PNW DISTRICT

Division 11/18C This is our “sister division” Division 11/18C. The lieutenant governor is Shirley Chou who some of you got to meet at the May DCM. Her division covers Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, and Chilliwack. Their divisional mascot is the crab and their divisional colours are red and white to show off their Canadian spirit. Together, Division 13/15/17 and 11/18C are the only Canadian divisions in the Pacific Northwest District! You'll be able to meet 11/18C at Canadian Rally and possibly other future events!

International Trustee Meet our district's International Trustee, Roshni Chandwani! She was elected at the International Convention. As International Trustee, she will be looking after the Pacific Northwest (us), Kentucky Tennessee, and Eastern Canada Districts! Also, big congrats to PNW's Kelsie Hoppes for also winning an International Trustee position!

CLUB REPORTS - August August has been a relatively relaxing month for our key clubbers as they were off enjoying the last of their summers and going on vacations, but Canadian Rally managed to bring many of us together again! We had nine members attend and we all had lots of fun as we met new key clubbers, ate some great pizza, learned lots about our positions and about the Eliminate Project from our lovely Governor Trang, and took a tour around UBC campus. Killarney also managed to win the Spirit Stick, yay! (: Much thanks to Soobeen and Shirley for organizing this! Our fantastic member Chloe Cheung also again volunteered 5 hours of her time this busy August at the Canadian Cancer Society at the Richmond Night Market.

Killarney This month, Britanna Key Club attended in the Canadian Rally, which was a blast! It was great to see so many other Key Club and Kiwanis members. We enjoyed the informative and interactive sessions and the presentation on the Eliminate Project.Getting to seeing the beautiful UBC campus was awesome! We cannot wait for the next Key Club event!

Summer went by too quickly! Execs of Van Tech Key Club were able to whip up some ideas and plans for the upcoming year during August. We also got the opportunity to attend the Canadian Rally and experience a day of hilarious activities. Dressed up in circus outfits, one of our members got to pie fellow Techie Ltg. Soobeen with a plate full of shaving cream! We can't wait for September's festivities!!

VanTech

Pinetree

August flew by insanely fast! Pinetree Secondary Key Club kept cool under the sun with a car wash fundraiser at the Residential Manor of our local hospital, Eagle Ridge. The coordinators gave a huge thank-you for all the volunteers present on that hot August Saturday with a BBQ for all staff and volunteers. Most of our Key Clubbers were on vacation, but we managed to help out at the Summerfest festival in New Port Village, Port Moody. Our executives and volunteers helped out with live entertainment, face painting and the merchants sidewalk sale. Most of the proceeds from the festival activities went to support Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation. To end August with a blast, we joined plenty of Key Clubbers at the super fun Canadian Rally in UBC!

DISTRICT PROJECT 9 160 38 61 1.80

One baby dies every 9 minutes from maternal and neonatal tetanus

160 babies dies each day from maternal and neonatal tetanus

38 countries remain at high risk for maternal and neonatal tetanus

It was announced at Spring Board by Governor Trang Tran that our district project for the term is The Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Project raises money for women in multiple countries that are effected by Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth.

Kiwanis will help protect 61 million mothers and their future babies

The effects are excruciating - newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and have extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival and the baby dies within 7 days of being alive.

It only takes $1.80 to provide 3 tetanus vaccinations to one mother

Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.

With around 12000 Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest, our district goal is to get $2 dollars per member for a total of $24000 by District Convention 2014. I would like to put Vice Presidents within each club in charge of organizing fundraisers for the Eliminate Project. Consider making a Projects or Fundraising Committee with interested club members. My goal for our division is $200 per club by DCON 2014!

Eliminate Educate Educate yourself about MNT, and share what you learn with your club, your community, your family and your school. Advocate Let the world know that the poorest, most vulnerable babies and mothers need our help. Rally others to get involved. Eliminate Over the next five years, the work you do to eliminate MNT will change the world. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF will eliminate MNT and give the poorest families the chance to lead the healthy lives they deserve.

Make sure to be advertising the project and fundraise! If you want some ideas for fundraisers, hold a Miracle Minute at your club meeting! Bake sales at lunch hour are usually very successful too! Get creative with fundraiser ideas. At big school events, have a booth set up for your club and sell goods for The Eliminate Project.

The district board made a PNW Eliminate Project page to show updates on our district's progress. Like and share the page! facebook.com/PnwEliminateProject

Board Of Magical Surprises Introducing the “Board Of Magical Surprises”! This is a point system where clubs will be rewarded for various things. This page will show what points each club got for the previous month and their overall total. At the end of the term, I will be tallying up all marks and the winning CHARTERED and UNCHARTED club will receive a reasonable prize of their choice. This isn't to put clubs on the spot for what they have done or not done. This is just a friendly competition between the 12 clubs in our division! Let's see who wins at the end of the term! :)

CANADIAN RALLY RECAP The Canadian Rally was a great success! Thanks to everyone who came to have a Key Club filled day. The theme was Cirque du Service and we got to see a few who dressed up. The forums were informative for officer training as well as Key Club 101. Lunch was quite long, but it seemed that Key Clubbers were getting to know each other. :) In the afternoon, the most popular forum was “Dating for Dummies” which was led by Division 74 LTG Ben Scranage and District Secretary Hakikat Bains. All attendees got to go on a tour of the University of British Columbia campus by PNW CKI Peacearch LTG Brenda Nguyen. We raised about $70 for the Eliminate Project but with some extra funds, we managed to raise $151.50! At the end of the rally, one Key Clubber from Division 13/15/17 and 11/18C got to pie Shirley and I with a plate filled with shaving cream. All in all, it was a blast planning the event and running around the day-of all stressed, but Shirley and I hope everyone had a great time and don't regret coming. We really couldn't have done it without you guys! L-O-V-E, WE LOVE OUR D-I-Vs! ♥

BACK TO SCHOOL

Dues / First Meeting It's back to school season and you know what that means! It's dues season! Dues in the Pacific Northwest costs $12 per member, returning or old. Early bird is due on November 1st and the deadline for dues is on December 1st. The money should be sent to Key Club International and every member should be registered on the Membership Update Centre which your club Treasurers should know how to do! If it's easier for you, charge $15 and save the $3 for club funds or donate to the Eliminate Project. $6.50 of the $12 goes to Key Club International and $5.50 goes to the Pacific Northwest District. The chart below shows what the money goes towards. For the first club meeting, make sure it's really engaging and exciting! Be creative in how you want your Key Club message to be presented. You can show a slideshow/video, have icebreakers/games, provide snacks, etc. Registration forms can be made but just having basic information like name/grade/e-mail on a piece of paper, just make sure you have all the information you need! Good luck :)
