WO sisters of Mpanda village in Nsama district have admitted killing their uncle whom they accused of bewitching their father.

The girls aged 16 and 18 years have been charged with manslaughter and admitted the charge before the Kasama High Court.

This was after the state reduced the charge from murder to manslaughter.

In this case, the two girls, were in the first place charged with mur-

der, but when the matter came up yesterday in readiness for trial, the state made an application to reduce the charge.

Facts were that on June 11, last year the father of the girls, identified as Roberm Chomba, went to consult a traditional ‘doctor’ to find out the person who had bewitched him because he was getting sick more often.

Consequently, the traditional ‘doctor’ told their father that his brother, Peter Chomba, had bewitched him.

This infuriated their father who immediately went to confront

his brother and that in turn the two girls lost their tempers and started brutalising their uncle.

He sustained injuries and subsequently died.

Ndola based High Court Judge Davies Mumba who is sitting in the Kasama High Court, has reserved the matter to April 20, so that he

can make an appropriate order.

The two girls are remanded in custody at Kasama’s Milima Correctional Facility.

Chilangwa calls for energy efficiency sector in Luapula, Katanga Luapula Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa has called for strong collaboration between the Haut-Katanga region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Luapula province in Zambia to increase hydro power generation and other forms of energy.

Mr Chilangwa notes that lack of industrial energy has slowed down the economic progress of both Luapula province and the Haut-Katanga region.

ZANIS reports that this is contained in a joint

communique signed and issued by both Mr Chilangwa and his Lubumbashi counterpart Jacques Katwe after a bilateral meeting in Lubumbashi yesterday.

Mr Chilangwa has since invited his Haut - Katanga counterpart, Mr Katwe, to participate in the forthcoming first ever Luapula Energy Conference.

“The Luapula Energy Conference which was postponed due to Covid-19 last year, will now take place from April 26 -30 under the theme: Sustainable Energy for

Development Within and Beyond Luapula,’ Mr Chilanga informed Mr Katwe.

“The Energy Indaba will precede the Kasomeno-Mwenda toll road and Luapula Bridge Groundbreaking ceremony.” Mr Chilangwa added.

And Mr Katwe has Mr Chilangwa pledged his government support in ensuring that the energy Conference is a to work with Zambia’s success.

EMALE engineers in Zambia should be resilient and cope up with the uncertainties that have come with the Covid-19 pandemic, the Federation of African Organisations of Engineers (FAOE) has said.

FAOE president Carlien Dorcas Bou- Chedid said Covid-19 has

come with uncertainties, hence women engineers should be resilient.

She was speaking when she addressed the 3rd Zambia in Women in Engineering Section (ZWES) Conference in Livingstone yesterday ahead of the 65th Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) Symposium and Annual General in Livingstone's Avani Hotel yesterday.

Ms Chedid acknowledged that Africa still has a low number of female engineers compared to other regions.

She noted that countries need to train more female engineers adding that the reason why there were low numbers was not because of inability but rather social and cultural factors.

Earlier, EIZ president Able Ng'andu said women's active participation in leadership and decision-making was the Institution's priority.

Mr Ng'andu said that there

was need to promote women's entrepreneurship as a catalyst for advancing women's economic empowerment.

"If we strength women's capabilities and their access to resources, the prospect of leadership roles will be within reach for many more women in the region," he said.

EIZ, he said, was ready to work with women through the ZWES, which was created for women in engineering to realize a collective vision.

And ZWES chairperson Annie Muchelemba said ZWES has so far scored a number of strides since its inception.

Ms Muchelemba said, among the strides was the increase in the number women engineers to the national council from four in 2017 to 21 in 2020.

Ndola’s Chicele traders cry for toilets

TRADERS at Chichele market in Ndola's Mushili Township have complained that over lack of sanitary facilities is compromising the hygiene standards.

Chicele market has been operating without lavatories and no running water from the time it was opened in the 1960s.

Consequently, traders at the market have complained about poor sanitation, which could lead to outbreak of diseases.

Maggie Chileshe, one of the aggrieved traders, said operating from the market had become a challenge as there were no sanitary facilities at trading place.

"Sanitary facilities are very important and here at Chichele market we do not have running water. This is not hygienic as in this time of the corona virus pandemic, the Government should consider looking into our plight as well," she said in an interview.

She added that hygiene should be of high standards in croweded trading locations but that it was difficult for traders to adhere to the Covid19 guidelines without water.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Ndumba, a concerned resident has volunteered to build a toilet at the market and has also promised to sink a borehole.

Mr.Ndumba said it also affects him because he is a member of the community and a trader at the same market.

A 23 years old man who claimed to be passing through hard times after thieves stole from him will spend 12 months in Jail after he took his frustration to also steal from a good-Samaritan who offered to help him.

Lovedale Muchanga who stood charged with Theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia was found guilty following his admission to stealing 1 Bicycle from a good-Samaritan who gave him a k20 for his misfortune.

Particulars of the offence are that Muchanga stole 1 Bicycle valued at K1, 800 the property of James Mulenga.

The theft happened on April 19, 2020 in Choma.

When he appeared for plea before Principal Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo, he admitted the accusations against him and explained that he resorted to stealing the complainant’s Bicycle when he could no longer bear the sufferings he was going through.

According to the Facts laid down by Senior Public Prosecutor Alex Syulikwa, the accused person asked for k20 from the complainant who gave him a k50 but requested that he goes with his Bicycle to look for change and return K30.

But much to the surprise of the complainant, Muchanga went for good and decided to sell the Bicycle in Monze.

“Because of your love for fast money, I will send you to prison for 12 months with hard labour” Magistrate Mupemo pronounced.

The sentence was effective March 15, 2021.

he Kasama High Court has sentenced a 32 -year-old-man to four years imprisonment with hard labour, after he pleaded guilty to killing his friend during a drinking spree.

In this matter Robert Mwaba of Kapanda village in Chief Munkonge’s Chiefdom in Kasama district was initially charged with murder, but the state reduced it

to man-slaughter for having the convict killed Mulenga Kapyelele on 13th April 2020, around 18:00 hours at Kapanda Market.

Facts before the court were that on the material day the deceased Kapyelele, while on a drinking spree accused his friend Mwaba of having robbed him some money, from his pockets as they had sat too close to each other.

The facts further stated that the accusation hangered Mwamba, who later started beating his friend using fists, until he became unconscious and later died.

Mwaba who pleaded for leniency through his lawyer said he was so remorseful that fighting does not pay, was sentenced yesterday by Ndola based High Court Justice Davies Mumba who is sitting as Kasama High Court.

Security guard jailed 36 months for theft MULENGA MUSONDA writes

A 29 years old Security Guard who betrayed his profession by breaking into a Shop and getting away with properties valued at K13, 000 has been convicted by the Choma Magistrates Court.

In this matter Chipo Simwatachela was facing one count of breaking into a Building and Committing a Felony therein contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that, Simwatachela on dates unknown but between

April 7 and 8 in Choma, broke into Martin Muchimba’s shop and stole 10 pieces of Chitenge materials and K12, 000 cash all valued at K13, 000 the property of the named Muchimba.

When he appeared for plea before Resident Magistrate Salie Kanunka, Simwatachela did not dispute anything in this matter but went on to add that he broke into the shop through the roof after scaling the wall.

After the facts were read to him by the state, he admitted that the statement was the correct reflection of what transpired on that particular day.

Despite claiming that, that was his first heist, Magistrate Kanunka observed the fact that he was a first offender who pleaded guilty and such deserved lenience.

She thus sentenced him to 36 months imprisonment with hard labour but expressed shock that Simwatachela was not afraid of breaking his bones when he decided to enter the shop through the roof.

The sentence is effective April 14, 2021 and the convict was informed of his right to appeal to the High Court within 14 days if he is not happy.

Customers will need financial

education so that they are able to use the resources properly and pay back the borrowed funds, says Bank of Zambia (BoZ) Director Non-Bank Financial Institutions Supervision, Freda Tamba.

Ms Tamba the institutions could use the asset as collateral help those who do not have access to credit.

“Financially literate customers will continue coming back for your services in turn contribute to the development of the country’s financial sector,” she said during the launch of the Gulani loans product by Micro Finance Zambia Limited.

THE African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will not replace existing regional trading blocs but instead anchor on their successes to accelerate intra-Africa trade and boost its position on the global market.

This is according to AfCFTA Secretary General, Wamkele Mene, who emphasised that the agreement would ride on the notable successes by reginal economic communities to ensure its effective implementation.

MKUSHI District Commissioner Emmanuel Sinkonde is impressed that Nyimba Investments has started the delivery of inputs early and has implored farmers to make their K 400 contributions.

The early supply and delivery of inputs result into the area recording a bumper harvest and has therefore asked farmers under the Farmer Input Supply Programme to make their deposits.

He said this when he inspect-

ed fertiliser for the 2020/21 farming season at the Nyimba Investment main warehouse.

“I wish to make an appeal to our farmers to start the preparation early. Fertiliser is already in the district and so start the deposits so that you can get the inputs early. Once you get inputs early you can plan in good time,” he said.

He stressed that it was time to focus on delivering a continent that required as many successful regional economic communities as possible.

Mr Mene indicated that: “I do not expect that we are going to, all over a sudden, see the

role of regional economic communities disappear.”

In response, Ms Kapwepwe said COMESA was ready to work with AfCFTA on a number of issues including trade facilitation, payment systems and development of the protocol on women traders under the agreement.

COMESA, she explained, played a big role in the development and negotiations of various instruments for AfCFTA. She said COMESA would continue to do so in the forthcoming phase two and three negotiations, stating that a clear collaborative framework had already been initiated by the experts.

“This has been a very fruitful meeting, we have established the basis of moving forward in how we can interact and unpack what needs to be done.

Having a framework in place is just a starting point, there are so many elements that we have to look at to make this successful,” she said. Ms Kapwepwe said it was important to work together on areas of capacity building and trade policy research as well as undertake joint programmes in promotion of direct foreign investments and private sector development.

Ms Mulowa anticipated that even during the 2020/21 season she would have a better crop yield.

“Nyimba has really helped us and I am sure that even this season I will have a better harvest,” she said.

A TAX on app for iPhone which will allow users make integrated border declarations and payment on a single platform, among others will soon be launched by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

The app to be available on App Store will enable taxpayers search for customs declarations, make integrated border declarations and payment on a single platform, file tax returns and make payments.

This is according to ZRA Corporate Communications Manager, Topsy Sikalinda.

“Apps have become a critical part of our lives in the technology-driven world today. As a customer-centric orientated organisation, the Zambia Revenue Authority through its innovation hub last year launched the Tax on app for android,” Mr Sikalinda said in an interview.

“The team is back with Tax on App for iPhone soon to be available on App Store.

The App dubbed Tax on App has a variety of features that allow taxpayers to register, search for Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN), among others.”

He explained that the app would include information on various Tax Legislations such as the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act, Customs and Excise Act, Income Tax Act, practice notes, annual reports, tariff codes, and latest information about ZRA. Mr Sikalinda said other functionalities that would soon be included in the application was the generation of TPIN certificates, the generation of Tax clearance certificates, and many other documents.

The application, he explained, further allowed taxpayers to find out about tax information such as applicable tax rates, rebates, exemptions, duty-free items among others. He said individuals, entrepreneurs, small business owners, and self-managed income earners, auditors, tax practitioners, and all those without specialised teams working on tax matters could now access relevant tax information in one place using their phones.

“The product takes an agile approach which is not a thing but rather an agile mindset that drives an approach to software development of solutions through a collaborative effort adaptive planning, evolutionary development, early delivery and continual improvement back by the Kaizen concept.

“This encourages flexible responses to change and continues improving the product based on the customer needs who are the taxpayers,” Mr Sikalinda said.

With Zesco United in complete control of the league at this point (Yes it’s far from being over and Zanaco has a huge chance to win it), The Bankers are however just 2 games away from ABSA Cup glory.

On Saturday, they take on Lusaka Dynamos at Arthur Davies Stadium in the first of two semifinals. And if the Bankers have to carry the day, Moses Phiri will have to be at his best.

SOCCER administrator Nelly Miamba has called on Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to also extend it's efforts in looking for sponsorship for the Women National Soccer Team and newly introduced women's league like has been done to the Men. On Monday, FFAZ extended it's partnership with MTN Zambia in which the telecommunication company will sponsor the Senior Men National Team and the Zambian Super League at a total cost of K43 million .

But Miamba, an advocate of women sport, notes that women football women football has for a long time lagged behind in terms of sponsorship and investment into the sport.

She said that there was need for the sport to be given the equal attention that the men were receiving especially that the sport had been reaping results not only in the region but at

Miamba noted that qualification to the Olympics has given Zambia an opportunity to become a super power and hence the need for FAZ to work on making Zambia a continental power house in women football . " We need to take advantage of this period ,. our women team has reached its highest ever peak not only on the continent but globally.

We are the only team that will be representing Africa at the Olympics so it doesn't get any better than this ," Miamba said .

This is the right time that brands should be identifying themselves with the women football. And this is also the right time for FAZ to whoo as much investments as possible just like has been done to the men football.

And Miamba says the Olympics will provide a platform for the Women national team players and the country at large to market itself to the world .

THE Premier Futsal League has announced the postponement of the Wildcat Premier Futsal league following the governments’ directive to avoid mass gatherings after the confirmation of two coronavirus cases in the country.

Wildcat Premier Futsal League chairman, Tarak Mehta said the league has been put on hold because of the current global health crisis.

Mehta said the league will keep its members informed on when it would return to action.

“The Wildcat Premier Futsal League management has decided to put the league on hold indefinitely with immediate effect due the current global health crisis revolving around the coronavirus.
