President’s Report

Brothers and Sisters,

As we enter the new year, I hope you all had a happy holiday season. I also want to thank you for all that we have accomplished together last year.

2022 was a big year for our union. Through it all, we have remained strong by standing up for each other and fighting for a public transportation system that works for everyone. Read more about this year's highlights on page 4.

Last fall, we made a difference in the lives of working families by helping elect pro-labor, protransit candidates across Massachusetts. We're especially proud to have supported Governor Maura Healey and State Auditor Diana DiZoglio – two strong leaders who value our union and the workers we represent. Learn more about our election victories on page 14.

Local 589 also held our own elections this year. I'm truly honored to continue serving as your president, and I'm excited to serve alongside the rest of our executive board. I know I speak for all our members when I say we will miss our three retiring board members tremendously: Pat Hogan, Brian Walsh, and John Clancy. Read more about these three men and catch up on our union election on pages 6 and 7.

As we turn up the thermostat and dig out our snow shovels, we want to thank everyone who joined us for two wonderful events when the weather was a lot warmer: our annual golf outing and our Family Fun Day. Enjoy some sunny photos from these events on pages 8-13.

None of our success as a union would be possible without the hard work and dedication of you, our members. Thank you for everything you do to keep our communities moving forward. I hope you were able to take some time to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with your loved ones this holiday season. Happy New Year!

In solidarity,
CARMEN’S QUARTERLY • WINTER 2023 3

Member Spotlight

Community is at the heart of everything we do in the Carmen's Union – and as three of our longtime members and union leaders prepare to enjoy a highlydeserved retirement, it's what they say has defined their time in the union.

Pat Hogan, outgoing Division 3 delegate, has spent almost 30 years as a member of the Carmen's Union. Some of his most cherished memories are organizing Christmas and retirement parties back when he was a barn captain in the Charleston area. For Pat, these gatherings were an opportunity to take the pulse of the membership and find out if there was anything he could do to help a member out. "You'd see something that would better the job for someone, and you'd say something about it or talk to somebody about it and try to get it fixed", said Pat.

The same drive to make every day on the job better for his fellow union members has fueled John Clancy, the outgoing Recording Secretary, throughout his 30+

years in the union. One of John's proudest memories of making a difference for Carmen's Union members was when he was a union steward and was able to help a bus driver who'd had some minor safety issues in the past keep his job. "I said, let's give this guy another chance and make sure he's trained up and ready to go", said John – resulting in the driver working another six years with no safety problems whatsoever. "Advocating for the members is definitely a huge highlight of being part of the union," said John.

Pat, John, and retiring S.M.I delegate Brian Walsh are all proud spokesmen for the union way of life. "The union helped me buy a house, and provide for my family," said John. "It's a secure, steady life."

Pat echoed the same gratitude for everything his membership in the Carmen's Union has helped him do and achieve. "I was fortunate to have a union that represented us, and got us fair wages and benefits. It meant everything to me."

LOCAL 589 ATU 6

In addition to good wages and family-sustaining benefits, the Carmen's Union has given these three men friendships that will last a lifetime. These friendships have helped these three men relate to and connect with their union brothers and sisters not just at work but in life. "I think it's more rewarding than anything when you can help a person with issues they're having at home," said Pat. As we approach the thick of winter, a time when taking care of our mental health is crucial, the experiences of John, Pat, and Brian

demonstrate that union membership and involvement are one of the best ways to improve your physical, mental, and emotional health.

From all of us in the Carmen's Union, we wish John, Pat, and Brian a very happy and fulfilling retirement. We are so grateful for the tremendous contributions these men have made to our union throughout the years. We look forward to their continued involvement in our union family as they transition to a new phase of life.

Thank you, John, Pat, and Brian – we wish you the best!

Union Election

In December, Local 589 held elections for several key leadership positions. Thank you to all our members who voted and who ran for office. Our union is stronger when we all actively participate. Together, our newly elected and re-elected officers will help lead us into an exciting future.

"I was fortunate to have a union that represented us, and got us fair wages and benefits. It meant everything to me." – John Clancy

That's why we were so happy to celebrate Family Fun Day this year at Canobie Lake Park. We had a wonderful time coming together with our loved ones for games, food, and fun.

Celebrating Election Victories

In November, Massachusetts voters elected a wave of pro-labor, pro-transit candidates who value our union and the workers we represent. We're proud that so many of Local 589's endorsed candidates won their races.

We're also proud that the Fair Share Amendment passed, creating a fairer tax system to invest in our public transit, our schools, and our future.

This will help us meet the challenges facing our transportation system and improve the lives of working people.

With some races decided by a single vote, every vote mattered. Thank you to all our members who voted, volunteered, and made a difference. When union workers have a voice in our elections, we deliver results.

Congratulations to the following labor champions:

• Maura Healey, Governor

• Kim Driscoll, Lieutenant Governor

• Andrea Campbell, Attorney General

• Diana DiZoglio, Auditor

• William Galvin, Secretary of State

• Chris lannella, Governor's Council
