I knew it was going to be tough to fill the shoes of our out-going President, Doug Keeney, since he has done such a terrific job over the past two years but then I realized the task of writing the update from the President each month is now on me! It is not fun trying to follow up his informative, professionally written “Behind the Scenes” each month
Over the Holidays I read an interesting article on the need for society to re-find their “third place” after these last few years If you are unfamiliar with “third place” it is a term coined by a sociologist in the ‘80s that describes a place outside your home (1st place) or work (2nd place) where you can relax and hang out
According to the article, as our office has moved more to the home and our homes have become smarter: order food in, shop online, and watch Netflix; many people are missing the importance of the Third Place The author even goes so far as to say the next epidemic will be isolation and lack of relationships!
Important characteristics of a great Third Place: 1 "engaging conversation where humor and wit run free” 2. Good food and drink to accompany conversation 3. There are “regulars” 4 “You want to return to have fun ” As Members, I believe these are the underlying reasons we are all attracted to a place like the Louisville Boat Club It is not just a place to go eat or a place to exercise It should be a place where you relax, recharge, improve your skills and be with friends
Our recent LBC survey results certainly enforce the importance to you of these characteristics of a 3rd Place Your current Board of Directors and LBC Staff are laser-focused on following through on the wellthought-out suggestions from the survey and improving in any areas that did not meet acceptable standards
I encourage each of you to do something new for you at LBC this year Whether a new racket sport, more time on the river, a fitness class, or bocce…make your visit to the Club enjoyable
Talk to you next month, Tom
CampbellWe are already a month into 2023, and we are looking at a great year
We are starting off with a very successful first quarter of the fiscal year with a positive net of $56,450 after depreciation, which is $32,000 over budget One big reason is, we had a great holiday banquet season Thank you George for your great work!
The Entertainment Committee has the first 6 months of 2023 planned out; with the annual events and new offerings, we have a full calendar already I just booked Tony and the Tan Lines for the August Dock Party
The Board and I would like to thank all those Members who took the time to complete the 2022/23 survey In reading through the comments both good and adverse, we can see where you would like us to make some changes in the Club structure and operations We have heard and will act on your suggestions where feasible
As always, Membership growth is most important to the lifeblood of any Club Bring your friends and business associates into your circle at the Club! We offer a Food and Beverage credit equal to 10% of the Initiation Fee paid by your invitee as a thank you to you for sponsoring them But bring them in before April 1st as the Initiation Fees will be raised from the current $5000 to $7500 We also have a Legacy Membership for your immediate family Members (children, grandchildren, parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters which is a way to perpetuate your family’s heritage in the Club Legacy Members only have to pay 50% of the published Initiation Fee and regularly posted dues and fees
The Team and I thank you for your constructive comments because it is through those that we can improve your Member experience in your Club
The future looks great, and together we will do great things!
Sincerely,
DavidLBC.
In 2023 we are looking forward to offering you the same great level of coaching on the tennis courts and introducing new and fun clinics, fast feeds, team practices, and events for both adult and junior members. We also plan on bringing back some of the most successful events from the past and making them even more exciting going forward. Look out for the Indoor Club Championships to be held February 17th and 18th. Our junior clinics, “Future Stars” for ages 7-10 and "Hot Shots" for ages 10-12, are still running strong in 2023 so make sure you get your young aspiring tennis players signed up each week Finally, at the end of January we introduced a couple of new adult clinics for the beginner and intermediate levels The beginner clinic, named “Shot of the Day” will offer a great chance to learn stroke technique and the tactical play that corresponds with that stroke We are also going to offer an adult intermediate clinic for 2 5-3 5 players who wish to improve their doubles and singles play Keep an eye out for the starting dates of those clinics, be ready to improve your game, and have a ton of fun
Kelly Marie Bohnert will continue to run many fun clinics, leagues, and pickleball events throughout the course of the year Starting in February, she will be providing a new beginner and intermediate pickleball clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays respectively as well as a pickleball 101 clinic on Saturday before the weekly organized league play starts at 2pm Also, in March, look for announcements on the pickleball member/member event
Throughout the rest of the winter, we will be ramping up our platform tennis and getting members out playing as much as possible There are two heated and well-lit courts plus the patio and fire pit next to the playing area to relax and socialize after a session of intense play We will be incorporating some fun platform tennis events during the end of January, February, and March as well as holding weekly organized league play, until the weather turns warm On February 11th, we are having a Member/Member Paddle Tournament and we hope you will join us for some great fun and competition Keep an eye out for updates and get those paddles warmed up to play some Platform Tennis this winter
On behalf of Robbie, Drew, Kelly-Marie, Stephen, myself and the rest of the racquets and pro shop staff, we hope to see you on the courts this winter and have a ton of fun playing, teaching, and socializing We are going to have a great 2023 So, let’s get on the courts and play!
Well, we are right in the thick of the school squash season and the kids are having a BLAST We have had many new kids discovering squash here at LBC
Please see the attached newsletter for the results on just several of the school matches that have been played here in the last 2 months On Jan 6-8, we also had a HS Boys and girls team travel to St Louis to play in a HS national championships qualification event The Collegiate HS boys team played 6 matches and won 3 and lost 3 The all-new Collegiate girls HS team played 5 and lost 5, however, this is the very first ever varsity girls’ school squash team in Kentucky history to compete! On top of that, I took 20 kids over to Cincinnati to compete against Seven Hills School at MS and HS levels They all represented Louisville and LBC with great sportsmanship We are hosting the return fixture here at LBC next month and will keep you posted on the date
We also had 2 LBC juniors, Ward McGill and Patrick Gustafsson, travel to Atlanta last weekend to compete in a junior gold event, this was a very strong event and both kids battled hard against very strong players
I am extremely proud to say that LBC currently has 21 nationally ranked juniors, our current highest ranked player Jacob Grissom currently stands at 65 in the country in the boys under 19s and will be attending Amherst College this summer to play on their squash team These kids are traveling all over the country to compete and the growth within the club is amazing to see. Very well done to you all for your hard work practicing and training. Keep it up.
On the adult front last weekend, we had Tyler Thomas compete in the 80’s category of the Century Doubles Tournament in New York, and his partner Andrew Muran 25 years old from New York They made it all the way to the final which was awesome to see In the final Tyler and Andrew came out hot and managed to take a strong 2-0 lead, they lost the 3rd game on a tiebreak 14-15! The match then went all the way to the 5th game and eventually due to an injury to Andrew, they had to retire at 5-5 Tyler was so close to lifting this prestigious title - guys fantastic achievement Jay Hatcher also played in the Legends event in the Century Doubles with his partner Charlie Parkhurst from Connecticut They got through to the quarter-finals and lost a very tight match in the 5th and deciding game They finished 5th out of 16 so again fantastic news for the double’s players from LBC Well done to you both
Next, up for the adults is team Louisville men travelled to the Cincinnati Country Club on Friday 27th & Sat 28th Jan to compete in the prestigious Hahn Cup competing against Cincinnati and Indianapolis There will be singles and doubles matches played between all 3 cities, so look out for an update to come
Finally, I am delighted to say that when we host our US Squash Louisville Junior Silver tournament here on Feb 4/5 we have over 70 kids coming into Louisville to compete Cheers, Lee
The participants in the Pickleball Paddles Up Tournament presented by Baird Private Wealth Management had a blast! This was LBC's first DUPR indoor tournament that took place on December 30th & 31st.
