HELLO bonners ferry
Meet Steve Russo, Publisher Executive Director steve@like-media.com
The Season of Giving and the Fines Among Us
Winter has a way of slowing us down. The noise fades, the air sharpens, and we start to notice the things that matter most: faith, family, and the people who make this community feel like home. It’s a season that reminds us to look up, to look around, and to give thanks for the light that still shines in the world.
For over a decade, our mission has been to make a positive impact in the places where we live and work. We’ve achieved this by sharing the stories of local nonprofits and the individuals and organizations quietly doing the hard work of helping others. Those stories have reminded us just how generous this region really is. And that same generosity was evident again through The Finest, where your votes did more than just choose winners; they celebrated the people and businesses that make this community shine.
This winter, we’re building on that momentum with a new initiative to recognize local businesses that give back—owners and teams who pour their time, talent, and heart into helping others. Too often their generosity goes unseen. We want to change that.
If you know of a company making a real difference through donations, volunteerism, community events, or everyday acts of kindness, we’d love to hear from you. Nominate them by emailing editorial@likemedia.com and help us shine a light on the finest kind of leadership, the kind that serves.
And while this season is known for giving, it also reminds us of the greatest gift ever given: the gift of hope, born in a manger over two thousand years ago. That truth still speaks quietly through every act of kindness, every open door, and every effort to serve.
From all of us here, thank you for being part of our community, for believing in the good, and for helping us keep it shining.
Have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Thank you, Bonners Ferry, for showing up once again to celebrate what makes this place more than just a zip code, more than just a region. A receptionist since 1998, Katie began her career in title and escrow before moving into healthcare after the 2008 economic downturn. Over the past 14 years, Katie has grown to love everyone who walks through the clinic doors, valuing the chance to anticipate their needs and make each visit a little easier.
“People are the best part of the day,” she says. “It may seem like I just answer the phones, but it’s really so much more than that. My heart is for people—to love the lost and the found.”

Second Chance Animal Adoption
Second Chance Animal Adoption, recognized as Bonners Ferry Living Local’s Finest Organization/Nonprofit of the Year, has been saving lives and strengthening community compassion since 1998. The organization began in cooperation with then–Chief of Police Dave Kramer after witnessing the inadequate conditions at the Bonners Ferry City holding pens, where many animals were destroyed due to limited space and the absence of indoor facilities. By 2001, Second Chance had incorporated as a nonprofit, launched a thrift store to fund a new shelter, and, by 2011, celebrated the completion of its current facility, with a separate cat building added later.
Its mission is to care for every abandoned, lost, homeless, and abused animal in Boundary County and find each one a lifelong, loving home. As a no-kill shelter, Second Chance welcomes animals back if a placement isn’t the right fit, believing every animal deserves the best possible outcome.
The team is deeply grateful for this recognition, which reflects years of dedication and community trust. Led by President Stephanie Chase, Vice President Jennifer Kelson, Secretary Liz Cada, Treasurer Amy Bliss, and Board Member Mandy Young, the board works alongside staff, volunteers, and donors to fulfill its mission. As Bonners Ferry continues to grow, Second Chance remains committed to expanding its reach and giving every animal a true second chance.

FINEST COMMUNITY EVENT
Boundary County Fair
Established in 1920, the Boundary County Fair has been a valued community tradition for more than a century. What began as a small gathering to showcase agriculture, crafts, and local talent has grown into one of the county’s most anticipated annual events, bringing together families, friends, and neighbors to enjoy the traditions and spirit that define Boundary County.
Being voted Bonners Ferry Living Local’s 2025 Finest Community Event means a great deal to the Fair Board and its volunteers. “This award means so much to our small but dedicated team,” shares Jaycee Atkins, Boundary County Fair Manager. “None of it would be possible without the many volunteers who generously give their time and energy. This recognition belongs to them as much as it does to us.” With two full-time employees, several part-time staff, and nearly 75 volunteers, the fair continues to thrive through community effort and collaboration.
Each August, the fairgrounds come alive with concerts, livestock shows, 4-H exhibits, the cornhole tournament, and kids’ tractor pulls. The beer and wine garden has raised over $20,000 for fairground improvements, while local businesses sponsor events, decorate storefronts, and join the parade. The Boundary County Fair’s goal remains the same: to keep the fair fun, free, and full of Boundary County tradition while continuing to build on that foundation for generations to come.

Cornerstone Urgent Care & Family Medicine
Expanding care for Bonners Ferry’s littlest patients
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
When Ryan and Kaite Gorman founded Cornerstone Urgent Care & Family Medicine in 2023, they had one goal in mind: to bring back the kind of medical care that feels personal. “We built Cornerstone to be a place where people can get the care they deserve: time, attention, and honesty, without interference from insurance companies,” says Ryan Gorman, a nurse practitioner dual-boarded in Family and Emergency Medicine.
Since opening its doors, the locally owned clinic has become a reliable part of the Bonners Ferry community, providing both urgent and family medicine in a warm, approachable setting. Now, Cornerstone is strengthening its commitment to local families by expanding into pediatrics and introducing the community to its newest provider, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Katie Thompson.
Families have always been central to Cornerstone’s mission, and the addition of a pediatric provider builds on that foundation. “As our patient base grew, we saw the opportunity to deepen what we already offered for kids and families,” Ryan explains. “Katie’s training and background bring something really special to our community.”
Katie Thompson, MSN, APRN, CPNP, brings a remarkable blend of expertise and compassion to her role. She began her nursing career in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), caring for the most fragile newborns, and later worked as a nurse practitioner in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. After years in high-acuity pediatric medicine, she followed her calling to serve as a missionary, providing care to children and families in underserved areas around the world.
Those years shaped her approach to pediatric care in important ways. “Katie has an incredible mix of skill, humility, and compassion,” says Ryan. “Her level of pediatric expertise is rare in a rural community, and our patients instantly feel how much she cares.” Katie is the only certified pediatric nurse practitioner in Boundary County, offering local families access to care that would otherwise require travel to larger cities.
At Cornerstone, Katie provides full-spectrum pediatric services, including newborn wellness checks, developmental screenings, school and sports physicals, and sick visits. Families can now schedule directly
with her for ongoing pediatric care, supported by the same team they already know and trust. “She’s incredibly thorough and takes the time to listen,” says Ryan. “Parents tell us all the time that they feel heard and supported, and that’s exactly what we want.”
Just as important as what Cornerstone offers is how it operates. The clinic follows a direct-pay model, meaning it does not bill insurance. This model allows them to focus entirely on patient care instead of paperwork. “There’s a misconception that healthcare is expensive because of the providers,” he explains. “But the truth is, much of that cost comes from the insurance system itself. We’re seeing premiums go up across the board while families still struggle to get an appointment or an honest price. The insurance companies offer decent rates up front, then threaten to drop clinics from their networks unless the clinics agree to lower reimbursement. It’s patients who end up paying the price.”
Instead, Cornerstone keeps costs transparent and straightforward. Prices are posted clearly on the clinic’s website and in the office. “Healthcare should never be confusing or full of surprises,” Ryan says. “When families walk through our doors, we want them to know they’re getting honest care, at an honest price. That’s part of what it means to put patients before profits.”
Looking ahead, the clinic plans to expand services while maintaining its small-town feel, with goals including extended hours, additional lab testing, and continued partnerships that make healthcare more accessible to all of Boundary County.
As they continue to grow, Cornerstone Urgent Care & Family Medicine earns the trust of local families through clear communication, personal attention, and a model that puts patients first. Their approach is simple: give patients the time they need and remove the unnecessary complications from healthcare. “That’s what Cornerstone is all about: caring for families like family.”

BONNERSFERRY BADGER BOOSTERCLUB
COMMUNITY IN MOTION
Where support, spirit, and hard work come together
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
Across Bonners Ferry, the Badger spirit runs deep. Leading the charge is the Bonners Ferry Badger Booster Club, a group devoted to ensuring every high school athlete and activity has the support to succeed.
The club’s mission is simple: to provide financial and community support for all Bonners Ferry High School activities and programs. From fundraisers and events to partnerships with local businesses, the Boosters play a vital role in making sure students have what they need to succeed both on and off the field.
The Booster Club’s roots stretch back many years, beginning with a small group of parents and educators whose passion for supporting students helped build the foundation for what the organization has become today. That dedication continues, driven by community members who recognize the value of teamwork, effort, and pride in local youth.
Raising funds to support these programs is no small task. Each year, the Boosters host a range of events, including BBQing at the Bonners Ferry Tractor Pull, Mountain West Bank homecoming BBQ, and the annual Booster golf tournament at Mirror Lake Golf Course. Athletes also participate by selling Booster Club cards each fall, helping to strengthen the bond between the community and its young athletes.
the generosity extends to a larger vision
The impact of these efforts is evident throughout the school. “Last year, we helped purchase the new electronic score table in the gymnasium with the support of Universal Well Drilling and Mi Pueblo Authentic Mexican Food,” shares President Shelly Kramer. It’s one of many examples of how local businesses and volunteers come together to make improvements that benefit students for years to come.
Beyond funding equipment and uniforms, the Boosters take pride in supporting teams that qualify for state competitions, covering items like T-shirts, meals, or even a spirit bus. “We have a standard giving to our athletes that head to state,” Kramer says. “Some funds will also help with purchasing half of the Hudl membership.”
That generosity extends to a larger vision for the future. “Boosters are about community,” Kramer adds. “The goal is to resurface the track at the high school. This project will take hundreds of thousands of dollars, but we’re hopeful we can secure local grants and keep fundraising.”
Community members and businesses interested in supporting the Boosters can connect through the club’s Facebook @BF Badger Booster Club, email badgerboosters9b@gmail.com, or reach out directly to a board member, including President Shelly Kramer, Treasurer Anne Tompkins, Heather Foster, Kendra Maas, or Heidi Stockton.
From flipping burgers to organizing tournaments, the Bonners Ferry Badger Booster Club continues to bring the community together in support of its youth—because Bonners Ferry always finds a way to say, “GO BADGERS!”

THE STAR AND THE STORY OF IMMANUEL
It’s one of the most recognized images in human history: a star shining above a manger in Bethlehem. It’s been painted, sung about, and printed on countless Christmas cards. But behind the nativity scenes and pageants lies one of the most remarkable truths in all of Scripture: the Creator of the heavens used His own creation to announce His arrival.
Matthew tells us about a group of wise men from the east, learned men who studied both the stars and the sacred writings of old. They likely came from the region once ruled by Babylon, where generations earlier the prophet Daniel had served as chief among the Magi. Through him, echoes of Israel’s hope had been preserved, whispers of a coming King, a promised Messiah, and even the prophecy that “a star shall come out of Jacob.”
So when a light appeared that was unlike any they had ever seen, they recognized its meaning. This wasn’t a coincidence
A Star SHALL COME OUT OF Jacob.
or a cosmic curiosity; it was fulfillment. What Daniel had foretold, the heavens were now declaring. And they followed.
That journey would take them hundreds of miles, across deserts and danger, into the heart of Judea. They had no map, only a star that moved, stopped, and stood over the very place where the Christ child lay. The detail is easy to miss but profound in meaning: the same God who spoke light into existence in Genesis was now using that light to declare His own birth. The heavens were literally pointing to earth.
John begins his gospel not with shepherds or angels but with eternity:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
IMMANUEL, MEANING “GOD WITH US.”
That’s the heart of Christmas, the Incarnation. God didn’t send an idea, a philosophy, or a symbolic hope. He came Himself. The infinite became an infant. The Maker of the stars entered the world beneath them.
Think about that. The hands that flung galaxies into orbit were now small enough to fit inside Mary’s palm. The same voice that thundered, “Let there be light,” was now the soft cry of a newborn. The very Author of life was breathing our air.
This is the mystery of Christmas—not sentimental nostalgia, but the unthinkable humility of God. The Word became flesh, and the heavens couldn’t stay silent about it.
And tucked into Matthew’s account is another name: Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” It’s not just poetic. It’s personal. The child in the manger wasn’t a symbol of hope; He was hope. He was God, here, among His people.
The star was more than a miracle of astronomy; it was a declaration. Psalm 19 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” That night in Bethlehem, they did precisely that, not abstractly, but personally. Some scholars believe the Star of Bethlehem may have been a rare planetary alignment, a supernova, or something beyond the realm of science altogether. But the point isn’t how it happened – it’s why.
The Magi saw that light and came to worship. They brought gold for a King, frankincense for a God, and myrrh for the One who would one day die. Every gift spoke of His purpose. They arrived as seekers of truth and left as worshipers of the Truth Himself. And in that humble house, these men who had searched the skies finally saw Immanuel—God with us!
It’s easy to read the Christmas story and view it as ancient history, but the pattern remains unchanged. God still reveals Himself to those who seek Him. He still draws outsiders in. Those Magi represent every one of us who has ever looked for meaning, who has
“THE TRUE
LIGHT THAT
E
GIVES LIGHT TO
VERYONE WAS COMING INTO THE World.”
ever looked for meaning, who has ever followed a faint light through the dark, hoping it leads to something real. They remind us that God’s invitation extends beyond borders, beyond religion, beyond what we think we know.
And when we finally come face to face with Jesus, like those travelers, we realize the light we were following wasn’t far away after all. It was leading us home to Immanuel.
John wrote, “The true Light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” That’s the miracle of the Incarnation, not that a star appeared in the sky, but that the Light of the world stepped into human form.
The same Jesus who spoke galaxies into existence entered human time and space to rescue it. He didn’t just come to be admired. He came to redeem. He didn’t just shine from afar. He stepped into the darkness so He could bring us out of it. That’s why the Christmas story still matters, because every generation needs that light again. Every heart needs to know Immanuel, the God who is not far away but always near.
Two thousand years later, we still hang stars on trees and rooftops. Maybe we don’t think much about what they mean. But the truth remains: that star was never about astronomy. It was about an invitation.
The Magi saw it and came. The shepherds heard it and ran. Mary held it in her arms. And today, that same light still calls to hearts that are searching. Christmas isn’t just about looking back to a manger. It’s about realizing that the same God who once used a star to guide strangers still uses light to guide us – sometimes in ways we don’t expect, sometimes right where we are. Because the God who once pointed heaven to earth still points hearts to Himself.
And His name is still Immanuel. God with us!
Keeping Care Close to Home:
DR. ROSE WELCOMES BOUNDARY COUNTY KIDS
Helping families navigate each chapter of childhood
by DANIELLE LARSSON, Boundary Community Hospital
For families in Boundary County, raising kids comes with big questions and even bigger hearts. At Boundary Community Clinics, Dr. Hailey Rose is here to support parents through every stage of childhood, from newborn visits to sick visits to sports physicals and everything in between.
A Bonners Ferry native, Dr. Rose began her healthcare journey at Boundary Community Hospital as a CNA in the early 2000s. Today, she is a highly trained pediatrician caring for children ages 0–18, with flexibility for established patients who head off to college. As a mom of two, she understands how busy family life can be and how important it is to have trusted pediatric care close to home.
In her clinic, well-child checks are more than routine visits. They are opportunities to track development, catch concerns early, and talk openly about sleep, nutrition, mental health, school challenges, and the everyday questions that come with raising kids. Her approach centers on strong communication, respect, and long-term relationships with families.
Living in a rural community means local providers often care for a wider range of needs. Dr. Rose partners closely with Boundary Community Hospital, where labs and studies can be performed locally, including pediatric echocardiograms, offering families access to advanced testing without leaving the county. For Dr. Rose, coming home to practice medicine is especially meaningful. “Caring for kids in the same community that raised me is truly special. I want families to feel heard, supported, and confident that they have quality pediatric care without leaving Boundary County,” she said.
Dr. Rose is available Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 5 pm and is currently accepting new patients. If you are looking for a pediatrician who blends up-to-date expertise with a local mom’s understanding, she is ready to support your family.
To schedule an appointment, call or text (208) 267-3655 and keep your child’s care close to home.

Beyond RESOLUTIONS
Try a January Joy List
Let’s be honest—New Year’s resolutions come with a lot of pressure. The word itself feels heavy, like something you have to fix. But what if January wasn’t about overhauling your life, and instead about infusing it with more of what lights you up?
Enter the January Joy List—a refreshing twist on the typical resolution. Instead of promising to eat less, do more, or finally tackle that inbox, try asking: What brings me joy? What makes me feel alive, curious, or calm?
Your list can be as simple or quirky as you want. Think:
• Rewatching your favorite childhood movie
• Taking a slow walk without your phone
• Fresh sheets and a good book
• Calling a friend just to laugh
• Visiting a local bakery for the “just because” pastry
This isn’t about productivity—it’s about presence. And by filling January with little sparks of joy, you may find more motivation and clarity than any resolution could ever offer.
Here’s the beauty: your list doesn’t have to be long, and it definitely doesn’t have to be impressive. It just has to be you. Post it on your fridge. Scribble it in a notebook. Or keep it private and sacred.
The New Year doesn’t have to be a sprint toward self-improvement. Sometimes, the best way to begin again is by remembering what makes life sweet in the first place.
This January, skip the pressure. Start with joy.

The holidays are meant to be joyful, not stressful. Whether you’re hosting a big family gathering or a cozy night with close friends, try these simple tips to make December entertaining feel festive, not frantic:
Set the Mood Early
Light seasonal candles (think pine, clove, or cranberry), turn on a mellow playlist, and dim overhead lights in favor of string lights or lamps. A warm atmosphere goes a long way.
Prep & Plate Ahead
Choose appetizers and desserts that can be made the night before. Arrange serving platters ahead of time so you can enjoy the gathering instead of being stuck in the kitchen.

Garlic & HerbPrime Rib Roast
Tips for Success
• Use a meat thermometer for best accuracy.
• Don't skip the resting period—it’s essential for juicy meat.
• Leftovers make excellent French dip sandwiches or a hearty breakfast hash the next day.
• Remove the roast from the refrigerator 2–3 hours before cooking.
• Pat dry with paper towels and place it on a rack in a roasting pan.
• Preheat oven and prepare seasoning.
• Preheat oven to 450°F.
• In a small bowl, combine olive oil, garlic, rosemary, thyme, salt, pepper, and Dijon mustard (if using).
• Rub the mixture all over the surface of the roast, pressing it into the meat.
• Roast the prime rib.
• Place roast bone-side down in the pan. Roast at 450°F for 20 minutes to develop a crust.
• Reduce oven temperature to 325°F and continue roasting for 90–120 minutes, depending on size and desired doneness:
- 120–125°F for rare
- 130–135°F for medium-rare
- 140–145°F for medium
Rest the roast
• Transfer the roast to a cutting board and tent loosely with foil.
• Let rest for at least 30 minutes to allow juices to redistribute.
• While resting, prepare any sauces or sides.
Slice and serve
• Carve between the bones into thick slices.
• Serve with horseradish sauce or au jus, and garnish with fresh
