits are $15,500
For those over age 50 the catch-up contributions of $3,500.
• Required Minimum Distributions (RMD): The IRS changed the RMD age requirement to age 73 for 2023 and will increase again to age 75 in 2033. Withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income and, if taken before age 59 ½, may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty. Confirm with your financial professional if you are required to take a distribution from a retirement account.
• Maintain Your Tax Records: You should keep tax return records for 3 years unless one of the following applies: you claimed a loss, failed to report income, or don’t file a return. In these cases, you should maintain records for 7+ years and should consult with your tax professional.
Important deadline dates
January 15, 2023
Fourth-quarter estimated tax payments must be postmarked to IRS.
April 18, 2023
Individual tax returns due, or you must file an extension. It’s also the last day to make 2022 IRA/Roth IRA contributions.

New Boutique Brings More Options to North Mankato
Winton + Co Boutique is a place for everyone to feel they belong. It will give you the feeling of being in an exclusive environment but is inclusive to all shapes, sizes and styles. That is the hope and dream of two ladies, already well-known in the North Mankato business community. Winton + Co was started by two best friends who are also the owner, Tiffany Ward, and manager, Cherre Metcalf, of Indulge Salon and Tanning.
“We’ve been hosting other boutiques and jewelers in the salon for a couple years now and our guests love it,” says Ward. “You will find pieces that include casual, athletic, business, and date night, along with many accessories and jewelry. We are looking to provide a fun place to shop for all the vacationers, golfers, and pickleball players in our area as well. It’s the perfect neighbor to Indulge Salon & Tanning.”
Tiffany and Nick Ward purchased the building last year and thought more boutique space would be a great idea. So, they approached Cherre and her fiancé, Christopher Hinton, to see if they would like to open the business together. Cherre has a great eye for style and design, Chris has vast experience with building management, and Nick and Tiffany are both financially savvy and round out a perfect team.
“Upper North Mankato really has a need for more retail options and this helps to fill the gap,” says Tiffany. “We are excited to get started and serve the North Mankato community.”
Tiffany’s mantra is, “When one succeeds, we all succeed.” Indulge will still continue to host other pop-ups and are also hoping this drives more business to the other retailers in Upper North.
“We see it as a win for all!” she says.
Winton + Co. is located at 1715 Commerce Drive. You enter through Indulge Salon and Tanning.

This year the shift to warmer tones continues in a big way. The many years of grays, whites, and cooler tones dominating homes are going away to make room for a softer, warmer color palette. The Sherwin Williams paint color of the year for 2023 is called “Redend Point” – a soft, sophisticated, neutral. Beige & tan interiors used to get a bad rap for being bland and boring, but in 2023 we are seeing other trends that will help to offset this negative stereotype of basic beige! Dark, natural wood trim and furniture are back in a big way, which brings contrast and depth to the space. Deep browns, rich jewel tones, and moody blues are going to be everywhere, again offering a richness to any beige room.

One of my favorite ways to lighten up a space in the spring and infuse a pop of trendiness without breaking the bank, is by switching up things like toss pillows, bedding, and area rugs. I have different rugs for my entry way for different seasons. I use darker, heavier rugs in the fall/winter and a runner by the coat closet to catch all of the dirt and muck. In the spring and summer, I swap them out for a brightly colored, larger area rug adding a pop of color right when you walk in the front door. Shop for trendy pillows to swap out on your sofa or bed, and lighten up your bedding by switching to a quilt or duvet cover that’s not so heavy.

The trend of exploring our creativity, hobbies, and pastimes in recent years due to being at home more, has spilled over into the home design industry in the form of creating rooms dedicated to these things. Whether it be a listening room – AKA a room for listening to & storing music – a craft room, a mediation room, or a dance studio, creating space for these hobbies in our homes is not going away. Don’t have an extra room? Consider a corner of a room, or a blank wall, or a closet… where in your home can you carve out a space for something you love? Another way to embrace this trend is by swapping out your mass-produced artwork, or department store accessories with something handmade by you or a loved one, or locally curated pieces that express your personal style and showcase your personality.
During uncertain and unstable times, we gravitate towards things that are familiar and comforting. Nostalgic design or “Grandpa Chic” as it’s being dubbed, is a really exciting style because it is all about individual memories of past spaces. We are seeing textured and patterned wallpapered rooms, vintage furniture pieces, retro colors like greens and browns, and other nostalgic touches like skirted kitchen sinks. It’s important to infuse some youthfulness into the space to create a balanced and modern look, such as a contemporary piece of artwork or more modern accent tables.
This is probably my favorite “trend” but one that I have been embracing for a long time. In recent years we have all been home a lot more – sometimes more than we’d like to be! But this has caused a shift in the design world, a shift towards less perfectly put together spaces, and more lived-in, relaxed, and inviting homes. Gone are the days of the perfectly staged kitchens with nothing on the counters. People who actually cook in their kitchens know that this is not realistic. We’re seeing open shelves lined with spices, cookbooks, and plants, cutting boards leaned against the backsplash, coffee makers and toasters just hanging out. Color-coded bookshelves and perfectly curated items are so last year. Bookshelves, ledges, and tables should be sort-of messy (this doesn’t mean dusty or dirty!), full of games and books that your family actually uses and reads, meaningful items and treasures, and other items that are used daily.
This spring and this year are all about creating a space that is comfortable, warm, personal, and cozy. What excites me most about these trends is that it allows for everyone to create their own style and to create a space that works for them. It’s not about being on trend or re-creating looks that you see in magazines – it’s about being inspired by our own lives, things we love, and things we are passionate about. Have fun freshening up your space this spring and creating a home that you love!
Styles that will take you from the beach to the bar will be popular. Linen, the wrap dress, the thong sandal, lightweight sheers, and silk, all of these items that have comfort in mind!
Think: never ending summer!
Clothing with leaves, vibrant florals, and rare plants are in for spring/ summer. Natural colors and natural textures are also in. Nature is universal and gives us a sense that we're all connected.
Think: halter midi dress with extralarge blooms or animal stripes mixed with natural colors.
There is a trend in purchasing fewer, but higher quality items. Look for items that can take you from your daytime job to an evening out.
Think: business casual bomber jacket, the front-tie blouse, a great cami, the ballet flat, detachable embellishments, pleats, and ruching.
Products that eliminate waste through better calculations of material needs are becoming more and more popular.
Think: natural materials, raw hemlines, craft-inspired prints and crochet details.

Closure.
It’s something we all say we need in certain situations; but what happens if it never comes?
It’s described as “ambiguous loss,” a phrase coined in the 1970s by professor Pauline Boss, PhD. Ambiguous loss is any loss that occurs without closure. It can occur when we lose someone or something we love without a clear understanding of why it happened. One way of experiencing ambiguous loss is when someone is not physically there but is present in your thoughts. This can occur with war, kidnappings or natural disasters. One example we are all familiar with is our experience of living through the COVID-19 pandemic. Ambiguous loss can also occur when there is the loss through situations such as incarceration, adoption, divorce and estrangement. In these situations, the person whose absence you’re experiencing is still alive in the world, but our connection to them has been altered (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).
Other times there is a loss without a lack of physical presence but through the psychological absence of someone or when they are emotionally unavailable. This may be due to diseases such as dementia, alcoholism or substance use disorders, traumatic brain injuries, mental illness, miscarriage, foster care placement, dreams or plans changing, suicide or infant loss (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).
Due to our brain’s hardwiring, it seeks to understand the “why” by trying to organize where the information is to be stored. Without the closure, many sit in limbo or in this grief, unsure of how to move forward. They experience denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.
In the aftermath of the loss, it’s easy to numb out the emotions or distract yourself with working, unhelpful habits, or social media (Ryder, 2022). I once heard when we numb out the bad, we numb out the good too. Dr. Boss would advocate that feeling the emotions and finding ways to express the emotions through creativity and support is part of the grieving experience.
I hope this column plants a seed of understanding for yourself and experiences in your life where you feel you are lacking closure in something and why it may be feeling awful. You are not alone. It’s important to reach out to professionals to help you identify some areas of focus, to feel supported, to know you are NOT crazy for how you’re feeling, and to learn ways to move forward in the healing process.
Books to check out on the subject include Dr. Boss's most famous book, Ambiguous Loss: Learning to Live with Unresolved Grief (Harvard University Press, 1999) or Loss, Trauma, and Resilience: Therapeutic Work with Ambiguous Loss (W.W. Norton, 2006) (Ambiguous Loss, n.d.).
As readers have heard me say before, therapy is for everyone! It is not a one-size-fits-all and the fit between a clinician and the client often matters more than the modality used. You don’t have to wait until symptoms or emotions are unbearable to seek the support you may need. Humans are not immune to loss. It’s important to remember you are not alone and there are people out there willing to listen and support you.

In 1945, Sweet Adelines International was first established in Oklahoma as an organization of women singers. The purpose was to promote and feature harmony-style singing and choral performance. Some thirty years later, the Kato area produced its own Sweet Adelines-chartered group that made its debut contest performance in 1975. Directed by Carol Grimmer, it was called the Minnesota Valley Chorus.
With various members coming and going, the chorus has now sung through nearly half a century, giving colorful performances and navigating through the recent pandemic to keep the music alive. Recently, North Kato mag conducted interviews with five different ladies connected with Minnesota Valley Chorus: Patti Dykema (current director), Mary Lou Kudela (a charter member), Lori Scott (management team lead coordinator), Lori Christiansen (management team secretary), and Melissa Sailor (public relations chair). Responses have been edited for content and space.
What drew you to singing in the Sweet Adelines?
Patty Dykema: Singing with my mom, who was one of the charter members of the chorus. It was a way to bond with my mother through our mutual love of singing.
Mary Lou Kudela: My aunt was a musician and organist, and with her five daughters and my mom and another aunt, we sang around the piano in the days before TV and iPods. I had sung in school and church choirs in New York, but when I moved to Mankato, I didn’t know where to find a singing
group. Then I heard from our first director, Carol Grimmer, that she was interested in starting a Sweet Adelines chorus. I was looking for friendship as well as singing, so I thought, “Hey, this is a way to get in on the ground floor!” So, I was her first recruit in 1973. As I look back on my 47 years of singing harmony, I can say it was and is one of my best decisions for an uplifting lifelong pursuit.
Lori Scott: I love singing harmony. Singing a cappella harmony (without any instruments) is the purest form of making harmony. Sweet Adelines is always a cappella with four-part harmony.
Lori Christiansen: I had experienced a cappella, four-part barbershop harmony while singing in a quartet in high school. Not only did I enjoy the sound of ringing chords, but I also liked singing to an audience. I attended college in Mankato, and once I heard there was a Sweet Adelines chorus here, I eagerly sought more information. Thirty-four years later, I’m still singing with the Minnesota Valley Chorus.
Melissa Sailor: I've wanted to be a Sweet Adeline since I was in fifth grade. Once my kids were grown enough to be left alone for a few hours, I joined the group.
What's one of the best things about being in the Sweet Adelines?
Lori Scott: We enjoy singing together at our weekly rehearsals. But it’s more than that. We also perform in many situations, including putting together entertaining shows,
44 NORTH KATO MAGAZINE SPRING 2023
singing for Sunday morning services, holiday shows and caroling, annual judged competitions, public or community events, and teaching and encouraging youth about this art form. Sweet Adelines is a wonderful sisterhood. I started in 2006 in one town. Since then, I moved twice. Each time I moved, I joined a new, local chorus and was immediately embraced by a new circle of friends.
Patty Dykema: Singing together a cappella with three other people and knowing that chords will ring. Hearing the overtone when we're all singing correctly gives me goose bumps. Trust me, it is the coolest thing ever!
Lori Christiansen: One of the best things about singing in our chorus is the camaraderie with women of various ages, occupations, and stages of life. The common thread is our love for singing.
Melissa Sailor: I love harmony, and I love to sing. The part I love best about being a Sweet Adeline is when we have learned our songs and are about to perform in front of people.
Mary Lou Kudela: I love the diversity of music, talents, learning new skills, and meeting people in my own community as well as from around the world. For a while, I served as a Sweet Adelines International Faculty member who was invited to teach other choruses in the United States about topics such as presentation skills, building a management team, or how to emcee or write a script for staging a show. Not only did I travel, meet new people, and make new friends, I also learned much in my research and preparation of a topic. It was endlessly creative.
How has being in this group changed over the years? Is there an element or two that sustains you—or maybe something new that inspires you?
Mary Lou Kudela: While Sweet Adelines grew out of the American vaudeville barbershop style, the organization broadened to sing songs from Broadway shows and movies, pop and gospel, to current favorites and original music as developed by modern arrangers and songwriters. Today, the emphasis is on reaching out with authentic performance to our audience that has a need for its own inspiration, something to lift up their lives and show them we are one in song. That meaningful audience connection gives me hope and fulfillment.
Lori Scott: In the past five years or so, the Sweet Adelines organization has made a strong effort to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion. There was a time when this was not the case, and the organization wants to remedy this. One manifestation is a process to evaluate songs (lyrics as well as general history) to ensure that we don’t sing songs that offend or exclude people of any particular group. Another is to encourage participation by all races and orientations of women.
Lori Christiansen: Changes I have noticed during my time in the chorus are the style of music, the costumes (elegant and identical, or individually created wear based upon a given theme), and the fluctuation in the number of members. I continue to enjoy the unaccompanied sound we create as
a chorus or small quartet, and we can perform that sound anytime and anywhere with any other Sweet Adeline.
Melissa Sailor: I joined after competition in 2018, and I've only been to one competition (in 2019). COVID hit everyone in 2020, 2021, and 2022, and competitions were canceled. Finally this year (in April of 2023) we are back on to compete. For me, knowing we are always working towards competing is what sustains and keeps me going and doing my best each week.
Patty Dykema: Our organization is always teaching us how to become better singers and educating us on how to improve our sound. Once you get past the notes and the words, we can create music by using lyrical lines and really getting behind the emotion to tell the story to our audience. If we can make the audience laugh or cry, we've done our job.
Why do you think music is important to a healthy society or lifestyle?
Lori Christiansen: Learning and memorizing new music and choreography has its own mental rewards. Practicing and performing the results with others adds to the overall enjoyment of singing a cappella four-part harmony.
Melissa Sailor: I think singing and listening to music makes you remember times in your past and helps you reflect how that song touches your soul and your memories.
Lori Scott: Music provides the individual singer a physical, mental, and emotional activity, promoting their good health. It provides an opportunity to both experience joy and provide joy. Singing together in harmony allows us to practice positive interaction with others. The effort that goes into learning, perfecting, and performing our music is an experience we share with everyone else who is doing the same. This provides empathy and understanding toward others, as well as cooperation with those we work with, even admiration for our competitors.
Patty Dykema: Music uses a different part of the brain, and it releases endorphins. It gives you a chance to forget about what troubles you and just sing you're troubles away. Everybody is working toward a common goal, whether it's learning notes or words, choreography, or just learning to sing from your heart. Just imagine what the world could be of we all just worked together to create prefect harmony and peace in our corner of the universe.
Mary Lou Kudela: It is said that music is a universal language. It connects people and gives beauty and meaning to their lives. The uniqueness of each human voice in a chorus weaves together a human story. Each voice counts as each life counts.

BY VASAN RAMANUJA, MD Mankato Clinic Allergist
When trees, flowers, grasses and weeds come alive again and the pollen flies, many people suffer from seasonal allergies.
The Allergy & Asthma Network reports that one in five Americans are diagnosed with environmental allergies and more than 50% of those with allergies say symptoms impact their daily quality of life.
Nasal allergy symptoms ramp up when the body’s immune system overreacts to something in the environment, usually pollens and outdoor molds for those with seasonal allergies. The body makes chemicals called histamines which cause these symptoms.
• Sneezing
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Watery and itchy eyes
Itchy nose, throat or ear canals
• Sinus congestion
• Postnasal drip
Climate change and warmer temperatures will lead to both higher pollen concentrations and
longer pollen seasons, causing more people to suffer more health effects from seasonal allergies according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In fact, a study by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that pollen season was 20 days longer from 1998 to 2018, with pollen concentrations 20% higher in North America.
Here are the best ways to manage allergy symptoms.
Everyday habits
Follow these tips to reduce your exposure to allergens during spring, summer and fall.
Keep windows closed in your home and car when symptoms are worse.
After spending time outdoors, take a shower and wash or at least rinse your hair before bedtime.
• Change your clothes after working or playing outdoors.
• Limit time outdoors. Use Pollen.com to get daily reports. As a rule of thumb, pollen levels tend to peak at midday and surge on windy, warm days.
Antihistamines
Antihistamines reduce or block the histamines to stop the allergy symptoms. Popular antihistamines include cetirizine (Zyrtec), loratadine (Claritin) and fexofenadine (Allegra). While newer antihistamines tend to have less side effects, all medications carry side effects. Always read the label for side effects, drug interactions and dosage. If you’re unsure if an antihistamine is right for you, ask your primary care provider, pharmacist or allergist.
Steroid nasal sprays
Nasal sprays can be helpful when nasal symptoms are not adequately controlled by an oral antihistamine. Nasal sprays can target congestion, runny nose, nasal itching and sneezing. Steroid nasal sprays are available over-the-counter and by prescription. It usually takes a week before symptoms improve. Always read the label for side effects, interactions and directions. Your primary care provider, allergist or pharmacist can answer your questions about nasal sprays.
Allergy testing and shots
If your allergies are not under control or you’d like to learn your triggers, allergy testing is a good option. The preferred testing method is skin testing. Based on the results, environment control measures and medications can be prescribed. Allergy shots, known as allergen immunotherapy, may be advised. In immunotherapy, allergens are injected under the skin. With monthly shots given over a period of three to five years, the body builds up a tolerance or immunity to the allergen and the shots can be stopped. Immunotherapy works well for allergies to pollens from trees, grass and weeds, cats, dogs, dust mites and mold.
An allergist can help you identify your allergies and find relief.
