One Team, One Goal

Mike Boddie President Boddie-Noell Enterprises

Sixty years! Where does the time go? When our father, Uncle Nick and Great Uncle Carleton Noell founded Boddie-Noell Enterprises, Inc. in 1962, they had no idea it would become the company it is today. Their belief was to start a company that would focus on people: helping develop them and giving them the opportunity to grow if they had the desire to do so. These three men set the standard by which Boddie-Noell has operated for the past 60 years.

E

ven though the years have flown by, and we have experienced many changes from new menus to uniforms, hairstyles and building

and the labor shortage throughout our country; during this time BoddieNoell kept our restaurants and home office open. It was

Boddie-Noell’s growth plan is well designed, but it cannot succeed without people to grow with it. designs, the one thing that we have strived to remain constant is our focus on our people and our communities. Back in the 1970’s, Dad came up with our slogan, “We Believe in People,” and it is the belief still today that our values are based upon. Respect • Honesty • Trust Excellence • Teamwork Diversity We have always faced challenges and overcome them through working together. The past couple of years have brought extraordinary challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic

certainly a difficult time, but we were going to take care of and support our people so they could take care of our customers. As we look to the future, we are excited to see the next generation of leaders both in the field and home office ready to continue our legacy. What will the company look like and what will we be doing in the future? We will always be open to opportunities to grow Boddie-Noell and offer opportunities to our people, but one thing is for sure: we can only grow and be successful in whatever we do through our great people

working together as one team with one goal of great service to our customers. We would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of our people for the part they have played in making Boddie-Noell a success for the past 60 years. We have been truly blessed with talented, dedicated, good people in our Boddie-Noell family. When you look back, you see how quickly life goes by and realize you spend a large part of your life working. The relationships you make while at work become a big part of your life. In many instances, it becomes your family, and family is so important. We thank you for choosing to be part of the Boddie-Noell family and we look forward to what the future holds for all of us. Thank you for all you do! Mike Boddie

A Trip Down BNE Lane

It was early 1960 when Mayo and Nick’s aunt, Annie Lou, encouraged them to go into business with her husband, Carleton Noell. The 60s were a great beginning, but just the beginning! By the early 70s, the number of Hardee’s restaurants had grown significantly. The 1980s gave way to explosive growth and expansion for the company. BNE restructured in the 90s after many diverse business interests, which made way for even more growth in the 2000s.

Growing up with BNE In 1962 Boddie-Noell began with 60 employees for its four restaurants. Sixty-two years later we have 333 restaurants in four states, four Vice Presidents of Operations, five Directors of Operations, and 49 District Managers. We also have the following home office support teams: Restaurant Development and Facility Management, Human Resources and Training, Payroll, Finance, Information Services, Purchasing, Marketing, and Product and Development. The Rose Hill Conference Center and BNE Land and Development are also very important parts of our company.

B

oddie-Noell has been blessed with many long-term, dedicated employees in the home office and field for the last 62 years. Our people are our greatest asset, and they will continue to be the success of our company as we plan for the future. Hardee’s is and will continue to be our flagship. As many individuals are retiring, great opportunities are created to grow within the company and build the career of a lifetime. Over the years, we have promoted many dedicated employees with great leadership skills who live our vision and values.

The majority of our corporate field support teams began their careers in restaurants as hourly employees and management in our restaurants. It is their ability to know and understand operations, and to train and develop great leaders in the restaurants to replace them, that created opportunities for their career paths. Most importantly, our leadership must lead with our vision and values. Your future career path is just beginning, and we are excited about the career opportunities available for future leaders in both operations and corporate positions.

THE HISTORY OF

Founders Award

I

n 1979 Boddie-Noell introduced a management awards program. Named in honor of the company’s founders and chairman of the board at the time, the late W. Carleton Noell, the program was designed to replace the “Manager of the Year” programs conducted by each district. The program involved competition by all managers company wide, and selection of the five best based on a variety of standards, inspection, interviews, and testing. There was just one winner until the year 2000, when 23 General Managers and District Managers were recognized for the award. In 2012, the award was changed to what it is known as today, the Founders Award. This prestigious recognition highlights the top performing restaurants and General Managers based on a set of criteria for operational excellence including sales, food costs, and payroll. Today the award focuses on the top 10 restaurants companywide. The annual celebration is held at Rose Hill Conference Center in Nashville, NC where winners and their guests enjoy a dinner and awards ceremony recognizing their achievements.

Rose Hill’s first employee was Farm Manager Larry Corbett who started in September 1979 and was a vital part of the property’s restoration, finding the best use for every acre of land and developing a plan for future agriculture use. Cops on the Roof Miracle at Dinwiddie

M

ay 27th, 2022 started out as a normal morning at the Hardee’s of Dinwiddie. One of the restaurant’s regular drive thru guests, Cheri, decided to order her breakfast inside because the drive thru line was so long. As she was waiting in line she realized there was a medical emergency happening with one of the employees. What happened next can only be described as divine intervention. Cheri heard the Shift Leader, Eric, yell for someone to call 911; the General Manger, Hugo, had collapsed on the back line of the restaurant. Cheri, who happens to be a nurse, did not hesitate to start CPR on Hugo when she realized he did not have a pulse. Ultimately, Cheri saved Hugo’s life by administering CPR until the ambulance could arrive and later airlift him to the nearest hospital. A few weeks later, Hugo and Cheri were able to reunite and they, along with all of the employees at Dinwiddie, were able to celebrate Hugo’s return.

As we see challenges arising in today’s workforce, it is more important than ever that employees recognize their value and contribution to the team. Employees who struggle personally in areas of happiness and personal fulfillment take on average 15 more sick days each year, and 51% of unscheduled work absences are caused by employees’ family issues, personal needs, or stress. Our mental health and well-being can struggle under the weight of grief, anxiety, stress, our health, relationships, or several other private concerns.

“We know everyone is faced with challenges from time to time, and while we might not be equipped to give proper direction, Corporate Chaplains is.”

- BILL BODDIE SR. At Corporate Chaplains of America, we often Chairman and CEO say, “If it is important to you, it is important to us.” Chaplains not only contact employees for a moment of encouragement regularly, but also provide practical support at key moments. Chaplains are available 24 hours a day and feel a personal sense of calling to help support you as you navigate the weight of life. Whether it is marriage issues, relationship problems, spiritual needs, suicide, budgeting assistance, funerals, conflict resolution, or abuse, your chaplain is waiting to help. From the time that BNE brought on Corporate Chaplains of America, we have had more than 45,000 significant conversations about the important topics listed above. We will also soon be introducing BNE to TelaChap, an online service that will make it even easier to get immediate assistance. I have been serving BNE locations since 2016, and I still recall conversations with individuals six years later. I have been able to celebrate exciting moments with employees, as well as share with them in some of their most devastating moments of grief and trauma. I do not only promote chaplaincy because I am a chaplain. I urge you to connect with your chaplain because I have personally seen the difference it makes to have a chaplain walk with you in the challenging moments of life. I have heard many times at BNE, “We Believe in People,” and as chaplains, we are here for you! Derek Arnold

Wow … what a wonderful 60 years this has been! While we have weathered some tough years, the many great years we have shared far outweigh the hard ones. With our proven track record of successful accomplishments, many wonder what’s in store for our future? No one knows for certain, but I do know the future of BNE lies in the hands of its people just as it has for the past 60 years.

M

y late father, Mayo, chose the perfect motto, “We Believe in People,” for our company. It is one we continue to stand by regardless of whatever opportunity we encounter. With your help, we plan to remain in the restaurant business with Hardee’s as our flagship, but may venture into other brands and investments. Whatever the future holds, we will also continue to live by our purpose, “To use the resources of our company to provide opportunities for our

people and to be a positive influence on people’s lives wherever and whenever we can.” BNE is more than just a workplace … we are a true “family” who work together and support each other during both good and challenging times. That’s what we will continue to do for the next 60 years and beyond.

Thank you for being part of our past, present, and future. May God bless each of you. Bill Boddie

I look forward to a bright, shining future with endless opportunities for all of us.
