Now that the spring has arrived winter did not seem too bad or long. Didn’t feel like that back in February though - walking the dog in mud land. Funny how time can feel so long, but go so quickly.

In this issue it is all about time to get out and about but also time for YOU! Alison Marley joins the team and soothes the brow with a great 1st article.

Method 1. Place the mince, onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic and parsley in a food processor, season well and blend until just combined.

2. Transfer to a bowl and combine the mixture using your hands. Divide into 12 portions and shape each into a thin, flat burger.

3. Preheat your grill to high. Spray the burgers with low calorie cooking spray and grill for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until cooked to your liking.

4. To serve, fill a roll with 2-3 burgers, 30g of Cheddar cheese and your choice of extra fillings.

Spectacular Skies and Long Northern Nights Roger Clegg, on Capturing the Beauty of the Tyne Valley in Spring and Summer Late spring and summer is upon us once again – bringing visions and expectations of long, lazy, hazy days of summer and long, light, northern nights. For me and my type of photography it is the least interesting time of the year. The countryside dons its predominantly green mantle and loses the browns, beiges and oranges of autumn or the bare winter landscapes of winter that I love. There are, of course, exquisite and sometimes spectacular splashes of colour with fields of poppies and blossom and flowers in our parks and gardens.

It is a time of year that I concentrate more on people in my photographs.

To me, there are two types of people photographs. There are the family photographs which I enjoy along with everyone else – sunny days on the beach or in the countryside featuring the grandchildren eating ice creams etc. : we have hundreds of such photographs. There is the other type of photograph that shows people enjoying their summer activities and pastimes e.g. walking along the Hadrian’s Wall path. In this instance I firstly regard the location as a landscape photograph to show it at its best. I then wait for or position people to get them in the right place to complete the composition. My preference is to have the people looking into the landscape or at a particular point of interest rather than at the camera.

I do not desert my passion for atmospheric landscapes. With determination, sunrises and sunsets are achievable, albeit at very antisocial hours. A carefully chosen foreground is very important to avoid too much of the overwhelming greenness. Also there are sometimes very dramatic skies and lighting during the day. The power of the sun can make some heavy impending rain or shower clouds appear almost black. Showers occurring on days like this can create spectacular landscapes with rainbows or double rainbows.

Many of my photographs are on display at Artful at 13 Battle Hill in Hexham. Artful is well worth a visit – it can frequently answer that unanswerable question ‘What on earth can I buy so and so?’. Until 18th June there will be an exhibition of my photography as well as Andrew Whitaker’s really beautiful photographs of Newcastle.

Creating Family Wellness Learn to Manage your Stress!

In bygone days and ancient times, stress played a significant role in our survival and in this context, e.g. fleeing from the big brown bear, it served human kind well – it was an acute, lifesaving reaction to a potentially dangerous or life threatening situation. The stress is present and then it is gone.

Nowadays, we are subject to stress on an ongoing basis, in other words we are chronically stressed. From our time in the womb to the manner in which we are born, there are time constraints and deadlines to meet and birth trauma is inevitable and commonplace. Increasing and intolerable expectations to achieve and excel from toddler years through to early adulthood are forcing children into anxiety and depression. Financial obligations, career schedules, challenging family dynamics and work-life imbalances are driving people into a state of continual ‘fight and flight’ where the sheer number of stress-inducing situations that face us on a daily basis are leaving marinating in stress hormones.

Strategies to employ in terms of managing stress may include: 1. Learning to breath - it sounds obvious, we need to breathe to stay alive, but most people breathe too shallowly. Breathing deeply and exhaling fully can take a bit of practice to become unconsciously competent at it, however, it will help to get rid of the excessive adrenaline coursing through the body – adrenaline being one of the hormones that increases your respiration, heart rate and blood pressure.

Yoga is very good at focussing on the breath for connecting body and mind, and inducing relaxation.

2. Posture - poor posture not only negatively impacts on the capacity your lungs and heart to function properly, but will also make you look at though you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. Look good to feel good. This also goes for your general presentation and demeanour.

3. Exercise - any movement helps to shift stagnation in the body. Many people find this a wonderful stress buster, as the body will release ‘feel good’ chemicals called endorphins which make you feel refreshed and mentally relaxed. Walking is a great way to achieve this and what a beautiful county to explore!

The consequences can be serious. Prolonged stress will cause changes in your immune system as your body struggles to maintain homeostasis. As a result, inflammation increases in the body and is the hallmark of many chronic debilitating diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Is it any wonder that that in spite of advances in technology and medicine, the incidence of chronic health issues are on the increase?

Other health issues associated with chronic stress include memory loss, digestive disturbances, hormonal imbalances and weight gain - especially around ‘the middle’ increasing your risk for developing cardiovascular disease.

Clearly, stress is an inescapable part of life — but it’s important to understand that how you mitigate it and also how you deal with it can determine whether it will translate into health problems later on.

It’s always better to avoid the stress in the first instance– sounds too easy, but it’s easier than you think and will pay dividends: don’t over commit yourself, know your limits and learn to say ‘no’; avoid the energy vampires – these are the people who take and give nothing back, everything is about them; turn off the news –most news items are fear inducing and being exposed to it on a daily basis will do nothing to produce a positive mindset; don’t get caught up in the endless minutiae of the day, focus on the real priorities and forget the rest – effective time management and careful planning is key.

6. Do something nice for others (without expecting anything back in return!) – every Christmas we support the Salvation Army’s Christmas present appeal and it’s a time we all get really excited about (for months in advance!). Think what you could do could do for your community or for someone that needs a little sparkle in their day.

7. Watch a hilarious film - a real ‘side splitting’ laughing session is definitely a great tonic to beat the tensions of the day.

This is a huge topic which I have barely touched upon, but hope that my article gives you a few key steps to make your life a little less stressed.

Find a hobby - I have seen many times people looking forward to getting out of the rat race and into retirement to find the stressors they had during their working life are replaced by different ones. Lose the Word ‘Should’

Become aware of when you’re using the word ‘should’ (‘I should be healthier; I should drink less; I should be a better friend/parent/colleague’). It’s like wagging a huge, judgmental finger at yourself, which can prevent you from doing what you really want. Instead, replace ‘I should’ with ‘I would like’ or ‘I will’: give yourself permission to do what you really want to do.

Find a Way to Say ‘No’

When you say ‘yes’ to things you don’t really want to do, either you do them at the expense of your own happiness or you make excuses later and drop out at the expense of your relationships. Learn to say ‘no’ more, without feeling you have to explain. Being honest with yourself and others and really considering what you do/don’t want to do will make life easier for everyone in the long run.

After a lousy week of all manner of weather including hail, snow, rain and bone-penetrating damp cold air, the garden had reverted back to a soggy mess. How long could this winter go on? It was Sunday morning - I had woken early to see that there had been a heavy frost, making the garden appear as if it had been sprinkled with icing sugar as it now lay glistening like a magic carpet in the early morning spring sunshine. After a quick cup of tea, I set about my early morning rounds. The overpowering sound of the sheep filled the stillness of the countryside - their newly born lambs were enjoying every minute as they frolicked and jumped around with their friends. The glumness of the previous week was now totally dispersed as my spirits were lifted. Now there was excitement and hope. Instead of literally ignoring the garden, I now took in the sights and sounds. Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’, which had been flowering for the last month, was now in its element with the deep, mauve coloured flowers illuminated in the crisp morning light.

As I went to let out the chickens, I was distracted by the cerise pink flowers of bergenia ‘Rotblum’ which were now emerging through the large, maroonstemmed foliage. Further down the garden path, the glossy, bottle-green leaves of ligularia ‘The Rocket’ made a stark contrast against the frosted hops which I use as a mulch. The chaffinches absolutely love to delve into the hops, after what I’m not sure, tossing them around as they get their fill. Other mulches in the garden such as the woodchip help the birds too, especially the blackbirds which dig around for juicy fat earthworms. Moles also seem also seem to enjoy the pleasures of the woodchip. Of course they are the dread of most gardeners but I manage to live with them for two reasons. Firstly, I don’t have much lawn to destroy. Secondly, the moles tend to be happy to stay in the woodchip, leaving relatively small mounds here and there - this doesn’t bother me as I can quickly reshuffle the woodchip with my foot. It’s good to know that the mulches help the soil and benefit the wildlife too.

The chickens emerged from their shed, happy to run and flap their wings and get some sun on their backs. They eagerly search for their first worm of the day which shouldn’t be too far away in the deep layer of garden waste

that I put out for them. Now I was off up the garden to the greenhouse, passing the veg plot, where I quickly checked on my newly planted swedes for slug damage. Oh dear, not so good here as more of them have been nibbled despite the beer trap. Perhaps I should be using Guinness, which Pippa Greenwood swears by, though this does seem rather a precious commodity to give to the slugs. Nevertheless they may hopefully have a happy ending!

In the greenhouse, the tomato plants are doing fine, still in the heated propagator though they are getting pretty big now and will soon need transplanting into the greenhouse beds. My usual method is firstly to dig out the old compost and turn it out on the garden. Then I add a layer of fresh grass clippings, sprinkling with ‘QR’ (Quick Return) compost activator to speed up the decomposition process. Next goes on a layer of green waste compost mixed with spent hops. Comfrey leaves (‘Bocking 14’ variety which is the highest in potassium) are then spread over the top of the compost. The layering is repeated until the bed is full to the top. All the fresh organic matter in the bed becomes food for the bacteria in the soil. The action of the bacteria produces heat in which the tomato plants thrive. The decomposition also unleashes plenty of nutrients for the hungry plants. A cloche over the top of the plants will trap some heat and keep them warm on cold nights. Over the course of the summer the plants will be fed with a mix of compost and hops on top of the roots as they show on the surface – no liquid tomato food is used. I always grow ‘Gardener’s Delight’ which produces masses of tasty toms using my preferred method.

This year I am also growing ‘Super Marmande‘ as my wife likes the large tasty fruits.

After watering the plants in the greenhouse and the polytunnel, I can now return to the house for breakfast. Some of last summer’s rhubarb and ginger jam on toast washed down with nettle tea does the trick nicely.

Newcastle and Tyne Valley owner-operator, Carrie Jarvis, explains how the service works. “We have lots of lovely dogs who need home-fromhome care whilst their owners are away. We meet our customers and their dogs at home for an in-depth interview so that we can then match them up with a compatible host family. Our hosts are dog-dotty and just love to give their furry guests a holiday that’s every bit as good as the one the owner is taking!” So how does it work for the hosts? Tynedale hosts, Doreen and Brenda, give their take on the business.

Doreen is retired and likens hosting to having grandchildren. “You can have all the pleasure of dogs with the advantage that after a lovely stay they go back home! Carrie makes it really easy as the dogs often come for a short “taster stay” before their main holiday and they come with everything they need – food, bowls, beds etc. There’s no outlay, no paperwork to do and it’s good to know we’re covered with Barking Mad insurances. All you need is a good coat and decent pair of shoes - it’s got me out walking again. In the Winter it would be so easy to stay at home if I didn’t have the dogs. I love the companionship and it’s nice when the same dog comes back for another holiday but I also enjoy meeting all the different characters.”

Brenda works part-time as a midwife and hosts when not working. “Carrie came to meet me and the family”, says Brenda “and asked lots of questions about what sort of dogs would be a good fit with our family lifestyle.

We’re an active bunch and have found we get out even more when we have a dog staying with us. We get lots of information on each individual dog and Carrie is always at the end of the phone if we need support so it’s worked out really well. The kids have loved it and having tried it out we’ve now got Teddy, our own Border Collie puppy”. So is that the end of hosting then? “Oh,no! Hosts can have up to two dogs of their own and hosting is a great way to socialise Teddy. We’ll be using Barking Mad as customers too – we know we’re going to get a really professional service that is tailored to Teddy’s needs”.

“It’s very rewarding for me” says Carrie, “when I see how much the hosts get out of their guest dogs. I also see the relief on the owners’ faces when they know their dog is settled and happy in a loving holiday home. Barking Mad is growing apace as more and more people choose a bespoke home-boarding service where their pet is the only doggy guest for his or her holiday.”

The weekend will end with a Songs of Praise service on Sunday at 5pm followed by the sale of the flowers.

Proceeds will be shared between Tynedale Hospice at Home and ‘All We Can’, formerly the Methodist Relief and Development Fund.

Food & Flowers for Kirkharle Following the official launch of Capability Brown’s 300th birthday events last month, Kirkharle continues the theme of celebration with a Food and Flower Fayre on Sunday 1 May. Organised in conjunction with the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) and St Oswald’s Hospice, the Fayre will be in the barn marquee and throughout the Courtyard. Admission from 11am – 4pm, will be by donation.

Fresh, locally made and produced food will be in plentiful supply, including local Ponteland lamb; loose leaf tea, chocolate and accessories from Newcastle-based Easy Teasy, Boulevard Salts from North Shields offering smoked salts, peppercorns, oils and dried mushrooms, Kenspeckle Fudge and Confectionery and Frere Quenelle Liqueurs.

Visitors can also stock up on a wide variety of inexpensive plants grown by local NGS garden owners. The art and craft workshops will be open for business, check www.kirkharlecourtyard.co.uk. It’s just a short walk to pretty St Wilfrid’s church, where Lancelot Brown was baptised and a new plaque to commemorate his life has recently been unveiled on the Coffee House wall.

From an event at the start of the month, another celebratory event involving gardening will take place at the end of May. As the Northumberland County Show takes place at Bywell on Monday 30 May, the show committee decided to join the CB300 celebrations theme and invited school children from Reception to Year 9 to stretch their imaginations and enter a “Dream Garden” design competition. Models, paintings, scale drawings, collages – anything goes! There is still time to enter and children can bring their entries to the ‘Glorious Northumberland’ tent on the showfield at Bywell from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th May or up to 10am on show day. Completed entries will be displayed in the tent to be judged on the day by Nick Owen of the Northumbria Gardens Trust and John and Kitty Anderson from Kirkharle. Once judged, the entries can be seen by the public. Prizes will be awarded.

I teach clients who are new to fly fishing, many of whom are recently retired and looking to find a new interest, and also teach more experienced anglers who decide to improve their casting skills and knowledge of angling. Holidaymakers also make up a good percentage of my clientele and I confess to a feeling of pride in being a Northumbrian when listening to those visiting for the first time, as they discover the many delights on offer to them. Castles, coastline, countryside, hillwalking, quiet roads, the friendliness of locals - and of course fishing - are the main topics of conversation; some of my regulars holiday in Northumberland several times a year, although some on occasions complain about the climate!

Of course anglers in Northumberland are really spoiled for choice whatever their quarry may be. Newcomers to the sport usually opt to begin their fishing experience on still waters as they can sometimes be the easiest option to catch a fish. For the river angler, the availability of quality fishing is some of the best in the country. Our famous river Tyne and its tributaries, along with the smaller but equally beautiful rivers Coquet, Aln and Till, offer fishing either by day ticket, or through membership of angling clubs and syndicates if you are fortunate enough to locate details from existing members, although this may involve joining a waiting list of hopeful applicants.

Last year was not a good season for the salmon anglers due to lack of rain: rain is vital to raise the river levels to allow easy passage upstream for the fish to

spawn. When the rain eventually arrived, the backlog of fish running the Tyne in particular was phenomenal and during October, spectators packed the footpath on the Tyne Bridge at Hexham to view their migration upstream as they attempted to ascend the weir below. Not all of these fish are salmon. Sea trout, as their name suggests, also migrate to sea and return to spawn, and as some are as large as the salmon, it takes an experienced eye to distinguish between the species.

Tynedale North of the Wall Archaeological Group (NOWTAG) have won a £9,000 Sharing Heritage Grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for their exciting and innovative ‘Beyond The Wall: Edges Green’ project. Led by local volunteers this is the first systematic ‘on the ground’ archaeological exploration of the largely unexplored landscape north of Cawfields Gap. The project will identify and record evidence of human occupation in this area of over a period of at least 4,000 years, demonstrating that there is much more to the history of the area than just the Roman occupation.

Unearthing Archaeological Sites During the late 1990’s and early 2000’s Northumberland National Park Authority commissioned Tim Gates to conduct an extensive aerial photographic survey of the Hadrian’s Wall corridor from Chesters to Greenhead with the support of English Heritage and the National Trust.

However, resources for necessary follow-up surveys on the ground were limited.

The advent of Tynedale North of the Wall Archaeology Group in 2013, with the support of the National Park, has enabled community volunteers to conduct a series of landscape surveys north of Hadrian’s Wall. These volunteer surveys have already led to the discovery of many significant, previously unknown, archaeological sites. The work of local volunteers has been highly commended by professional archaeologists.

Bronze Age Burial Sites in Tynedale Phil Bowyer, Chairman of NOWTAG, said ‘Over the last two and a half years, our community volunteers have done some amazing work in surveying Ravensheugh Crags, Sewingshields, Davy’s Lee and Standingstone Rigg, all just north of Hadrian’s Wall. Together we are adding significantly to the story of human activity locally over at least 4,000 years. New discoveries

include outstanding examples of late Neolithic/early Bronze Age Rock Art, Bronze Age burial sites and settlements, plus medieval shielings and farmsteads. The area we are focusing on in ‘Beyond The Wall: Edges Green’ lies north of Cawfields Gap. The group is most grateful to local farmers for allowing us access to their land.’ Volunteers will be given specialist training to help them to uncover more finds.

‘Volunteers will also be surveying rock art sites elsewhere in Tynedale to update data on the “England’s Rock Art” website. Our thanks must go to Northumberland National Park Authority who have provided on-going support and awarded us a grant of £2,000 to go alongside the Heritage Lottery Fund grant. Skipton Building Society’s Grassroots Giving Scheme also awarded us £500 towards equipment costs.’

Get Involved in Exploring our History Stan Beckensall, President of NOWTAG, local historian and author explains, ‘I am proud and honoured to be President of this community group, which is doing some excellent work enhancing the archaeological understanding of the landscape north of Hadrian’s Wall. We are encouraging anyone interested, of any age and ability, to come and get involved in exploring our history.’

Beyond The Wall: Edges Green runs for a year, with the first landscape surveys beginning on Saturday, 23rd April, with training workshops for volunteers in Hexham on April 30th and May 7th. No previous experience is required and new volunteers are warmly welcomed.

There will be a guided walk around Weetslade Country Park on Sunday May 22nd led by a volunteer guide and our chairman Chris Wright a well known birder and ringer. There are good footpaths and parking.
