Sliding Sash Windows – PVC or Timber?

Many UK properties still have traditional single glazed sash windows and despite how attractive they look, they are a real weakness when it comes to functionality and heat loss.

People living in Grade II listed buildings and conservation areas often have to endure ill fitting, cold and drafty windows, or suffer the cost of replacement timber windows that are far more expensive than an equivalent PVCu counterpart.

Over the past few years, much time, effort and money has been spent designing highly efficient PVCu windows with a period feel, to complement and enhance period properties and listed buildings. These windows make living in an older property far more pleasant, economical, environmentally friendly and help retain the period look and charm without the need of future maintenance (filling, painting etc.).

So when you want to replace sliding sash windows, should you opt for timber or PVC replacements?

Cost of Timber v PVC Sash Windows Many people opt for PVC simply because it’s cheaper. In fact you can replace a timber sliding sash window for a PVC equivalent for around £750 – while a like for like timber replacement may cost nearer £1 350.

In heavily glazed Victorian properties, sash windows are prevalent and you can almost replace two windows with PVC for the cost of replacing one with wood. This massive price difference is often a key decision maker for most people when it comes to replacing their windows.

Reducing Heat Loss Replacing single glazing with double glazing will increase immediately the comfort of your home. Rooms will warm up quicker when you turn the heating on and cold draughts that crept around the edges of the old windows should be a thing of the past.

An old single glazed sash window will have a U value of about 5.1, while a new double

glazed box sash window in timber will be about 1.7 with PVC at about 1.6 The lower the number the better, or warmer!

These are approximate u-values and if you decided to go for high efficiency glass, the U-value can drop as low as 1.2 So based on the fact that timber matches PVC pretty much on the efficiency, we need to consider the other factors at play here.

Lifespan and Maintenance Most people looking to replace their original timber windows are replacing window frames built in the late 19th or early 20th century. This shows that if correctly looked after, timber sash windows can last. But in order for them to last this long, they do require regular maintenance – if the frame lacks paint or varnish, the wood will begin to rot very quickly. Also, without maintenance to the moving sashes and weights, timber windows can be difficult or impossible to open, especially if painted shut! Replacing these windows in timber will require the same level of maintenance, so if you opt for this, make sure you choose hardwood windows, since these will last longer!

The lifetime of PVC windows has been set at 35 to 40 years by BRE (the Building Research Establishment), far less than the timber frame windows (provided they are maintained correctly) but having said that, they do require very little maintenance over their expected lifespan.

The Look of Timber v PVC Sash Windows Estate agents often come out with the classic line ‘properties with timber frame windows look better and sell for more’. Well, in certain cases that’s true, but like many things beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The truth is that good PVC sash windows look very similar to timber sash windows.

With authentic butt joints and ornate sash horns, along with period hardware and a wide range of heritage finishes, a PVC sash window can accurately replicate the styling of a traditional timber sliding sash window.

So with enhanced thermal performance combined with cutting-edge technology to give a smooth operation and sashes that tilt for easy cleaning, PVC sliding sash windows can provide for an attractive alternative to timber.

September is like no other Its days change colour and weather, No other month can say quite the same For every day, I can feel the change.

No truer words have been spoken about the month of September, traditionally the end of summer and the start of the autumn. It is a fantastic month full of change, beauty, colour, warmth and cold. It is also a time of plenty and after the wonderful summer we have had, that means a bountiful harvest from field and hedge. As I write in mid-August, summer is still in full flow and one of the most magical events of the British summertime is just coming to a close, the roe deer rut.

This year more than ever before, I’ve encountered the roe rut, perhaps I’ve had more time to notice it or I’ve just been in the right place at the right time; it’s probably been a bit of both. Roe deer are a common species in the Tyne Valley, inhabiting many varied habitats, but mainly woodland and the woodland edge, where they like to feed and browse.

Battling Bucks

Towards the end of July and early August the bucks are courting does and can often be seen in the open, pursuing them or chasing young males off their ‘patch’. This is not the harsh, noisy and brutal affairs of roaring red stags in highland glens, but a more subtle affair, often hidden away in dense woodland or a small meadow. That’s not to say the bucks don’t fight, but it is a much less frequent and hostile affair, befitting the spirit of the forest. I’ve seen bucks clashing twice this year and it’s truly exciting.

If you ever get the chance to be in the company of a deer expert, you’re in for a real treat as the woodland floor can erupt into a scene from Jurassic Park - the undergrowth shakes and branches tremble, as an unseen creature hurtles toward you. Thankfully it’s not a velociraptor, but still enough to make you burst and twitch with excitement. It can be either a handsome buck or even a doe breaking cover, often at very close quarters to see who is making this enticing call. If you haven’t tried it, well you’ll have to wait till next year but try it, if you can for a sometimes mad, adrenalin thrilled encounter with the fairy of the woods.

In and around the garden, robins are very vocal, claiming their territories for next year. Use the opportunity to take down your nest boxes and give them a clean out or put one up if you don’t have one. Every little counts. This year I have put up two swift boxes in the hope that next year they will be used.

I put them up last month so their young of this year can get the chance of locating them and committing them to memory for their return next year.

Don’t forget to go down to the woods. Keep an eye out for the spirit of the woods and you may even find an early cast antler. Winter is just around the corner and we never know what that has in store for us.

Restoring Ratty

And finally - I have a life-long love of water voles, so you can imagine my delight that the five year ‘Restoring Ratty’ water vole project aimed at the reintroduction of water voles to Kielder is now set to start, and it has all been made possible by National Lottery players and a grant of £421,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The project will establish a sustainable population of water voles within Kielder Water and Forest Park (KWFP), on the upper catchment tributaries of the Kielder Burn and North Tyne above Kielder Reservoir. To achieve this, a team of volunteers and conservationists will carry out a programme of captive breeding and reintroduction of voles to areas with suitable wetland habitat where there is an absence of its main enemy, American mink.

By the end of the five year project, the team hopes there will be well established water vole colonies at Kielder with the additional hope that this much loved mammal will continue to live in the area in the future. Exciting times, so keep an eye on Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s website www. nwt.org.uk and Facebook page.

Butterflies and Birds

What else is there to look out for at this time of the year? Always keep some late season flowers in the garden, like sedum - it’s great for butterflies that over-winter such as red admirals and peacocks.

As September gains momentum, expect the first frosts and cooler evenings - a change to light patterns too as the nights draw in. The martins and swallows will depart and the winter thrushes will arrive. Over the marshes and lakes in the Tyne Valley, the ducks and geese will start to arrive; long skeins of pink foots and white fronted geese will be overhead, with widgeon and teal descending on lakes and ponds.

Listen for the first winter thrushes arriving on clear nights from the north; their singular ‘tssst’ call can be heard in the dark as they fly in overhead. I usually hear my first redwings in the last week of the month. Don’t forget to go into Hexham or nearby to watch the salmon leaping on the weirs; their numbers always peak in the autumn months after rain and it’s a spectacular vision.

Autumn in the Tyne Valley

I remember when I was young that the summer holidays lasted for ever - a day lasted a week and a week lasted a month. The sun shone from dawn to dusk in a cloudless sky and we all ran around in shorts and plimsolls, roamed up hill and down dale miles from home. No one had ever heard of Factor 15 or skin cancer. I was brought up in Hampshire, near the Hampshire Downs, so I could say ‘roamed up down and down down’. Even then autumn had its charms – back to school, we’d be reunited with friends and welcome the start of the rugby season, with the pitch wet with dew and a crispness in the air. Autumn still retains its magic. The overwhelming greenness of summer begins to tire and look ragged before metamorphosing into the warmth of autumn’s garb.

Autumn mornings can be cool, crisp, sometimes frosty and then develop into warm balmy days. To be out on such mornings is a joy in itself. With the sunrise/sunset and weather Apps on my laptop and iPhone, there is also a prospect of some enjoyable and rewarding photography. Just as satisfying and pleasurable as the photography is finding a comfortable rock to sit on, brewing up a mug of tea or soup and enjoying soaking up the growing warmth of the rising autumn sun.

Autumn also means darker evenings, making low light photography more convenient. Provided you have a tripod and a remote release, this may be much easier than you may think. If you don’t have a cable release, the camera self-timer should be just as effective. If you don’t have a tripod, a convenient wall or post may suffice. Very often the cameras exposure system is pretty good, giving you good results. With the review facility on most cameras, if the picture is not to your liking you can increase or decrease the exposure to your satisfaction.

With firework displays, set a long exposure and release the shutter.

Don’t wait till you see a firework before firing the shutter - try instead to anticipate when they will be set off. With major displays the fireworks are being lit constantly and you stand a good chance of success.

Autumn is a great time of year for photography, whether it be misty morning, the magnificence of autumn colour, kids kicking fallen leaves or events such as fireworks or Hexham Spook Night. Also worth considering is the annual Hexham canoeist weekend of 5th and 6th November based at Tyne Green.

The British weather hasn’t been much to write home about this summer, so you may have escaped the wind and drizzle by jetting off to sunnier climes or having time off to relax with friends and family. Now, though, as summer draws to a close, you realise the novel you were going to write when you were off work didn’t quite happen and that optimistic fitness/diet regime hasn’t resulted in a ‘new you’. To top it off, you’ve blown all your cash on your holiday so it’s going to be a tight couple of months and, although you caught a glimpse of freedom on your travels, you’re now back in the same old routine and nothing has changed. It’s time to go back to work/ university/school and the post-summer blues are kicking in.

Some people bounce back and adjust to the new season but for others it’s not so easy. It’s normal to feel more cheerful and energetic when the sun is shining and the days are longer, or to eat more and sleep longer in winter. However, if you experience Seasonal Affective Disorder, the change in seasons will have a much greater effect on your mood and energy levels and could lead to symptoms of depression that have a significant impact on your day-to-day life. According to the Mental Health Foundation, ‘seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that the NHS estimates to affect approximately one in 15 people in the UK between September and April.’

The Symptoms of SAD

Mental health organisation, Mind, says that for some people, symptoms of SAD are fairly mild and last for a shorter period, mainly during December, January and February, and are known as the ‘winter blues’, or sub-syndromal SAD, but some people have very severe symptoms and find it hard to carry out day-to-day tasks without continuous treatment. SAD can be caused by changes in daylight (some people need a lot more light than others for their body to regulate sleep, appetite, sex drive, temperature, mood and activity), low serotonin levels and/or high melatonin levels, a disrupted body clock or an unwelcome or traumatic life event, such a major loss or bereavement or a serious illness. It may also be triggered by physical illness, a change to diet or medication, or the use of drugs or alcohol.

So, whether you’re suffering from post-holiday blues or a deeper and longer-lasting period of low mood, what can you do to lift your spirits?

You may not feel like it at the time, but physical activity is an effective way of lifting your mood and increasing your energy levels. It doesn’t have to be anything particularly strenuous – doing housework, gardening or going for a gentle walk can all help – and doing something physical outside in a green space, such as the park or the countryside, has been shown to be especially helpful. A healthy diet is also important, so try to balance the common SAD craving for carbohydrates with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Get Support

As the dark nights draw in and the weather gets chillier, avoid cutting yourself off socially by staying indoors too much. We humans are sociable creatures who need contact with others in order to stay mentally healthy, so ensure you reach out and get whatever contact you need to stay happy and well.

If you find it hard to adjust to the new season, use your emotions to help you: difficult feelings could be an indication that something needs to change in your life, but the good news is that recognising and regulating your emotions will help you in addressing any issues you may have. Look for commons signs of low mood such as a lack of appetite, trouble sleeping, moodiness, an inability to control impulses, apathy, or skipping activities that are normally of interest.

If the post-summer blues show no signs of shifting, it might be a sign of a more prolonged problem. Depression can rear its head at any time in life and often prevents us from taking pleasure from the things that used to make us happy. If you find you can’t manage your symptoms yourself, or that they’re starting to have a significant impact on your day-to-day life, you might find it helpful to talk to your GP or a mental health professional.

Talking treatments such as counselling can be extremely useful in helping people to cope with SAD symptoms and can help you to recognise and deal with other factors that may be contributing to your low mood.

Be Aware of your Feelings

Increasing your exposure to daylight by going outdoors, particularly around midday or on bright days, can help to reduce symptoms. Even looking out of a window, or just being in daylight, can improve your mood - so wrap up and go for a walk or do some outdoor activities.

People are more likely to suffer from stress as nights lengthen, so if you find this time of year difficult, try planning ahead to reduce the amount of stressful or difficult activities you have during this time. Another tip is to make more spare time to rest, relax or do pleasant activities in the winter – perhaps pamper yourself physically with a massage or learn a relaxation technique to help you unwind.

BBQ PULLED PORK RECIPE Serves: 4 Tuck into this healthy-version of an all American classic. In this video recipe lean pork is slow-cooked then shredded or ‘pulled’ and layered with BBQ sauce.

Ingredients l 1.5-2kg pork shoulder, all fat removed l 5 tbsp Worcestershire sauce l 1 tsp mustard powder l 500g passata l 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar l 2 cloves of garlic, crushed l 3 tbsp sweetener l Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method 1. In a small bowl, mix passata, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, mustard powder, garlic, sweetener and seasoning.

Transfer to a small pan and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.

2. Meanwhile, trim and remove all visible fat from the pork and sear all sides in a hot frying pan.

Transfer to a slow cooker coat with the sauce and cook for 8-12 hours on LOW. 3. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place on a cutting board. Allow the meat to

cool for approximately 15 minutes, then shred into bite- sized pieces using two forks.

4. Remove the sauce from the pan and set aside to drizzle on the meat later.

Tip: On an Extra Easy day serve with a dollop of sauce, steamed green beans and a 60g wholemeal roll (Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice).

For an Extra Easy SP day fill at least half of your plate with delicious Speed vegetables or Speed salad of your choice.

Jams and the Giant Leek September in the Tyne Valley

Injection of Elderflower Gin, Anyone?

What else is new? Martha and Lulu’s chocolates, confectionary and cakes just get better and better. Last week, I sampled a homemade gin and tonic marshmallow from Martha and Lulu – after injecting it with elderflower gin. Each cushiony, lemon-scented marshmallow comes with a tiny pipette of elderflower gin to inject yourself – perfect to round off a meal with friends.

From traditional leek shows to street stalls, the Tyne Valley has plenty for foodies to enjoy. Imaginative independent makers are offering clever and quirky treats, from wolf pies to marshmallows injected with gin, and September is a great month to try out new and traditional treats.

Many of our Tyne Valley pubs feature the best of both the 19th and 21st Centuries - leek shows go right back to the mid 1800s.

Some say the giant veg are not good for the pot due to the chemicals growers use, but organic methods are increasingly popular. Leek club auctions are also a superb source of homebaked cakes, jams, chutneys and other produce. Pubs like the Feathers Inn at Hedley-on-the-Hill combine the best of both worlds – offering both a traditional leek show and very contemporary food choices.

The Feathers’ leek club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

A regular award winner for its food, the hilltop pub is County Dining Pub of the Year in the Good Pub guide 2016, and always reminds me of The Tower Arms, the cosy pub nestled into Near Sawrey in the Lake District where Beatrix Potter lived.

Their leek club show is on 3-4th September, with the auction at 6.30pm on Sunday and supper afterwards at around 8.15pm.

Whether you’re a broth maker, baker or grower, go along to Hedley and check it out.

Some of the region’s best restaurants are tucked away treasures.

Il Piccolo in St Helen’s Street, Corbridge, with its Sicilian chef Emanuele, is popular amongst Italian foodies in the Valley. It’s best known for its lavish a la carte menu (currently featuring fritto misto, and beef fillet medallions in black pepper, cream and mushroom sauce), pasta, traditional and original pizzas, and Italian special dishes, see left.

Apple Caramel Cups, Martha and Lulu

As autumn approaches, toffee caramel cups – smooth, toffee caramel, topped with chocolate covered apple pieces - might appeal. Many of the fruits and herbs used in the recipes come from imaginative chocolatier Becky’s own garden. Il Piccolo, Corbridge – Cosy Deli and Stuzzico Bar Il Piccolo also houses a well-stocked deli specialising in Italian produce, including cheese, oils, artisan pasta and sauces and a range of fat, stuffed olives. These Italian cherries, see right, in a heavy syrup are delicious atop cold ice cream - or warm fruit pies, fresh from the oven.

Stuzzico Bar is at the left of the restaurant - a tiny, tiled and character-filled wine and tapas bar, offering imaginative Italian tapas, from antipasti to pints of prawns (blackboard menu varies) – and of course, Proseccos and other wines, by the glass or bottle.

Harvest Time in the Tyne Valley With our abundant Tyne Valley harvests, autumn is the time to head to local farmers’ markets to pick up fresh products direct. Hexham’s market is extremely well-established, drawing producers from within 50 miles. For new producers, the guest stall system allows you to try out the market for a short period.

Wolf Pie and Grey Squirrel I’ve savoured food from many of the markets’ regular producers and personally recommend Ridley’s Fish and Game stall for their superb fresh scallops, fish, and, more surprisingly, homebaked goods, such as fruit crumbles and pies. I haven’t tried their grey squirrel!

Another market favourite of mine is the Moody Baker from Alston, who have a range of fine breads. Their vegetarian pies, pasties and wraps are delicious – and I’ve heard tales of a Wolf pie, made with Allendale Breweries Wolf Ale.

Autumn is fast approaching and we see the fall of leaves from trees, the stark, bare branches, the darker nights drawing in, and the re-emergence of hundreds of conkers blanketing the ground.

These funny, prickly seeds never fail to bring hoards of eager children and their parents out of the house to gather stashes of carrier bags full, with the intention of later prising open the shells to reveal the shiny, chocolate coloured conkers.

Why Are They Called ‘Horse Chestnuts’?

The infamous seeds can be found under the horse chestnut tree, which was introduced to Britain in the 16th century. Prior to this, the fruits of the trees were used as stimulants, which were fed to horses in a bid to achieve a healthy, shiny coat, hence the name ‘Horse Chestnut’.

The popular and highly competitive game of conkers only began mid way through the 18th century. Before that, a similar game was played with hazelnuts and snail shells.

In order to play this traditional, age-old game today, you must firstly get out there and find your most solid conker. (Those that sink in a bowl of water are the best!) Make a hole in your conker, thread through some string, knot it at one end, and that’s you all set up for the game!

How to Win

The goal is to shatter your opponent’s conker as it dangles off the string from their hand. You take your aim by wrapping the string around your hand, drawing the conker back like a bow, and firing the conker like an arrow with your free hand. If you miss, you get two more goes and if the strings become tangled, the first player to shout ‘snags’ gets a bonus shot.

The person to destroy their competitor’s conker wins the game.

Some of these techniques include boiling the seed in vinegar water, cooking them in the oven, covering them in transparent nail polish and even putting glue inside of them. These methods however are generally frowned upon, from school yards to the world championships and can be regarded as cheating.

If you fancy your chances as a conker champion, it’s time to start practising.

If not, and you just get left with piles about your house from the kids, you can alternatively use them as insect deterrents. Putting them in wardrobes will help you get rid of fabric munching moths and when placed in the corners of rooms, they act as an effective spider repellent.

Our ‘Warren’ hens forage through the garden waste and start the composting process.

The ‘Super Marmande’ tomatoes have been superb.

Earlier this year I recruited four lovely young girls to help with my composting.

At the time they didn’t realise what they were getting into and neither did I. The girls in discussion are my classic, brown ‘Warren’ hens. Whilst my main compost bins were being refurbished and out of use, I decided to throw all my garden waste into the chicken run which is next to the compost bins knowing they would eat what they want and then scratch and forage for the worms and other soil life that would be attracted by the decaying vegetation.

They also contribute their nutrient-rich manure to the process – speeding up decomposition and adding greater fertility. The girls have done such a superb job that I have now adopted them into my composting routine. As a result, I have modified the compost bins so they can be accessed from both front and rear (previously, the bins could only be accessed from one side). The rear side of the bins is next to the chicken run, so partially decayed materials produced by the chickens can readily be added to the bins. The front side of the bins face the garden, which enables grass cuttings, hedge clippings and other fresh materials from the garden to be added with ease. It also makes it more convenient to harvest compost and take it straight back out to the garden. Materials from each side of the bins are added to the heap in

alternate layers; each layer is lightly sprinkled with my ‘Quick Return’ (QR) compost activator. Usually, my compost takes up to eight weeks at this time of year, however, with the help of the chickens, this has been slashed to just over four.

Nature’s Thieves

As the summer draws to an end, the garden is producing an abundance to eat and enjoy. There is also plenty to look forward to with the rich colours and produce of autumn. This is a time when I like to reflect on how the garden has fared over the season so far.

Unfortunately, the slugs, snails, mice, rabbits, rats, pigeons and pheasants have enjoyed my garden produce more than I would have liked. Two successive plantings of sweet peas and two sowings of peas have been devoured by various culprits, leaving a meagre few stems which I think they left as a cruel joke. The rabbits, which we don’t normally get, enjoyed my leeks and various ornamentals to my utter despair. But I can’t blame it all on the pests - bitter cucumbers have resulted due to my planting a rogue cucumber plant with male and female flowers. If the male flowers are left on, they cross pollinate with the females producing bitter fruit. The male flowers need to be removed daily which is tedious and time consuming.

The best bet is to plant all female varieties.

Tomatoes - From Summer Glut to Winter Treat

On the up side, the ‘Super Marmande’ beef steak tomatoes have been superb - juicy and full of flavour and less prone to splitting than the smaller cherry type ‘Gardener’s Delight’ which I usually grow. The sheer weight of tomatoes has snapped the support strings twice now so I will be using a stronger twine in future. A glut has ensued, so to use up surplus toms, I am using a technique recommended by a neighbour. The toms are slow roasted in a cool oven over a day until all the excess moisture is removed.

Last year saw the sad loss of our guelder rose tree (viburnum opulus).

However, disaster has been turned to success with the planting of two fabulous clematis: ‘Voluceau’ has large burgundy flowers with attractive yellow stamens; ‘Comtesse du Bouchard’ has an abundance of rose pink coloured flowers with creamy yellow stamens. In less than a year since they were planted, they have half covered the skeletal remains of the tree with their fine foliage and flowered profusely since the end of May.

Pots Appreciated

I’d like to say a great big thank-you to all the people who have brought along their used plant pots to our nursery over the last two years. It really makes environmental and economic sense and I am thoroughly grateful to you all. Even though we have pots coming out of our ears now, please do continue to bring them and I will get more time over the winter to sort through them. However, I do wish manufacturers would standardise on pot sizes – it would make life a lot easier!

Tyne Valley Talent Jenna Moore Jenna Moore’s early experiences of art could have been shattered forever when her art teacher stated her style of drawing was not ‘particularly good’.

Later, Jenna was diagnosed with Aspergers and now self-taught Jenna interprets the world through the eyes of someone on the autistic spectrum.

Prudhoe-based Jenna’s artwork is a representation of how she sees shapes and colours, favouring a vibrant palette as opposed to subtle or realistic shades of colour. She uses fragmentation and heavy lines to define her work. Texture is a huge part of Jenna’s portfolio, with oils and acrylics dominating her choice of medium.

Founded by Neil Blakeburn, with over 15 years’ experience Ochiltree Bespoke Joinery specialise in the manufacture of bespoke wooden windows and doors. Based in Hexham, we cover the wider area including Newcastle upon Tyne, Carlisle, Durham and the Scottish Borders. All our products are made to measure and built with exceptional craftsmanship using high-quality timber.

Passion and Persistence

Over 15 years’ experience manufacturing bespoke timber windows and doors at competitive prices.

Jenna identifies with the works of Picasso and his passion for shapes and design over realism and admires the resilience of Van Gough. He continued painting despite his illness and the indifference of those around him.

Jenna’s autism makes it difficult to interact with others, but the joy her work brings to people is undeniable. Her efforts to quash the opinion of that teacher when she was younger have not been easy. Jenna herself will admit to learning everything as she goes and sometimes getting it wrong the first time, but who doesn’t learn from their mistakes?

here has been a lacemaking class in Corbridge since 1984, meeting first in the WI Hut, but now well established in the Parish Hall. Initially most of the lace made was traditional bobbin lace worked in white or neutral tones; now the lacemakers are exploring a wide range of techniques (including many varieties of bobbin lace, needle lace, tatting, crochet, knitting and Carrickmacross) and experimenting with a wide variety of non-traditional and coloured yarns. This 3-D piece - ‘Let’s Celebrate, the whole brood hatched’ - was the group’s entry in this year’s international competition organised by the Lace Guild.

The class is informal, meeting roughly fortnightly from

10am to 1pm on Wednesday mornings with members coming from across the Tyne Valley. (Cost £8 a session) Beginners and experienced lacemakers are equally welcome. Conversations within the class range across numerous topics, mainly textile related, but just as likely to include well-tried recipes or where to find a good fencer.

The tutor, Gil Dye, is an experienced lace teacher. Her particular interest is very early bobbin lace, however she has the knowledge to introduce the basics of many other lace techniques and is keen to encourage individuals to develop their own ideas and skills.

Haltwhistle Autumn Walking Festival 2016 The teams of volunteers who organise the Haltwhistle Walking Festival

are celebrating being the runners-up in the final of the North East Rural Awards. There was very stiff competition in the Tourism and Hospitality category so they were delighted to be one of three finalists. The winners were Bamburgh Castle. “We are so pleased to have been nominated for the award and for such a small business as ours to be in the final short list”, said John Johnson, who, along with Tony and Marie Miller attended the awards ceremony at Linden Hall on July 7th.

Now the volunteers are busy organising times to walk all the routes for the Autumn Festival (October 1st – 9th). We are always excited when the programme is published, said Marj Baillie, who handles publicity and the website for the festival. Booking started on August 1st. Some walks book up immediately, but there is always room for everyone who wants to come. “I look at the programme and want to go on all the walks,” she said “but that is just not possible!”

The most challenging walks are very popular. Over the first weekend there is a 2 day walk in Wainwright’s footsteps on his famous 1938 Pennine Journey.

The walks are from Westgate to Blanchland and Blanchland to Hexham. For the second weekend, a 2 day walk called the Cumbrian Classic has been devised. It includes Hartside, Cross Fell, Garrigill, the Nent Valley and ends in Alston. Experienced walkers with a good level of fitness will enjoy these walks.

There are plenty of walks for those who do not wish to challenge themselves as much as this. Shorter walks include the Dirt Pot Circular, Bronze Age stones (Holing Crag and Caw Gap), The First Boy Scouts, King Water Valley and the intriguingly titled “Who was the fearsome Frank Stokoe?”.

Special Interest walks this time are Archaeology, Fungi, Lanercost Priory, Discovering Bellingham and The History of Haltwhistle Burn. During these walks there will be extra time to stop and look and learn. Haltwhistle artist, Sue Moorhouse, has produced a series of paintings of Haltwhistle Burn and these will be on show for walkers to see and purchase.

Haltwhistle Walking Festival prides itself on the tag line “More than just a walk” and the 23 walks this autumn will all prove that to be true.

FRIENDS OF KIRKLEY HALL Friends of Kirkley Hall will hold their AGM on Wednesday 7 September when the speaker will be David Stebbings, Conservation Officer from the charity Butterfly Conservation.
