Small Moments Make Big Memories

There’s a special kind of joy that fills a home—or a heart—when kids and pets are involved. It’s unpredictable, it’s loud, it’s messy… and it’s absolutely beautiful.

This August, we’re celebrating that sweet, unfiltered energy that kids and animals bring into our lives. Whether it’s the giggles that echo across a playground, the comforting presence of a loyal dog or the determination of a child chasing a big dream, this issue is a love letter to all of it.

You’ll feel that joy in the stories we’ve gathered—stories that speak to the heart of what makes this community so special. You’ll meet young talent whose drive will inspire you, see places where families and pets are welcome to play and connect and catch a glimpse of the everyday moments that remind us how lucky we are to call Lake Houston home.

We truly love our Lake Houston community—from the shaded Kingwood trails and peaceful fishing spots along the lake and neighborhood ponds, to the vibrant local spirit and the strong school district that brings families together. This place isn’t just where we live—it’s where we grow, explore and belong.

As a mom, I know firsthand how quickly the days pass and how important it is to stop and soak in the now—sticky popsicle hands, sandy feet, muddy paws and all. I hope this issue encourages you to pause, smile and maybe even go on a new little adventure with your favorite tiny (or furry) companion by your side.

Thank you for letting us be part of your month. Here’s to making more memories, one page at a time.

With joy,

August 2025

BRINGING BIG SMILES TO LITTLE FACES

New Playgrounds Around Town

ARTICLE BY TIFFANY HARSTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HUMBLE ISD AND LAURA DENNY
“
If we need a change of scenery, we just pick a different playground! – Emily Scott

The chatter started quietly—just a handful of excited posts in local mom groups—but soon every playground-loving parent in Humble was swapping tips, posting photos and asking, “Have you been to the new playground yet?” Moms in the area are always on the lookout for the best places to let their kids run, climb and explore. These days, Humble ISD’s new themed playgrounds are topping the list.

The reason? A colorful collection of themed playgrounds popping up across the district’s elementary campuses—part of a sweeping reinvestment through the 2022 bond. The district has committed to installing immersive, imaginatively themed playgrounds at every elementary campus. These vibrant new play spaces aren’t just fun—they’re carefully designed to support children’s development, foster inclusion and create a stronger sense of community.

Every elementary school gets its own unique theme. At some campuses, kids trek across a safari with a life-sized elephant. At others, they climb into lighthouses, hop aboard airplanes or follow colorful ground patterns that tell a story beneath their feet. Even the smallest details—like river graphics on the ground or animal footprints—are designed to spark imagination and curiosity.

Beyond school hours, these play spaces double as neighborhood hubs. Eighteen themed playgrounds are already open to the public whenever class is out, transforming summer evenings and weekend mornings into shared community time for families who might never have met otherwise.

“On weekends we like to be outside and find new things to do, always bonus points if the outdoor things are free,” says Emily Scott, local mom of four kiddos ages five to 12. “We go to the Humble ISD playgrounds three to five days a week! I absolutely love that each playground is themed; it makes it so unique and fun. If we need a fresh change of scenery, we just pick a different playground to go to!”

Scott says her kids favorites are the Eagle Springs Elementary school playground (airplane playground,

as her kids call it) and the Atascocita Springs Elementary playground (Dino playground).

Laura Denny and her three kids ages one to five are frequenters of the playgrounds as well. "We love visiting and exploring new ones as they open and frequenting our favorites time and time again. The playgrounds are enjoyable for a large age range and the themes and designs provide another source of excitement!"

Why play matters

Play isn’t just a break from learning. It is learning. Studies show that children who engage in regular unstructured play demonstrate stronger problem-solving abilities, better emotional regulation and improved academic performance.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play supports healthy brain development, helps children manage stress and enhances creativity and resilience. It’s also critical for physical health—kids who are active during the day are more likely to maintain a healthy weight, sleep better at night and build strong bones and muscles. In addition, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily for schoolaged children and outdoor play is a fun, natural way to meet that goal.

Designed for all kids

Humble ISD’s new playgrounds reflect a deep commitment to inclusion and accessibility. Each one features poured-in-place rubber surfacing for safety, equipment that can be accessed by children using wheelchairs or mobility devices and communication boards with symbols and pictures so non-verbal, speech-delayed or early-learning children can express themselves and play more independently.

“The new playgrounds in Humble ISD are an example of how play can be both inclusive and inspiring,” says Superintendent Dr. Roger Brown. “From sensory elements to accessible equipment, every playground created as part of this revitalization initiative was designed

to ensure that all students, regardless of ability, can fully participate and experience the joy of play.”

A shining example is the “Toy Town” themed playground at the district’s Early Childhood Center. Created specifically for children ages two to five, it includes age-appropriate structures that encourage exploration, imaginative play and joyful movement—all in a safe, developmentally appropriate space.

With dozens more campuses slated for upgrades, the project is reshaping childhood memories one theme at a time.

COMFORT DOGS ARE CHANGING LIVES in local schools

ARTICLE BY TIFFANY HARSTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIFFANY HARSTON PHOTOGRAPHY
Blake Shaver, Kingwood Park High School alumnus, with Comfort Dog Charlie

In classrooms and hallways across the Humble Independent School District (HISD), furry four-legged companions are helping students feel safe, seen and supported. These Comfort Dogs—therapy dogs who accompany counselors, teachers, reading coaches and special education staff to work—are doing more than just wagging their tails. They’re helping kids regulate emotions, build connections and find calm in the chaos of the school day.

The movement began when a local school counselor asked a colleague for a dog trainer recommendation. That colleague sent her to Bobbye Smith of Let’s Go!! (positive reinforcement dog training) and from that one request, a ripple effect began. Today, nearly 40 Comfort Dogs trained by Smith help a variety of students at HISD.

“It’s one of the most rewarding things I do,” Smith says. “I’ve seen the good that it does.”

Smith, a passionate dog trainer and lifelong animal advocate, is proud of her business Let’s Go!, which has grown from group classes into a full-service private training business that helps families build lasting positive relationships with their dogs.

Comfort dogs are trained for about five months in three steps. First comes private in-home obedience training (six to eight weeks), followed by public access training in high-distraction environments like Lowe’s and Petco. Finally, dogs complete on-campus training to be “proofed” for real-world environments, focusing on the 3 D’s: distance, distraction and duration.

“I take these dogs everywhere to ensure they’re confident and focused no matter the setting,” Smith says. “When you’re putting on their vest, they know they’re working. They are more

attentive, extremely obedient and observing the kids around them.”

That attentiveness has made a meaningful difference in the lives of both general education and special education students. Jamie DeBorde, a SPED program specialist at Kingwood Park High School and owner of Charlie, has seen the impact every day Charlie comes to work.

“Charlie helps kids regulate their emotions,” she says. “Sometimes they just come in and pet her and calm down— no talking needed.”

One graduated student of Kingwood Park High School, alumnus Blake Shaver, says, “I would go see Charlie whenever I could. She helped me destress when I was frustrated. Sometimes she would lay her head in my lap or put her arm over me. She just knew.”

Kristen Johnson, a counselor at Woodland Hills Elementary and owner of Comfort Dog George, experiences the same thing when George accompanies her to school. “Sometimes students don’t want to open up to me,” she said. “But after they spend time with George and pet him they start to open up. In fact, sometimes they’ll talk to him before they talk to me.”

Dogs like Charlie and George offer a calming nonjudgmental presence. Whether helping students feel more in control, more connected or more confident, their impact is unmistakable. "A dog loves you no matter what," Johnson says. "And kids know and feel that."

“I would go see Charlie whenever I could. She helped me destress when I was frustrated.”

DeBorde says Charlie isn’t trained to know students’ sensory needs—but seems to instinctively sense what’s needed. “Some kids don’t connect through peer groups or sports but they find connection and belonging through the dog."

— Blake Shaver

The success of these Comfort Dogs in schools is just one example of what’s possible when dogs are properly trained. That foundation starts with the kind of relationship-focused training Bobbye Smith champions through her work at LET’S GO!!

Charlie’s influence also builds bridges. “Kids who wouldn’t normally be caught near each other will all gather around her in the hallway,” DeBorde says. “It brings all social groups together—they all become 10-year-olds again in the best way.”

“Training your dog is not an option. It’s an obligation,” Smith says “It’s not something you start after problems show up. It’s how you prevent problems from starting."

Let's Go! offers one-on-one training with the dog and the owner. "We offer many levels of training," Smith says. "And we don't just train the dog- we train and educate families."

BUILT TO LAST

Crafting custom homes with Aggie pride, expert skill and unwavering integrity

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey’s devastation in 2017, Michael Wimberly didn’t hesitate. Armed with a background in construction and a deep-rooted desire to serve, he launched Framestead to help families rebuild what the storm took away. Just a year later, he founded TruWin to specialize in exterior renovations—doors, windows, siding and roofing.

“We treat every project like it’s our own home. That’s not just a slogan—it’s the standard.” – Mike Labbe

What began as a response to crisis has since evolved into a powerful partnership and two thriving companies led by two families with a shared vision: build better homes, build better communities and do it with heart.

Two Companies, One Mission

Framestead and TruWin are more than just sister companies—they’re two halves of a whole. Framestead delivers a wide range of high-quality services, including kitchen and bathroom remodels, whole-home renovations, flooring installation, home additions, custom spaces and exterior upgrades. The company also provides commercial construction and church renovation services, all completed with exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. TruWin complements that by handling the exterior elements of every project, from windows and doors to siding and roofing, working with trusted suppliers

like NT Windows and LP Siding to offer the newest and most vetted products. Together, they offer clients a turnkey experience.

“We didn’t set out to build companies just to swing hammers,” Wimberly says. “Our goal has always been to create a process that prioritizes people. We hold ourselves to the highest standards and believe in full transparency when it comes to pricing.”

Their formula is simple: listen deeply, plan carefully, communicate clearly and execute with craftsmanship. With every project, whether it’s a $150,000 kitchen remodel or a new custom home, the team delivers both design and execution in-house—with no guesswork, no shortcuts and no surprises.

“We treat every project like it’s our own home,” says Mike Labbe, Wimberly’s business partner and TruWin’s managing member. “That’s not just a slogan—it’s the standard.”

The Framestead Difference

Walk into a Framestead meeting and you’ll find blueprints, renderings and a few cups of strong coffee. You’ll also find homeowners being asked an unusual question: How do you actually live in this space? And more importantly how do you want to?

“We start with the human element,” Labbe says. “We want to understand how you move, where you gather, how you unwind. The goal is to improve your everyday life through design.”

This client-first approach means 3D renderings, pre-approved selection packets, real-time project tracking and a pricing model that removes the usual fog around construction costs. “We don’t push products—we guide decisions,” Labbe says. “And we keep the experience honest and collaborative.”

That commitment has earned them a loyal following—and more than a few real estate listings that proudly feature the words “Framestead remodeled.”

Family in Every Frame

The success of these two companies is deeply intertwined with the families behind them. Wimberly and his wife Julie, both Texas A&M University graduates, have four daughters. Julie recently left her career as a school counselor to join the Framestead team, where she’s leading the company’s new development initiatives in Bryan–College Station.

Labbe and his wife Roxanne, also an Aggie family, are raising four children of their own. Their oldest son, Alex, now an A&M student, spends his breaks working alongside his dad at Framestead.

“There’s no separation between work and family for us,” Labbe says. “We’re building legacies, both in business and at home.”

Growth With Intention

With the Houston area firmly established, Framestead is now expanding into Bryan–College Station, where demand for housing continues to climb thanks to the region’s explosive growth. The company is developing a portfolio of

short- and long-term rental properties, including high-density student housing and executive accommodations.

“We call them micro-developments,” Wimberly explains. “Smaller, smarter communities that are thoughtfully planned and expertly built.”

Framestead is also seeking limited partnerships from investors to support these projects. As a builder-owner, the company offers unique cost efficiencies and lower risk by controlling both construction and management under one roof.

“We’re not just handing off a blueprint—we’re sticking around,” says Wimberly. “We manage what we build.”

A Brand Built on Trust

What makes Framestead and TruWin stand out isn’t just the quality of the work—it’s the trust they’ve built. That trust began during disaster recovery efforts after Harvey and continued through subsequent floods and even the Great Freeze of 2021, when the team mobilized again to help repair and restore homes across the region.

Today, both companies run lean but strong. Their tight-knit team includes two project managers, a design and selection manager, a digital marketing lead, an accountant and a windows and doors consultant. Everyone wears multiple hats, and every team member plays a vital role in delivering the Framestead experience.

Kingwood teen makes Team USA after skating since 10 months old

By the time Emerson Study could walk, she was already gliding across the floor on roller skates. At just 10 months old, her parents put her in skates for the first time, and by 18 months, they transitioned her to inline skates. By five years old, she made the bold declaration: “I’m ready to race.” Her first competition? Regionals. She qualified for nationals.

After many years, hard work and major setbacks, Emerson’s childhood dream has come true at 17 years old—she’s made the U.S. Junior World Team for inline speedskating and

will represent the United States at the World Championships in China this September.

“It’s something we’ve dreamed about since she was tiny,” says her mom, Rachel Study, general manager of the Humble Family Skate Center, which was built by her late father and still owned by her mother, Gloria Tate. “It’s been in her blood since birth.”

Emerson has trained on and off the track her entire life, coached by her dad Jack Study, even skating full marathons by the age of 10 (the youngest at the time to ever skate a marathon). She has raced internationally in France and Portugal, trained at specialized tracks in Florida and spent years weight lifting, working and skating her way toward her goal.

But last year, she faced a major setback with a pain in her ankle that nobody could figure out. Eventually, a doctor in The Woodlands discovered a calcium deposit and after five rounds of an innovative treatment, she returned to training.

Six weeks off skates and months of uncertainty nearly derailed her path. The comeback wasn’t just physical. Emerson worked with a sport psychologist to overcome nerves that used to take over at competitions. “Last year I didn’t trust in my ability,” she says. “Now I remind myself: I’m here because I belong here.”

Through all the challenges, Emerson has become a role model. During competitions, little girls often ask for photos. And through Be-YOUnique—an online Facebook group she founded during the pandemic—Emerson encourages more than 150 girls worldwide to support each other.

“There was a moment around age 12 when I wanted to quit,” Emerson admits. “And a time last year too. But each time I felt that way and took a few days off, I have realized I truly love skating and don’t know what I’d do without it. It feels like home.”

WHISKING UP CONFIDENCE

Why Cooking with Kids is More Than Just Making Meals

ANIMAL Crackers

Ingredients:

• 1 cup and 2 tbsp white flour

• 1/4 tsp baking soda

• 1/2 cup oatmeal

• 4 tbsp honey

• 1/2 tsp vanilla

Steps:

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.

Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.

The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.

It won’t be perfect. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.

Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.

• 4 tbsp buttermilk

• 1/2 tsp almond extract

• 1/4 tsp salt

• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

• Optional: add 1/4 tsp nutmeg or cinnamon

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.

3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.

4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tbsp of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.

Enjoy!
