BEFORE

AFTER

Mrs. P from Ryton hated her existing pine spindled staircase. She also needed more storage as well as coat hanging. Nook Design replaced the spindles and posts, painted them in ivory to match the new understairs storage units, along with a solid oak handrail and seat, complimented by brass coat hangers and handles.

“The new hall looks brilliant, I have so much storage space. The attention to detail in design and fitting was outstanding”

Lichens

They are living all around us, on our houses, paths, fences and trees in the garden. They may be a dull grey, a vivid green, chocolate brown or even a bright yellow but most of us will simply pass them by without a second thought. Lichens are everywhere but few of us know anything about them. Lichens may be overlooked but they are a rather unusual life form. Many of us know a bit about fungi, we eat them as mushrooms or perhaps shy away from them as toadstools or mould. All fungi, edible or deadly, good or bad, have one thing in common – they can’t make food like a plant does and have, instead, to take it from a host. Sometimes the relationship involves a bit of give and take other times they just take. It’s actually the same with lichens. Lichens are a mix of fungi and algae, the algae make the food the fungi make use of that food. Britain is home to many hundreds of species of lichen, some extremely common and some exceedingly rare. What most lichens have in common though is no easy-to-remember English name. Therefore, trying to get to grips with them is not for the faint hearted. Xanthoria parietina and Hypogymnia pysoides may sound exotic but are possibly two of our most common species. There are a few exceptions such as old man’s beard that straggles from trees or rocks or the locally rare lungwort that was used (unsuccessfully) to cure lung ailments due to looking a little like a green lung. One bonus, however, in looking at lichens is that they are visible all year round. Damp weather is the best time to look at them as they swell up a little and take on their natural colour, dry they can become shrivelled, crispy and dulled. So while many plants are dormant in the winter lichens can still be studied. Lichens have a couple of ways of creating new lichens. They may produce spores of their fungal part. This rather hit and miss form of reproduction requires that on landing the spore finds a suitable algae so that it can strike up the necessary relationship. The second method is to create a small piece of lichen that can be carried off by the wind, water or by a passing creature. On dropping in a new spot all this has to do is stay put and grow. Lichens do grow in most environments from the rocky shore to the top of the UK’s highest hills, from heavy metal contaminated ground to a woodland tree, from gravestones to wild cliff faces. However, lichens don’t like competition from plants – where plants grow well lichens generally don’t. Lichens also like a stable, unmoving, place on which to grow. Rocks are good, so are trees but soil or sand are not so well used. In our area some of the best lichen places to search for lichens are our older woodlands and our graveyards. Woodlands may, if conditions suit, be hanging with lichens. Lichens do not damage trees they simply use them as a handy place to grow, free from competition from most other plants except mosses. In general the older and damper the wood the more lichens are found. Some are very good indicators of truly ancient woodland, others are less fussy. Oak trees are best for lichens while species such as yew are simply unsuitable. Gravestones are also great places to look as each gravestone is a mini cliff face complete with miniature ledges where the letters have been carved. So next time you are out just give lichens a second glance, you may not be in a position to identify the species and put names to them but it’s still possible to appreciate the shapes and forms and patterns they make on rocks and stones or clasping onto the branches of trees.

6 tips to avoid a flat battery this winter.

heated wing mirrors and short journeys all take their toll on the battery. Try turning off everything you don’t need, especially when first starting the car.

2. Take a load off

When starting the car press the clutch - you need to in a lot of new cars. This can reduce the effort needed to start the engine and therefore take some of the strain away from the battery. Add this to point one for a better chance of getting started. 3. Keep on driving Short journeys mean more work for the battery. This is because the car’s alternator (internal battery charger) doesn’t have time to replace the energy you used to start the car and warm it up. A longer journey not only restores that energy but warms the engine bay and battery to give it better performance and charging ability.

4. Service your car

A poorly maintained vehicle can hamper the performance of the battery, from underinflated tyres to an overworked engine. Keeping your car in tip-top condition can mean you’re not left cursing it on a freezing winter morning.

5. Try once and then wait.

If you try to start your car and it almost does. Stop, turn off all electrical items in the car and then wait 5-10 mins and try again. It’s not guaranteed but it can ‘sometimes’ work when a battery is just on its way out. Once this happens think about replacing it.

6. Don’t flog a dead horse or battery

Waking up to a flat battery can be a massive pain, and it’s generally on dark, cold winter mornings when you need it like a hole in the head. Without getting too technical the main reason batteries fail in the winter is when they are nearing the end of their life, the cold slows the chemical process in the battery causing it to leave you wondering how to get to work, or get the kids to school. .

Sometimes you have to concede that the battery has given its all and let’s face it after 5+ years of abuse it is not as bad as it might sound. A new battery can be expensive, especially from a main dealer or roadside recovery van, who may also charge to programme it on the computer. But you can save by finding a good independent garage that will replace the battery and save you a considerable amount in the process.

In general, a battery will last 3-5 years depending on usage, and you’ll find that is also the duration of most warranties. Of course, the easy answer is to replace the battery, but what could you have done to make sure it didn’t let you down?

If you would like a price on a new battery, Ryton Tyre Centre offers very competitive pricing on car batteries and offer a FREE coolant check when replacing them. They also cover exhausts, tyres, servicing, brakes, diagnostics and wheel alignment.

1. Switch off

Ryton Tyre Centre is also community-focused and gives 5% of annual profits back to the local community, follow them on Facebook or visit

Not only do the colder months affect battery performance, but it is also when we put the most strain on them. Cold starts, heaters, heated seats,

Self-care, the solution to your health and wellbeing. I recently came across a quote on social media, “A smart girl knows her limits. A wise girl knows she doesn’t have any”. Whilst I fully understand, and support, the spirit in which it was written, (to motivate, to empower and to create a positive mindset), it did prompt me to think of how often we push ourselves beyond out limits, ignoring signals from our body and the negative effects this has on our health and wellbeing. If we listen closely to our body, we will recognise the signals that we are reaching our limit; the tiredness, the fatigue, mood changes, irrational responses, lack of motivation, low immunity and even change in sleeping, eating and exercise patterns.

3. Keep it simple-When you investigate self-care options it can often feel like you are getting sucked down a rabbit hole. Seeing the amount of options available can often trigger a sense of overwhelm and stress, leaving people confused as to where to start, or in some cases, leaving them feeling despondent and not starting anything at all. Take time to identify some of your core values and then introduce self-care options which will support those values. For example, if learning is one of your values, then create a block of time, even if it’s only 10 minutes a day, to read or listen to books/blogs/audios which support this. 4. Cost of self-care.: One of the top misconceptions of self-care is that it is too expensive, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Your selfcare routine needs to fit your budget. There are plenty of free options available, like going for a walk, or sitting quietly, undisturbed, with a cuppa in your hand, savouring the stillness and quietness around you. Some other less expensive options are buying flowers, having a candle lit shower/bath or downloading songs from an artist whose music really lifts your spirits.

In 2018 the largest known study of stress levels in the UK was commissioned by The Mental Health Foundation. The results showed that “74% of people felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed and unable to cope. 32% had experienced suicidal thoughts and 16% said they selfharmed as a result of the stress.” The UK does is not alone in these numbers, across the globe we are seeing a steady increase in these staggering stress statistics. Stress, the age-old human suffering that is affecting all people of all ages. Since stress was first recognised, we have perpetually struggled to find ways to deal with it. There are many solutions out there, yet I find one of the best ways to manage stress is through making time for self-care. Selfcare is defined as “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.” Mindsets around self care are changing. What was once seen as selfish is now being recognised as essential for wellbeing as more and more people reap the benefits of improved health and happiness through self-care practises. This change in mindset has been hugely boosted by healthcare professionals recognising the benefits of self-care programs and recommending them as part of the patient’s wellness regime. Some important factors to consider when starting your selfcare program. 1. Time- An old school of thought was that self-care needed to take hours, i.e. a day at the spa. This is no longer the case. Self-care can take as little as 3 minutes a day. When I work with chronic workaholics or people pleasers, who are not able to put their needs first, I often recommend they start with just a minute to themselves and then slowly increase the time. What ever time you allocate for your self-care program will be beneficial to you. You can slowly increase your time as you go along. 2. Discipline- Our biggest consumer of time is technology. It is going to take a little discipline to put gadgets down or on silent so you can dedicate the time you created to yourself, without interruptions. If it helps, set a timer. Know that you can go back to your gadgets once the timer had gone off. Discipline helps create the new habits you are trying to achieve for yourself.

20

To help you pull these points together, here is the following scenario. If you are on a limited budget and some of your core values are 1) keeping fit, 2) the pleasure gained from being in nature,3) and spending time with the family. Going for a weekly forest or riverside walk with the family will tick all your boxes. Schedule the day and length of the walk to suit all family members and then stick to it. If your health is at the top of your priority list this year, then time for self-care should play an important role in that. Why not join our interactive Selfcare workshop on Saturday 25th January 2020 from 10am-12:30pm and learn to manage your limits as well as develop your self-care toolbox. no fuss, plain English Wills, written by experts I’m Nicole, your local Will Writer and all things estate related! I pride myself on being professional, knowledgeable but most of all honest, open, and straight forward with a no fuss approach. The world of Wills and Estate Planning can seem a daunting one. Whether you want to make sure your children’s future is protected by appointing guardians should the worst happen, or if you are concerned about care home fees and making decisions for yourself in the future I can help and make this a simple process for you. I offer a face to face service at a time that suits you or a telephone service if you prefer. Make sure you protect what matters the most to you, for those who matter the most.

Nicole Dean - Will writer

“We worked with Nicole Dean recently who provided us with a will, the process was seamless and she explained every little detail. She made what could be quite a daunting/overwhelming process, simple and easy. Her gentle, warm and friendly approach made us feel at ease straight away, the cost of the will was also less than expected, which was a nice surprise!

Thanks again Nicole for making the process so straightforward, I have already recomended this service to friends and family.” Chloe Hill “Had my Will done by Nicole today. I’m awful at these kind of things so I was surprised at how easy she made it. It was all done over the phone and only took 20mins. my Will was sent

right out special delivery right away. Can’t recommend Nicole enough.” - James Green “We’ve just had our appointment with Nicole, she was fabulous! So professional and knowledgeable but made us feel so comfortable, such a great company to choose to put your affairs in order, would highly recommend” - Hayley Dickinson

Backups backups backups

It is vital that everyone who uses a computer to store their data performs a regular backup. I received a call from two people recently that had problems with their computer’s hard disk. I had a look at them and realised that there was nothing I could do to rectify the problem. All of the users’ data (documents and photos) had been lost – one of the hard disks had pictures of the user’s dogs that were stored nowhere else: she had lost them for ever. This is the part of my job that I really don’t like: telling people that I’ve not been able to recover their data and finding out that they have not been routinely backing up their system. One machine was 18 years old and she had never backed up her files. Sadly, machines are not invincible and can have hardware failures. This isn’t a problem if you perform backups routinely. Backups can be simple ones – where you copy all of your documents over to an external hard disk or can be automatically backed up to a cloud server. A cloud server is simply a hard disk that is stored somewhere in the world that is accessible to you by way of your internet connection. External hard disks cost around £50 and have enormous capacities – 1 TB (terabyte) or more. If you have a google account (and most people who have android phones will have), you get 15 GB of cloud storage with your account for free. And you can install their backup and sync program so that your files are automatically synchronised and your documents are then accessible from any device (phone or PC) that has an internet connection. So there are many ways that you can mitigate against hardware failures. And

all are either free or relatively cheap. I wouldn’t recommend backing up your data onto CDs/DVDs – these can degrade and fail over time. You could backup to USB stick, but again, these can easily develop a fault and if you’re anything like me – I’m always losing them as they are so small. Another question I am asked is how regular I should backup. This all depends on how often you add to your data (eg photos) or how often you change your documents. If you backup only once a month, then the most that you will ever lose is 30 days of data. If 30 days’ worth of data is a lot of data for you, then you need to think of backing up much more regularly. For businesses, I would always recommend that you backup your documents constantly and this can be done automatically using some of the many cloud technologies out there. For home users, you can be a bit more relaxed depending on how often you add to your data. If you’d like some advice on backing up your data, please get in touch with me. Countryfile Showcase with Paul Stangroom

I spent an excellent 2 days with Countryfile‘s production team this winter, Matt and Dan, as they filmed me painting near Stagshaw, Corbridge for the show. The theme of the programme was Teesdale - and Northumberland. They were both lovely guys and I enjoyed showcasing the beautiful Tyne Valley and Teesdale. Producer Matt wanted to see me exploring Northumberland to find windows, houses and landscapes to paint, so we drove and walked up past Stagshaw, Corbridge, to film at Wall Fell Farm, past the Errington Coffee House. The old house there has crumbled even more since I painted it last and the lintels are lethal now! Next, we walked across to Great Whittington Fell. They filmed me painting from the inside of the abandoned old building there, looking out through a window to the north. The window is probably an old pantry one. On return to Great Whittington Fell for the actual filming after the initial recce, in the strong light of day I saw that the stone had a slightly greener tinge, and I needed to rework my painting to be true to the scene. They also filmed me working in my gallery. These paintings & prints are on show in my gallery.

There is something uniquely motivating about the turn of a year. Though nothing has changed, anything seems possible. For many the change in digits is the ‘ready, steady, go’ needed to, well, go. Or maybe there is something in the reflection on the old year that makes us evaluate what we want to change. A study by BUPA (2015) found that less than half of us keep our resolutions, so what can we do to maximise our chance of success? Since 2016 I have coached over 300 C25k runners, following the NHS programme. Some have completed the programme, these are their stories and my tips to success if 2020 is the year you Go Run! 1. Have a plan. Targets give us focus and hold us accountable. Use the NHS C25k app,set a date to start and plan your runs every week. 2. Find a buddy, group or a club with a beginner’s offer. Look on www.englandathletics.org or www. runtogether.co.uk. 3. Check your equipment. Make sure your trainers are suitable for running and check with your GP if you have any health worries prior to beginning. 4. Accept that we all have different physical abilities. Don’t compare yourself to other people, you are only trying to be a fitter version of yourself. 5. Set yourself a goal. Enter a race or register for parkrun. It’s weekly, 5k and free. 6. Not likely!

“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” Mark Twain popularised this saying, which he wrongly attributed to Benjamin Disraeli. (The connection between lies and Prime Ministers is another subject that we won’t explore here!) Statistics, with which our previous article finished, can certainly be misleading, either by deliberate misuse or because many people just don’t understand it very well. In mathematical terms, the probability of something happening or being true can be expressed as a number between zero (0), totally impossible, and one (1), a complete certainty; alternatively we can multiply everything by 100 to give a probability between 0 and 100%. When it comes to dice, throwing just one gives six possible results with equal probabilities of 1/6. If you repeat this many times over, you expect to get the numbers 1–6 roughly equal numbers of times, but how nearly equal should they be and how much of a deviation should make you suspect dice loading? The answer depends on how many throws you’ve made and can itself vary if you repeat the whole experiment again. Statistics handles such questions with formal concepts like probability distributions, standard deviations, and confidence limits. Throwing two dice together gives 36 possible pairs of numbers (6×6), the combined total ranging from 2 to 12. The eleven different totals aren’t equally probable because there’s only one way of making 2 and one way for 12, but 6 ways of making 7, which is the most likely total. So the probability distribution (flat) for the result of a single throw is different from that (with a central maximum) for two dice throws added together. Statistics recognises many different distributions, some of which occur often in scientific research, affecting experimental measurements and results calculated from them. Here are some situations in which statistics are misused or misunderstood. The first is league tables for things like school exam and test results, university research assessment exercises, and hospital performance. A lot is made of positions in a league table and how they change from one occasion to another, annually or at other intervals. This concern ignores at least two factors that can seriously affect the meaning and value of such comparisons. The first is that the various contributions to the league tables involve putting numerical scores on things that aren’t always precisely measurable, and usually no indication is given of the level of uncertainty in these numbers. So each “total score” that is given as a single number should really have what statisticians call a “confidence interval” around it, such as 56±3 to suggest the answer could easily range from 53 to 59. In most cases sensible confidence intervals (uncertainties in the scores) are considerably larger than the differences in scores for whole wide ranges of positions in the table, so the positions themselves are really subject to quite large uncertainties. Secondly, judging criteria are often changed from year to year, so movements up and down don’t necessarily reflect a real change in performance. Similar criticisms can be made of opinion polls, or at least of the way they are reported and interpreted. The main problem here, quite apart from

48

whether people are telling the truth when answering questions, is that an opinion poll surveys a small proportion of the entire population and is supposed to give the same result as if everyone were asked. Statisticians call this sampling a population (or distribution) and it’s vital that the sample is genuinely representative if the results are to be valid. The size of the sample

is also important: the smaller it is, the larger the uncertainties in the results. To be fair, the reporting of opinion polls before an election has improved in this respect in recent years, with explanations often given of the likely uncertainly levels and sample sizes, but small changes are still seized on by some of the media. Extremes of probability – near-certainties and very tiny probabilities – are particularly prone to misuse, partly because most people struggle to understand extremely small and large numbers that have to be written in special notation such as 1082 which means 1 followed by 82 zeros, very approximately the number of atoms estimated to be in the observable universe. I’ll give you just one example to end what’s been a rather dry article this time – congratulations if you’ve stuck with it so far – and we’ll look at some more misunderstandings next time in, I hope, a lighter vein. The first British astronaut, Helen Sharman, recently said “Aliens exist, there’s no two ways about it. There are so many billions of stars out there in the universe that there must be all sorts of different forms of life.” In a previous article we saw how the probability of extra-terrestrial life (ETL) can be seen as the result of multiplying together the likely number of planets capable of supporting life (probably a very large number) and the probability of life existing on any one planet (an extremely small number). Helen Sharman has taken the first of these and ignored the second; for her, the result is essentially a probability of 100% (“no two ways about it”). I think her expertise in aeronautics is probably greater than her grasp of statistics (but I’m not going to put a figure on the probability!).

Drummers descend on Hexham for the 1st Drum Festival. International stars from the world of Drumming are heading to Hexham to bring us all a free, all day Drum Festival culminating in an evening Gala Concert, at Hexham’s Queen’s Hall on Saturday 25th January 2020. The Mark Jon Bolderson Percussion Foundation, set up in memory of Hexham born drummer Mark Bolderson, are hosting the event with funding from Northumberland County Council’s Cultural Fund. There will be performances and workshops throughout the day for all to try a hand at different styles of drumming and the evening Gala Concert will commence with Internationally renowned street drumming troop ‘Spark’ lighting up the stage. They have performed all over the globe with the majority of the performers hailing from the North East so it will be electrifying to have them support the Foundation on home turf. It will also feature Owen Gunnell, Millennial Percussion and The Corp of Army Musicians. There are a limited number of free tickets for the Concert, available now at The Queens Hall box office. The day will open with local lad Martyn Kaine who since studying under North East Drum Educator Geoff Hutchinson, has gone on to international fame playing with Kyle Eastwood (Clint’s son!), and with the band Brotherly, to name a few, with a residency at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. Martyn will run a drum kit workshop and will be available throughout the day for one to one drum clinics with Geoff Hutchinson. North Easterner Will Lang is a modern British Folk musician, composer and producer. He will lead a workshop and demonstration on the Irish folk drum Bodhran Will is one of the most versatile musicians on the British Folk scene today and is well known for his collaborations, including Mercury Music Award-winning Nitin Sawhney, The National Youth Choir of Great Britain and Northern Spirit Singers in the BBCs Choir Of The Year. Mark Bolderson was a former student of the now ‘Royal’ Birmingham Conservatoire, and they are sending up their percussion ensemble Millennial Percussion. They play a ground-breaking new repertoire alongside classics from composers like Steve Reich, Iannis Xenakis and John Cage. February 2017 saw the ensemble perform the colossal percussion sextet Persephassa by Xenakis with the

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra percussionists as part of the CBSO Centre Stage series. Other recent Millennial Percussion performances have included the Gymnastics World Cup at Arena Birmingham, performing Ben Wallfisch’s Apex, and BBC Young Dancer Competition 2019 where the ensemble played live on BBC2 TV. They will run 2 workshops and be joined by one of our countries leading percussionists, Owen Gunnell. Since winning the percussion final of BBC Young Musician in 2000, Owen graduated from the Royal College of Music in 2003 and has enjoyed a varied career as a percussionist. He has appeared as a soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, BBC Philharmonic, Britten Sinfonia, Macedonia Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonia Viva, among others. He is one half of the percussion duo ‘O Duo’, who have won many prizes and performed and been broadcast on television and radio all over the world. Following his studies at the Conservatoire Mark Bolderson served as a musician with the Royal Artillery and The British Army are sending up a Corp Of Army Musicians to perform and run a workshop. It will be a great opportunity for youngsters to have a chat about a career in Army music as their recruitment team will be on hand across the day. There will be samba workshops for beginners and support from Prudhoe Community Band in the foyer for an action packed day of drumming! All workshops are free, to register onto a workshop or for a one to one drum clinic session please email Amanda at mjbpercussionfoundation@gmail.com Evening Gala Concert tickets are limited, available free in person at Queen’s Hall box office. CH Event began in 2018... I had suffered from 6 years of ill health. I’m quite open about my struggles with depression and anxiety and having recovered slowly I’d been left with fibromyalgia but was well enough that I could begin doing small amounts of work. A traditional job for me wasn’t going to work. I couldn’t manage my previous career as a chef as fibromyalgia is very debilitating and unpredictable. A friend had signed up to a direct sales company. She found it helped her build up confidence and meet new people but was easy to do from home. I found that for this type of selling at craft fairs wasn’t an option, quite often if it wasn’t handmade you couldn’t have a stall. I wanted to help others in my position that struggled with anxiety or were lonely as they spent all their time making their products then selling them or couldn’t attend because they had direct sales businesses. I set up some small fairs which had a mixture of beauty products and crafts and it proved popular. I wanted to try to create a group where people would get to know each other and build friendships too. Having weekly fairs on Tuesday mornings in the cloisters porch at Hexham Abbey has been a great way to cement these relationships. These have now become a permanent fixture being held every Tuesday morning from 9:30am to 1:30pm. They attract locals and tourists who enjoy the quality products available. We have expanded to holding various events across the Tyne valley. You can find a full list of events on my website www.chevent.co.uk or by following CH Event business page on Facebook. I try to use CH Event and my bodyshop business Lovely Bubbly also on Facebook to do as much charity fundraising as I can, I want to be able to help as many people as possible, even if it’s just with small gestures. I recently raised money and collected items from local businesses to make blessing bags for families with babies in the special care baby unit at the RVI. Myself and my daughter Chloe have done this for 3 years now as a thank you to them for the care we received when Chloe was delivered 6 weeks early. We really enjoy it and it’s become one of our family’s Christmas traditions.

Come visit the fair and say hello or contact me via facebook!

Held at the Cloisters Porch, Hexham Abbey Every Tuesday 9:30am till 1:30pm

In 2008 an American lady, Celeste Mergens, set up the charity Days for Girls International. Her aim is to educate and provide quality, reusable, feminine hygiene products to girls who need them anywhere in the world. Can you imagine not having access to feminine supplies during menstruation every month? DfG is bringing freedom and opportunity to women and girls around the world. To date over a million kits have been sent to 110 countries on six continents. DfG UK is part of this organisation and over the years we have recruited many volunteers to help make up and distribute these valuable ‘kits’. DfG UK is self-funded and there are no paid employees. The Hexham group formed less than a year ago and in June next year we are hoping to send our newly appointed Hexham Ambassador, Phoebe Sanderson to Mwanza, Tanzania with a shipment of kits to distribute to schoolgirls and women of the region. Not only will she educate the girls (and boys) but she will also teach them how to make kits for themselves. She is aiming to set up Enterprise businesses and hopes to buy treadle sewing machines locally which will enable that community to produce their own kits. DfG UK are continually looking for volunteers to sew up and collate the kits needed so if you would like to help please feel free to contact us (details below). We also need donations of fabric, pants and, of course, money! Each kit costs between £8-£10 and will last approximately three years. Can you spare £10? Can you fundraise for us? What’s in a kit Each kit contains a drawstring bag, two shields, 8 liners, two pairs of pants, flannel, soap, a travel bag and an information leaflet. Smalls for All is a charity based in Scotland. They collect and distribute underwear and DfG UK take full advantage of their services! If you have new, sensible, pants you don’t wear then please look at the website and donate them. Traders Index Here at the Tyne Valley Express we always work hard to find good quality local traders. If we didn’t, the magazine would not work for us or for you. Any poor trader will always be removed once we become aware. Our traders are a loyal bunch and most have been with us for years. They also help us list 100’s of What’s on entries for free thanks to their adverts. We are now actively looking for ‘NEW’ local traders and would like our readers help to fill in the WANTED spaces - or even create new ones. So if you are a business owner or know a trader that might benefit from the exposure to 32,000 homes then please get in touch? We promise to look after you too! Are you dreaming of a lifestyle change? New Year is often the time when we look to make changes to improve our lives; if you are dissatisfied in your current job why not follow Carrie Jarvis and her husband, Ian? They run Barking Mad in Newcastle and Tyne Valley, organising and delivering this unique dog sitting service. Their customers’ dogs enjoy bespoke, one-to-one holiday care with their network of local host families. “The job is incredibly uplifting and rewarding.”, says Carrie, “Our customers are so delighted and relieved to find premium, familybased care for their dogs and the hosts absolutely love the opportunity to have a part-time dog or an occasional playmate for their own pooch.” “We came to Barking Mad after decades in the public sector, looking for a flexible, home-based business with a very different focus from our previous careers and are so pleased we made the move! Barking Mad is an award winning, national franchise recently rated #34 in the Elite Franchise Top 100 and they gave us all the support we needed as business novices. Five years later we have grown the business so much we are now looking to sell the Tynedale area. We will continue to operate close to our home, in and around Newcastle-Gateshead, so we are really looking forward to gaining a new colleague and working closely with them. We’ve developed the West of our territory so that it is a starter “business-in-a-box”, just ready and waiting for someone to take it to the next level!” If you would like to find out more about the business opportunity, dog holidays or how to become a host please call Carrie on: 0191 41417264 or email: carrie.jarvis@barkingmad.uk.com
