The Season of Giving — and the Finest Among Us

Winter has a way of slowing us down. The noise fades, the air sharpens, and we start to notice the things that matter most: faith, family, and the people who make this community feel like home. It’s a season that reminds us to look up, to look around, and to give thanks for the light that still shines in the world.

For over a decade, our mission has been to make a positive impact in the places where we live and work. We’ve achieved this by sharing the stories of local nonprofits and the individuals and organizations quietly doing the hard work of helping others. Those stories have reminded us just how generous this region really is. And that same generosity was evident again through The Finest, where your votes did more than just choose winners; they celebrated the people and businesses that make this community shine.

This winter, we’re building on that momentum with a new initiative to recognize local businesses that give back—owners and teams who pour their time, talent, and heart into helping others. Too often their generosity goes unseen. We want to change that.

If you know of a company making a real difference through donations, volunteerism, community events, or everyday acts of kindness, we’d love to hear from you. Nominate them by emailing editorial@likemedia.com and help us shine a light on the finest kind of leadership, the kind that serves.

And while this season is known for giving, it also reminds us of the greatest gift ever given: the gift of hope, born in a manger over two thousand years ago. That truth still speaks quietly through every act of kindness, every open door, and every effort to serve.

From all of us here, thank you for being part of our community, for believing in the good, and for helping us keep it shining.

Have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

WINNERS

The Power of Local Still Shines Bright

Thank you Sandpoint, for showing up once again to celebrate what makes this place more than just a zip code, more than just a region. The 2025 Finest Awards aren’t just about who’s “best.” They’re about belonging, about the local dreamers, doers, and difference-makers who remind us that community is built, not bought.

Each vote cast this year was more than recognition; it was a rally cry for locals. It said we believe in small business, we believe in connection, and we believe that when we invest in each other, everyone wins. The community members and businesses you recognized help shape the pulse of Sandpoint, creating jobs, giving back, and adding color and character to every corner of our community.

This is what local excellence looks like in 2025, not perfection, but passion. Not noise, but authenticity. The Sandpoint Living Local’s Finest isn’t about chasing trends; it’s about standing together in what lasts: trust, craftsmanship, and care for the people right next door.

Thank you for being part of something real. For showing that even in a fast-moving world, the heart of Sandpoint still beats strongest close to home. Here’s to another year of celebrating our people, our places, and the stories that make our community shine.

ORGANIZATION WITH A CAUSE

Better Together Animal Alliance

Since 1988, Better Together Animal Alliance (BTAA) has been a cornerstone of compassion in North Idaho. Founded by a small group of animal lovers in Sandpoint, what began as a modest shelter has grown into a regional leader in humane, communitybased animal care. Serving Bonner, Boundary, and Kootenai counties, BTAA focuses on keeping pets and people together through rehoming support, affordable spay and neuter services, pet food assistance, and temporary boarding during times of crisis.

Being named Sandpoint Living Local’s 2025 Finest Organization/ Nonprofit of the Year is a meaningful affirmation of the team’s tireless work. “It’s humbling and heartwarming to be recognized for the work that happens daily at our animal care center,” shares the team.

This past year brought remarkable milestones, including receiving the Community Cup from Humane World for Animals at the Animal Care Expo in Las Vegas and presenting at the ASPCA Cornell Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Conference. As founders of Home To Home, BTAA continues to lead a national program that has helped more than 95,000 pets find new families safely.

“At BTAA, we believe that animal welfare is people’s welfare. When we help pets, we help families, and when we help families, we strengthen our entire community,” adds Mandy Evans, Executive Director.

FINEST PERSON OF THE YEAR

Debbie Love

Debbie Love grew up in Boise in a hardworking, entrepreneurial family where, even in lean times, giving back was simply part of life. “My grandparents and my mom, who raised me on her own, showed me what it means to care for others, share what you have, and always lend a hand when someone needs it,” she says. Those early lessons shaped her outlook on service and continue to guide her today.

Since moving to Sandpoint in 2009, Debbie has carried those values into her work at the Bonner Community Food Bank. She recalls an elderly man who called after losing his wife and finding himself alone. “He wasn’t just looking for food; he was looking for connection,” she shares. “Our work is about more than food. It’s about building relationships, creating dignity, and making sure everyone in our community feels cared for.”

When Debbie learned she had been named Sandpoint Living Local’s 2025 Finest Person of the Year, she was both shocked and grateful. “To me, this recognition isn’t about one person; it’s about all of us. The work we do at the food bank reflects the community’s compassion and willingness to care for one another.”

“When we lift others up, we all move forward together.” A reflection of the purpose that guides everything she does.

FINEST TEACHER/YOUTH LEADER

For more than 30 years, Wendy Auld has poured her heart into teaching at Sandpoint High School. Honored as the 2025 Sandpoint Living Local’s Finest Teacher of the Year, she believes education is about much more than academics—it’s about building connections that help young people grow into confident, capable adults.

Wendy’s passion for teaching began early, shaped by her own experiences moving between mill towns across the Northwest. “With a supportive family, students can overcome nearly any obstacle,” she says. “When that falls through, teachers fill the place and can truly make a difference in someone’s life.” That understanding drives her to create a classroom where students feel supported to dig into hard problems, think critically, and communicate clearly. She encourages her students to work hard and be kind, two habits that shape both character and success.

Outside the classroom, Wendy finds joy in the everyday moments—Saturday review sessions at Evans Brothers, Friday night football games, school plays, and even coaching softball in a hailstorm. “I often hear people say, ‘I don’t know how you do it,’ and I’m literally thinking, I have the best job ever.”

Wendy’s impact reaches far beyond test scores. Her laughter, energy, and commitment to her students continue to inspire the Sandpoint community.

FINEST COMMUNITY EVENT

Farmers’ Market at Sandpoint

The Farmers’ Market at Sandpoint, celebrated as Sandpoint Living Local’s 2025 Finest Community Event, began in 1988 when local farmer Lois Wythe gathered interest for a market at Farmin Park. Ten vendors opened that first spring with produce, plants, and flowers from their gardens. Thirty-seven years later, the market continues every Saturday and Wednesday, connecting neighbors through fresh food, local art, and live music. “It’s really great to see how much our community appreciates and supports the market,” shares Market Manager Olivia Gonzales. “There’s an unbelievable amount of work that goes on behind the scenes, and this recognition means the world to all of us.”

Guided by a volunteer board and supported by sponsors, musicians, and vendors, the market strengthens small businesses and keeps money circulating locally. This year, it hosted more than 30 youth vendors during Kids’ Day and launched a monthly indoor market at the Library, a pilot program building toward a year-round experience. Partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and community organizations help keep the market dynamic and welcoming.

LIFE CHOICES PREGNANCY CENTER AND 7B CARE CLINIC Stand for Life

Faith-fueled support for women, men, and families

When facing an unplanned pregnancy, having access to compassionate, judgment-free support can make all the difference. That’s exactly what Life Choices Pregnancy Center (LCPC) and 7B Care Clinic aim to provide for the Sandpoint community.

At the heart of this organization is a clear and unwavering mission: “Life Choices Pregnancy Center is a Christ-centered non-profit organization dedicated to the sanctity of human life, recognizing that life begins at conception. We provide support and education to all those facing situations related to pregnancy, abortion, and sexual health. LCPC strives to empower healthy, vibrant families in the context of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.”

LCPC and 7B Care Clinic operate as one unified ministry, serving two distinct roles. LCPC is the donor-facing arm, focusing on raising funds and building awareness. 7B Care Clinic is the client-facing branch, providing direct services to women, men, and families in need.

“We rebranded our clinic as 7B Care Clinic to create a welcoming space for all women, including those who may be considering abortion,” explains Executive Director Janine Shepard. “Our goal is not to make decisions for women, but to provide a safe place where they can explore all their options— parenting, adoption, and abortion.” While the clinic does not perform or refer for abortions, they are committed to providing accurate information and a compassionate environment where women can make informed decisions.

They are committed to providing accurate information and a compassionate environment where women can make informed decisions.

Clients at 7B Care Clinic have access to a wide array of no-cost services, including medical-grade pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds to confirm pregnancy and estimate gestational age, medical-grade STD testing, individualized coaching, parenting and life skills classes, and material support. Although ongoing prenatal care is not currently part of the clinic’s scope, it provides early pregnancy support and connects clients with trusted local providers for continued care. The organization also serves male clients, offering one-on-one coaching to encourage active and confident fatherhood.

Through the BrightCourse program, clients can choose from over 250 online classes that cover topics such as pregnancy, parenting, and life skills. As they complete classes, they can earn gas or grocery gift cards. Monthly playgroups also help moms find connection and build a sense of community. For those in need of additional help, the clinic offers referrals to trusted local partners.

Beyond pregnancy-related services, the clinic also offers essential emotional support. “We offer abortion recovery support for women and men who have experienced the emotional and spiritual impact of abortion,” Shepard says. “We also provide miscarriage support for individuals and couples grieving the loss of a pregnancy… reminding them they are not alone and that healing is possible.”

Looking to the future, 7B Care Clinic has plans to expand. “We’re working toward offering OB care for low-risk clients

H EAVEN P OINTED TO EARTH WHEN

THE STAR AND THE STORY OF IMMANUEL

It’s one of the most recognized images in human history: a star shining above a manger in Bethlehem. It’s been painted, sung about, and printed on countless Christmas cards. But behind the nativity scenes and pageants lies one of the most remarkable truths in all of Scripture: the Creator of the heavens used His own creation to announce His arrival.

Matthew tells us about a group of wise men from the east, learned men who studied both the stars and the sacred writings of old. They likely came from the region once ruled by Babylon, where generations earlier the prophet Daniel had served as chief among the Magi. Through him, echoes of Israel’s hope had been preserved, whispers of a coming King, a promised Messiah, and even the prophecy that “a star shall come out of Jacob.”

So when a light appeared that was unlike any they had ever seen, they recognized its meaning. This wasn’t a coincidence

A Star SHALL COME OUT OF Jacob.

or a cosmic curiosity; it was fulfillment. What Daniel had foretold, the heavens were now declaring. And they followed.

That journey would take them hundreds of miles, across deserts and danger, into the heart of Judea. They had no map, only a star that moved, stopped, and stood over the very place where the Christ child lay. The detail is easy to miss but profound in meaning: the same God who spoke light into existence in Genesis was now using that light to declare His own birth. The heavens were literally pointing to earth.

John begins his gospel not with shepherds or angels but with eternity:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

IMMANUEL, MEANING “GOD WITH US.”

That’s the heart of Christmas, the Incarnation. God didn’t send an idea, a philosophy, or a symbolic hope. He came Himself. The infinite became an infant. The Maker of the stars entered the world beneath them.

Think about that. The hands that flung galaxies into orbit were now small enough to fit inside Mary’s palm. The same voice that thundered, “Let there be light,” was now the soft cry of a newborn. The very Author of life was breathing our air.

This is the mystery of Christmas—not sentimental nostalgia, but the unthinkable humility of God. The Word became flesh, and the heavens couldn’t stay silent about it.

And tucked into Matthew’s account is another name: Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” It’s not just poetic. It’s personal. The child in the manger wasn’t a symbol of hope; He was hope. He was God, here, among His people.

The star was more than a miracle of astronomy; it was a declaration. Psalm 19 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” That night in Bethlehem, they did precisely that, not abstractly, but personally. Some scholars believe the Star of Bethlehem may have been a rare planetary alignment, a supernova, or something beyond the realm of science altogether. But the point isn’t how it happened – it’s why.

The Magi saw that light and came to worship. They brought gold for a King, frankincense for a God, and myrrh for the One who would one day die. Every gift spoke of His purpose. They arrived as seekers of truth and left as worshipers of the Truth Himself. And in that humble house, these men who had searched the skies finally saw Immanuel—God with us!

It’s easy to read the Christmas story and view it as ancient history, but the pattern remains unchanged. God still reveals Himself to those who seek Him. He still draws outsiders in. Those Magi represent every one of us who has ever looked for meaning, who

“THE TRUE LIGHT THAT GIVES LIGHT TO EVERYONE WAS COMING INTO THE World.”

has ever followed a faint light through the dark, hoping it leads to something real. They remind us that God’s invitation extends beyond borders, beyond religion, beyond what we think we know.

And when we finally come face to face with Jesus, like those travelers, we realize the light we were following wasn’t far away after all. It was leading us home to Immanuel.

John wrote, “The true Light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” That’s the miracle of the Incarnation, not that a star appeared in the sky, but that the Light of the world stepped into human form.

The same Jesus who spoke galaxies into existence entered human time and space to rescue it. He didn’t just come to be admired. He came to redeem. He didn’t just shine from afar. He stepped into the darkness so He could bring us out of it. That’s why the Christmas story still matters, because every generation needs that light again. Every heart needs to know Immanuel, the God who is not far away but always near.

Two thousand years later, we still hang stars on trees and rooftops. Maybe we don’t think much about what they mean. But the truth remains: that star was never about astronomy. It was about an invitation.

The Magi saw it and came. The shepherds heard it and ran. Mary held it in her arms. And today, that same light still calls to hearts that are searching. Christmas isn’t just about looking back to a manger. It’s about realizing that the same God who once used a star to guide strangers still uses light to guide us – sometimes in ways we don’t expect, sometimes right where we are. Because the God who once pointed heaven to earth still points hearts to Himself.

And His name is still Immanuel. God with us!

The Art of the Build

Where craftsmanship, collaboration, and creativity meet from dirt to décor

Walk through the doors of LOFT THIRTY ONE, and inspiration greets you at every turn. Founded by husband-and-wife team Jodie and Wes Chapman, this North Idaho design studio has become a trusted name for builders, contractors, and homeowners who value creativity backed by craftsmanship.

From their home base in Sandpoint, LOFT THIRTY ONE has redefined what it means to be a full-service design firm. Their team blends innovative design, hands-on collaboration, and material sourcing all under one roof, guiding clients and builders through every phase of a project. The result? Seamless coordination and spaces that truly reflect the people who live in them.

“We make it a point to stay current with the latest trends while allowing our inspiration and style to evolve with each client,” Jodie shares. That mindset has made LOFT THIRTY ONE a soughtafter partner for custom home builds across Idaho, Montana, Arizona, Texas, Tennessee, and Florida. Their reach is national, but

their focus remains on creating meaningful, personalized spaces wherever they go.

What sets the firm apart is its “dirt to décor” approach, a creative philosophy that spans from construction selections to final styling. LOFT THIRTY ONE isn’t just about what looks good on paper; it’s about managing every detail along the way. Their sourcing division provides builders and clients access to everything from flooring, cabinets, and tile to lighting, hardware, and plumbing fixtures, making it easy to keep design and construction aligned.

This comprehensive approach has built strong relationships with contractors who appreciate the team’s efficiency and eye for cohesion. With years of experience navigating the intricacies of high-end builds, Jodie and Wes know how to balance big ideas with practical execution. The result is a process that’s as collaborative as it is creative.

Their portfolio includes everything from cozy mountain retreats

to sprawling estates, each infused with character, craftsmanship, and a touch of surprise. Among their most talked-about projects is The Big House, a 27,000-square-foot Arizona estate featuring an underground shooting range, a hidden speakeasy, and layers of luxury and artistry throughout. “That project was wild,” Jodie recalls. “But it’s always about the relationships.”

Projects like that remind the team why they do what they do— merging creativity with connection, whether the space spans 27,000 square feet or a single, story-filled room.

Back in Sandpoint, their showroom embodies that same mix of imagination and intention. Visitors are greeted by a curated collection of furnishings and finishes: sparkling chandeliers, soft leathers, aged wood, sculptural lighting, and the occasional playful

accent that reminds you design should also make you smile. “We love when people walk in and start imagining what’s possible,” Jodie says. “That’s when the magic happens.”

Their design philosophy leans timeless, with an emphasis on natural materials, texture, and warmth. Each space is meant to feel lived-in, grounded, and effortlessly beautiful. It’s an approach that celebrates personality over perfection, a philosophy that resonates deeply with clients and builders alike.

Behind every project is a sense of grit and joy. LOFT THIRTY ONE’s signature neon sign says it best: “Screw it, let’s do it!” It’s a reminder that great design is equal parts boldness and trust—a creative leap taken together.

With new collaborations in motion and an ever-expanding network of builders and craftspeople, LOFT THIRTY ONE continues to push the boundaries of custom design. Their work may span states, but their foundation remains the same: a deep commitment to partnership, creativity, and heart.

Smarter Surgery: How Robotic Innovation Is Transforming Knee Replacement

Bonner General Health (BGH) is proud to announce the addition of Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA®Knee System to its state-of-the-art surgical technology, to its surgical services department. This innovative robotic platform enhances total knee replacement procedures, combining precision robotics with trusted, industry-leading implants, now available right here in Sandpoint.

Total joint replacement is one of the most commonly performed elective surgical procedures in the United States, helping hundreds of thousands of patients regain mobility and quality of life each year. As technology advances, these procedures are increasingly performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to recover comfortably at home. Bonner General Health is proud to bring this same level of advanced, patient-centered care to our community.

The ROSA Knee System, which stands for Robotic Surgical Assistant, is a robotically assisted surgical tool designed to help orthopedic surgeons perform total knee replacement with exceptional accuracy and consistency. The system uses detailed data and real-time feedback to assist with precise bone resections and to assess the condition of surrounding soft tissue during surgery. This information helps surgeons place the knee implant with the highest level of alignment and balance, tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy.

“My goal as a surgeon when performing knee replacements is to provide a knee joint that is well aligned with good soft tissue balance. This will allow the patient to gain optimal results after surgery. The ROSA knee system provides the latest tool to make an accurate evaluation during surgery of the balance and alignment. Contrary to what many patients think, the robot does not perform the surgery. It helps me to align the cutting jigs optimally and gives me precise feedback on balance so I can

accomplish my goal.” - Dr. Doug Cipriano, Bonner General Orthopedics.

The integration of ROSA technology supports surgeons in making complex, real-time decisions during surgery. Using computer-guided instruments, the system provides an added layer of control and flexibility, resulting in improved surgical accuracy and potentially better patient outcomes.

Among the many benefits of the ROSA Knee System are its potential to:

• Improve surgical precision through data-driven insights and robotic guidance

• Enhance implant alignment and positioning for a more natural knee motion

• Support faster recovery and improved comfort following surgery

• Personalize each procedure to fit the unique anatomy of every patient

Currently, two local orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Doug Cipriano and Dr. Michael Schicker, are performing total knee replacement procedures using the ROSA Knee System at BonnerGeneral Health. Both physicians are committed to providing the highest level of orthopedic care to the Sandpoint community, ensuring patients have access to cutting-edge surgical advancements close to home.

For individuals suffering from chronic knee pain or considering total knee replacement, the addition of the ROSA Knee System means more options for precise, minimally invasive care and more reasons to stay local for treatment.

To learn more about how the ROSA Knee System can benefit patients undergoing total knee replacement, contact Dr. Cipriano or Dr. Schicker through their respective practices or visit BonnerGeneral.org.

Beyond Resolutions

Try a January Joy List

Let’s be honest—New Year’s resolutions come with a lot of pressure. The word itself feels heavy, like something you have to fix. But what if January wasn’t about overhauling your life, and instead about infusing it with more of what lights you up?

Enter the January Joy List—a refreshing twist on the typical resolution. Instead of promising to eat less, do more, or finally tackle that inbox, try asking: What brings me joy? What makes me feel alive, curious, or calm?

Your list can be as simple or quirky as you want. Think:

• Rewatching your favorite childhood movie

• Taking a slow walk without your phone

• Fresh sheets and a good book

• Calling a friend just to laugh

HOMES

• Visiting a local bakery for the “just because” pastry

This isn’t about productivity—it’s about presence. And by filling January with little sparks of joy, you may find more motivation and clarity than any resolution could ever offer.

Here’s the beauty: your list doesn’t have to be long, and it definitely doesn’t have to be impressive. It just has to be you. Post it on your fridge. Scribble it in a notebook. Or keep it private and sacred.

The New Year doesn’t have to be a sprint toward self-improvement. Sometimes, the best way to begin again is by remembering what makes life sweet in the first place.

This January, skip the pressure. Start with joy.

SEASONAL TIP

Winter is the perfect time to refresh your indoor routines. Try starting your morning with warm lemon water, swap one evening of screen time for reading by lamplight, or create a quiet corner for reflection. Add houseplants for a pop of green and open the blinds during daylight to soak up natural light. These small shifts can boost your mood, energy, and overall wellness while the weather outside stays cold and quiet.

Reset Your Space, Reset Your Mind

After the busyness of the season, a quiet reset can work wonders for both your home and your mindset. Clearing out physical clutter helps create a sense of calm, making space not only for movement but for fresh ideas and energy.

Start small. Focus on one area at a time, such as a drawer, a shelf, or a neglected corner of your closet. These small wins add up quickly, making the process feel manageable instead of overwhelming.

As you clear, take the opportunity to part with things that no longer serve a purpose—expired pantry goods, unworn clothing, or forgotten holiday décor. Letting go of the unnecessary creates breathing room for what matters most.

Once you've cleared the space, add something that brings warmth or joy. A simple houseplant, a new throw blanket, or simply rearranging the furniture layout can transform a room's mood. These small changes create an environment that supports clarity, peace, and focus, just when you need it most.

Smart financial moves to make before year-end FINANCIAL FOCUS®

was written by

by

As the year winds down, it’s the perfect time to make some smart moves before the calendar flips to 2026. Think of it as a financial tune-up that could help with saving money and setting you up for success in the months ahead. Here are some things to consider.

• Don’t forget about required withdrawals. If you’re 73 or older, you’ll need to take your required minimum distribution from traditional retirement accounts to avoid a 25% penalty on any amount you should have withdrawn but didn’t. This rule also applies to some people who inherited retirement accounts, including certain Roth accounts.

• Use your flexible spending money. Got money sitting in a flexible spending account at work? Remember, these accounts follow a “use it or lose it” rule. Check with your HR department about your plan’s specific deadlines for spending the money and submitting receipts. Whether it’s that dental work you’ve been putting off or new prescription glasses you need, now’s the time to use those funds before they disappear.

• Boost your retirement savings. Consider ramping up your pretax retirement contributions before year-end. Not only will this help your future self, but it might also reduce your current tax bill. If your workplace plan allows it, you can even set up automatic increases for next year so you won’t have to remember to do it later.

• Share the wealth through gifting. In 2025, the current tax rules let you give family or friends up to $19,000 per person without affecting your lifetime gift tax exemption. Married couples can combine their allowances

to give up to $38,000 per person. Plus, you can pay someone’s tuition or medical bills directly without these payments counting against your gift limits at all.

• Navigate new tax changes. The recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act has made several tax provisions permanent, including lower individual tax rates and higher standard deductions. However, it also introduces new changes that might affect your situation. It’s worth sitting down with a financial advisor or tax professional to understand how these updates impact your specific circumstances.

• Examine your investments. Take some time to review your investment portfolio. Ask yourself: Did your investments perform as expected this year? Do they still align with your goals and your comfort level with risk? You might need to rebalance things to get back on track.

• Build up your emergency fund. It’s ideal to have enough cash saved to cover three to six months of living expenses in an easily accessible account. This safety net can prevent you from having to raid your retirement savings when unexpected expenses pop up.

• Review your estate planning documents. This is especially important if you’ve had major life changes like marriage, divorce or a new baby. Don’t forget to check the beneficiary designations on all your bank and brokerage accounts, as well as life insurance policies –these often override what’s written in your will.

Taking care of these financial housekeeping tasks now can help you start the new year on solid ground.

The Mouth: A Mirror to Your Health

YOUR HEALTH HAS A TELL

It may come as a surprise, but your mouth can reveal far more than cavities and plaque buildup. Dentists are often the first health professionals to spot signs of systemic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and even cancer. During routine checkups, your dentist may notice the early warning signs of more significant issues.

Diabetes: More Than a Sweet Tooth

One of the most common conditions dentists help identify is diabetes. Symptoms such as persistent dry mouth, gum inflammation, slow-healing sores, or frequent infections can signal blood sugar irregularities. Since these signs appear in the mouth before a patient may experience other symptoms, dentists often refer patients for testing, potentially allowing for the early detection of diabetes.

Gum Health and Heart Disease

Your gums do more than anchor your teeth—they can mirror your cardiovascular health. Gum disease (periodontitis) is linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Dentists trained to recognize chronic inflammation, receding gums, or loose teeth may alert patients to get their heart checked. The mouth is part of the body’s vascular system, after all, and inflammation in one area can signal inflammation elsewhere.

Oral Clues to Autoimmune Disorders

Conditions such as lupus, Crohn’s disease, or Sjögren’s syndrome often first appear in the mouth. Dentists may observe symptoms like severe dry mouth, ulcers, or a red, inflamed tongue that doesn’t respond to typical treatment. By identifying these signs early, dental professionals can prompt further testing and guide patients toward a diagnosis that might have otherwise been delayed for years.

Cancer Detection: Not Just Oral Cancer

Dentists are trained to check for oral cancers during routine exams, looking at the tongue, cheeks, gums, and throat. However, they can also identify signs that may indicate other types of cancer. Unusual bleeding, lumps, discoloration, or sores that don’t heal may be indicative of something more serious. Some systemic cancers can also suppress the immune system, making the mouth more susceptible to infection.

The Power of Prevention

Because dental visits are more frequent for many people than doctor visits, dentists are in a unique position to identify systemic issues early. When oral signs are identified and linked to broader concerns, patients can initiate treatment or monitoring sooner. This proactive approach not only improves outcomes but can sometimes save lives.

The Link Between Bone Loss and Osteoporosis

Dentists regularly take X-rays of the jawbone to assess oral health. But a shrinking or thinning jawbone can also indicate early signs of osteoporosis. Since this condition often goes undiagnosed until

Botox Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

How to Get Natural Results

Bri Williams, WHNP-BC Refined Aesthetics Med Spa, pllc SandpointMedSpa.com 215 Cedar St., Sandpoint 208.304.7535

When it comes to Botox, one of the biggest misconceptions is that everyone needs the same amount in the same places to get great results. The truth? Botox should always be tailored to your unique facial anatomy, muscle strength, and aesthetic goals.

Natural-looking Botox doesn’t come from using less product—it comes from using the right amount, in the right areas, with the right technique. A skilled provider will study your expressions, assess your muscle activity, and consider how your face moves both at rest and in motion.

For example, someone with strong forehead muscles may need more units than someone with a lighter muscle pull, but that doesn’t mean they’ll look frozen. On the flip side, overtreating a delicate area like the brow can lead to drooping or a “spocked” look. Subtle adjustments in dosage and placement can make all the difference between a refreshed appearance and one that looks “done.”

Communication is key. Before your treatment, discuss what you’re hoping to achieve- whether it’s softening lines, preventing deeper wrinkles, or simply maintaining a youthful look. Don’t hesitate to ask your provider how they personalize the plan for you.

Finally, remember that Botox is both an art and a science. No two faces are the same, and your treatment plan shouldn’t be either. When customized properly, Botox enhances your natural beautynever erases it.

a fracture occurs, a dentist’s observation may be a critical first step in prevention.

Stress and Mental Health on Display

Grinding, jaw clenching, and mouth sores can all be physical manifestations of stress or anxiety. Dentists can often detect these patterns and open the door for a broader conversation about mental health, something patients may not even realize is affecting them. In some cases, dentists can recommend bite guards or refer patients to a mental health professional for further support.

Sleep Apnea and Oral Anatomy

Dentists can also play a role in identifying sleep apnea, especially when examining the structure of the jaw, palate, and throat. Symptoms like a scalloped tongue or teeth worn down from grinding may indicate interrupted sleep. Dentists trained in sleep medicine often collaborate with sleep specialists to arrange for further testing and even customfit oral appliances that help manage the condition.

Pregnancy and Periodontal Health

Pregnant women experience hormonal fluctuations that can impact their gum health. Dentists can identify pregnancy-related gingivitis, which may be linked to preterm birth or low birth weight if untreated. This is why it’s crucial for expecting mothers to maintain regular dental visits and hygiene routines.

Oral Signs of Immune Suppression

When the immune system is under significant strain, the mouth often shows it first. Persistent thrush, unusual spots on the tongue, or sudden gum problems can signal deeper health concerns. Dentists trained to recognize these signs help connect patients with physicians for appropriate testing.

Medication Side Effects Revealed in the Mouth

Dry mouth, tissue overgrowth, discoloration, and even mouth ulcers can be side effects of prescription drugs. Dentists are often the first to notice these effects and can adjust care or consult with the patient’s physician to consider alternatives.

Collaborative Care for Better Outcomes

Today’s best dental practices take an integrated approach, collaborating with general physicians, endocrinologists, cardiologists, and other specialists. With patient permission, dentists can share observations that might be crucial for broader medical decisions.

The next time you’re in the dental chair, remember—your dentist is doing more than cleaning your teeth. They’re performing a fullbody health check, watching for subtle changes that could indicate something far beyond your smile. When it comes to whole-body wellness, oral health is anything but separate.

BECAUSE DENTAL VISITS ARE MORE FREQUENT FOR MANY PEOPLE THAN DOCTOR VISITS, DENTISTS ARE IN A UNIQUE POSITION TO IDENTIFY SYSTEMIC ISSUES EARLY.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS WINTER 2025-2026

February 21

M18th Annual

Heart Ball

ark your calendar for February 21, 2026, as the Bonner General Health Foundation hosts its 18th Annual Heart Ball, an elegant evening dedicated to community, compassion, and care. All proceeds from the event will support the Foundation’s signature project this year: Transitional Care through Swing Beds.

Swing beds enable patients in rural hospitals to transition seamlessly from acute care to skilled nursing care without the need for relocation, thereby bringing continuity, comfort, and dignity to their recovery. Bonner General Health By keeping this vital service available locally, Bonner General ensures that community members have access to high-quality transitional care, without the burden of traveling far from home.

The Heart Ball offers attendees the chance to dine exquisitely, enjoy inspiring stories, and participate in live and silent auctions. It’s more than a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of what happens when neighbors unite for the health of their own. The Foundation invites individuals, families, businesses, and sponsors to join in this special evening of giving.

Whether you attend, sponsor, or donate, your support will help strengthen local care right here in Sandpoint and beyond. For more details, to purchase tickets, or become a sponsor, visit BonnerGeneral.org.
