Meet Steve Russo, Publisher Executive Director steve@like-media.com
Winter has a way of slowing us down. The noise fades, the air sharpens, and we start to notice the things that matter most: faith, family, and the people who make this community feel like home. It’s a season that reminds us to look up, to look around, and to give thanks for the light that still shines in the world.
For over a decade, our mission has been to make a positive impact in the places where we live and work. We’ve achieved this by sharing the stories of local nonprofits and the individuals and organizations quietly doing the hard work of helping others. Those stories have reminded us just how generous this region really is. And that same generosity was evident again through The Finest, where your votes did more than just choose winners; they celebrated the people and businesses that make this community shine.
This winter, we’re building on that momentum with a new initiative to recognize local businesses that give back—owners and teams who pour their time, talent, and heart into helping others. Too often their generosity goes unseen. We want to change that.

If you know of a company making a real difference through donations, volunteerism, community events, or everyday acts of kindness, we’d love to hear from you. Nominate them by emailing editorial@ like-media.com and help us shine a light on the finest kind of leadership, the kind that serves.
And while this season is known for giving, it also reminds us of the greatest gift ever given: the gift of hope, born in a manger over two thousand years ago. That truth still speaks quietly through every act of kindness, every open door, and every effort to serve.
From all of us here, thank you for being part of our community, for believing in the good, and for helping us keep it shining.
Have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Gig Harbor Living Local’s Finest 2025 celebrates the businesses and individuals who continue to strengthen our harbor community. This year’s winners reflect commitment, consistency, and the connection that defines Gig Harbor. Inside, our feature on Commencement Bank highlights their dedication to serving local clients with dependable guidance and a community-focused approach, offering readers a closer look at the people behind their trusted financial services.

DONATED TO LOCAL NONPROFITS IN 2025 $100K over
We’re so grateful to have helped families find their place in Gig Harbor and beyond — and through the Chelsea Paige Foundation, to continue giving back to the community that inspires everything we do.

The Mustard Seed Project has been strengthening the Key Peninsula since 2006 by helping local seniors remain connected, supported, and able to age where they feel at home. What began as a simple idea has grown into a trusted network shaped around the needs of this rural community. Transportation is one of their most essential services, with volunteer drivers and a wheelchair-accessible shuttle providing rides to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other essential destinations.
The Mustard Seed Café at the Crandall Center offers warm meals, exercise classes, community activities, and a welcoming place to gather. At the same time, The Village provides assisted living and memory care built on the Green House Project model. Partnerships bring health clinics, intergenerational programs, art activities, and hundreds of holiday cards and gift bags to local seniors. With volunteers at the heart of every effort, The Mustard Seed Project continues to strengthen the Key Peninsula through compassion, collaboration, and care.

Like Media, producer of Gig Harbor Living Local, recognizes non-profits’ invaluable contributions. We amplify their voices, share inspiring stories, and engage with organizations to support their missions and inspire action.

The Power of Local Still Shines Bright
Thank you, Gig Harbor, for showing up once again to celebrate what makes this place more than just a zip code, more than just a region. The 2025 Finest Awards aren’t just about who’s “best.” They’re about belonging, about the local dreamers, doers, and difference-makers who remind us that community is built, not bought.
Each vote cast this year was more than recognition; it was a rally cry for locals. It said we believe in small business, we believe in connection, and we believe that when we invest in each other, everyone wins. The community members and businesses you recognized help shape the pulse of Gig Harbor, creating jobs, giving back, and adding color and character to every corner of our community.
This is what local excellence looks like in 2025, not perfection, but passion. Not noise, but authenticity. The Gig Harbor Living Local’s Finest isn’t about chasing trends; it’s about standing together in what lasts: trust, craftsmanship, and care for the people right next door.
Thank you for being part of something real. For showing that even in a fast-moving world, the heart of Gig Harbor still beats strongest close to home. Here’s to another year of celebrating our people, our places, and the stories that make our community shine.

Band and Choir Director - Goodman Middle School
For Chance Busey, music is more than performance—it’s connection, legacy, and purpose. Named Gig Harbor Living Local’s 2025 Finest Teacher, Chance now leads the Band and Choir programs at Goodman Middle School, a position once held by the legendary Julie Allison and one he holds in the highest regard. Each day, he inspires students to find confidence, expression, and belonging through music.
His path to teaching wasn’t straightforward. After experiences in youth sports, sales, and entrepreneurship, he found himself drawn back to the very place that first shaped him. “Mr. Swanson at Gig Harbor High School asked if I could help with the same band program that helped raise me,” Chance shares. “That experience reignited my passion for teaching.” He continues to honor mentors like Mr. Hunt, Mr. Abrahamson, Mr. Swanson, and Dr. Gilbert by guiding his own students with the same leadership, encouragement, and belief they once instilled in him.
For Chance, moments of connection define his work. He recalls a family sharing how a concert piece sparked recognition in their grandfather living with Alzheimer’s—an experience that, through his students’ performance, gave him a whole new appreciation for the power of music and the impact of what they create together. And of course, he invites the community to share in that joy: “Come to a concert! You’ll be amazed by what our local students are creating.”

Gary Parker
HARBOR LOCAL’S
Gary Parker has spent his life building connections, first in technology with IBM and Intel, and now around the smoker at BBQ2U. What began as a simple retirement project fueled by a love of good barbecue has become a cornerstone of community in Gig Harbor. From weekly fundraisers and free Tuesday bingo for seniors to offering local authors a place to share their work, Gary’s mission has always been about more than barbecue—it’s about people.
Being named Gig Harbor Living Local’s 2025 Finest Person of the Year is an honor he calls both humbling and meaningful. “It tells me the community sees me, and that matters,” he shares. “Knowing that what we’re doing is touching lives drives me to keep going and be an even bigger influence for good.”
For Gary, success isn’t measured in profits but in people—the smiles, conversations, and small moments that make a hard day a little easier. Inside BBQ2U, a “Thank You” wall filled with cards and photos captures that spirit. It’s a daily reminder of why he does what he does: to serve others, strengthen community, and spread kindness wherever possible. “People matter,” he says simply. “That’s what this is all about.”

Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank & Community Services
Honored as the 2025 Gig Harbor Living Local’s Finest Organization/ Nonprofit of the Year, Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank & Community Services (GHP FISH) continues a legacy of compassion that began in 1976. What started with neighbors answering calls from their homes to provide childcare, meals, and transportation has grown into a cornerstone nonprofit serving more than 900 families each month throughout Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula.
“This recognition is especially meaningful as we approach our 50th year of service,” shares the GHP FISH team. “Our volunteers and donors make everything possible.”
With more than 300 dedicated volunteers and the generosity of countless community partners, GHP FISH provides groceries, clothing,
household goods, financial aid, and educational assistance—all offered with dignity, compassion, and encouragement. Their 10,600-square-foot facility, completed in 2022, was designed specifically for their mission, creating room for self-shopping, a free boutique, and efficient storage and distribution to meet growing needs.
Through monthly grocery store food drives, annual holiday toy programs, and partnerships with local schools, churches, civic groups, and generous community members, GHP FISH continues to serve as a steady lifeline for neighbors in need, and a lasting reminder that community thrives when people care for one another.

Tiffany Brooks
In a community defined by generosity and heart, Tiffany Brooks has built a business that reflects both. As the 2025 recipient of Gig Harbor Living Local’s Finest Customer Service Person of the Year, she’s recognized for creating experiences that make people feel seen, valued, and appreciated with every interaction.
Much of Tiffany’s career was spent in luxury retail management, where she learned that true customer care is about creating meaningful moments. “In luxury retail, we often say, ‘It’s showtime,’ because the customer experience always comes first,” she shares. That mindset became the foundation for Curated Gig Harbor—a space where gifting, storytelling, and genuine connection come together.
Her approach is guided by authenticity, consistency, and care. From helping someone find a last-minute sympathy gift to designing a corporate gifting program, Tiffany listens first, ensuring every choice feels intentional. “The way customers shop with intention has shaped how Curated operates,” she says. “I’m constantly inspired to highlight local makers and create opportunities to give back through partnerships and events.” Grateful for the encouragement she receives, Tiffany continues to believe that when you give with intention, you create something far greater than the gift itself—it builds connection.

Celebrated as 2025 Gig Harbor Living Local’s Finest Community Event, the Maritime Gig Festival continues a decades-long tradition that brings the community together each June. What began as a parade organized by local fishermen has grown into Gig Harbor’s signature celebration of heritage and connection. Since 1991, families and friends have gathered downtown for the Kiwanis pancake breakfast, colorful parade, vendor fair, car show, live music, and the Blessing of the Fleet—a weekend that captures the spirit of Gig Harbor.

“Knowing that our community truly loves and appreciates the Maritime Gig Festival means the world to our small but mighty staff of six,” shares Miriam Battson, President/CEO of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. She credits the City of Gig Harbor, volunteers, sponsors, and longtime coordinator Lynette Kozuma for helping it thrive.
Looking ahead, the Chamber is preparing for 2026 and Gig Harbor’s 250th Independence celebration.

Their team has continued to grow in skill and dedication, always working to understand each homeowner’s vision.
The Kelleys raised their family in Gig Harbor, supporting local schools, sports, music, church, and organizations like Fish Foodbank. THANK YOU TO OUR

What comes to mind when you think about your bank? If you’re like many of us, it’s account balances, loan payments, mobile apps, and maybe your favorite teller at your closest branch. But what if where we keep our money matters more than we think?
When you choose a local bank, it not only impacts your personal finances but also the health of your community. Community banks may be small, but their influence runs deep. Gig Harbor’s Commencement Bank is a perfect example of how local banking can make a meaningful difference. Since opening their doors in 2023, they have quickly become a trusted resource for residents and businesses alike, offering expertise with a personal touch that is hard to find elsewhere.
“What makes us different is that we offer the sophistication and expertise of larger banks, but with the accessibility and personal attention that you can only get from a local bank,” says Allisha McVay, Commencement Bank Market Manager & Relationship Banking Officer. “That combination allows us to support both businesses and individuals in meaningful ways that make a genuine difference in our community.”
Beyond banking, Commencement Bank invests its time and resources into the Gig Harbor community it serves. The bank reinvests local deposits into business loans and community projects right here at home. It might be helping a small business owner expand, financing a new piece of equipment, or working with nonprofits to strengthen their reach—the results of banking local ripple far beyond the teller line.
They are passionate about participating in their favorite local pastimes that bring families together for safe and fun

events. With a substantial amount of their resources going directly back to Gig Harbor, you’ll see them at almost every local event. Their parking lot has been transformed into everything from car show lots and fashion show runways to trick-or-treat stops and fundraising hubs. “Giving back is a large part of who we are as a bank. From supporting local nonprofits to sponsoring community events and volunteering, we see it as our responsibility to help Gig Harbor thrive,” says McVay.
At the heart of Commencement Bank's approach are relationships. The team takes the time to understand clients’ goals, tailoring business loans that help local entrepreneurs grow and finding creative solutions for families navigating major life milestones.
If you are not convinced yet, consider this: the bankers who work here also live here, and they are deeply invested in every client they serve. “With so many banks consolidating and changing names and faces, I think it’s important for Gig Harbor to have a community bank that feels steady and consistent,” says McVay. “Our customers know they can count on us to be here, with local decision-makers and familiar people they trust.”
At the end of the day, Commencement Bank represents something larger than banking. It’s about building stability, creating connections, and ensuring that Gig Harbor continues to thrive, one relationship at a time.

COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR LOCAL SENIORS by LIKE MEDIA

Each space is designed to support dignity, independence, and a true sense of belonging.
On the Key Peninsula, where neighbors still look out for one another, The Mustard Seed Project has been quietly changing lives since 2006. What began as a simple idea to help local elders remain in their homes and community as they age has grown into a trusted network of programs, volunteers, and partnerships that keep seniors connected, supported, and thriving.
Programs are tailored to the challenges of this rural area, where resources and transportation can be limited. “We listen closely to our community and build programs around what people truly need,” says Programs Manager Julie Crane. “Our goal is to make sure every senior has the choice to age safely and comfortably where they feel at home.”
Transportation is one of the organization’s most essential services. Volunteer drivers provide rides for seniors and people with disabilities to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other important destinations. A wheelchairaccessible shuttle helps reach even more residents. For many, this program is a lifeline that allows them to maintain independence and avoid isolation.
The Mustard Seed Café, located at the Crandall Center, has become another cornerstone of connection. This welcoming senior center offers a warm meal and a place to gather with friends, attend exercise classes, or take part in community activities. The café shuttle brings people together twice a week, creating a space where seniors can stay active and engaged. One guest summed it up perfectly: “I hope you have a place like this when you’re older, where they take good care of you, like you take care of us.”

Whether someone gives an afternoon or a full day each week, their efforts make a real difference in the lives of Key Peninsula seniors.
The Village is central to the organization’s vision as the Key Peninsula’s first assisted living and memory care community. Built on the Green House Project model, The Village emphasizes smaller, home-like settings that nurture relationships between residents and staff. Each space is designed to support dignity, independence, and a true sense of belonging—values that guide every part of The Mustard Seed Project’s work.
The Mustard Seed Project’s approach to elder care is unique because it’s shaped around the needs of a small, rural community. By offering both in-home support and long-term residential options, the organization ensures that seniors have real choices as they age.
Partnerships also play a major role in expanding their reach. Collaborations with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health

Department, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, and local schools have brought health clinics, intergenerational activities, and art programs to the community. During the holidays, local students write hundreds of cards for seniors, and volunteers deliver over 150 gift bags each year.
Volunteers remain the foundation of the organization, helping with everything from meal delivery and yard care to home maintenance and event support. Whether someone gives an afternoon or a full day each week, their efforts make a real difference in the lives of Key Peninsula seniors.
The Mustard Seed Project continues to grow and evolve, always guided by the needs of the people it serves. Its integrity, compassion, and collaboration have created a legacy of care that strengthens the entire Key Peninsula community.

A Gig Harbor destination for adventure, creativity, and connection

For siblings Andrew and Charlie Youngchild, the spark that became Lost Star Tabletop Gaming Outfitter began with a shared love for imagination, connection, and the kind of childhood memories that never fade. When their careers were interrupted in 2019, they took it as a sign to build something lasting— something that could bring people together through creativity and play. “Parts of our childhood can never be replaced,” they share, “but those unforgettable, impactful memories can be created for others.”
By 2020, Lost Star was officially founded, and after exploring numerous potential spaces, their vision came to life in 2021 with the discovery of their location on Harborview Drive. As natives of Gig Harbor, Andrew and Charlie felt a strong pull to open their store in the community they call home—a place where imagination thrives, friendships form, and the next generation discovers the magic of tabletop gaming.
Inside their cozy 800-square-foot shop, Lost Star packs a surprising amount of variety. The shelves are lined with a blend of popular and independently published titles, from classics like Ticket to Ride and Catan to fast-paced favorites like Exploding Kittens. For those who enjoy world-building adventures, they carry roleplaying games and accessories, war games like Warhammer and Star Wars Legion, and card games including Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and Star Wars Unlimited.
More than a retail store, Lost Star serves as a community hub. The shop provides table space for players and hobbyists to gather, play, and connect. As a family-owned and operated business, they’ve built an environment that feels warm, inclusive, and personal. “We’ve always been more than just small business retail,” Andrew and Charlie say. “We’ve been family.”
Their dedication to the gaming community is what truly sets Lost Star apart. They support an active network of players and volunteers, host weekly and seasonal events, and create opportunities for people to connect

through shared experiences. Organized play encompasses both competitive and cooperative options, with a focus on maintaining good sportsmanship and a friendly atmosphere.
Some of their most memorable moments come from the relationships built in the store and through their outreach efforts. Lost Star sponsors and supports local schools, helping students explore creativity and collaboration through tabletop games. For Andrew and Charlie, those personal connections and acts of support are what make the work meaningful.
The holidays bring even more energy to the store. Lost Star comes alive with festive decorations, themed music, and special promotions like their popular holiday discount wheel. They participate in Gig Harbor Waterfront Alliance events, collect donations for the Gig Harbor Fish Food Bank, and encourage themed attire and cosplay during game nights. Year-round, they also offer a 10% discount to active military members, students with an ASB card, and volunteers.
What they love most about running Lost Star is seeing the impact their store has on people. “We put in a tremendous amount of time and effort into our business,” they say, “and that stress melts away when we hear customers find their place and people.” That sense of belonging is what drives everything they do.
Andrew and Charlie invite the community to experience the difference of shopping local. It may take a little extra effort to park, walk downtown, and step inside—but it’s worth it. At Lost Star, every game, every laugh, and every connection adds to a growing legacy of imagination and friendship throughout Gig Harbor.

THE STAR AND THE STORY OF
by STEVE RUSSO

It’s one of the most recognized images in human history: a star shining above a manger in Bethlehem. It’s been painted, sung about, and printed on countless Christmas cards. But behind the nativity scenes and pageants lies one of the most remarkable truths in all of Scripture: the Creator of the heavens used His own creation to announce His arrival.
Matthew tells us about a group of wise men from the east, learned men who studied both the stars and the sacred writings of old. They likely came from the region once ruled by Babylon, where generations earlier the prophet Daniel had served as chief among the Magi. Through him, echoes of Israel’s hope had been preserved, whispers of a coming King, a promised Messiah, and even the prophecy that “a star shall come out of Jacob.”
So when a light appeared that was unlike any they had ever seen, they recognized its meaning. This wasn’t a coincidence

or a cosmic curiosity; it was fulfillment. What Daniel had foretold, the heavens were now declaring. And they followed.
That journey would take them hundreds of miles, across deserts and danger, into the heart of Judea. They had no map, only a star that moved, stopped, and stood over the very place where the Christ child lay. The detail is easy to miss but profound in meaning: the same God who spoke light into existence in Genesis was now using that light to declare His own birth. The heavens were literally pointing to earth.
John begins his gospel not with shepherds or angels but with eternity:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

That’s the heart of Christmas, the Incarnation. God didn’t send an idea, a philosophy, or a symbolic hope. He came Himself. The infinite became an infant. The Maker of the stars entered the world beneath them.
Think about that. The hands that flung galaxies into orbit were now small enough to fit inside Mary’s palm. The same voice that thundered, “Let there be light,” was now the soft cry of a newborn. The very Author of life was breathing our air.
This is the mystery of Christmas—not sentimental nostalgia, but the unthinkable humility of God. The Word became flesh, and the heavens couldn’t stay silent about it.
And tucked into Matthew’s account is another name: Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” It’s not just poetic. It’s personal. The child in the manger wasn’t a symbol of hope; He was hope. He was God, here, among His people.
The star was more than a miracle of astronomy; it was a declaration. Psalm 19 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” That night in Bethlehem, they did precisely that, not abstractly, but personally. Some scholars believe the Star of Bethlehem may have been a rare planetary alignment, a supernova, or something beyond the realm of science altogether. But the point isn’t how it happened – it’s why.
The Magi saw that light and came to worship. They brought gold for a King, frankincense for a God, and myrrh for the One who would one day die. Every gift spoke of His purpose. They arrived as seekers of truth and left as worshipers of the Truth Himself. And in that humble house, these men who had searched the skies finally saw Immanuel—God with us!
It’s easy to read the Christmas story and view it as ancient history, but the pattern remains unchanged. God still reveals Himself to those who seek Him. He still draws outsiders in. Those Magi represent every one of us who has ever looked for meaning, who

“THE TRUE LIGHT THAT GIVES LIGHT TO EVERYONE WAS COMING INTO THE World.”

has ever followed a faint light through the dark, hoping it leads to something real. They remind us that God’s invitation extends beyond borders, beyond religion, beyond what we think we know.
And when we finally come face to face with Jesus, like those travelers, we realize the light we were following wasn’t far away after all. It was leading us home to Immanuel.
John wrote, “The true Light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” That’s the miracle of the Incarnation, not that a star appeared in the sky, but that the Light of the world stepped into human form.
The same Jesus who spoke galaxies into existence entered human time and space to rescue it. He didn’t just come to be admired. He came to redeem. He didn’t just shine from afar. He stepped into the darkness so He could bring us out of it. That’s why the Christmas story still matters, because every generation needs that light again. Every heart needs to know Immanuel, the God who is not far away but always near.
Two thousand years later, we still hang stars on trees and rooftops. Maybe we don’t think much about what they mean. But the truth remains: that star was never about astronomy. It was about an invitation.
The Magi saw it and came. The shepherds heard it and ran. Mary held it in her arms. And today, that same light still calls to hearts that are searching. Christmas isn’t just about looking back to a manger. It’s about realizing that the same God who once used a star to guide strangers still uses light to guide us – sometimes in ways we don’t expect, sometimes right where we are. Because the God who once pointed heaven to earth still points hearts to Himself.
And His name is still Immanuel. God with us!

If you’ve ever strolled along the downtown waterfront, you’ve likely paused in front of the home with the wraparound porch and harbor views that stop you in your tracks. Nestled in Millville, Gig Harbor’s original fishing village, 3414 Harborview Drive is a time capsule of craftsmanship, community, and the rhythm of harbor life.
Built in 1888, this historic residence has witnessed the evolution of Gig Harbor’s working waterfront. Although constructed by Joseph Dorotich, one of the town’s early Croatian settlers, Dorotich never lived here himself. In many ways, he was one of Gig Harbor’s first real estate developers, building the home to sell — a practice shared by contemporaries like Dr. Burnham, who helped shape Millville as we know it.
The home’s first owners were employees of the Gig Harbor Lumber Company, including George Sprague, superintendent of pile driving for the mill, followed by a local notary public. In 1909, the home was purchased by fisherman Dominic Skrivanich, whose family owned it for decades. His name became synonymous with the property; for generations, locals knew it simply as the Skrivanich house.
Two legacy fishing families have loved this home, each adding a new chapter to the Millville story. Built by fishermen’s hands from reclaimed wood and layers of old newspaper tucked between the walls, it embodies the ingenuity and grit of the harbor’s earliest days. The craftsmanship in the millwork and preserved details carries that history forward — proof that true artistry never fades.
For the past 42 years, the home has belonged to Tomi Kent Smith, who raised her family here with her faithful dog, Luna. The wraparound porch, extended under Tomi’s care, created a seamless blend of historic charm and modern comfort — though the renovation meant it no longer qualified for the state’s Historic Register. Still, it remains one of the most authentic reflections of early Gig Harbor architecture.
The neighboring lot, once used by fishermen to dry nets, sat open for decades — a patch of green where Tomi’s children played and Luna chased tennis balls. Sold in fall 2025, it now awaits a new home and another story.
Inside, 3414 Harborview Drive is just shy of 1,300 square feet, with three bedrooms, one bath, and a two-car garage — an absolute rarity in the harbor. Sold for $1.1 million in early fall 2025, it stands as a testament to its blend of history, heart, and harborfront location. Step out the front door and you’re moments from Susanne’s Bakery, Harbor Nest, and the hum of Skansie Park concerts.
To stand on this porch is to stand in the living story of Gig Harbor — built by fishermen, loved by generations, and now welcoming a new era of harbor dreamers… and Ferguson the cat, who loves Millville Pizza and large porches.
It’s an honor to share the story of 3414 Harborview Drive, a true cornerstone of Gig Harbor’s heritage, where history, heart, and harbor life intertwine.

If you haven’t reviewed your child support in a while, now may be the time to do so. For the first time in several years, the State of Washington has revamped the Economic Table used to calculate child support.
Beginning January 1st, the cap on combined household net income for determining child support has been significantly raised, from $12,000 per month to $50,000 per month. Previously, high-income earners did not have their child support calculated beyond the $12,000 income cap unless identifiable circumstances supported an increase. Even then, the amount was usually determined by agreement or a judgment call, not by a formula.
Why is this important? You will usually hear that child support intends to help the primary residential parent meet the children’s basic needs, such as “food, clothing, and shelter.” However, the old Economic Table often results in significant financial disparity between households where incomes significantly differ, particularly in instances where the child support is capped.
For example, under the old guidelines, if the higher-earner, nonprimary residential parent earns $250,000 per year while the residential parent earns $80,000 per year, child support for two children would be around $1700 per month. Under the updated support guidelines effective January 2026, that amount would increase between $900 and $1000 per month to nearly $2700 per
month. That can make quite a significant difference to the lower earner’s standard of living, and their ability to provide for the children in their household.
It is a welcome relief to those of us who have worked in this field for a long time to see the state’s Economic Table finally catching up with the rapid income growth in certain professions. Having said that, I have always been proud of my higher-earning clients who volunteered to exceed the prior cap, recognizing that supporting their co-parent’s household was in the best interests of their shared children. However, there have always been those parties (and their lawyers) who took advantage of the lower income cap by insisting the child support should be capped as well.
It may be well worth the cost of a legal consultation to see if you will benefit from the new calculations. Whether a change for you is $200 per month or $1000 per month, every penny counts in today’s economy.

As a local realtor, I walk through hundreds of homes each year, and one thing is clearer than ever: energy efficiency isn’t just a trend—it’s a major selling point. Buyers are asking smarter questions, utility bills are a bigger part of affordability conversations, and homes that demonstrate efficient features often stand out in a competitive market.
Whether you’re preparing to sell, settling into a new home, or simply looking to lower monthly costs, improving your home’s energy performance doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a breakdown of practical upgrades—from budget-friendly fixes to larger investments— that deliver real comfort and long-term value.
If you love DIY projects or are working with a tight budget this winter, there are plenty of low-cost improvements that offer a great return.
1. Seal Air Leaks
One of the easiest ways to boost efficiency is to keep heated air where it belongs. Caulking and weather stripping around windows, doors, and plumbing penetrations can noticeably reduce drafts and energy waste. It’s inexpensive, simple to tackle, and instantly improves comfort.
2. Add Insulation
Many older homes lack proper insulation—especially in attics, crawl spaces, and basements. Adding insulation helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures year-round, making your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Buyers also appreciate homes that promise lower, more predictable utility bills.
3. Install LED Lighting
ENERGY STAR–certified LED bulbs use up to 90% less energy than traditional bulbs and last far longer. Replacing bulbs throughout the home is a quick, affordable upgrade that saves money and signals attention to efficiency.
4. Use a Smart or Programmable Thermostat
Smart thermostats automatically adjust heating and cooling based on your schedule. Whether you’re at work, asleep, or away, they help eliminate wasted energy while keeping your home comfortable.
5. Unplug Electronics
Electronics often draw power even when turned off—known as “vampire energy.” Unplugging unused devices or using a power strip helps reduce this hidden waste.
If you're ready to invest a bit more, these higher-cost upgrades deliver long-term value.

1. Upgrade Windows and Doors
ENERGY STAR double-pane windows and well-sealed doors reduce heat loss, improve comfort, and enhance resale appeal.
2. Replace Appliances and HVAC Systems
Upgrading aging appliances or HVAC systems to ENERGY STAR models cuts energy use and appeals to today’s efficiency-minded buyers.
3. Improve Water Heating
Efficient or tankless water heaters reduce energy consumption while still providing reliable hot water.
4. Install Solar Panels
Solar panels can significantly reduce—or even eliminate—reliance on the grid, offering long-term savings and strong buyer appeal.
In short, energy efficiency boosts comfort, lowers bills, and makes your home more marketable—now and in the future.
We love working and representing clients through the winter! Winter is a great time to meet and discuss a plan with your trusted real estate adviser.
We always suggest interviewing more than one REALTOR, and we hope to be on your list.
We look forward to seeing you around town! key2see team

Let’s be honest—New Year’s resolutions come with a lot of pressure. The word itself feels heavy, like something you have to fix. But what if January wasn’t about overhauling your life, and instead about infusing it with more of what lights you up?
Enter the January Joy List—a refreshing twist on the typical resolution. Instead of promising to eat less, do more, or finally tackle that inbox, try asking: What brings me joy? What makes me feel alive, curious, or calm?
Your list can be as simple or quirky as you want. Think:
• Rewatching your favorite childhood movie
• Taking a slow walk without your phone
• Fresh sheets and a good book
• Calling a friend just to laugh

This isn’t about productivity—it’s about presence. And by filling January with little sparks of joy, you may find more motivation and clarity than any resolution could ever offer.
Here’s the beauty: your list doesn’t have to be long, and it definitely doesn’t have to be impressive. It just has to be you. Post it on your fridge. Scribble it in a notebook. Or keep it private and sacred.
The New Year doesn’t have to be a sprint toward self-improvement. Sometimes, the best way to begin again is by remembering what makes life sweet in the first place.
This January, skip the pressure. Start with joy.

YOUR HEALTH HAS A TELL

MEDICARE: OCTOBER 15 - DECEMBER 7
INDIVIDUAL: NOVEMBER 1 - JANUARY 15

It may come as a surprise, but your mouth can reveal far more than cavities and plaque buildup. Dentists are often the first health professionals to spot signs of systemic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and even cancer. During routine checkups, your dentist may notice the early warning signs of more significant issues.
One of the most common conditions dentists help identify is diabetes. Symptoms such as persistent dry mouth, gum inflammation, slow-healing sores, or frequent infections can signal blood sugar irregularities. Since these signs appear in the mouth before a patient may experience other symptoms, dentists often refer patients for testing, potentially allowing for the early detection of diabetes.
Your gums do more than anchor your teeth—they can mirror your cardiovascular health. Gum disease (periodontitis) is linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Dentists trained to recognize chronic inflammation, receding gums, or loose teeth may alert patients to get their heart checked. The mouth is part of the body’s vascular system, after all, and inflammation in one area can signal inflammation elsewhere.
Conditions such as lupus, Crohn’s disease, or Sjögren’s syndrome often first appear in the mouth. Dentists may observe symptoms like severe dry mouth, ulcers, or a red, inflamed tongue that doesn’t respond to typical treatment. By identifying these signs early, dental professionals can prompt further testing and guide patients toward a diagnosis that might have otherwise been delayed for years.
Dentists are trained to check for oral cancers during routine exams, looking at the tongue, cheeks, gums, and throat. However, they can also identify signs that may indicate other types of cancer. Unusual bleeding, lumps, discoloration, or sores that don’t heal may be indicative of something more serious. Some systemic cancers can also suppress the immune system, making the mouth more susceptible to infection.
Because dental visits are more frequent for many people than doctor visits, dentists are in a unique position to identify systemic issues early. When oral signs are identified and linked to broader concerns, patients can initiate treatment or monitoring sooner. This proactive approach not only improves outcomes but can sometimes save lives.
Dentists regularly take X-rays of the jawbone to assess oral health. But a shrinking or thinning jawbone can also indicate early signs of osteoporosis. Since this condition often goes undiagnosed until

Good sleep is your secret beauty weapon, and winter is the season to lean into it. Try this nightly routine to improve sleep quality, reduce stress, and wake up feeling more refreshed and radiant.
Routine:
• 5 minutes of light stretching or foam rolling
• Sip on chamomile or lavender tea
• Rub a calming essential oil (like lavender or cedarwood) on wrists and temples
• Power down devices 30 minutes before bed
• Write down one thing you’re grateful for
This mindful wind-down supports hormonal balance, helps your skin regenerate, and sets the stage for deeper, more restful sleep.

a fracture occurs, a dentist’s observation may be a critical first step in prevention.
Grinding, jaw clenching, and mouth sores can all be physical manifestations of stress or anxiety. Dentists can often detect these patterns and open the door for a broader conversation about mental health, something patients may not even realize is affecting them. In some cases, dentists can recommend bite guards or refer patients to a mental health professional for further support.
Dentists can also play a role in identifying sleep apnea, especially when examining the structure of the jaw, palate, and throat. Symptoms like a scalloped tongue or teeth worn down from grinding may indicate interrupted sleep. Dentists trained in sleep medicine often collaborate with sleep specialists to arrange for further testing and even customfit oral appliances that help manage the condition.
Pregnant women experience hormonal fluctuations that can impact their gum health. Dentists can identify pregnancy-related gingivitis, which may be linked to preterm birth or low birth weight if untreated. This is why it’s crucial for expecting mothers to maintain regular dental visits and hygiene routines.
When the immune system is under significant strain, the mouth often shows it first. Persistent thrush, unusual spots on the tongue, or sudden gum problems can signal deeper health concerns. Dentists trained to recognize these signs help connect patients with physicians for appropriate testing.
Dry mouth, tissue overgrowth, discoloration, and even mouth ulcers can be side effects of prescription drugs. Dentists are often the first to notice these effects and can adjust care or consult with the patient’s physician to consider alternatives.
Today’s best dental practices take an integrated approach, collaborating with general physicians, endocrinologists, cardiologists, and other specialists. With patient permission, dentists can share observations that might be crucial for broader medical decisions.
The next time you’re in the dental chair, remember—your dentist is doing more than cleaning your teeth. They’re performing a fullbody health check, watching for subtle changes that could indicate something far beyond your smile. When it comes to whole-body wellness, oral health is anything but separate.
BECAUSE DENTAL VISITS ARE MORE FREQUENT FOR MANY PEOPLE THAN DOCTOR VISITS, DENTISTS ARE IN A UNIQUE POSITION TO IDENTIFY SYSTEMIC ISSUES EARLY.

Colder months call for a cozy reset—inside and out. Begin your day with warm lemon water to support your immune system and digestive health. Swap your summer skincare for richer creams with ceramides and hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture. Boost your meals with seasonal produce like sweet potatoes, kale, and citrus for a dose of vitamins A and C. Add gentle movement, such as indoor yoga or winter walks, to stay active, and don’t underestimate the power of sleep—winter is the perfect time to rest, repair, and realign your routines.

Combat winter dryness with a weekly at-home hydrating face mask that soothes and replenishes your skin. This simple threeingredient recipe helps calm irritation, plump the skin, and restore that dewy look we all crave this time of year.
Ingredients:
• 1 tablespoon plain Greek yogurt
• 1 teaspoon honey
• ½ teaspoon olive oil
Instructions:
Mix all the ingredients to form a smooth paste. Apply to clean skin and leave on for 10–15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Follow with your favorite moisturizer.
Do this once a week to give your skin a soft, supple winter glow— without leaving the house.

Step inside Serenity Spa, and the world slows down. The air feels lighter, the light softer, and suddenly you remember what calm actually feels like. In a region filled with spas, Serenity stands apart for its seamless blend of advanced skincare, massage, and infrared wellness experiences. Founded by Megan Douglas, the spa is devoted to wellness, artistry, and self-care that restores balance inside and out.
The story began with a spark, a single comment that changed everything. “One of my clients mentioned her husband was developing a new building in downtown Tacoma and joked that it would make a great spa,” Megan recalls. “Something in me just lit up. I had no idea how, but I knew I had to make it happen.” That moment led her from hand-drawn sketches on her dining room table to opening the doors of her first spa in Tacoma’s Theater District in 2008.
From that original location, the spa has thoughtfully expanded into three unique spaces, each close to Megan’s heart. The flagship spa still anchors the Theater District, while University Place—where she and her husband have raised their family—has become an extension of home, built with the same care and comfort she values most. Gig Harbor was a dream years in the making; its charm and coastal calm made it the perfect next chapter, a true getaway just across the bridge.
Across all three locations, the team stays true to its purpose of nurturing calm, comfort, and connection. “From the moment they step through our doors, we want them to feel a shift, like they’ve entered a space designed entirely for their wellbeing,” Megan says.
It’s that intention that makes its massage and wellness services so exceptional. Their signature Northwest Zen Retreat is more than a treatment; it’s an experience inspired by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Guests begin with a coffee scrub made from locally roasted Campfire Coffee beans, followed by a therapeutic massage infused with evergreen and citrus oils. The journey ends with a Pure Forest Facial using Eminence Organic Skin Care, a blend that refreshes the skin and leaves guests feeling restored.
New to the spa’s offerings is an advanced facial featuring Exosomes with microneedling by Osmosis, a treatment Megan describes as “the next generation of skin rejuvenation.” Exosomes, she explains, are “powerful, naturally occurring cell communicators that stimulate collagen, repair damage, and restore radiance from within.” It’s a service that captures what the spa does best, combining advanced skincare with a sense of calm and purpose.
The spa’s care extends beyond its walls, reaching into the communities that have shaped its success. Each year, they contribute to local charity events and school fundraisers, and they provide full healthcare benefits for their employees. “Those who nurture others deserve to be nurtured themselves,” Megan shares. “Supporting our team isn’t just a benefit, it’s part of our mission.”
Megan’s dedication to wellness also inspired her to create Pyürest, a luxury body care line designed for both the treatment room and for bringing the spa experience home. Crafted from therapeutic minerals, detoxifying clays, and pure essential oils, each product transforms everyday moments into opportunities for grounding, renewal, and self-connection. “For me, Pyürest is about intention,” she says. “It’s skincare that supports well-being from the outside in.”
Every experience at Serenity Spa is created to help guests feel renewed, reconnected, and ready to carry that calm into their everyday lives. “Every time I walk into one of my spas, I still feel the same mix of awe and gratitude I did on that first day,” Megan reflects. “What began as a dream in my twenties became my life’s work, and I’m endlessly thankful to share that peace with others.”
This holiday season, Serenity Spa invites guests to share the gift of wellness. Purchase a $100 gift card and receive a $20 bonus card, a perfect reason to give and receive a little serenity.
The spa continues to grow with the same purpose it began, guided by care, connection, and well-being.

When confidence and care meet, true radiance follows
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM

The first thing you notice isn’t her skin, though it glows. It’s the way she carries herself— shoulders relaxed, a calm smile, the kind of presence that makes a room feel lighter. Ask her her secret and she won’t name a product or a new trend. She’ll tell you it’s balance, sleep, hydration, movement, laughter, and yes, the occasional treatment from someone who understands her story.
This is the shift happening in beauty today. It’s less about covering up and more about uncovering. Instead of chasing perfection, people are searching for something deeper: a sense of well-being that radiates outward. Local experts are seeing it every day. Clients come in looking for skin care, a fresh cut, or nutrition guidance, but what they’re really seeking is confidence.
“When people feel good about who they are, it changes everything,” says one esthetician. “The glow that follows is authentic—and that’s what others notice.” It’s not the flawless complexion or the perfectly styled hair that makes someone beautiful. It’s the spark of self-assurance that can’t be bottled or faked.
In studios and salons, wellness is becoming the new luxury. A facial might include guided breathing to release stress. A massage could be paired with nutrition advice. A hair appointment becomes a conversation about lifestyle and self-expression. These moments go beyond appearance—they’re about giving people the tools to feel whole.
Morning begins with water and quiet movement. Afternoon offers a pause for calm—whether in a treatment room or a ten-minute walk. Evening closes with nourishment and rest. The rhythm is simple, but the results are profound: a glow that no single product can create.
The professionals leading this movement aren’t interested in cookie-cutter answers. They listen closely, crafting personalized approaches that honor each client’s individuality. One stylist explains, “A haircut is never just a haircut. It’s about how you want to show up in the world.” Another shares how education is key: showing clients how to care for their skin or hair at home so they feel empowered long after they leave the chair.
Nutrition coaches are also part of the conversation. They remind us that what we put into our bodies shapes how we look and feel. Energy, clarity, glowing skin—these begin with rest, hydration, and food choices. It’s not about strict rules but about building routines that are both nourishing and realistic.

What makes this movement even more powerful is its inclusivity. Beauty is no longer tied to a single image, a specific size, or a particular age. Local professionals are celebrating uniqueness, encouraging clients to embrace what makes them different.
“The most beautiful thing is when someone walks out feeling more like themselves, not less,” says one local voice. That sentiment is reshaping the industry. Instead of offering transformations that disguise, professionals are creating experiences that reveal.
For some, that means bold hair color that matches a personality they’ve long wanted to express. For others, it might be restorative skin treatments that highlight vitality without erasing character. And for many, it’s simply about carving out time for a massage, facial, or class that reminds them how good it feels to slow down. Each expression of beauty looks different—and that’s the point.
The shift has also opened the door for new collaborations across the industry. Salons are partnering with wellness studios. Estheticians work alongside nutritionists. Even medical spas are weaving mindfulness into their offerings. These partnerships send a clear message: beauty

and health aren’t separate—they’re layered, interconnected, and stronger together.
Looking ahead, the future of beauty is less about products on a shelf and more about the people behind the chair or treatment table. It’s about care, compassion, and wisdom. From medical spas to wellness studios, from stylists to nutritionists, the focus is shifting toward experiences that blend health and beauty, body and mind.
And it’s a future where clients themselves play a bigger role. Professionals provide the tools, but the confidence comes from within. When someone invests in themselves—through small habits, thoughtful choices, and expert support—they shine.
Because when people feel truly seen, supported, and encouraged, they radiate a beauty no trend can ever match. That light is stronger, more lasting, and more compelling than any passing fashion.
True beauty isn’t about chasing what’s next. It’s about feeling whole today, and carrying that confidence into tomorrow.

A Gig Harbor sanctuary where beauty and energy flow in harmony

For Brooke Rodriguez, A Touch of Meraki has always been her heart and soul project. What began as a collection of passions—hairdressing, sound healing, and sacred crafting—evolved into a unified vision: a space where beauty and energy could coexist. That dream became A Touch of Meraki, a sanctuary where clients and practitioners alike can reconnect with themselves and the world around them.
“The meaning of Meraki is woven into everything we do,” Brooke shares. “It’s the acknowledgment that anything we touch carries a bit of our own energy, that our love, intention, and essence flow through our work.” Inside this peaceful space, every detail reflects that philosophy. From the hair salon to the Gather Space to the retail boutique filled with crystals, candles, and sacred tools, each element has been crafted or chosen to inspire connection, reflection, and renewal.
A Touch of Meraki isn’t just a salon or healing studio. It’s a collective. Brooke leases her studios to local practitioners, creating a supportive environment where facilitators can share their gifts without barriers. Reiki healers, sound therapists, and wellness guides each bring their unique expression of Meraki to the space, creating a rich tapestry of offerings for the community. “It’s been incredible to watch this dream expand into a community where everyone’s gifts can thrive,” Brooke says.
The range of services offered reflects Brooke’s belief that wellness begins within. Shamanic Reiki, Biofield Tuning, and Opus Sound Bed Meditations invite guests to slow down, listen, and reconnect. Each is a different way to access personal empowerment and balance, helping clients return to their natural rhythm. Even traditional salon services are elevated with this same intention. Head Spa treatments, mindful haircare, and beauty rituals are infused with presence and purpose, a reminder that self-care can be sacred.
“Beauty is an act of sacred self-care,” Brooke explains. “It’s not vanity, but reverence. When we approach self-care with intention, even something as simple as a haircut or scalp treatment becomes a sacred act of living in alignment with one’s true self.”
At the center of A Touch of Meraki is the Gather Space, a serene room dedicated to community workshops and healing circles. It serves as both a sanctuary and a stage for connection, hosting events like Sacred Sisterhood Circles, sound journeys, breathwork,

and creative workshops. Each gathering encourages participants to open their hearts and experience the transformative power of shared energy.
The retail area extends that energy into daily life. Many of the shop’s offerings—ritual candles, smudge sticks, and crystal bundles—are handcrafted by Brooke herself. Others are sourced from local, women-owned businesses that share her values of integrity and intention. Each item carries a story and a purpose, designed to help customers continue their wellness practices at home.
Beyond the walls of her Gig Harbor studio, Brooke envisions expanding A Touch of Meraki into a nature-based retreat center. Her goal is to create a sanctuary surrounded by trees and water, where guests can rest, learn, and reconnect through retreats and healing experiences. The dream is to blend modern comfort with natural beauty, a physical embodiment of sacred balance.
Community is the foundation of everything Brooke has built. “This space was never meant to be just a salon or healing studio. It was created as a home for belonging, collaboration, and shared growth,” Brooke says. “Every person who walks through our doors becomes part of a larger tapestry of healing and shared purpose.”
What Brooke has built is more than a business; it’s a living embodiment of Meraki itself, love poured into every detail and intention woven through every experience. Each appointment, circle, and handcrafted item carries that same energy, reminding everyone who visits that healing and beauty are most powerful when they come from the heart. 3612–3614–3616

Gig Harbor’s historic netsheds are one of the community’s most recognizable features, lining the waterfront with structures that reflect the town’s maritime heritage. Built by local fishermen in the early 1900s, these simple wooden buildings were once used to store nets and gear. Today, they remain an iconic part of the harbor’s identity. Take a quiet walk along the shoreline and pause to appreciate how these preserved netsheds connect modern Gig Harbor to its fishing roots, especially on calm winter days when the waterfront feels still and reflective.

Join the community for the 11th Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser, supporting hunger-relief efforts in Gig Harbor. Altrusa of Gig Harbor produces the event, bringing together corporate sponsors, local artisans and restaurants, and caring neighbors united around one cause.
Guests are invited to purchase a handmade bowl from local potters and woodworkers and enjoy a simple soup-and-bread meal. Each bowl serves as a reminder that some in our community still struggle with empty bowls—and together, we can help fill them.
Attendees can look forward to a variety of soups prepared by local restaurants. “We hope to see an even greater turnout this year, as the need has grown exponentially over the last year. Empty Bowls is a tremendous opportunity for everyone to turn out in support of relieving food insecurity in our community,” says Altrusa President Susan Green, adding that each bowl offers “a simple meal of soup and bread to remind us of how fortunate we are and how some right here in our community are not.”
Bowls start at $15, and each purchase includes up to two servings of soup with fresh bread. For more details or to learn how to contribute, visit AltrusaGigHarbor.org or email altrusapresidentgigharbor@gmail.com.
