Voorwoord

Ze kwamen 79 jaar geleden uit de Verenigde Staten van Amerika met één doel hierheen: Europa bevrijden, het herstellen van onze vrijheid om onze eigen toekomst te bepalen, ons bevrijden van een nazi-ideologie die leidde tot ontmenselijking, tot moord op miljoenen. Ze kwamen in grote getalen en slaagden in hun missie. Velen brachten daarvoor grote offers, waarvan helaas ook zeer velen het grootste offer: hun leven.

Al onze bevrijders verdienen onze dank, zeker al diegenen die meestreden en hun leven lieten. Het eerbetoon aan hen is niet tijdgebonden, want ook hun offer is eeuwig. En het eerbetoon kent vele vormen, van het in privésfeer adopteren van een graf tot het in het openbaar houden van officiële herdenkingen. De Stichting Eerbetoon Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial doet dit door het jaarlijks organiseren van dit concert en het levend houden van de verhalen van onze bevrijders.

Muziek is óók een krachtige vorm van communicatie, een medium om ons te helpen herinneren, om ons in gedachten dichtbij onze bevrijders te brengen. Dit concert benutten wij om de verhalen en herinneringen door te geven, vooral aan nieuwe generaties die geen ooggetuigen meer kennen. Dat doen we door in het programma verhalen van mensen die hier in Margraten begraven zijn te laten vertellen. Maar ook door het educatieprogramma dat de philharmonie zuidnederland op

diverse Nederlandse scholen brengt. Het betrekken van jongere generaties is daarmee een vast onderdeel van onze doelstelling. De bestaande samenwerking met het symfonieorkest (educatie) wordt de komende jaren uitgebreid met de samenwerking met de professionele orkesten van de Nederlandse Strijdkrachten. Dit jaar zijn we verheugd dat de Koninklijke Militaire Kapel ‘Johan Willem Friso’ het spits afbijt. In het samenstellen van het programma kregen we van hen veel support en alle medewerking. Ook bijzonder is de samenwerking met de solisten Nico Wouterse (*Heerlen) en de nog jonge Emma Kok (*Kerkrade) uit onze regio.

Onze Stichting werkt momenteel aan een meerjarige concertserie die de transitie van het herdenken met mensen die de komst van vrijheid zelf meemaakten naar herdenken met mensen die alleen het leven in vrijheid kennen markeert. Daarin zullen we blijven samenwerken met de phiharmonie zuidnederland én de korpsen van onze strijdkrachten. We hopen daarmee inhoud te kunnen blijven geven aan ons doel: het eren van onze bevrijders in het algemeen, de Amerikaanse bevrijders die hun leven gaven en hier begraven zijn in het bijzonder.

Foreword

They came here, from the United States of America, 79 years ago with one goal: to liberate Europe, to restore our freedom to determine our own future, to free us from a Nazi ideology that led to dehumanization, to the murder of millions. They came in large numbers and succeeded in their mission. Many made great sacrifices for this, of which unfortunately very many made the greatest sacrifice: they gave their lives.

All our liberators deserve our gratitude, especially all those who fought and lost their lives. The homage to them is not time-bound, for their sacrifice, too, is eternal. And the tribute takes many forms, from privately adopting a grave to holding official commemorations in public. The ‘Eerbetoon Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial’ Foundation does this by organizing this annual concert and keeping the stories of our liberators alive.

Music is also a powerful form of communication, a medium to help us remember, to bring us close in thought to our liberators. We use this concert to pass on the stories and memories, especially to new generations who no longer can speak to eyewitnesses. We do this by telling stories of people who are buried here in Margraten. But also through the education program that the South Netherlands Philharmonic brings to various Dutch schools.

Involving younger generations is therefore an integral part of our objective. The existing collaboration with the Philharmonic orchestra (education) will be expanded in the coming years with collaboration with the professional orchestras of the Dutch Armed Forces. This year we are pleased that the Royal Military Band ‘Johan Willem Friso’ is kicking off. We received a lot of support and cooperation from them in putting together the program. Also special is the collaboration with the soloists Nico Wouterse (*Heerlen) and our young star Emma Kok (*Kerkrade) both from the Limburg region.

Our Foundation is currently working on a multi-year concert series that marks the transition from commemorating with people who experienced the arrival of freedom themselves to commemorating with people who only know life in freedom. We will continue to work together with the phiharmonie zuidnederland and the mus American liberators who gave their lives and are buried here in Margraten in particular.

Blijven herdenken

12 september is een historische datum. Dit is de dag waarop de bevrijding van Nederland in 1944 in Mesch, onderdeel van onze gemeente, startte. Jaarlijks herdenken wij deze gebeurtenis op verschillende momenten en manieren, waaronder het Liberation Concert. Herdenken is van onschatbaar belang. In tijden waarin de wereld voortdurend verandert, vormt herdenken een anker dat ons verbindt met onze geschiedenis. Dat ons de kracht geeft om te blijven geloven in een vreedzame toekomst voor iedereen.

In Nederland kwamen de bevrijders in 1944 als eerste in onze gemeente de grens over. Adoptanten, inwoners, ondernemers, verenigingen en stichtingen van Eijsden-Margraten zijn sterk verbonden met deze soldaten. Hun moed, opoffering en toewijding vormen een bron van inspiratie voor ons allen. Het is onze verantwoordelijkheid om hun nagedachtenis levend te houden en hun erfenis van vrijheid te koesteren.

Het Liberation Concert is niet alleen een muzikaal eerbetoon, maar ook een symbool van onze verbondenheid als gemeenschap. Samen staan we stil bij het verleden en vieren we het heden. Bedankt dat u vandaag aanwezig bent bij dit muzikaal eerbetoon. Laten we allemaal de boodschap van vrijheid en vrede blijven uitdragen. Zodat deze essentiële waarden blijven voortleven, niet alleen in ons hart, maar ook in onze daden.

Remembrance Never Stops

September 12 is an historic date. It marks the beginning of the liberation of the Netherlands, in the humble village of Mesch in our municipality, in 1944. Every year, we commemorate this event at various times and in various ways, one of which is the Liberation Concert. It is impossible to put a value on the importance of remembrance. In our ever-changing world, remembrance is the anchor that connects us to our history. It is the life force that feeds our hope for a peaceful future for all.

In 1944, we were the first municipality in the Netherlands in which the liberators set foot. Eijsden-Margraten’s adopters, residents, business owners, associations, and foundations have a strong affinity with these soldiers, whose courage, sacrifice, and dedication inspire us all. It is our responsibility to keep their memory alive and cherish the freedom they gave us.

The Liberation Concert is not only an homage set to music but also a symbol of the strong ties within our community. It is an occasion for us to commemorate the past and celebrate the present, together. Thank you for joining this musical homage. Let us all spread a message of freedom and peace, so that these foundational values may live on in our hearts and be embodied in our actions.

Namens de American Battle Monuments Commission heten wij u van harte welkom op de Nederlandse

Amerikaanse Begraafplaats. Wij zijn vereerd dat u aanwezig bent bij deze 17e editie van het Liberation Concert ter ere van de bevrijding van Limburg en Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

ABMC heeft de plechtige plicht om 26 permanente Amerikaanse militaire begraafplaatsen en 32 federale gedenktekens, monumenten en markeringen te onderhouden ter ere van de moed en opoffering van Amerikanen die in het buitenland stierven terwijl ze vochten voor de vrijheid. Al 100 jaar zorgt ABMC ervoor dat de herinneringen van degenen die in het buitenland zijn gesneuveld en met wie ze hebben gediend, nooit zullen verdwijnen. Dit jaar vieren we het honderdjarig bestaan van ons bureau, maar onze missie is tijdloos.

Wij zijn dankbaar voor de bijzondere relatie die wij hebben met de Nederlandse bevolking, de Provincie Limburg en de gemeente Eijsden-Margraten. Wij waarderen uw inzet bij het eren van de militairen die hier op de Nederlandse Amerikaanse Begraafplaats worden herdacht.

On behalf of the American Battle Monuments Commission, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the Netherlands American Cemetery. We are honoured to have you join us for this 17th edition of the Liberation Day Concert celebrating the liberation of Limburg and the Netherlands during World War II.

ABMC holds the sacred duty of maintaining 26 permanent American military cemeteries and 32 federal memorials, monuments and markers honouring the courage and sacrifice of Americans who died overseas fighting for freedom. For 100 years ABMC has ensured that the memories of those who fell abroad and those they served with, never die. We celebrate our agency’s Centennial this year, but our mission is timeless.

We are grateful for the special relationship we have with the Dutch people, the Province of Limburg, and the township of Eijsden-Margraten. We appreciate your commitment in honouring the service members commemorated here at the Netherlands American Cemetery.

Onbekend terrein

Mijn eerste volle jaar als gouverneur van deze prachtige provincie bracht me op plaatsen die ik nog nooit eerder bezocht of gezien had. Ik bevond me op ‘onbekend terrein’, zou je kunnen zeggen, dat ik nog moest ontdekken. Vol verrassingen en bijzondere inzichten in de rijke cultuur en samenleving van Limburg.

Bijna tachtig jaar geleden betraden geallieerde troepen dit ‘onbekende terrein’ op een heel andere manier. Ze kwamen terecht in een verscheurd en verbrijzeld Europa dat niets leek op het oude continent van grandeur en geschiedenis dat ze kenden uit hun schoolboeken.

‘Onbekend terrein’ (Unknown Territory) is ook de titel van een muziekstuk van de Limburgse componist Mark Pütz. Een stuk dat te horen is op het Liberation Concert 2023. Pütz legt het zelf als volgt uit: “Hoe is het om als individu - weg van familie en vrienden - in een ander werelddeel aan te komen, niet wetend wat je daar te wachten staat? Om misschien wel je leven te geven, hoewel je natuurlijk hoopt de strijd te overleven. Het was dát gevoel van landen op ‘onbekend terrein’ dat ik wilde uitdrukken met mijn muziek”.

Toen ik de afgelopen dagen over dit concert nadacht, moest ik steeds denken aan de woorden van Mark Pütz. Jonge vrouwen en mannen, in de bloei van hun leven, gaven hun toekomst op voor de onze. In onbekend gebied vochten ze voor de vrijheid van mensen die ze niet kenden. Duizenden van hen zijn hier begraven. Of hun naam is vereeuwigd op de Walls of the Missing. Duizenden jonge vrouwen en mannen die de Limburgers voor altijd in hun hart hebben gesloten - door hun graf of naam te adopteren; door ze een gezicht te geven; door hun verhalen te blijven vertellen. Juist in onze tijd - waar oorlog niet ver weg is - zijn we dat aan hen en aan onszelf verplicht.

Geniet vandaag van de prachtige muziek van de Koninklijke Militaire Kapel ‘Johan Willem Friso’, gedirigeerd door Tijmen Botma en ondersteund door Nico Wouterse en door onze jonge Limburgse Ster, Emma Kok, die ook een van de vier lezers van persoonlijke verhalen is. De drie anderen zijn Chargé d’Affairs Aleisha Woodward, historicus Paul Bronzwaer en Lt. Kolonel Gijs Tuinman.

Unknown Territory

My first full year as Governor of our country’s most precious province took me to places I had never been or seen before. To ‘unknown territory’, one might say, that I had yet to discover. A territory full of surprises and exceptional insights into the rich culture and society of Limburg.

Almost eighty years ago, allied troops entered this ‘unknown territory’ in a very different way. They found themselves in a torn and shattered Europe that didn’t look anything like the old continent of grandeur and history that they knew from their schoolbooks.

‘Unknown Territory’ is also the title of a musical piece by the Limburg composer Mark Pütz. A piece that is featured at the 2023 Liberation Concert. Pütz, himself, explains it like this: “What is it like for an individual – away from family and friends – to arrive in a different continent, not knowing what awaits you there? To perhaps lay down your life, although you hope, of course, to survive the struggle. It was that feeling of landing in ‘unknown territory’ that I wanted to express with my music”

When thinking about this concert, the last couple of days, I found myself constantly contemplating Mark Pütz’s words. Young women and men, in the prime of life, gave up their future for ours. In unknown territory, they fought for the freedom of people they didn’t know. Thousands of them have remained with us here in Margraten; buried in a grave or as a name

on the Walls of the Missing. Thousands of young women and men that the people of Limburg have sealed into their hearts forever – by adopting their grave or name; by giving them a face; by continuing to tell their stories. Especially now – when war is not far away – we owe that to them and to ourselves.

Enjoy the beautiful music today by the Royal Military Band ‘Johan Willem Friso’, directed by Tijmen Botma and supported by Nico Wouterse and by our young Star from Limburg, Emma Kok, who will also be one of the four readers of personal stories. The three other being Chargé d’Affairs Aleisha Woodward, historian Paul Bronzwaer and Lt. Colonel Gijs Tuinman.

Verhalen Stories

nabij Selgersdorf. Tijdens zijn diensttijd schreef William meer dan 200 brieven aan zijn vrouw. Deze brieven zijn bewaard gebleven en hebben zijn kleinzoon geïnspireerd om er songteksten van te maken. De kleinzoon van sergeant Aubut is vandaag onze gast en zal uit handen van spreker Paul Bronzwaer een laatste brief over het leven van zijn grootvader in ontvangst nemen.

William G. Aubut

Sergeant William G. Aubut uit de staat Massachusetts werd geboren in 1917. Hij woonde in Tewskbury en was getrouwd met zijn geliefde Doris. Samen met haar had hij een dochter met de naam Donna. In maart 1944 werd William opgeroepen voor het leger. Na het doorlopen van de training werd William in september 1944 naar Europa gestuurd waar hij diende in de F-compagnie van het 119e infanterieregiment onderdeel van de Old Hickory divisie die Zuid-Limburg hebben bevrijd. Na het oversteken van de Ruhr sneuvelde William op 27 jarige leeftijd

Sergeant William G. Aubut of Massachusetts was born in 1917. He lived in Tewskbury and was married to his college sweetheart Doris. Together with her he had a daughter named Donna. In March 1944, William was drafted into the army. After completing the training, William was sent to Europe in September 1944 where he served in the F-company of the 119th infantry regiment, part of the Old Hickory division that liberated South Limburg. After crossing the Ruhr, William was killed at the age of 27 near Selgersdorf. During his service, William wrote more than 200 letters to his wife. These letters have survived and inspired his grandson to turn them into songs. Sergeant Aubut’s grandson is our guest today and will receive a last letter about his grandfather’s life from speaker Paul Bronzwaer.

Luitenant Kolonel Robert G. Cole

Luitenant Kolonel Robert G. Cole uit de staat Texas werd geboren in 1915 en was een militair in hart en nieren. Van 19351939 studeerde hij aan Westpoint. Kort na zijn afstuderen was hij getrouwd. In 1944 vocht Robert als parachutist in de 101ste Airborne divisie. Als commandant van het 3e bataljon 502e Parachute infanterieregiment vocht hij met zijn mannen op D-Day. Tijdens de zware gevechten in Normandië toonde Robert buitengewone moed door in een open veld met een pistool frontaal de aanval te kiezen. Hiermee wist hij vanuit een schier onmogelijke positie de Duitse verdedigers uit te schakelen en vitale bruggen in handen te krijgen. Met deze actie verdiende hij de Medal of Honor. Tijdens operatie Market Garden ging Robert weer voorop in de strijd zij aan zij met zijn mannen. Op de eerste dag van deze operatie zou een kogel van een Duitse sluipschutter een einde maken aan het leven van de 29-jarige Robert Cole.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert G. Cole

Lieutenant Colonel Robert G. Cole of Texas was born in 1915 and was a soldier at heart. From 1935 to 1939 he studied at Westpoint. Shortly after graduating, he was married. In 1944 Robert fought as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. As commander of the 3rd Battalion 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, he fought with his men on D-Day. During the heavy fighting in Normandy, Robert showed extraordinary courage during an assault in open field with only a pistol in his

hand against a strong German defensive position. With this charge, from an almost impossible position, he managed to eliminate the German defenders and to get hold of vital bridges. This action earned him the Medal of Honor. During Operation Market Garden, Robert again led the way side by side with his men. On the first day of this operation, a bullet from a German sniper would end the life of 29-year-old Robert Cole.

Wilma Vinsant

Wilma ‘Dolly’ Vinsant werd in 1917 in Texas. Haar vader was arts en haar moeder verpleegkundige. Voor de oorlog volgde ze zelf ook een opleiding voor verpleegkundige. Als bijbaantje was ze stewardess. Toen de oorlog uitbrak in 1941 meldde ze zich aan als vrijwilliger bij het United States Army Nurse Corps. Na een zware opleiding werd ze als flight nurse ingedeeld bij het 806e Medical Air Evacuation Squadron. Tussen juni 1944 en april 1945 vloog Wilma 30 missies in Dakota’s om gewonde soldaten van het front naar ziekenhuizen in Engeland te brengen. Met alle missies die zij en haar 499 collega flight nurses vlogen hebben ze duizenden gewonde GI’s tijdens de Tweede

Wereldoorlog het leven gered. Tijdens een laatste missie, waarin ze insprong voor een andere collega, sloeg het noodlot echter toe. Het vliegtuig crashte net voor de landing. Dolly en haar medepassagiers hadden geen schijn van kans. De moedige 28-jarige flight nurse ligt sindsdien begraven in Margraten.

First Lieutenant Wilma Vinsant Wilma “Dolly” Vinsant was born in Texas in 1917. Her father was a doctor and her mother was a nurse. Before the war she also trained as a nurse. As a side job she worked as a flight attendant. When war broke out in 1941, she volunteered for the United States Army Nurse Corps. After a tough training she was assigned to the 806th Medical Air Evacuation Squadron as a flight nurse. Between June 1944 and April 1945 Wilma flew 30 missions in Dakotas to take wounded soldiers from the frontline to hospitals in England. With all the missions she and her 499 fellow flight nurses flew, they saved the lives of thousands of wounded GI’s during World War II. However, during a last mission, in which she filled in for another colleague, disaster struck. The plane crashed just before landing. Dolly and her fellow passengers didn’t stand a chance. The courageous 28-year-old flight nurse has been buried in Margraten ever since.

Eerste Luitenant Shannon E. Estill uit Cedar Rapids, Iowa, werd geboren in 1922. Gedurende de laatste fase van de oorlog was hij de piloot van een P-38 Lightning van het 428e Fighter Squadron. Kort voor hij in oktober 1944 naar Europa vertrok, trouwde hij met zijn vriendin Mary. Op 7 april 1945 vernam Shannon op de basis waar hij gestationeerd wad dat Mary twee weken daarvoor bevallen was van een gezonde dochter met de naam Sharon. Shannon heeft echter nooit de kans gekregen om zijn dochter te zien. Zes dagen later werd hij op 13 april 1945 met zijn vliegtuig in Oost-Duitsland uit de lucht geschoten. Zijn stoffelijke overschot werd nooit gevonden waardoor zijn naam op de wall of the missing in Margraten staat. Door het intensieve speurwerk van zijn dochter Sharon werd het vliegtuigwrak van Shannon 60 jaar na dato gevonden. Voor de naam van Shannon prijkt sindsdien een rosette die aangeeft dat hij niet langer vermist is.

First Lieutenant Shannon E. Estil

First Lieutenant Shannon E. Estill of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was born in 1922. During the final stages of the war, he piloted a P-38 Lightning of the 428th Fighter Squadron. Shortly before he left for Europe in October 1944, he married his girlfriend, Mary. On April 7, 1945, Shannon learned at the base where he was stationed that Mary had given birth to a healthy daughter named Sharon two weeks earlier. However, Shannon never got a chance to see his daughter. Six days

later, on April 13, 1945, his plane was shot down in East Germany. His remains were never found, so his name is on the Wall of the missing in Margraten. Through the intensive research of his daughter Sharon, Shannon’s plane wreckage was found 60 years later. Shannon’s name has since been adorned with a rosette indicating that he is no longer missing in action.

Paul Bronzwaer

Dr. Paul Bronzwaer (* 1936) studied French language and literature at Utrecht University. From 1960 to 1997 he taught French and was assistant principal at Sint Maartens College in Maastricht. In 2009 he obtained his PhD at Leiden University with a thesis entitled Maastricht and. In addition, he has a dozen publications to his name, all related to the Second World War in South Limburg and Maastricht.

Lieutenant-Colonel Gijs Tuinman

Gijs Tuinman was born in Heerlen in 1979, where he attended the Bernardinus College from 1992 to 1998. In 1998 he attended the Royal Military Academy in Breda, before becoming a platoon commander with the Commando’s in 2001. Until 2009, he was sent on five missions to Afghanistan and several times to Africa. On October 7, 2009, he was awarded the Bronze Lion, the second highest military award, for a mission in 2006. From 2009 to 2012 he was policy advisor for special operations at the Ministry of Defense in The Hague. On December 4, 2014, Tuinman was knighted by King Willem-Alexander and awarded the Militaire Willemsorde, the highest Dutch award for bravery, for his missions in Afghanistan.

Aleisha Woodward

Aleisha Woodward, a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, began her assignment in the Netherlands as Deputy Chief of Mission in June 2022.

Since joining the Department of State in 1998, Aleisha has focused on engaging diverse audiences across Europe and Asia and empowering people-to-people connections to promote democratic values, economic development, and other national security priorities. Aleisha received undergraduate and graduate degrees in international relations from Brigham Young University with concentrations on European political systems and Northeast Asia, respectively. In 2010, she was awarded a graduate degree in national security strategy by the National War College. Aleisha has studied several languages, including Dutch, Japanese, and Russian.

Emma Kok

Emma, 15 years old, became famous in 2021 as a 13-year-old by winning The Voice Kids. In 2023 she won MiniStars with the song Voila by Barbara Pravi. Emma was diagnosed with gastroparesis (stomach paralysis) at a young age. As a result, she is completely dependent on tube feeding. After winning MiniStars, she founded the Gastrostars foundation. This is a patient organization for people with gastric paralysis and similar conditions. On July 6, 2023, Emma performed as a surprise act at André Rieu’s Vrijthof concerts in Maastricht. Rieu is so charmed by her that he asked her to go on tour with him.

Kapel ‘Johan Willem Friso’

De Koninklijke Landmachtkapel ‘Johan

Willem Friso’ zet de tradities van de voormalige Koninklijke Militaire Kapel (1829) en de Johan Willem Friso Kapel (1819) voort. Dit professionele harmonieorkest heeft als hoofdtaak het muzikaal begeleiden van militaire en staatsceremonies en officiële recepties gehouden door Zijne Majesteit Koning Willem Alexander, staatshoofden en ambassadeurs.

Daarnaast geeft de militaire kapel ook concerten om de goede relaties tussen de Koninklijke Landmacht en haar omgeving te bevorderen. Bij officiële plechtigheden dragen de leden van het orkest de ceremoniële kleding van de Grenadier Guards. De uniformen zijn vooral bekend om de berenvellen, maar omvatten ook de Turkse halve manen, uitgebreide percussie-instrumenten die traditioneel door militaire bands worden gebruikt en een geschenk dat koningin-moeder Emma in 1901 aan de voormalige Koninklijke Militaire Kapel schonk.

The Royal Netherlands Army Band

‘Johan Willem Friso’ (KMKJWF - 2005) is carrying on the traditions of the former Royal Military Band (1829) and the Johan Willem Friso Band (1819). This professional concert band has as its main task the musical accompaniment of military and state ceremonies and official receptions held by His Majesty King Willem Alexander, heads of state and ambassadors.

In addition, the KMKJWF also gives concerts to promote good relations between the Royal Netherlands Army and its environment. In the event of official ceremonies the members of the band display the ceremonial dress of the Grenadier Guards. The uniforms are best known for the bearskins, but also include the Turkish crescents, elaborate percussion instruments traditionally used by military bands and a gift given to the former Royal Military Band by Queen Mother Emma in 1901.

Een laatste rustplek

The Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten is de enige Amerikaanse militaire begraafplaats in Nederland. Deze eervolle plek wordt beheerd door de American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).

Op de ‘Walls of the Missing’, links en rechts bij aankomst, staan de namen van 1.722 vermiste soldaten. Voorbij de toren op de uitgestrekte weide liggen bijna 8.300 soldaten begraven. Uniek aan deze begraafplaats is het adoptieprogramma, begeleid door de Stichting Adoptiegraven Margraten. Sinds 1945 worden de graven geadopteerd en verzorgd door mensen in en om de gemeenschap van EijsdenMargraten. Met het project ‘De Gezichten van Margraten’ tracht de Stichting Verenigde Adoptanten Amerikaanse Oorlogsgraven zoveel mogelijk van deze soldaten een gezicht te geven door bij hun graven en hun namen een foto te plaatsen. Inmiddels zijn alle graven en de namen op de ‘Walls of the Missing’ geadopteerd. Een bijzonder eerbetoon aan onze bevrijders.

A final resting place

The Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten is the only American military cemetery in the Netherlands. This honorable site is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).

On the ‘Walls of the Missing’, left and right on arrival, are the names of 1,722 missing soldiers. Beyond the tower on the vast meadow, nearly 8,300 soldiers are buried. Unique to this cemetery is the adoption program, supervised by the Foundation for Adopting Graves American Cemetery Margraten. Since 1945 the graves have been adopted and cared for by people in and around the community of Eijsden-Margraten. With the ‘Faces of Margraten’ project, the Foundation United Adopters American War Graves tries, as much as possible, to give a face to these soldiers by placing a photo at their graves and names. Meanwhile, all graves and names on the ‘Walls of the Missing’ have been adopted in a special tribute to our liberators.

Het concert vindt plaats op de Amerikaanse Begraafplaats en hier gelden een aantal speciale regels:

• gedraag u op een rustige en respectvolle wijze;

• zet uw mobiele telefoon uit en spreek op gedempte toon;

• respecteer de graven, ga niet op het gras zitten, liggen of op het gras picknicken;

• Roken is verboden

• huisdieren worden niet toegelaten;

• grote tassen zijn niet toegestaan;

• volg de aanwijzingen van de beveiliging en/of organisatie op en ga niet in discussie.

House rules

The concert will be performed at the Netherlands American Cemetery, where some special rules apply:

• visitors should behave in a respectful and dignified fashion;

• turn off your cell phones and speak in a low voice;

• sitting or lying on the grass and picnicking on the grass is not permitted;

• Smoking is prohibited

• pets are prohibited

• big bags are prohibited

• follow all instructions given by the officials responsible for maintaining order promptly and without question.
