President’s Report

Brothers and Sisters,

As we kick-off the new year, remember to keep yourself safe in cold weather conditions. Stay hydrated and dress in layers that can be adjusted, as needed, throughout the day.

As we near the end of the year, we are proud to look back at everything that happened in 2024. Members at several garages received awards for safe driving, our executive board hosted another successful golf tournament, and we congratulated the first-ever graduates of the MBTA’s new apprenticeship program. Take a look back with us on pages 4-5.

I am also happy to point you towards some scholarship opportunities, available to high school seniors of members in good standing. These awards range from $500 to $8,000 so be sure to take a look at page 8 for more information.

Our union would not be as strong as it is without our members staying actively involved. Thank you for attending meetings, staying up to date with the latest union news, and performing at the highest level while on the job. This edition, we welcome new members and share the latest news on pages 9 and 10!

The executive board remains dedicated to our members, and as always, we welcome your feedback. Please join us at monthly membership meetings and feel free to reach out if you need assistance or have any questions. Thank you for your ongoing support!

CARMEN'S UNION LOCAL 589 HOLIDAY DONATIONS

This holiday season, members of the Local 589 Executive Board visited Rosie’s Place to present a donation on behalf of the membership. Rosie's Place is a women's shelter in Boston that provides resources and support to underserved members of the community. The E-Board also made a generous toy donation on behalf of the membership to Brightlife Recovery. This organization provides assistance to people with mental health challenges as well as drug and alcohol recovery services. We are proud to be able to support these important causes in our community!

RETIREMENT AFTER 18 YEARS OF SERVICE

After 18 years of dedicated service as a repairer at Riverside Station, Doug Roberts has retired. At his retirement celebration, Local 589 Equipment Maintenance Delegate John Mersereau presented him with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the union. Congratulations, Doug! Enjoy your retirement!

REMOVAL OF SLOW ZONES

Local 589 President Jim Evers joined Governor Maura Healey to celebrate the removal of “slow zones” at the T in December 2024. Thank you to our members for your dedication to rebuilding the system and improving transit throughout Boston. The removals of slow zones will attract increased ridership to the T and provide economic opportunities that will benefit all of Massachusetts.
