The spring season is here and our members continue to proudly service the community.
There's always a buzz in the air as the warm weather shows up in New England. Our operators know better than anyone how the members of our community utilize public transit to enjoy warm weather activities. As crowds may swell throughout the summer, it is as important as ever to ensure our members stay safe.
Our executive board has been working to move legislation forward to protect public transit workers in Massachusetts. Reported assaults have continued to increase over the past year and we won't stand for it. We are proud to see our bill moving through the state legislature, and need your help to ensure it crosses the finish line. Check out pages 4-5 to see how you can get involved.
In this edition, we are proud to feature members at Nubian Station. Our bus operators get riders where they need to go, whether they are members of the Roxbury community or just stopping by. Flip to pages 6-7 to see some great photos of our members at Nubian Station.
Union updates, our In Memoriam section, Tweets of Praise, recognition of 50-year members, and a spotlight on recent retirees can all be found at the back of this issue. Please enjoy this edition of our quarterly newsletter. It's thanks to you,
our members, that we have so much pride and gratitude for this Union.
Here's to a summer of unity, dedication to serving our community, and more reasons to be proud members of Carmen's Local 589.
In solidarity, Jim Evers PresidentOver 6,000 Brothers and Sisters of Local 589 work hard to keep the city and state moving. But in the past year, countless members have been violently attacked while on the job.
Bill H.4355, sponsored by Rep. Joseph McGonagle, would provide swift and effective consequences should an assault on a public transit worker occur. This bill has support from legislators, but we need your advocacy to get it across the finish line.
Public transit workers are under attack and we must protect them. Not a day goes by that we don't hear a story about a public transit worker being punched, spit on, verbally abused, or worse. Take action now: Write to your legislators and ask them to support Bill H.4355. Together we can stop assaults and keep our Brothers and Sisters safe. Scan this QR code to support Bill H.4355
Thank you to legislators who have supported this bill, and who have worked tirelessly to move it forward in the House.

The Carmen's Union Local 589 Executive Board visited Nubian Station this spring to talk to our hard-working members there. Our bus operators service 16 bus routes that run through Nubian Station every day. Their commitment to providing excellent public transit ensures that riders traveling to and from the Roxbury community arrive at their destinations safely and on-time.
In March, the Local 589 Executive Board presented a signed basketball to Governor Maura Healey to commemorate our collaboration and teamwork in securing a historic agreement for the members of Local 589. Our partnership with the governor and the MBTA brought immediate improvements for operators and maintenance professionals alike.
The MBTA needs our skilled and dedicated workforce in order to run smoothly, and that means ensuring our members receive the wages and benefits they deserve. Thanks to the governor as well as the MBTA General Manager Phil Eng and Secretary of Transportation Monica Tibbits-Nutt, who were present to represent their respective organizations, we have accomplished a major feat. We look forward to our continued work together.
