Time waits for no man they say and it seems to me that this roller coaster of life just gets faster and faster. Xmas just around the corner but don’t worry it will be summer soon. Joking aside there does seem to be a lot of worry out there which isolates us within ourselves and community as a whole. One thing I’ve noticed is people don’t say hello to each other anymore? A little energy exchange of positive vibes to a stranger is good for all concerned and reconnects us too.

So in the true spirit of Xmas give a little and say hello / morning / afternoon etc to a passer by and see how it makes you feel?

Building Natural Immunity Part 1, A brief history of disease Why do some people get sick from viruses and bacteria yet others who are exposed to the very same pathogen remain healthy? Even in the worst outbreaks of ‘contagious’ disease such as bubonic plague there were many that died but others who survived even when they had shared the same household as the afflicted.

Louis Pasteur, creator of the ‘germ theory’ later admitted: “the germ is nothing; the soil is everything”. So, what he’s saying here is that for disease to flourish, the environment of the host must be conducive to support the pathogen. In other words, if your immune system is weakened you will be more susceptible to disease and infection.

We often have a rose tinted romantic view of the 1800’s, a time of Jane Austen’s opulent lifestyles, country estates and beautiful countryside.

The reality in fact was far from this portrait facade. For the majority of people, life was hard and unforgiving. Many people lived in poverty and in vile, unsanitary and cramped conditions. Food was nutrient poor and often contaminated, whilst drinking water was full of effluent compromising animal and human waste. Disease was rife and life expectancy short. Many diseases including typhoid, cholera, dysentery, typhus fever, diphtheria, pertussis, scarlet fever and TB were borne of filth and malnutrition. Sickness and death arising from measles and smallpox infection were extremely commonplace and yellow fever infected mosquitoes would frequently be seen smothering the coffins of the dead.

The mention of polio builds images of paralysis, iron lungs, and heavy braces. Paralytic polio became an epidemic disease in the early 1900’s, even though the incidence of disease from natural, wild polio infection was low. Before 1958, ‘polio’ became an umbrella description for many other diseases and toxic influences, all of which cause paralysis - these include: enteroviruses (eg: coxsackie, ECHO), congenital syphilis, arsenic, DDT poisoning, lead poisoning, transverse myelitis, Guillian Barre syndrome, provocation of limb paralysis by intramuscular injections, and hand, foot and mouth disease. The medical literature describes how many viruses can cause ‘polio like’ illness - Franklin Roosevelt, commonly thought to have suffered from polio, is now believed to have been suffering from Guillian Barre syndrome instead.

The real decline of polio after 1958 was due to a redefining of what constituted a diagnosis. When the medicinal use of arsenic declined and DDT disappeared, so did many cases of ‘polio’. The iron lung still exists, but in much more discreet ventilator form for a condition called acute flaccid paralysis, which was previously listed under the umbrella of ‘polio’.

Puerperal fever cost many women their lives and many babies were left orphaned and vulnerable to disease. A lack of hand washing amongst physicians as they moved from autopsying cadavers to delivering babies lead to epidemic proportions of infection. Whilst the advent of antibiotics saved many lives with those suffering from this dreadful condition, had common sense prevailed, the implementation of simple hygiene practices would have, in the first instance prevented many deaths.

Smallpox was the first disease where vaccination was implemented in the hope it would eradicate the disease. In 1853 a law was passed for compulsory small pox vaccination of every baby within 3 months of birth and penalties were severe in cases of opposition. Smallpox vaccines were highly contaminated containing putrid ingredients with many recipients suffered severe ill effects, secondary infections and even death was a common side-effect. More people died from smallpox in the 20 years after strict compulsory laws than in the 20 years prior.

The people of Leicester however, rebelled against this infringement of human rights and turned their backs on smallpox vaccination and instead, in 1885 successfully implemented their own plan of sanitation, hygiene, and isolation. Whilst smallpox continued to rage through the rest of the country, the public health measures put into place by the people of Leicester resulted in a dramatic decrease in the incidence of smallpox.

A new public health movement started in England and significant efforts were made to improve sanitary conditions starting with the construction of the London sewerage system which began in 1859. By the late 1800’s

London was transformed from being a city of filth to one where basic sewerage and clean water were part of city life. By the early 1900’s dirty water supply was addressed through chlorination which virtually eliminated waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery.

Diphtheria raged amongst overcrowded and dirty living conditions however, Dr James Gordon Cumming in his 1922 article in the Journal of American Medical Association stated that the population needed to acquire an intuitive knowledge of hygiene, sanitation and basic immune support and that this would eliminate the threat of diphtheria.

When we look at history and epidemiological studies we can clearly see that the most significant public health measures put into place to combat disease were clean drinking water, implementation of sewerage disposal, improved hygiene practices and better nutrition. Diseases such as typhoid, small pox, scarlet fever, pertussis, measles, and diphtheria decreased most significantly with improvements in sanitation long before other any other public health measures were introduced. Furthermore, epidemiological charts found at the Office for National Statistics in London show that the incidence of all these diseases had literally almost ‘flat lined’ before the introduction of vaccines.

There were no vaccines for scurvy, typhoid, typhus, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, and cholera and yet these diseases continued to decline (which by this point was statistically miniscule) at the same rate as smallpox, polio, measles, pertussis and diphtheria.

History is history and statistics are statistics – what is clear from all of this is that sanitation, improved living conditions and good nutrition are significant in reducing the incidence of disease.by allowing the immune system to function more optimally.

Thankfully, we live in an age where we can enjoy a standard of living that was beyond so many in the 19th century, we have vastly better nutritional options and we have many more healthy lifestyle choices available to us than ever before. Ironically, even with all the modern advancements in medicine and technology, we are now seeing a epidemic of allergies, autoimmunity, inflammation and hyperimmune responses.

Ryton Festival was founded in 1935 by a few local people as a one day event for locally based solo and choral singers. In the intervening years it has grown a lot and now caters for singers, pianists, instrumentalists, choirs, verse speakers and many forms of drama. Always moving forward the festival has recently introduced pipe organ classes, which are fittingly held in Ryton’s historic Holy Cross Church. From its one-day beginnings the festival now spans four extended weekends in February and March, drawing on a wide catchment area covering North-East Counties and Cumbria.

Where are we heading?

Christmas is coming, that means it’s Party Season.

If you need to make your feet Party Feet!

Do you know what’s in Room 101? No, I don’t mean the BBC TV series! I first read George Orwell’s ‘1984’ at school, when its setting was still about 20 years in the future. Along with other so-called dystopian novels depicting scary prospects, such as Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’, it jumped right up the bestseller lists after the Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s election last year as people tried to imagine what lay ahead.

The question of our direction and where it leads can be asked, not only about politics and economics, but also of modern developments in science and technology, especially in biomedical, genetic and neuroscience research where there has been such rapid progress in knowledge and capability.

A topic of particular concern to many people is artificial intelligence, automation and robotics. A recent article in The Sunday Times points out that robots can already run factory production lines and lay bricks much faster than humans, we’re now seeing the development of driverless cars, and drones are becoming commonplace in the skies, but this is just the beginning as automation moves increasingly into shopping, banking, transport and communications – indeed, almost every part of our lives. I remember arriving years ago at a fog-bound Newcastle Airport in one of the first planes to be fitted with an automatic landing system, and what a relief it was not to be diverted, along with all the other flights that day, to another destination. And it’s not just the routine tasks: robots have also been shown to outperform skilled surgeons in keyhole operations, and they can make decisions very fast – which is fine as long as they’re given the right information.

While there’s much to be welcomed here, the threat in many people’s minds is to their jobs, while others worry about safety and security: a hacked computer is bad enough, but what about a hacked driverless car – or a drone, especially one fitted with weapons? Are we facing the prospects of a real-life ‘Terminator’ or ‘The Matrix’? The Sunday Times article quotes a large group of technology pioneers – the very people who have been driving these innovations – in an open letter to the United Nations calling for a ban on killer robots: “Once this Pandora’s Box is opened, it will be hard to close.”

Autumnal Treats It’s a typical autumn day; very blustery with horizontal showers and fallen leaves in every nook and cranny. As I wander around the garden there are still plenty of things to keep the mind and body stimulated. With fork and trug in hand, I set out to harvest veggies for Sunday lunch. The swedes have done pretty well, perhaps a little too closely planted, but a nice specimen the size of a football ends up in the trug. It looks like we’ve got a good crop of parsnips with a few popping their white heads proud of the soil, though in theory we should leave these to sweeten up by refraining from harvesting until after the first frosts. However, there are plenty to go at, so several parsnips are plucked from the ground. This year I have grown ‘Cylindra’ beetroots which have been fabulous, reaching the proportions of a mini can of pop and still retaining a lovely sweet flavour. The second batch I sowed in July haven’t quite reached the same size but are just as sweet and truly appreciated. Carrot sowings of mixed varieties have been a bit of a failure with many being lost to the slugs in the early stages.

Notably, the ‘Chantenay’ varieties fared best and have been worth the effort. We’ve had a few good red cabbages which have remained relatively unscathed by caterpillar and slug (even though we don’t use slug pellets) with just a couple left now – they’ve been a real hit with our children who much prefer them to other cabbages and kale. So the aforementioned veggies,together with some of the spuds and smallish onions harvested earlier in the season, are harvested, washed, peeled and chopped then added straight into the roasting tray within 20 minutes of leaving the soil.

You can’t get fresher than that! After roasting for half an hour, half a can of pear cider is poured over the roasting veg – this is boiled off leaving behind a rich sweet residue to coat the vegetables which are gently roasted for another hour or so. Meanwhile I write my article for TVE… But it’s not just the veg patch that’s thriving. During late spring I created a new border where I planted a range of hybrid candelabra primroses as well as the golden primula ‘Bulleyana’. Well these didn’t fare very well

at all after a late frost knocked everything back. So I dug them up and replanted them in a shadier and damp spot where they would be better off anyway. Replacement planting came in the shape of some seedling wallflowers I had grown myself from seed. In they went but several weeks later nothing much was happening. I needed some colour and I needed it fast! Astrantias were the solution. A mixed range including pale cream astrantia major, the deep lustrous maroon of A. ‘Hadspen Blood’and the soft pink of the mesmerising A. ‘Sparkling Stars’ were planted in the gaps between the wall flowers and soon came away giving us a lovely show for the summer just in time for our NGS open garden day. The astrantias went on and on and are still in flower! Meanwhile the wall flowers have bushed up beautifully and a couple are just coming into bloom right now. The majority will be ready to give us a brilliant show in the spring after which the astrantias should take over nicely as they fade away. So it should all work out pretty well, I hope!

Another project has come to fruition in the garden too. This time it’s one of our children’s inspirational ideas which was to create a ‘Grassy Garden’ which is a mini garden surrounded by tall grasses all of which is a part of the main border in the garden. The idea being that you enter the mini garden and take a seat within the shelter and ambience created by the grasses. In effect a garden with a garden. The project was started last year with the planting of the zebra grass, miscanthus sinensis‘ Zebrinus’, which were cuttings from existing clumps dotted around the garden.

Unfortunately the rabbits got a taste for them over the winter and virtually devoured them before I could get rabbit defences in place. More cuttings were put in the ground this spring but they were slow to come.

An arch was constructed from concrete reinforcing mesh and bamboo canes. The seat was created using a cut down railway sleeper supported by a reinforcing mesh framework. In the last few weeks, with the aid of some warm southerly winds, the grasses have still been growing and have just about reached the height we want them to blend in with the arch.

Persistence has paid off resulting in a lovely new garden.

As I walked by the damp garden earlier I noticed that the clump of water avens, geum rivale was treating us to a beautiful autumn display with their delicate, downturned nodding flowers. Gardens can be full of pleasant surprises!

I think I’d better check on how those roasties are getting on…. Happy Gardening!

Solitude.

The moon still hangs in a sky of indigo; quiet, still and full. Yet, already, the inky night is changing to a warm, pinky-horizoned dawn. Silhouettes of birds dance above me. The blackbirds, sparrows, jackdaws, pigeons and crows. A distant honking draws my attention upwards: A v-shaped flock of geese, en-route to somewhere-not-here. For a moment, I am memorised. Then, a splash of a fish – perhaps a trout? - tugs me back to the riverbank with a surge of joy and I watch, in awe, as ducks gracefully land, synchronized, on the surface of the water. The sky is softer now, and the moon is fading as the promise of a new sun rises behind the tree line on the other side of the riverbank. I turn, just to glimpse a flash of turquoise – a kingfisher – and walk contentedly back to the car. I have been walking for nearly an hour and haven’t seen another human being. It’s been wonderful.

I’ve been alone. Very much alone. And this is how I am most of the time.

This is perhaps Wordsworth’s Bliss of Solitude. Not loneliness. But being happily alone. The two words do not mean the same thing: Loneliness invokes feelings of being alone and not liking it. You can feel lonely in a room full of people, however you cannot be solitary in a crowd. Many people indeed love solitude and do not feel lonely. Nevertheless, loneliness is certainly not good for our wellbeing – as evidenced by the recent Campaign to End Loneliness. In 2016, the Scottish government published research suggesting that loneliness was worse for life expectancy and wellbeing than poverty or bad housing. Loneliness reduces fitness, shortens life expectancy and increases the risk of depression, heart disease, diabetes and raised blood pressure. As solitude commentator, Sara Maitland, underlines, there is much less evidence on the impact of being alone (but not lonely), but what does exist suggests that self-chosen solitude is very good for you, both physically and mentally.

So why does the pursuit of solitude create such anxiety, distrust or unease in so many people? Is time alone really so unnatural or sinister?

How have we arrived, in the relatively prosperous developed world, or at least, at a cultural moment which values autonomy, personal freedom, fulfilment and human rights, and above all, individualism, more highly than ever before in human history, but at the same time these autonomous, free, self-fulfilling individuals are terrified of being alone with themselves?

Sara Maitland (2014) How to be Alone As Maitland highlights, we apparently believe that our bodies are our own to do what we please with them, but we do not want to be on our own with these precious possessions. Our society values high self-esteem as proof of emotional wellbeing, however many of us do not want to be intimate with this admirable and desirable individual. We see moral and social conventions as inhibitions on our personal freedoms, and yet we are frightened of anyone who goes away from the crowd and is somewhat ‘different’. The rise of social media has given us a platform to creatively display our Instagram-filtered prized bodies, our desirable version of our ‘perfect’ selves, our individuality and personal, singular voice. Yet, we tend to be suspicious of anyone who uses one of the most clearly established methods of developing that creativity: solitude. In short, we value our personal freedom and autonomy, and believe we are unique, special and deserving of happiness – but we don’t want to be alone with ourselves.

Some people find being alone deeply liberating and pleasurable. Others find it exactly the opposite. Some people are introverted and re-charge their batteries by spending time alone, while others are more extroverted and unwind, relax and ‘re-charge’ by being in the company of others.

We’re all different, but there appears to be a lack of awareness in society of how important time alone can be for at least some of us.

Although not a parent myself, I remember, and am very grateful for, how my own mother purposefully never ‘sent me to my room’ as a form of punishment, saying that time alone in my own company shouldn’t be seen as something punitive. In fact, for me, time alone has always been quite the opposite, and as an only child I grew up delighting in my own company and imagination, often doodling, writing, reading, making, daydreaming or being ‘alone’ with the four-legged one. As Maitland asks, perhaps we may benefit as a society if we, as parents, caregivers, teachers, employers, colleagues, neighbours and friends helped people to be more skilled at enjoying solitude and were more aware of the importance of ‘alone-time’ for, at the very least, some people?

What, therefore, does Wordsworth’s bliss of solitude mean? Over the

centuries, when people have explicitly practised solitude and reflected on their experience, there have been surprisingly consistent reports of what it might offer those who seek it out. Maitland summarises these benefits as 5 overlapping, non-exclusive, categories: 1) A deeper consciousness of oneself (intrapersonal connectedness) 2) A deeper attunement to nature 3) A deeper relationship with the transcendent (transpersonal connectedness) 4) Increased creativity 5) An increased sense of freedom How can we experience these 5 wonderful benefits of solitude in our increasingly-hectic, multi-tasking, switched-on, screen-focused, instantmessaging, to-do-list busy lives? In my last article I spoke about the benefits of disconnecting and unplugging from our 24/7 world of being online, particularly the demanding nature of the smartphone. With these present reflections on solitude in mind, I’ll leave this latest piece with the following suggestions for seeking a moment of stillness and alone-time: •

As described at the start of this article, an early walk before breakfast when the world is still sleepy A quiet cup of tea, lovingly made, with just your (non-judgmental) thoughts for company.

Cloudwatching Driving somewhere quiet – preferably in nature – and sitting with a flask of something hot, something delicious to nibble and savouring the views and silence.

Getting up early and establishing a routine of ‘alone-time’, even if just for a few moments each day. This may include writing a gratitude journal; savouring that first cup of coffee of the day; standing outside to watch how the sky changes colour as dawn approaches or a few gentle yoga stretches.

Going to a coffee shop now and again and sitting alone by a window, savouring your time and watching the world go by.

A candle-lit bath, relaxing music and a really good book.

A solo trip to a favourite museum, gallery, bookshop or cinema.

A wild, windy, blow-the-cobwebs away solo walk – plenty to choose from around here but Stanhope moor is highly recommended… …as is Hadrian’s Wall at dawn.

Leaving the office and sitting outside/in the car to enjoy a quiet, away- from-the-screen lunch.

Feeding the birds – taking 5 minutes to sit with a cup of tea at your kitchen window and delight in our feathered friends.

Doodling – an empty notepad, some coloured pens, some cosy cushions and permission to simply play.

Gardening - with just the worms for company.

Running, jogging, walking – whenever and wherever suits you best.

No watches, no competitions with yourself or others, no personal bests to beat – just moving your body and enjoying some time alone with yourself.

Reading – losing yourself in the pages of a book.

Music – the joy of listening to music or playing an instrument alone.

Cooking, baking, alone-time-with-pinny.

Free-writing. Sitting alone, somewhere peaceful, and writing for 3-5 minutes without stopping – a wonderfully creative and therapeutic writing-for-wellbeing technique.

Meditation – cultivating the habit of being still with yourself for a few moments each day.

Father and Son Frosty Mornings Prudhoe Artist and Gallery Owner Paul Stangroom Talks of his Father’s Influence on his Paintings

I painted beside my father Lawrence Stangroom from being small.

Lawrence was a professional illustrator and college lecturer by day and fine artist on weekends and holidays, he and my mother Joyce having a large family to support (myself, brother Ian, and sisters Kay, Lynn and Janet). We even share themes for our work, such as Northumbrian frosty mornings. Lawrie could paint any subject.

Lawrence worked on architectural drawings for Manchester Airport, Scottish and Newcastle Brewery, Vaux, Stadium of Light, St James’ Park, Beamish Robbs (now Beales) and many more. We worked together occasionally on his commissions, often swapping drawing boards. He was my friend and my father. We’d often chat about ideas and techniques over a pub quiz and a leisurely pint.

My father saw this view of fields in Fatfield, near Penshaw, when we were out walking together – I was just seven. He took a good look at the snowy landscape and painted ‘Frosty Morning’ later. He may well have returned and sketched the scene on his own before commencing painting.

This Xmas

My method when painting ‘Frosty Morning, Knitsley’ was different. I was visiting my partner Alison, walking along the bridal path near Knitsley, Consett. I crossed an old bridge and for one particular moment, seconds before the sun melted the snow, the blades of grass and the frost on the branches were sparkling. There was a deer in the glen nearby. After capturing this on camera, I painted it at home.

I now realise how lucky I am to have had a grounding in traditional methods from such a talented man. In the early 50s, Lawrence went to the Royal College of Art to study etching and engraving (MA). I’ve heard that his engravings were excellent, but I’ve never seen a single one. I’m always hoping someone will come forward one day with one, just for me to take a look at.

NEW CHRISTMAS THEATRE IN PRUDHOE Mortal Fools, a Prudhoe-based charity, has secured funding from Arts Council England for a professional theatre production in the centre of Prudhoe. This Christmas, a newlyvacant shop unit on the High Street will be temporarily transformed into Front Street Theatre, a fully-equipped studio theatre, and become home to a family production, Melva, from mid-December to January.

Melva is aimed at children aged 7-11 and is one girl’s adventure story of battling through her worries to find out what she’s capable of, taking some inspiration from the grisly world of Roald Dahl. Kiz Crosbie, Mortal Fools’ Artistic Director says, “As a company, we want all the theatre we make to be about important things. It’s a great way to explore issues which affect all our lives in a playful, fun and entertaining way.”

To make sure the play is well-suited to the target audience, artists from Melva’s creative team have been working with local schools. Melva’s writer, Northumberland-born Danielle Burn, said, “We’ve had so much fun working with the young people in schools. Their ideas have been totally brilliant and have really inspired my writing and the development of this play.”

Mortal Fools has years of experience transforming community venues, like village halls, into theatre spaces as part of their flourishing youth theatre programme, Tyne Valley Youth Theatre (www.tvyt.org.uk), which runs regular youth theatre groups for children and young people aged 5-19 in Riding Mill. This term, together with a group from Ovingham Middle School, the youth theatre groups will have the chance to perform their original pieces at Front Street Theatre.

Mortal Fools believe that great theatre should be for everyone, as Kiz explains. “We know great theatre can be made anywhere. This year we want to create opportunities for people in the Prudhoe area to have exciting theatre on their doorstep which doesn’t cost a fortune.

Bakethin Nature Reserve is wrapped around the northern edges of Kielder Water and was created when Kielder dam was constructed in 1979. This is the most publically accessible reserve managed by Northumberland Wildlife Trust at Kielder, offering a diverse range of habitats including open water, wetland, woodland and grassland, and providing a haven for a diverse range of wildlife.

singing in the treetops as they begin courtship. In spring, the reserve can give views of osprey, merlin and goshawk during their courtship, with the viaduct offering an excellent vantage point.

The shallow water margins also offer valuable spawning grounds for the common frog and palmate newt and there is a healthy fish population including trout, minnow, eels and stone loach.

Adder and common lizard are regularly recorded and the ponds near the viaduct also provide excellent habitat for amphibians and dragonflies.

One of the other special features of Bakethin Nature Reserve is the Kielder viaduct. Built in 1862, the viaduct was fortunately preserved when the valley was flooded to create the reservoir.

Up close, it’s easy to appreciate the intricacy of the skew arch structure, where every stone is differently shaped. You can walk both under and over the viaduct, and some of my favourite views of wildlife at Bakethin have been around this structure, including many fleeting glances of the unmistakeable blue flash of a kingfisher. People do see otters around here, although I haven’t been lucky enough yet.

Wildfowl are best viewed during the winter months. Visitors include pochard, tufted duck, goldeneye, goosander, mallard and teal. Early and late in the year there are sightings of whooper swans and barnacle geese en route to or from the Arctic. In the late winter, crossbill can often be seen and heard

The new Bakethin Hide offers a wonderful opportunity to view the reserve’s wildlife from a unique and attractive waterside viewpoint with dual vantage points across the water and into the forest. The design draws on themes from the existing architecture and artwork around Kielder including the darkened, charcoal colour of the building’s façade.

The ‘forest view’ pod has tall windows which give dramatic views of the close-up forest floor to its high canopy. Wood piles on the ground harbour all sorts of small forest creatures from toads, frogs and adders to hedgehogs, while red squirrels can sometimes be seen darting higher in the branches. The hide, which was designed and built by Masters students from Newcastle University has taken about two years from initial design to completion, and replaces an old bird watching hide that had occupied this site for the past 20 years.

To make it easier for visitors to view some of this wonderful wildlife, we’ve been working alongside our partner organisations and Newcastle University School of Architecture to provide exciting new structures at Bakethin.

Bakethin Hide consists of two separate but adjoining rooms with distinctively different ‘feels’. The ‘lake view’ pod is more traditional in design, with sash windows allowing for beautiful views out across Bakethin reservoir and onto the osprey nesting platform that we hope will be used by a pair in years to come.

Companionship services

This service can be from a few hours to a full day of shopping, attending you to appointments. Having a cuppa and a chat to playing games and completing cross words. We offer a reading, walking service within this time. Or having your washed and dried, nails painted whatever you would like to do.

‘Hop’ into bed for a good night’s sleep Last time we saw how spicing up food with turmeric may help lift our mood, today we see how an ingredient with a bitter taste well known to beer drinkers helps us sleep.

Hip Hops A number of sedative plants are shown by science to help -

safely and without side effects. Here we focus on one soporific plant which makes a beautiful addition to your garden or back yard and a striking seasonal decoration indoors. The hop vine has a marked relaxing and tranquillizing effect on the central nervous system and is used extensively in herbal medicine (often in combination with valerian) for insomnia.

What goes on in the brain? Brain mechanisms in sleep and

dreaming are complex and many signals are implicated, the best known is melatonin. Another, adenosine, builds up in the brain during the day to make us feel sleepy. Adenosine inhibits wakefulness processes in the body (involving other signals like norepinephrine, acetylcholine and serotonin) and is reduced by caffeine. Also involved are GABA and opiates, cannabinioids and dopamine - agents that boost these brain signals often induce sleep at lower doses, and intensify dreaming at higher doses.

Humulus lupulus About the plant Native to Europe, western Asia and North America, and grown commercially all over Europe, this is a vigorous climber which reaches great heights. It has coarse-toothed, heart-shaped leaves and distinctive cone-like greenish flowers which are gathered when fully ripe. Hop is in the same family as cannabis (Cannabaceae), which is also sleep-inducing.

History and folklore The Romans ate the young shoots in spring

in the same way as we eat asparagus - and they’re becoming popular today too. Named lupulus from Latin lupus (wolf), because it strangles any plant it climbs up, as the wolf does a sheep. The English name “hop” comes from the Anglo-Saxon hoppan (to climb). Described by the British Parliament as “a wicked weed” in the 16th century, hop is added to beer as a preservative and for flavouring. In plant medicine it is used as a hypnotic and sedative and for restlessness, tension, excitability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and spasms.

What scientists say

Human studies Most controlled studies of hop are in combination

with another clinically effective sedative plant, valerian (Valeriana officinalis). A review of trials (meta-analysis) concluded this combination is effective in treating insomnia (and is effective in a single dose, more so than valerian alone) and equal to a benzodiazepine and antihistamine for temporary insomnia. A combination of hop, valerian and passionflower (another calming plant) was found to be as safe and as effective as the sedative Zolpidem. Hop, with lavender oil, lemon balm and oat altered electrical brain activity consistent with a state of relaxation. As a nonalcoholic beer, hop decreased the time taken to fall asleep, decreased anxiety and capsules, in a controlled trial, decreased depression and stress.

Several studies also show benefits for menopausal symptoms, which can disturb sleep.

In the lab Hop depresses the central nervous system, increasing the

brain’s calming neurotransmitter (GABA). It also affects brain sleep signals such as melatonin and adenosine, as well as the serotonin (mood-boosting) signal. In lab models hop increases pentobarbital sleep-enhancement and

ACTIVE NORTHUMBERLAND HEALTH WALKS All walks are FREE, if you wish to join just turn up a few minutes before the walk starts and make yourself known to the leader (the one with the register!) The walks are graded for difficulty but are aimed at people with health conditions so are suitable for almost anyone. Sensible footwear and clothing are advised if the weather conditions on the day. Some small change may be needed as some groups go for coffee after the walk - this is NOT compulsory!
