VOL. 1 ISSUE 3 • JUNE 2021
THE BULLETIN Official Newsletter of the Louisville Boat Club
From the Crow's Nest Before you read this month’s newsletter, let's stop for a moment and thank a few members. Gar Davis and his crew have been on the grounds since January cutting out wood rot, shoring up columns, and doing a hundred other jobs big and small, all to keep your club’s physical structures healthy and secure. Stockie Rhawn has spent no less time with his crews doing much of the same thing – fixing, repairing, painting -- and just overall making sure things look beautiful. Then there is John Cark. John and his crew have been moving heaven and earth to create a bocce court out of raw dirt and to carve a serpentine path for the new Legacy Walk back to the pickle courts. Wayne Wilson, the admiral of admirals, has been putting his shoulder to the task of opening the docks. Wayne’s the one organizing slips and making sure each one is dredged to the proper depth. The docks may be somewhat out of sight but Wayne is certainly not out of mind. (More incredibly, all of these fine gentlemen are doing what they are doing as a labor of love – a prime example of what taking “ownership” of the Club truly means.) Speaking of labors of love, our Entertainment Committee has more events scheduled than you can shake a stick at – and if they’re anything like the utterly fantastic, New Member Party on May 21st, you can count yourself lucky to have such a determined group working for you. Not only do they have family events, sports competitions, and special themed events scheduled for us, but they’re also looking after our after-hours interests, too, with Friday Night Live music almost every Friday night until the end of summer. Read on for details. One final note -- the pickle courts are open but the landscaping and the final furniture are not there yet, so please bear with us. In the debate between waiting to unveil a perfect complex and the press of members wanting to play now, we opted for play, so things are a little rough around the edges, particularly coming from the Pavilion. It will soon be something about which you can be terribly proud but, in the meantime, if you’re going down to watch the play, wear some good shoes and watch out for those pesky pebbles. That’s it. As always, our thanks to you for being so enthusiastic, and our wishes for a summer of fun as only your Louisville Boat Club knows how to do it. Doug Keeney, President
