Kielder ospreys fly the nest!

Covering the whole of the Tyne Valley and Northumberland. l l l l l l The return of the ospreys to Kielder Water & Forest Park is a fantastic conservation success story and a great example of partnership working. This has been the ninth year that ospreys have nested at Kielder following the first successful nesting attempt by a pair in 2009. Since then, the osprey population has grown to four nesting pairs, with several other individuals seen frequenting the area during the season.

This year saw a landmark achievement for the Kielder ospreys, with the 50th chick fledging since the ospreys recolonised. Chicks from previous years have been seen at several locations in the UK this year, including the Lake District, Balgavies Loch, Geltsdale and Derwent Reservoir, which is great news for the further recovery of the osprey in the UK. I was fortunate to attend the ringing at nest 1A with Forestry Commission staff this year – when the chicks have two rings placed on their legs. This is carried out by a licensed practitioner with thorough training in the species. The first of these rings is a very lightweight metal band with a unique code. Ringing with a metal band relies on the bird being caught, or found dead or injured, so that the ring can be read. The other ring is made of coloured plastic with an individual code which is designed to be highly visible from a distance, meaning that birds can be identified from photos or by watching them with binoculars.

The chicks are around six weeks old when the rings are fitted. I find their rate of growth astonishing as they almost look like adult birds by then, meaning that the rings fit properly (and the birds won’t outgrow them) but the chicks are not yet able to fly, so are easier to handle. The ring allows us to identify the individual birds and provides a great deal of information about their movements throughout their lifetimes. Without ringing, we would never know that two of our nesting males are brothers from Wales!

This year, we have decided to give the chicks local names. All of the 2017 chicks will have names beginning with ‘A’. In 2018, the chicks will have names beginning with ‘B’ and so on. The chicks on Nest 1A have been named Amble, Ayle and Acton, and I dearly hope to see them return in the future.

For a number of years, Northumberland Wildlife Trust has run Osprey Watch at Kielder Waterside. We’re very lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers who love to share their knowledge of all things osprey (and other wildlife) with the many visitors to Kielder, who come from all over the world. I must say a huge thankyou to our volunteer team and our first ever Kielder Osprey Assistant Katy Smart, who managed to share the story of these wonderful birds with over 7000 visitors this year. As I write this, a number of the birds have started their migration and it won’t be long until they’ve all set off on the perilous journey to their wintering grounds.

The young ospreys fly alone and typically will have never caught a fish before they set off! Adult birds migrate every year, but young ospreys normally don’t make their first journey back to the UK until they are two years old and often don’t breed until they are 3-5 years old. The ospreys typically return to Kielder in late March or early April, having spent the winter in warmer countries like Senegal or southern Iberia. Astonishingly, their migration of around 3,500 miles can be completed in 2 weeks, at speeds of up to 25mph.

METHOD Preheat your oven to 220°C/fan 200°C/gas. Mix together the mustard and paprika and rub all over the chicken. So whose fault is it anyway?

“There’s absolutely every reason to check if you’ve been sold PPI.” I don’t know about you, but I’ll be glad when the PPI claims deadline is reached and we can get rid of these annoying adverts, but don’t hold your breath – it’s still two years away. Even so, some lawyers are appealing against it so they can continue with their profitable “no win, no fee” cases. We live in an age of litigation, with legal fault claims frequently in the news and encouragement to pursue compensation on the flimsiest of evidence. We’re told that our car insurance premiums are too high because so many drivers make spurious whiplash injury claims, and the latest wheeze is to say you suffered food poisoning in your holiday hotel a couple of years ago and get the travel insurance to pay up.

When something more serious happens and there’s a real tragedy, alongside the genuine concern and generous response we usually see for the victims, the cry goes up “Who’s to blame?” The buck has to stop somewhere, and heads must roll, whether it’s for a tower block fire, a terrorist attack, a police cover-up, or a flooded town. It’s someone’s fault – not mine, of course – and we see public enquiries, private investigations, and tabloid press witch-hunts to find out and point the finger.

There’s a natural human tendency for me to hold others to account for their faults while excusing my own. “Don’t blame me – I can’t help it – that’s the way I was made”; but don’t try that line if you’ve done something to hurt me! What has science to say about this?

With rapid advances in the modern field of genetics, we can trace our inheritance of all kinds of characteristics across generations. It is known that particular genetic abnormalities are associated with the development of certain diseases and disabilities, and in some cases a direct cause can be demonstrated. In other cases, however, the genetic feature indicates a tendency, but not an automatic cause for something unusual, and perhaps undesirable, to happen: there’s a huge difference between genetic influence (it might happen) and genetic determinism (it will happen). Despite much research, and contrary to some media hype at times, there is no real evidence for genes that cause laziness, obesity, or a particular sexual orientation: nature and nurture – genetic and environmental influences – are both at work. The debate goes on: are great musicians or footballers or geniuses born or made?

“Science and morality: can I blame my genes?” is the subject of one of the autumn series of four talks on the science-faith interface I’ve organised for our area, which you’ll see advertised in this issue of Tyne Valley Express and on posters and flyers. It’s in Stocksfield on the evening of Thursday 28 September, and brings together, in Keith Fox from Southampton, expertise in biochemistry and genetics and a Christian perspective of moral responsibility for our behaviour.

Another dimension of blame arises when we hear of floods, droughts, eruptions and earthquakes. Have we contributed to some of these through climate change, and do our habits and lifestyles make the effects of natural disasters worse than they might be? Have you seen the 2001 film “The man who sued God”? In it, Billy Connolly (knighted in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours) is a fisherman whose boat is destroyed by lightning. The insurance company refuses to pay out, saying it was an “Act of God” and therefore excluded from cover. With comical logic, he sets about suing God for compensation, which he does by taking all the church denominations to court. I won’t give away the ending, but neither Billy nor God comes out as loser.

Joking aside, this is a serious issue, especially for millions in Nepal, Haiti, Bangladesh, Pacific islands and many other parts of the world, rich and (more especially) poor. As many commentators asked in 2004, “Where was God in the Boxing Day tsunami?” So “Are natural disasters Acts of God?” – a question posed by Bob White from Cambridge, an expert on volcanoes and earthquakes, in another of our autumn series talks, in Ponteland on Wednesday 11 October. Bob’s book on this topic is called “Who is to blame?” and he approaches the subject as both an eminent geologist and a committed Christian, currently Director of the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion in Cambridge and a Fellow of the Royal Society.

The other talks coming your way are on quite different topics of current interest; one looks at our place on a small planet in a huge universe and asks about human significance in a cosmic context (a theme of many SciFi films), and the other addresses the development and use of artificial intelligence, with some people’s fear that robots will take over our jobs and maybe the whole world (shades of “The Matrix”). If they do, then I suppose we can stop blaming other people for what goes wrong, or even “the system”, and can blame the machines – but then, since we made them, whose fault are they in the first place?

A Very Successful Day!

Dodging the showers has probably been the theme of the summer to date! Whilst our gardens and the plants within have been happy with this, it is a bit off-putting for us to go out and visit gardens in these conditions.

Nevertheless, at the end of July we had our National Garden Scheme open day, and despite a mixed forecast with some heavy showers predicted, the rain stayed away and we had a very healthy turnout of over 190 visitors.

I would like to sincerely thank those of you who came and it was great to meet and have a chat with as many of you as I could. In all, the event raised £841 for various charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie and Hospice UK. We had some very good feedback from those who came with many appreciative comments such as, ‘It’s more than a garden; it’s a philosophy!’. Now I can’t ask for more than that.

In order not to disappoint, the plants in the garden perfomed admirably and on cue. Ligularia ‘The Rocket’ was reaching the pinnacle of its growth as its long upright amber flower stems stretched for the sky, reaching well over 2.2m. A nearby well-timed display, topping 2.5m, came from the six, dark maroon angelica gigas, planted in the previous autumn. These skyscraping perennials blended harmoniously together, dominating the damp garden, with much admiration from the visitors. Whilst delphiniums and monkshoods were fading there were many others jostling to take over such as the pink spires of persicaria amplexicaulis which is such a fabulous attraction for bees.

Several drifts of monardas were demanding attention too. Monarda ‘Blaustrumpf’,a marvelous purplish blue variety, perfectly complemented the pervasive scented swathe of lilac phlox reaching it’s magnificent crescendo. Bee-covered monarda ‘Mohawk’ was enquired about many times over but the real star of them all was monarda ‘Adam’ whose rich, dark red whorls of flowers provided a show-stopping display alongside the alluring yellow-flowered achillea ‘Cloth of gold’ and devilish- red, crocosmia ‘Lucifer’.

Over the spring and early summer, our chickens had helped us to make lots of great compost which was spread liberally around the veg plot with the result that the veg beds were now bustling with prolific cabbages, courgettes, pumpkins, beetroot, parsnips, celeriac and onions. Some visitors from Portugal remarked that our beef steak ‘Marmande’ tomatoes in the greenhouse were the biggest they had ever seen growing in this country! They taste pretty good too.

PRUDHOE GARDENERS’ ASSOCIATION We manage the Prudhoe Town Allotments on behalf of Prudhoe Town Council. These allotments are available for those who live within the parish of Prudhoe (which includes Mickley). To apply for an allotment you need to go to the Hut behind the West Wylam Inn Inn, Front Street, Prudhoe on Saturday mornings between 10am and 12 noon to add your name to the waiting list. Any gardener who has a home garden can be a member of the Prudhoe Gardeners’ Association on payment of a small annual fee.

This allows you to purchase seeds, fertilisers, compost and garden sundries at our discount rates during our Saturday morning opening hours. Disconected!

Our relationship had always been a somewhat troublesome one.

There was love. There was occasionally a bit of hate. There was a lot of time spent together which I had begun to resent. Our relationship was based on familiarity, routine, comfort and instant gratification.

I’d doubted this relationship on several occasions over the years.

Wondered if it had become unhealthy, mindless and addictive. Yet, most people I knew were in exactly the same relationship. So, why did I feel increasingly uncomfortable? It was time, I decided, to break up with my smartphone.

Up until a few years ago I’d had a pay-as-you-go basic Nokia, whose battery lived for almost forever and seldom left its place on the kitchen windowsill. However, I was tempted by the lure of instant access to the plethora of social media apps, email, my work email, weather apps, WhatsApp and, oh yes, the ‘selfie’ camera complete with ego-stroking, beautifying filters to make me look trimmer, brighter, lighter, teeth whiter and many other editing tools to make me Instagram-acceptable.

After a hiatus, I re-joined Facebook (another love/hate relationship); my new phone’s app made uploading my filtered photos incredibly easy. Then, I’d wait for a gratifying ping, a hoped-for beep, an addictive buzz to tell me that someone, out there in Social Media World had ‘liked’ my photo, comment or post and so it went on. And on.

Although I turned my phone off at night, I’d sometimes wake in the early hours and, despite reading how blue light only fed insomnia, I’d find myself just quickly checking Facebook. A teeny peek at my email.

Ooh, a WhatsApp message! …and repeat. In the morning, my phone would be what I’d settle down to read over my first cup of tea of the day. And so it would go on, day in, day out. Yet, increasingly, I would feel a niggle that something wasn’t right. I’d feel like I didn’t have enough time. I’d claim to love reading, yet the pile of books remained unread.

I’d enjoy my morning walks, but instead of simply being in awe of what I saw, I’d feel compelled to photograph it for my Facebook page or (she winces now) take a flushed-but-glowing selfie after a morning run in a look-how-healthy-Iam-subtle-brag and share it as soon as I got home on Fa ceb o o k .

Arty filters?

Check. Ensure associated text was sufficiently self-deprecating to not appear too self-obsessed and braggy? Check. Upload. Wait. ‘Like’ received. Gratification! And repeat.

Perhaps that’s a little harsh. Having instant-access to email was indeed useful, and I still believe it has its uses. Facebook helped me stay in touch at the click of a button with friends around the world. I did feel a warm, fuzzy ‘connectedness’ when someone ‘tagged’ me in a photo of family or friends. However, my smartphone meant it was far too easy to ‘check-in’ online so not to fuel any fear-of-missing-out. I could have a quick peek at my work email at the weekend to ‘be prepared’ for Monday even though it meant being in work-mode again on my day off. Rightly or wrongly, (and of course it’s subjective) being turned on had become a turn-off. And it seems that research is arriving at similar conclusions: The smartphone’s myriad of functions mean that the average user checks their phone 85 times a day and 91 per cent of users would never leave home without their ‘other half’ in hand.

However, in this relationship, the smartphone never shuts up. And research suggests that ignoring your phone is as impossible as ignoring someone calling out your own name. Even when the phone is silent and not in use, it still commands our attention. A recent study titled Brain Drain: The Mere Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity (Ward et al., 2017) indicates that the mere presence of a phone on the table, in a pocket or bag, is enough to impair performance on off-screen tasks.

So, I broke up with my smartphone. I disconnected. After a couple of failed attempts, I even managed the you’ve-got-to-wait-14-daysbefore-your-Facebook-page-is-REALLY-deleted limbo. No more egostroking ‘likes’. No more social comparisons. No more knowing what everyone everywhere was doing, saying, thinking or eating. No more instant-gratification, easy-access-to-information, mindless scrolling or midnight texting. No more chatter, noise and the feeling that I had to be ‘on’ all the time.

I now have a steady, solid, reliable, minimalistic phone. It’s only been a couple of weeks, so who knows how this relationship will go. I’m not sure how the “no-WhatsApp-text-message-only-please” request is going to go down and if I’ll slip off many a social radar. It’s slightly annoying having to turn on my P.C to check the weather forecast (I haven’t had a television for nearly a decade - no subtle brag intended). Trying to quickly text on my ‘dumbphone’ has provoked a few expletives but, it’s also reminded me to slow down, take a breath, and pay more attention to what I’m doing. Although I don’t know what everyone is saying, going, wearing, humble-bragging and opinionating about (that was me too), I rather like not knowing. There is so much informationoverload in our society that not knowing, and being selective about when and where and how I learn new information, is truly liberating.

Where once I would have mindlessly passed away an hour before bed on my phone, I now find my nose buried into a book. Every morning, instead of checking my Facebook feed, I check-in mindfully and with gratitude through scribbling away in a daily journal. When I go for an early morning dog walk, I enjoy the moment and really notice what’s all around me, not always thinking ahead to how I may capture it through a filtered camera lens or how it may look on my profile page. I still share photos with family but it’s not through social media. And, as I promised myself to have a couple of ‘no-tech’ days each week, there’s no checking work emails on my days off.

By disconnecting, I feel more connected to what I feel really matters. The world is incredibly real and beautiful. Yet, far too often I lived in a virtual world of instant gratification, social comparisons, chatter and noise, pounding the relentless hedonic treadmill in search of the next ping and buzz of social acceptance. My identity had, to a degree, become a fabricated, filtered online one, rather than a three-dimensional, real, raw, blood-running-through-these-veins, breathing being. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with people using smartphones and social media, has it become an unquestioned social norm?

So, the relationship is over. No more smartphone. No more social media. No more instant-access to just about anything once I shut down my P.C for the working day. Instead, I’m filling blank pages with words; I’m doodling just because I enjoy it. I’m walking, jogging, skipping, swinga-swinging (see last article!) at dawn and not documenting every success, failure, goal achieved, every thought, feeling or mile ran.

I’m reading wonderful, inspiring books. I’m sleeping soundly. I don’t know everything that’s going on in the world, but when I do choose to know, I make sure I do so mindfully and with purpose.

If you have ever thought about using your smartphone less, or even breaking up with it completely - I truly would say give it a go. Try it out. Experiment. Head out into the wonderful outdoors and leave the

phone behind. Disconnect to reconnect with what you feel truly matters.

Leading watercolour artist Paul Stangroom is renowned for his landscapes of the wild North Pennines and his Windows paintings, looking out from abandoned dwellings. Since picking up the keys to Prudhoe’s derelict laundrette three years ago, Washington-born Paul has continued developing his art, travelling to paint, teach and gather ideas. Fresh paintings leave the global gallery for London, India, China and New Zealand. Go into the gallery, and you can browse Paul’s paintings, books and cards – alongside handmade woollen shawls and blankets from the Himalayas. Paul’s partner Alison Woodman worked alongside him to renovate the gallery and develop her soft furnishings business, Forest Edge Interiors.

Paul has been visiting the Gaddi tribe in the welcoming villages of the Himalayas since the 1980s and recently decided to sell shawls and blankets on their behalf. ‘I buy from an extended family in a small village, Noli. Blankets and shawls are made from sheep the people have reared and wool they’ve spun and woven at home,’ he says. ‘The Gaddi are a semi-nomadic tribe. They use the blankets themselves for bedding - and even makeshift tents, when they’re living in the hills with their sheep.’ The blankets take two months to weave, on looms in village homes.

Paul’s Whitby Abbey series came about as part of an English Heritage archaeological study to record the Abbey’s structure. ‘I was asked to record sections of the medieval stone carvings. This involved working off a scaffold, often high up in the Abbey,’ Paul explains. ‘The paintings were actual size.’

The sale of paintings of broken down old buildings has been used to renovate a very old and rundown house.

Mouth-watering curry delicious yes, but can it also improve your mood?

We left off last time looking at how the famous St John’s wort counters the blues but there are other plants proven by science to do this. In our quest for botanical brain balms this time we uncover how turmeric, often used in curries, is doing much more than satisfy your appetite.

A blues busting vibrant spice

With many of us experiencing at least one bout of the blues (aka mild depression) in our lives, and with side effects of current orthodox drugs like nausea and dizziness, it’s good to know there are safe plant medicine options out there that have been proven by science.

We’ve touched on the main idea about depression being due to a lack of our brain’s serotonin, with drugs today restoring this ‘happy’ brain signal thereby helping to restore good mood. But today research is also looking at drugs controlling inflammation in the brain - with anti-inflammatories the new buzz word.

One of the most colorful spices around, and a key anti-inflammatory - on trend in health magazines, is turmeric (Curcuma longa syn C. domestica).

A beautiful tropical plant, holy and auspicious in India its been used for thousands of years from kitchen to clinic. Best known as a major ingredient of curry, it improves mood and has multiple other health benefits, many scientifically verified.

About the plant A perennial from South Asian that likes humid

conditions and well-drained soil, it has long, blade-like, bunched, sweetsmelling leaves and low star-like yellow and pink flower heads. Part of the ginger family growing to 1m (20 inches), its rhizome (harvested in winter) looks similar to ginger but beneath the skin its flesh is bright orange/ yellow with a peppery aroma and mild sweet flavour. In temperate zones it grows well in pots indoors.

History and folklore Listed in 600BC Assyrian herbals and used

by the Greek physician and botanist Dioscorides, turmerics name comes from tarmaret (Latin terra merita, merit of the earth). Called Haldi in Hindi, Hindu monks’ robes are dyed in turmeric to reflect the ‘sun solar plexus chakra’. Traditionally used in Asia - it’s a major ingredient in the plant medicine xioyao-san, and also in Europe, for stress and depression and as an anti-inflammatory and anti-coagulant. Today, research into turmeric is rising as the interest in food as medicine is re-awoken from days of Hippocrates.

What scientists say In humans Turmeric, or its ingredient

curcumin improve mood in major depression in several controlled trials, with effects greater in middle age. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory (tested stronger than hydrocortisone) and reduces inflammation (C reactive protein) in some controlled studies. It also improves quality of life in cancer patients in controlled studies due to suppressing tumour-related inflammation, and is clinically antioxidant. Over 100 clinical trials show curcumins efficacy in chronic disease - from cancers, diabetes and obesity to cardiovascular, pulmonary and autoimmune as well as neurological. Its bioavailability (being insoluble in water) may have limited some clinical trial outcomes.

In the lab Numerous preclinical studies show a potential role for

curcumin in bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. It alters neuronal growth in models of stress and is anti-depressant and neuroprotective in several lab models. Like rosemary, curcumin elevates brain dopamine and interacts with happy (dopamine and serotonin) signals. Also a key antimicrobial.

Key ingredients The bioactive yellow curcumin (sixty percent of

the plants polyphenols), isolated two centuries ago, has been extensively investigated and affects various molecules and systems. The essential oil contains turmerone and includes monoterpenes zingiberene and curcumene (also in lemon verbena). Its aroma is due to turmerone, arturmerone and zingiberene.

How to take it The root freshly grated or dried can be taken as a

tea up to 1g (0.04oz) daily or tincture (150g fresh root per 500ml/5.3oz per 1pt) 5ml (1tsp) 3x daily. Adds a deliciously novel flavour freshly grated in salads. Used in cooking - in almost any dish - fat is added to help absorption. Take dried as powder in food or mixed with water or milk (4g 2x daily - adding 5ml (1tsp) lecithin may help absorption), as tablets or capsules (take as directed; some commercial preparations claim better bioavailability).

in biliary obstruction and due to drug metabolising effects caution with cardiovascular drugs, anticoagulants, antidepressants, antibiotics, chemotherapeutic agents, antihistamines and other anti-inflammatory drugs - where doses greater than 15g/0.5oz per day should not be used.

Excessively large doses may cause stomach upset and diarrhoea. Avoid sun with topical application as is phototoxic in the lab. Can be adulterated with lead oxide or an illegal yellow dye so source carefully. Caution when handling as removing yellow stains is challenging.

Always consult a registered medical herbalist before taking any plant medicinally and inform your health care provider if you are taking medication or have any medical condition. Be sure of the identity of your plant and take only at the recommended dose.

The first clinical study to show curcumin effective for depression was in Gujarat, India. There, curcumin was given for six weeks to 60 people with major depression. It was found to be as efficacious, in two assessment measures, as the conventional (SSRI) antidepressant fluoxetine.

Managing Back and Neck Pain Back pain is an extremely common condition, so common in fact that 4 out of 5 people will have suffered from some form of back pain in their lifetime.

What causes back pain?

There can be many causes of back pain, but more often than not it’s nothing more than sitting, standing or bending awkwardly which triggers the pain. Back pain can develop suddenly or become an on-going problem so understanding the cause of it is crucial to determine the best cause of treatment.

Some of the most common causes of back pain are: l Sitting, standing or bending awkwardly for long periods l Lifting heavy objects l Bad posture l Seating position when driving l Over-stretching or overusing the muscles

The earlier anyone with back pain can seek advice for lower back pain, the quicker the problem can be dealt with. Unfortunately, we see many people at Physiotherapy Matters who have a chronic history of lower back pain and it can take a little longer to sort the problem out.

Preventing back pain…

Sitting, standing and lying incorrectly are all factors which can affect the health of your back. To prevent back pain, try to avoid putting your back under too much pressure, and exercise regularly to strengthen your back and improve flexibility.

Some other ways in which you can prevent back pain are: l Avoiding sudden movements l Wearing flat, comfortable shoes to reduce back pressure l Improving posture when sitting, standing and lying down l Assuming the correct lifting position l Increasing physical activity

When suffering from back pain, it is important to stay active as opposed to resting, as being inactive for long periods of time can do more damage to your back. Depending on the type of back pain you’re suffering from, the following can be effective treatments: l Hot or cold compression packs to reduce pain l Pain killers (please take advice from your local pharmacy) l Manual therapy including spinal manipulation, spinal mobilisation and massage l Physical activity including aerobics, muscle strengthening, postural control and stretching l Acupuncture
