Lighthouse Point resident and high school junior Makena Vargo (left) selected Little Free Library as her student service project because it combined three of her favorite things — reading, art and visiting the library. The Little Free Library program places book-sharing boxes in specific locations to encourage reading and a sense of community. Makena worked with City staff and the Friends of the Lighthouse Point Library on marketing, design, construction, and fundraising. The initial Little Free Library fundraising goal was $1,800; as of press time, the total amount raised was $2,855. All monies not used by Makena’s Little Free Library project have been transferred to the Friends of the Lighthouse Point Library’s Youth Fund. In 2019 this fund supported items including: library STEAM labs, children’s books, school

outreach, craft stations, Kids’ Coding Club, and the Teen Advisory Board (of which Makena is a member). Makena and the Friends of the Library hope that this Little Free Library will encourage reading, promote the Lighthouse Point Library, and be beneficial to the Lighthouse Point community.
