A Message from President Jim Evers
Brothers and Sisters,
We have had a great summer together from getting out on the course at our Annual Golf Tournament to competing at the MBTA's Bus Roadeo. I hope you're ready to bring the energy into election season as we close in on a significant presidential election year. More information about voting in November and legislation impacting transit workers in the Commonwealth can be found on page 9.
I was recently appointed to a new Labor Advisory Council created by Governor Healey and I am honored to represent Local 589 at the table. This council is the first of its kind with a goal of connecting labor representatives directly with policymakers to share our needs and concerns. I am proud to join this group of labor leaders and I will always advocate for the best interests of our members.
Congratulations to our recent apprenticeship graduates! Your hard work is valued and we can't wait to see what you do with your futures. Check out photos from the 2024 Apprentice Graduation ceremony on pages 6-7.
As we head into the colder months ahead, I wish you and your families good health and high spirits. Our union remains steadfast in its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the membership.
In solidarity,
Jim Evers President
Our Annual Golf Tournament at Brookmeadow Country Club this September was a great success! Thank you to all of our brothers and sisters who participated in this year's event and supported Local 589’s C.O.P.E. (Committee on Political Education) fund. The camaraderie we share at this annual event speaks to the solidarity of our union and our forward progress together.
Congratulations to our winning foursome!
Congratulations to our EIGHT apprentices for graduating the Rail Vehicle Maintenance Technician training program at the MBTA this August! This program, made possible thanks to Local 589 Equipment Maintenance Delegate John Mersereau and the Local 589 Executive Board, is the first year-long program of its kind. Apprentices, we celebrate your achievements and look forward to seeing you build a career in public transit. Your dedication to safe and efficient transportation for our communities sets you apart.

The Harris-Walz campaign is the voice of the working people in the 2024 Presidential Election. Make no mistake, Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are the best choice to keep working people at the forefront of policy and decision-making. Working people deserve a president who will advocate for their basic rights, including fair wages and a safe work environment. Be sure to do your research and cast your vote in the upcoming election.
