It’s Back to Grass Roots I’m not a fan of supermarkets, even though I find it a necessity to shop there; but I must say, after I paid a visit to the new Morrison’s supermarket store in Blaydon, was quite impressed. The layout of the fruit and vegetable displays were a refreshing change, and I’m glad to see that the fresh herbs (not the pre-packed ones) are being kept in water – this keeps them fresh for longer and stops them wilting.

Of course they’ve based their store design on the traditional idea of the local village shop, including a butcher’s shop, fresh fish shop and deli. Let’s hope they don’t forget where the idea came from and continue support for small businesses. It all looked very impressive and I even checked out with staff behind the counter just how much knowledge they had about the product they were selling. The butcher had first-hand knowledge of the meat, going back to grass roots on breed and what produced the best cuts. Of course, no one wants to think about the processes in between; we, as consumers, just don’t want to know. Unlike many of our counterparts in Europe, where children are brought up with the understanding of such things; therefore, what we might see as a grim reality is understood from a wider perspective of social inclusion. The animal becomes part of a social structure centred on the family and their needs (and I stress welfare) are as important as the family who maintain it.

I can’t see myself ever turning to liquid nourishment as a supplement for the real thing! And yet this is what some are saying the future holds as the demand for food grows in an ever increasing population. How can we ever supplement crunching on crisp lettuce, vegetables and other food stuff as an alternative?

Perhaps, as the demand for allotments increases so might the need to establish our own farm small holding. Who knows?

As a reminder of just how good vegetables can be see my recipe below. It’s a good way of getting the children to eat vegetables too!

For this recipe you will need: - A Baking Tray - ceramic or metal 2” deep - A Frying Pan - A Boiling Pan - Measuring Jug - Grater - A Sharp Knife

Ingredients 8 large courgettes 3 large Spanish onions 1 small cauliflower 3 cloves garlic (crushed) 1 tablespoon plain flour 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter – salted will do just adjust your seasoning to taste

150g of either Gruyere or Cheddar cheese – it must be a hard cheese.

100g white or wholemeal bread 1/3 pint milk 1 tablespoon Olive oil 1 level tsp grated whole nutmeg or ground nutmeg Salt and pepper

Method Heat the oven to 120oc

both the cheese and crumbs in a bowl simply to mix together.

Pour the vegetable mixture into your tray then sprinkle the top with the breadcrumb mixture. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes until golden brown on the top.

Measure the milk in a jug - you can use any type of milk for this recipe.

Place the bread in the oven on a tray and cook on a low temperature until it is crisp. Once done – set aside then turn the temperature up to 160oc. Grease the tray for the tray bake and set aside.

Wash the courgettes in cold water and pat dry, slice them ½” thick along with the onions. Break up the cauliflower into small florets. Place the cauliflower in a pan of salted boiling water and par boil for a few minutes retaining their crispness. Once done, drain and set aside along with the other vegetables.

Melt the butter and oil in a pan add the onions and fry until tender, season with salt this will prevent them turning brown. Add the garlic, courgettes and cauliflower, give a gentle stir then add in the flour along with the grated nutmeg, salt and pepper.

Cook the flour for a few minutes stirring all the time to ensure the starch is cooked out.

Warm the milk slightly in the microwave or pan, add this gradually to the vegetables. Keep stirring gently to remove any lumps until it thickens. This produces a white creamy sauce that will add richness to the dish - set aside.

Grate the cheese and make the breadcrumbs by placing in a plastic bag and smashing into crumbs with either a rolling pin or the base of a pan. Place

My shed swallows have now left after a successful breeding season 2 clutches of eggs and 8 chicks raised to adulthood. So after much summer work these active parents have left for warmer shores as a group of 10.

I look forward to seeing them again next year.

Ryton RFC move from strength to strength Ryton RFC are a rugby union club on the up, with fantastic facilities, situated on the border between Ryton and Barmoor. After a successful year in which Ryton 1st team won the Durham and Northumberland division 2 title, only losing 2 games all season, they have decided to invest heavily in their facilities to create the perfect environment to nurture and develop young talent and achieve success both on and off the pitch.

Ryton field 3 senior teams each Saturday enabling players of all ages and abilities to enjoy the game of rugby. The teams are highly competitive in the corresponding leagues and play a mixture of social games and league fixtures. Ryton train on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm at the club under the guidance of Jon Benson, a level 3 coach. The 38-year-old is in his sixth year at the club after attaining England honours at an U21 level he went on to a professional career which saw him playing Premiership rugby for West Hartlepool, Leeds and Rotherham, making 60 top-flight appearances and featuring in repeated promotions. I asked Jon how he thought the team would fair in D&N 1, “I’m really proud of what the lads achieved last season, it gave us a lot of confidence going forward.”

“This season will be a new challenge which we are all looking forward to, although it is a new league, we know what to expect, we have played most of the teams in the past and I feel we are more equipped to deal with whatever is put in front of us. Pre-season has gone well, the lads look fit and motivated to do well. We have signed a few new players who I feel will make the team stronger. The pitches look immaculate and the first game also coincides with the opening of our fantastic new changing facilities at Ryton which look superb. Although goals haven’t been set in terms of our league position come the end of the season, we know this year will be tough but if the lads play, train and enjoy their rugby like last year anything is possible”. Jon is ably assisted by Andy Rodenby a highly skilled player with a drive and enthusiasm for coaching and with the support from ex players the coaching and team spirit is top class.

Junior Rugby at Ryton begins at 4 year old with the non-competitive “Little Ruggers” allowing youngsters to develop a taste for the game before they join the ranks of “The Mini’s” who begin with tag rugby before graduating to tackling, scrummaging, lineouts etc. and rising though the age groups until they can represent Ryton at a senior level.

The mini’s and little ruggers train and play on a Sunday morning. Ryton has seen great success with their junior programme producing several England Elite players, Newcastle Falcon stars, and numerous Durham county regulars.

The biggest change at Ryton has been the facilities, over half a million pounds has been invested in recent years, from the installation of new match play floodlights, a large security fence around all 4 pitches, a drainage project ensuring great playing conditions whatever the weather and most recently a complete overhaul and extension of the changing rooms. The new changing opened on the 6th of September, which was Ryton’s 1st league game of the season against Durham City.

Potential players, rugby fans, families, friends or anyone wishing to experience local competitive rugby is encouraged to come along to the club and see if Ryton can build on their 15 game unbeaten league run from last season, the next home game is against Consett on the 20th September, 3pm kick off.

The clubhouse will be open and provides a variety of drinks, snacks and sandwiches. There are options to sponsor a match which will give you exclusive use of the lounge for you and your guests before, during and after the game and provide a buffet for them to enjoy along with large screen Sky TV in a comfortable well-furnished room. Ryton has two large function rooms, the bar which can be hired for any occasion has a capacity of 120 people with plenty of room for seating, a disco can be provided by the club, theres a kitchen, projector with big screen Sky TV, access to the pitches for a bouncy castle, hog roast, BBQ or just for children to play. The lounge can hold 80 in comfortable luxurious surroundings, there are doors to an outdoor patio ensuring a good day rain or shine, a projector with large screen TV showing Sky Sports.

There’s more to the club than just rugby with Zumba 10-11 on Tuesday mornings, the Bridge club 7:30-10:30pm on Thursdays and 50 - 50 dancing Tuesdays 8-11pm, all major sporting events are shown live on the big screens with Newcastle rugby and football games taking precedence, the club have BT Sport as well as the full Sky Sports package and a great lively atmosphere ensuring a good time. The club also boasts a large free car park with disabled bays and has been recently resurfaced and painted.

Tyne Rivers Trust Why do we Need Healthy Rivers?

Clean, healthy rivers are the lifeblood of our communities and are vital to our own health and quality of life. Most of us live within a mile of a river or stream – although this is not always obvious in our more urban areas - and all of our drinking water comes directly or indirectly from rivers and streams. Whether moorland stream or urban estuary, with very different characteristics, if the water is pure and the habitat natural, then everything works and the ecosystem is balanced.

Here in the Tyne valley, it is tempting to take the health of our rivers for granted: in rural Northumberland, the rivers almost always look beautiful, no matter what is really happening, and in urban reaches, the river has clearly made a huge recovery from the depths of its heavily-polluted, industrial past. However, there is much that remains to be done, both to continue the restoration work and to tackle new threats to our rivers.

Tyne Rivers Trust works impartially to educate and engage everyone who lives within the Tyne catchment, championing this great River, and delivering evidence-based habitat improvement programmes which address its needs.

Tyne Issues Water Quality:

Erosion by rivers is a natural process and the presence of sediment of all sizes is necessary to support healthy freshwater ecosystems.

But too much fine sediment infills the spaces between river gravels and pebbles and leads to problems. Siltation in rivers is intrinsically linked to the movement of topsoil by wind and rain, but can be rapidly accelerated by certain modern, intensified farming practices, including over-grazing; earlier crop-sowing; chemical inputs (eg pesticides, phosphorus, nitrogen - creating nutrient overloads or locally toxic conditions); lack of riverside; ‘buffer strips’ to catch topsoil and contaminants; livestock access to rivers.

Tyne Rivers Trust

Tyne Rivers Trust works to reduce fine sediment and agricultural pollutants entering our watercourses. With help from volunteers, we monitor across the catchment to select siltation ‘hot spots’, working with farmers/landowners in areas where we can provide most benefit to silt-sensitive species, such as the freshwater pearl mussel and spawning fish.

Major industrial pollution incidents are thankfully now rare, but our monitoring does pick up minor events which are then addressed promptly. However, the South Tyne still carries toxic heavy metals (eg zinc and lead) in water and sediment, as a legacy from historic mining activities. We are trialling ways of containing metals from old spoil-heaps. In the North Tyne, we are working in partnership with the Forestry Commission to address acidity and siltation issues arising from commercial forestry practices.

Channels & Flow:

A healthy, natural river system is one where the river can move in three dimensions without artificial obstructions. The Tyne was badly damaged during the twentieth century, when gravel companies extracted millions of tonnes of gravel from the river bed (peaking at 106 million tonnes by 1968). The Tyne was a particularly attractive source for gravel, being a gravel-bed virtually from source to tidal limit and close to urban Tyneside, as well as having good gravel pockets further upstream. This did great damage to natural river processes, exacerbated by the building of many weirs and road culverts.

In-river obstructions cause problems for all fish, but especially migratory species, such as eels, salmon and sea trout which travel up and down river to spawn and migrate. There are many such obstructions on the Tyne; we improve access past these obstructions, large and small, which would not otherwise be tackled.

Land reclamation and intensive drainage systems have been used since the 18th century to increase the amount of land for agriculture. The loss of trees and moorland (both of which act like a ‘sponge’ for rainfall) changes river dynamics, sometimes causing more frequent and extreme flood events. Some rivers and streams have been embanked to protect agricultural land and settlements, leading to higher river levels and faster flows downstream, because the river cannot spread into the floodplains. On top of all these pressures, we are seeing an increase in extreme weather events.

Tyne Rivers Trust is developing ways to reduce peak flows, by holding back or slowing down river flow in the upper reaches, and creating retention areas to capture silt.

Some non-native plants and wildlife directly and indirectly threaten the Tyne’s native species. For example, introduced

American Signal crayfish and mink directly threaten, respectively, our own native crayfish and water voles. We encourage river users to adopt bio security measures, which can be as simple as drying or disinfecting your wellies. With help from our local ‘River Watch’ volunteers, we tackle non-native plants such as Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam and giant hogweed.

From kingfishers to otters to trout, the Tyne supports a wonderful variety of flora and fauna which thrive when the river is healthy.

If the river is damaged, elements within the ecosystem respond – often it’s the ‘bugs’ (invertebrates in the river water) that first indicate there’s a problem. Thanks to our volunteers, who we have trained in Riverfly invertebrate monitoring techniques, we regularly monitor several key indicators and spot problems early on.

Culverted or embanked, partly or completely underground, they become invisible, and riverside areas are completely modified – concreted by pavements and buildings, hugely increasing surface run-off. In addition, the pollutants from modern urban living include tyre rubber, oil, detergents, wastewater from households, as well as discharges from some remaining riverbank industries. Much of our sewerage system is Victorian, some much older, and can become overwhelmed after heavy rain, when storm water mixed with raw sewage is discharged directly to rivers.

We are all ‘upon Tyne’ From the first boats of our earliest settlements using the natural port of the Tyne Estuary; through exploitation of our land’s resources by the Romans; the use of the river throughout the ages for navigation; seeing eras come and go for shipbuilding, mining and other heavy industry; the evolution of music, literature, and art – our culture and heritage is written in the currents of our rivers.

The Tyne is a majestic, iconic river. It deserves to be looked after.

Hexham Abbey Festival of Music and the Arts Friday September 19th – Saturday 27th September 2014

War and Reconciliation, concerts and events at Hexham Abbey Supported by funding from Arts Council England and the National Lottery, Hexham Abbey Festival of Music and the Arts will be celebrating nine days of artistic excellence with something for all the family. Festival Director, Marcus Wibberley, has created a programme of commemoration and celebration, incorporating music conceived during World War I or inspired by it, contrasted by the youth of the Festival’s youngest soloist yet, violinist Leia Zhu. Classical concerts are contrasted with African drumming, folk music and the vitality of the exhilarating free running and Parkour group, 3RUN, who will bring the Abbey interior to life with their high impact and visually stunning choreography performed to live music.

Parkour and Free Running 3RUN have the reputation as the most skilled Parkour and Free Running athletes in the world. They have been involved in countless groundbreaking projects, including 007 James Bond Casino Royale, awardwinning commercials for Microsoft Xbox, and have smashed a number of Guinness World Records.

With music responding to the choreography, their performance will take place within the Abbey where they will use the features of the building as a natural soundboard to their astonishing movements. This is 3RUN’s first visit to Hexham Abbey.

Also FREE is the Family Workshop with VOCES8: VOCES8 will be leading a family workshop at the Abbey on the afternoon of Saturday 27th September.

VOCES8 is the flagship performance and education ensemble of the charitable music foundation, Voces Cantabiles Music (VCM). The ensemble leads an innovative series of music education workshops, reaching 20,000 people annually around the world ,with the aim of inspiring creativity through music.

And this year, Hexham Abbey Festival is just one of the many places VOCES8 will be delivering a workshop. So why not come along for an inspiring and extremely enjoyable afternoon, where you will be introduced to singing through games and fun activities suitable for children and adults alike?

Gardener’s Cottage Plants

The Autumnal Gardener As summer bows out and we wave fond farewells to the swallows and house martins as they head off for warmer climes, it’s easy to think that it’s all over for another year. But autumn can be a marvellous time of year for the garden and countryside, which still have plenty to offer.

Late Flowering Season

Thoughtful planting can give us masses of colour for the border in late summer and autumn, and attract many pollinating insects into our gardens. Most of us are familiar with the magnetic qualities of buddleia to attract masses of butterflies. By deadheading the spent flowers, we can prolong the flowering season, rewarding us with their sweet heady scent and vivid colours for a couple of weeks longer.

Another superb, late flowering, ‘pollinator pulling plant’ is eupatorium purpureum. Self-supporting, giant, dark coloured stems carry large, cloud-like, pink or white frothy blooms that are absolutely covered with all manner of flying insects, feeding on the nectar rich food supply on offer.

In fact, there are many perennials available to give us vivid colour right through the autumn. For example, asters or michaelmas daisies (now classified as symphyotrichum by the Royal Horticultural Society) are just starting to flower and will stay in flower until late November.

Wildflowers in Hedgerows

Look out too for native wildflowers in the hedgerows and along roadside verges, still giving us a show: yarrow and red campion are two of our longest flowering and most attractive wild flowers. I have red campion growing in the shelter of a hawthorn hedge at the front of my garden which unbelievably was still in flower at Christmas last year. Yarrow, with its white or pale pink, flat, umbellifer type flowers can yield its blooms right up until late October. The feathery aromatic foliage also looks superb in the morning dew. Oh, and if you cut or graze yourself by accident whilst out walking the dog, rubbing yarrow leaf on the wound will stop it bleeding and has antiseptic qualities too.

and seed heads can provide food for the birds and shelter for insects. The almost fossilised appearance of the dried out seed heads in the winter frosts will provide architecture and interest in the colder months. A few years ago the teasels in my garden looked superb in a heavy hoarfrost, also highlighting the cobwebs strewn between them.

Autumn provides us with plenty of materials to compost. I use the Quick Return (QR) method which was invented back in the 1930s by Maye E Bruce. Compost can be made very quickly (in about a month) without the need to turn the heap. Foraging for Berries

Also while you are out, make sure you have a bag or container so you can do a bit of foraging. Gather blackberries to make a mouth-watering blackberry and apple pie - that’s if you have any left after gorging on them at the roadside! Sloes can be collected too, to make sloe gin for a warming winter aperitif. It’s best to collect them after the first frosts. Nettle tops can be collected to make a tasty soup or uplifting nettle tea.

In the veg garden, reaping the rewards of the hard work put in earlier can be very satisfying. Main crop potatoes can be harvested now. I’ve just dug up some volunteer potatoes left in the ground from last year’s crop and what a harvest!

My other spuds were left-overs from a sack bought in March that were running to seed. These were planted out in May, and are ready to be harvested too, but I think the volunteers always do best. It doesn’t seem to make any difference where the seed potatoes come from, whether they are bought as virus free from the garden centre or just left over spuds from the supermarket. If the blight hits, there are no survivors! (Possibly sarpo varieties excepted, but apparently these don’t taste too good.)

Gathering Seeds

Autumn is the time we start thinking ahead for next year. Seeds can be collected from the garden - these should be placed in paper bags and hung up somewhere warm and dry. Seeds can be gathered from many perennials, including delphinium, astrantia, lupins, achillea and echinacea to name a few. Daffodil bulbs can be planted out in September and October in readiness for spring.

Where Music Meets Art: Balman Gallery Music and art have a long and close relationship. From the anarchic ‘Riot in a Jam Jar’ series from KLF’s James Cauty, to prints by Peter Blake of ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album sleeve fame, Balman Gallery has forceful, whimsical and witty works on a musical theme. Riots in a Jam Jar - James Cauty James Cauty is best known as half of The KLF duo and the man who burnt a million. In August 1994, the K Foundation ( James Cauty and Bill Drummond) famously burned a million pounds in a disused boathouse on Scotland’s, Jura. James Cauty is also known for his anarchic artworks, such as the ‘Riot in a Jam Jar’ series, which includes the blackly humorous ‘Women and Children First’.

Peter Blake - Sergeant Pepper Icon - and the Beach Boys Peter Blake is one of Britain’s best known living artists and perhaps THE best known UK pop artist. The cover design for Beatles’ album Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) was one of his greatest successes. Blake also made sleeves for Band Aid’s, Do They Know It’s Christmas? and Oasis’ Stop the Clocks and was knighted in 2002. Blake is known as the Godfather of British Pop Art.

Roger Clegg The beauty of Northumberland in Autumn Summer has gone and autumn now embraces us. Summer is a great time for photography with days out, much to do and many places to visit. It is a time for family and social activities aided by the long evenings and balmy temperatures. There is much to photograph during the summer and many memories to be captured in our cameras.

Autumn brings other opportunities for photography. For photographs of the towns and landscape it cannot be beaten as the great diversity of the warm autumn colours of the trees intensify into a crescendo of reds and yellows and oranges and browns.

To this wealth of colour add the greens of the grasses and evergreens all under the rich blue sky and fluffy white clouds.

The changing world of colour can add interest and impact to pictures of the world around us as well being a wonderful subject in its own right. As the days get shorter and the sun loses its midday height daytime photography takes on a more three dimensional look with the longer shadows.

The sunrise and the sunset occur at times that are easier to manage and do not involve ludicrously early rises or late night treks back to the car.

When I started photographing Hadrian’s Wall and the Northumberland countryside around it I wanted to try to create a sense of history, legend and mystery along with capturing the beauty and drama of the landscape and the abundance of its history.

Autumn, winter and, to a lesser extent spring, gave me the tools I was looking for. The blandness of summer with its overwhelming greenness morphs gently into the spectacle of autumn colour with the early morning mists and frost adding a sense of mystery and timelessness.

The history of Northumberland is spectacular, much of which is little known outside the Borders. The Reivers is an obvious example as is the Hexham Riot with its implications. The legacy of this frequently violent history is a wealth of historic buildings, both functional and in ruins, giving a wide range of subjects for photography. I once heard from a reliable source that Northumberland has nearly

one in five of all the castles in England; that may include Pele towers and fortified manor houses etc. This has become the focus of much of my photography. To me the autumn tints complement the colours of the sandstone construction of these historic buildings.

Of course there are many interesting historic structures that are not defensive such as bridges, churches, houses etc.

I find that identifying a subject to photograph gives me something to focus on and encourages me to think of how I want to portray that subject. In the old days as an amateur photographer just going out with my camera and looking for something to photograph I was seldom pleased with the results - they also failed to impress anyone else. Working out what I want to photograph and how I want to interpret it gives far more personal satisfaction and also gets me the odd compliment from others.

This Tyne Valley institution has been housed in the old Co Op institute, St Helen’s Street, Corbridge, for eight years. In Il Piccolo, the Italian flag flies alongside the English, and you can expect the best of genuine Italian and Geordie hospitality.

Il Piccolo began its life as a tiny restaurant in Prudhoe. ‘My sister encouraged me to open a restaurant in the Tyne Valley,’ Pam explains. ‘We called it Il Piccolo, because that’s Italian for “small” – it had 22 seats.’

Il Piccolo is now housed in larger premises in Corbridge. The restaurant is flanked by Stuzzico wine and tapas bar and a bright delicatessen and ice cream parlour. Pam and Manuele’s design flair makes it a beautiful building to explore, full of hidden features and foodie treasures. Riverside Corbridge, with its cornucopia of independent shops and galleries, is the perfect setting for the restaurant.

Pam and Manuele’s journey goes back to the ski slopes of the Italian Alps, where the Sicilian boy and Geordie girl met on holiday. They were both in their teens. Pam moved to Italy to work alongside Manuele, they’ve been together since, and son Stefano now works in the restaurant. The Ortos’ customers return regularly, many becoming family friends.

Sicilian Dishes

The a la carte menu is packed with Sicilian dishes - cooked by Manuele, who grew up in rural Sicily, alongside 10 siblings. The menu changes regularly, featuring dishes such as Paglio e Fieno Crema e Funghi, Spigola al Limone and roast duck legs with caramelised orange and ginger sauce. There is a fine selection of desserts, Italian wines and aperitivi. The popular Early Bird menu is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 5.30pm-7pm (from £8.95).

Stuzzico Wine and Tapas Bar

The cosy, classy wine bar is the perfect place to enjoy an Aperol, Peroni or prosecco with friends. Tapas are listed on the blackboard: Bruschetta Ortolana, Gamberoni al Aglio and more.

Stuzzico is the perfect place to sample delicious Italian dishes in an informal setting, or simply enjoy a glass of wine or cappuccino.

Delicatessen and Ice Cream Parlour

Italian delicacies galore are on offer, including Felino Salami, Coppa Salami Milano; Gorgonzola Dolce and Sicilian Pecorino Pepato cheeses; artichokes; olive oil; ciabatta; fine wines and beers. Antipasti are beautifully presented on olive wood platters.

A variety of coffees is on-hand.

In the Movenpick ice cream parlour, traditional flavours like mint chocolate are favourites, as are mango and cream, caramelita and fruity sorbets. Gigantic sharing ices can top off your meal.

Hexham Get ‘Aligned’ and Plan for a Successful Birthing Experience If only I knew then, what I know now...

I can’t count how many times I have heard pregnant women expecting their first baby say they ‘will just go with the flow’ when it comes to their labour, only to find that ‘going with the flow’ can lead to a whole cascade of events culminating in a very less than optimal birthing experience which has become stressful, exhausting and frightening.

If the end result is an ‘emergency’ C- section or instrumental delivery, it can leave the new mother with feelings of disappointment and a sense of failure.

In many westernised countries, a ‘successful birth outcome’ is defined by mother and baby ‘surviving’ the event, which is a truly short-sighted and extremely limiting view in terms of the wonderful and fulfilling experience birthing should be.

I remember my ‘going with the flow’ experience like it was yesterday. After my daughter was delivered with forceps, following a long and arduous labour, my emotions shifted from immediate denial (‘it saved our lives. In Victorian England, we would not have survived!’), to doubt (‘actually, in hindsight, I could have birthed my daughter naturally’), to grief (‘I am devastated by the damage done to my little daughter and the beautiful birth experience we both missed out on’). From this, I went on to explore a whole other side of birth that left me empowered, peaceful and looking forward to the journey that lay ahead when the first twinges of labour kicked in.

I realised in preparing for birth that a failure to plan was truly a plan for failure, and to stack the odds of a fulfilling birthing experience in my favour, I put in place a personal protocol, that I would advise every pregnant ‘mum-to-be’ to follow too: 1.

Believe you can birth your baby naturally, without fear (and without interventions) – In westernised countries, women have been stripped of their power and indoctrinated into believing that they can’t birth naturally without medical interference.

However, our bodies have the innate wisdom to know just what to do. We are designed to give birth and our bodies are fully capable of doing so.

2.

Attend a course in Natal Hypnotherapy - Natal Hypnotherapy helps to control the ‘adrenaline’ moments in labour. Fear causes adrenaline to course through your body, slowing your labour, and in some instances halting it altogether. Staying in control and remaining focussed makes for a more straightforward and progressive labour even through the most challenging moments. During my third labour, I simply breathed my baby out; there was no pushing at all.

3.

Have regular Chiropractic checkups throughout your pregnancy – This ensures your body is working at its best. For easier birthing experiences, your pelvis and pelvic floor must be aligned and balanced so that the birth canal has the optimum amount of space to pass even the largest of babies.

4. Optimise foetal positioning – Don’t despair if you are told your baby has breech, transverse, posterior or oblique lie and that you must prepare for the possibility of a planned C-section. There are many things you can do to encourage your baby into a ‘head down’ position. Often there are bony or soft tissue restrictions in the pelvis and/ or abdomen that prevent optimal foetal positioning, so visiting a Chiropractor would be the first port of call. Many Chiropractors utilise a technique called Webster’s that optimises pelvic space. Exercises can also be recommended by your Chiropractor to help facilitate a ‘head down’ foetal position.

5. Enrol in Active Birth Yoga – Again, to balance the pelvic floor and optimise foetal positioning.

Homeopathic & Herbal Birth Kits – These are great and can be sourced on the internet. If you want a completely natural labouring and birthing experience, these remedies are really useful. I found Rescue Remedy (Bach flower essences) really helpful and used it any time I could feel an ‘adrenaline moment’ looming.

7.

Aromatherapy/Essential oils – These are wonderful and can create a truly harmonious birthing environment (along with dim lighting and gentle birth music). A calm and peaceful environment is essential. Even in a hospital and birthing centre, try to make the space your own. Clary sage makes an excellent substitution for Entonox (gas and air) – put a few drops on a cotton wool ball to breathe in during contractions.

8.

Write a Birth Plan - Be specific about your needs to cover all possible eventualities so that you are in control of your birth. For example, I expressly stated that I did not want to be offered Entonox (gas and air) at any point, unless I asked for it.

No –one offered it and I didn’t ask for it. If you find yourself is a position where you may need to consider intervention, use the acronym BRAN: Benefits – what are the benefits of this intervention? Risks – what are the risks of this intervention? Alternatives – are there any alternatives to this procedure? Nothing – what would happen if we did nothing? (Or do we have to act now?)

9.

Appoint your advocate – This is the person who will speak for you and express your personal wishes if you are unable to. This will probably be your birth partner – life partner, husband, friend, or doula.

10. Consider Placenta Encapsulation (Placenta Pills) – Post birth, this can be a wonderful tonic to replenish lost nutrients and fortify the new mother.

Placenta can promote faster healing (especially after a traumatic birth), encourage lactation and

help prevent postnatal depression. I decided to train as a Placenta Specialist and offer Placenta Encapsulation services for other new mums after experiencing the wonderful benefits of taking the capsules myself.

To simply ‘go with the flow’ and hand over your birth experience to an institution is potentially to surrender your chance of being actively involved in the most amazing of life experiences. I have come to realise that my attitude of ‘going with the flow’ was borne out of uncertainty and ignorance of what lay ahead. I had never given birth before; I had nothing to compare it to. For others, it can be a mask to hide anxiety and fear of the unknown. Whilst we cannot control the unfolding events in childbirth, we can be in charge of our flow of birth, knowing the right preparation is in place and the right questions have been asked, rather than the flow of birth being dictated by another because we are in a frightened and disempowered position.

Whatever your birth experience, in the end, you can emerge from it peacefully and with fulfilment, knowing you were fully involved through every turn in the journey – the most exciting adventure life has on offer.

It’s too soon to see a solicitor

7. I have a solicitor but I can never get to speak to him

Solicitors can’t always be available straight away, but if your solicitor is continually unavailable and does not return your calls or answer your messages, then you should consider instructing a different solicitor who can make you more of a priority.

Solicitors are highly trained professionals with an expert knowledge of their field of law. That does not mean that they get it right 100% of the time, or that one particular individual is the solicitor best suited to you. If you are unhappy for any reason, you should try to raise it with your solicitor, with the managing partner of the practice, or get a second opinion from a different solicitor sooner rather than later.

It’s never too early to seek expert advice.

The sooner you are advised of all your options, the better equipped you are to make considered decisions.

2. If I go to see a solicitor, they’ll take matters out of my hands

A good solicitor will advise you fully of all your options and assist you where you request assistance, but will not railroad you into taking steps you do not wish to take.

A solicitor’s role is a supportive one. The decision rests with you whether to act on the advice given and a good solicitor will acknowledge that.

3. The sooner I see a solicitor, the more it will cost me

If you are in possession of all the facts and all your options, you are far more likely to be able to resolve matters swiftly and successfully, saving both time and expense.

You only need involve a solicitor when absolutely necessary.

4. Going to see a solicitor will just drag this out

If your solicitor is doing his or her job properly, the advice you are given and the action they take on your behalf should serve to resolve your matter more swiftly. If you feel the opposite is true, perhaps it’s time for a second opinion.

5. If I get a solicitor involved, it will all get nasty

The involvement of a solicitor should assist in diffusing a situation rather than inflaming it.

A solicitor will act without the emotional involvement you have and should actively attempt to reduce areas of contention.

8. I went to see a solicitor but I’m not very happy with the advice I’ve been given or the way she’s handling my case

9. I don’t think my solicitor is doing a very good job, but it’s too late to change now It’s never too late to seek a second opinion from another solicitor in confidence. If you are concerned about any aspect of your case, you should take independent advice immediately.

10. My solicitor says if I change solicitors now, it will damage my case.

This is unlikely to be true, except in restricted circumstances. You can seek a second opinion in confidence without your existing solicitor ever knowing and if you choose to transfer your instructions, your new solicitor can handle that for you.

6. My ex says we don’t need to “get legal” & involve solicitors

Does your ex partner or spouse have a hidden agenda in trying to prevent you from seeking legal advice? Even if you have reached an agreement between you, it is always advisable to have it checked over by a solicitor who will also help you to have the agreement made legally binding.
