PNW DISTRICT

Division 11/18C This is our “sister division” Division 11/18C. The lieutenant governor is Shirley Chou who some of you got to meet at the May DCM. Her division covers Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, and Chilliwack. Their divisional mascot is the salmon and their divisional colours are red and white to show off their Canadian spirit. Together, Division 13/15/17 and 11/18C are the only Canadian divisions in the Pacific Northwest District!

International Trustee This is our district's International Trustee, Roshni Chandwani! She was elected at the International Convention. As International Trustee, she will be looking after the Pacific Northwest (us), Kentucky Tennessee, and Eastern Canada Districts! Also, big congrats to PNW's Kelsie Hoppes for also winning an International Trustee position!

CLUB REPORTS - JANUARY Britannia

January has been an exciting month for Britannia Key Club. On January 4th, we finally got to volunteer at Quest Food Exchange, a not-for-profit grocery store, as repackers. We felt very welcomed at Quest Food Exchange, and look forward to going back in April. After that, we kicked off the first few meetings of 2014 by talking about some very exciting things; such as creating exclusive Britannia Key Club gear and planning the Valentine's Day Singing-Grams! We are proud to say that we designed our club t-shirt as a group and are very happy with the logo and colors chosen. We cannot wait to rock them at the upcoming Indoor Track Meet! As for the Singing-Grams, it was a lot of fun to discuss song ideas. Member suggestions include 'Never Gonna Give You Up' and 'My Heart Will Go On'. Based on those suggestions, you can already tell how much there is to look forward to this Valentine's Day. In addition to discussing internal projects, our volunteer committee members also provided members with opportunities to volunteer for the Children's Festival, coming up this May. We also attended the January DCM, where we participated in the LTG elections. Congratulations to Patricia Xie from Killarney! We had a great time and really enjoyed playing 'Do You Love Your Neighbor'. January was great, but we are really looking forward to carrying out the activities we talked about next month!

Killarney This past month has been a busy one for Killarney Key Club! We had 19 members who earned a combined 109 hours at the International Relations Student Gala. We helped wait on tables, complete registration, organize the silent auction, wash dishes, and aid set-up and clean-up. Great job key clubbers! Special thanks to those who stayed extra late to help out. A week later, we had our long awaited Cutting Edge. Organized by Chloe Cheung, Patricia Xie, and myself, this event (which has been running for 4 years now) had 92 people either cut their hair to donate to make wigs for cancer patients, or shave their heads bald for awareness! We collected a bit under 50 ponytails, and over $400 for the Kiwanis Children's Cancer Program. We had 27 members help out and they earned in total, 78 service hours. Special thanks to Denzil Wood for shaving heads (: As the execs prepare to wrap up the term, we have begun donating money, and so, we were able to donate $1000 CAD to the Eliminate Project! WOO GOOD JOB KEY CLUBBERS. And finally, we had our incoming executive elections this month. Thank you to everyone who ran, and congratulations to Matt Law, Jessica Siu, Kyle Tsia, Julia Zhou, and Jordan Zhao. YAY FOR INNIES!

DISTRICT PROJECT 9 160 38 61 1.80

One baby dies every 9 minutes from maternal and neonatal tetanus

160 babies dies each day from maternal and neonatal tetanus

38 countries remain at high risk for maternal and neonatal tetanus

It was announced at Spring Board by Governor Trang Tran that our district project for the term is The Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Project raises money for women in multiple countries that are effected by Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth.

Kiwanis will help protect 61 million mothers and their future babies

The effects are excruciating - newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and have extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival and the baby dies within 7 days of being alive.

It only takes $1.80 to provide 3 tetanus vaccinations to one mother

Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.

With around 12000 Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest, our district goal is to get $2 dollars per member for a total of $24000 by District Convention 2014. I would like to put Vice Presidents within each club in charge of organizing fundraisers for the Eliminate Project. Consider making a Projects or Fundraising Committee with interested club members. My goal for our division is $200 per club by DCON 2014!

Eliminate Educate Educate yourself about MNT, and share what you learn with your club, your community, your family and your school. Advocate Let the world know that the poorest, most vulnerable babies and mothers need our help. Rally others to get involved. Eliminate Over the next five years, the work you do to eliminate MNT will change the world. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF will eliminate MNT and give the poorest families the chance to lead the healthy lives they deserve.

Make sure to be advertising the project and fundraise! If you want some ideas for fundraisers, hold a Miracle Minute at your club meeting! Bake sales at lunch hour are usually very successful too! Get creative with fundraiser ideas. At big school events, have a booth set up for your club and sell goods for The Eliminate Project.

The district board made a PNW Eliminate Project page to show updates on our district's progress. Like and share the page! facebook.com/PnwEliminateProject

Board Of Magical Surprises This is the Board Of Magical Surprises, a point system where clubs will be rewarded for various things. This page will show what points each club got for the previous month and their overall total. At the end of the term, I will be tallying up all marks and the winning CHARTERED and UNCHARTED club will receive a reasonable prize of their choice. Let's see who wins at the end of the term! :)
