PNW DISTRICT

Division 11/18C This is our “sister division” Division 11/18C. The lieutenant governor is Shirley Chou who some of you got to meet at the May DCM. Her division covers Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, and Chilliwack. Their divisional mascot is the salmon and their divisional colours are red and white to show off their Canadian spirit. Together, Division 13/15/17 and 11/18C are the only Canadian divisions in the Pacific Northwest District!

International Trustee This is our district's International Trustee, Roshni Chandwani! She was elected at the International Convention. As International Trustee, she will be looking after the Pacific Northwest (us), Kentucky Tennessee, and Eastern Canada Districts! Also, big congrats to PNW's Kelsie Hoppes for also winning an International Trustee position!

CLUB REPORTS - DECEMBER Britannia

During the hectic month of December, Key Clubbers participated in a very successful fundraising campaign named "Deck the Halls". For a donation, members wrapped students' lockers and some teachers' doors with gift wrap for the holidays. This fundraising campaign was very successful, as we were able to raise funds for the Eliminate Project. Most importantly, we were able to educate the school on what maternal and neonatal tetanus can do through PA announcements. We are very pleased with the amount of support from the staff and students of Britannia. Thank you to the dedicated members who stayed after school, used creativity, and wrapped the lockers! They are so beautiful. In addition to the locker wrapping, members also continued to volunteer at the MS Society gift wrapping booth at Metrotown. It was a great way to reach out to people who wanted to contribute to the MS Society. At the last meeting before winter break, members ate holiday themed goodies and discussed volunteer opportunities in January, including the IRSA Winter Benefit Gala. We are looking forward to a very busy and productive 2014 as Key Clubbers! Congratulations to all Britannia Key Club members for their active participation during the busy month of December!

VanTech December really was the month of giving for Van Tech! We held our first ever sock drive that resulted in more than 240 pairs of socks (don't worry, we're pretty sure they were all clean!). We are happy to make this donation to two homeless shelters in Vancouver. Big congrats to our Projects Committee for doing a fantastic job in such a short period of time. Starting off the month was the much anticipated Rogers Santa Parade that we were able to help out at once again! We were also privileged to volunteer with Kiwanians for the second time at the Special Children's Christmas party. A large number of our members got to have fun on the bouncy castles early in the morning and then head off to work in the amazing toy cave. Seeing the members interact with all of the children and their family was truly a precious moment! We had a blast giving out toys and were inspired hearing all the stories shared on this special day. Finally, a great big thank you to Soobeen for her tremendous effort for this month's DCM. L-O-V-E we love our LTG!

Killarney

We started off the month with volunteering at the Rogers Santa Claus Day Parade! Fifteen key clubbers worked as route marshals, kindly keeping crowds away from the road while enjoying the Christmas spirit that morning Downtown. The following week, we had twelve key clubbers travel to North Vancouver to volunteer at the Kiwanis Christmas Seniors' Tea. We had lots of fun serving the seniors coffee, tea, and sandwiches, and they were all very friendly and welcoming. Our Deck the Halls fundraiser was this month, as many many key clubbers worked hard and even late into the night as Santa's elves, decorating student lockers and teachers doors with cute wrapping paper. We raised $200 for our Build-A-School fund to build a school in Sierra Leone. Good job key clubbers! To celebrate the end of a successful 2013, key clubbers were treated to a well-deserved pizza party at the final meeting of the year. And finally, to end off the year, we had 24 key clubbers come out to Soobeen's DCM where everyone enjoyed eating at Old Spaghetti Factory, skating at Robson Square, and exploring Downtown.

Pinetree

Pinetree Key Club enjoyed the frivoulous feels of the holidays as we relaxed after a long and hardworking streak of preparations for "The 2013 Hunger Games" which happened in November. It was a HUGE success. President Laura Valerio has thanked all the support and effort coming from PT's key clubbers, their Kiwanis advisors, Ninja Bubble Tea, community centre administrators, Pinetree administrators, and amazing teacher supervisors. We celebrated for reaching a grand total of $1530 towards Project Eliminate. It was a worthwhile success. A total of 13 Pinetree Key Clubbers and 5 executives attended the whimsical December DCM at the Old Spaghetti Factory and skated at Robson Square later in the evening. Thanks to Ltg. Soobeen Park for the planning this dinner, and for her lovely christmas cards. It was a lot of fun. Pinetree Key Club will once again become busy with new project ideas and club events in the upcoming months, and would like to wish everyone in DIV 13/15/17 a Happy New Year!

DISTRICT PROJECT 9 160 38 61 1.80

One baby dies every 9 minutes from maternal and neonatal tetanus

160 babies dies each day from maternal and neonatal tetanus

38 countries remain at high risk for maternal and neonatal tetanus

It was announced at Spring Board by Governor Trang Tran that our district project for the term is The Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Project raises money for women in multiple countries that are effected by Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth.

Kiwanis will help protect 61 million mothers and their future babies

The effects are excruciating - newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and have extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival and the baby dies within 7 days of being alive.

It only takes $1.80 to provide 3 tetanus vaccinations to one mother

Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.

With around 12000 Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest, our district goal is to get $2 dollars per member for a total of $24000 by District Convention 2014. I would like to put Vice Presidents within each club in charge of organizing fundraisers for the Eliminate Project. Consider making a Projects or Fundraising Committee with interested club members. My goal for our division is $200 per club by DCON 2014!

Eliminate Educate Educate yourself about MNT, and share what you learn with your club, your community, your family and your school. Advocate Let the world know that the poorest, most vulnerable babies and mothers need our help. Rally others to get involved. Eliminate Over the next five years, the work you do to eliminate MNT will change the world. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF will eliminate MNT and give the poorest families the chance to lead the healthy lives they deserve.

Make sure to be advertising the project and fundraise! If you want some ideas for fundraisers, hold a Miracle Minute at your club meeting! Bake sales at lunch hour are usually very successful too! Get creative with fundraiser ideas. At big school events, have a booth set up for your club and sell goods for The Eliminate Project.

The district board made a PNW Eliminate Project page to show updates on our district's progress. Like and share the page! facebook.com/PnwEliminateProject

Board Of Magical Surprises This is the Board Of Magical Surprises, a point system where clubs will be rewarded for various things. This page will show what points each club got for the previous month and their overall total. At the end of the term, I will be tallying up all marks and the winning CHARTERED and UNCHARTED club will receive a reasonable prize of their choice. Let's see who wins at the end of the term! :)
