PNW DISTRICT

Division 11/18C This is our “sister division” Division 11/18C. The lieutenant governor is Shirley Chou who some of you got to meet at the May DCM. Her division covers Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, and Chilliwack. Their divisional mascot is the crab and their divisional colours are red and white to show off their Canadian spirit. Together, Division 13/15/17 and 11/18C are the only Canadian divisions in the Pacific Northwest District! You'll be able to meet 11/18C at Canadian Rally and possibly other future events!

International Trustee Meet our district's International Trustee, Roshni Chandwani! She was elected at the International Convention. As International Trustee, she will be looking after the Pacific Northwest (us), Kentucky Tennessee, and Eastern Canada Districts! Also, big congrats to PNW's Kelsie Hoppes for also winning an International Trustee position!

CLUB REPORTS - JULY

For the month of July, Key Club has been participating in various volunteer events. On Canada Day, Key Club was a part of the Canada Day parade in downtown, showing Key Club spirit as well as helping out the Chinatown Society with handing out free gifts to the crowds. Also, many Key Clubbers are taking their time out this summer to help out at a local daycare, playing with kids ranging from 2-3 years old.

In July, Britannia Key Club members were enjoying the sunshine at the DCM with other Key Clubbers. See you all at the Canadian Rally!

Killarney

The highlight of this past sunny summer month for Killarney Key Club was volunteering at the Kiwanis Tea Party in the North Shore! Five of us volunteered there for 4 hours, decorating and setting tables, serving the Kiwanians food and drinks, and doing lots of clean-up work. Carol and the Kiwanians were extremely nice - they made us feel welcome and socialized with us, provided wonderful jazz music, and even shared their refreshments with us! It was very heartwarming to see the seniors enjoy themselves. Our wonderful member Chloe Cheung also continued her volunteer work at BC Cancer Society at the Richmond Night Market as a Wishing Duck Ambassador, serving 20 hours again this month! We had 6 members/execs attend this month's DCM, and all of us had lots of fun at the beach and at frozen yogurt.

VanTech

In the month of July, Van Tech has been storming up ideas for the upcoming year! We have been searching for new ways to improve and enhance our Key Club to attract more members and make volunteering as exciting as it could possibly be. As well, a big group of enthusiastic members came out at the beginning of the month to help for the fun and exposing Underwear Affair! We were able to put our teamwork and spirit skills to the test at the busy water station.

DISTRICT PROJECT 9 160 38 61 1.80

One baby dies every 9 minutes from maternal and neonatal tetanus

160 babies dies each day from maternal and neonatal tetanus

38 countries remain at high risk for maternal and neonatal tetanus

It was announced at Spring Board by Governor Trang Tran that our district project for the term is The Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Project raises money for women in multiple countries that are effected by Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth.

Kiwanis will help protect 61 million mothers and their future babies

The effects are excruciating - newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and have extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival and the baby dies within 7 days of being alive.

It only takes $1.80 to provide 3 tetanus vaccinations to one mother

Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.

With around 12000 Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest, our district goal is to get $2 dollars per member for a total of $24000 by District Convention 2014. I would like to put Vice Presidents within each club in charge of organizing fundraisers for the Eliminate Project. Consider making a Projects or Fundraising Committee with interested club members. My goal for our division is $200 per club by DCON 2014!

Eliminate Educate Educate yourself about MNT, and share what you learn with your club, your community, your family and your school. Advocate Let the world know that the poorest, most vulnerable babies and mothers need our help. Rally others to get involved. Eliminate Over the next five years, the work you do to eliminate MNT will change the world. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF will eliminate MNT and give the poorest families the chance to lead the healthy lives they deserve.

Make sure to be advertising the project and fundraise! If you want some ideas for fundraisers, hold a Miracle Minute at your club meeting! Bake sales at lunch hour are usually very successful too! Get creative with fundraiser ideas. At big school events, have a booth set up for your club and sell goods for The Eliminate Project.

The district board made a PNW Eliminate Project page to show updates on our district's progress. Like and share the page! facebook.com/PnwEliminateProject

Board Of Magical Surprises Introducing the “Board Of Magical Surprises”! This is a point system where clubs will be rewarded for various things. This page will show what points each club got for the previous month and their overall total. At the end of the term, I will be tallying up all marks and the winning CHARTERED and UNCHARTED club will receive a reasonable prize of their choice. This isn't to put clubs on the spot for what they have done or not done. This is just a friendly competition between the 12 clubs in our division! Let's see who wins at the end of the term! :)
