With Heart: Find a Financial Advisor Who Shares Your Values

hen it comes to managing your money, there’s more to consider than just the bottom line. For many people, investing isn’t only about building wealth or reaching goals — it’s about making sure their dollars support charitable causes and principles that are in line with their closely held values.

Whether your focus is on protecting the planet, aligning with your faith or giving back to your community, a financial advisor who understands your values can help you build a portfolio that reflects what matters to you. Here’s how to help find a good fit.

Know What You Stand For

Before you start searching for a financial advisor, take a moment to reflect on your own values. Are you passionate about sustainability? Do you want your investments to avoid companies that conflict with your faith? Is charitable giving a big part of your life and something you want to incorporate into your financial strategy?

Make a list of your top priorities. Understanding what drives you can help make it easier to find a financial advisor who shares and respects your vision.

Do Your Homework

Once you’ve clarified your goals, start looking for financial advisors who focus on valuesbased investing. Terms like “socially responsible investing” (SRI), “faith-based investing,” “impact investing,” or “ESG” (which stands for environmental, social, and governance) are good keywords to use during your search.

Browse financial advisor websites and check their credentials. Some may highlight their experience with sustainable funds or philanthropic planning. Look for signs that they’re comfortable helping clients invest with a conscience.

Ask the Right Questions

After narrowing your list, schedule a few introductory discussions, which can be done in person or remotely, depending on your preference. These chats are your chance to learn more about how the financial advisor works and whether they’ll be a good fit.

Ask about their investment approach:

•Do they offer portfolios with a focus on ESG or faith-based filters?

• Have they worked with clients who have similar values to yours?

• How do they assess charitable giving strategies or donor-advised funds?

• Do they know the complex tax rules associated with charitable giving?

Listen closely to the questions they ask of you. Are they truly interested in what matters to you?

Do they understand your values and priorities?

Also, consider their communication style. Will they keep you updated regularly? Are they open to collaboration when you want to adjust your plan?

Trust Your Instincts

Choosing a financial advisor is a personal decision. Beyond their professional qualifications, you want someone who listens well and respects your goals. Don’t hesitate to meet with several financial advisors before making your choice. The right person will make you feel understood and supported, both financially and personally.

Ideally, you and your financial advisor will forge a long-term relationship that spans the changes and milestones in your life. As the details of your financial strategy may change, you'll still want to hold onto your values in your investments.

Investing With Purpose

Whether you’re hoping to reduce your carbon footprint, stay true to your faith or make the world a better place through giving, you don’t have to choose between your values and your financial future. Many good financial advisors can help you do both.

Taking the time to find someone who shares your vision can help you feel confident that your investment strategy can align with your personal beliefs.

Celebrating local women in business who bring confidence, beauty, and community spirit to Sandpoint, this Q&A features Nancy Andrews of Signature Aesthetics and Sarah Merli of StyleBar Beauty Bar as they reflect on their shared path.

Q.You both play an inspiring role in shaping how beauty and confidence are defined here in Sandpoint. What does it mean to share this journey as local women business owners who’ve supported each other over the years?

Nancy

A. Sharing this journey with Sarah has been incredibly meaningful. We both understand the real work, sacrifice, and resilience it takes to run a business and overcome obstacles along the way. Supporting each other over the years has made the experience richer and more rewarding. Sandpoint is a special community, and growing side by side while lifting up other women in business has truly been one of the greatest blessings of this journey.

Sarah

A. Sharing this journey as local women business owners has been incredibly meaningful. StyleBar Beauty Bar and Signature Aesthetics have always had the same mission—helping people feel their best inside and out. Over the years, we’ve leaned on each other for support, encouragement, and collaboration, and that sense of community has really shaped us. Sandpoint has such a special small-town spirit, and growing side by side while cheering each other on has been truly rewarding. It’s a reminder that success is even better when it’s shared.

Q.The holiday season is all about connection and giving back. How do each of your businesses contribute to that sense of joy and community in Sandpoint?

Nancy A. At Signature Aesthetics, we focus on making every client feel valued, cared for, and completely welcomed the moment they walk in. The holidays give us a chance to slow down, connect, and add moments of kindness and gratitude to each visit. Our collaboration with StyleBar for holiday giveaways brings even more joy to the community, and it feels wonderful to create something uplifting for the people who support us all year.

Sarah A. At StyleBar, we focus on making everyone feel special, loved, and confident — inside and out. The holidays are our favorite time to show our clients appreciation, so we give each of them a little thank-you gift that includes travel-size versions of the amazing products we carry. This year, we’re also collaborating with Signature Aesthetics on holiday giveaways, making it even more exciting to spread joy and gratitude throughout the community. Sharing that extra bit of care and celebration is what the season’s all about.

Q.Running successful beauty businesses requires both creativity and leadership. How have you inspired or learned from one another as entrepreneurs?

Nancy A. Sarah inspires me with her willingness to keep learning, no matter how long or challenging the day has been. We exchange ideas, talk through obstacles, and motivate each other to keep moving forward. That creative energy and mutual honesty has helped both of us grow as leaders. Having someone who understands the ups and downs of entrepreneurship has been a constant source of support.

Sarah

A. Running a beauty business takes both creativity and leadership, and one of the best parts of our journey has been learning from each other. We inspire one another by sharing ideas, celebrating successes, and offering honest feedback. Having a trusted partner to exchange ideas with has helped us grow as entrepreneurs and strengthened our creativity and our approach to serving clients.

Q.In a small town where relationships matter, how do collaboration and mutual support between women-owned businesses strengthen Sandpoint’s business community?

Nancy

A. In Sandpoint, relationships are everything. Mutual support between women-owned businesses helps build a strong community rooted in trust, loyalty, and respect. When we collaborate, we are not only helping our own businesses grow but also strengthening the community as a whole. The support we give one another creates an environment where people feel valued and where small businesses can truly thrive.

Sarah

A. Strong relationships matter here. Collaboration between womenowned businesses strengthens the community by sharing support, knowledge, and opportunities. We cheer each other on, help our businesses thrive, and make Sandpoint a place where both businesses and residents feel valued.

Q.What message would you share with other women who dream of starting a business in Sandpoint?

Nancy

A. My message is simple. Go for it and never give up. You will fall and face challenges, but you will get back up every time. If life gives you a black eye, put a little makeup on it and keep going. With resilience, heart, and the support of a community like Sandpoint, you can build something meaningful and fulfilling.

Sarah

A. Anything is achievable if you don’t give up, even in your most challenging times. There will be hard moments and people who let you down, but if you keep pushing forward, you can make your dreams a reality. In a supportive community like Sandpoint, with people cheering each other on, it’s even easier to grow your business and reach your goals.

Nancy Sarah

Q.What do you admire most about Sarah as a businesswoman and community leader?

A. What I admire most about Sarah is her resilience and her drive. Both of us know what it takes to run a business, push through obstacles, and stay focused on serving people well. She shows up every day with determination, even on the hard days, and she continues to work and learn no matter how tired she is. That level of commitment says everything about her character, both as a leader and as a woman in business.

Q.How do you see your missions aligning?

A. StyleBar and Signature Aesthetics have always shared the same heartbeat: making every person who walks through our doors feel seen, cared for, and valued. We both believe in giving clients our full attention, making them feel like the only person in the room. That mindset creates a natural alignment between our missions, making collaboration feel effortless. We want people to leave looking and feeling their best, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Q.What does collaboration look like for the two of you in a small, supportive community like Sandpoint?

A. Collaboration with Sarah has always been grounded in mutual respect and loyalty. In a community like Sandpoint, relationships matter, and Sarah understands that better than anyone. She lifts others up, celebrates their wins, and shows absolute loyalty to the people she works with. When we collaborate, we contribute to something bigger than our individual businesses. We are supporting a community that has supported us.

Q.What is one thing you’ve learned from watching Sarah grow StyleBar into such a strong brand?

A. One of the biggest things I’ve learned from Sarah is the power of consistency and heart. She built StyleBar through steady dedication, showing up every single day with the same passion she had when she started. She stays true to who she is, treats people with kindness, and leads with grace. Watching her navigate challenges while still prioritizing her clients and her team has been inspiring.

Q.If you could design the perfect self-care day for your clients during the holidays, what would that look like?

A. A perfect self-care day during the holidays would start with the courage to slow down and invest in yourself. A day that blends StyleBar’s beauty expertise with Signature’s rejuvenating treatments would give clients a chance to relax, refresh, and walk out feeling renewed inside and out. It would be a day that reminds them they deserve care, too.

Q.You’ve seen Signature Aesthetics evolve into one of Sandpoint’s most trusted medical spas. What do you admire most about Nancy as a businesswoman and community leader?

A. What I admire most about Nancy is her passion, dedication, and genuine care for her clients and our community. She’s built Signature Aesthetics into a trusted medical spa through hard work, creativity, and a commitment to excellence. Collaborating with her has been both motivating and rewarding.

Q.Both your businesses focus on helping people look and feel their best—how do you see your missions aligning?

A. Nancy and I both started our businesses with multiple locations between Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene, often passing each other on the way home after a long day. It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch her evolve and grow. We’ve shared ideas for years, have a common clientele, and that shared support has strengthened both of our businesses.

Q.What does collaboration look like for you two, especially in a small, supportive community like Sandpoint?

A. Both StyleBar and Signature Aesthetics focus on helping clients look and feel their best, which makes working together feel effortless. Since we share many of the same clients, it’s natural for us to exchange ideas, support each other’s businesses, and celebrate our wins. At the end of the day, we both want our clients to feel confident and cared for, and that makes our partnership incredibly rewarding.

Q.What’s one thing you’ve learned from watching Nancy grow Signature Aesthetics into such a strong brand?

A. One thing I’ve learned from Nancy is the power of dedication and staying true to your values. She’s built Signature Aesthetics into a strong, trusted brand while remaining grounded in her faith and commitment to family. Watching her balance both has been truly inspiring.

Q.If you could design the perfect self-care day with Nancy for your clients, what would that look like during the holidays?

A. It’s tough to narrow it down to one perfect day for Nancy and me, but during the holidays, I always suggest making time for both StyleBar and Signature Aesthetics. It’s truly worth it!

SANDPOINT Supporting Local in

SEASONAL SHOPS, STAYS, ACTIVITIES, AND DINING OPTIONS WORTH VISITING by LIKE MEDIA TEAM

Local businesses help define the holiday season in Sandpoint. It is a time when shopping, dining, and winter activities all pick up, and a chance to support the places that serve the community year-round. The following highlights offer practical ideas for gift shopping, hosting family, enjoying winter activities, and spending time in local restaurants and gathering spots that stay active throughout the season.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING STOPS

Holiday shopping in Sandpoint centers on the businesses that stay active throughout the season. Each one offers something different, and together they make it easy to find gifts without leaving the community.

Aspen & Stone is a dependable stop for home décor, accessories, and lifestyle pieces that lean toward modern Northwest design. Their selection works well for anyone who appreciates clean lines, warm textures, or a home that feels intentionally put together. It is a simple place to find a thoughtful gift without overthinking the process.

The Cedar Street Bridge Public Market brings a very different experience, with small vendors, local makers, and a steady flow of families and visitors throughout the season. It remains a natural place to browse. There is no pressure to shop quickly, and the variety lets you pick up everything from practical items to unexpected finds that fit perfectly under a tree. The bridge is also a consistent place for seasonal activity, decorations, and community energy.

Inside the bridge, Creations remains one of Sandpoint’s most recognizable nonprofit art spaces. It is known for handson creativity, kid-friendly projects, and a welcoming atmosphere for families. If you are looking for a meaningful gift, items made through community programs carry a different kind of value. For parents and grandparents, a creative holiday outing at Creations often becomes part of the season itself.

Carousel Emporium adds a distinct texture to local shopping with antiques, vintage items, décor, and collectibles. It is the type of store where browsing is part of the fun. The inventory rotates often, which keeps the shopping experience fresh, and the mix of styles and eras makes it easy to find something with personality. People looking for standout décor or a one-of-a-kind holiday gift usually start here.

Grace & Joy provides a boutique space with apparel, accessories, and curated seasonal goods. The shop focuses on approachable style, with items that are easy to pair, gift, and wear year-round. If you want something polished and simple to wrap, this is one of the most reliable stops in town.

Burl Wood Dreams speaks to the side of Sandpoint that appreciates craftsmanship. Their pieces are handcrafted from Northwest burlwood, and each is shaped by the wood's natural lines. Bowls, tables, ornaments, and decorative pieces offer options for someone who prefers gifts with character and longevity. The work is visually striking and feels tied to the region, which makes it a meaningful stop during the holiday season.

Sandpoint Furniture remains a staple for both large and small home upgrades. While many people think of furniture stores for major purchases, the showroom also carries décor and smaller items that make strong gifts for anyone setting up a new space or improving a room for the season. For those hosting a family, it is also a helpful place to pick up the pieces needed to prepare a home before gatherings begin.

Wine4U is owned by Beth Giacomo, who focuses on making wine shopping approachable for every customer. The shop carries a dependable mix of varietals at accessible price points, and Beth’s guidance helps people choose bottles for holiday meals, gifts, and gatherings with confidence. Her straightforward style and product knowledge create a simple, relaxed experience that works well for both new wine drinkers and those who know exactly what they like.

WINTER STAYS

Sandpoint offers several lodging options that fit well into the holiday season, whether you are hosting visitors or planning your own winter reset. Each brings something different to the experience.

Talus Rock Retreat offers a quiet setting without feeling far removed from town activities. The property is known for its comfortable rooms, welcoming layout, and peaceful surroundings. Visitors often choose it when they want privacy paired with easy access to local shops and restaurants. During the holiday season, it provides a calm, comfortable place for guests to settle in and relax.

Western Pleasure Guest Ranch provides a more rural setting with a strong sense of traditional North Idaho hospitality. Guests come for the log lodge, the open grounds, and the winter activities that make the ranch feel like a getaway. Sleigh rides, snow-covered views, and a slower pace attract visitors seeking a classic seasonal experience. It is a dependable choice for those who enjoy a cabin-like atmosphere and time spent outdoors.

Humbird at Schweitzer is designed for guests who want immediate access to the mountain and the surrounding winter activities. The lodging sits slope side with modern design, comfortable common spaces, and proximity to dining and shops in the village. For skiers, snowboarders, and families who plan to spend most of their time on the mountain, Humbird remains one of the most convenient options during the holiday season.

SEASONAL THINGS TO DO

Seasonal activity in Sandpoint centers on winter recreation, community events, and places that stay consistently active throughout the holidays.

Schweitzer continues to anchor winter recreation with skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and village events. The mountain stays steady throughout the season, with visitors, locals, and families taking advantage of the long winter. It is an easy day trip and offers activities for all levels.

The Panida Theater adds a cultural element with films, performances, and community programming. December often brings classic movies or themed events that draw residents looking for a familiar local outing. The historic space provides continuity, and the schedule tends to complement the winter pace in Sandpoint.

Cedar Street Bridge remains a hub for holiday foot traffic. It brings together shopping, small vendors, seasonal décor, and an ongoing sense of activity. Families, visitors, and residents naturally move through the space during December, making it a consistent gathering place.

Downtown Sandpoint adds energy to the season with holiday lights and community traditions. People come for evening walks, lastminute shopping, and simple outings with friends and family.

FOOD AND DRINKS FOR THE SEASON

Food and drink play a significant role in winter routines, from casual meals to holiday gatherings. Sandpoint offers several local spots that stay active throughout the season.

MickDuff’s Brewing Company is a year-round favorite known for handcrafted beer and consistent pub-style meals. It is an easy place to meet up with friends, take a break from shopping, or unwind after a day on the mountain.

Sweet Lou’s is a dependable choice for families and groups who want a comfortable sit-down meal with straightforward menu options. The restaurant stays steady throughout the season and works well for gatherings and dinners that need plenty of seating.

Evans Brothers Coffee continues to anchor local coffee culture with its roastery and café. It's an ideal stop for warm drinks, quick meetings, or catching up with friends. The space stays active through the holidays, drawing residents and visitors alike.

113 Main provides a relaxed dining experience with consistent service and a menu that appeals to a variety of tastes. It works well for holiday weekends, evenings out, or casual meals with friends.

219 Lounge offers a classic local atmosphere for cocktails and evening gatherings. It is well known among residents and stays busy as people come downtown for events and seasonal outings. For those looking to finish the night in a familiar setting, it remains a reliable choice.

The holiday season brings more movement, more gatherings, and more reasons to support the businesses that keep Sandpoint strong year-round. Shopping local, choosing local lodging, enjoying local food, and participating in community activities all contribute to a season that celebrates what people value about this town. Each business included here plays a role in that experience and continues to serve the community in meaningful ways.

HOLIDAYS HOLIDAYS handmade for the

Simple DIY gifts that are thoughtful, useful, and easy to create

The holiday season is about giving, but not every gift has to come from a store shelf. Some of the most memorable presents are the ones made by hand, using simple ingredients from your kitchen or garden. DIY gifts don’t just save a trip to the mall — they show thought, creativity, and care. This December, turn your home into a workshop with straightforward, practical, and fun-to-make projects.

CULINARY

GIFTS WITH LOCAL FLAVOR

Food is always a welcome gift, especially when it carries the flavor of home. Herb-infused olive oils are impressive but straightforward: tuck rosemary, thyme, or chili peppers into decorative bottles, then pour in good-quality olive oil. Add a handwritten tag with serving ideas — like drizzling over roasted vegetables or bread.

Spice blends and flavored salts are another easy option. Mix smoked paprika, garlic powder, and sea salt for a BBQ rub, or combine citrus zest with coarse salt for a bright finishing touch. Package them in small jars or tins, label them clearly, and you’ve got ready-to-give pantry staples.

For a sweet treat, try a homemade hot cocoa mix layered in jars with marshmallows on top. Pair it with a festive mug, and you’ve created a gift that feels both cozy and practical.

NATURAL BODY CARE

Homemade body care products are surprisingly simple and make thoughtful gifts. Sugar scrubs are a favorite — combine one cup of sugar with half a cup of coconut oil, then add a few drops of essential oil. Peppermint is fresh and seasonal, while lavender or vanilla feels calming and timeless.

For a richer option, try beef tallow body butter. Rendered tallow (widely available from local farms or butchers) is full of nutrients and can be whipped with olive or jojoba oil until creamy. A few drops of essential oil add fragrance. Packaged in small jars or tins, it’s a unique gift that feels luxurious without chemicals or additives.

Bath salts are another quick win. Mix coarse salt with dried herbs or citrus peels, then package in glass jars. Add directions — as simple as, “Add ½ cup to warm bathwater” — and you’ve created a spa-like experience from everyday ingredients.

CRAFTS FROM THE GARDEN AND YARD

The yard and garden can be a gold mine for creative gifts. Evergreen wreaths, garlands, or swags can be made from cut branches and tied with twine or ribbon. Small hand-tied bundles make great hostess gifts.

Pressed-flower bookmarks or framed art are perfect for those who saved blooms from summer. Herbs like lavender or rosemary can be dried and sewn into small sachets for drawers and closets. Even simple pinecone fire starters — dipped in wax and tied in bundles — are practical gifts for friends with fireplaces.

WHY HANDMADE WORKS

DIY gifts aren’t about being elaborate or “Pinterest perfect.” They’re about usefulness and intention. A jar of infused oil, a homemade scrub, or a hand-tied wreath shows you spent time creating something personal. In a season often filled with excess, handmade gifts stand out for their simplicity and sincerity.

CHILDREN CALL BHT HOME

They came to Bonner Homeless Transitions, many escaping domestic violence. Now the kids are doing homework at the kitchen table again, sleeping through the night, and laughing because they feel safe.

From Dec 10–31, your Avenues for Hope gift helps Bonner County families move from crisis to stability with matching funds that multiply your impact.

They also make great family projects. Kids can help with tasks like stirring scrubs, filling spice jars, or tying ribbons. Not only does this make the gift more personal, but it also creates its own holiday memory in the process.

This December, let your creativity guide your giving. Look around your kitchen, pantry, or garden, and you’ll find you already have the makings of thoughtful gifts. Whether it’s a jar of rosemary oil, a tin of tallow butter, or a handmade wreath for the front door, these projects don’t just fill stockings — they carry meaning. Handmade gifts feel timeless because they reflect what matters most: care, effort, and the spirit of the season.

SANDPOINT, IDAHO

FROM GROWTH TO BALANCE

A

closer look at Sandpoint’s real estate market in 2025

Sandpoint’s real estate market in 2025 has shown signs of both shift and stability. Elevated prices, increasing inventory, and longer listing periods are defining trends, but well-positioned homes continue to perform strongly. Here’s how things evolved locally this year—and what to expect looking ahead.

PRICE TRENDS: MODEST GAINS, SOME DECLINES

The average home value in Sandpoint is about $621,747, up roughly 1.3% year-over-year. At the same time, the median sale price sits closer to $515,000, about 6.4% lower than the year before. For homes listed, the median list price is higher—around $724,021.

Taken together, this shows that prices are not crashing, but growth has slowed, and in some cases (particularly the median sold price), there’s a mild downward trend.

INVENTORY AND TIME ON MARKET: MORE CHOICES, MORE WAITING

Homes are staying on the market longer. The median days to pending status for home listings is about 49 days in late 2025. Other data shows the average days on market reaching 93, compared to about 61 the prior year.

Active inventory has grown, with more than 220 homes for sale as of late summer. While new listings were added to supply, many sellers chose to pull their properties off the market rather than make price cuts, leading to longer listing times overall.

SALES VOLUME AND BUYER BEHAVIOR

There’s been a noticeable increase in sales in some months. For example, July 2025 saw more than double the number of closed transactions compared to the same month in 2024.

Buyer behavior has shifted—properties priced aggressively or in need of significant work are seeing weaker interest, while well-maintained homes in desirable locations continue to sell more quickly. Pricing strategy and presentation are proving more important than ever.

NEW CONSTRUCTION & LOCAL SUPPLY

New construction has been gradually increasing in Bonner County, helping add to the overall supply. Builders are responding to ongoing demand for modern, efficient homes, though higher costs for materials and labor mean projects take longer and remain expensive.

For now, most of the available inventory is still resale homes, but new builds are adding important options for buyers who want updated features.

RENTAL & SHORT-TERM RENTAL TRENDS

Average monthly rent in Sandpoint is around $1,889, relatively modest compared to national averages but still a burden for many renters.

Short-term rentals remain popular. Active listings number close to 400, with average daily rates near $328. Occupancy fluctuates widely with the seasons, peaking in the summer months when tourism is strongest. For owners, this means income potential is high in July and August but tapers off considerably in the off-season.

LOOKING AHEAD: KEY THEMES FOR 2026

•Price Stabilization or Soft Declines: Prices in Sandpoint may remain essentially flat or see mild declines, especially for homes not in prime condition.

•Greater Buyer Leverage: More inventory and longer listing times give buyers negotiating room on price and terms.

•Emphasis on Presentation & Pricing: Homes that are staged, wellmaintained, and priced realistically will continue to outperform.

•Short-Term Rentals Remain Seasonal: STR demand will still peak in summer, with slower off-season occupancy.

•Interest Rates & Affordability Pressure: Mortgage rates remain a limiting factor. Unless they ease, many buyers will continue to delay purchases.

BUILDING REALISM IN SANDPOINT

2025 in Sandpoint isn’t a booming growth year—it’s one of balance and adjustment. Prices haven’t collapsed, but neither are they skyrocketing. More homes are available, but condition and location matter more than ever. For sellers, timing and presentation are key. For buyers, the market offers more breathing room but demands careful budgeting, inspection, and patience.

If you’re looking to make a move—buy, sell, or invest—grounding your decisions in real local data will make all the difference heading into 2026.

MARKET REPORT

Year-End Recap and Outlook for 2026

Sandpoint closes 2025 with a real estate market shaped by elevated prices, growing inventory, and longer days on the market. Average home values are up slightly year-over-year, though median sale prices have softened, reflecting a more balanced environment. Summer rental demand stayed strong, but off-season activity slowed, underscoring the market’s seasonal character. As 2026 approaches, stability is expected, with modest growth in well-located and well-maintained properties. Sellers who price competitively and present homes well will continue to find buyers. For buyers, patience and preparation remain key—2026 is likely to reward those who act strategically in Sandpoint’s evolving market.

THE LAND WHERE CHRISTMAS TREES GROW

HOW SANDPOINT HELPED GROW IDAHO’S CHRISTMAS TREE TRADITION

Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, how lovely are thy branches.”

When Idaho Governor Don Samuelson decided the State Capitol needed a Christmas tree, he called his friends in Sandpoint. His pal Hilmer Malm, fresh from winning the state champion Christmas tree contest, helped locate the thirtyfoot fir seen here from Priest River. The Idaho Department of Transportation hauled the tree to Boise, along with two smaller firs for the governor’s office and residence.

Historically, Sandpoint’s town tree stood at First and Cedar, the Old Post Office, the Community Building, and on school grounds. Santa arrived downtown by fire truck, candy canes

SANDPOINT’S

were handed out, and children’s letters to Santa were collected.

In the 1960s and ’70s, Christmas tree farming flourished across Bonner County—planting up to 1,200 trees per acre, taking five to ten years to mature. In 1960, sixty thousand trees were planted. While waiting for harvest, some farmers planted strawberries between the rows of their crops. Douglas fir dominated, joined by Norway spruce, Scotch pine, and white fir.

Yet many locals still preferred to wander into the National Forest to find their own perfect tree—by permit, of course— keeping alive the old Idaho custom of heading into the snowy woods to bring home Christmas.
