Meet Steve Russo, Publisher Executive Director | steve@like-media.com
Winter has a way of slowing us down. The noise fades, the air sharpens, and we start to notice the things that matter most: faith, family, and the people who make this community feel like home. It’s a season that reminds us to look up, to look around, and to give thanks for the light that still shines in the world.
For over a decade, our mission has been to make a positive impact in the places where we live and work. We’ve achieved this by sharing the stories of local nonprofits and the individuals and organizations quietly doing the hard work of helping others. Those stories have reminded us just how generous this region really is. And that same generosity was evident again through The Finest, where your votes did more than just choose winners; they celebrated the people and businesses that make this community shine.
This winter, we’re building on that momentum with a new initiative to recognize local businesses that give back—owners and teams who pour their time, talent, and heart into helping others. Too often their generosity goes unseen. We want to change that.

If you know of a company making a real difference through donations, volunteerism, community events, or everyday acts of kindness, we’d love to hear from you. Nominate them by emailing editorial@like-media.com and help us shine a light on the finest kind of leadership, the kind that serves.
And while this season is known for giving, it also reminds us of the greatest gift ever given: the gift of hope, born in a manger over two thousand years ago. That truth still speaks quietly through every act of kindness, every open door, and every effort to serve.
From all of us here, thank you for being part of our community, for believing in the good, and for helping us keep it shining.
Have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
253 Lifestyle Magazine’s Finest 2025 celebrates the people and businesses that continue to define the spirit of the South Sound. This year’s winners reflect connection, commitment, and the everyday work that strengthens the 253. And inside, When Heaven Pointed to Earth offers a meaningful look at the star and the story of Immanuel, inviting readers to hear the good news this season.

Founded in Enumclaw, Washington, by survivors Katy TinneyOlson, Kerry Solmonsen, and Shelly Tinney-Miller, the organization has grown from a small idea into a nationwide movement driven by compassion and lived experience. Their mission is simple: every dollar raised goes directly to Warriors in need. The Cancer Cartel funds its work through luxury fashion resale, brand partnerships, and community events, providing meaningful financial relief to people navigating treatment across the country. They have supported more than 1,700 Warriors in 48 states, with plans to reach all 50. Every donation provides stability, dignity, and hope, offering immediate impact at moments when families need it most.

Thank you, 253, for showing up once again to celebrate what makes this place more than just a zip code, more than just a region. The 2025 Finest Awards aren’t just about who’s “best.” They’re about belonging, about the local dreamers, doers, and difference-makers who remind us that community is built, not bought.
Each vote cast this year was more than recognition; it was a rally cry for locals. It said we believe in small business, we believe in connection, and we believe that when we invest in each other, everyone wins. The community members and businesses you recognized help shape the pulse of the 253, creating jobs, giving back, and adding color and character to every corner of our community.
This is what local excellence looks like in 2025, not perfection, but passion. Not noise, but authenticity. The 253 Lifestyle Magazine’s Finest isn’t about chasing trends; it’s about standing together in what lasts: trust, craftsmanship, and care for the people right next door.
Thank you for being part of something real. For showing that even in a fast-moving world, the heart of the 253 still beats strongest close to home. Here’s to another year of celebrating our people, our places, and the stories that make this community shine.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

TURNING COMPASSION INTO FINANCIAL RELIEF FOR CANCER PATIENTS NATIONWIDE
apowerhouse non-profit is changing the way cancer Warriors receive support. Founded in Enumclaw, Washington, by Katy Tinney-Olson, Kerry Solmonsen, and Shelly Tinney-Miller, The Cancer Cartel has grown from a small idea into a national movement dedicated to helping those facing the staggering financial burden of cancer.
“Six years ago, Katy and Kerry were driving home from volunteering at Northwest Harvest, reflecting on the deep gratitude they felt for their survivorship and the staggering cost of fighting cancer—not just medical bills, but every expense that piles up along the way,” the co-founders explain. The idea took off when Katy brought her sister Shelly into the conversation. “What started with collecting and selling donated designer fashion quickly expanded through brand partnerships and events into the powerhouse organization we are today.”
From the start, the mission was clear: every dollar raised goes directly to Warriors in need. Early efforts were hands-on, simple, and unforgettable. “Our first solution was simple and direct: we bought Visa gift cards, went to Seattle Cancer Care, and handed them out to people waiting outside the pharmacy. The reactions were unforgettable.” When COVID-19 hit, the organization pivoted to virtual interviews and grants via Zoom, creating moments of relief and joy for countless recipients.
Since then, The Cancer Cartel has supported over 1,700 Warriors and granted $1.1 million to individuals across 48 states, with plans to reach all 50 this year. Local stories highlight the tangible impact: a Puget Sound mom could cover her power bill and gas, giving her “the first full night of sleep in months.” A rural Washington man, choosing between groceries and gas, felt “someone had wrapped their arms around his whole life and held it steady.”

And a Tacoma single dad was able to keep his family in their home, describing the support as “a lifeline in the middle of the storm.”
Applications for financial assistance are submitted by hospital-employed case managers or social workers, ensuring proper vetting. The grant portal opens at 9 am Pacific Time on the first business day of each month, filling within minutes due to high demand.
Looking ahead to 2026, The Cancer Cartel’s annual gala—set for May 16, 2026, at the Foss Waterway Museum & Seaport— promises an evening of food, fun, and fundraising. The event welcomes sponsors, volunteers, and ticketed guests to contribute directly to Warriors in need. Other signature events include Fashion Funds the Fight, luxury resale fundraisers, and a golf tournament in Simi Valley, California. Supporters can also participate year-round through recurring monthly pledges, donations in cash, stock, crypto, or in-kind, and by joining the Donate Designer program. “Whether it is one special item or an entire collection, every donation helps us say yes to more Warriors and keep our mission thriving.” Youth can get involved through the Junior Ambassador Program, gaining leadership experience while supporting local initiatives.
In 2026 and beyond, The Cancer Cartel aims to expand its impact, grow monthly support, and reach more Warriors nationwide. “We are the Good Cartel, a powerful force of passionate people united in doing as much good as possible. Every action, big or small, counts. Join us, follow our journey, share our story, and help us keep saying yes to Warriors who need us.”

THE STAR AND THE STORY OF IMMANUEL
It’s one of the most recognized images in human history: a star shining above a manger in Bethlehem. It’s been painted, sung about, and printed on countless Christmas cards. But behind the nativity scenes and pageants lies one of the most remarkable truths in all of Scripture: the Creator of the heavens used His own creation to announce His arrival.
Matthew tells us about a group of wise men from the east, learned men who studied both the stars and the sacred writings of old. They likely came from the region once ruled by Babylon, where generations earlier the prophet Daniel had served as chief among the Magi. Through him, echoes of Israel’s hope had been preserved, whispers of a coming King, a promised Messiah, and even the prophecy that “a star shall come out of Jacob.”
So when a light appeared that was unlike any they had ever seen, they recognized its meaning. This wasn’t a coincidence

or a cosmic curiosity; it was fulfillment. What Daniel had foretold, the heavens were now declaring. And they followed.
That journey would take them hundreds of miles, across deserts and danger, into the heart of Judea. They had no map, only a star that moved, stopped, and stood over the very place where the Christ child lay. The detail is easy to miss but profound in meaning: the same God who spoke light into existence in Genesis was now using that light to declare His own birth. The heavens were literally pointing to earth.
John begins his gospel not with shepherds or angels but with eternity:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

That’s the heart of Christmas, the Incarnation. God didn’t send an idea, a philosophy, or a symbolic hope. He came Himself. The infinite became an infant. The Maker of the stars entered the world beneath them.
Think about that. The hands that flung galaxies into orbit were now small enough to fit inside Mary’s palm. The same voice that thundered, “Let there be light,” was now the soft cry of a newborn. The very Author of life was breathing our air.
This is the mystery of Christmas—not sentimental nostalgia, but the unthinkable humility of God. The Word became flesh, and the heavens couldn’t stay silent about it.
And tucked into Matthew’s account is another name: Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” It’s not just poetic. It’s personal. The child in the manger wasn’t a symbol of hope; He was hope. He was God, here, among His people.
The star was more than a miracle of astronomy; it was a declaration. Psalm 19 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” That night in Bethlehem, they did precisely that, not abstractly, but personally. Some scholars believe the Star of Bethlehem may have been a rare planetary alignment, a supernova, or something beyond the realm of science altogether. But the point isn’t how it happened – it’s why.
The Magi saw that light and came to worship. They brought gold for a King, frankincense for a God, and myrrh for the One who would one day die. Every gift spoke of His purpose. They arrived as seekers of truth and left as worshipers of the Truth Himself. And in that humble house, these men who had searched the skies finally saw Immanuel—God with us!
It’s easy to read the Christmas story and view it as ancient history, but the pattern remains unchanged. God still reveals Himself to those who seek Him. He still draws outsiders in. Those Magi represent every one of us who has ever looked for meaning, who

“THE TRUE LIGHT THAT GIVES LIGHT TO EVERYONE WAS COMING INTO THE World.”

has ever followed a faint light through the dark, hoping it leads to something real. They remind us that God’s invitation extends beyond borders, beyond religion, beyond what we think we know.
And when we finally come face to face with Jesus, like those travelers, we realize the light we were following wasn’t far away after all. It was leading us home to Immanuel.
John wrote, “The true Light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” That’s the miracle of the Incarnation, not that a star appeared in the sky, but that the Light of the world stepped into human form.
The same Jesus who spoke galaxies into existence entered human time and space to rescue it. He didn’t just come to be admired. He came to redeem. He didn’t just shine from afar. He stepped into the darkness so He could bring us out of it. That’s why the Christmas story still matters, because every generation needs that light again. Every heart needs to know Immanuel, the God who is not far away but always near.
Two thousand years later, we still hang stars on trees and rooftops. Maybe we don’t think much about what they mean. But the truth remains: that star was never about astronomy. It was about an invitation.
The Magi saw it and came. The shepherds heard it and ran. Mary held it in her arms. And today, that same light still calls to hearts that are searching. Christmas isn’t just about looking back to a manger. It’s about realizing that the same God who once used a star to guide strangers still uses light to guide us – sometimes in ways we don’t expect, sometimes right where we are. Because the God who once pointed heaven to earth still points hearts to Himself.
And His name is still Immanuel. God with us!

Finding the right resurfacing treatment for you
At Catalyst Medspa, radiant, youthful skin is built layer by layer. Whether you want subtle brightening or transformative rejuvenation, our resurfacing treatments are customized for your skin type, goals, and lifestyle. From microneedling to chemical peels, Morpheus8 RF, and CO₂ laser resurfacing, we help you choose the right treatment for your season of renewal.
As the seasons shift, it’s the perfect time to give your skin a fresh start. Sun exposure, aging, and environmental stress gradually diminish smoothness and elasticity. The good news? Modern resurfacing treatments can safely and effectively restore youthful, healthy skin.

Our medical experts offer a full menu of options tailored to different needs:
• Microneedling uses ultra-fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries that stimulate collagen and elastin. It smooths fine lines, softens acne scars, and refines texture with minimal downtime — a favorite for clients who want results that build naturally over time.
• Chemical Peels dissolve dull, damaged surface cells using customized medical-grade solutions. They brighten the complexion, even pigmentation, and restore clarity in just a few days, leaving skin radiant and refreshed.

• Morpheus8 RF Microneedling combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to tighten deeper dermal layers. It firms laxity around the jawline, neck, and eyes while improving overall smoothness and contour.
• CO₂ Laser Resurfacing is the gold standard for dramatic rejuvenation. By precisely vaporizing damaged skin cells and triggering collagen renewal, it reduces wrinkles, tightens crepey skin, and delivers lasting improvement in tone and texture.
“There’s no one-size-fits-all approach,” says Dr. Erin Seefeldt, Medical Director at Catalyst Medspa. “Each treatment works differently in the skin’s layers, from gentle exfoliation at the surface to deep collagen remodeling. The key is matching the right method to the individual.”
We also combine and sequence treatments to address multiple skin layers. A personalized plan might start with microneedling or a peel to prepare the surface, followed by Morpheus8 RF or CO₂ laser to strengthen and tighten from within. This layering enhances collagen stimulation, optimizes healing, and delivers smoother, firmer, more luminous results over a series of sessions.
This is the ideal time for resurfacing, when cooler temperatures and less sun allow your skin to heal optimally. Book your complimentary resurfacing consultation or treatment today to discover your personalized path to radiant, confident skin.

The holidays are meant to be joyful, not stressful. Whether you’re hosting a big family gathering or a cozy night with close friends, try these simple tips to make entertaining this season feel festive, not frantic:
1 2 3
Set the Mood Early Light seasonal candles (think pine, clove, or cranberry), turn on a mellow playlist, and dim overhead lights in favor of string lights or lamps. A warm atmosphere goes a long way.
Prep & Plate Ahead
Choose appetizers and desserts that can be made the night before. Arrange serving platters ahead of time so you can enjoy the gathering instead of being stuck in the kitchen.
Plan a Memory Moment
Whether it’s a DIY ornament station for kids or a quick round of holiday-themed trivia for adults, include a small activity that brings everyone together.

Let’s be honest—New Year’s resolutions come with a lot of pressure. The word itself feels heavy, like something you have to fix. But what if January wasn’t about overhauling your life, and instead about infusing it with more of what lights you up?
Enter the January Joy List—a refreshing twist on the typical resolution. Instead of promising to eat less, do more, or finally tackle that inbox, try asking: What brings me joy? What makes me feel alive, curious, or calm?
Your list can be as simple or quirky as you want. Think:
• Rewatching your favorite childhood movie
• Taking a slow walk without your phone
• Fresh sheets and a good book
• Calling a friend just to laugh
• Visiting a local bakery for the “just because” pastry
This isn’t about productivity—it’s about presence. And by filling January with little sparks of joy, you may find more motivation and clarity than any resolution could ever offer.
Here’s the beauty: your list doesn’t have to be long, and it definitely doesn’t have to be impressive. It just has to be you. Post it on your fridge. Scribble it in a notebook. Or keep it private and sacred.
The New Year doesn’t have to be a sprint toward self-improvement. Sometimes, the best way to begin again is by remembering what makes life sweet in the first place.
This January, skip the pressure. Start with joy.

Winter is the perfect time to refresh your indoor routines. Try starting your morning with warm lemon water, swap one evening of screen time for reading by lamplight, or create a quiet corner for reflection. Add houseplants for a pop of green and open the blinds during daylight to soak up natural light. These small shifts can boost your mood, energy, and overall wellness while the weather outside stays cold and quiet.

After the busyness of the season, a quiet reset can work wonders for both your home and your mindset. Clearing out physical clutter helps create a sense of calm, making space not only for movement but for fresh ideas and energy.
Start small. Focus on one area at a time, such as a drawer, a shelf, or a neglected corner of your closet. These small wins add up quickly, making the process feel manageable instead of overwhelming.
As you clear, take the opportunity to part with things that no longer serve a purpose—expired pantry goods, unworn clothing, or forgotten holiday décor. Letting go of the unnecessary creates breathing room for what matters most.

Once you've cleared the space, add something that brings warmth or joy. A simple houseplant, a new throw blanket, or simply rearranging the furniture layout can transform a room's mood. These small changes create an environment that supports clarity, peace, and focus, just when you need it most.

On New Year’s Eve at the Avelon Ballroom in Tacoma, she will present the 5th Annual Samoa Fashion Show, themed Tula’i Fou (“Arise Anew”).
This year marks a turning point as the event stands independently, celebrating Samoan designers and their artistry in the heart of Tacoma’s 6th Ave district—a hub for creativity and cultural exchange. Guests will enjoy a full VIP experience, featuring a red-carpet entrance with interviews, complimentary food, an open bar, live entertainment, and the opportunity to meet the designers who bring these garments to life.
A special highlight will be the appearance of Marina Davis, the internationally acclaimed Samoan artist from Australia, known for her chart-topping hit “Lau Samoa.”
For Tinitali, the show is more than fashion—it’s a way to honor heritage, empower designers, and keep Samoan culture thriving. By providing a free platform for creators, Teu Runway has inspired new businesses, connected communities, and placed Samoan talent on a global stage.
