Will I be voting? No. Why? Well it is not that I don’t care about community and values that we hold dear. I do!

It is because I don’t believe that it will make any difference. It seems to me that big business is the puppeteer behind the scenes whatever we vote for. Profit for me has got out of line with human values so I’ll stay in the silent minority until it becomes the silent majority. So nice to have the sun back! My swallows returned this weekend so I duly reopened the shed door and they are back at their nest again. They don’t seem bothered about politics at all lol.

Get ready for summer Over the last century, sunglasses have evolved to help us work, rest and play in bright conditions. Choosing the right sunglasses will give your eyes all the protection they need, but what features or specifications should you look for?

Lenses with full UVA and UVB protection will filter out the invisible ultraviolet radiation that can cause everything from sunburnt corneas to cataracts and cancer. All our sunglasses come with UV protection to the highest British and European standard and the UK’s UV400 and BSEN1836 marks also confirm lenses are fit for purpose. Sunglasses lenses come in many forms, each offering different benefits. Polarising lenses and anti-reflective coatings reduce glare from water, making them ideal for water sport enthusiasts. A wide range of lens materials are available, some of which are lightweight yet virtually shatter-proof, while photochromic lenses automatically adjust their tint depending on light levels. There’s more information on lens coatings in our ‘Putting your coat on’ feature, elsewhere in this newsletter.

happy to recommend frames that suit your facial shape and lifestyle requirements.

“A wide range of lens materials are available, some of which are lightweight yet virtually shatter-proof.” Did you know? Sunglasses owe much of their early popularity to Hollywood. Powerful studio lights caused red eyes among cast and crew, and sunglasses hid all the damage as well as providing celebrities welcome anonymity.

Eliza Pepperpot It’s on the Doorstep In this day and age we’re lucky that so much food is available to us, and are really spoilt for choice. But how many of you overlook local producers in favour of well known brands. I know cost is important as we all have a budget to work to; but believing in your local producers gives you the satisfaction of knowing that it has been made on the doorstep, and that the money you spend is also being generated back into the local economy. Needless to say, it is a misconception to think that the less you spend on a product the better value for money you are getting. In most cases, the product is of inferior quality, and full of additives to prolong its shelf life. Would you really want something sitting on your shelf for a year! Most of these products usually get forgotten about because they weren’t that good in the first place. After all, when something is good you want to eat it not leave it. Don’t you? When food is produced locally on a small scale, the care that has gone into making the product reflects the quality in the end. We somehow believe that because a product is a well known brand it is better. What is the psychology of thought behind this? Do we think it is safer to eat because hygiene standards are better in larger premises? Or do we somehow think the experts have made it, because the larger the company the more knowledge they have: we know the wrapper, so whatever’s in it must be good. Not necessarily so. In fact, all food producers must adhere to the same set of regulations governed by each local authority as well as the EU. Small producers are governed in the same way as large food manufacturers - the basic guidelines are, more or less, the same. I find the whole thing fascinating yet frustrating. The world is a small place today, with many of us travelling farther afield each year. Ironically, it is when we are in these foreign climes that we throw caution to the wind, and try all manner of weird and wonderful produce. Yet buy from a local producer in our own country. What! It is unthinkable. Bear in mind, readers, I do not tar everyone with the same brush; but for those who fall into this trap, have given them food for thought. I work alongside many local producers, and know the passion and drive they have to turn out a quality product. Food shopping patterns are changing, and moving back to a time when we bought only what we needed. But it takes time for change to happen, hopefully my words will give you some incentive to make these changes - or at least try. For this recipe I have chosen High Strothers’ rare breed pork sausage because of the quality of meat they produce and sell. Their shop is based at Gibside in the Market Square, and open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10:00am - 3:00pm For this recipe you will need: a large frying, an earthenware casserole dish or a large deep pan, a

12

sharp knife for both herbs as well as meat, plus a chopping board. the sausage in a circular shape. Fry the sausage in a large frying pan until golden brown on either side, remove from the pan and set aside - remove the skewer. Fry the onions in the same pan as the sausage, only for a few minutes, then deglaze the pan by adding some stock. This will remove all the meaty bits form the bottom of the pan.

Sausage with Beans Ingredients: 1 large circular ring of sausage - Cumberland or something of your choice 4 tins of white Haricot beans, if you prefer less beans then just use 3 2 onions chopped 2 tins of chopped tomatoes 1 1/2 pints beef stock made from 4 stock cubes if not using red wine - this enriches the flavour 4 cloves of crushed garlic - you can use a knife to finely chop the garlic if you don’t have a garlic crusher 1 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil 2 tbsp tomato puree 1/2 pint red wine - optional 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Salt and pepper Bouquet garni - a bunch of fresh herbs such as thyme, rosemary, bay leaf and parsley tied together with cotton or string. Or you can buy these ready prepared in the herb section of the grocery store, but fresh herbs are always best in this dish.

Place the sausage in whatever casserole dish or pan you have - large enough for the circle of sausage to fit, and deep enough to hold all the beans and liquid. Drain the beans and add to the pan along with the chopped tinned tomatoes, onions, beef stock, Worcesteshire sauce, red wine, onions, garlic, herbs. Season with salt and pepper. Place in the oven and cook for 45 - 50 minutes. Halfway through the cooking gently stir in the tomato puree and continue to cook.

Bon appetite!

Cottage Garden Favourites

I have always loved the cottage garden style – for me, it is simple, beautiful and charming. It has a certain feeling that lifts the spirits. Virtually anything can be grown in a cottage garden – it’s not just about lupins and delphiniums. The early cottage gardeners of the Middle Ages would grow mainly herbs and vegetables out of sheer necessity but over the centuries a more floral emphasis evolved into the chocolate box style we all know. The English rose is probably the epitome of the cottage garden style – their charm, beauty and heart lifting fragrance are difficult to beat. Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ is a particular favourite of mine – it produces deep rich pink rosette shaped flowers virtually all English rose ‘Gertrude Jek yll’ epitomises the cott age garden sty le summer. The scent is breath-taking and on a still day wafts across the garden- I often find myself making excuses to do gardening where I can catch its perfume! I also adore delphiniums – I don’t grow many – just one variety that I inherited when I bought my first home. I don’t know the name of the variety as there are so many and identification from photos is not so reliable. It has lustrous blue blooms with dark centres which last for up to 6 weeks – the secret is to apply copious amounts of good quality home- made compost around its hini ums stan d : Our lust rous blue delp hungry roots. Incredibly, the slugs up to the slug s don’t bother with this variety which is probably why it is the only survivor of the many types I have tried over the years. If anyone knows what variety it may be I’d be very interested to hear. Another superb, virtually hassle free gem in our cottage garden is phlox paniculata ‘Mount Fuji’. It is self-supporting, tidy, and freely offers its striking, white, gorgeous scented panicles of flowers over mid to late summer. The vivid white flowers fit in very nicely with most other flower colours so it appears in several places round Ad extension the various parts of our garden, providing continuity and rhythm.

At Gardener’s Cottage Plants we are primarily plantsmen and gardeners. We can offer sound Geraniums are probably the stalwarts of the cottage garden. BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS

As I wander round our cottage garden taking in the atmosphere, often on my way to some part of the garden in order to do something, I regularly find myself distracted by a tiny job that seems to be so utterly urgent that the original task I set out to do is ignored. Invariably, I Geranium ‘Pat ricia’ has eye catching dark cent red, enta flowers that last from June may also get distracted again in the to Sep temmag ber execution of the second task! This for me is part of the joy of being absorbed by the garden, trying to satisfy its every desire and usually failing miserably but totally escaping from the stresses of the outside world. It’s great news that they are talking about prescribing gardening on the National Health! Happy gardening to you all.

Tynedale Lions Club Tynedale Lions Club is based in Hexham. We are a group of men and women, from all walks of life, who freely give of our time to help local charities, good causes and deserving individuals. We raise tens of thousands of pounds each year to help many people in the community, and have great fun doing it. We are just one part of Lions International, the world’s largest service organisation. Whilst we do focus on serving the local community, we also contribute to life-saving national and international projects as they arise and particularly at times of crisis following natural disasters. Formed in 1977 the Club currently has 33 members and meets at Tynedale Golf Club at 7.45pm on the second and fourth Mondays in the month, excluding Bank Holidays. If you would like to see what we do or if you are thinking of joining us then do call Ian Cave on 01434 605936, visit our website at www.tynedalelionsclub.org or e-mail us at tynedalelionsclub@ gmail.com to receive more information. Our area covers that part of the Tyne Valley from Haydon Bridge in the west to Stocksfield in the east although some of our members do come from a much wider area. The Club aspires to doing good work in the community since our motto is “we serve”. Every year the Club organises Christmas parties for the elderly. Indeed many of our members also host monthly tea parties in their homes in association with Contact the Elderly. We are now also focussing on supporting those members of society who for whatever reason may feel vulnerable or who feel isolated. To this end the Club has teamed up with Helping Hands and St Cuthbert’s care accommodation in St Cuthbert’s Close Hexham and has launched a “community club” meeting every Thursday mornings from 10am to 12 am where anyone who may feel lonely or alone is welcome to come along and have a cup of coffee and a chat or perhaps play a game of cards. There are many similar clubs in and around Northumberland and the secret of their success is that those who do come along decide exactly what they would like to do and take control. Once established trips out and other activities can be arranged again to suit the wishes of the participants.

The success of the Beer Festival, our Santa’s Sleigh which tours the outlying villages around Hexham as well as Corbridge, Riding Mill and Stocksfield plus other fundraising activities means that we are able to donate an amazing sum of almost £40,000 a year to good causes and individuals. The Club will consider any deserving application for funding on merit, the majority of which as can be seen, goes into helping many deserving local causes. If you feel that you have some time to give to others then do think about becoming a Lion and joining the 1.35 million other Lions worldwide making things happen.

Our Club has a much longer association with the Tynedale Talking Newspaper for the visually impaired and partially sighted. Our volunteers read extracts from the Hexham Courant which are recorded and distributed. The Lions’ have been able to help by joining in street collections and have made donations to provide much needed funds to enable the purchase of new equipment incorporating digital technology now used to record onto the many light weight card readers which have replaced the outdated cassette tape machines which had outlived their usefulness.

Our main annual fundraising event is the Tynedale Beer Festival, which we organise in conjunction with our partners at Tynedale Rugby Club. This year will be our fourteenth Festival and will be held between Thursday 18th and Saturday 20th June at the rugby ground in Corbridge. We are expecting

Roger Clegg Outdoor Visitor Attractions and Events. Early spring until mid-autumn is the time of year with by far the greatest abundance of outdoor visitor attractions and events. In addition to the permanent sites of historic interest they range from country shows to reenactments to music gatherings to steam events to horse events and so on and so on. If you enjoy photographing people involved in this type of activity there is always an abundance of subjects at these events - I can really recommend it. I particularly enjoy the historic re-enactments and have so far been thoroughly entertained by men and women masquerading as second century Roman soldiers, Roman Cavalry, fourth century Roman soldiers repelling the invaders from across the seas, Vikings, Border Reivers and the Civil War. With the re-enactments you may also have the opportunity to learn about the lives of these long gone people – their crafts, weapons and body protection, food, medicine and treatments. The accuracy of the presentations and the eagerness to talk knowledgeably about life in their chosen era is tremendous.

doubt if most charges by the Roman soldiers ended with such concern over a possible injury to someone’s foot. Another source of great amusement and much laughter was the Terrier Racing at “The Show on the Wall” at Steel Rigg. One thing that struck most people as especially funny was the entry of a very young terrier. There were major problems getting him into the box for the start of the race – he was terrified and put up an heroic struggle. The fox’s tail was dragged across the course in front of the terriers and they were released. Out they shot and the race was completed in seconds. To the surprise, delight and mirth of the spectators the “terrified” young terrier ran straight back to the start and begged to be immediately put back into the box for the next race. The organizers duly obliged and he patiently and happily sat waiting for the next race.

Sometimes trying something with which you are not familiar can be surprisingly enjoyable. My life has seldom brought me into contact with the world of horses so I decided to go to the riding event at Linnels. It was more than worth the effort and really most enjoyable These events are not without their providing many good photographic humour. Kielder Ospreys - a soaring success For the last six years, the sight of ospreys soaring high above Kielder Water & Forest Park has brought much excitement to wildlife lovers in Northumberland. Having been extinct in the area for centuries, ospreys made a spectacular comeback in 2009, recolonising naturally in the Park and successfully breeding there ever since. Last year alone was record breaking for the Kielder ospreys, with eight young ospreys raised on three separate nests. And thanks to a concerted effort by Northumbrian Water and the Forestry Commission, the mix of forest and water - all 250 square miles of it, is perfect for the iconic species.

“The new platform can be viewed from the wildlife hide at Bakethin Nature Reserve and should a pair of ospreys choose to make this their new home, to have them in such close proximity is a fantastic opportunity for us.”

The birds feast on trout from the largest man-made lake in northern Europe, Kielder Water, and nest among the trees in England’s largest working forest. Distinctive for their habit of hovering for a few seconds over the water and then plunging feet first to the surface, ospreys were once a common sight across the North East. But by 1847 they had died out as a breeding bird in England due to decades of poaching and egg theft - and their Scottish cousins followed in 1916.

Closer examination found she had begun to look for a roost for the night and landed on an ‘island’ that was in fact a ship. Unhappy on that roost, the young bird took off to find a better place as it got dark but unfortunately the second ship she found was heading for the English Channel.

While the osprey’s history in this region may be somewhat shadowy, their presence in Kielder today is spectacular. very year, hundreds of nature fans flock to the Park to catch a glimpse of the fish-eating bird, which even stars in its own blog on the Visit Kielder website.

It was 11 hours and 135 nautical miles later that she realised her error at first light and had to cross virtually the whole of the Bay of Biscay again before making successful landfall in Spain.

And while all eyes are to the skies elsewhere, bird-watching enthusiasts at Kielder may soon have unrivalled viewing opportunities of the majestic osprey. For this season, Northumberland Wildlife Trust and Northumbrian Water have installed a new nesting platform for the Park’s best known inhabitant at Bakethin Nature Reserve at the north end of the dam. The hope is that a pair of ospreys will choose to take advantage of this new home, bringing people closer than ever to the lives of these

amazing birds. Janine Scott, Communications Advisor from Kielder Water & Forest Park, said: “The Kielder ospreys are a huge hit with visitors to the area and people delight in seeing the birds in their natural habitat.

Technology has also helped to reveal fascinating details to osprey watchers in the North East about the epic journeys the raptors make annually after they leave Northumberland. Tiny trackers were fitted to three of the young birds last year, in a bid to gain an insight into their hazardous migration to Africa. Data showed that unusually, one juvenile female did an about turn part way across the Bay of Biscay and headed for north east France.

Many more visitors watch the birds in their nests through a live camera feed into Kielder Castle cafe, or at Kielder Osprey Watch at Leaplish Waterside Park.

I SEE STRESS FREE VISION

She later crossed the Atlantic from southern Portugal to Morocco, landing on a fishing boat just short of the Moroccan coast! The young female will now remain in her wintering grounds for another year or two before returning to the UK to produce offspring of her own. With the technology to tell us where the birds are year round, the natural environment of Kielder and the work of the wildlife rangers to provide safe nest locations, the future is looking bright for the Kielder ospreys. Now the pressure is on for the birds that have recently returned to the Park this year to produce another family and continue the osprey success story. To find out more, go to www.visitkielder.com or follow the ospreys at www.kielderospreys.wordpress.com

Pregnancy niggles?

?selggin ycnangerP

Pregnancy aches & pains Aches or Pregnancy adverse foetal lie?& Pains and/or Adverse Foetal Lie Pregnancy should be a time full of joy, expectant planning and excited anticipation. Pregnancy after all is a miraculous event and bringing a new baby into the world is singularly the biggest life event many of us experience. However, pregnancy and ultimately birth is often marred with multitudinous concerns, particularly if previously you have experienced a difficult pregnancy or birth. When pregnant women approach me for advice, their ultimate goal is to increase the likelihood of a natural, drug free labour and birth – and by ensuring that their baby (and placenta) is lying in an optimal position, this objective becomes much more likely. These women often have no real complaints; they simply want to be sure they are in the best possible shape for the birth. Sometimes, however, there are existing problems which can range from pelvic aches and pains to adverse foetal presentation (posterior, transverse or breech lie). Sometimes a low lying placenta is the issue with its associated risks, with the threat of a C section being the final outcome.

obtaining a favourable foetal lie and when successful, the Webster Technique avoids the costs and/or risks of external cephalic version (ECV), C section, or vaginal trial of breech. I must state here, that Webster Technique is not a ‘treatment’ for adverse foetal positioning; it is a technique that balances the structural integrity of the pelvis and associated soft tissues which increases the available abdominal space thus reducing the inhibitory effect on foetal movement from constraint. Rebalancing the structural integrity of the pregnant woman can have other beneficial effects in terms of placental positioning. A low lying placenta can often move up and out the way of the cervix when tension in the soft tissues is removed. As the uterus expands with the developing baby, the placenta will often move out of the way of the cervix anyway, but in the presence of intrauterine constraint this may not occur as effectively. As a side effect of rebalancing the musculoskeletal system, many pregnancy aches and pains can be ameliorated along the way. As part of a protocol for optimising baby’s position and easing various aches and pains, there are many different exercises that can be utilised to help. Many of these exercises can be found on a website called ‘Spinning Babies’. This website can be tricky to navigate and deciding which of the many exercises to use can be confusing, however I would always advise which particular exercises would be appropriate for your situation, or not, as the case may be.

Whatever the concern, it is important to assess the structural balance of the pregnant mum’s spine and pelvis. Any imbalance in the pelvis in particular can result in abnormal tension in the pelvic musculature, ligaments and fascia which can result in intrauterine constraint. Intrauterine constraint is defined as any force external to the developing foetus that obstructs the normal movement of the foetus, and in many instances the available space in the abdomen and uterus is reduced because of abnormal pressure and tension in the soft tissues.

Pregnancy should be one of the most memorable and special times in your life. However, pregnancy can be stressful especially if a previous pregnancy or birth has been difficult. Even the healthiest of pregnancies can benefit from additional care to increase the likelihood of a natural, drug free labour and birth. Find out how chiropractic at Aligned can enhance your pregnancy, and ultimately, birth experience. We would love to help, why not give us a call?

If you would like to find out more about how we can help you or your family call us on: 01434 605 688 or visit our website: aligned-chiropractic.co.uk

Lastly, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can be a great tool for many obstetric situations and especially for babies with breech presentation. If applied correctly, a technique called moxibustion on a specific point called bladder 67 can have amazing results in terms of encouraging a ‘head down’ position. A randomised controlled clinical study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, November 11, 1998 indicates that at approximately 70% of breech babies will turn using this method. Acupuncture and acupressure can also be really helpful to facilitate l abour in overdue babies. Bear in mind that ‘scan due dates’ have an inherent inaccuracy of 8 days, so your real ‘due date’ in my experience is more accurately calculated using your LMP (last menstrual period) date providing you had a regular cycle beforehand.

Intrauterine constraint is responsible for a number of structural defects of the craniofacial and peripheral skeleton including plagiocephaly With my particular interest and specific training in fertility, pregnancy, (misshaped head), micrognathia (small lower jaw), congenital hip and paediatrics, I would love to help you optimise your pregnancy and dislocation, and talipes equinovarus (club foot). Congregational Church ( Tebbs Chapel)

Sadly, in July 2015 the combined Winlaton United Reform and Wesleyan Methodist Church will close their doors for the last time ending two hundred years of nonconformist worship in Winlaton. It has been recorded that the Wesleyan Methodists first used as a place of worship the long room of the ‘Oak Tree’ public house and Rev. Hodgson Casson frequently visited Winlaton and preached in the ‘Oak Tree’, When voting at a Parliamentary election, Casson after giving his name and address to the polling clerk was asked his occupation, he replied “ A fisher of men”, “What”, said the clerk. It was treated as a joke he was playing at the expense of the clergy. Then he was entreated to give a proper description of his calling. But nothing further could be got from him but “I am a fisher of men”. So that was the occupation inserted and in the poll books it stands to this day :- “ Hodgson Casson, fisher of men”. The result of Casson’s preaching in the long room became the scene of much Christian activity, which eventually led to the opening of a chapel in Front Street and later a new chapel in Litchfield Lane was opened for public worship on February 27th. 1868. At this period Methodism was certainly becoming a living force in the village, membership was increasing and the activities of the church and Sunday school were becoming severely hampered by the lack of accommodation. In 1924 the congregation, having amongst them an active body of workers, decided to remedy this drawback by enlarging the building and adding a new door and stairs.

Rev. Tebb in carriage nearest camera in 1911

The first Congregational chapel was built in The Garth in 1829 and known as ‘Providence Chapel’. The project of a new church was decided by the Pastor Revd. Tebb. The Chapel was built on the site of the former National School at a cost of £2000 and opened for public worship on 28 April 1909. This site, now occupied by ‘Thornbury’ apartments, is one of the most historic in Winlaton. A chapel dedicated to St. Anne was the first place of Christian worship in Winlaton. The chapel stood until 1569 when it was destroyed by the troops of Elizabeth I during the rebellion of the northern Catholic Earls. Ambrose Crowley built a replacement to St. Anne’s in 1706 with contributions from his workmen on the original site. By 1806 this had fallen into decay. In 1816 it was replaced by a national school which remained in use until about 1898.

TUESDAY Rev. Tebb in carriage nearest camera in 1911

In 1913 Rvd. Tebb said in a sermon that he would like to see the church free of debt, which at that time was £200.The following Saturday he was at Blaydon Station taking the train to Newcastle and spoke to Joseph Cowen ( son of Joseph & grandson of Sir Joseph ). Mr. Cowen said his sister Miss Jane Cowen had told him of the debt and that if Revd. Tebb would come over to the Chronicle office he would write him a cheque to cover the amount. Revd. Tebb fully expected he would be the first person to tell the congregation this wonderful news, but when he got back to Winlaton everyone in the village had already read the news in the Chronicle! The Congregationalists joined the United Reform Church in the late 20th. century and were joined by the Methodist congregation when the Litchfield Lane chapel was sold.

And they’re off! Spring has sprung; as growth returns it’s amazing how lighter nights and some sunshine makes us feel so much better. Last time we looked at the importance of putting plans in place in order to make things happen, and how to overcome motivation killers such as lack of confidence focus and direction and re-focus to achieve set goals. With everything springing into life around us; in this article I want to talk about ‘growth‘– whether you are up and running in business, raring to go with a new venture or have personal plans to achieve. New and existing business Many people think of success as maximising sales, this is all very positive and a good indicator of success but have you thought about your ‘profit’? Do you know which of your products/services make the most money? Often a tough question to ask yourself is “Are you doing what you enjoy or what is most profitable? Work out your profit margins and re-focus. Could you offer a higher profit product or service? It’s vital to know your markets and customer base, people don’t always want cheap. Are you maximising your existing customer base? Is there scope to reward these customers with a special offer and tempt a repeat purchase? Have you reviewed your marketing and advertising recently and do you measure where your customers are coming from? Use your budget wisely to maximise results and don’t be afraid to negotiate when giving your advertisers repeat business, get the best deal you can. Looking at your on-going business costs is also important. Is your workspace working for you and is it value for money? Think about reviewing your suppliers and negotiate better buying deals as your business grows. Are your staff as efficient and productive as they can be and how can you help them progress? One way is to take advantage of local and national training offers from colleges and training providers.

These are just some of the many things you can do to fine tune a business and increase profitability but it’s a constant cycle, a true labour of love but one that’s worth pursuing in most cases. Personal Growth There are many things in life that people want, a bigger house, to be slimmer, job satisfaction, plenty of money…what to do?

Beautifully fitted bathrooms and kitchens

You need to decide what it is that you want, and what you need to do to achieve it. Usually the things we want take work and it can be a slow process. Perhaps you are tired of your job and you’d love the freedom of self-employment - but can you cope with the risk of nonguaranteed income? Think, is this really what I want?

We offer an extensive range of services, all completed to the highest standard, fully insured and guaranteed so you can trust the work we do.

Let us come to you!

Like all things the road to changing things can be very challenging at first. But once you start seeing some progress, the path to success seems less daunting somehow.

Setting goals can be a great way to achieve personal and business growth; you can start with the big picture and break it down into achievable steps. It’s sensible you set goals that are achievable or this can lead to demotivation. The SMART goal setting system is one very commonly used:

PAINTBALL TARGET PRACTICE

HOUSE TOURS

Morning sickness should be called ‘all day’ sickness..... Anyone experiencing morning sickness during pregnancy will probably attest to the fact that it strikes at any time of the day, often all day long but will eventually subside around the end of the first trimester. I recall being pregnant with A – morning sickness wasn’t an issue; I couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. During my pregnancy with C, the universe decided to have a little fun, but for the most part the nausea came in waves and would ease, and it finally disappeared by week 12. With B, I had to do everything in my power to stop throwing up on my unwitting practice members during their chiropractic visits, all the while smiling through my misery. Finally at the end of the 14th week the nausea passed and I felt fabulous. What causes the nausea is a hormone called beta human chorionic gonadotrophin (bHCG) which increases as the foetus grows and is the marker for pregnancy in urine and blood tests. The higher the quantity of bHCG, the stronger the pregnancy, but also the more nauseas you’ll feel. Multiple pregnancies produce much higher levels of bHCG and the first trimester can feel endless. As the levels of bHCG decrease towards the end of the first trimester, nausea will also generally decrease. Nausea in pregnancy can be exacerbated with fatigue, stress, anxiety and worry about the pregnancy. My pregnancy with B was riddled with anxiety as I had suffered 2 miscarriages before falling pregnant with her and I was on ‘tenter hooks’ until at least the 16th week. In terms of energy, I was running two practices, practising in one and taking care of two young children – no wonder I felt so bilious. So what can you do to ease to make ease the intensity of early pregnancy nausea? For me, eating regular small meals would prevent drops in blood sugar which would make the nausea worse, and staying hydrated with plenty of water. My lifesavers especially during practice time were ginger chews; I ate so many I thought I would turn into one. I also drank raw ginger tea created from grating fresh ginger and adding boiled filtered water and occasionally took ginger tablets.

Homeopathic remedies can also be useful particularly Nux Vomica 6X or Ipecac 30x. Gentle exercise such as walking, especially in fresh air can also make you feel better as will getting more rest and sleep. Avoid eating spicy, fatty or fried foods or drinking caffeine. Strong smells can also aggravate pregnancy nausea so limiting your use of perfumes or other strong smelling substances are a good idea. At the end of the day, pregnancy nausea is generally self limiting unless you have a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum where you have difficulty keeping any fluids or food down and this can be very serious. This condition does not just affect the mother. Babies born to mothers battling hyperemesis have a variety of different obstacles to overcome. The infants of mothers with hyperemesis may be born prematurely, be small for gestational age, have significantly lower birth weights, or have 5-minute Apgar scores of < 7. The cause of this condition is not fully understood, but may be attributed to pregnancy hormones, gut dysfunction, excessive thyroid hormones in the blood stream, serotonin, liver abnormalities, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies, asthma, allergies, Helicobacter pylori infection (a bacterial infection in the stomach), or psychosomatic causes. At any rate, priming your body with good nutrition, supplementation and other healthy lifestyle choices before you decide to conceive so that you can be as healthy as possible is the key to reducing the incidence of being unwell during your pregnancy.

My other special little trick to use was regular self administered acupressure on an acupuncture point called Pericardium 6 (Pc6) which can be found on the inside of the wrist (Google for a picture to check location). An improvisation here would be wearing travel sickness bands as they are designed to apply pressure to Pc6 to prevent nausea from motion. Deficiencies in B6 and Iron can also contribute to early pregnancy nausea - I love the Floradix liquid iron formula (Floradix Floravital is the gluten free alternative). It’s all food-based and contains B vitamins, Iron, and is nonconstipating. This is ideal to take through your entire pregnancy.

A Wall of Picassos

Due to the loss of storage space in Corbridge, the gallery is holding a major one-off sale on-line www.balmangallery.com, with discounts of up to 25% on many items. ‘We are delighted to be expanding into Hallgate Galleries, Hexham,’ explains Director, Andy Balman. ‘Together with Haslam’s Gallery and James Alder Gallery, we’re providing a wide range of artistic styles under one roof. It’s good for our customers too, as we’re holding a sale. We’re inviting customers to “make us an offer” on artwork on-line, a great opportunity to buy that longed-for piece of art.’ Large and small artworks, glass, ceramics and jewellery are reduced.

Pablo Picasso was a progressive and innovative printmaker and the Modern Masters exhibition features an exciting range of his iconic, original prints, reflecting the breadth and genius of his art. An entire wall in the show is dedicated to Picasso.

Leigh Shepherd Brooch - Was £17.50, Now £13.13

‘One Night in Paris,’ Marc Chagall The Modern Masters show at the Laing Gallery (free entry) is attracting large numbers, many choosing to see the ‘Conscience and Conflict’ show (entry fee) and Picasso’s ‘Weeping Woman’ at the same time. Picasso, Chagall, Matisse and Miro were drawn to the Parisian art scene and artistic experimentation both, making this a groundbreaking show.

‘Une Nuit a Paris,’ Chagall

Marc Chagall’s ‘Une Nuit a Paris’ captures the Parisian nightlife well – much of it centred around Montmartre in the early 20th century.

‘Two Women at the Window,’ Picasso

Miro - The Colours of Catalan Circus Theme: Modern Masters Amongst Miro’s prints are superb examples of his seemingly child-like style – he used brilliant, Catalan colours combined with simple forms. Miro frequently met the other great painters and artists living in Paris - the buzzing centre of arts in the late 19th and early 20th century. Miro, ‘Ubu Roi VII’

These artists had subjects in common, such as the circus, but their differing styles are a pleasure to compare when exploring the show. The exhibition runs until May 31st and is a rare chance to browse and buy original prints by these great artists. L’Enterrement de Pierrot,’ Matisse
