The Men's Issue

Raising a Glass to the Amazing Men in our Lives
Welcome to the men's issue, where we celebrate the charismatic gentlemen who add flair and flavor to our town's landscape. This edition is dedicated to those who know that life is best lived with a touch of sophistication and a dash of wit.

In this issue, we raise a glass to individuals who embody the essence of Windsor's lifestyle. From the philanthropic endeavors of our local nonprofit champions to the smooth sophistication of our whiskey aficionados, the artistic vision of our photographers, the vibrant beats of live music in our bar scene, the allure of luxury vehicles, and the perfect pairings of summer wines, each story adds a vibrant hue to the canvas of our community.
I am blessed with an amazing husband who supports me in every endeavor, adding joy and strength to my everyday life. His unwavering encouragement is a testament to the kind of man who uplifts those around him, making our community a better place for all.
I also had the privilege of a grandfather who helped raise me, and whose wisdom and love laid the foundation for the person I am today. His guidance taught me the value of kindness, perseverance, and the importance of giving back to others.
As we honor the men of Windsor in these pages, let us also take a moment to appreciate the men in our own lives who inspire us, support us, and shape the world around us in meaningful ways.
Cheers to the remarkable men of Windsor and to the ones who hold a special place in our hearts.

BUILDING LEADERS, CHANGING LIVES

What do you call a group of fun-loving, young, professional men dedicated to building business leaders in the spirit of philanthropy? Northern Colorado United for Youth (NOCO Unify). Having diverged from another similar organization, NOCO Unify was established in 2007 and comprises of men from various professions in their twenties and thirties. Bound together by a philanthropic spirit to support at-risk youth in Larimer and Weld counties, it boasts an all-volunteer membership of 40-45 men and a ten-seat board of directors.
THE STORY OF NOCO UNIFY ARTICLE BY DANA OLSON
NOCO Unify’s leadership changes annually in alignment with its mission to cultivate leaders, and it has no paid staff members. Every dollar of the $200,000 to $400,000 annually raised funds is invested into the community through grants focusing on underprivileged youth. Funds are raised through three annual events – the Down and Derby Party, the Kids Classic Golf Tournament and their flagship event, the Suitcase Party, to which attendees arrive with bags packed for a three-day getaway via private plane awarded to the raffle winners! NOCO Unify's fundraising events are eagerly anticipated gatherings known for providing maximum entertainment,
contributing to their consistently high attendance. The running cost of these events is kept low due to sponsorships and merchant donations.
More important than these events is their mission – “to impact the lives of kids that are at risk who wouldn't have the same chance that other kids in our community have,” says Brent Duggar. “But even beyond that is what we're doing to help build leadership attributes and quality amongst our members and ourselves, the relationships created,” Josh Dollard shares.
The charity review committee meets at the end of each year to assess grant application submissions. Funds raised in
a given year support the previous year's grant recipients. Two grant types exist: Impact grants surpass $25,000 for onetime capital improvements and sustaining grants that are below this threshold. The committee prioritizes applications demonstrating sustained impact, potentially benefitting more youth. Smaller sustaining grants target singular investments, excluding operational expenses like salaries. Both grant types directly benefit youth under 20 in Larimer and/ or Weld County, requiring recipients to be 501(c)(3) organizations. NOCO Unify strives for equitable grant distribution to both counties.
“OUR MISSION IS TO POSITIVELY IMPACT THE LIVES OF AT-RISK KIDS.”
- BRENT DUGGAR

Allocation considerations include housing, food insecurity, child development and mental and physical health needs. Respite Care, Inc., Realities for Children, KidsPak of Loveland, the United Way of Larimer County, La Familia Child Development Center and the Boys and Girls Club are among the list of grant recipients.
Some of NOCO Unify’s favorite accomplishments include the purchase of a food truck bearing NOCO Unify branding for the Weld County Food Bank and the partnership with Habitat for Humanity and Jefferson High School to teach students home-building and other skills, which helps raise the graduation rate of these

students from 50% to 100%, even encouraging them onto college.
While each membership story differs, they share a common theme. Being part of NOCO Unify enriches lives beyond measure not only through their charitable achievements but also through the lasting relationships built among members. Individual growth is experienced by members as they become aware of community needs, are exposed to the lives of those less fortunate and as men of influence, humble themselves to perform menial tasks in service to the community.
Punctuated by the fun demeanor of NOCO Unify and the comradery established through planning and executing fundraising events and their meaningful outcomes, the organization provides a win-win situation for all. Cultivating business leadership and a philanthropic mindset lies at the center of NOCO Unify’s mission. That coupled with their charitable success stories qualifies NOCO Unify as a vital organization to assist the disadvantaged youth of Northern Colorado.

WE WILL BE HONORING THE DAD, GRANDPA & UNCLE OF THE YEAR

to Premium Pour From Immigrant Roots

Fourth-generation Coloradoan, Hunter Hoshiko, owner of the Windsor-based Lasso Whiskey company takes pride in the premium whiskey products they produce. From each hand-etched bottle housing the superior beverage to the handmade lassos adorning the neck of every bottle pours forth a story of boldness and ingenuity, weaving together artistry and heritage. Each bottle is touched no less than seven times before being labeled and gracing the liquor store or restaurant bar shelves - testimony to the emphasis placed on quality rather than quantity.
The story of Lasso Whiskey starts in the early 1900s in Japan when Hunter’s then-teenaged, orphaned great-grandfather stowed away on a US-bound steamship to escape Japanese imperialism. During the journey, young Katsuma was caught and had to shovel coal for food. Knowing that he would be sent back to Japan, Katsuma jumped ship in San Francisco Bay and swam to shore. Once there, he gained his citizenship and changed his name to Paul after the Apostle Paul. After Paul earned enough money from working on the railroads, he joined other immigrants who had heard of the farming opportunities in Weld County, Colorado. Subsequently, losing everything during the Great Depression, Paul forged a relationship with a local banker who, because of Paul’s reputation, helped him redeem the precious farm ground that he’d lost. The family was spared having to go to World War II internment camps because of their rural Colorado status. During this time, Hunter’s then-teenaged American-born grandfather was the only one allowed to travel outside the government-imposed thirty-mile radius restriction to sell the family’s vegetable harvest in Denver.

Acting on the innovation inherent in the Hoshiko family, Hunter’s idea to start a whiskey company was born after attending a gathering with notable political figures and business owners of Greeley at which the conversation centered around tastings of various whiskeys. Observing the bonds established, Hunter realized, “Whiskey is a tool to form relationships, be intimate with each other, and see what people value and care about. The heart and soul and essence of our product is relationships. You meet a lot of great people through whiskey, and it brings a lot of people together.” Accordingly, Hunter established Lasso Whiskey alongside his partners Dave Goldschmidt, Joe Berlin, Jordan Lockner, and Gabe Keyes. Hunter chose the name Lasso, perceiving it as the embodiment of the taming of the West. As a cowboy’s main tool, Hunter sees it as the instrument that represents unity and closeness, picturing a fireside scene of cowboys gathered after a hard day’s work enjoying a drink and each other’s company talking about their dreams and aspirations.
Lasso’s Roper Reserve and Rye Whiskey were named the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition Gold Medal Winners adding to the satisfaction Hunter feels seeing his handcrafted, single-barrel whiskey collection with top-shelf whiskeys. But most important is the spirit behind the drink. “Whiskey is not for shooting. Whiskey is for sipping and enjoying, and that’s what we try to strive for. Let’s sip, enjoy, and create a lasting relationship.”

Perfecting Your Golf Swing
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDTWhether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.

01.
Get fit for equipment.

If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
