Thank you for a great start to the 2021-22 school year. As a district, we appreciate your patience as we work to support our students, staff and families through the transition back to full in-person learning.

Over the summer, we moved staff, programs and even entire buildings to new locations.

We implemented a new two-way communication tool (ParentSquare) and continued our transition to Final Forms as a tool for parents to register their students as well as complete all those back-to-school forms that used to come home on paper. We hope these changes impact everyone in a positive way. None of these things would have been possible without the hard work of all our dedicated staff members.

In this quarterly newspaper, you will see many first-day-of-school pictures of kids who are so happy to be back to in-person learning with their teachers and classmates. Thank you to everyone who sent in a photo.

Unfortunately, we are once again challenged with educating students and operating at full capacity during a global pandemic. To navigate these unprecedented times, we must always keep the safety and health of our students and staff at the forefront of everything that we do. I appreciate the support shown to us in our decision to begin the school year with face coverings and social distancing.

Please know that we are closely monitoring the spread of COVID-19 in our buildings and will continue to communicate to students, staff and families who are identified as close contacts to anyone who tests positive. Our number one goal is to maintain our ability to provide in-person learning safely throughout the entire school year.

To make this happen, we need your continued support. Please follow safety protocols to keep everyone safe. Do a health check every morning, wash your hands often, wear a mask when indoors at our buildings or on the bus and get vaccinated if possible.

Together, we can have a safe and successful year.

Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health (C&A)

Keeping tabs on your child’s mental health

School-based Services at Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health (C&A) has been in existence for more than 20 years. In collaboration with Stark County Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Board (StarkMHAR), C&A provides mental health services to eight school districts within the county. Our School-Based therapists are on-site at the school and readily available to assist students in need.

School-Based therapists provide services to both open clients as well as consultation clients. Students can be impacted both academically and socially when they are struggling with emotional or behavioral concerns.

Teachers and staff may identify those students and refer them to C&A services. Having a therapist on-site to address these concerns, in the moment, has shown to be effective and beneficial to increasing children’s success at school.

This school year may look more normal than last year, but there could be some anxiety and stress with being in the school building. Canton City

Education Services

Instructional Coaches and Technology Resource Teachers Provide Support

in training before the school year began to help support teachers and staff within each school building.

So far this school year, TRTs have supported teachers and students in accessing iPads, setting up equipment and accessing new programs.

The 2021-2022 Design for Excellence district plan provided much-needed additional support to buildings Gary Kandel throughout the Canton City School District by way of Instructional Coaches and Technology Resource Teachers.

The district ICs have been busy assisting with curriculum distribution and access. Grade K-6 Instructional Coaches have been instrumental in benchmarking our students using our Acadience Learning Online (ALO) program which will be instrumental in providing students with necessary reading supports and instruction.

Both positions provide support to teachers, students and other building personnel through training, teaching, data and daily support of new initiatives. Both the Technology Resource Teachers “TRTs” and Instructional Coaches “ICs” participated

McKinley

By Jonas Wertin - Principal, McKinley High School Last year the staff of McKinley High School spent a lot of time preparing for this year.

We anticipated that it would be a difficult year as the needs of our students grew over the pandemic. As this year begins, we are confident that some of this planning has allowed us to create programs that intentionally help our students in three key areas: academics, engagement and community.

Over the last 18 months, we at McKinley have faced unprecedented challenges that have required us to think about our practices in innovative ways to meet the needs of our students. And while we anticipate the effects of the pandemic will continue to impact our students, we will continue to respond to those needs with creativity and intentional planning. We are confident the programs and opportunities we’ve designed for the 2021-2022 school year will support our students academically, increase their engagement in many of our extracurricular opportunities and ensure we all stay connected as a community.

As a school, we always start with academics. McKinley now boasts dedicated time to allow students to be tutored at any time of day in both math and English by content specialists. Along with our writing and math labs, we have equipped every student with a support period we call Academic Assist.

In Academic Assist, teachers will support students both academically and check in on them for their attendance and credit needs.

On top of this, we have also assigned teachers to small groups of students, asking them to check in with those students’ parents about what academic and social/emotional

needs their students may have. As we move forward, we will also be offering a variety of after-school programming including tutoring, credit recovery and athletic study tables.

Academics is not our only focus. We also want to engage our students in all things McKinley. Outside of all the athletic programs we proudly support, McKinley High School boasts some of the best programs available in Stark County, such as our nationally recognized speech and debate team.

Students can also participate in our Pep Club, National Honors Society, SAFE Zone, Chess Club, International Club, Band, Choir, and our brand new Interact Club, just to name a few. We have purposely developed a host of engagement activities to reconnect our students to our proud history.

Speaking of reconnecting, on 13 Wednesdays throughout the year, we have organized a special day when students can connect with their school and teachers in a different way by signing up for an array of opportunities throughout the day.

Students who would like to participate in our clubs during the traditional school day, or may be interested in pursuing a personal passion, will certainly welcome Reconnect Wednesdays! Over the course of 13 Reconnect Wednesdays, McKinley students will have an opportunity to take a deeper dive into their personal interests and connect with their teachers in a unique way. Every quarter, students will be encouraged to register for two personal interest courses (or clubs) taught by none other than our CCS teachers during Reconnect Wednesdays.

Finally, and at the heart of everything we do, we want to connect with our community. As stated above, we are planning to be purposeful about connecting with our families with our mentorship program, connecting with the community through our Reconnect days, and connect with our community through our Family and Support specialist. We have already raised money and school supplies with our Stuff the Bus program and we intend to do much more. Our goal... be an answer in a very difficult time.

In addition, we are excited to welcome many guest speakers like Rodney Dennis, a local barber and Barber College Owner, who will be visiting us for a program called Cuts and Conversation. Our guest teacher, Andrea McCormick of Cleveland, is a professional artist-in-residency that will be joining us two days per week throughout the year, an opportunity provided through the Teach Arts Ohio Grant - A Year in the Life - Musical Theatre!

In a few short weeks, our CTE students will be resuming their on-site work experiences and we can’t wait to welcome our community guests back to the All-City Grille in November when we open. We don’t mind saying it’s still the best smokehouse burger in town!

At McKinley, we are ready to help our students not only get back to some sense of normalcy, but more importantly, to rise above the challenges we’ve faced over the last year and a half. We are the McKinley Bulldogs!

Early College High School

ECHS Students visit College Campuses This will be the fifth year of our college visits for Early College students. The colleges we visit are known as the Big 8. Last year our college visits were virtual. The students checked in and were given a virtual tour of the campus. During this time, we discovered this does not work for our students. This year, the colleges are able to host all our seniors.

Thanks to the generous donations of the CAST and CAMP OpCom team. These organizations are our community support team. They provided the Chaperones who also advised the students on college readiness during the tours. The CAST organization from Glenmoor provided the funding for these college visits. They helped to fund the bus and lunch. We have 78 seniors in Early College who benefit from walking on college campuses and getting these personal tours.

The ART of Teaching Students who are Deaf & Hearing Impaired

The Canton City School District is fortunate to have our very own Deaf & Hearing Impaired program to serve our students! We have two certified teachers, Gwen Yohe and Chelsie Tenney, who work with our deaf and hearingimpaired students across the district. Currently, Gwen teaches the specialized classroom at The Arts Academy that serves elementary students with significant or complete hearing loss, and Chelsie

provides specialized services to our students at McKinley High School.

high school youth who can benefit from extra encouragement and assistance through a variety of learning and experiential opportunities. It helps students clarify life goals, leading to graduation and fulfilling post-high school desires.

We are grateful that parents and guardians see the value of Simply Youth and encourage youth participation from elementary through high school graduation. Programming is funded by the City of Canton Community Development Department.

It takes a team to provide the detailed and intricate services these students need.

Bulldog Pride Citywide!

Local Youth Development program helps CCS students succeed Simply Youth invests in each child, adolescent and high school youth by creating conditions for them to take advantage of a hand-up!

Instead of the hand-out approach many youth development programs and agencies provide, Simply Youth’s development philosophy is to make learning supports and tools available to select students. These tools are designed to meet the individual aspirations of each participant while preparing them to advance into post-graduate self-sufficiency.

For the past 8 years, Simply Youth has provided an array of services and supports for elementary, middle school and high school youth that correspond to the developmental and life skills suit-

able for each youth’s academic, social and personal progress and ambitions. Simply Youth organizes programs that assist the unique needs of each student’s age and stage of schooling through assessing their learning and motivation.

Simply Youth is pleased to provide direct support to Canton City Schools District as a partner in accomplishing its Workforce Development goals and objectives through complementary programs and initiatives.

A goal we share with CCSD is that high school students graduate within the traditional four-year expectation. We believe in being ambitious and managing programs that excite and support youth on their graduation tracks and assists them in preparing for their post-graduate goals.

Of particular interest is our PEEProject. The PEEProject identifies

Certainly, Simply Youth’s aims are not entirely unique, however, our approach is singular in Stark County. We view each high school student as a potential resource to the county.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has taught us to pay particular attention to our children and youth and their progress. The pandemic has forever changed how work expectations are accomplished. As much as adults feel the changes brought on by new work/life structure requirements, our youth need to be prepared for flexibility and

change. Their academic and work experiences set the foundation from which their futures will be realized.

As an integral youth development partner, we assist youth to achieve balance between competing learning, work and lifestyle priorities. These challenges pose difficult decisions for many experienced adults, and our youth must respond to global changes with competence, agility and confidence. With knowledge and experience, Simply Youth imparts participating high school youth with the hands-up tools needed to successfully provide for themselves and their families.

AIM Academy AIM Academy is thrilled to have the opportunity to cheer on and develop children who will not only impact the future of our community’s workforce but also impact the social fabric of the Canton Community.

Each quarter, our 6th grade students will lead the school in an outreach mission designed to make Canton a kinder, gentler place to live.

drive began with a Friday Morning Meeting kick-off and we immediately hit our goal of 500 pairs of new socks. The 6th graders changed the goal to collecting 800 pairs of socks and we are now less than 100 pairs from our schoolwide goal. When we

reach our goal, we will have a Crazy Sock Day and Sock Hop. Congratulations to our entire 6th grade team as they build up our school to become Community Champions. We are so proud of everyone!

This quarter, our 6th graders worked with the Refuge of Hope and discovered that an unnoticed need of the homeless is socks, and new socks are rarely donated to the shelter. Socks are a common comfort that many of us take for granted but we learned the homeless don’t have the joy of socks very often. Lack of socks can lead to frostbite in the cold months, infections, athlete’s foot and a host of other foot care issues.

Our 6th graders pulled the entire AIM Building together to gather socks for the Canton Homeless Community. The sock

Arts Academy@Summit Opens a Food Pantry Caring Hearts Outreach, Inc. a non-profit organization has partnered with Akron/Canton Regional Food Bank and the Arts Academy@Summit school to open a local food pantry. The Arts Academy@Summit food pantry will supply food to families of the Canton City School District and communities. Representatives from the food bank say the need for food is growing at an extremely fast rate during the pandemic.

Opening a local food pantry will allow us to better meet the needs of our surrounding communities. We celebrated the official grand opening of our new Food Pantry at the Arts Academy@ Summit, 1100 10th St NW, on Sept. 15.

STEAMM

There’s lots of excitement this year at the STEAMM Academy at Hartford. Just look at the line for Open House — it literally wrapped around the building as we welcomed 4th and 5th graders to join our 6-8 graders. STEAMM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Agriculture, Math & Medicine, and the staff is so excited to welcome these young learners.

Our building offers learning opportunities to students who are in Grades 4-8 who have an interest in science, technology, engineering, art, math, and medicine concepts and want to receive explicit and rigorous instruction. Career pathways include agriculture, computer

coding, culinary arts, engineering, medicine, performing and visual arts. STEAMM Academy has been designated a STEAM school by the State of Ohio.

September highlights include a visit by some local Deltas who came to read and dance with 4th graders. Dr. Brenda Stevens and Latrice Snodgrass came to share their experiences with the students and were talked into dancing by the students.

We were also excited to welcome the Stark Fresh Mobile Market which made a stop at the STEAMM Academy @ Hartford every Tuesday in September.

There’s a lot of excitement at Crenshaw Middle School with an innovative new structure. As home of the 7-8 Arts Academy, we have created different learning opportunities for all students which tap into their interests and talents as they explore a variety of class offerings. Students were surveyed to identify preferences and placed in one of three “companies”. Students with an interest in the arts take classes in Studio Company where various artistic themes are presented throughout the curriculum. Performances and exhibits are scheduled throughout the year to showcase all of the wonderful things our students will be creating.

Classes such as band, choir, dance, digital music and arts and communication offer students a range of choices as they explore all that the arts have to offer. Our second grouping is Design Company which focuses on students with interests in technology and trades. Career-based themes are presented throughout the curriculum so that students can continue to build interest and skills in these areas. Classes such as Informational Technology, Business Foundations, Broadcast Media, Health Sciences and many more, offer students an introduction into these fields.

For students who are still exploring a range of interests and talents, we have Imagine Company.

Students can discover all the different possibilities throughout any of the companies to help garner interest and begin thinking about future opportunities and classes that they may want to take the following year or at the High School level. General studies are available, as well as multiple high school credit courses. It’s going to be an exciting year @TheShaw!

Fairmount Learning Center

Fairmount Learning Center started the year with a ton of fun, engaging and hands-on STEM activities. This gave students time to get to know each other and begin learning to work together. We are excited to see our blended family learn and grow in many ways this school year.

Great Beginning at ECMS

We are off to a great start at ECMS at Lehman. The next question you may be asking yourself is what is ECMS. ECMS stands for Early College Middle School

at Lehman. Early College Academy as we were known a few years ago is a 7th and 8th grade middle school that is designed to help prepare students

for Early College High School. We are housed at Lehman with Early College High School, and this allows us to plan and create programs that better prepare students for Early College High School.

It has been great to see the ECMS and ECHS staff working extremely hard to prepare their new space at Lehman for students. All of their hard work was on display during our open house. It was great to see so many families and students in the building and excited to begin school. Now that school has officially begun ECMS students have been working hard learning what it means to be an ECMS student. Our English department has been working on writing prompts designed around the R-Factor. They have been focusing on being able to Press Pause and Getting Their Minds Right so they can focus on the task at hand. We look forward to seeing even more from our students!

Cedar

Cedar has been very busy this past month. At the beginning of August, the school gym was full of boxes and furniture. The staff has worked incredibly hard to create the beautiful bustling school it is today welcoming over 400 new students!

Clarendon Intermediate School welcomed 307 guests at our Fall Open House. In addition to meeting staff members, families had an opportunity to learn about various community services available to us. Arlington Church of God, a long-time community partner, joined in the fun by providing students with a brand-new backpack full of school supplies to start the year off successfully. They treated teachers with extra supplies for the classrooms. Students were invited to tour the school and meet the staff using an interactive scavenger hunt. Students visited "hot spots" around the school to become familiar with their new home. As students made their way around the building, they completed engaging tasks to rally some BULLDOG spirit. Gibbs Elementary School New Look, Same Community Gibbs Elementary School has a new look for the 20212022 school year, but has the same community and togetherness that has always made Gibbs great. Last year Gibbs was a Leadership School that housed Grades 3, 4 and 5. This year, Gibbs will welcome kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade.

We started the year off great with our Open House on August 17. During

Along with the new grades, Gibbs has some new staff positions that will help students achieve their goals and become successful life-long learners.

There are new principals at Gibbs this year, but they are familiar faces in the Canton City School District. Mrs. Irwin is the principal and is in her 7th year of administration. She was most recently the head principal at Schreiber Ele-

mentary. Mrs. Piccari is the assistant principal and has previously taught kindergarten and first grade in the Canton City School District. Our principal team is excited to partner with our families and community as they lead Gibbs Elementary this year.

First grade, second grade and third grades will have Literacy and Numeracy Teachers that will be working in smaller groups to provide students with specific lessons based on a student’s area of need. Mrs. Lindberg, Mrs. Lambert and Mrs. Pleger will be filling

these new roles at Gibbs Elementary.

Our building will have Mr.Markino as the Technology Resource Teacher and Ms. Wilgus as the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) teacher.

These teachers will visit classrooms to provide students with lessons that will help them with technology, critical thinking, and creativity.

Finally, we have added Instructional Coach Ms. Kuhn to our Gibbs staff.

Ms. Kuhn will be assisting teachers in creating effective lessons that will target each student’s

specific needs. She will also be coming into classrooms to work with students in small groups.

Although some things are changing at Gibbs Elementary School, we look forward to working with all the students, families, community members and partners like we have in the past. Gibbs is committed to bringing the best opportunities to our students, and the best way to do that is to utilize all of our resources.

We are excited to have a great school year and LET’S GO PUPS!

CCS CareerTech partners with Harter Elementary for Early Literacy BULLDOGS HELPING BULLDOGS! Harter Elementary School is working every day to grow our Bulldogs’ early reading skills.

Blending boards are a classroom literacy tool that can help make that happen. At the end

of last year, Mr. Stone and Mr. Conrad reached out to Mr. Nunez and his high school students in the Career Tech Department for help in getting blending boards for our teachers to use in their classrooms.

Rosendo Maldonado, Nicholas Hixson, Edy Moran Cal, Iris Perez Us and Charles Phillips, helped build the blending boards that will be used to grow our early reading skills. They made 25 blending boards, one for every teacher at Harter.

Nate Chester and his barbers from Chester Mop Shop. While his group is not part of the Love the Children’s Ministries, he is an alumnus of Youtz. Nate and his men provided free haircuts to any student who wanted one. He also plans on starting a “Books with the Barber” Club with us at Youtz.

We can’t say thank you enough to our alumni. They impress us every day. It just shows that Bulldog Pride is Citywide!

Director of Canton City Schools and the rest of the Federal League are selling all game tickets online through Home Town Ticketing. There are no cash sales at the gate for any of our home events or Federal League away events. Ticket prices are $8 for reserved seats, $7 for high school general admission and $5 for middle school and freshman general admission.

Ticket prices are listed online as $1 less to account for the convenience fee. Fans will only pay the extra credit card fee as they would on any purchase.

We have created several ways to help our fans purchase tickets: 1. Online at www.mckinleyathletics. org. Choose 'McKinley Box Office' under the 'MORE' menu.

2. Download and use the new Hometown Fan App. It will allow fans to find and purchase tickets to all Federal League events and stores their tickets for easy retrieval for scanning at the gate. This is the easiest way to get tickets to away games in the Federal League.

Transportation Did you Know?

The Canton City Schools Transportation Department is made up of 130 employees who provide service to 34 buildings. We drive over 2,800 miles and transport over 7,800 students per day.

Our office is open from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and during the Afterschool Program, we stay out even later until 8:00 p.m!

Did you know that a bus driver must perform a 100-point inspection of their school bus every morning before they can leave the parking lot to pick up students? Bus Drivers are required to check all eight mirrors before pulling away from every bus stop and one single bus driver will transport over 300 students in a day!

Transporting children is a very serious and important job. We love our job and our students!

Now that school is open, please watch for stopped school buses. Several vehicles pass through our stop signs daily. Our drivers are extra careful about where, when and how we pick up and drop off our precious cargo.

Please make sure you slow down and stop for buses when you see the lights flashing, and never ever go around a stopped school bus with its stop sign out.

School Bus Safety Week October 18th - 22nd 2021 Canton City Schools will join other schools and communities to recognize National School Bus Safety Week. The national theme this year is 1 BUS + 1 Driver = a BIG Impact on Education.

The big yellow school bus has become the epitome of education in our country.

Often, we take for granted the benefit of this service, even while school and transportation staff continue to focus on maximizing safety and efficiency. Without this service for children and families to access safe transportation education equality would be difficult to achieve.

More than 800,000 Ohio students ride on school buses each day, and nearly 15,000 bus drivers, mechanics, secretaries and supervisors statewide are dedicated to providing safe transportation for Ohio children. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tells us that the students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a school bus instead of traveling by car.

This year’s national campaign is focused on how critical school buses are to children, parents and communities for providing equal learning opportunities.

School bus safety for our children is our top priority.

“Ensuring the safety of our students is crucial,” is the message from the Canton City Schools Transportation Department.

“We train our bus drivers to be cautious, but we need help from parents to make sure our students remain alert and mindful of good safety practices when walking to their bus stop or to school.”

The Canton City Schools Transportation Department offers the following tips to remind your child while getting on and off the school bus: Get to the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.

Wait at your designated place of safety.

Take 10 giant steps away from the bus while it is unloading.

Always follow the Bus Driver’s instructions on how to cross the street.

Be alert to traffic and always look both ways.

If you must cross the street, always cross in FRONT of the school bus.

They learned about Historically Black Colleges and Universities, as well as other local colleges and job opportunities. McKinley vs. Massillon Week October 18-23 It’s more than football!

It's the oldest high school rivalry in the area! McKinley vs Massillon! But this time, there's food involved.

Since 2012, WH BC's Food Fight has pitted the two schools against each other in an effort to raise donations for the Stark County Hunger Task Force. Thousands of Stark County residents go hungry every day, not knowing where their next meal will come from.

Food Fight takes the school rivalry to the next level, and makes it a fight against hunger!

After collecting donations for a number of weeks, Stark County Hunger Task Force then tally's the amount of pounds of food collected by each school. The winner is announced at the McKinley vs Massillon high school football game. The winner gets a traveling trophy and bragging rights for a year.
