MEMBERSHIP MATTERS From the General Manager

Dear Members and Friends: The leaves are falling, football has started, and it’s beginning to get chilly. Halloween is just a memory, and the Holiday Season is almost upon us. We will have all our favorite traditional Club functions plus a couple of new fun events. So read the newsletter and look out for the weekly updates so that you do not miss any of the action.

We ended the 2023 fiscal year on a high note, with a strong showing for the last month of the year. With great appreciation to George Henry for the awesome Banquet and Special Events that really boosted the revenues. All the racquets sports were also strong at the finish line.

We will have the traditional Thanksgiving Grand Buffet, Gingerbread House Decorating, Santa’s Family Brunch, and the New Year’s Early Gala. We are also adding a Friday Night Lights, after the Champagne Tasting, and possibly an “Ugly Sweater Contest.” We will also have a Game Watch Night coming up for the UK/UofL annual football game.

Never forget that Members are the lifeblood of this, and any other, Club. Please help grow that Membership by referring your friends, family, and business associates.

It is your right and responsibility to help grow the Membership Roster. As an incentive, you, the sponsoring Member will receive a $500 Food credit. In the last two months, we have been fortunate to add 6 new Members to the roster and we have two applications for November.

At the recent Board Meeting, a decision was made to reinstate the Premium Clubhouse Membership, effective November 1. This Membership will include all the privileges of Clubhouse Membership plus Pickleball.

Remember, we welcome your constructive comments, since through these we are able to upgrade your Member experience.

As always, the Management Team, the Staff and I are here to take care of you, your families, and your friends to give them the best experience possible.

Dear Members, By the time you read this, looks like we will finally have some Fall Weather. While always sad to see the pool close for the Summer, Fall and Winter always bring some great opportunities for solo and family activities at the Club. The Louisville Boat Club is truly a unique Club in its menu of year-round activities: indoor tennis, squash, pickleball, platform tennis, bocce, and an exercise room with an assortment of fitness classes.

During the Fall/Winter, the Crow’s Nest will see more regular activity with more featured items and televised sports. The informal dining room with its lounge area is great for families to wine, dine, and relax. Two racquet sports, an exercise class, and a yoga class with a visit to the Bar is a solid week at the LBC for any member!

The Board recently invited the Club Counseling firm, McMahon Group, for a return visit to the LBC. It has been 10 years since their last advisory role at the Club and we heard a very informative review of national and regional trends in the Country Club arena. Their initial recommendations of projects and improvements were in line with our own Member Survey and Board initiatives, but their method of preparing a prioritized and efficient plan was enlightening and exciting to see for the Board. Once we receive their proposals for going forward, we will send them out to the Membership in the next few months and outline the procedures available to us as a Club.

Two important committees have been working hard recently at the LBC. As election day for our Board of Directors approaches in early December, the Nominating Committee has been working to fill their slate for the few people that roll off the Board this year.

Also, the GM search committee has met with several qualified potential candidates to replace the illustrious, soon-to-retire Mr Drury. I am confident we will have a new GM in place before the end of the year.

RACQUET REPORT New Director Happy November to all you racketeers and paddlers!

We had a great October here in the Tennis, Pickleball, and Paddle department. The weather cooperated enough in October to allow everyone to continue to play outside on the clay courts as well as our outdoor pickleball courts. October brought us the very successful 1st Annual Oktoberfest Member/Member Pickleball Tournament that was run by our very own pickleball head pro, Kelly-Marie Bohnert. On the women’s side, congratulations to Wendy Menzel and Jill Ragan for capturing the women’s doubles championship. On the men’s side, congratulations to Blake Blythe and David Schmelzer on their championship run in the men’s doubles. Congratulations and thank you to all our participants for supporting a great pickleball event.

Fast forwarding to November, sadly we will see the closing of the clay courts. We will be systematically reducing the number of clay courts as the weather gets colder and the days get shorter. I would like to thank everyone for a wonderful clay season, and I know we all can’t wait to get out on fresh clay courts come spring. As we head inside for the winter months, please check the pro shop for the winter tennis and pickleball schedule. Please stay tuned for new programming coming for both tennis and pickleball this month as well as some exciting events being held during the month of November.

As the weather gets colder, we will also look to get back on the platform tennis courts. Please stay tuned for some exciting November paddle play and hanging out near the toasty fire pit with some warm drinks and fun. We will be looking to start paddle leagues this month so please be on the lookout for more information.

We hope to have an incredible tennis month culminating with the start of the holiday season. We hope to see you out on the courts no matter what racquet or paddle you are using.

Reminders At the recent Board meeting a decision was made regarding the Food and Beverage Minimum. As of October 1, 2023, we will no longer “roll over” any unused minimums to the next cycle. This decision was not made lightly, so please come with family or friends that one extra time and use that minimum so that we help the Club and the F & B Staff.

Additionally, we addressed the “Walk-on” requirements for Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Courts. As of October 15, a ‘’walk-on” will only be considered by calling the Pro Shop after 9am the same day. If you make a reservation on-line prior to that time you will be charged the posted court fees.
