EDITOR Here is our spring offering!

Just been out with the dog and the sun is now starting to get some warmth in it. I am going to get started on the garden early this year. I really want to produce some good food organically grown. I’m a bit of a novice and my interest wavered last year – probably too much stress and doing other things – like this magazine. Anyway I’m back on track and this year I’m going to kick the gardens teeth in to shape – Nothing nicer then peas out of a pod or a juicy strawberry – not like the tasteless punnits on the supermarket shelves. I’m talking real tasty juice bombs! My compost bin has also been neglected – I’ve been ramming stuff in it for 3 years but never started to use it. Andrew Davenport points the way for me on page 28 and makes compost sound sexy stuff. Belinda is back too on pages 20 / 21 and talks about our toxic load – another reason to grow your own! Roger is spilling his tea whilst up Cuddy’s Crags – He has obviously been up a few times with his seasonal shots! The feral child, Kevin O’Hare is back too on page 50. He is working out his Storm Cocks from his Scribblyjacks? I can picture him as a child eating mud off a stick while carrying frog spawn in a jar! Enjoy!!!

Michael and the Tyne Valley Team.

Range cookers look fantastic in both contemporary and traditional kitchens. The ovens in a range cooker are typically around 20% bigger than an average 60cm built-in oven, and are often multi-functional, meaning they offer several different modes of cooking. Also, as most range cookers have two or more ovens there is plenty of space, so lots of dishes can cook at the same time-perfect for large family gatherings and entertaining. With so much choice available though, choosing the right range cooker that suits you can sometimes be a daunting prospect, which is why you should contact an expert like Walter Dix & Co. They can advise on size, style, colour and oven/hob options, and give honest opinions on which brands would work well for you and your kitchen space.

Founded in 1888, family-run business Walter Dix & Co became one of the first AGA dealers in 1931, covering Tyneside, Northumberland, Durham and North Yorkshire. In addition to AGA they stock a large collection of leading quality brand range cookers and have a magnificent showroom just off the A1 at Team Valley, Gateshead, where they are able to show-off the very best cookers on the market. Range cooker brands available include Lacanche, Viking, Ilve, Steel, Britannia, Mercury, Falcon and Rangemaster. Clients visiting the showroom can not only expect to see a huge range of products but are also sure to receive expert one-to-one advice. The team at Walter Dix & Co is friendly, knowledgeable and happy to talk you through your various options, allowing you to choose with confidence the right cooker for your home and budget.

I decided fifteen years ago that I would have a go at serious photography and, for a number of reasons, decided to restrict myself to what is often called Hadrian’s Wall Country. Asked the question ‘What is my favourite place within this area?’ there is no simple answer. Beauty in the landscape and the stories and secrets it hides can be seen and felt in many different ways. If I was really pushed, by a whisker it would be Cuddy’s Crags, looking east towards Housesteads Crags and Kennel and Sewingshields Crags beyond.

Photography – A Passion to Record What is it that makes this place so special? It appeals strongly to two totally separate and different parts of my personality – my appreciation of the beauty of the world around us and the technician passionate to record it in a way that captures a sense of long, largely forgotten times when the world was a more perilous and mysterious place. The Wall to the east of Cuddy’s Crags is a view that tells a large part of the story of Hadrian’s Wall. It demonstrates how the construction of the Wall used the natural features of the landscape to enhance its effectiveness by adding the additional height of the crags of the Whin Sill fault. The Wall was, at its most, a barrier between the ‘civilised’ world to the south and the uncertainty to the north – it was the northern limit of one of the world’s greatest ever Empires. As with all governments, at its least it was a means of controlling movement and collecting payment for the right to pass through.

The Natural, Northumbrian Landscape

The North East’s leading vehicle adaptation and barrier free living specialists

The view from Cuddy’s Crags is perfect for a great landscape picture, with the line of the Wall meandering over the crags from one side of the picture to the other and back again. The time of year I like best is from mid-autumn to mid-spring when the mists and frost are most likely to be found. It is when the sun is in the best positions to add that sense of mystery and timelessness and the bland greenness of summer is a distant memory. After my photography I often make a cup tea and simply enjoy the experience of being in such an amazing and historic location. I hope you enjoy your photography as winter finally makes way for spring.

Warmseal’s window wizard Simon is writing for us here at the Tyne Valley Express, with advice on helping to make your home safe and warm this winter.

Simon Says... Replacing Your Conservatory Roof

Conservatory Roof Repairs There are a number of common problems associated with traditional polycarbonate conservatory roofs, which can lead to the conservatory falling into disuse. Homeowners often find that their conservatories are too hot in summer and too cold in winter, and that their conservatory roof is very noisy when it rains especially if it’s glazed with polycarbonate. Conservatory roofs are the most exposed part of the structure, which means that if they are not made from quality materials, they can suffer damage. Repairing your conservatory roof by replacing it with a brand new roof is an excellent way to transform your conservatory, making it into an extra room that you can use all year round, whatever the weather. Nowadays the homeowner has the option to replace their existing conservatory roof with a high specification glass roof or solid, insulated tiled ‘warm roof’. Too Hot In Summer and Too Cold In Winter? The rate of temperature transfer through a material is measured in U values, the lower the number, the better the insulation properties. A typical polycarbonate roof will have a U value of 2.4, with a glass roof as low as 1.0 and a solid insulated roof down to around 0.18. Plastic polycarbonate roofs therefore absorb heat from the sun, often causing temperature levels to rise to unbearable levels during the day. Conversely they lose heat rapidly, which makes the conservatory cold at night and during the winter. A replacement glass roof will reduce both heat and glare, as modern glass is treated with a solar control coating, allowing it to reflect up to 78% of the sun’s infrared heat away and even to reduce UV radiation. The key aspect of a warm roof is its impressive thermal qualities, which can transform the conservatory into a comfortable ambient space, cool in the summer and warm throughout the winter.

Too Noisy When It Rains? Polycarbonate roofs offer no sound insulation, making them extremely noisy during rain. By contrast, a new glass or warm roof replacement can offer excellent sound reduction properties with a glass roof being 50% more effective at reducing external rain noise than a typical polycarbonate roof, with even greater soundproofing qualities provided by a warm roof. Not only do polycarbonate conservatory roofs attract a build up of dirt and grime, they are extremely difficult to clean, especially as they lack load-bearing access. Self-cleaning glass significantly reduces the need for manual cleaning on glass roofs, while solid roofs require only occasional power-washing to keep them looking good as new. Too Much Glare From The Sun? The pleasure of a warm sunny day can be spoiled be excess glare. Choosing a replacement roof can ensure that you can enjoy the sun in your conservatory without this problem. Modern glass roofs are treated with a solar control coating that reduces glare by as much as 68%. The bleaching effect of the sun is also reduced as the glass blocks 94% of the sun’s UV rays. A solid warm roof provides a dramatic new vaulted ceiling and can be combined with a choice of roof vent and lighting solutions so that the conservatory will feel like an extension of your home. You can use your freshly roofed conservatory for entertaining family and friends or as a tranquil environment from which to relax and look over your garden. Increasingly, homeowners are opting for a warm roof, as it gives them the opportunity to expand existing kitchen areas, dining room, living area or even playrooms. In Conclusion Whether you have a P-Shaped, Edwardian, Victoria, Lean-To or a Gable Conservatory, Warmseal can provide a number of conservatory roof replacement options to transform your conservatory, making it into an extra room that you can use all year round, whatever the weather.

Winlaton Community Library is run by volunteers to serve the local community. Anyone living in the area can join the library, and it’s free to borrow books. The library is open five days a week, and is always looking for new members or people to help out with activities and running the library. The more the library is used, the better its chances of remaining open long term. There are a number of regular activities running in the library. Every Friday at 10.00 is Rhymetime, for pre-school children, with songs and toys. There’s also a big selection of children’s books. On Mondays there is a sewing circle and a knitting group. During school holidays there are craft sessions for children aged 3 to 11. Anyone thinking about starting a new group, why not check with the library to see if they can help? Creating family wellness – reduce your toxic load! Most chronic degenerative diseases are down to poor diet and lifestyle habits. Reducing your chemical intake will make a significant contribution to creating a healthier body (and mind!) and here’s how.

Filter your tap water Whilst we are blessed to live in a country where the water is drinkable, it doesn’t mean it is free from contaminants, such as chlorine, fluoride and heavy metals. Chlorine is used in almost every municipal water treatment facility in the world. Whilst it kills many microorganisms in the water, it also reportedly damages human cells. (After all, chlorine was the happy by-product of a First World War nerve gas.) Balance this with the further discouraging news that chlorine in your tap water doesn’t guarantee that when the water comes out of your tap it is free of dangerous micro-organisms often present in the delivery system between the treatment plant and your home. Even minimal exposure to bugs like e-coli can cause symptoms such as headaches and diarrhoea. Fluoride was originally added to our tap water in the belief that it would help to reduce tooth decay; however there is little evidence that ingesting it has that effect. Fluoride in the body can actually have devastating health effects. Fluoride accumulates in the pineal gland which can wreak havoc with your melatonin production. This can disrupt your biological clock and even influence your cancer risk. Another area of great concern is your thyroid gland. As your fluoride load increases, fluoride displaces iodine on the thyroid receptor sites causing a decrease in thyroid hormone production. Not only can this contribute to hypothyroidism, but it also increases your risk of developing goitre. If you’re iodine deficient (and many people are, as our diet is deficient in iodine), the negative effects of fluoride ingestion can be magnified.

Change your household cleaning products The greatest risks in your home come from the chemicals in common household products. The fewer ingredients a product contains, the better. If you can’t pronounce it, you probably don’t want it anywhere near your family.

pregnancy than those with lower levels. (1)These chemicals have disrupted the endocrine systems of wildlife as well, causing testicular cancer, genital deformations, low sperm counts, and infertility in a number of species, including polar bears, deer, whales, and otters, just to name a few. Scientists believe phthalates are responsible for a similar pattern in humans including: impaired ovulatory cycles and polycystic ovary disease (PCOS), interference with sexual differentiation in utero, disturbed lactation, early or delayed puberty, enlarged prostate glands, numerous hormonal disruptions, breast cancer and uterine fibroids.

Avoid artificial air fresheners, dryer sheets, fabric softeners, or other synthetic fragrances. Look for products that are fragrance-free. One artificial fragrance can contain hundreds – even thousands – of potentially toxic chemicals. There is so much you can do to reduce your toxic load. Create family wellness by looking for products that are made by companies that are earth-friendly, animal-friendly, green, non-toxic, and/or 100% organic. This applies to everything from food/ food supplements and personal care products (free from SLS, parabens & phthalates) to paint, baby items, upholstery, and more.

Buy products that come in glass bottles or jars rather than plastic or cans, since chemicals can leach out of plastics and into the contents. Store your food and beverages in glass rather than plastic, and avoid using plastic wrap. Eat mostly raw, fresh foods. Processed, pre-packaged foods are a common source of chemicals such as BPA and phthalates.

China, in contrast, does not allow water fluoridation because it’s too toxic according to their studies. Instead, the waste product from their phosphate fertilizer industry is shipped to the western world, where it is added it to our water supply!

Go organic It’s not news that organic farming beats conventional practices when it comes to the health of the environment. A small study pilot experiment sought to address what kind of immediate difference eating organic food can make inside the body. One family of five participated in an experiment over 21 days, run by Swedish grocery chain, Coop, and the Swedish Environmental Research Institute. For the first week the family ate a conventional diet and urine samples were analysed daily: analysts found a number of insecticides, fungicides and plant growth regulators. The family went ‘organic’ over the following two weeks, eating an organic diet, and using organic soap and personal care items. The results from the urine samples were dramatic. The pesticide load dropped significantly, even during the first day, and by the end of 2 weeks there was very little evidence of pesticides and other compounds in their urine samples. A recent study from Newcastle University reveals that organic food is packed with more nutrients than conventionally farmed foods, with concentrations of antioxidants 18-69% higher in organic produce than their non organic counterparts. The choice of fish you eat is also very important. Rather than eating conventional or farm-raised fish, which are often heavily contaminated with PCBs and mercury, supplement with a high - quality purified fish oil, eat smaller fish or fish that is wild-caught and lab tested for purity. Wild caught Alaskan salmon is ideal.

20

Heavy metals (lead, copper, aluminium, cadmium & mercury) are some of the most toxic substances known to affect the human body. When ingested, these metals are difficult to remove. They reportedly weaken the immune system, damage your cells and compromise health. Most heavy metals come from rust and sediment build-up in the water pipes that bring the water from the water treatment plants as well as the pipes within your home. Lead in particular poses a significant health risk as it leaches into tap water from older water pipes. So, not only should you filter your tap water to remove some of the nasties, filtered water even tastes better. Many types of toothpaste contain fluoride too, so look at changing your toothpaste to one that is fluoride free. Avoid aluminium Aluminium absorbed or ingested can have an adverse effect on health and in particular the nervous system. Many studies have been done to demonstrate a link between aluminium exposure and impaired brain function. Aluminium can be found in cosmetics, deodorants, cookware, ‘tin foil’, and certain medications. Switch to organic, chemical free, aluminium free beauty products and deodorants for starters and get rid of all the old cookware. Reduce exposure to phthalates These are chemicals used as plasticisers in everything from plastic bottles and containers to vinyl flooring, detergents, hoses, raincoats, adhesives, air fresheners and toys. They are also found in soaps, shampoos, lotions, nail polish, and other personal care products. A new study also revealed that women with higher levels of phthalates in their urine were more likely to have miscarriages between 5 and 13 weeks of

Gardening Gems of Yesteryear

Welcome to Cummins Chiropody & Podiatry… …where we believe that maintaining your foot health is essential to your overall wellbeing. We are a professional and dedicated footcare team. This means we have the skills and experience to ensure that you receive first class treatment for your feet. Your feet…enhance the performance and comfort of your entire body. Most people don’t realise this, as feet tend to be taken for granted and consequently are often the most neglected part of the body. We are here to help look after your feet and offer you the very best in footcare.

It’s great to see the days getting longer now and the signs of spring well and truly here. Aconites and snowdrops have been and gone; crocuses and early daffs are now continuing to give us something to smile about too. But strange things have been happening in gardens everywhere due to the wet, mild winter. For example, in our garden the poor roses barely had a rest, flowering through November and December, with new buds bursting into growth at the end of January. Given the fairly exposed and elevated position of our northern garden, it’s mindboggling to think what must be going on in sheltered gardens in the south of England. Flowering plants like roses, that have been bred to perform, need all the sustenance they can get. Longer seasons of growth and flowering will place even more demand on the soil for nutrients. Of course you may choose to use proprietary fertilisers for the job but soils that are low in organic matter simply allow most of the nutrients, mainly potassium used for improved flower and fruit production, to leach away. Compost fed soils actually hold an electrical charge opposite to that of the nutrient, so they can attract and hold onto the nutrients. Active and healthy soils fed with compost continually provide for the plants that grow in them through the organisms that live therein. They do this by eating, digesting and excreting the decaying plant matter (as well as each other) to make humus, the most natural form of readily available food for plants. All you need to do is keep adding your home made compost, which can be applied as a mulch around the plant. Give things a boost by placing banana skins, which have a high potassium content, next to your hungry plants. As they decompose and breakdown, the potassium is slowly released. This works a treat.

Tips from Tougher Times

Knowledge and tips such as this can be gleaned from gardening magazines and books, or from the internet and TV of course. However, whatever you do, don’t overlook the old gardening books. They are a goldmine of information, often based upon years of hard work and experience. They were written in less prosperous times when we had to be more sustainable, and inherently organic, as individuals and as a nation. Instead of reaching for a product or chemical to ‘fix’ things, nature’s stock cupboard was the first port of call. Old wives’ tales may enter into it, but there is often some truth in what is said. Anything that can help in the aid of growing healthy plants without the use of chemicals is worth a try in my opinion, especially if it isn’t going to cost anything!

Heaps of Common Sense Compost

One particular book that helped me enormously was Maye E Bruce’s ‘Common Sense Compost Making’ first published in 1946. In her own witty manner, Miss Bruce tells the remarkable story of how she discovered a method to make compost in 4 weeks, using an entirely natural compost activator made from 5 common herbs plus honey. She called her method ‘Quick Return’ compost making (or ‘QR’ for short). Not only does she tell us how to make the compost but she relates to all aspects of how composting is the most fundamental aspect of gardening and essential for life on this planet. Thrown into this are many useful gems of info, such as the fact that nettles are really good for composting since they contain many nutrients including a high nitrogen content. This will provide a rich feed for bacteria and so create high temperatures in the compost heap – essential if you want to kill off weeds, weed seeds and pathogens. Another good tip is to add charcoal to the base of the heap. This acts as a filter, absorbing bad smells and sweetening the heap. Common valerian (valeriana officinalis) is one of the herbs Miss Bruce prescribes for her compost activator. She also explains how it can be used to make a natural stimulant for rooting cuttings. This plant has many medicinal uses including its calming and tranquilising effect, ability to induce sleep and is good for the relief of headaches. If you have cats they will absolutely love to roll around it and will be sent into a happy trance. It is also a very elegant plant for the garden and attracts many pollinators. What more could you ask of a plant? Ad extension Nature’s Helpers

At Gardener’s Cottage Plants we are primarily plantsmen and gardeners. We can offer sound ‘Companion Planting’ by Gertrude Frank is another of my favourite books. Ms advice on plants, planting and organic gardening to go with the varied range of cottage garden Frank describes a system of gardening that maximises yield through the use of perennials, herbs and wildflowers that are grown to withstand the Northumbrian climate. beneficial plants that interact naturally with the crops, the soil and its inhabitants. Tel 01434 672594 mob 07500 895052. Special crops, such as spinach and mustard, pave the way for the later crops by preparing the soil with extensive root systems to penetrate and allow air into the soil. This means that we don’t have to dig! Plants, such as mustard, can also release beneficial chemicals into the soil which repel insect pests. Nature’s ‘tools’ often come free, or at minimal cost such as a packet of seed, and can often save us lots of work and cost. Old gardening books are usually inexpensive and in my opinion are much better value for money than the ‘coffee table’ glossy mags and books that appeal to our visual hunger and tell us very little. A trip into Hexham usually gets me into trouble – the ‘magnetic’ attraction of the Oxfam second hand book shop is taking its toll on our already heaving book shelves which are crammed full of, as you probably guessed, classic gardening gems of yesteryear. Happy gardening!

Eat Yourself Well Eastern Influences Ayurvedic Eating

Ayurvedic eating is based around three body types and as we move towards spring, may help you to refresh your system following a long, northern winter. Knowing which body type you are (or, more often, which combination of two) can help you to improve your digestion and understand just how food affects you. Ayurvedic eating is one method of thinking about what works for you, alongside reflecting on your lifestyle and choices. Give your body time to adjust to ayurvedic principles – you may have fatigue or mood swings in the first week or two, as your body adjusts. (Always take advice from your GP if you have health issues or are changing your diet significantly.)

Vatas – All Elbows and Knees

The three basic body types are the Vata, Kapha and Pitta. Vatas are the most slender of the three, and can look all elbows and knees, with their prominent joints. Their skin and hair can be dry. Air and space rule these imaginative, energetic types and they learn and forget fast, leaving room in their brains for plenty of creative thinking. Vatas are advised to avoid dry, raw and crunchy food and fizzy drinks. Warm, cooked, soupy foodstuffs are best, also nuts, lentils, cooked vegetables (carrots, aubergines, spinach, sweet potato and courgettes). Spices such as ginger, anise, cinnamon, cloves, cumin and fennel will warm the Vata heart and improve digestion.

36

The Blue Bell

Pink Pittas

Pitta types have a medium rather than small frame and generally feel warm, while those Vatas are COLD. Pittas tend towards pink skin and can go grey prematurely. Pittas are governed by fire and water and are mercurial mentally – quick and bright. These intelligent, witty people can have forceful personalities. Pitta people are prone to be drawn to alcohol, coffee, acidic foods and coffee – all of which they should moderate. (Sorry, Pittas!) Cooling cucumber, kale, cauliflower, cabbage and lettuce are much better for the Pitta bod. Sweet fruits (grapes, mango, bananas, kiwi) and spices (coriander, turmeric, saffron and fennel) will rejuvenate and cool the Pitta person.

Kaphas – Salt of the Earth

The Kaphas are of the water and earth. They have the broadest of the three builds – with wide shoulders, thick hair and strong, athletic bodies. They can build great physical stamina (and/or fat). Rock solid, they are both loyal and reliable. Kaphas need to keep moving to keep their circulation strong and should keep fats and salt low. A light diet, full of leafy vegetables is best and massage can improve circulation and water retention. Ginger tea will sharpen taste buds and apples, pears and pomegranates keep things light. Kaphas are advised to eat white meat and seafood, rather than loading up on red meat.

Foodie Fiction

Ayurvedic eating features in many novels, including those of Marsha Mehran – ‘Pomegranate Soup’ and ‘Rosewater and Soda Bread.’ The novels weave around the lives of three Iranian sisters serving traditional Persian dishes in Ireland, and are packed full of food love and recipes – well worth reading if you are interested in exploring Eastern eating further.

Storm Cocks and Scribblyjacks No, I’m not referring to some abstract plumbing or design terminology, but to the quaint ‘olde’ country English names for some of our birds which are now, all too often, getting lost amidst our declining local dialects. These birds have sprung to mind this week as the weather has warmed a little and the first glimmers of spring are showing. The snowdrops have poked their heads above ground and are in full flower; crocuses are shooting up and the early birds are starting their pre-nuptials, singing lustily and hard from the tree tops. The storm cock, one of the first and earliest nesters, was out in full cry this week. They nest annually in the tall trees opposite my front door, so leaving the drive on the way to work, I paused to listen to the dulcet tones of the mistle thrush. It’s not quite as melodic as its cousin the song thrush - in fact, darn right out of tune - but it’s birdsong nonetheless, and a welcome change from the drone of traffic.

Almost Forgotten Names from a Feral Childhood

On the way to work I was mulling over the many names we had as kids for everything we saw and found. As a somewhat feral child, I spent hours outside the parental home rummaging through the fields and hedgerows, usually up to some act that was just bordering on the lawful or nowadays would be totally illegal. As we learnt by our mistakes and experience, first hand or as wisdom passed on by older peers, it was a life full of knowledge gained first hand and lessons quickly learnt. In a world before XBoxes and 24hr TV, our thirst for knowledge was endless. What enthralled me was the natural world beyond the garden gate. I just had to pick it up, sniff it, collect it, keep it and take it home, much to the frequent disgust and horror of my parents. Names we had, like the ‘storm cock’, were passed down in almost folklore and the birds were renowned for particular feats. The ‘storm cock’ was a favourite because he would not only sing, as his name implies, in a storm, but because he was fiercely protective of his nest. It was a brave school boy who scaled a tree in an attempt to find the mistle thrushes’ nest hidden in the fork.

The People’s Place Names

Place names we shared too - whinny hill, the hill with gorse on, and lappy island was obviously where lapwings were. Fox dene was the small wooded valley where we saw a fox once. People have been naming sites for years, resulting in the many place names the region is rich with. A few that spring to mind are obviously Otterburn, the stream otters frequent, Todhill, fox hill, and one of my favourites, Foulmart knowe roughly translated as a small hillock where polecats live. My favourite is Bewshaugh, near Kielder, translated as, low ground by the river where beaver built their dams.

Precious Clues to our Past

I hope that we don’t lose these names, words and phrases: they make our language so much more, well, colourful. So keep out the clarts and divint get hacky durty filthy black whilst on ya way back yarrm. Dialect is a wonderful thing, to be valued and treasured. Many of these ancient words give us tantalising clues to our past fauna and flora and also give hope to those of us who wish to see some reinstated. Whilst the daffs are poking their heeds above the grund, what else should ya keep a gander for?

The Migrants Return

Around the end of the month, depending on the weather, the first hardy migrants return: along our rivers, sand martins may be seen; the tell-tale call of the chiff chaff will be heard in the bushes and trees, and the dawn chorus will gradually increase. Birds will be more obviously searching out and making nests. Some wildfowl will be sitting on eggs by the end of the month, as will robins and other thrushes. Make sure you get out and about and enjoy whatever the great British weather has in store for us or pack up and go to the Algarve to catch the migrants en route.

Are you relaxed and sitting Comfortably?

We are specialists in comfort... Our small friendly team have over 70 years of experience to draw upon.

Spuggies and Stinkers

Many more names passed down in folklore. The ‘scribblyjack’ was named for the exquisite markings on what is the yellowhammers’ egg. ‘Dickie hedgie’ or ‘hedge spuggie’ were terms for the dunnock or hedge sparrow – ‘spuggie’ being a collective name for small brown birds. ‘Wind hover’ was a kestrel, a ‘skytie’ was a skylark, a ‘stinker ‘a starling, ‘whitearse’ the wheatear and a ‘babbler’ one of the tits, usually the great tit - and always one that brought a snigger to a small boy’s face.

Charlie the Fox

Kevin O’Hara Conservation Officer Northumberland Wildlife Trust

Most of these names come from a distant age and are derivatives from either old or Middle English, Germanic origin, like most of our dialects. We would name badgers ‘brock’ and Bill (one of my dogs is still called Brock), ‘fitch’ was someone’s ferret, ‘hedgepig’ a hedgehog – and a fox became ‘Charlie’ or ‘tod’. One of my favourite names is the ‘whinny bush’, the much maligned gorse bush. This in turn has many other things associated with it, the whin sill being one, as gorse is a common occurrence along this granite stone outcrop. Then there’s the ‘whin chat’, whose name derives from its singing post in the whinny bushes.

Can you help the Hextol Tans? Over the next few months, the popular vegetarian restaurant in St Mary’s Chare, Hexham – the Tans – is being completely refurbished and relaunched. The Tans is more than just a coffee shop and restaurant, though: it provides opportunities for people with poor mental health or learning disabilities to develop confidence, job experience and restaurant skills. After it closed last September, it was taken over by the Hextol Foundation – a local charity which has provided a range of work experience opportunities for people with these difficulties in the Tyne Valley since 2007. Once conservation consent is given for work that needs doing at the site, the charity will be completely renovating the kitchen and tastefully refreshing the restaurant itself. While waiting for that approval to come through, the Hextol team has been developing their new menu and practicing the dishes. “We plan to offer a fresh, home-cooked seasonal selection,” explained the new Hextol Tans Catering Manager Claire Smith, “with dishes like Pinto Bean Chilli and our Spicy Root and Lentil Casserole.” Claire also plans to offer an Afternoon Tea, with freshly cut finger sandwiches and homemade scones and cakes.

Moveable feasts

Even though the restaurant is currently closed, you can order already their buffet selections for business lunches, training days and events or for children’s parties. From their other kitchen in Gilesgate, Hexham, the Tans team make buffets

Helping the cause

Hextol thrives on the support it gets from community – from people buying its services – its buffets, its cakes or its decorating, gardening, packing or warehousing. But could you help in other ways? By working as a volunteer to help provide that vital support to those people in the Hextol team who need it? Or by sponsoring an hour or two of our skills training each month? Or by making a donation towards the costs of new furniture and equipment for the Tans? They have several volunteering opportunities which might suit you: and a long list of things they need to relaunch the Tans. If you can help, please call Chris on 01434 605253; or email chris.milner@hextol. org.uk. Thanks.

Any move can be daunting, but when it involves packing up thousands of DVDs you might be tempted to give in. Not if you’re Hexham’s Gojo brothers! Andrew and Steven Jackson saw the need for a move as an opportunity for their well loved DVD business to embed itself in the local community. “We’ve run a DVD and video hire business in Hexham for more than 30 years and have built up quite a collection of DVDs” says Andrew. “We also have fantastic customers and when the lease on our premises in Battle Hill came to an end we saw this as a moment when we could change direction, but keep a DVD presence in Hexham. We wanted to work with a community-focused business which also shared our approach to customer service and we’ve found a perfect match with Mike Coleman and Core Music.” GoJo@coremusic opened in Core Music’s Gilesgate premises at the end of December 2015 and for many it has been a seamless move. “Our customers are impressed that we’ve kept such a wide selection of DVDs and, of course, still have the latest releases too.” says Steven. “They have also commented on how much easier it is to park now that we’re opposite a car park.” Core Music will also continue to offer for sale a wide selection of local interest DVDs such as the popular ‘Sunday for Sammy’ and ‘Tales from Northumberland’ series as well as English, Scottish and Northumbrian folk music CDs. “We’re delighted to add this venture to our Core Music activities” confirms Mike Coleman who has been at the helm of Core Music CIC since the social enterprise opened over 7 years ago.

“GoJo@coremusic has now become a community asset because, as a not for profit organisation, we are able to put funds back into our community.” “We believe that access to music should be for everyone and it’s great to introduce new customers to the possibilities offered by Core Music.” he adds. “We’ve found that we share the same approach to our customers sharing our knowledge and experience to help people choose a product which is just right for them. We’re looking forward to developing many new ideas, offering volunteering opportunities whilst, of course, keeping up with all the latest DVDs. Over the next few months these will include the latest James Bond, Star Wars and a host of other popular movies.”

“Core Music CIC is a not-for-profit social enterprise. Every penny spent with us is used to improve access to music for all our community. TAN DAWSO

Man on a Mission

TIMBER, STEEL, STORAGE & RECLAMATION Kirkley Head Office: 01661 860 413

Hexham-born Richard Hunter represented England and Great Britain as a youth in the 110m hurdles, before turning his attention to the decathlon. His passion for athletics has continued throughout his life – both as a hobby and in his work. In 2013, he established Run Nation Events Limited, which offers a series of 10km, half marathon and marathon events across the UK each year. This May, Richard is introducing the first ever Tynedale half marathon to our region.

Building Supplies, Storage & Reclamation

Richard’s mission is to encourage people of all ages and abilities to enjoy running as a fun way to get fit and enjoy the great outdoors in local parks and countryside.

RECLAMATION

in Northumberland & the North East

The number of events he organises is increasing every year. In 2016 he will host 14 events in Northumberland, three in Durham, two in Cumbria, two in Scotland, one in Newcastle and one in London. The company’s portfolio of races ranges from small, rural events to large town centre races on closed roads. All Run Nation events are fully licensed by Run Britain and the company is affiliated with British Athletics. Every race is officially measured and organised under British Athletics Rules.

Here at Stan Dawson we have a huge range of reclamation to get your project started this Spring. Our Friendly knowledgeable staff are here to help!

ON YOUR MARKS!

Locally, Richard is the mastermind behind the highly successful Run Northumberland race series, which hosts events in some of the county’s most historic and stunning locations including Bamburgh Castle, Wallington Hall, Cragside, Kirkley Hall and Vindolanda, which is a new run for 2016 along the historic Roman Wall. Also new for 2016 is the Run Nation Festival of Running, which promises to be an action-packed weekend of Sport in Hexham, including athletics and running events for adults and children on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May.

l

TYNEDALE’S FIRST HALF MARATHON

l

The weekend will culminate with the first-ever Tynedale Half Marathon on the Sunday. The route will take in the scenic Tyne Green Country Park and run along the River Tyne to Warden and Fourstones then return along the banks of the Tyne to finish on the Green.

l

Richard maintains that running is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to get fit and feel good about yourself. “All you need is a decent pair of running shoes and off you go - although your first half marathon may take a while to build up to! I want to welcome people who may currently do one or two races a year and who don’t want to feel intimidated by the more serious runners which is one of the reasons Run Nation events take place in such lovely locations. “Our courses attract everyone from club runners and non-club runners to people who have never done a run before or want to move up from the weekly 5km Park Run. With each event, we try and make everyone feel a part of it, whatever their level. “The routes are designed so that people can take the courses at their own pace, and hopefully enjoy their surroundings at the same time. Exercising outside is exhilarating and you’re never too young or too old to take up running!” says Richard.

The friendly and professional team will visit you at a convenient time to give you a no obligation quote and on many occasions will carry out the job in the home. If the job is more complicated, they will take the item to the workshop and return it to you when it is completed.

This option saves you time and money and will help retain the authenticity of any classic car.

As well as repairs, Furniture Clinic also provide a cheaper and faster alternative when it comes to updating your home and car’s interior - they can reupholster and re-trim leather and fabric furniture or even carry out a complete colour change.

As industry experts, Furniture Clinic serve many large national business needs, such as hotel and restaurant chains. Their diverse and respected client base means that you can feel confident knowing Furniture Clinic is the right company for you.

Re-trimming is available for both classic and modern cars. As leather specialists, they can custom match panels and seats to blend in with the rest of the leather, rather than re-trimming the full interior.

From a simple clean to a full restoration, no job is too big or too small. To find out more about what we can do for your items, give us a call on 01207 282644.

In addition, French polishers are able to clean, repair and carry out full restoration to any wooden items.
