I always feel a tad guilty banging on about the next season when this one is not due out yet. Bit like a back to school advert when the holidays haven’t even started. Annoying!

However this summer has been a bit of a wash out and I hope the early autumn can produce a bit more sunshine.

Sunshine makes me happy - pure and simple. I think it sends me hidden codes of happiness in wave form. Just good vibes.

Having just had 2 weeks in Greece recently it was a shock to arrive back home the Geordie monsoon season - Just depressing - I need the sun so here’s hoping for some September rays!

With a new season come some new writers to the magazine.

Benshaw Butterflies

slightly darker female; a small skipper fed on a marsh thistle. It wasn’t all butterflies, a golden ringed dragonfly rested after a bout of hunting and a large and wasp like hoverfly perched on a damp river stone.

Our walk took us up stream where the valley broadens and the little burn meanders through tall grassland. This is the domain of two other of the site’s butterflies. Small heaths are, unsurprisingly, a smaller but brighter cousin of the large heaths we had seen earlier. They are less fussy and thus much more widespread than large heaths and can be seen from hill to shore. The ringlet is a much darker butterfly, almost black when newly hatched, a more chocolate brown later. They have a distinct white border around their wings and ring patterns on them too – hence the name. This was possibly the most common butterfly of the day, we simply lost count.

At last a first sighting of another site specialist, a little late in its season so these were mostly older adults. Small pearl-bordered fritillaries have a rather cumbersome name but they are small dainty butterflies with a mottled orange and brown pattern to their wings. They like this open valley and, it turns out, an area on the far side of the site tucked beneath a bilberry covered bank.

As we set out across the moorland it threatened rain; a sharp shower came with dark looming clouds above us. We squelched over bog which months before had been crisp and parched but after a summer drenching was restored once more. The rain cleared but the cloud persisted. From below our feet a butterfly flicked into the air to drop and disappear some distance ahead. We followed searching in vain for the insect. It flicked up again and we fixed its landing spot. Creeping carefully forward while attempting to cross the uneven ground wasn’t easy but we were finally rewarded with a fleeting glimpse before it launched into the air once more: a large heath.

The site was Benshaw Moor near Elsdon and the large heath butterfly one of our upland specialists. It flies even on cloudy days when the temperature is much lower than most butterflies require. It’s just as well really as the upland bogs of Northumberland are hardly renowned for their hot sunny days. Benshaw Moor is Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s latest nature reserve acquisition and a brief glimpse of this butterfly last year had drawn us back for a better look. Over the course of the morning, as the weather got slowly better, we would spot nearly 40 more large heaths on the relatively small bog areas of the site.

We stopped for lunch by the small waterfall on site, a sheltered hollow where the limestone reaches the surface. The plants are different here, more specialists of lime richness. The sun came out and more butterflies took flight. A vibrant and freshly emerged common blue pursued a

Our other butterflies of the day were a handful of green-veined whites, probably our most widespread butterfly and a close relative of small and large whites which tend to be collectively known as cabbage whites after their propensity to lay eggs on garden cabbages. We also spotted one meadow brown a common and lazy-looking flier that flaps over grasslands and sometimes into gardens.

A couple of weeks later and the large heaths and small pearl-bordered fritillaries had gone for another year. Now like much of the rest of the area and indeed the country the painted ladies were out in force. This amazing migratory species makes its way here over a number of broods from North Africa. For many years it was not clear what happened when our winter arrived as they do not hibernate here. It now seems that those butterflies will return back to Africa, the longest butterfly migration in the world.

Most of our local butterflies will be gone by October but all will start again next spring for a new season. Their success will depend on the weather but also our wild spaces and the continuing health of the plants that provide food for both caterpillars and butterflies.

Bringing balance through Reflexology.

My first introduction to reflexology was through watching my parents have their reflexology treatments. Being too young to be left at home, I was brought along to appointments and whilst sitting quietly in the corner I was able to observe the techniques applied as well as see first-hand how expertly the reflexologist could detect changes in their health and diet. It was evident how beneficial the treatments were to my family’s health and I thought, “If this treatment is helping them feel better, what will it do for me?” Spending many a night massaging, to the best of my abilities, my own feet and observing the shifts in my body I noticed that; 1) I always felt better, particularly if I had been feeling poorly or run down.

2) My general sense of wellbeing improved after each session.

3) I felt more relaxed and always had the best night’s sleep following a reflexology treatment.

4) I seemed to recover quicker form illnesses than those around me.

5) I was able to regulate my emotions and didn’t seem to suffer from the erratic outbursts my teenage peers did. This was the “game changing moment” for me, noticing how emotionally calm I felt after each treatment and how accumulative these effects where.

It was then that my passion and fascination with reflexology was born.

In the 23 years of practicing therapeutic reflexology, my passion, fascination and respect for the therapy has never waned. Every pair of feet I have worked on, will have its own story to tell. Regardless whether the presenting conditions are the same, the story that unfolds is unique to the individual. Where you see a foot, I see a map of the body. Every line, every change in colour, every change in texture all tell me a story about your emotional and physical health, about your food choices and your lifestyle. During a treatment your feet are constantly “talking” to me through my fingertips. As I work through the feet and peel away the layers of stress, I see the map changing, hear the story changing and see how the healing is taking place as the body’s ability to balance is enhanced.

What is reflexology and how does it work?

Modern reflexology is based on an ancient form of therapy. There is evidence of some form of foot and hand therapy being practised in China as long ago as 2330 B.C. and at the same time in Egypt, as depicted in the tomb of Ankmahor. The North American tribes of Indians are known to have practised a form of foot therapy for hundreds of years. Its only in the last 60 years that reflexology has gain popularity, as well as recognition, for its beneficial value in the modern western world.

Once the functioning of the organ has been brought into balance, you can not unbalance it by continuing the treatment. It is common to experience a healing reaction as the body finds its way back to balance.

A healing reaction is the body eliminating toxins, poisons and waste which are trapped in the body and are obstructing flow of blood to organs and vessels.

A typical foot reflexology treatment lasts 45-50 minutes and it is generally recommended that a course of 4-6 weekly treatments is considered, however the frequency of treatments is up to you, and may vary depending on your state of health and long-term objectives.

It is always important to discuss your full medical history with your reflexologist as they will then be able to assess the correct treatment plan for you. Reflexology is completely safe for all, from babies to elderly, and can be used as a complementary treatment for all conditions and illnesses.

The three main benefits of reflexology are 1 - Relieve stress and tension- Stress is responsible for 75% of

illness and disease and affects peoples physical, emotional and mental health in various ways. Stress acts as a tourniquet on the body, constricting blood flow to organs and nervous system as well as activating the release of stress hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline. This then triggers various emotional response within the person. It’s important to remember that the persons emotional states normally mirror what’s happening internally regardless of whether person can regulate their emotions or not.

If you send the car back and it fails a tyre inspection the cost of tyres increases even further as the dealer won’t offer the same discounts that you can get from a local tyre centre.

Let’s look at an example: A Nissan Quashqi with 245/45 R19 tyres on a three-year lease covering 10,000 miles per year. With that milage you are potentially looking at 2-3 sets of tyres. But even if you do less mileage and only need one set, there are real savings to be made.

Lease companies impose specific stipulations on the lease, which include using manufacturer parts and dealer servicing, which cost more than going to a local garage. One of the main requirements is that the car goes back with tyres with a good amount of tread and of the same ‘quality’ of tyres the car came with. As lease cars are new, they come with ‘Premium Branded’ tyres fitted these can be expensive to replace.

The big tyre companies go to car manufacturers to have their tyre brand fitted to cars while in production. The tyre producer knows that the eventual owner will likely stick with that brand, as it is what came on the car.

Some car manufacturers even have ‘tyre systems’ in place. They brand them in ways to get people to buy specific tyres for their car. Of course, these tyres cost much more than even a standard premium tyre.

So how can you save on your tyres? Other tyre producers make tyres that are as good or even better in terms of grip, economy, and noise.

When you get your new lease car or within the first six months, consider swapping out your tyres. If you replace the tyres with more cost-effective rubber, you’re not wearing out the original tyres. So, when it’s time to return the car you can put the original tyres back on for a small fee. This can save you hundreds of pounds every time you need to replace the tyres. How I met my other half…..

Recently I shared a piece of creative writing with a trusted friend who works in the Arts sector. The poem was spoken from the point of view of a women about to be executed, a powerful statement of righteousness, power and grace under fire. The feedback of this person meant a lot to me as she knows the price we ‘sweaty creatives’ pay upon sharing our work – vulnerability. She ignored it. After a few days I pressed her for feedback, upon which she replied, she had decided not to listen to my voice recording or read my transcript as it was ‘too morbid.’

Tonight Mathew…. I want to talk about Shadow Work.

I too had been caught out in this arena. Last summer I was reunited with a dear friend, this man is many things to me, storyteller, wisdom keeper, mentor and elder. He is my Merlin. We hadn’t seen each other in such a long time so there was much to say! As I waxed lyrical about the horrors currently taking place on this planet, the elite, social injustice, those who are destitute, the powerless and the po…. he halted me mid-sentence and at point blank range said … “Fae, don’t lose your own shadow in the shadow of the world,” BANG. Turning point. In that moment I realised I had not only been aiming my attention on all that I saw wrong outside of myself but also on a global scale. I mean could it be any further away. In a flash I was prompted to survey my inner landscape, to see what I was hiding behind all that opinion, judgment and distaste about the darkness that existed in “other people” in “other places.”

Let’s bring in the scientists.

In Jungian Psychology, the “shadow,” “ID” or “shadow aspect/archetype” may refer to either an unconscious aspect of the personality which the conscious ego doesn’t not identify in itself, or the entirety of the unconscious i.e everything of which a person is not fully conscious. Dr Carl Jung explained the ‘shadow self’ as the part of our unconscious mind that contains everything we feel ashamed of thinking and feeling.

It’s every impulse, repressed idea, desire, fear or perversion that for one reason or another, we have shut down in order to keep us tame, likable and “civilized” in the eyes of others.

One thing is certain, we are all in it together.

In modern psychology there are 4 stages to shadow work; • Denial • Projection • Integration • Transmutation The real issues arise when we pair projection and the shadow self together. This is where the proverbial water gets muddied.

Psychotherapist Robert A. Johnson notes “we generally seek to punish that which reminds us most uncomfortable about the part of ourselves that we have not come to terms with, and we often ‘see’ these disowned qualities in the world around us.” We have ALL projected parts of our rejected self onto others. What bothers you in another is likely a disowned wounded hidden part of yourself.

testing/triggering event. It had come to my attention that my personal privacy had been criminally violated and compromised. Although shocking enough the situation was my reaction to it was even more so. Immediately I was aware that this person was simply acting out his shadow nature. I did not feel frightened, strangely curious. A year ago I would have gone straight into fear, at worst victim mode….instead I found myself able to simply note another man’s shadow at work. I must stipulate again I am not condoning criminal activity or being apathetic towards wrongdoing. I just found myself able to make peace and move on from the experience a lot sooner.

So before I go back to my brooding Nick Cave Spotify playlist I want to leave you with a word of warning if you are to take this mode of selfdiscovery/mastery. Religion and modern spirituality have a tendency to focus on the “love and light” aspects of growth. This over-emphasis on the fluffy, transcendental, and feel-good elements of spiritual progression can result in shallowness or phobia of whatever feels too real, earthy, or dark. So don’t be surprised if you find yourself out on your own, alone for quite the time as you undertake this type of soul work. Although, and reassuringly so I know one thing for certain. I don’t think one can ever get too lost in the dark if it’s truthfully your own shadow you are exploring.

When we can accept our darker parts it is much easier to accept/see/ forgive the shadow in others. As a result, other people’s behavior does not bother us quite so easily. FYI -This does not mean you have to put up with abusive, toxic dysfunctional people/situations. It just means you aren’t disturbed by them and lose loads of energy over it. At best place watertight boundaries and on a really good day perhaps a splash of compassion?

Wild mushroom bonanza

woodland species that is a favourite with most folk, including top chefs, for its nutty, mushroomy flavour and good texture. Again really simple and no real quantities here, just play around with the recipe to your taste.

Fry an onion in butter with a clove or two of chopped garlic Add the chopped or sliced cep and cook just as you would shop bought mushrooms Stir in single cream and season to taste Serve with pasta Use a good mushroom identification book and be sure of what you’ve picked. Mistakes can happen. Never pick button mushrooms (very young undeveloped ones) even if they are growing next to the mature specimens you are sure of; they can be difficult to identify and you could mistake them for a poisonous species.

If you can’t come on one of these get a copy of the Collins book, How to Identify Edible Mushrooms. This is an excellent guide which shows you the look alikes that you could mistake them for.

It’s wild mushroom season and the hot wet weather is turning out a bumper crop of tasty delicacies. It’s always an exciting time of year for the wild food forager; I think part of it is down to the fact you are never sure what you are going to find giving the discoveries extra zest.

With any foraging for wild food the most important thing is to stay safe.

My golden rule for everyone I teach is if you are 99.9% certain about what you have picked to eat then don’t eat it. There is still 0.1% of doubt in your mind and if you get it wrong it could be very unfortunate for you. In nearly 40 years of eating wild food I have stuck with this rule and so far I haven’t come a cropper.

There are plenty of wild plant foods that you can make a mistake with including some deadly ones but when it comes to wild mushrooms the perception of danger is definitely very much stronger in the British psyche.

My tip is to start with species of wild mushrooms that are very easy to identify and then build up your repertoire from there. Below I have selected three along with a suggestion of how to cook them.

My first is giant puffball, Lycoperdon giganteum, which although, more of a summer grassland species, you can still find growing in early autumn. It is completely unmistakeable, looking like a big white football in the grass.

Unfortunately this can be frustrating for the forager because you often find them after someone has used it as a football not knowing they were actually kicking away a very fine meal! Only eat if it is still white inside when you cut it open. Here’s my suggestion for cooking it: Cut about 500 gms of giant puffball into roughly half inch cubes (I usually peel the skin off before doing this) Fry in olive oil in a wok or large frying pan until golden brown Put a similar quantity (500ms) cooked macaroni into an oven proof dish and mix in the puff ball Pour a cheese sauce over this and mix it in.

Sprinkle the top with grated cheese and put in the oven for 30 mins on 180 Centigrade Serve with crusty garlic bread Next a quick easy soup using shaggy inkcap, Coprinus comatus, another grassland species that is usually very common even in towns. Gather them while white before they start to discolour.

Fry an onion in butter Scrape the outer scales off the mushroom if they are dirty and then chop it up and add it to the cooked onion. Cook gently until they go soft.

Add a pint or so of water and a chicken or vegetable stock cube and simmer for 10 minutes.

(Sorry there are no quantities but I tend to do this by eye just chucking stuff in till it looks right. Play around with it to your taste) Finally penny bun or cep, Boletus edulis, known to the Italians as porcini and sold dried at ridiculous prices in supermarkets. It is a frequently found

Summer skies in the Tyne Valley remind me of the distinctive sky-blue paint that I discovered in many of the abandoned Northumbrian cottages that I’ve painted, such as ‘Blue Porch’, left. This cottage was in remote Dirt Pot near Allenheads, and the vibrant blue cladding and weathered wood drew me to paint it.

Friend and poet Noel Connor’s poem ‘Small World’ creates imaginary lives around ‘Blue Porch’ in my book ‘In the Pause of Passing’: Here you learned to stand filling the window, a snug fit, your pug nose pressed against the glass and me still cradling you in the crook of my fingers under your outstretched arms.

Your fingertips found balance in these walls, tiny feet learned to plant themselves.

But I taught you distance from the start, pointing out the snow-lined crags, each hard won field, the land that you would one day walk away from, the window you outgrew.

Windows 7 operating system Hello everyone. My name is Jenny Stewart and for the last 10 years, I have run JennySys Computing Services, which is a company that looks after all of your IT needs: from small businesses to home users. I have been in the IT sector for well over 30 years - back to the good old days of the floppy disk!

In this edition of the Tynedale Express, I would like to bring your attention to the position of the Windows 7 operating system.

Microsoft brought out Windows 7 in around October 2009 – so nearly 10 years ago. It is/was a much loved operating system and a huge improvement on the previous Windows version which was Windows Vista. Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 on January 14th 2020, so if you are currently running Windows 7 or know of someone who is, then this article is for you.

What does it mean when Microsoft will no longer support this version?

Basically, Microsoft will no longer be providing updates to the operating system which means that vulnerabilities that may exist within the software, will continue to be around and could cause you problems. Also, there will be no technical support available.

What options do you have when support ends?

• You could update your laptop/pc to Windows 10 at a cost of around £109. This is certainly the cheapest route for you; however, the hardware in your device may struggle or not actually work as Windows 10 may not have all the necessary drivers. This route is also likely to cause the most problems unless you go for a clean install and unless you are confident in doing this, you will have to pay for this to be done. Also, you may need to consider what disk space you have as when Windows 7 first came out,

hard disk sizes were relatively small in comparison to what you can now get as standard.

• You could continue to use Windows 7, but you run the risk of bugs/ security holes causing you problems. You’ll not be able to install the latest version of Office (365 or 2019). And if you are used to using the free anti-virus software MS Security Essentials, you will find this will stop working once support for Windows 7 has ended and you will need to think of installing an alternative.

• You could buy a new laptop/pc. This will come with Windows 10 and cost around £500 depending on what you need the machine to do.

What is Microsoft doing about future versions of Windows?

Microsoft will keep the same name but will add build numbers eg the latest one is 1903 which came out in May/June and is currently being rolled out.

Microsoft stopped these big updates being automatically installed whether you liked it or not as they at long last recognised that this caused problems for some hardware. It now gives you 18 months in which to install it, and then it will do it automatically.

What you need to remember is to make sure that you keep all of your drivers up to date. Most good manufacturers of IT equipment will have a program that runs in the background and will notify you when you need to do an update. Don’t ignore the recommended updates otherwise there’s a chance that the next big update from Microsoft will break your machine.

Also, if you had a Windows 7 machine and you took up the offer of the free installation of Windows 10, chances are you will have a very small disk and you may run into trouble when Microsoft tries to install an update.

Personally speaking, I would replace your old machine as soon as you can.

I’ll also make sure you are not pressurised into buying software that you don’t need which is what often happens when you go into the big computer companies.

SPETCHELLS CONSERVATION INTEREST GROUP We need help to protect this beautiful and unique chalk grassland which is situated in the Tyne Riverside Country Park at Low Prudhoe.

Contained within this habitat are 14 species of butterflies and many unusual solitary bee populations.

Unfortunately the area has become threatened by an invasion of Cotoneaster shrubs which are shading the grassland and threatening to overwhelm native plants. More volunteers are needed to remove the

invaders!

The environment’s for everyone If you live in today’s world, whatever your age, race, sex or beliefs, the environment affects you, and you affect it, whether you like it or not.

children and also they would be less able to do something about it themselves. There’s no doubt, however, that it is increasingly hitting the news, even pushing Brexit out of the headlines. This summer has brought yet more weather extremes across the world and unusual features with some records broken for both temperatures and rainfall. It has been reported, and these are definite facts rather than opinions, that the 10 hottest years in the UK since records began have all been since 2000. We’ve seen the impact in strain on resources and infrastructure, including a major national power failure and a near disaster for a Peak District reservoir dam. It’s recently been suggested that climate change is increasing the incidence of aircraft flight turbulence – ironic, given that air travel is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Some would say that nature is fighting back in self-defence.

This year’s Holiday Club for children, run jointly by the Prudhoe and Stocksfield churches in the first week of the school holidays, had the title “Transformers”. Alongside the Bible-based teaching, craft construction and junk modelling activities, games and food provided for over 100 5–11 year-olds together with involvement of some older children as helper Apprentices and a first-time toddler group and parent café, we included topical environmental themes.

For 10 minutes each morning we acted out the production of a children’s TV programme with themes including waste and pollution, energy and other resources, water, food, and biodiversity in the context of caring for the good world God has made and entrusted to us. We talked about reducing, reusing and recycling waste, especially plastics. Genuine scientific demonstrations, some prepared beforehand, included a simple filter for dirty water, how paper is recycled, and powering a torch with a battery made from a pile of pennies, bits of cooking foil and cardboard with a dose of salt and vinegar. And can you explain why an orange floats in water - until you peel it?

Despite continuing scepticism by those who refuse to accept the overwhelming scientific evidence because of self-interest, there is essentially no doubt that major climate change is a reality and it is largely caused by human activity. Scaremongering isn’t going to change people’s habits enough, it seems, so we have to hope that technological advances, such as further reductions in the relative cost of green energy and the development of more environmental travel, will be rapid and effective, and we need to have greater investment in these and public demand for them.

We’re approaching the traditional season for harvest festivals. Although many people no longer appreciate our dependence on the earth’s land resources and their produce, it is still real; indeed, with current environmental concerns, the relevance and importance should be clearer. Many churches are combining the traditional harvest themes with ecological issues. For some years international Christian aid agencies such as TearFund have provided useful up-to-date material for use in harvest services, and increasingly now the EcoChurch initiative (ecochurch.arocha.org.uk) is attracting attention and involvement. My own church, Stocksfield Baptist, for example, has recently joined the EcoChurch movement and our all-age harvest service on the first Sunday in October will follow this theme. I expect there will be a number of others in the area too. EcoChurch includes commitments to reduce waste, use green energy (and less of it; not all churches are old and cold!), and follow the “Reduce, reuse, recycle” principles. What we seek to teach our children we need to adopt for ourselves.

The environment’s for everyone... and it’s everyone’s responsibility.

These topics were easily understood and responded to by the children, who have a strong basic concept of fairness and could see that selfish and greedy western lifestyles are harming the environment and the poorest people in the world are affected the most. Some will have thought about how they might change their own habits or get involved in environmental projects when they get back to school, or support relevant campaigns.

Of course, for consistency, the Holiday Club organisers had to look carefully at practical arrangements for the week: out went single-use convenience plastics and a “reduce, reuse, recycle” policy was followed. The adults, too, were seriously challenged to be Transformers in our own lifestyles.

One environmental topic we mentioned only briefly at the Holiday Club was climate change, because we thought it too complex for the youngest

The Haltwhistle Autumn Walking Festival will take this year place from Saturday 28th September to Sunday 6th October. On each of the nine days, there will be at least two guided walks to choose from, one of 10 miles or more, and one slightly shorter and easier. In addition, there are four special interest walks, including the chance to look closely at the fungi fostered by this extreme summer, getting up close to wind turbines, looking at farming methods in the North Pennines, and even trying our hand at fiction, all while enjoying a walk in this beautiful area. All walks are led by an experienced guide with back-ups, and on each one you will find out something new and interesting about the area. On our special interest walks we are accompanied by an expert, with much to tell about their subject.

This is our 33rd Festival, and once again we offer a range of walks set in the different parts of our region. Walks take us variously

through the Wilds of Wanney, along the South Tyne, around the Allen Valleys, along Hadrian’s Wall and into County Durham.

This year, we are including a challenge for fitter walkers, our “Big Round”, a 16 mile walk starting and ending in Alston. Later in the Festival we will complete A Reivers’ Way, walking over three days from Deadwater Fell on the Scottish Border to Haltwhistle. We will be walking across a range of terrains and seeing different types of landscape.
