Bewick Mobility has always been a family run business. It started from humble beginnings back in 1981 and was based in Prudhoe. AD MURUM SINGERS Ad Murum Singers are a community choir based in Heddon-on-the-Wall.

The choir enjoys a wide range of music, and constantly explores new ways to make singing fresh, fulfilling and especially fun. Singing is a social activity, and has been found to stimulate the brain, relieve stress, and improve cardio-vascular function!

We are always keen to welcome new members of all ages and abilities - No auditions! With the money raised from our concerts, the choir is able to send donations to a variety of charities, both local and national. The choir meets in Heddon Methodist Church at 7-30pm on Tuesday evenings (September to June). A letter from Albert Einstein to his daughter: The Universal Force of Love

Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) is perhaps best known for being a theoretical physicist and for receiving the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics “for his services to Theoretical Physics”. A lesser known fact about arguably one of the most intelligent men of modern times is that he was also a prolific sender of personal notes and letters upon his own personalised letterhead.

In the late 1980s, Einstein’s daughter Lieserl donated 1,400 letters written by Einstein to the Hebrew University. The text of one of them is reproduced below for you. Having been sent by Einstein to his daughter, this letter shows a very different side to Einstein’s personality and his outlook on the world.

“When I proposed the theory of relativity, very few understood me, and what I will reveal now to transmit to mankind will also collide with the misunderstanding and prejudice in the world.

I ask you to guard the letters as long as necessary, years, decades, until society is advanced enough to accept what I will explain below.

There is an extremely powerful force that, so far, science has not found a formal explanation to. It is a force that includes and governs all others, and is even behind any phenomenon operating in the universe and has not yet been identified by us. This universal force is LOVE. When scientists looked for a unified theory of the universe they forgot the most powerful unseen force. Love is Light, that enlightens those who give and receive it. Love is gravity, because it makes some people feel attracted to others. Love is power, because it multiplies the best we have, and allows humanity not to be extinguished in their blind selfishness. Love unfolds and reveals. For love we live and die. Love is God and God is Love.

This force explains everything and gives meaning to life. This is the variable that we have ignored for too long, maybe because we are afraid of love because it is the only energy in the universe that man has not learned to drive at will.

To give visibility to love, I made a simple substitution in my most famous equation. If instead of E = mc2, we accept that the energy to heal the world can be obtained through love multiplied by the speed of light squared, we arrive at the conclusion that love is the most powerful force there is, because it has no limits.

After the failure of humanity in the use and control of the other forces of the universe that have turned against us, it is urgent that we nourish ourselves with another kind of energy…

If we want our species to survive, if we are to find meaning in life, if we want to save the world and every sentient being that inhabits it, love is the one and only answer.

Perhaps we are not yet ready to make a bomb of love, a device powerful enough to entirely destroy the hate, selfishness and greed that devastate the planet.

However, each individual carries within them a small but powerful generator of love whose energy is waiting to be released.

When we learn to give and receive this universal energy, dear Lieserl, we will have affirmed that love conquers all, is able to transcend everything and anything, because love is the quintessence of life.

I deeply regret not having been able to express what is in my heart, which has quietly beaten for you all my life. Maybe it’s too late to apologize, but as time is relative, I need to tell you that I love you and thanks to you I have reached the ultimate answer! “.

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas 4.

2. Place the beef, onions, carrots and flour in a baking dish, season and toss to mix well.

3. Pour in the boiling hot stock then add the Worcestershire sauce, baked beans and bay leaves. Stir to mix well and arrange the sliced potatoes on top of the meat mixture.

4. Cover with foil then place in the oven for 2½-3 hours or until the potatoes are cooked and tender.

5. Remove the foil, then turn the oven up to brown the potatoes, or finish under the grill for 5-8 minutes until brown.

Thanks – Maria Hello…My name is Sarah Fae and I am the new features writer at Tyne Valley Express. I thought I would choose a simple topic to start with- sex.

Besides sex is easy, its intimacy that is hard.

Sexuality is still taboo in our society. I always find this ironic as we literally come from the very act of sex. A primal instinct, unknown source of energy, a mysterious force in the universe. As a culture it seems it is more palatable to watch a murder on TV than to witness two people making love.

I believe our sexual energy has been squandered, shamed and scared into submission. Don’t let todays “hook up” Tinder culture fool you, sex is never insignificant. When we ignore the sacred aspects of our sexuality and our partners there is a loss. In that void we then seek and find the answers all too conveniently placed elsewhere.

It seems in 2018 we have become numb, dumb, somewhat disembodied and disconnected from this primal life force energy.

We are the creators of life itself and also of the energies that we generate through ourselves and each other. So,if we want to create healthier sexual relations, we will need an awarenessof how to get there.

There was a time when sex was sacred. It was a ritual demonstrating the highest expression of male and female union. The transformational power of sexual energy was harnessed and when consciously transmuted for the highest good,became pure love.

This knowledge, as a collective, is our power. True love is one of the only things left on this planet that cannot be bought or sold.These ancient secrets have been purposely suppressed by the powerful few, buried and hidden from the mainstream population. They have been manipulated into an industry that profits from our unconscious habitual use to fulfil our primal urges.

Why do you think porn is the most free, accessible media online? In the UK there were more visits to porn sites than to Netflix, Twitter and Amazon combined. Pornographers are literally sculpting our sexuality by creating content. It’s not necessarily nudity but novelty that stimulates. A man can access more “hot babes” in 15 mins than his ancestors could in a lifetime.

There’s an epidemic of depression and anxiety in the western world.

In part because a large portion of us are staring at our smartphone, some accessing this damaging online content These scenes on our screens often depict unrealistic, one sided, often violent views of human sexual expression.Pornography use is also directly related to negative perceptions, attitudes and incidents of violence towards the opposite sex. It was found that 88% of scenes contain physical aggression of some form. Are those categories on porn sites really representative of how we authentically desire our sexual relations to be?

Did you know whether you’re taking drugs or viewing pornography the addiction process is the same?The frontal lobe is the area of the brain responsible for making decisions and logically thinking through situations and scenarios. It is also the part most affected by addiction.

When accessing porn you can overexpose the brain with pleasure chemicals such as dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and epinephrine.

In order to accommodate the extra chemicals your brain rewires itself and builds up a tolerance and a dependency to them. You go from ‘wanting’ the pleasure chemicals to ‘needing’ them. As the brain adjusts to the higher levels of dopamine it becomes desensitized to what it has already seen. So a person must seek porn more frequently and he/she must view more extreme types of porn to obtain the same physical sensations.

Ok so it’s addictive, but it isn’t going to kill you, right? Porn kills relationships. Research shows regular users have decreased desire whilst becoming increasingly critical of theirpartners appearance.

Itis also highly correlated with infidelity and the devaluation of monogamy, marriage and child rearing. More than 50% of people involved in online interactive cybersex eventually lost interest in sex with a loved one. There is also a significant relationship linking

depression, anxiety and social isolation to regular users.

So what’s the alternative?

Tantra.

Let’s start by saying what it is not. Tantric sex has long been ridiculed with the idea of marathon sex sessions in poses that are worthy of a gold medal gymnast. Unattainable to the masses and exclusive only to the privileged and the famous (Sting and Trudy step forward). Tantra is actually about presence. Presence by being immersed in the moment and not a mental projection or idea of what that should or could be.

Before we share our sexual energy with others we must learn to connect with ourselves first. We can’t seek it through another, the responsibility of love lies within. Besides unless you fall in love with your true self first, how can you even begin to recognize that feeling in another? “Beware when a shirtless man offers you a shirt,” is my favorite African Proverb. Another more modern piece of advice is “never sleep with someone you wouldn’t want to be.”

So where does this leave us? What are the tools to help us reframe and reclaim our sexual selves? Let’s keep it really simple and just become aware of our use of online content and the intent we have when we connect sexually with ourselves and others. We can then open a dialogue for more truthful encounters with our loved ones regarding intimacy. Rather than trying to throw reigns around this unknown source of energy and control it lets instead harness its creative power and sail into the mysterious. Be playful. Be curious. Be safe.

I realise as I write this we might not be ready for the message, but boy, do we need it so badly!

Taking the guesswork out of safe return to play

Hollya celebration older than Christmas Think of holly with its glossy leaves and bright red berries and you will probably think of Christmas. Holly has been linked with this festive season for quite a while. If you had gone into a pre-Victorian market and asked for a bit of Christmas tree it would be holly that you would get; this was our Christmas tree before the Victorian fashion for putting a whole spruce tree up in the house and decorating it with baubles and delights. However, holly’s links with Christmas go back much further than this.

Christmas occurs at the time of year when our pagan ancestors celebrated the winter solstice and probably not by any accident. The early Christian missionaries were not averse to adopting pagan festivals and changing them to a Christian theme. It helped to persuade the pagan peoples that perhaps this wasn’t such a different religion after all and it had a few useful perks like life after death. Holly was already part of the pagan Celtic celebration of the winter solstice. The evergreen leaves of holly possibly gave hope that barren dead winter would give way again to the new growth and life of spring. The Celts believed that the year was presided over by two nature gods: the Holly King ruled from the summer solstice to the winter solstice and was then defeated by the Oak King on the winter solstice; he then ruled till mid-summer before giving way in his turn to the Holly King. This is the origin of the Green Man who, incidentally, appears carved out of stone in a number of Medieval churches! The original pagan Yule log was holly and was dragged to the fire to be burned at the winter solstice.

Holly also played a part in another pagan festival, this time Roman. They had a feast called Saturnalia which happened in mid-December. It was a time of feasting involving their god Saturn who would carry a staff made of holly which played a prominent part in the festivities. With holly being an important part of both pagan Celtic and Roman mid-winter rituals and feasting it was an obvious target for the persuasive Christian missionaries.

Putting new Christian symbolism into them, the prickly leaves symbolised Christ’s crown of thorns, the red berries the blood he shed to save us and the round wreath of evergreen, undying holly symbolised an eternal cycle put now in more Christian terms: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again.

The word “holly” seems very close to us to the word “holy”, and that’s because it is! The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “holegn” which means “holy”. It was the holy tree and its holiness is celebrated in one of our most popular Christmas carols:

One thing you wouldn’t have done would have been to chop a whole tree down, no matter how small. This would bring misfortune. A few branches were all that were needed. This gave a place for good spirits to dwell that would protect you and your family from the less benign ones out there in the dark of a wild, windy winter night. Planting a tree outside your house had the extra benefit of protecting your home from lightening. In addition, if you didn’t want your daughter to become a witch you could hang a sprig of holly on her bed!

The very beauty of the tree unfortunately hides a more sinister side.

The berries are poisonous and have been known to cause poisoning at Christmas time. Dogs seem to be more susceptible than humans; the berries contain theobromine, an alkaloid that is related to caffeine and found in chocolate. As we know, chocolate is poisonous to dogs but not to humans. However, humans are not immune; if a child or dog eats one or two berries it is unlikely to do much harm but apparently twenty berries are potentially fatal. It pays to put that festive garland well out of the reach of tiny hands or hungry doggy mouths.

When you hang up your holly this year you are doing something very ancient that has been done by your ancestors for many thousands of years and links you to the cycles of the year and its changing patterns; a faint memory of pagan beliefs that welcomed the winter solstice, the lengthening of the days and the renewal of life and new growth that would eventually come as a result.

Peoples let go of old beliefs with great reluctance and many of our superstitions are rooted in pre-Christian pagan beliefs. Early Christian priests forbade their flock to bring holly into the house before Christmas as this was when the pagan Saturnalians did it: they had to wait until a week or so later. This developed into a superstition that it was unlucky to bring holly in before Christmas day and it had to be taken down again by Twelfth Night.

After a long career in the public and community sectors Peter Woods, a Hexham resident launched Hexhamtv two years ago to allow local people to tell their stories and to highlight local issues. You can say so much with video and viewers can really understand a person’s point of view when they see them for themselves talking about local issues that concern them. Until Hexham tv came along there was no digital channel for people to get their message out to their local communities. Stories covered so far include local events and award ceremony’s, author talks, music events and social issues like the proposed closure of local rural schools, the availability of local domestic violence and mental health services, the temporary closure of Hexham Hospital Urgent Care Centre overnight, the provision of fast broadband to local communities in the Allen Valley and the services offered by West Northumberland Food Bank. Kielder’s Winter Wildlife Wonderland.

Kielder in winter can be a spectacular place, and you sometimes feel like you’ve stepped into Narnia once the snow has landed and the boughs are white and heavy. Although the air is clear and the views are simply gorgeous, the winter can be very hard on the wildlife that makes its home in the forest.

Water voles become a lot less active in the winter months, and spend most of their time safely hidden away in their burrows. The territoriality of the breeding season is long forgotten, and several voles can be found cohabiting and keeping warm. Their diet changes from grasses, reeds and sedges, to roots, tree bark and fruits along with supplies that they have stashed in their burrows to see them through the hard times.

Red squirrels famously don’t hibernate in winter, but instead raid the caches of food that they have created when there was an abundance on natural resources. They have gorged themselves in times of plenty, and typically eat twice as much food in spring (approx. 80g per day) than they do in winter (approx. 35g), relying on their fat reserves and hidden stores of food to get them through the lean times. Their appearance changes, having moulted their summer coat and grown in those characteristic ear tufts. Their winter coat is much thicker and covers more of the soles of their feet. Sadly, around three quarters of red squirrels will die during their first winter, although if they do survive, the average lifespan is 5 years. They are more likely to make it through if there is a good crop of seeds on trees in autumn.

Some species use different strategies to ride out the cold, harsh winter months. Adders, a fairly common species at Kielder, hibernate in a cool, dry place like a crevice or hole in the ground. Hibernation begins in October and they emerge again in the spring.

Of course, not all of our famous residents stay in Kielder for the winter… the ospreys have a different strategy again, and migrate from mid-August, heading for the warmer climes of southern Iberia and West Africa. Who can blame them?

The snow and frost can provide different ways to find out about wildlife. A few years ago, whilst out on a walk in Haltwhistle, I came across some strange tracks in the snow that looked like a very small toboggan (with intermittent paw prints) going in and out of the water and up and down hills. I was completely perplexed and took a few photos to compare to my animal tracks book when I got back to the house. A little bit of research showed that these tracks were left by an otter sliding through the snow and into the water (and out again!).

I urge you to have a quick look on youtube to see them doing it for yourself – how I would dearly love to have seen it in person! Another unusual track I found was left behind by a heron on the frozen South Tyne, which had had a very clumsy landing or take off – the messy wing prints it left behind revealing its shame to all the dog walkers passing by until the ice melted.

Lavender brain balm.

The most scientifically-proven plant for the mind available to us today?

Well-known in the worlds of gardening, baking and essential oils, lavenderis now taking the scientific world by storm - having amassed enough science to show how it can calm, help sleep, boost mood and memory, as well as lower pain, heal skin and be a protective agent. But it’s the science of its ability to lower anxiety that is key - it’s now one of the few alternatives to chemical drugs for generalised anxiety disorder and appears to have passed scientific rigour for efficacy. It carries none of the side-effects and dependency of conventional drugs.

History and folklore. Recorded through ancient and modern history, Tutankhamun’s tomb contained traces of still-fragrant lavender. Lavender was used to scent bed linens, clothing and hung above doors to protect against evil spirits. This fits with its reputation for preventing disease - it’s a strong antimicrobial. Greek physician to the Roman army, Dioscorides wrote that lavender taken internally relieves indigestion, sore throats and headache, and externally cleans wounds. The Romans named the plant after its use in their bathing rituals – realising that lavender is not only relaxing but also antiseptic. Its use in the World Wars to sterilise medical equipment and to heal wounds led to the practice of aromatherapy - French medical doctor (army physician and surgeon) realised the enormous potential of essential oils in treating wounds during World War II.As well as all the uses backed by clinical trials, medical herbalists today use lavender for migraines, earaches, neuralgia and other bodily benefits.

What scientists say.

In humans.

The growing body of scientific study of lavender in clinical trials mainly uses the essential oil - either in capsule form, inhaled or applied topically.

CALMING In controlled trials lavender promotes calm, lowers anxiety and

related restlessness in several settings and the essential oil capsules are a welltolerated comparable alternative to conventional drugs for anxiety. Lavender (alongside the south seas calming plant kava kava) has now been named as one the few alternative medicines for generalized anxiety disorder that has passed the rigors of scientific assessment for efficacy.

MOOD LIFTING Lavender in a controlled study was found comparable to the SSRI paroxetine for depression and when given with imipramine it improved the benefits of imipramine for depression An alternative to conventional drugs for anxiety and mild depression? Trialsof lavender essential oil to calm are numerous and a

standardized capsulated essential oil called Silexan has recently been tested in controlled trials led by the Medical University of Vienna. Lavender was found comparable to the benzodiazepine lorazepam (in a multi-centre placebocontrolled trial in 450 people) and to the antidepressant (SSRI) paroxetine (in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 539 adults). The safety of silexan has been demonstrated and, as well as inducing calm, it also improves sleep and depression and is without side-effects, drug interactions or dependency.

SLEEP INDUCING Lavender capsules improved sleep, inhalation improved sleep in coronary intensive care and in cancer patients in controlled trials, as well as improving self-rated sleep quality and energy in students with sleep problems and reducing restless leg syndrome in pilot studies.

MEMORY IMPROVING In pilot trials lavender inhalation reduced working memory when inhaled in normal circumstances, but after stress conditions it improved working memory. PAIN RELIEVING The essential oil relieved pain in headache, carpel tunnel, dysmenorrhoea, lower back pain, arthritis and during and post surgery. INSECTICIDE Treats fleas and lice in humans (and other animals).

Key ingredients

The essential oil itself contains more than forty ingredients - the main anxietyrelieving ones being linalool and linalyl acetate. These chemicals are also present in other relaxing aromatic plants and even in citrus fruits. Lavender oil also contains the terpenes cineole and camphor (also in common sage and rosemary) shown to be memory-boosting in lab studies.

consult a registered medical herbalist, inform your health care provider if you are taking medication or have any medical condition and do not stop taking prescribed medication. Be sure of the identity of your plant and take only at the recommended dose.

Using it. Fresh or dried for teas and tinctures (5g dried/25ml 40% alcohol,

1 tsp 3x daily). Use tinctures and tablets as instructed and also (though not necessarily at a medicinal dose) in bathing and body oils (2ml/100ml) and cooking. Seek professional supervision for internal medicinal use of essential oils

Safety. One of the safest plants, and even the essential oil has very low toxicity when used at the correct dose externally applied undiluted in minute quantities, though can occasionally cause skin irritation. Lavender may exacerbate sedative or anti-convulsant drugs and because of oestrogenic properties, it is not recommended regularly in young males. Do not over-use the essential oil. There are hazards associated with taking the attractive species French lavender (L. stoechas) internally, with reports of toxicity in children. But L. angustifolia is so widely accepted as safe that is approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) as a plant medicine to relieve stress and anxiety.

Recently the journal Frontiers in Ageing Neuroscience stated that essential oils should be “developed as multi-potent agents against neurological disorders with better efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness”. Certainly, looking at the emerging research, there is a strong case for plants as preventative medicines - we need to start using plants more to protect all our bodily systems. And we need to start looking at plants logically, from a scientific perspective – as this research on lavender tells us.

Science scares: fact or fiction?

As midnight on 31 December 1999 approached, many people dreaded a worldwide disaster because of the so-called ‘Millennium Bug’. In the preceding months some companies did a roaring trade in preventative measures, and supermarkets ran out of food and emergency supplies.

It turned out to be the biggest non-event for years – virtually no computer systems crashed because of the date change – but it shows how a limited understanding of science and technology issues can cause fear and how this can be exploited.

Similar concerns were expressed when the Large Hadron Collider, the world’s biggest machine underground below Geneva, was prepared for major experiments looking for evidence of the Higgs Boson, also known as the ‘God Particle’ about 10 years ago. The panic theories included the creation of a black hole that would swallow up the earth or even the whole universe, despite the lack of anything remotely approaching enough energy for this.

Perhaps the biggest scares relate to medicine. This isn’t surprising when you remember the tragedy of thalidomide leading to major birth defects in the late 1950s, and the frequent, and too often contradictory, advice given on diet and health; these can make it difficult for ordinary people to distinguish real concerns such as obesity and smoking from more debatable points such as the impact of small-scale alcohol consumption. One of the most notorious cases was the 1998 claim that the triple MMR vaccine could cause autism, which led to a marked drop in vaccinations and subsequent dangerous outbreaks of disease, especially measles, in the following years. Careful investigation showed that Dr Andrew Wakefield, responsible for the autism claim, based his conclusions on faulty research, probably deliberately, and all other studies have completely discredited them.

More recently a scare story went round, reporting that Gateshead Council’s new street lighting was run on 5G technology, with a risk of causing cancer in the local population. In reality there was no such plan.

5G technology is indeed on its way as a faster and more efficient means of communication for mobile phones and other devices, and every advance in this field brings its cancer scares.

All wireless digital communication relies on some form of electromagnetic radiation, which consists of waves of oscillating electric and magnetic fields that transmit energy. The very small section of the electromagnetic spectrum (the full range of possible radiation) that we can see is, of course, visible light in its various colours. What distinguish different colours, and different parts of the spectrum in general, are different wavelengths and different frequencies of oscillation of the waves; frequency goes up as wavelength goes down across the spectrum. The energy of radiation, which determines what effect it can have on substances including our bodies, depends directly on the frequency. Going up in frequency and energy from visible light we have ultraviolet (= beyond violet), X-rays and gamma rays (a form of radioactivity). These have enough energy to remove electrons from atoms and so change materials chemically, including modifying DNA in our biological cells; such high-energy radiation can cause skin and other cancers.

Lower in energy than visible light we have infrared (= below red, which we experience directly as heat from the sun), microwaves, and a wide range of radio waves. These cannot cause significant chemical reactions and so are incapable of inducing cancer. Existing and planned future communications are limited to certain regions of radio and microwave frequencies. Many studies have been made of their possible impact on human and animal bodies, and there is no evidence whatsoever of anything other than a very tiny heating effect with some of the higher frequencies, and even these are not significant. Apart from frequency/ energy the other important property of electromagnetic radiation is intensity or power (measured in watts: an electric kettle uses 3000 watts, a low-energy light bulb around 10 watts). The power of a typical mobile phone signal is less than 1 watt, a small fraction of the heat output of a single human body, and lower than any light bulb. Any notion that mobile phone usage can fry or scramble the brain can be completely dismissed. In fact, advances in technology mean increasing efficiency, and each new generation of devices actually becomes safer in this respect, not more risky.
