Stepping up with STEM

TWO LOCAL SCHOOLS WIN PRESTIGIOUS GRANTS

Thousands of students at Sawgrass Springs Middle School in Coral Springs and Hallandale Magnet High School in Hallandale Beach will soon have additional opportunities to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs thanks to Classroom Makeover Grants received from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL).

In celebration of FPL’s centennial, the company super-sized the program this year, expanding from five STEM Classroom Makeover Grants to 20 grants across the state – quadrupling the program and devoting $1 million to benefit Florida students. Sawgrass Springs Middle and Hallandale Magnet High School will each receive a $50,000 grant to transform their classroom into an innovative STEM learning space.

“At FPL, we believe in the power of education and the endless possibilities that STEM learning can unlock for students. We are incredibly excited to witness the creativity and growth that will flourish in each of the schools that

receive these game-changing grants,” Pam Rauch, FPL Vice President of External Affairs and Economic Development stated in a press release. “We strongly believe that STEM education is the cornerstone of a prosperous future, and these grants will serve as a catalyst for fostering innovation, curiosity and lifelong learning in our communities. We are honored to be able to grow the program to the benefit of even more students.”

Each school will have one year to redesign and revitalize their classrooms, infusing them with cutting-edge technological resources, modern equipment and hands-on learning materials. From virtual reality and 3D printers to robotics kits and interactive displays, these schools will purchase the supplies they need to foster a dynamic learning environment that encourages critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving skills. Previous Classroom Makeover Grant winners from Broward County include Cypress Run Education Center School in Pompano Beach, Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale and Lauderdale Lakes Middle School. For more information on FPL’s educational programs, visit www.FPL.com/Education.

Tiny Campers, Big Adventures

How To Get Your Preschooler Excited For Day Camp

“Who’s excited about camp?”

My twin toddlers looked up at me with perplexed expressions on their faces. They had no idea what I was talking about. Since they were already signed up, I wanted to ensure they had fun. Here’s how I got them excited about their first day at camp:

GO TO THE LIBRARY

Go to the local library with your aspiring camper and check out every video and picture book regarding the topic. You can also look on YouTube for camp videos or songs or stream the videos online through your library. The idea behind this is to create excitement and help them to understand what to expect. You can also talk about your own camp experiences.

HIT THE STORES

With the camp list in hand, we went to a local mall and shopped for the items.

They loved picking out their favorite towel, bathing suit and sunglasses. I even let them buy a new backpack just for camp. While we shopped, we discussed the different activities they would participate in at camp, like swimming and sports.

LEARNING ABOUT FRIENDSHIP

When you are at home playing games like Candy Land with your kids, talk about things like taking turns and how to start conversations with new kids. Ask your children questions like, “What are some things you can talk about with kids your age?” Or ask them, “What are some ways to make new friends?” You can also read books or watch movies about friendship.

PLAY CAMP GAMES

You can play some camp games at home to get them excited and prepared. One common camp game is mini Olympics. You can set up different types of races, like relay races. Another suggestion is to create a scavenger hunt with camp-related items like a

backpack and sunglasses. After you are done, you can cook up some s’mores.

GO SWIMMING

Most summer camps offer swimming lessons and free time in the water. You will want to take your child swimming beforehand to discuss water safety and to help reinforce that swimming is fun. Many kids fear going into the water when they first take swimming lessons, especially when tons of kids are splashing around. By taking your child swimming before camp starts, you will ease some of these anxieties.

SCHEDULE A VISIT

Most camps will offer an open house or orientation to help your child understand what camp will be like. This is a perfect time for your future camper to ask questions and meet counselors or other campers. If possible, before camp starts, set up a play date with some kids who

Kindergarten

Fostering Self-Worth and SelfConfidence

We are currently taking enrollments for the Atlantis Summer Camp program and for the 25/26 School Year are going to be at the camp. It will make it easier during drop-off if they recognize some familiar faces.

CREATE A COUNTDOWN

My kids love countdowns for holidays like Christmas and vacations. You can keep track of the number of days until camp starts by using a countdown calendar or app or creating paper chain links for the number of days until camp starts that you tear off every day. This helps to build excitement and prepare them for when the big day will occur.

WHO’S EXCITED ABOUT CAMP?

After I did all these suggested activities with my twins, when I asked the question again, they both jumped up and down with excitement. And when they attended camp, they loved it.

A Taste of the Tropics

Sweet & Savory Pineapple Popper Bowls

This dish is inspired by a jalapeño popper recipe my sister-in-law gave me 20 years ago. When she first told me to mix ketchup and soy sauce, I did a double take—but it turns out to be a fabulous combination. This recipe dishes up all the bold, smoky-sweet flavors of jalapeño poppers— with no stuffing required. I don’t often have time to make labor-intensive poppers, so I turned the concept into a sheet pan dinner instead. Traditional poppers are filled with cream cheese to tame the heat; here, a dollop of sour cream and sliced avocado does the trick. Feel free to omit the jalapeño for a less fiery dinner.

Pineapple Popper Bowls

Ingredients:

1/2 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons pineapple juice (see note)

1/2 cup soy sauce

2–3 tablespoons brown sugar

4 cloves garlic, grated

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

2 pounds boneless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces

2–3 cups fresh pineapple, cut into 1-inch chunks

2–6 jalapeños, sliced (optional—depending on how hot you like it)

6 slices bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces

For Serving:

Cooked jasmine rice

Sliced scallions

Sour cream

Sliced avocado

Preparation:

• Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper.

• In a medium bowl, combine the ketchup, pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic and smoked paprika. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved. Remove about 1/4 cup of the sauce to a small bowl to serve on the side later.

• Add the chicken, bacon, pineapple, and jalapeños, and stir until everything is well coated. (Use a large spoon or spatula to stir. If using your hands, wear gloves — jalapeños can burn.)

• Bake for 20–30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. (Breasts will cook faster than thighs.) If you’d like a bit of char, broil for an additional 2 minutes — just keep a close eye on it, and make sure no parchment is exposed near the broiler.

• Serve in bowls over jasmine rice and top with scallions, avocado, a dollop of sour cream, and the extra sauce.

Note: If you’re using precut pineapple, use the juice from the container. If it doesn’t quite measure 2 tablespoons, that’s okay. You can add a little extra brown sugar if you want a sweeter sauce.

7 FUN WAYS TO ENGAGE KIDS' MINDS

Do your kids seem a little less ready for school after each summer break? If the answer is yes, don’t worry. They’re far from alone. It’s a common experience known as the “summer learning slide.” Research shows that kids typically lose the equivalent of a month’s worth of learning over the summer break – and it gets worse the older they get.

So, what can parents do to give the slide the slip? On the next page are seven fun activities that have worked for our teenage son, and I bet they’ll help your kids, too.

READ A FICTION AND A NON-FICTION BOOK EVERY OTHER WEEK

Since our son learned to read, we’ve had him read one fiction and one non-fiction book every other week to keep his reading and comprehension skills at grade level. It’s summer after all, so instead of assigning him books like he’s used to from school, we let him choose what to read.

KEEP A VACATION JOURNAL

We take at least one big family vacation trip every summer, and since our son was very young we’ve had him keep a daily journal where he writes about what we did that day. It’s been a great way to keep his writing skills up-to-date and document his childhood.

EMAIL FAMILY AND FRIENDS

To strengthen our son’s writing skills, we also have him email family and friends, especially those people we don’t get to see that much during the year. Teenagers prefer texting, but we insist that he emails them because texts are usually full of broken sentences, odd grammar and spelling mistakes.

PLAY MATH-BASED BOARD GAMES

In the evening, whether we’re on a family vacation trip or at home, we play math games like Monopoly or spelling games like Scrabble. The key is to focus on the fun part – the competition – rather than the learning. If you do that, the learning will happen automatically.

WATCH FEATURE AND DOCUMENTARY MOVIES

Aside from playing a board game or two, we also watch movies in the evening. With all the streaming services available, it’s not that hard to find a documentary or feature film which also happens to be educational. Movies are some of the most fun ways to learn about other time periods, cultures and current events.

DOWNLOAD EDUCATIONAL APPS

Although we try to make our son’s summer activities as social as possible, we also indulge his interest in anything technological, like letting him download all the educational apps he wants. He really likes quiz apps, which like the board game Trivial Pursuit, is great for developing kids’ general knowledge.

VISIT ARTS, HISTORY AND NATURAL SCIENCE MUSEUMS

Museum visits are another great way to keep your kids involved with the arts, history and natural science. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a big or a small city. Even the smallest town often has a museum nearby. Going to the local town museum and learning about your own history can be surprisingly fun. 1 3 5 7 2 4 6

When the kids are bored and crabby because it’s been hot and humid for months on end and you seek a bit of air-conditioned retail therapy, don’t forget about a trip to the bookstore. Set a budget for each kid and head out to your local shop. If you are looking for something a little off the beaten path, check out these independent South Florida book stores. And of course, there’s always the local library!

Bookleggers Library

A little bit bookstore, a little bit library, this small but mighty concept is Miami's first and only free bookstore. The concept expands access to free books as a way of building community. The shop intakes books on an appointment basis, and is open to book aficionados Tuesdays through Saturdays noon to 5 p.m. Bookleggers Library is located at the Bakehouse Art Complex at 561 NW 32 St., Miami. Empty Nest

A LETTER TO MY LITTLEST AS SHE LEAVES FOR COLLEGE

To my baby bird:

I’ve read that a songbird leaves the nest at about 10 days old. Ten days! But as the eager fledgling prepares for liftoff, mom and dad bird stay close, offering support and guidance when they hear their little one chirp.

I wonder, “How can Mama Bird possibly teach Baby everything she needs to know in less than two weeks? I’ve had 18 years, and I worry, ‘have I taught you most – if not all – of those important life lessons you need to launch?”

I think back to that time we found a featherless nestling on the ground with its mama squawking up a storm from her perch high above. Remember? With neighborhood teamwork, and a tall ladder, we hoisted the little one back up into its safe space in the nest, soon to be under mama’s wing once again. That one wasn’t quite ready yet.

But, my baby bird, as deeply as I will miss you, I realize that you are more than ready for this new adventure. You have always had a powerful pair of wings, and now is your time to fly.

Since day one, you were small but mighty. You are fierce, strong and smart. You are humble and kind. You are compassionate, caring and considerate. Your ability to overcome adversity, challenges and hardships teaches you unexpected lessons and makes you that much stronger. You make me smile. Every. Single. Day. The reality is, you are no longer a baby bird; you are an amazing young woman. You now encompass the energy of an eagle –a symbol of beauty, courage, wisdom, honor, pride, determination and grace.

Along your journey, continue to believe in yourself, and always

stay true to you. Trust your instincts. They are usually right. Remember the lessons you have learned, and will continue to learn, along the way. They will continue to serve you well. Try new things, celebrate your accomplishments, and learn from your mistakes; know your self-worth, and surround yourself with those who value it; work hard in all that you do, it always pays off; use the buddy system (yes, still!); and make sure to call home, often.

And as you know, it is a guarantee that on college move-in day (and the next day, and the next...), I will cry. You witnessed this when your sister set off for college… and I thank you for your support! But please know that I will be okay. I’m an emotional one. The same mom who wore those dark, oversized glasses when I dropped you off for your first day of Kindergarten. Now you know, there was a reason for that. And in those tears, there are happy ones. I am so very proud of you, and eager for you to begin this new chapter of your life, pursuing independence and education. Following your dreams and achieving your goals. I cannot wait to see all that you accomplish.

Eagles, with their keen vision, don’t just leave the nest; they set their sights on something and they go and get it. Their vision inspires them. I know yours will, too. This is your time to explore the world and soar to great heights. Time to fly.

We love you so very much, and will always be there for you back at the nest.

Just chirp.

Love, Mom
