An amazing event just happened at the Louisville Boat Club After months of planning and a little luck with the weather our staff and army of volunteers pulled off the annual City Meet swim competition at the LBC with flawless execution Our member, Reid Hafer, chaired a committee that covered every detail and contingency while our staff/employees worked unimaginable hours leading up to the event and throughout the weekend For our members not involved, a special thank you to you, too, as your patience was certainly tested for your regular activities at the Club were postponed for a few days Please read elsewhere in the newsletter for more accolades and City Meet results
This is a great time of year at the Club and there is still plenty of Summer remaining with more activities at the pool and pavilion, the upcoming Dock Party, prime boating days, Tennis Club Championships, and Labor Day festivities on the horizon
Whether you are a Club member for “ x ” number of years, a current or past Board Member or a current President of our 150-year-old Club, it is a continuous effort to keep the history and tradition of the LBC preserved while taking action to improve the Club for current and future members
Future Club planning is now on deck after getting through many internal improvements, the Boat Race, and City Meet The current Board can now focus more on recent survey suggestions and other large projects at the Club while also considering important “facelifts” and maintenance needed Large projects include expanding our Indoor tennis facility to include more tennis courts, designated pickleball courts, an additional squash court, and a Padel court Other suggestions include a golf facility on the grounds, a fishing pond, and lighted tennis courts Also, an expansion of the Clubhouse 2nd floor to create more space for weddings, meetings and storage On the “facelift” list, we need to update the décor of the 2nd floor to keep pace with our recent upgrade to the Crow’s Nest While our pool pavilion is spectacular, an upgrade to our entire pool area is well overdue On the “ nofun” but imperative maintenance list: new roof for the Clubhouse, re-paving all our parking lots, and an overhaul of our Kitchen
It is an exciting time at the LBC and all these discussions are very encouraging for the future of the Club! But now is the time to prioritize and put the discussions into action
Enjoy the last 6 weeks of summer and see you around the Club

The Louisville Boat Club was proud to host the 2023 CCSA Swim and Dive Championships July 13-16 We hosted over 3000 guests and over 700 swimmers and divers over the weekend LBC put on an amazing event thanks to our wonderful staff and many volunteers We couldn’t have done it without the support of the entire Club!
Cesky Tesin is a happy town nestled on the far eastern border of the former Czechoslovakia between the Czech Republic and Poland It is geographically much closer to Krakow and Slovakia than it is to more familiar names like Berlin and Warsaw and over its last few hundred years it has been claimed variously by Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Germany George Henry is from Cesky Tesin. He grew up there – a “wonderful childhood” as he says – and in those years he both traveled across Europe and Africa, but also worked in the hospitality industry including a job he held in a hotel in Southern Moravia notable for its focus on foreign tourists “It was a castle,” said Henry "And because we catered to foreign guests, you had to speak a half-dozen languages.” George says he’s studied 7 languages, some better than others, although Czech, Polish, and English are his favorites
The hotel years in Czech Republic were formative There he watched the well-dressed and not so well-dressed come and go and he began to form his own style “I believe you should look good,” he said “I like to find things that are beautiful ” More than just dress, however, those years also laid the groundwork for a network of friends that now stretch across the globe and although George loves to travel to see those friends, he calls Louisville home, and happily so He came here in 2000, and joined the Louisville Boat Club in 2001 Over his 23 years he has served under 8 managers He started as a Waiter and moved steadily up the ladder to his current position as Assistant Manager and Director of Hospitality and Banquets Today, he routinely handles wedding parties of 200 with the same ease as a dinner party of 20. “The Boat Club is a very special place,” said George. “We sometimes forget that It is so beautiful and it is right here on the river ”
So where is George’s heart? Some would say it lies with his love of Atticus, his Doberman, and they’d be right about that: he loves his dog Some would say it’s his love of cooking -- and they’d be right again However, most of us would say that it’s his love of people, of us, of friends George is known for all that, yes; but if you ask him that question yourself, you will get a firm and quick answer “You have to take care of somebody,” says George “That’s what makes my life perfect It’s taking care of people ” And that says it all about George Hemry and the joy he brings to us here at the Louisville Boat Club Nothing loud Nothing selfish Just a simple concept: You have to take care of somebody
