2023 Founders Award Recipients

The Founders Award is the top operational award given annually by Boddie-Noell. The award is given to the company’s top 10 Hardee’s restaurants and their general managers. Founders Award winners must meet and surpass an established set of criteria for operational excellence in addition to representing and impacting Boddie-Noell in an extremely positive way.

Winning the award is no easy feat. Restaurants are tracked throughout the year in the categories of sales, food costs, payrolls, miscellaneous expenses and overall restaurant operations. Winners must also exemplify the core values for which Boddie-Noell stands.

“Every person here is a winner and you make BNE what it is. Thank you for all that you do.”
- BRENDA CHERRY Senior VP of Hardee’s Restaurant Operations

The Founders Award is given in honor of the company’s three founders, the late Carleton Noell, the late Nick Boddie, Jr. and the late Mayo Boddie, Sr., who together opened the company’s first Hardee’s in 1962. Each founder played an integral role in setting the framework that would influence and shape the company for more than 50 years. Bill Boddie, Jr., director of operations services for Boddie-Noell, played host for the evening and led the audience through the action-packed awards ceremony. “2023 was a great year for Boddie-Noell and that’s thanks to all of you here tonight,” said Bill Boddie, Jr.

As the winners stepped up to the podium to accept their awards, they quickly diverted praise from themselves to their co-workers back at the restaurants, truly embodying BoddieNoell’s core values.

Biscuit Maker Champions

For more than 40 years Hardee’s customers have started their day with the Made From ScratchTM biscuit that Boddie-Noell introduced to Hardee’s in 1977. Since then, Boddie-Noell biscuit makers have been perfecting the craft of baking outstanding golden-brown biscuits, which remain a customer favorite.

The Best Biscuit Maker challenge is a beloved company tradition that was started by BNE in 1983. More than 700 biscuit makers from more than 300 Hardee’s restaurants participated in the 2023 competition. Contestants represented restaurants across North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, and Kentucky.

Each biscuit maker was evaluated based on the quality of his or her biscuits, knowledge of proper biscuit equipment, cleanliness and care of the biscuit equipment, knowledge and execution of company procedures, grooming and appearance. Judges included trainers, general managers, district managers, regional directors, vice presidents

and other executives in the restaurant division of Boddie-Noell at the five levels of competition.

A winner from each of Boddie-Noell’s four Hardee’s regions was selected as a regional winner. The four regional winners then competed for the title of Best Biscuit Maker and were honored at the company’s annual banquet at Rose Hill Conference Center on March 3. Rose Hill was filled with anticipation as all in attendance awaited the announcement of 2023’s Best Biscuit Maker winner.

As each regional winner was announced, Boddie-Noell’s core values were on display yet again. Each winner acknowledged that he or she couldn’t have done it without teamwork and that practicing and following the procedures led them to excellence.

Meet the 2023 Biscuit Maker Winners:

BNE Biscuit Maker Champion 2023

Hardee’s of 52nd & Aberdeen

“Our biscuit makers are special,” said Brenda Cherry. “You get up early. You care. You are the reason our guests come back daily.”

Geraldine McCaskell from the Hardee’s at 2999 Main Highway in Bamberg, SC was announced as Boddie-Noell’s Biscuit Maker for 2023. She has been named a regional winner three times previously.

In fact, it was a remarkably familiar group being honored for their biscuit making skills, with all four regional winners from 2022 repeating in 2023.

In addition to McCaskell, the three best biscuit maker regional winners were Tony Robinson of Virginia Beach, VA, Shakiem Hermon of Hampton, VA and Argelia Soarez of Roanoke, VA

McCaskell competed on behalf of BNE in a biscuit-making competition hosted by Hardee’s parent company, CKE Restaurants, which pits against each other the top biscuit makers systemwide from across the United States.

Where It All Began

Below is an excerpt from a CKE published article on Tony Robinson, four-time biscuit challenge winner.

Take us back to the very beginning. Who is Tony Robinson?

I was born in Manhattan, NY, but we only lived there for a few short years, until we moved down to Enfield, NC. Motivated by my best friend, who I considered a brother, I enlisted in the U.S. Military right after high school. That began a 20-year

career in the Navy, where I served in the Civil Engineer Corps until I retired in 2006. The military reinforced what my mother always taught us growing up – be tidy and be on time – two great characteristics of a Biscuit Baker also.

So fast forward, how did you end up a Hardee’s Biscuit Baker?

One night, I was returning DVDs at the Blockbuster on Independence Blvd. when I saw on the big, bright Hardee’s marquee next door, “Biscuit Baker Wanted.” I was hired on the spot.

Did you grow up eating Hardee’s?

My family was mostly from way out in the country, and we didn’t have much money to eat out. Of course, I knew what Hardee’s was, and of course, I knew all about biscuits. To me, fresh-baked biscuits are more than just ingredients; they symbolize a legacy of love, tradition, and the joy of sharing a meal with those who matter most to me.

Besides history and heritage, what motivates you?

My wife Keisha and son Sydney are my source of inspiration. Their unwavering support motivates me to get up each morning and ensure every batch of biscuits not only reflects my talent and commitment to craft, but my commitment to the people around me –my family, team, and my community.

Congratulations to Geraldine and the amazing team at Hardee’s of Bamberg, SC.

Employee Hidden Talents

Boddie-Noell employees excel in many areas outside of their roles. Your co-workers share their impressive hobbies, small businesses, and interests where they invest time when out of office.

1. Serena Lynch: The Designer Role and No. of Years at BNE: Hardee’s Manager at Old Carriage Road; 37 years

Hidden Talent: Since March 2020, I’ve designed shirts, mugs, puzzles, blankets, etc. I love making blankets with photos.

How BNE Helps: I’ve made items for my co-workers, such as a Merry Christmas T-shirt and a badge swipe holder for management.

Pro Tip: There will be mistakes as you work on a project, but don’t give up.

Contact: Facebook (Serena Lynch)

2. Mary Jones: The Jeweler Role and No. of Years at BNE: Hardee’s General Manager of Crater Road in Petersburg; 40 years

Hidden Talent: Colorful Creations by MJ is handmade jewelry using beads and crystals. I’ve made jewelry for about six years.

Highlight: My favorite type of jewelry is the awareness jewelry, especially for cancer since my husband has stage 4 prostate cancer. I love showing support for our family and friends and everyone who’s going through what life brings them.

Pro Tip: One thing about making handmade jewelry is that you have to know how to coordinate your colors, and be patient and creative.

Contact: Facebook (Colorful Creations by MJ) or email maryjones059@gmail. com

3. Matthew Horne: The Pianist Role and No. of Years at BNE: Restaurant Technical Services Field Engineer with BNE; 12 years

Hidden Talent: I’ve played the piano since I was 13 years old. I’ve been a church pianist for the past 18 years and the last 10 years at East Lumberton Baptist Church, where I am currently serving. I play for all the regular worship services and am often asked to play at funerals and weddings for friends and church members. I mostly play gospel church music.

Highlight: Even though I can’t sing, I enjoy music. Playing the piano is my way of worship at church and my way of relaxation at home. I enjoy playing the piano for myself as much as others.

4. Jessica Phillips: The Baker Role and No. of Years at BNE: Asset Protection Coordinator for BNE; 1 year

Hidden Talent: After I mastered making sourdough bread, I got into making cakes and other goodies. I found out I was actually pretty decent at it. My coworkers told me I needed to keep going!

Pro Tip: Don’t give up! Baking is very intricate and takes a lot of trial and error. Weighing is better than measuring cups when it comes to baking.

How BNE Helps: My co-workers are so supportive and give me feedback on what is good or what could be better.

Contact: Facebook (Jessica Phillips) or email jphi01061999@gmail.com

5. David Gardner: The Bedmaker Role and No. of Years at BNE: Director of Analytics at BNE; 8 years

Hidden Talent: I watched a “Returning the Favor” episode about a guy who started Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) by wanting to teach his kids that Christmas is not just about getting gifts. He built two twin beds and reached out to his church family for bedding, and for anyone who knew of a family in need of beds. These two beds helped kick off what is now a worldwide non-profit organization. My buddy Frank and I started the Rocky Mount chapter of SHP.

Highlight: This organization has been eye opening for us to see how big the need for kids’ beds is in our area. Since 2018, we have delivered over 1,000 beds locally.

How BNE Helps: The people make the most difference. The annual support we get from Mike Boddie and Bill Boddie, Sr. has allowed us to make a huge impact within our community.

Volunteer: Visit shpbeds.org/volunteer or facebook.com/SHPRockyMount

6. Michaela Stallings:

The Flower Farmer

Role and No. of Years at BNE: Help Desk

Dispatcher for Facilities Management; 14 years

Hidden Talent: Behind the Pines started as a hobby when I overplanted a few varieties of cut flowers. The blooms were so prolific that my sister and I thought it would be fun to sell the extra flowers on the weekends to friends and family. The word spread, and we saw the need for a local flower farmer in our area. We sell arrangements at the local Farmers Market in Nashville, NC, as well as at community vendor events, weekday

sales/delivery, small scale weddings, and flower bars for events.

Pro Tip: Only fill the vase with enough water to cover the end of flower stems. Every other day, cut stems at an angle and change the water. This extends the vase life of that bouquet.

How BNE Helps: Working at BNE has shown me the importance of having a purpose, vision, and values if you want to succeed within your business.

AROUND THE COMPANY

Arlington Place Recognized as an Exceptional Community Association

Arlington Place, a waterfront neighborhood between the coastal towns of New Bern and Oriental, was awarded the 2024 Community Association of Excellence Seal of Distinction by the Community Association Institute of NC. This award honors associations and their boards and managers who create and lead exceptional communities to own homes and live.

Resident Becca Lang, Arlington Place Sales Manager of 18 years, said the neighborhood and POA is thriving. “We have a great behind-the-scenes team who works hard to make sure that our neighborhood is, and always will be, on the right path. This award confirms that we have a productive, effective structure and is a testament to the incredible amount of planning that makes Arlington Place a great place to live.”

The community sits on the highest ground in the area with elevations at 20 feet above sea level. This easy, coastal living without the fear of flooding sets Arlington Place apart, along with the numerous amenities that invite residents to appreciate the surrounding nature. In 2023, almost 40% of residential land sold in Pamlico County was in Arlington Place, and the neighborhood is already up to 36 lots sold or under contract in 2024.

This Home Office Committee works to provide fundraisers to give back in the community and recently hosted a summer cookout.

Recognizing Success in the 2024 Road Shows

This spring, each of the four BNE regions gathered for the 2024 Road Shows. These annual events are held to celebrate the previous year’s accomplishments, recognize and reward achievers, and discuss goals.

Various awards and monetary gifts are given out for categories like highest sales, highest sales increase from previous year, and 7/7 on performance standards. Home Office employees present on topics pertaining to General Managers, such as updates, upcoming changes, and tools the GMs can use.

All General Managers and District Managers attend, as well as the

Regional VP, Regional Director, Field Engineers, Facility Maintenance Techs, and several Home Office employees. Road Shows are a rare opportunity for these professionals to come together in person, speak and present to each other, and celebrate their accomplishments.

Each region has a unique event theme, but BNE’s vision and values are consistently communicated across the board.

Region 1 held their event on April 7 at Southeastern Agricultural Center in Lumberton, NC. Their Road Show agenda featured a fashion show to showcase new uniforms, with several General Managers modeling the clothes.

“The Road Shows are always a very special time for Region 1,” said Andre Jumpp, Region 1 Vice President. “We look back at the past and celebrate, but we also look at the future. That is why the theme of the road show was ‘More in 24,’ which got everyone excited about people development, sales, profits, future remodels, and new uniforms displayed in the fashion show. I am very proud of the team that works in this region, because they are always there for one another. One Team, One Goal!”

Mayo Sr. Hall of Fame

Ben Mayo Boddie, Sr. was inducted posthumously into the Charles A. Cannon Free Enterprise Hall of Fame in a ceremony at historic Rose Hill Estate in Nashville, NC on May 16, 2024. It was a wonderful celebration for our Operations and Corporate Leadership Teams to join the Boddie family and honor Mayo.

The Free Enterprise Hall of Fame was established in 2001 to recognize the accomplishments of a select group of American leaders who directly impacted our country through their free enterprise efforts. Other inductees include textile magnate Charles A. Cannon, department store founder William Henry Belk, retailer John William Pope, clothing

manufacturer E.A. Morris, Ruddick Corp. co-founder Alan Dickson, and co-founder of Affordable Dentures Don Henson.

“I can’t think of a more accomplished entrepreneur than Mayo Boddie” said Brian Rogers, president of the Jesse Helms Center, which houses and maintains the Cannon Free Enterprise Hall of Fame in Wingate,

“If he were still with us, he would give all the credit to God, our mother, Jean Boddie, and the thousands of employees who have made Boddie-Noell the success it is today.”
- BILL BODDIE CEO and Chairman

NC. “Mayo truly exemplified the spirit of entrepreneurship, along with hard work, good character, and philanthropy that has made America great.”

Mayo’s many generous contributions in building people and helping and serving others created a legacy that the family continues to carry on.

Corporate Chaplains of America

A Most Valuable Treasure?

One of my favorite movies is “National Treasure,” a movie about a treasure hunter who seeks and finds ancient treasure valued at 10 billion dollars. Talk about valuable! We all have things or people considered to be valuable. What or who would be at the top of your list?

There is one valuable thing that helps us live fulfilled lives and that we all need. The good news is you don’t have to travel to find it. It’s not hidden, and it doesn’t cost a cent. One thing that is perhaps most valuable to every person is peace.

Having peace of mind and heart allows one to live life to the fullest. It can be difficult to achieve because it requires giving up feelings, rights, and obstacles that stand in our way. When someone wrongs us, the best way to overcome that wrong is to forgive. Forgiveness isn’t easy, but if we can achieve it, then we have peace. Peace allows us to move forward instead of being held captive of our past. When we have peace, no one has power over us. Instead, we have control. Peace allows us to experience joy and renewed vigor for life.

Chaplains can help you work through the things and people that want to keep you from this most valuable treasure. Chaplains are available to you 24/7. The goal is for us to help you find that most valuable treasure of peace and come alongside you to help you to never lose it again. Reach out to your chaplain by phone, text, or email.
