Bill Boddie, Jr. VP of Operations Services Boddie-Noell Enterprises
When Carleton Noell and Mayo and Nick Boddie started BNE in 1962, they had no idea the impact they would have 63 years later. Once just a single Hardee’s restaurant, they built the company from the ground up and slowly grew it into a flourishing business. After adding many members to their team, a new purpose came to mind: develop people and use the resources of the company to create opportunities that would positively impact lives. They certainly lived this purpose, and it continues to drive our company to this day.
Throughout our history, Boddie–Noell has faced both good and difficult times. Our strong culture is the center of our continued success. No matter the challenges that come our way, we hold true to the belief of “taking care of people on
“The key to success is the ability to get along with people—it will make your life worthwhile when you realize that.”

both sides of the counter,” a principle that both Nick and Mayo strongly believed. When we take care of our
employees, they will take care of our guests. Our core values – Respect, Excellence, Diversity, Honesty, Trust, and Teamwork – are the traits that make a solid leader who, in turn, will take care of our people.
Our success is credited to the people who work here. I am proud to work at a company that has so many loyal and long-tenured employees. This loyalty is a result of our leaders that embody our vision and values daily. This leadership builds trust, engagement, and high performance, remaining steadfast no matter the circumstances.
Looking ahead, a new group of leaders — both in the field and at the Home Office — is ready to continue the legacy. To help guide this effort, the BNE Vision and Values
Committee was created. This group of individuals was chosen based on their display of our vision and values within their respective leadership roles. The committee is working on new ideas to share and strengthen our culture within the company and our communities.
Since the beginning, we have been blessed with talented, dedicated people who represent our values. As Mayo once said, “The key to success is the ability to get along with people — it will make your life worthwhile when you realize that.” This simple truth continues to motivate us to do our best and serve our communities.
Thank you for everything you do to help carry on the legacy of Boddie–Noell Enterprises.
To use the resources of our company to provide opportunities for our people and to be a positive influence on people’s lives wherever and whenever we can.
We are a values-based family business established in 1962 that believes in people.
Focused on restaurants & real estate Operated by the best people in the industry
Meeting the ever-changing needs of our customers & communities
Enjoying every aspect of our success
RESPECT for individuals, communities, and our environment.
HONESTY at all times, regardless of circumstances and without fear of retribution.
TRUST in others and ourselves. We fulfill our commitments and treat mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
EXCELLENCE in all we do, exceeding the expected and continuing to improve.
TEAMWORK or enthusiastically working together to accomplish more.
DIVERSITY to value each person’s unique ability to contribute. The strongest team is the one that recognizes individual talents and strengths.
Throughout the night as winners accepted their awards and voiced words of appreciation, it was clear that though their individual stories and circumstances differed, BNE’s core values of respect, honesty, trust, excellence, teamwork, and diversity were a vital part of each person’s success.

Founders Award
“Every person here is a winner. You make Boddie-Noell what it is – truly a family. You’re the reason we’re successful.”
- BRENDA CHERRY Senior VP of Hardee’s Restaurant Operations
The best of the best from Boddie-Noell’s 325 Hardee’s restaurants gathered at Rose Hill for the annual awards banquet on Sunday, March 2. The four top regional biscuit makers in the company, 11 Founders Award winners, their guests, and members of the BoddieNoell leadership team were in attendance to honor the best in operational excellence across the company in 2024.
winners must meet and surpass an established set of criteria for operational excellence in addition to representing and impacting Boddie-Noell in an extremely positive way.
Winning the award is no easy feat. Restaurants are tracked throughout the year in the categories of sales, food costs, payroll, miscellaneous expenses, and overall restaurant operations. Winners must also exemplify the core values for which Boddie-Noell stands.
The Founders Award is given in honor of the company’s three founders, the late Mayo Boddie, Sr., the late Carleton Noell, and the late Nick Boddie, Jr., who together opened the company’s first Hardee’s in 1962. Each founder played an integral
role in setting the framework that would influence and shape the company for more than 50 years.
Bill Boddie, Jr., VP of Operations Services, hosted the evening and led the audience through the actionpacked awards ceremony. He expressed his gratitude to everyone in attendance, and their teams back home, for making 2024 an incredibly successful year for the company.
As the winners stepped up to the podium to accept their awards, they quickly diverted praise from themselves to their co-workers back at the restaurants, truly embodying Boddie-Noell’s core values.
Meet the 2024 Founders Award winners on the next page.

Hardee’s used:
For more than 40 years, Hardee’s customers have started their day with the Made From ScratchTM biscuit that BNE introduced to Hardee’s in 1977. Since then, our biscuit makers have been perfecting the craft of baking outstanding golden-brown biscuits.
attendance awaited the announcement of 2024’s Best Biscuit Maker winner.
As each regional winner was announced, Boddie-Noell’s core values were on display yet again. Each winner acknowledged that he or she couldn’t have done it without teamwork and that practicing and following the procedures led them to excellence.
> 6,300,000 pounds of biscuit and cinnamon raisin mix
> 448,000 pounds of flour
> 4,800,000 gallons of buttermilk
The Best Biscuit Maker challenge is a beloved company tradition that we started in 1983. More than 700 biscuit makers from more than 300 Hardee’s restaurants participated in the 2024 competition. Contestants represented restaurants across NC, VA, SC, and KY.
The competition started in October, and each biscuit maker was evaluated based on the quality of biscuits, knowledge of proper biscuit equipment, cleanliness and care of the biscuit equipment, knowledge and execution of company procedures, grooming and appearance. The judges included regional directors, vice presidents, and other executives in the restaurant division of BNE.
A winner from each of our four Hardee’s regions was selected as a regional winner. The four regional winners then competed for the title of Best Biscuit Maker and were honored at the company’s annual banquet at Rose Hill Conference Center on March 2. Rose Hill was filled with anticipation as all in
Tony Robinson from the Hardee’s at 701 Independence Blvd. in Virginia Beach, VA. was announced as BNE’s Best Biscuit Maker for 2024. No stranger to success in the biscuit making competition, this is Robinson’s fifth time being named overall Best Biscuit Maker in his 12 years of baking biscuits for Hardee’s. He was also named the top
Hardee’s biscuit maker nationwide in 2023, competing against biscuit makers from the brand’s more than 1,700 restaurant locations across the United States. Robinson will again compete in Hardee’s national competition, looking to reclaim his title.
In addition to Robinson, the three best biscuit maker regional winners were Geraldine McCaskell of Bamberg, SC, Kelina Souza of Disputanta, VA, and Argelia Soarez of Roanoke, VA.
“Our biscuit makers are truly special. Not many people could happily get up that early and put so much love into what they do.”

For two days in April, a group from the Home Office spent the morning volunteering at the Rocky Mount Special Olympics held at Rocky Mount High School. Volunteers were stationed at the Softball Throw to keep score, line up participants, and cheer for all athletes. Everyone agreed it was an incredibly rewarding experience to see the joy of each athlete as they competed, no matter the outcome.

“I had a medical situation and superlative actions were taken by staff. Order placed and drinks in hand, I headed out the door to my wife in the van at the curb when I became very dizzy! I started to fall but was saved from hitting the floor by the actions of Darleen, who grabbed me by the belt until other staff got a chair for me to sit. Actions were taken, and staff members got my wife from the van. After I regained control of my body, both Reggie and Darleen, continued to assist me back to health.”
From our Home Office in Rocky Mount to our Hardee’s locations across four states, family ties are everywhere you look. As a third-generation family business, BNE prides itself on the family-centered culture it was founded in when brothers Nick and Mayo Boddie, alongside their uncle Carleton Noell, opened one of the very first Hardee’s restaurants in Fayetteville, N.C.
This enduring spirit, rooted in mutual respect and a deep appreciation for every individual, is encapsulated in our motto: “We Believe in People.” This isn’t just a motto; it’s the foundation of how we operate daily, honoring the unique gifts and talents of each team member. Whether it’s team members who are actual family, or team members who feel like family, Boddie-Noell is fortunate to have both.
Our growth and over 60 years of success as the largest Hardee’s franchise operator in the United States are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees. These are just a handful of the many family members who work together, contributing to the vibrant, people-centered culture that defines Boddie-Noell Enterprises.

Our Savings and Employee Retirement Plan is a 401(k)plan designed to provide eligible employees a means to save for retirement on a tax-deferred basis. The plan allows employees with one year of service (consisting of at least 500 hours) the opportunity to contribute 1% to 15% of their eligible compensation on a pretax basis (subject to tax law limits). BNE currently matches $0.35 for every dollar an employee contributes, up to the first 6% of eligible compensation. The program is designed to provide financial assistance to BNE employees who may be experiencing an unforeseen personal crisis such as acute illness, natural disaster, fire, or flood. Through payroll deduction an employee can contribute as little as $1 per pay period to the fund. If an employee experiences a personal crisis, they can apply for assistance through E4ERelief, which administers the program for BNE. In Fall 2024, BNE hosted a fundraising event in Virginia Hardee’s restaurants from September 30 to November 8. Each of the 165 stores had a goal of raising $1,000. The employees at the top 10 earning stores would be eligible to win cash prizes.
VP of Ops Services Bill Boddie, Jr. led the initiative with an ambitious $100,000 goal and the promise of participating in the Polar Plunge at Virginia Beach in early February 2025 if the goal was met.
BNE exceeded the goal by raising a total of $116,980 — the highest amount the company has ever achieved!
“Each and every one of our Virginia Hardee’s restaurant team members played a crucial role in this success, contributing to an incredible cause that
From L: Jada Jones, Paul Ballard and Evan Euripides
supports athletes throughout the state of Virginia,” Boddie continued. “I’m very proud of all our Virginia Hardee’s team members and leadership’s dedication and hard work in reaching our goal.”
The amount raised sent over 450 athletes to the 2025 SOVA Summer Games.
“This exemplifies our motto, ‘We Believe in People,’” said Boddie. “It makes me so proud that we are fortunate and capable of using the resources of our company to help and serve those in our communities that we operate in.”
“In celebration of reaching our target, I took the Polar Plunge as the Hardee’s Star in the Atlantic Ocean. It was an exhilarating experience, undeniably cold, and I loved every minute of it!”

SOVA expressed gratitude for the Boddie-Noell partnership on their website. “We extend a heartfelt thank you to Boddie-Noell/Hardee’s and every supporter who contributed to this year’s record-breaking campaign,” the post read. “Your dedication to inclusivity is an inspiration, and together, we are making a lasting impact on the lives of Special Olympics athletes.”
The Region 4 Road Show was a memorable event, highlighted by the theme “nurturing our people on both sides of the counter.” This was carried throughout the presentation with specific examples of how nurturing crops can directly relate to nurturing people.
Region 4 Vice President, Chuck Burke, explained the theme in more detail, stating “We talked about the development of employees and management. Our plan involves nurturing our people – showing them care, compassion, and support as we plant the seed with our people and provide the right environment for them to grow and support in any way we can along their path.”
James H. Waters, the late Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer of BNE, realized the importance of education and its role in personal development. Today we continue to honor his beliefs by awarding scholarships and encourage families of our employees to take advantage of this important benefit.
The Betty Jean Oxendine Scholarship program was created in memory of Betty, an employee who lost her life at age of 18. Through this memorial, BNE hopes to help other young people with promising futures achieve their goals in healthcare.

Boddie-Noell received The Spirit of North Carolina award in a ceremony held at Smith’s Pavilion in Rocky Mount on March 25 of this year. This award gives statewide recognition to organizations that demonstrate their commitment to community impact by developing philanthropic culture and volunteerism; serve as an example of exceptional leadership and partnership with communities by creating long-term solutions for positive change; and increase opportunities for giving through workplace campaigns and special events.
The award presenter commented, “The leadership at Boddie-Noell Enterprises set the stage for a tremendous campaign. In addition, the Campaign Coordinator, Kim Zdebiak, has worked diligently for over 25 years to help the campaign soar. Their United Way team coordinated an inperson campaign that resulted in 100% employee giving. They have shown great enthusiasm and support for United
Way, including tremendous corporate support. The United Way Headquarters is a constant reminder of Boddie-Noell’s generosity as our building is their single largest donation in United Way history. They have consistently demonstrated their support of United Way’s ongoing commitment to the twin county region and the thousands we serve”.
Boddie-Noell is a proud supporter of the United Way and humbled to be recognized with this special award.

Corporate Chaplains of America
Corporate Chaplains of America is a benefit offered by BNE to assist with emotional, relational, and spiritual needs. Chaplains are a vital part of BNE’s desire to provide complete care to their employees.
Chaplains can assist in helping employees deal with the stress of everyday life. Those stresses can look different, but ultimately all stress impacts a person’s overall wellness. Assistance can look like any of the following:
Grief Care: Funeral guidance, grief counseling, anxiety
Health Support: Hospital visitation, emotional support, prayer, counseling
Relationship Mending: Marriages, parental, child, co-worker
Legal Assistance: Court appearances, law situations (guidance not professional), will creation guidance
Emergency Assistance: Local connections for emergency funds or professional services
For a full list of how a chaplain can assist you, check out the flyer in your restaurant that highlights chaplaincy. You have access to a local chaplain who visits your location, a call-out chaplain who you can call directly, or the TelaChap services allowing you to communicate immediately. Chaplains are available 24/7/365. The goal is to give you care in your time of need.
