Fat, Fatigued & Fed-Up? “The Journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step” Do you know that most chronic illness in the UK today is due to PREVENTABLE lifestyle factors? Poor diet, inadequate exercise, bad posture habits, emotional and mental stress, poor sleeping patterns, accidents, incidents & falls weaken the body over time – eventually the body becomes overwhelmed and succumbs to debility and ill health. Do you have a family history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease or other chronic illness? Are you concerned about your current health status or where in fact it might be heading? Do you find it hard to stick to diets or implement positive lifestyle changes and maintain them? Do you have people who depend on you staying fit and well for many years from now? Do you know you need to do something about your health but just keep putting it off?

WE USE A MULTI THERAPUETIC APPROACH

So many ‘wellness’ programs are one dimensional: they are either just an exercise plan, just a diet plan or just a ‘changing behaviour’ program – our program is different, as we take a 3 pronged approach: Eat Well, Move Well & Think Well

WE MEASURE YOUR HEALTH TO MANAGE IT….

Most programs don’t have a means to truly measure progress. In our program we measure a range of biomarkers such as: Body composition (Fat mass, organ fat, water content, muscle mass & balance, muscle/fat ratio) Blood tests (complete blood fat analysis – heart disease risk, diabetic risk, complete thyroid panel, vitamins - B12, Folate, D, complete iron profile, liver function tests) Functional movement patterns (how coordinated and balanced are your movements) Postural spinal scanning/surface electromyography (to locate spinal weaknesses and imbalances) X-rays (if required, to better assess spinal, pelvic or peripheral joints)**only done at start of program**

THEN WE GIVE YOU A ‘WELLNESS SCORE’

This is your wellness ‘grade’ from collating all your biomarkers – we give you a score at the beginning of your program and another at the end!

Our Aligned to Wellness - Total Health Solutions Program incorporates: l l

Do you want to stay active and vital into old age?

l l

Are you concerned about your weight and associated health risks?

l l l

Are you lacking in energy, focus and drive?

l l

Are you simply overwhelmed with all the information out there and just don’t know where to start?

Don’t Despair, We Can Help! In just 9 weeks you can start turning your health around with a complete ‘metabolic reboot’ & become... Aligned to Wellness!

Chiropractic Care Bespoke Exercise Program Stretch Classes Core Strengthening Nutritional Counselling & Meal Plans Nutritional Supplementation Neuro-programming Better Sleep Advice Full Support Every Step of the Way

Lose weight, increase energy, think clearer, function better, improved health & wellbeing

A COMPLETE METABOLIC REBOOT!

All aspects of the assessments & program itself are ‘in house’. Our facilities including: exercise studio, parking, digital x-ray, InBody body composition, Myovision scanning, blood tests (finger prick)

What Charles Darwin didn’t know “What’s the difference between a pattern and a code?” This is a key question in Dan Brown’s latest novel “Origin”, with a theme of how life on earth began and where it is heading. According to the hero Robert Langdon, patterns occur everywhere in nature, but codes – by definition – must carry information. He goes on to say that codes are the deliberate inventions of intelligent consciousnesses. Some critics reckon this goes too far; for example, the development of spoken language, definitely a code in this sense, could hardly be said to have begun deliberately, though there’s certainly intelligence behind it. When Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution by natural selection in the mid-1850s, he based his ideas on natural variations in isolated species populations together with the results of other people’s deliberate selective breeding experiments. He drew conclusions, still largely accepted and further developed today, about what we now call genetic inheritance, but he had no idea what the actual physical mechanism of this inheritance was, because the modern science of genetics was unknown. The founder of genetics was Gregor Mendel, an Augustinian monk in what is now the Czech Republic. He carried out experiments with varieties of peas in his monastery garden at around the same time as Darwin was writing “On the Origin of Species”, worked out how certain characteristics were passed on, and coined the terms dominant and recessive to describe what we now call genes. His work was largely overlooked until the start of the 20th century. The genetic code, which is the information of heredity, is carried by the biological molecule DNA. It is an extremely long molecule with two external backbones of phosphate (related to bones and minerals) and sugar units twisted into a double helix – a shape rather like a spiral staircase or a curved ladder laid out on the slide of an enormously tall helterskelter. Each ladder rung connecting the phosphatesugar rails is a pair of small molecules called nucleobases, one attached to each rail. Although each molecule of human DNA has over 3 billion such base-pair rungs, there are

14

Telephone: 01661 836 960 Mobile: 07930 608 468

only 4 different bases, known as C, A, G, and T, the initial letters of their chemical names; and each rung is always a pairing of A with T, or C with G, never any other combination. This means a DNA molecule can make two identical copies by splitting down the middle of the rungs and each half assembling a matching set of bases on a new second rail. This is how your DNA reproduces itself and is passed on to your descendants. But the real power and significance of the genetic code is that the detailed sequence of bases controls how proteins are constructed from their small amino acid building blocks. Each of the 20 different amino acids in proteins corresponds to three successive bases along the DNA chain, for example CGA means glycine and CAT means histidine. One of the most remarkable features of this biological code is its efficiency: it uses only 4 characters, in contrast to the 20–30 characters in most western alphabets and thousands of characters in written Chinese. All humans share 99.9% of the same DNA sequence, a higher proportion than most other species. What we have in common identifies us as human, and the small differences are what make you unique (unless you’re an identical twin). The entire sequence of over 3 billion bases in the human genetic code was finally established in a huge research programme, the Human Genome Project, at the turn of the millennium. Its achievement is helping in the development of medical treatments for genetically inherited diseases. Some surprises came out of this work. Less than 2% of the DNA base sequence is actually used in sections that code for protein production (the genes). The function of much of the rest is still a mystery, though some provides self-repair mechanisms and other maintenance features. So, if the genetic code carries information for a purpose, does it imply deliberate design? As Robert Langdon says, “That’s the paradox.” The characters in Dan Brown’s “Origin” seem to be moving towards an odd position blending atheism with a mystical New Age spirituality and nature worship – is this true of the author too? The Director of the Human Genome Project at the time of its completion is less ambiguous in his viewpoint: Francis Collins, now the head of the US National Institutes of Health, moved from an atheist stance to a personal Christian faith largely as a result of his research in biology and medicine, and the developing story of DNA and the human genetic code confirmed him in this. Having begun with a Dan Brown quotation, I’ll end with one from President Bill Clinton, in the speech he and Francis Collins prepared together for the announcement of the first draft of the human genome in June 2000: “Today we are learning the language in which God created life”, to which Collins added “we have caught the first glimpse of our own instruction book, previously known only to God.”

LANDLORDS LET FROM ONLY £195 I wholeheartedly recommend Property Rung. I switched to Property Rung after just achieving 1 viewing with {Agent name protected} in 6 months. Property Rung did a wonderful brochure and made excellent suggestions, and we sold after a just a week for the full asking price. Michelle was so attentive to every detail and very quick to respond. She went above and beyond what we expected. Property Rung will be a force to be reckoned with in the North East, and other estate agents should beware. This is estate agency at its very best. Mrs C - Ryton All of the team at Property Rung have been fantastic, they have been professional and approachable, we would not hesitate in using them again. They are prompt in response to any query we might have had and have dealt with any issues, going above and beyond the call of duty, we have never experienced an estate agent like them, they are quite simply a one off, others should follow by there example. Mrs O - Ponteland “Having worked in the industry for many years we felt that it was time to improve current standards and evolve a new Estate Agency with our customers at the forefront of what we do. Our bespoke, personal service is tailored to our customers requirements, we do not believe one size fits all. Our aim for the sale or rental of any property is to achieve the best price in the shortest possible time – stress free. Successful marketing is key to this, so we use professional photography, eye-catching brochures & floor plans as standard. Although our service is bespoke our fees are extremely competitive at only 0.4% or a fixed fee of £820. We are rapidly becoming known for our exceptional service and low fees, why not contact us today to experience the difference yourself” Michelle Roper - Managing Director

The HSP

Do you feel like you reflect on things more than everyone else? Do you find yourself worrying about how other people feel? Do you prefer quiet, calm environments? Do you feel particularly in tune with nature and animals and re-charge your batteries by spending time alone? If so, you may be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP).

Rescuing trapped insects As a little girl I would sometimes go outside to play after dinner, but see a fly trapped against a window, desperately trying to get outside. Instead of passing it by, running outside to play, I’d find myself with a glass and piece of paper, intent on saving the poor insect, even if it meant ‘using up’ my allotted playing time before bed. No-one ever taught me to do this. It was just something ‘inside me’ that actually felt the suffering of others, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant in our big, busy, human-world. Similarly, as a child, I’d want to join my friends by going to Brownies after school, to participate in all the activities and feel like I ‘fitted in’. However, no matter how much I liked the idea of having fun in a group environment, I knew that the reality was very different. I craved my bedroom, my own company, my books, quiet doodling and time with Scampy, our beloved family rescue dog. Growing up, despite wanting to enjoy them, I often found big group activities or loud environments overwhelming and as a teenager I spent a lot of time pretending that my skin was a lot thicker than it really was. It wasn’t until I was in my thirties that I realised that I didn’t have to pretend to be anything else than what I already was – a highly sensitive person (HSP). What’s more, a growing body of research now exists about HSP traits and such studies have helped me to cultivate a lifestyle and way of appreciating life that embraces my HSP personality instead of it being the hindrance it felt like when I was growing up.

The evidence

The personality trait was first researched by Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D., in the early 1990s and it is estimated that 15-20% of the population are in fact HSP. Aron, who has written multiple studies and books on high sensitivity, including The Highly Sensitive Person, also developed a self-test to help determine if you are highly sensitive. While recent interest in introversion - driven largely by high-profile publications on the subject, including Susan Cain’s book Quiet, - has brought more awareness to personality traits that value less stimulation and higher sensitivity, Aron notes that highly sensitive people still tend to be considered the “minority.” But “minority” doesn’t have to be construed negatively - in fact, being highly sensitive carries a multitude of positive characteristics if we embrace our highly sensitive nature and, importantly, learn when to take a step back and re-charge our batteries away from environments that may be over-stimulating and overwhelming. Studies using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), provide physical evidence that brains of individuals who are “highly sensitive” respond more powerfully to emotional images than individuals who are not “highly sensitive”. This translates to an individual characterised as HSP showing higher levels of awareness and emotional responsiveness based on greater activity in the “mirror neuron system” and “anterior insula” areas of the brain. Biologists suggest that one possible explanation for this is that it offers a different and possibly complementary evolutionary survival strategy. It is important to point out that being highly sensitive is not something that needs “fixing”. It is a normal temperamental trait that people are born with. However, as I’ve found myself over the years, being part of a minority in modern society can sometimes be difficult: it can make you feel more vulnerable in situations which are aimed at extroversion or where it would be beneficial to be rather a little more thick-skinned. HSPs struggle, for example, with functioning in a society that values sensory overstimulation and a fast-paced lifestyle. They might find themselves working in an environment surrounded by people who are non-HSP and might find, for instance, an open-plan office with fluorescent lighting, noise and time pressure extremely uncomfortable or perpetually overstimulating. Other HSPs might struggle with being in a relationship with a partner who is not highly sensitive. Some HSPs may find it difficult to accept their sensitivity as it may make them feel helpless, vulnerable or disillusioned by the pace and apparent ‘insensitivity’ of modern life.

TAN DAWSO

S

• • • • • • • • •

HSPs tend to be easily startled and often feel overwhelmed by loud sensory input, violent films or large crowds HSPs tend to be more cautious when facing new situations HSPs are often highly conscientious and have a tendency to be perfectionistic HSPs are easily shaken and distressed by change. They also do less well in “multitasking” situations HSPs are often sensitive to loud noises, strong scents, coarse fabrics or bright lights (sirens, aeroplanes, fluorescent lighting etc.) HSPs tend to be “cooperative,” rather than “competitive,” and often underperform in highly competitive environments HSPs get easily rattled in stressful situations and under time pressure HSPs are highly empathetic and frequently “pick up moods” from other people or feel like a ‘sponge’, soaking up the emotions of others About 70% of HSPs are introverted, while about 30% are extroverted. All of them tend to have rich inner lives and show a tendency to think deeply about the world, others and their lives HSPs tend to need more time on their own in order to reduce their level of overstimulation, often preferring being in nature or in a quiet, less stimulating environment HSPs are often drawn to the arts, music, nature and spirituality and quickly have an emotional reaction to images of beauty HSPs often perform poorly, even doing familiar tasks, when they are being observed or “evaluated” by others HSPs are very sensitive to other species and nature. Since they are so in tune with energies, emotions, and the lesser-noticed things in life, HSPs often feel emotionally and physically distressed when they witness cruelty to animals or the destruction of the natural world as if it is actually happening to them. On a more positive note, HSPs tend to re-charge their batteries by spending solitary time in nature or with a companion animal and often experience a deep sense of elation and joy when engaged in such activities HSPs tend to be motivated by eudemonic, rather than hedonic wellbeing: They are often driven by an internal search for meaning, and if something doesn’t feel meaningful, they can’t just “do it anyway” - they need to silence or filter it out.

• • • • • • • •

Be honest about your predisposition to be a HSP, especially in close relationships and work situations. Reduce the number of intense stimuli in your environment. Limit the number of tasks when multi-tasking. Avoid burnout by noticing early warning signs, such as feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Get your thoughts and deep emotions on paper so that they won’t cloud your brain. Take advantage of your creativity: draw, colour or write. Take advantage of your predisposition for higher empathy to strengthen relationships. Be comfortable in your sensitive skin and never be ashamed of it. By being aware of your HSP nature it’s possible to develop a keen interest in and gratitude for your consciousness and sense of connectedness with other people close to you, the natural world and other species. This complex inner realm, often neglected by many people in our modern, fast-paced society, can become your individual path to wholeness and happiness.

Am I HSP?

Growing up with a more finely tuned nervous system and therefore a “sharper” perception of the world can therefore come with difficulties. However, it’s important to remember that the trait itself isn’t problematic, although not recognising or responding to the characteristics, or trying to ‘fit in’ in a largely non-HSP society can cause the highly sensitive individual some distress. So, how can the HSP cultivate their traits whilst learning to recognise when they may need some time out to re-charge their batteries? A common solution for HSPs is making lifestyle changes in order to find their optimal level of stimulation but first, it’s necessary to actually recognise HSP characteristics and attributes. Do you think you may be an HSP? • HSPs are often more aware of subtleties in their environment and become overstimulated more quickly than others • HSPs are often more sensitive to physical pain or the effect of stimulating substances (e.g. caffeine)

Don’t get tied in knots with natural cordage Bushcrafts is about using the immediate environment to supply your needs and a good knowledge of plants and their many uses is an essential part of the skills needed. As you can probably imagine this is a huge subject which covers things like wild food, wild medicines, shelter, tools, hunting equipment, containers, fire, cordage, personal hygiene; you can easily write a book or several on the subject. What I’d like to do here is give you a different perspective on some of the plants with which you are probably very familiar and perhaps get you experimenting with them and the creative skills involved in turning them into something useful. We’ll just take a closer look at one of these today: cordage. There are many occasions when you are setting up bush camp or making things, for which you need a good bit of string. Luckily there are several plants that will provide you with ways of binding things together. Sometimes you don’t need to do much to them to make them useable, for example honeysuckle stems can provide a very strong rope substitute capable of supporting significant weight. Evidence for this was found during the excavation of a wood henge which was exposed by the sea some years ago now (possibly East Anglia but I can’t rightly remember – I think it may have been nicknamed Sea Henge if you are interested in trying to find out more). This was from the Neolithic period and when they dug up the heaviest bit – the bottom of a large oak tree complete with its main roots bases – they found it was encircled by several thick strands of honeysuckle which had been used to drag it into place and put it stem first into the ground with the root plate bit forming what looked very much like an altar. Spruce trees are very shallow rooting and with just a little bit of digging a little distance from the main trunk you will expose some of the thinner pliable roots – about the thickness of a pencil or less. If you follow these along, digging them up as you go, you will end up with strong useable strands that can be used for binding things, such as wooden frameworks, together. This is particularly useful in shelter building or making camp furniture. You can process the roots by splitting if they are too thick; peel the bark off the root and then using your knife open up a split in the end with an equal amount of root on either side of the split. Ease them apart simultaneously pulling them and if it starts to thin more on one side than the other, pull at more of an angle on the thicker side to try and correct it. As with all bushcraft activities think about the environment and minimising your impact upon it; don’t dig up more than you need as you are reducing the feeding and water uptake ability of the tree with each strand you lift. The thin twigs of some trees can be used to make lengths of strong pliable material for lashing things together; the best is willow, hazel is good too. Select long, straight growing, thin twigs (less than pencil thickness if you can) often referred to as withies in basket making and in bushcrafts. Use them when fresh and green and newly cut. You need to firmly but carefully twist the withy all the way along its length to weaken the harder woody material in it and make it more pliable. You should then be able to bend it and twist it and tie knots in it with little trouble. Some trees are poor for this for example alder breaks easily but experiment with what you have to hand. With all the above there is little or no processing needed to obtain something that is very useful for strong binding. There are several other common plants that are a source of fibres that can be used to manufacture strong cordage. The under bark of some trees is particularly strong and

can be used for lashing directly or made into a very strong cordage. The under barks of willow, wych elm and the limes are all excellent. In each case you need to remove the bark from a youngish branch or stem and then separate the outer bark from the under bark. Doing this in spring when the sap is rising and the wood is saturated helps greatly but I do teach how to get this cordage source even in the winter when the wood is at its driest. The strands of under bark are then dried and can be moistened later to manufacture string by hand, again a technique which I teach but I think I’d tie myself in knots, if you’ll pardon the pun, if I tried to describe the process here – it is much easier to show someone and let them have a go with a bit of supervision.

You’ll sleep out in the tarp shelter you make and cook your breakfast on the fire in the morning. Food is not included in the price.

Two more very common plants which will be familiar to you that you can manufacture good cordage from are brambles and nettles. Both have fibres on the outside of the stem that can be removed and used either without processing for binding where there isn’t a lot of strength needed or made into a strong string where more strength is needed. I often, for example, use the strands on the outside of nettles without any further processing, to tie up food that I have wrapped in leaves to cook in the embers of my camp fires. Obtaining the strands is a simple process in both cases perhaps easier to demonstrate though rather than to try and write down. The process of manufacturing the cordage/string is the same as for the under bark already mentioned; most people pick up the method fairly quickly and within 30 minutes are confidently making impressive looking cordage. There are plants that I haven’t mentioned that grow around us that yield fibre for cordage some of them need a bit more processing to extract the fibres but they all can be used to make very useable strong cord which is basically indispensable in bushcrafts for so many activities. If you’d like to learn more and have a go please get in touch with me at Wild North Discovery; once you are hooked on cord making it is difficult to stop and it’s a very satisfying and useful thing to do while sitting round the camp fire at the end of the day.

If you are a local business and would like to know more about what is going on in the business community then the Prudhoe Business Forum is the place to be. As well as quarterly meetings to provide updates and networking opportunities we also have a Facebook and Twitter presence keeping everyone up to date.

There’s been a lot going on in Prudhoe in recent years, Prudhoe Town Fair, Highfield Fest, Kite Festivals, Radio Prudhoe, Prudhoe Town Show to name just a few. Behind the scenes there is a massive amount of work going on and that is where the local Businesses, Community Groups and Town and County Councillors all pull together to make them happen. But do you know how many local businesses and community groups we have here in Prudhoe ? Probably a lot more than most of us are aware of ! That is why the Prudhoe Business Forum in conjunction with Prudhoe Web Design run by Zak Yakoob and Peter Surridge created the Visit Prudhoe website (www.visitprudhoe.uk) covering Prudhoe and the surrounding towns and villages. We also run Facebook and Twitter Social media accounts for Visit Prudhoe with regular updates on local news, events, activities and offers. The objective of the Visit Prudhoe website to try and attract people to visit and use the facilities in Prudhoe by providing a directory of all local businesses and community groups in one location. Not only that you can also see what’s going on locally, local news, special offers from local businesses and local adverts. All businesses can have a free listing on the website – so if you’re a local business that doesn’t yet have a listing you can either go online and register yourself, or contact us at info@visitprudhoe.uk. There are also premium listings available giving enhanced functionality within the website, increased advertising opportunities and additional information on your business listing for a small annual contribution towards the running, maintenance and enhance of the website going forward.

See our Prudhoe Business Community page and group on Facebook or contact us on; info@visitprudhoe.uk for more information. Help bring the Prudhoe Business Community and Community Groups together by joining us at the Prudhoe Business Forum and

Living Art

Paul Stangroom talks about painting, teaching and living in his gallery in Prudhoe’s converted washeteria. How is life in your art gallery in Prudhoe right now? It’s the best it’s ever been, combining painting, living and teaching in the same building. l Watercolours Running the gallery is one of my lifetime’s ambitions. I get up as early as 5am and paint Prints before classes, and right into the l night after teaching - if I’m not too drunk! l Books Has the move to Prudhoe affected your work? I used ‘Stanley Burn, Prudhoe’ as a gallery sign, to celebrate Prudhoe, and ‘Pithead, l Grove Rake Mine’ as another, to markCards the strong coal mining history of the region. I feel very comfortable in Prudhoe l – my neighbours are friendly and supportive. Sitting Posters amongst a body of my own work can be a spur to me – to see a line of continuity, even ArthaveClasses though the work is diverse. And I l don’t to pay gallery commission, selling my own work direct.

How does the gallery space work for your students? They really love painting here – the light is great and they enjoy the local shops. The gallery is warmed by the stove in the winter – and in the summer, there’s the garden. Interview by Margaret Burt

Restoring Ratty to his rightful place!

Over the 5 years of the project, we will release 2000 voles back into Kielder. I was lucky enough to be able to help with the release on Wednesday 12th June, along with staff and volunteers from all the project partners: Northumberland Wildlife Trust, Tyne Rivers Trust and Forestry Commission. It was an ‘all hands on deck’ kind of day, as we needed to get around 40 pens out along a few burns. The pens are placed at roughly 20m intervals on very rough terrain, and covered with foliage to keep them cool. The voles are placed into the pens along with straw, vegetation and a piece of apple and carrot each. The pens are visited daily and topped up with food. On the fourth day, a baffle plate is put onto the pen. This is a wooden plate with a small

Welcome to Cummins Chiropody & Podiatry …where we believe that maintaining your foot health is essential to your overall wellbeing. We are a professional and dedicated footcare team. This means we have the skills and experience to ensure that you receive first class treatment for your feet. Your feet…enhance the performance and comfort of your entire body. As I write this, the Restoring Ratty team are out and about in the wilds of Kielder carrying out the third release of water voles back into the forest since the project launched two years ago. Each release takes place over about 10 days, but there’s a lot of preparation in the preceding months to make sure that everything will go smoothly when the animals are here. To make sure that we are choosing the best places to release them, the Restoring Ratty staff work closely with Forestry Commission Wildlife Rangers to scout out the burns and streams and make sure that there is appropriate habitat for the voles to settle in. A large number of sites around Kielder Water & Forest Park will be looked at. We then look at the results of surveys that we have carried out earlier in the year to find out where the water voles that we released last year have settled. We need to make sure that the sites we choose for a release are within a suitable distance of the established water voles so that the populations will link up. The list of potential sites are then checked to make sure that there won’t be any tree felling or access issues that could affect the release. After a process of elimination, we will have a handful of sites to choose from. Once we have our chosen sites, we work out how many voles will go into each site, and make sure that the voles that will be released together are not closely related. This ensures that there is a genetic diversity amongst this new population. Voles are released singly, in breeding pairs (hopefully with the female already pregnant) or in family groups. We work with Derek Gow Consultancy who are specialists in breeding water voles in captivity. They have a record for every vole that is released that shows where it came from and how it is related to all of the other voles. The voles that we release into Kielder have been captive bred from individuals taken from populations in the North Pennines, The Trossachs and North Yorkshire. We use voles from these populations as studies have shown that they are genetically similar to the voles that used to inhabit Kielder, before they became locally extinct. The voles that we take to breed from are from the last litter of the year, and typically would not survive through winter. We do this to avoid having an adverse impact on the donor population of voles. The voles that were captured then travel to Derek Gow’s facility in Devon to form our captive breeding population. We had 160 voles for this release.

56

hole in one corner, which allows the animals the chance to explore the outside but return to the safety of the pen if they want to. After a couple of days, the pens are taken away and the voles are left to fend for themselves. It’s an amazing project to be involved with and actually seeing these animals back where they belong is a fantastic feeling. The project is made possible thanks to funding received from National Lottery Players through the Heritage Lottery Fund. Of course, all this effort to reintroduce the water vole would be wasted if mink were to come back to Kielder. We have a big team of volunteers, landowners and partner organisations checking a network of rafts around the forest to monitor for the presence of mink. The rafts have a tray of clay inside, and any animal that walks over the clay will leave footprints behind. If we find a mink footprint, we will then put a trap out to try and catch it. Natural predators of water vole, such as otter, are too big to get inside the burrows and these act as a safe refuge. However, mink, which are an introduced species, are small enough to get into the burrows and can quickly wipe out whole populations. For a chance to see water voles in Kielder, why not join one of our Ratty Rambles taking place through the summer – visit www.nwt.org.uk/whats-on for more details.

What is a Biomechanical Assessment?

Differences in leg length, sports injuries, minor accidents or even just getting older can cause foot or leg discomfort. A biomechanical assessment examines how your feet and legs work together. This helps us determine how a specific therapy or personalised foot support could benefit you. Talk to Mike or Dawn if you think an assessment may benefit you.

Building Natural Immunity, Part 6 Foods can harm, or foods can heal

Today, more than ever, we need to consider the epidemic of chronic ill health that is pervading the UK today. We need to look at the lifestyle choices we make for ourselves and how we role model and abet our children to make the same. The consequences of our actions either culminate in vitality and health into old age or pave the way for the slippery slope towards the opposite end of the spectrum and groaning acquiescence. Despite advances in medicine and technology, the industrialised world is getting sicker and suffering more chronic disease than ever before – the state of declining health is largely down to poor lifestyle preferences and habits accumulated over a lifetime. Since the 1900’s the use of pharmaceutical drugs has increased exponentially – most concerning though, is the rising number of children and middle-aged adults now taking regular prescription medication. In a society that insists on fast access to everything, from fast food to fast ‘cures’ – we are treating our bodies like machines. Keeping the body working sufficiently enough to sustain life and productivity without considering how this could very well impact on our ability to function at any meaningful level as we get older, is unfortunately the mindset that has been created through media, advertising and generational patterned behaviour.

Is it any wonder, children are hyped up, zoned out, overweight and generally unhealthy, when their diets contain nothing but carbohydrates, sugar and artificial colourings, flavourings and sweeteners? And, did you know margarine is one molecule away from being plastic? An abundance of refined carbs, sugar and trans fats inflame the body to such an extent that it starts to destroy itself – the body’s immune system turns in on self, no longer able to identify self from non-self and a process of auto-immunity sets in like a runaway train that if left unaddressed may lead to an outcome that could have been avoided. We need to pay attention to this burgeoning decline in health and wellbeing, and as parents we need to be mindful of providing healthy dietary options for the whole family, as such, we need to be exemplary examples to our children, so they can adopt lifelong healthy habits to pass onto their children. Collective consciousness (AND action) is essential to turn the needless tide of chronic illness in this country before it’s all too late and we become permanently sucked into the vortex of incapacity and pharmacological dependency.

Attitudes towards nutrition, in my opinion, seem to be overwhelmingly blasé. My children came home after attending a school holiday camp and the first thing they couldn’t wait to tell me was regarding a child who had eaten a bumper bag of crisps followed by a bottle of Lucozade for lunch, and my question to them was, well what else did he have in his lunchbox? And their reply was “nothing, that was it mum”. My next question… were they Walkers prawn cocktail flavoured by any chance? My kids just laughed, they knew where I was going with this… I’ll get to that later. I cannot really believe that parents simply don’t care enough that they deprive their children of adequate and basic nutrition knowingly – it has to be, that they simply don’t think that it matters that much, that they simply don’t understand that an unhealthy diet is providing the framework for chronic disease and illness such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders. Conditions which inevitably lead to reliance on drugs and medications just to function and /or stay alive. The burden of chronic illness is widespread – not only is it a tremendous liability to the already ‘stretched to capacity’ NHS resources, but it is also an encumbrance to those who love and care for us, physically, emotionally, logistically and financially. Whilst our ‘health’ care system seems to be promoting policies on healthy lifestyle education – when it comes to the doctor/patient interface, these policies are not implemented. I am aware of instances where patients have asked for help in turning their health around, only to have been rebuked, rebuffed and given a pharmaceutical or surgical option (fast ‘cure’), rather than the support and nutritional counselling they really required. Those who need assistance the most are being failed. The mindset of the ‘quick fix’ for problems that require longer term lifestyle interventions has been indoctrinated within us for so long – good old fashioned common sense and good fashioned basic nutritional knowledge has become lost to so many, and the health of the nation is now paying a very heavy price. Education surrounding nutrition aside, food is no longer as nature intended - it has been chemicalised, plastinated, GMO’d, refined, diced and spliced and doesn’t even look like food anymore. Low fat, low cal, no sugar, low sugar is far worse than its full fat, full sugar counterparts. Sucralose, the new kid on the block of artificial sweeteners make aspartame look like health food, and BTW, the prawn cocktail flavoured ‘bumper bag of crisps’ is sweetened with sucralose.

Can a little black spice really boost our focus attention and memory ? For most of us our memory declines as we age. Testing plants for use in memory is now a thriving research area around the world and incentives are great such as the need for new therapies for Alzheimer’s which affects so many in old age. Sometimes people need a little convincing when it comes to making the connection between plants and brain boosting - but this is not new. Two of today’s treatments for Alzheimer’ are based on drugs that come from plants. A drawback is that the plants providing these drugs - galantamine from snowdrops or daffodils and rivastigmine from the calabar bean, are highly toxic which means side effects such as nausea are a problem. There are plants used for memory and concentration that are not toxic and you can be confident that their therapeutic effect is backed by hundreds of years of use, along with clear evidence from the lab and from recent clinical tests on humans. Cognition boosters involve the brain’s memory and attention signal, acetylcholine. Vital to learning and awareness, this stimulatory neurotransmitter helps us to maintain attention, think clearly and remember. In Alzheimer’s the memory signal (cholinergic) system is impaired. Acetylcholine is the most studied brain signal for memory and dementia and it is significant that it decreases as we age. Plants for cognition contain ingredients that boost and hold this memory signal in the brain. Other brain signals like glutamate are also involved in memory and plants can also affect this signal. But also key to maintaining brain health are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant plant ingredients. Sage and rosemary are rich sources of these compounds and perhaps it is no coincidence that the English saying goes ‘why should a man die when he has sage growing in his garden?’ But another culinary herb is a key medicinal plant favoured in Arabic culture for hundreds of years for improving memory. Nigella grows and flowers readily in colder climates (unlike Middle Eastern saffron, which has equally extensive mind and body benefits) and was described as the Ayurvedic miracle plant - it has an extraordinary range of health benefits, many of them backed up with science.

improved memory and attention in the elderly as well as enhanced mood and lowered anxiety in healthy males. It also reduced blood pressure and improved glycaemic index in controlled trials, and improved lipid profiles and immune function (in initial studies) - all relevant to cognitive function. Nigella has been shown clinically to treat asthma, ear infections, dyspepsia and arthritis, among other conditions, leading to its “miracle herb” status.

In the lab. Nigella is memory-enhancing in various lab models. It

increases the memory signals acetylcholine and glutamate, and also shows anti-depressive, anti-epileptic, anti-psychotic and anti-oxidant effects. It is also neuroprotective against inflammation.

Key chemicals. The bioactive thymoquinone from seeds, as well

as alkaloids such as nigellicine and saponins. The essential oil contains carvacrol, thymol and the memory- and mood-boosting (alpha- and beta-) pinenes.

How to take it. A medicinal dose of dried seeds is 2-3g daily, though

as a foodstuff can be used liberally - dry roast to bring out flavour and remove any bitterness and use in oils, salads, bread and curries. Nigella is also available in capsules and as a seed powder or oil.

Safety. Not fully evaluated though all clinical trials so far report safety. Contact dermatitis and lowered blood pressure have been reported as side effects. In one randomised placebo controlled (‘gold standard’) pilot clinical trial carried out at a boarding school in Bangladesh, 500mg capsules of nigella per day was shown to stabilize mood, decrease anxiety and modulate cognition in forty-eight 14-17 year old males.

Nigella sativa

About the plant. From southern Europe, North Africa and Asia this annual likes the sun and grows to around 30cm with a branching stem and finely divided leaves. It has delicate white blue flowers but it’s the toothed black seeds which are gathered and used medicinally – when rubbed they have a peppery smell and taste similar to oregano. History and folklore. Also called black cumin, blessed seed, wild onion seed, kalonji and cheveux de venus in France, the seeds were found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The prophet Mohammed described nigella’s many healing powers, saying the only disease it can’t cure is death. It’s also referred to in the Bible (Isaiah) and was used by the 1st century AD Greek physician Dioscorides. Used in herbal medicine around the world for a wide variety of disorders, from hypertension to headache, it’s regarded as a high-ranking, evidence-based plant medicine. What scientists say - In humans. In a number of controlled clinical studies nigella enhanced cognition including verbal learning and it also

Traders Index Here at the Tyne Valley Express we always work hard to find good quality local traders. If we didn’t, the magazine would not work for us or for you. Any poor trader will always be removed once we become aware. Our traders are a loyal bunch and most have been with us for years. They also help us list 100’s of What’s on entries for free thanks to their adverts. We are now actively looking for ‘NEW’ local traders and would like our readers help to fill in the WANTED spaces - or even create new ones. So if you are a business owner or know a trader that might benefit from the exposure to 31,000 homes then please get in touch? We promise to look after you too!
