Looks like we are going to have a wet summer if the past month is anything to go by - think we have been a bit spoilt over the last few years. No matter, it is nice that the days are longer and warmer! My swallows are back too, playing happy families. They never cease to amaze me how hard they graft. Rain or shine, from day break to sunset they never stop. They make me realize I’m a lazy bugger in comparison.

The opposite of me is Russ Greig. Through hard work and sheer endeavour, he has got the new Miners Lamp Cafe open at Eastwoods Park, Prudhoe. A real community hub has been created . Russ is currently giving up his time and efforts and wants the local community to help and connect with the enterprise – see his story on page 49.

My writers are the best bunch the magazine has ever had. I hope you enjoy their thought provoking and unique presentations. The magazine has never wanted to just tow the line as it were and it is good to delve in to subject matter with essence.

Liquorice brings all sorts of benefits

Love it or hate it liquorice has a range of science-backed health benefits. The ingredient of one of the world’s favourite sweets, including the North’s famous Pontefract Cakes, it is used in herbal medicine for fatigue, particularly adrenal stress, but also has memory boosting and protective effects on brain cells. Here we explore some of the science behind the root’s energising effects, and even find a liquorice martini to help the medicine go down.

Can a plant really increase energy?

We have seen the science behind nettle’s remarkable action as an energising tonic. Other plants shown by science to combat mental fatigue and increase mental clarity include the Ayurvedic medicinal plant ashwaghanda, which boosts mood, memory, and stamina in controlled clinical trials. Cocoa also lowers fatigue and relieves symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Today though we look at the use of liquorice as an energiser (though the root has many science-backed medicinal uses from liver complaints to antiinflammatory, spasmolytic, laxative, anti-ulcer, anti-diabetic and more recently anti-depressive).

Historical medicinal use Used in Europe since prehistoric times, the botanical name comes from the Greek for sweet and root. Around 2000BC the Egyptian pharaohs chewed sticks and took it as a sweet drink. It was used in the 1st century by physician Dioscorides, who told Roman soldiers to chew the root to allay thirst. Also known as gan cao in traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed to harmonize other ingredients in a formula. Used in traditional Japanese medicine and in Ayurvedic medicine for rejuvenation and by Western medical herbalists for adrenal insufficiency and as a restorative tonic - being immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial. Researched since the 1950s for its major clinical efficacy in gastric and duodenal ulceration.

500ml) is commonly taken daily for short-term effects. Fresh root is also made into a paste or dried juice stick and dried root can be chewed, and fresh or dried root made into a tincture or liqueur (see recipe). Also taken as capsules and tablets (refer to product for dose and duration). As an ingredient of confectionery, its sweetness is less harsh and longer-lasting than sugar and it doesn’t damage teeth (liquorice lollipops actually protect children’s teeth!) or raise blood glucose.

Safety Considered safe within upper dose limit of 400mg active ingredient glycyorrhizin per day. Caution long-term use at medicinal level since glycyrrhetic acid can accumulate. Contraindicated heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disorders, hypokalemia, fluid retention, with oral and topical corticosteroids and, in theory, with anticoagulants and oral contraceptives at a high or long-term dose. An awareness of steroid effects (elevated blood cortisol) is advised. Caution at a medicinal level in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Side-effects of long-term use at higher doses include hypertension and hypokalemic-induced secondary disorders.

CAUTION Always consult a NIMH affiliated medical herbalist before taking any plant at a medicinal level, inform your health care provider if you are taking medication or have any medical condition and do not stop taking prescribed medication. Be sure of the identity of your plant and take only at the recommended dose and duration.

Liquorice Digestive Martini Liquorice aperitif from La Reine Margot. First, infuse your vodka. To a bottle of vodka, add a stick of liquorice, and leave for at least 30 minutes (or up to two weeks). Obviously, you can vary this timing according to taste. To a shaker filled with ice add 60ml of the infused vodka and 5ml of Pernod. Shake vigorously and strain into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with a strip of liquorice.

What scientists say In humans Studied in clinical trials for many effects (including aiding treatment of Helicobacter pylori), as an energiser it’s part of a traditional Chinese medicine formula (baoyuan dahuang), where liquorice extracts relieve fatigue in patients with kidney disease. In controlled trials it is more effective than HRT in reducing hot flushes in menopausal women. Was successful in a case study for chronic fatigue syndrome.

In the lab Liquorice inhibits fatigue and enhances memory in lab models, as well as protects against oxidative stress and inflammation. Neuroprotective in cultured cells and in models of brain injury (such as restricted blood flow).

Reduces oxidative stress in the hippocampus (a key memory area in the brain). Also active as an antidepressant and in generating new nerve cells (neurogenesis).

Key chemicals Major bioactive ingredients are triterpene glycosides (saponins) like glycyrrhizin acid which also account for its sweet flavour - 50 times sweeter than sugar. Also contains flavonoids such as liquiritin, responsible for the root’s yellow colour, as well as sterols, coumarins and an essential oil containing antioxidant and antibacterial thymol and neuroprotective carvacrol.

How to take it (Note precautions on high and long-term dose below).

The Superwoman Mask I never understood what failing at something meant until I become a mother. I had excelled in my studies and career – in fact I had exceeded everyone’s expectations, my own included. Life felt great, it was exciting and fulfilling. The next step in my life journey was to start a family and in my mind, motherhood was going to be magical, joyful and blissful

You should never put yourself in a position where you are lying to yourself and those around you, so that you can be accepted by them.

Be courageous to express how you are feeling and you will be pleasantly surprised to see a) how many people are feeling the same and, b) the support and help you will get from those around you.

My eldest child cried for the first 4 months of his life for 12-14 hours no-stop. No matter what I tried, and I tried a lot, I couldn’t ease his pain.

After a decade of helping people, some even make miraculous recoveries, I couldn’t help my own son. I remember feeling like a failure, a massive fraud. I didn’t want to let anyone know how I was feeling, so I hid it. How could I be such an expert in my field, yet such a failure in my personal life?

What would people think? Feeling like a fraud and a failure made me feel weak and worthless, and left me constantly questioning my abilities as a mother.

4. Accepting your vulnerability is not you being weak

Joining the Mother-Child classes just made me feel worse as all I saw was these perfect mothers with their perfect babies. It made the critical voice in my head shout even louder at me. I didn’t want the Moms know that I saw myself as a failure, so I would do what I now call ‘Putting on the Superwoman Mask’. I would hide all my insecurities, fears and feelings of failure behind this mask of confidence, perfection, and happiness. I always made sure the mask was perfectly in place. This worked well for months, then one day, the mask just didn’t fit properly. All those feelings and thoughts exploded loudly in my head making me feel extremely insecure. I felt I couldn’t hide the truth anymore, that I was lying to them and betraying their trust. One day, whilst watching the kids play, as I was sipping my coffee, I found my courage and spoke up. I told the Moms how I looked up to them, how I admired them for being perfect Moms. I envied how they had everything together and how easily it was all coming to them, when I felt like I was this monumental failure.

5. Learn your limits

I was met with silence and stillness, which made my inner critical voice scream even louder at me. Then slowly each Mom there told me they were feeling exact the same way about themselves. They too were putting this Superwoman Mask on every day. I was completely stunned as I listened to the Moms. I asked them why, if we were all feeling the same as I, why had no one said anything earlier? The reason for the silence – they felt that the rest of the group wouldn’t accept them if they knew they were a ‘fake’.

I learnt some valuable lessons that day. Lessons, that 14 years down the line, I find that I’m still teaching woman who are struggling to find their work-life balance in this modern-day world. These lessons are1. Be honest with yourself

We all have something that makes us feel vulnerable. What makes one person feel strong makes another feel vulnerable, but the reality is that vulnerability exists in each of us. It makes us human. It makes us feel things, challenges us and makes us changes. When we are honest with what makes us vulnerable, we can connect to our true strength and we don’t need to put on a mask to make us feel strong. By accepting our vulnerability, we can channel that energy to create change, growth, joy and a sense of belonging in all aspects of our lives.

Society is constantly telling us that we are not beautiful enough, young enough, thin enough, intelligent enough… The message is that we are not enough. Our mind then tells us we need to do more, be more.

Naturally we take on more things, juggle more plates and hide the parts of ourselves that don’t fit into other people’s ideals so we can fit the “superhuman—woman-with-super--multi-tasking-power” box. We hide parts of ourselves and lie to ourselves, we tell ourselves we are OK and that we can manage it all, when in truth, we have burnt ourselves out and are so far from who we are authentically meant to be that all that is left is an empty shell-like version of ourselves.

Knowing your limits means:a. Saying No; because you can recognise that you already have too much on your plate. b. Stop feeling guilty that you are not meeting others’ needs and not be accepted by them. c. Stop trying to match what you feel other people expect from you. d. Learn to ask for help. Everyone needs a little help now and again.

It’s not a sign of weakness. Life’s a circle; there will be times you will be able to help someone, then there will be times you will need the help.

When we take off our “Superwoman mask”, we connect to our authentic courageous self, our imperfectly perfect self and our vulnerably strong self. Be woman, Be you, Be proud!

Make time to check in with yourself daily and notice your feelings about yourself. You don’t have to broadcast it to the world, but by accepting them you are moving one step closer to finding your inner balance and inner acceptance.

2. Nurture and support your tribe Woman have a natural tendency to nurture and be empathetic. Create tribes where we all feel safe to understand and accept each other just as we are. Our tribe is our safe-zone; we should never feel that we are not good enough and that we are not going to be supported by our tribe.

3. Be courageous Stop living in fear of what other people may think. If someone thinks less of you because they know your truth, then they were never part of your tribe.

An Inconceivable Truth It’s a problem we don’t want to discuss. Taboo almost. Best begin with statistics.

Modern man first showed up on earth 200,000 years ago and by the year 1850 had been so fruitful there were 1 billion people on the planet. It took us 200,000 years to put the first 1 billion on earth. The next billion took only 200 years. Now we add 1 billion people to the planet every 12. Currently we sit at 7.5 billion and to give that some context if you were to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to every single person born today you’d be singing for 6.5 weeks.

I would like to talk about overpopulation.

Ironically we have come to a disturbing point in human history where our birth rates are literally killing us. As a women of child bearing age who has made the conscious decision to not replicate, I have come to realize I’m also quite alone in my instincts. Also I am dumbfounded.Shocked that my peers aren’t also disturbed by overpopulation and its well documented connection with ecological collapse.

“I want you to act like your house is on fire, cos it is.” Greta Thunberg The one thing that drives reproduction in humans as well as other species is survival. But what happens when that drive is no longer serving us, yet remains in our biology or DNA, especially in women? It’s very difficult to override intellectually – but not impossible. At some point the population will have to stop growing, the question is by what means?

“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have 4 years left to live.” Albert Einstein Journalist Kianna Goodwin considers that “the current generation must sacrifice their reproductive freedom to prevent future ones from suffering great decline caused by overpopulation.” She states reproductive policies should be implemented and we should be encouraged not to add other human beings to the world at this point in time. Yes, this has ethical considerations and you can argue about your personal rights all day long, but we won’t have any rights to protect if we carry on this trajectory. Too much is at stake to be polite.

Hard to comprehend from a place of space, comfort, resources and social systems to keep us ordered and safe. But a report recently produced by The Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration warns us that with the current attitude

of business of usual over the next 30 years “planetary and human systems are reaching a ‘point of no return,’ in which the prospect of a largely uninhabitable Earth leads to the breakdown of nations and the international order.”Much like the truck load of plastic dumped into the ocean off Singapore every minute… just because we can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

“If you really think the environment is less important than the economy try holding your breath as you count money.”- Dr Guy McPherson I believe one of fastest and most efficient ways to stabilize the world’s population is to empower girls and women to choose consciously whether they actually truly do desire motherhood. How could you curate a meaningful existence that doesn’t make having a baby some kind of default button for purpose? How else might you contribute to the human race? What else could you create that would add value? There are so many ways to give birth.....

Besides what about loving the ones that are already here?

“There are women who are born to be mothers, women who are born to be aunties and women who should not be allowed within 10 feet of a child.” Elizabeth Gilbert Perhaps even the government could grant benefits for those who elect to become childfree as incentives towards the reduction in carbon footprint.

Researchers at Lund University in Sweden found having children is the most destructive thing as person can do for the environment. To put that in context having a baby would save 58.6 CO2 emissions as opposed to going vegan which would save 0.8. In a speech to the Houses of Parliament in April climate activist Greta Thunberg stated around the year 2030, we will be in a position where we set off an irreversible chain reaction beyond human control that will most likely lead to the end of civilization as we know it. That is, unless in that time, permanent and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society have taken place, including the reduction of CO2 emissions by at least 50%. Turns out there is actually nothing little about the ‘pitter patter’ of tiny feet.

The truth is we are facing something much bigger than us as individuals. We are consuming more than the earth can provide and with a capitalist system that has always prioritized growth we now know the cost. Deforestation, mass species destruction, lack of natural resources, acidification of the oceans, erosion of fertile top soil, toxic air pollution are just some of the trends escalating us towards the sixth mass extinction. Surely it’s then inconceivableto continue to reproduce more human life at the rate we are in light of this information?

War disaster averted hedgerows to the rescue Recently I was asked by a group over in Cumbria to give a talk and lead a walk around their village about wild food and wild medicine plants that were used during the war in rural communities. I’ve been foraging for wild food for over 35 years and during the survival skills courses that I teach, an important element is knowing which wild plants have medicinal properties you can use in an emergency - some of which are potentially life-saving.

However, wanting to stick to the brief rather than go off on my own survival skills trip, I did some in-depth research to find out exactly what went on during the war.

Alongside family tales told me by my grandfather about putting alcoholsoaked peas out for the pigeons and grabbing them when they were drunk and couldn’t fly away, I have a wonderful book from the Second World War called “They Can’t Ration These”. This gives a great insight into what people were collecting and eating from the wild. With some exceptions such as rook pie, squirrel tail soup and roast sparrows much of what they gathered to eat is familiar to the modern wild food forager or hunter. It was when I started to explore what happened with medicine production that I uncovered a fascinating war time story: the war was fought on many fronts but this was one I hadn’t realised existed.

When war broke out with Germany it was soon apparent that we were in a very vulnerable position; Germany was a major supplier of our pharmaceuticals and also soon controlled other countries that supplied us with the raw materials for our own pharmaceuticals industry. At the outbreak of war something like 90% of all our medicines were made by processing plant material rather than by synthesis in a factory laboratory.

We had long relied on the continent where the plants we needed seemed to grow well and were easily and quickly dried in the hot continental summer sunshine. But they weren’t coming in any more and a serious national crisis was clearly visible on the horizon. An answer had to be found and sharpish!

The Vegetable Drugs Committee was set up at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, consisting of expert botanists and pharmacists. The committee found that a number of the imported drugs were derived from plants that were also native to or could be grown in Britain. They drew up a list of plants that should be collected along with guides to help people gather them. Soon a very organised system had been created with 70 County Herb Committees nationally overseeing collection in their areas. On a local level the Women’s Institutes and Women’s Voluntary Service played key roles in organising collections often by children in school, or girl guide and boy scout troops. Nationwide in 1942 1,000 tons of dried plants were collected.

Roots, leaves, flowers and seeds were collected varying with the plant and then they were dried – to start with in a bit of a haphazard way. If the plants weren’t dried properly much of the valuable chemicals were lost and so eventually there were 250 specially built drying centres nationwide which acted as collection and drying centres for the fresh plants. Once dried they were put in sacks ready for collection by one of the pharmaceutical companies. These companies then processed the raw materials, extracting the desired chemicals and manufacturing the drugs the country so desperately needed.

Collectors were paid by weight for what they collected. It was some of the plant species they collected that really surprised me. The Vegetable Drugs Committee drew up two lists of plants to be collected; Group 1 were essential plants and Group 2 were less important. There were only 9 plants in the original essentials list and although some of them are not surprising, others are. The list included foxglove leaves and seeds for the treatment of heart disease and deadly nightshade (Belladonna) leaves as a sedative and for the treatment of spasms. No surprises there – both are still used in modern medicine, but also on the essential list appeared dandelion roots for a laxative, broom tops as a diuretic, elder flowers against colds and flu and to produce sweating, valerian roots as a sedative and two that I teach my survival skills learners – sphagnum moss as a wound dressing (both antiseptic and absorptive) and male fern against tape worms. The Group 2 list is full of many familiar hedgerow, meadow and woodland plants with a

very wide range of uses for every day ailments; ailments for which you are likely to have remedies in your medicine cupboard at home – antiseptics, tonics, fever reducers and the like. There were 20 plants in this group.

In all it was a fascinating revelation for me. I had heard, like most folk, the tales of school children getting time off school to go out and gather rose hips in the autumn to make rose hip syrup rich in vitamin C and getting 3d / lb for them, but medicinal herb collection was a massive nationwide war effort that was completely new to me. The hedgerows and meadows had helped save a nation. And do you know what we did with those same hedgerows and meadows after the war? There’s gratitude for you!!!

Following on the heels of the Pitman Painters, a top quality Art Trail is being staged in Prudhoe from 13 – 20th July. Art and business are uniting creatively for the first time in the town to showcase Prudhoe’s vibrant Front Street. The Art Trail is aiming to build upon the successes of Prudhoe Fair, Christmas Lights and Art Week.

Talks, Walks and Workshops Original paintings, prints, textiles, glass, wood and ceramics will be displayed superbly in shops all along Front Street.

All artworks will be for sale and artists will be hosting talks, walks, workshops and demonstrations for art lovers to enjoy.

Businesses from shops and restaurants, including Waterworld and Prudhoe Library will be showing 20 + artists’ best work.

Fantastic Response

Prudhoe Community Partnership is spearheading this first Art Trail in partnership with watercolour artist Paul Stangroom, who has a fine art gallery at 45 Front Street. The paintings featured here are by Prudhoe artist, Claudia Quayle, and by Matthew Ellwood.

‘The response from the artists and from local businesses has been fantastic, and some superb work will be shown,’ George Hepburn, Partnership Chair, explains. ‘We are hoping that this Art Trail will both put Prudhoe on the UK’s artistic map and also benefit local businesses.’

Sky Blue Summers

An Interview with Paul Stangroom

Summer skies in the Tyne Valley remind me of the distinctive sky-blue paint that I discovered in many of the abandoned Northumbrian cottages that I’ve painted, such as ‘Blue Porch’, left. This cottage was in remote Dirt Pot near Allenheads, and the vibrant blue cladding and weathered wood drew me to paint it.

Friend and poet Noel Connor’s poem ‘Small World’ creates imaginary lives around ‘Blue Porch’ in my book ‘In the Pause of Passing’: Here you learned to stand filling the window, a snug fit, your pug nose pressed against the glass and me still cradling you in the crook of my fingers under your outstretched arms.

Your fingertips found balance in these walls, tiny feet learned to plant themselves.

But I taught you distance from the start, pointing out the snow-lined crags, each hard won field, the land that you would one day walk away from, the window you outgrew.

SPETCHELLS CONSERVATION INTEREST GROUP We need help to protect this beautiful and unique chalk grassland which is situated in the Tyne Riverside Country Park at Low Prudhoe.

Contained within this habitat are 14 species of butterflies and many unusual solitary bee populations.

Unfortunately the area has become threatened by an invasion of Cotoneaster shrubs which are shading the grassland and threatening to overwhelm native plants. More volunteers are needed to remove the invaders!

Moroccan lamb with aubergine and peppers A little harissa paste brings so much North African warmth to this mouth-watering medley of lamb, vegetables and chickpeas. l

½ Syn per serving

INGREDIENTS l Low-calorie cooking spray l 4 large or 8 small lean lamb leg steaks, visible fat removed, cut into thin strips l 2 large aubergines, cut into finger-thick strips l 3 peppers (any colours), deseeded and sliced

METHOD 1. Spray a wide, non-stick frying pan with lowcalorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. Add the lamb and stir-fry for 5 minutes or until lightly browned.

2. Add the aubergines and peppers and stir-fry for 6-8 minutes or until softened. Stir in the harissa paste and stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes.

3. Add the chickpeas and 200ml boiling water, season lightly and bring to the boil. Reduce 400g can chickpeas, drained the heat to low and cook for 8-10 minutes and rinsed or until most of the liquid has gone, stirring often. Scatter with coriander and divide Chopped fresh coriander, evenly between bowls to serve. to serve

Is anyone out there?

There has long been interest in the question whether we are alone in the universe or whether there is life, intelligent or not, anywhere other than on our planet. The Starship Enterprise’s expeditions “to boldly go” and find other species and ET’s visit to Earth are among many contemporary media examples, but there are earlier well-known novels by H G Wells and Jules Verne, and ideas about extra-terrestrial life have been discussed for many centuries, stretching back at least to the time of Greek philosophers hundreds of years BC

pursuits, especially in psychology and in neuroscience, investigating the relationship between mind and brain. It is temptingly simple in these areas, as elsewhere in science, to move from an observed connection to an assumption of explanation and to use words like “only” and “nothing but”. We’ve previously looked at issues and concerns raised by Artificial Intelligence (AI), and these include the same question of the nature of true humanity. Announcing a recent award of £150million to Oxford University for research that will include exploring the ethics of AI, the donor Stephen Schwarzman said it was “important for people to remember what being human is”.

The modern scientific Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) began about 60 years ago and is largely based on looking for evidence of life on other planets and for possible attempts at communication by alien beings.

It is costly and laborious, with no certainty of ever achieving any positive results, and has generated much more interest from the general public than from those who are called on to fund it. Not all SETI interest is sciencebased, of course; one famous physicist said that reports of UFOs are more a result of human non-intelligence than non-human intelligence!

Organic carbon-based life has rather strict requirements for its environment, especially regarding the atmosphere and temperature range of liquid water, and a planet capable of supporting life has to orbit its sun in a so-called “habitable zone” (or Goldilocks zone – “just right”). Until quite recently little was known about planets – even whether they existed – beyond our own solar system, but it is now reckoned, from increasingly sensitive scientific observations, that planets are actually rather abundant in our galaxy (and presumably in others), and growing numbers are being detected that could, in principle, fulfil the necessary conditions for life. Some physicists and astronomers think, on this basis, that there are probably many, many potential places in the universe that could harbour life, so it’s likely to be out there somewhere.

The trouble with this argument is that the probability of finding life elsewhere, in purely statistical terms, depends on two important factors multiplied together: the number of possible life-bearing planets, and the probability of life existing and developing on any one planet. The first of these may be huge, but the second, according to our understanding of the appearance and history of life on earth, is extremely tiny. Because of this, in contrast to the optimistic physicists, the general view of biologists is that extra-terrestrial life is unlikely. The result of multiplying a huge number by a tiny one, both of them very vague, is quite unknown. So the SETI people just keep on looking, and the film-makers continue to exercise their fantasy and imagination about “life, but not as we know it”, unrestricted by the problem of the vast distances involved and the consequent hugely long times required for conventional travel and even for communication.

Part of the Christian answer to the question comes from the Biblical description “made in the image of God”. This has many applications; here they include characteristics of rationality, intelligence, creativity, morality, relationship, and responsibility. Many of the problems we face today come from a failure to respect and achieve these characteristics, falling short of true humanity, marring the image of God. Would we treat extraterrestrial forms of life, whatever they may be, as badly as we do other life already known to us including other members of our own species? Sadly, experience suggests we would.

A 1989 Calvin and Hobbes cartoon said “Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the Universe is that none of it has tried to contact us”. What is intelligence anyway? The Bible prizes another God-given quality more highly: wisdom. We could do with more of it in our crazy world!

What if we do ever find intelligent life elsewhere? It raises questions that are not only scientific, but also sociological, political, moral and religious.

It is interesting that, according to surveys, the majority of people with no religious faith think that it would cause a crisis for world religions, while the vast majority of believers see no threat. We would all, undoubtedly, suffer a severe culture shock!
