Get Ready for Storm Season

With hurricane season underway, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) urges Floridians to be prepared, and aware of potential safety hazards at all times. Below is a checklist of important details FPL recommends to consider before, during and after a storm.

Create an emergency plan with your family.

Y Determine if your home or business is in a flood and/or evacuation zone and review evacuation routes.

Y Determine your backup power source or make arrangements to relocate if a storm warning is issued.

Y The Division of Emergency Management recommends keeping gas tanks at least half full during hurricane season. For electric vehicles, make sure to maintain a 50%-80% charge at all times.

Y Contact your local emergency management office if you or anyone you know has special needs, in case of evacuations. Apply for FPL's Medically Essential Service if someone in your home is dependent on electric-powered, life-sustaining medical equipment.

Build an emergency kit.

Y Check radio, flashlights and batteries that can support you in case you experience a power outage during a storm.

Y Have a phone charger, power banks and a car charger available.

Y Gather supplies such as non-perishable food, disposable dinnerware and utensils, medications and prescriptions, personal hygiene supplies, baby supplies, pet food, trash bags, toilet paper and soaps and detergents.

Y Collect important documents and put them in a waterproof container – including insurance policies, health cards, birth certificates, Social Security cards, a list of important phone numbers and medications and a copy of your FPL bill.

Stay safe and informed.

Y If you use a portable generator, read and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to set it up outside – not in your home or garage – and connect appliances directly to it. Do not wire your generator directly to your breaker or fuse box, because the power you generate may flow back into power lines and cause injuries.

Y Bookmark FPL.com, download the FPL Mobile App and save 1-800-4-OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243) to your cell phone to report and check the status of your restoration.

Y Stay far away from and do not touch any downed power lines or flooded and debris-laden areas that may be hiding downed power lines. Call 911 and 1-800-4-OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243) if you see downed power lines or damaged electrical equipment.

Y Follow local news and @insideFPL for updates on storm conditions and heed warnings.

Prepare your home.

Y Store outside objects inside, fasten doors and windows, cover valuables and furniture with plastic and move away from windows

Y Turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, including pool equipment.

Y If your roof or windows leak, water in your walls and ceiling may come into contact with electrical wiring. Immediately turn off your circuit breakers, disconnect all electrical appliances that are still plugged in, and turn off all wall switches. Never stand in water while operating switches or unplugging any electrical device.

Y Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings ahead of time to keep food fresh longer in the event of a power outage.

Y DO NOT attempt to trim any vegetation growing on or near any overhead power lines. Only hire specially trained line-clearing professionals to trim trees and other vegetation near power lines. Visit FPL.com/trees for more information on our tree trimming policies.

Y Look up and note the location of power lines before you begin working on a ladder. Be sure that ladders or scaffolds are far enough away so that you – and the ends of the tools you're using – don't come within 10 feet of main or neighborhood power lines.

A Fun-filled Weekend of Fan Culture

The annual three-day pop culture convention, Florida Supercon, is back, celebrating everything from anime and comic books to video games and cosplay.

Taking place Friday through Sunday, July 18th through the 20th at the Miami Beach Convention Center, there will be live panels, celebrity guests, gaming, exhibitors, an Artist Alley, and a Cosplay Central area devoted to the art of costumes, crafts and characters.

Featured guests this year include John Boyega (Star Wars, Attack the Block, They Cloned Tyrone, Pacific Rim), Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, Thor: The Dark World, 28 Days Later, True Detective) and Billie Piper (Doctor Who, Penny Dreadful). Other scheduled guests include Zach Aguilar (Demon Slayer, Genshin Impact, Fire Emblem: Three Houses), Anthony Michael Hall (The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science) and Ilan Mitchell-Smith (Weird Science, Superboy), among many others.

For children, a Family HQ section will provide family-friendly, interactive activities, such as performances, drawing and other hands-on fun all weekend long. Here, kids can create their own beaded lizard craft in different colors and patterns, using provided supplies.

There will also be plenty of food options for purchase – from sushi and vegan to tacos and pizza – so you can stay nourished and settle in for a full day (or weekend) of excitement.

The Miami Beach Convention Center is located at 1901 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach. Hours of the show are Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual admission tickets, packages, and passes for autographs and photo opportunities are available online. Flamingo-sighting Season (sort of)

No, you won’t find wild flamingos parading down Biscayne Boulevard – but that doesn’t stop Miami from embracing its unofficial mascot. From plastic lawn ornaments to neon signs to murals in Wynwood, flamingos are everywhere. For families, searching for flamingos can be your unofficial summer scavenger hunt. Spot one on a restaurant menu? That’s one point. Catch a glimpse of a giant inflatable version poolside – that’s bonus points for a 3-D version. The real ones do exist (check out Zoo Miami or Flamingo Gardens), but part of the fun is simply noticing how deeply this incredible pink bird has nested in Miami’s identity. Challenge your kids to count the number of flamingos they see in a day. Or keep a scorecard for the whole summer. The winner gets the the ice cream of their choice!

Problem Solved

A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE OFFERS BIG REWARDS

Years ago, my dad took his car to the dealership for a quick repair. They told him it would take, at most, an hour, so he decided to have breakfast at a diner across the street. He was seated at a booth by a window. Well, I don’t know that detail for sure, but he told the story a few times over the years, and that’s how I always pictured it. He ordered coffee and his “usual” sunny-side-up eggs –probably with home fries and super-burnt toast.

The diner, I imagine, had cracked vinyl booths and a menu the size of Moby Dick. The kind of place where coffee is poured from a glass carafe, the air is heavy with the scent of bacon and pancake syrup, and a large glass sugar dispenser stands guard on every table.

The coffee arrived first, as it usually does in any diner. Then – this part’s a little fuzzy – maybe they brought him the wrong breakfast, or maybe the eggs were scrambled instead of fried. Maybe the toast was merely toasted, not scorched to resemble cooled volcanic lava the way my dad liked it. Whatever the specifics, about 45 minutes passed, and all he’d been served was that lone cup of coffee. He finally summoned the waitress and asked for the check. He mentioned he was just killing time while his car was worked on across the street.

It’s not about money – it’s about perspective, grace, and not letting minor frustrations take up too much space in your brain. It’s all too easy to get worked up over a missing soccer sock or an I-95 traffic jam that makes you late for the kids’ dental check-ups.

She was overly apologetic about the less-than-stellar service – and the fact that he never actually was served breakfast.

To which my dad replied, “Any problem that can be solved with two bucks isn’t a problem at all.”

(Please note: this was years ago, when a cup of diner coffee ran about one dollar.)

I’ve thought about that line more times than I can count. “Any problem I have that can be solved with two bucks, isn’t a problem at all.”

Just last night, I almost freaked out. I’d made homemade pizza dough in the afternoon, and once it was done with its second rise, I was ready to finish the job. But when I opened the package of mozzarella, it had this odd brown stuff all over it. It wasn’t mold, just some bizarre gunk –maybe from the factory floor. Whatever it was, I wasn’t cooking with it. I stared down at that block of mozzarella like a woman scorned. I had been betrayed by cheese. It’s entirely possible the anger radiating from my eyes could have melted it right there on the cutting board. I’d gone through the trouble of making dough from scratch, and now I was without mozzarella. Not a good look for someone planning to serve homemade pizza for dinner.

But then I took a breath. I remembered my dad’s lone cup of diner coffee. The apologetic waitress. The calm shrug of a man who knew when to let something go. I changed gears. Dug around the fridge and found some white cheddar.

Not traditional, sure – but it melted like a dream.

I think my dad would’ve approved. Maybe even said, “Any problem that can be solved with cheese isn’t a problem at all.”

Susan Rosser is the editor of South Florida Family Life She has a tendency to get worked up about the small stuff, but is hoping to solve more of life’s problems with cheeses of all sorts.

SARASOTA Sunn y

IT’S ALWAYS SUMMER IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

From its sugar-sand beaches and stunning sunsets to its vibrant art scene and engaging attractions, there’s a lot to love about Sarasota. Situated just south of Tampa, the city was once the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus. With such a rich mix of offerings and an easygoing atmosphere, there’s something for everyone on Florida’s Cultural Coast. Fortunately for us, our neighbor to the west is just a short drive away. So pack your bags, pile in the car, and head to Sarasota for a memorable trip with the family. Here we offer some suggestions to get your wheels turning.

Attractions

Siesta Key Beach

While the rest of the country weathers the winter chill, we have the benefit of strolling the beach barefoot – in January. People worldwide travel from afar to experience this award-winning beach for its silky-smooth white quartz sand and crystal blue water. The scenery is so beautiful that it ranked #2 in the U.S. in 2024 for Best Beach in the world by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards and served as the set for the first four seasons of the MTV Siesta Key reality television series. Luckily for us locals, we get to bask in the beauty of Siesta Key Beach all year long.

The Ringling

Learn about art, culture and society as you tour a variety of collections ranging from art and circus to history and architecture. The experience gives insight into the vision of circus impresario John Ringling and his wife Mable to make Sarasota a world-class destination. The estate includes the Museum of Art, the Circus Museum, the 1920s mansion Ca’ d’Zan, the Historic Asolo Theatre and Bayfront Gardens. Special scheduled events feature family art making, story time and stroller tours designed specifically for families with infants and toddlers. The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art is located at 5401 Bay Shore Rd. in Sarasota. For more information, call 941-359-5700 or visit www.ringling.org.

Myakka River State Park

Visit one of Florida's oldest and largest parks with a beautiful backdrop of 58-square-miles of wildflower covered prairies and wild wetlands. Pack a picnic and make a day of it by bicycling, birdwatching or taking a guided boat ride. Bicycle, canoe and kayak rentals are also available. And, if your family is the outdoorsy type, forgo the hotel and rent a cabin or a primitive campsite where you can pitch your own tent. The park is open 8 a.m. until sunset, 365 days a year. The cost is $6 per vehicle (2-8 people) or $4 for a single-occupant vehicle. Myakka River State Park is located at 13208 State Road 72 in Sarasota. To learn more, call 941-361-6511 or visit www.floridastateparks.org.

Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary

Guest are guided through a yoga flow while two silver foxes, Stormy and Miko play freely and interact with yogis. There are other activities too, including lemur yoga, tiger yoga (outside the habitat!), and interactive experiences where you can connect with a wallaby or a capybara. The Old Salty Dog

Known for casual dining and a comfortable atmosphere, The Old Salty Dog serves up delectable dishes, cool drinks and even cooler kids meals that are plated on a frisbee. It comes topped with sauerkraut, bacon, grilled onion, mushrooms, and four different kinds of cheese – American, cheddar, pepper jack and Swiss. You will not leave hungry. ALL THAT GLITTERS

Winston and Nicole are just your normal parents of three kids. Except that he’s a Grammy-winning music producer—and she’s a former supermodel. They wanted a change of pace and a community that was a good fit for their family. Nicole was unaware of Ave Maria. “But when we pulled in, I was like, ‘oh wow,’” she laughs. “I called my mom and told her we were moving. I hadn’t expected to like small-town living, but we’re able to rest and relax here. We do bike rides, the water park, and all the festivals.” Winston nods and says, “Ave Maria’s a great place and constantly getting better.”

Glam and fam go hand-in-hand in Ave Maria— A Big Kind of Small Town.

AVE MARIA

A BIG KIND OF SMALL TOWN

Between Naples and Fort Lauderdale lies the balance you’ve been looking for. Nestled in the heart of Collier County, Ave Maria may be the biggest surprise of Southwest Florida. The slogan, “A Big Kind of Small Town” emphasizes Ave Maria having all the conveniences of a big town, but with small town connections. New homes from four premier builders start in the high $200s.

Whether it’s a family day at the water park, or a personal best on the morning run, it’s game on at Ave Maria. The fields, parks and recreation facilities, and golf clubs offer good times, good games, and heart-pumping activities for everyone.

Ave Maria was founded on the principles of education, family and community and it remains true today. Educational offerings within the community serve all age groups, from preschool through college and include Ave Maria University, the Rhodora J. Donahue Academy for grades K-12, and a preschool for ages 2-4 years old. A Collier County public elementary school is currently being constructed for the 2026-27 school year and will offer an A-rated quality education for 900 students.

Healthy living is another pillar of the Ave Maria familyfriendly culture. A certified Blue Zones community, Ave Maria residents themselves earned this prestigious designation given only to areas that provide healthy, community-focused lifestyle options to its residents.

A dedicated lifestyle staff, for example, organizes year-round activities. From swim lessons at the water park to festivals at North Park, residents find common ground to connect. South Park features softball fields, bocce ball courts, amphitheater, a dog park, and picnic pavilions. North Park offers soccer and baseball fields, basketball and tennis courts, a tot lot playground, disc golf, and concession stand. The Ave Maria Water Park includes an interactive aqua playground, two water slides, lap pool, water play area, beach volleyball, and CJ’s Water Park Café.

The community’s residents also find ways to gather at the centrally located Town Center, which features more than 60 businesses. All the conveniences of daily life are at the center of town and within walking distances for most residents, who enjoy a Publix grocery store, dining, retail shops, and healthcare services. This heart-of-the-community location is also home to a variety of free events held throughout the year, including Taste of Ave, Blues Brews & BBQ Festival, Margarita & Taco Festival, weekly Farmers Markets and more.

Another element of a healthy community is a focus on the environment. At Ave Maria, land conservation is a central tenet. More than 17,000 acres of nature preserves surround the community, which also offers more than 100 miles of walking, biking and hiking paths.

Busy Having Fun

Sera is the oldest sibling in her family – leader of the pack and guide to all Ave Maria has to offer kids growing up. “There’s so much fun stuff to do,” she said. “So many places to go and friends to hang out with.” That often means loading up her brother and sisters, and an occasional neighbor kid or two, into the family golf cart for a day’s excursion. It might begin at the clubhouse pool or Ave Maria’s Water Park. Then a trip to the Town Center for a smoothie and a little shopping.

‘‘

Loving Little League

Kalel is living his best life. He joined Ave Maria Little League as a pitcher and first baseman. “I love that I get to play with all my friends, and we always have fun!” Kalel’s mom, Ariel agrees. “Our fields are beautiful, and the location of our parks are within walking distance for many Ave Maria residents, so our teams’ parents can efficiently plan practices and their dinner times, study hours and other family commitments. To have these parks in our town where anyone can walk or golf cart to is greatly beneficial.”

‘‘

Life with a Smile On

A few years ago, Jim’s brother brought him to Ave Maria to play golf at Panther Run Golf Club. “I was looking for a small town,” he said, “and the people are awesome.” In his spare time he’s a runner. “I’m known as the jogger with a smile on my face,” he said.

“A neighbor asked me why I was smiling all the time. I said, because we live in paradise.”

The Hernandez Family

Ariel and Juan Hernandez were seeking a fresh start for their family.

Having lived in Broward County –Juan in law enforcement and Ariel managing a thriving therapy practice – their lives were full and fulfilling. However, the congestion of city living had begun to wear on them, and they longed for a neighborhood with a more connected, community-oriented feel.

Juan began researching the best places to raise a family, and one of the first names that appeared on his list was Ave Maria, an awardwinning master-planned community located halfway between Broward County and Naples, with convenient access to Alligator Alley. Juan dug deeper into his research and became convinced Ave Maria was the right place for them.

“I was skeptical because I never heard of this place,” Ariel said. After some persuasion, she agreed to visit with her husband to tour the community, visit model homes and get a sense of what living there would be like. “I saw the homes and instantly fell in love with them,” she shared. “We drove through the neighborhood, and everyone was so friendly. We saw kids riding their bikes – something we hadn’t seen in forever.”

After that initial visit they decided to call Ave Maria home. Ariel’s family wasn’t so sure about the change. Her parents, Donna and Luis, were convinced the Hernandez family would be back within a year. However, after visiting they found Ave Maria was more than they had expected. “Donna and I were sad when they moved,” Luis shared, “but when we visited, we loved it so much, we decided to move here too.”

Soon Ariel’s sister-in-law, her niece then her sister followed suit as well. Now the entire Hernandez-Perez clan has established deep roots in the community. “We go to the parks, the pools, baseball and soccer games… And we all gather for big family meals,” Luis said. “It is so important for us to have these moments with our grandchildren. We get to do life together, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Now the Hernandez’s and their extended family are thriving in Ave Maria – A Big Kind of Small Town.

UNEXPECTED PICNIC SALADS FOR YOUR SUMMER CELEBRATIONS — WHERE THE DRESSING STEALS THE SHOW

Years ago, my daughter declared that she did not like picnic salads. I had never heard the phrase picnic salads before, yet I immediately knew she was referring to the holy trinity of mayo-based salads: potato, macaroni and cole slaw.

As summer arrives, with it comes the beginning of salad season. I firmly believe that what elevates any salad from good to great is the dressing. Here are several salads to enjoy this summer. It is worth noting that the dressings are the real star and feel free to swap them around. If you’re a fan of a ranch, try it on the potato or cauliflower recipes. Love a good vinaigrette? Slather it on the broccoli salad. When it comes to any salad, you can add or subtract ingredients based on your own tastes. But I implore you. Make the dressings from scratch. Recipes are on pages 64-65.

RECIPES AND PHOTOS BY

Watermelon Panzanella

This watermelon panzanella salad is adapted from a recipe I found on the New York Times Cooking website. After making it, I thought to myself, this might be the best salad I’ve ever made. And while that may sound like a touch of hyperbole, it’s the truth. Not long after, my sister mentioned she was hosting a backyard barbecue and needed a standout salad to impress her guests—especially one friend who’s known for being a great cook. The pressure was on. That same friend took one bite and declared the salad “lifechanging.” So now, in our family, we call it

The Life-Changing Watermelon Panzanella.

— Life Hack —

Yes, this salad is a bit labor-intensive. Although it is worth every minute, for a simpler version a tomato and watermelon salad drizzled with a extra-virgin olive oil and bit of your favorite vinegar is easy and fresh. Add crumbled feta for a semi-show stopper.

Niçoise Potato Salad

This potato salad may be a lighter than the traditional versions, but it is packed with flavors and textures for an impressive side.

— Lunch Hack —

Add a few quartered jammy eggs for a satisfying lunch.

Stir in some black beans, chopped scallions, avocado and tomatoes for a colorful Tex-Mex side.

Street Corn Pasta Salad

Pretty much everyone loves corn and pasta, so why not put them together in one big bowl and take some flavor cues from Mexican street corn for a true crowd-pleaser.

Lemony Miso-Parm Broccoli Salad

Roasted Broccoli, sun-dried tomatoes, shaved Parmesan, along with toasted panko come together for a healthy and tasty alternative to the hum-drum salads of summers past.

— Dinner Hack —

Throw in some grilled chicken or shrimp for a perfect summer supper. Don’t forget the baguette.

Cauliflower & Cannellini Bean Salad

This roasted cauliflower and white bean salad is tasty, healthy, and so good it might just steal the spotlight from the main course.

— Old-School Hack —

Add a little mayo for an old fashioned potato salad vibe minus the potatoes.

Herby Ranch Slaw

Cole slaw is the ubiquitous summer cookout salad. And since just about everyone loves a creamy ranch dressing, why not kick up the flavor with a homemade herby ranch?

— Burger Hack —

Heap a pile of this slaw on a bacon-cheeseburger or a pulled pork sandwich for a sloppy bit of heaven.

Niçoise Potato Salad

Serves 5 to 7 as a side

FOR THE SALAD

2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes

1/2 pound green beans, cut into 1 - inch pieces

1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes, sliced

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

2-3 garlic cloves, grated

1-2 teaspoons granulated sugar or honey

2 tablespoons shallot, finely chopped

To make the dressing, place all the ingredients into a large jar, cover with a lid and shake to combine. Or whisk all the ingredients together in a medium bowl. When cool enough to handle, slice them into thick rounds, about 3/8-inch thick. Add

Extra, Extra (Dressing)

Most of the dressing recipes make extra more than you need. All of them will work to dress a simple green salad so having a little extra on hand in the fridge is a good thing. When adding dressing to all the salads, start small and add more as needed. Once it’s in there, you can’t take it back.

the potatoes to large mixing bowl. You can peel the potatoes if you want, but I like the skin.

Bring the water in the potato pot back to a boil and add the green beans. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the beans are crisp-tender. Drain and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking.

Add the green beans, sun-dried tomatoes, red onion, half the chives and olives to the potatoes. Drizzle 1/2 cup of dressing and toss to combine. Top with remaining chives. Serve with more dressing if desired. Serve at room temperature.

1½ teaspoons fresh thyme leaves

¼ teaspoon table salt

2 pounds watermelon, cut into 1-inch pieces (about 4 cups)

3 medium heirloom tomatoes cut into 1-inch-wide wedges (about 5 cups)

1 seedless cucumber, trimmed, halved lengthwise then sliced ¼-inch-thick (about 2 cups)

1 small red onion, sliced (about 1 loose cup)

1 cup fresh basil leaves

½ cup crumbled feta

PREPARATION

Adapted from New York Times Cooking Serves 8 to 10 as a side

FOR THE DRESSING

Yield 2 cups

½ pound piece of skin-on watermelon, seeds discarded

¼ cup granulated sugar

Kosher salt

2 garlic cloves, peeled and grated

1 tablespoon whole-grain mustard

1½ teaspoons fresh thyme leaves

½ teaspoon red-pepper flakes

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

½ cup white wine vinegar

½ cup olive oil

FOR THE SALAD

½ loaf ciabatta, cut into ½-inch cubes (about 4 cups)

2 tablespoons olive oil

To make the dressing, grate the watermelon flesh and rind (all the way down to the skin) using the coarse side of a box grater set over a bowl. You should have about 1 cup of grated watermelon. Discard the skin. Add the sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt, and stir to combine. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to develop. Then, add the garlic, mustard, thyme leaves, red pepper flakes, black pepper, vinegar, and oil. Whisk until well combined. The dressing can be refrigerated for up to 1 week.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. On a sheet pan, toss the cubed bread with olive oil, thyme, and sea salt. Spread out evenly and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until toasted.

Add the watermelon, tomatoes, cucumber, and red onion to a large serving bowl. Drain any liquid that has accumulated. Add the ciabatta cubes and half of the basil. Drizzle with ¼ cup of the dressing and season with salt and pepper. Top with crumbled feta, the remaining basil, and more dressing, if desired. Y
