Watching my children grow is one of the best joys of my life. However, I constantly find myself in a struggle of wanting to go back to when they were younger, while also wishing they were older so we could go on grand adventures. My wife and I spend the evenings looking at old photos and videos and wondering where the time has gone. Then we spend the days daydreaming of all the fun things we will get to do with our boys once they are older. With both the past and future tugging at my heart, it leaves little room for the present.

At a recent men’s dinner, I found myself in many conversations where people were reminiscing and reliving their glory days. At first, it was lively—everyone shared stories with excitement and enthusiasm. But after a while, a subtle shift occurred. A sense of sadness settled over many of the men as if they weren’t just remembering the past fondly but longing to return to it.

As the conversations continued, it became clear that many of them were living in a way that revolved around nostalgia. Their present lives seemed unimportant to them. There was little excitement, little to look forward to beyond memories of what once was.

On the other hand, some seemed fixated on the future—specifically, those one or two weeks of vacation each year. For them, life felt like a countdown. They endured the days leading up to vacation with impatience and spent the days after it in disappointment, waiting for the next escape.

Whether we’re constantly looking back or always fixating on the next destination, we risk missing the journey—and the journey isn’t just the best part of life; it is life. Everything beyond this moment exists only in the mind.

Sometimes, life is a breathtaking moment on a beach, but more often, it’s the simple rhythms of daily routine. These daily routines where we spend most of our breaths are some of God’s greatest gifts! Robert Brault once said, “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”

My prayer for myself and for everyone reading this is that we learn to live each day with intention, appreciating every moment for the true gift it is.

Psalm 118:24 This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.

SOUTHWEST CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

RECENT SPORTS OR ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS:

A noteworthy track and field highlight I am proud of includes becoming an All-American track athlete for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) by running a 46.6 in the 400-meter sprint. I also recently participated in the Arkansas High School Invitational, where I took first place in the 400-meter sprint and the 4x4 relay as the anchor leg.

PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

I was blessed to be sought after by a few schools of interest known for their track and field programs, such as LSU and the University of South Carolina; however, I enjoyed my visit with Coach Smith and meeting the team at Abilene Christian University (ACU). I will continue my studies on a track scholarship at ACU.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN BALANCE:

Even though school can feel challenging, I keep trying to improve with the help of my teachers, friends, and family. Sometimes, I attempt to do things beforehand, but I am still working towards creating better study habits. One habit I have is studying from seven to ten, which has been helpful in preparing me for college. Track and field is how I have met most of my friends, and I am blessed to have found people I can connect with when I am not studying for school.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE:

While attending Southwest Christian School (SCS), I have set a personal goal to break the current National High School record in the 400-meter sprint. I also have plans to compete in the 2028 Olympics in my junior year at ACU. My overall future goal is to obtain a degree in Business.

Capturing Life’s Moments

For Granbury native Callie Hickman, photography began as precious time spent with her son, Liam, when he was still an infant.

"I don't love traditional infant photography," she admits. "The stress involved with it, especially on the mother, and getting the baby in the right position is a lot."

Callie prefers a natural, candid photo, saying, "It's the raw moments that mean motherhood to me."

So, she bought a camera and started taking pictures of Liam.

"People were like, 'Oh, these are actually really good!'" she laughs.

The encouragement helped Callie see her hobby as a legitimate opportunity, and she offered free shoots for friends and family to hone her skills before launching Callie Hickman Photography two years later.

"Granbury is small, and I had a really supportive network in that area," she explains. So, when she and her son relocated to Fort Worth to be close to her husband

Christopher's family, it was the biggest test of her skills.

"It took me a second to grow a new customer base here, but things have taken off."

Callie credits her popularity to a broad style.

"My photography is kind of moody," she says. "But I'll create a concept based on what the client likes."

After seven years in the industry, Callie has never been happier, teasing an upcoming business expansion thanks to her success.

"I hope to open a venue in the next 3-5 years," she reveals. "Texas needs a new wedding space and I have some ideas. I would be on site for photography and test my skills with event coordination."

Callie is willing to wait for the right opportunity since it's always found her before. Until then, photography remains more than a profession—it's a way to tell stories and preserve life's fleeting moments, capturing the beauty of every day with care and creativity.

MARIE WOERNER’S HOLISTIC APPROACH TO PELVIC HEALTH

ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS

We usually think of rehabbing a sports injury or surgery recovery when it comes to physical therapy. However, the field is much broader for physical therapist Marie Woerner, founder of Woerner Physical Therapy. With 17 years of experience and a passion for pelvic health, Marie has carved out a unique niche in Fort Worth, helping her patients solve challenges they may have thought they'd simply have to live with.

"I've always been fascinated by the human body and how it works," Marie shares. "But it wasn't until I saw how pelvic floor dysfunction could significantly impact someone's quality of life that I knew this was my calling." Pelvic floor therapy is an often overlooked area of healthcare that Marie was committed to shining a light on.

"I wanted to create a space where patients felt truly heard and supported," she explains. "Pelvic health issues can be sensitive to discuss, and I wanted my practice to be a safe haven where people could regain control and confidence in their bodies."

WHAT MAKES WOERNER PHYSICAL THERAPY UNIQUE?

At the heart of Woerner Physical Therapy is a holistic, patient-first philosophy. Marie and her team believe in addressing the root causes of discomfort, not just the symptoms. "We combine evidence-based practices with hands-on techniques and tailor every treatment plan to the individual," she says. This personalized approach ensures that patients not only recover but feel empowered.

The practice offers a range of services, particularly in pelvic health. From treating urinary leaks, pelvic pain, and constipation to addressing postpartum recovery and aiding men post-prostate surgery, Woerner Physical Therapy remains ready to handle diverse needs. Techniques like functional dry needling, biofeedback assessments, and the fitting of pessaries set the practice apart as a leader in its field.

WHY PELVIC FLOOR THERAPY MATTERS

Marie describes the pelvic floor as a "hammock" that supports essential functions of the body. "When those muscles are weak, tense, or uncoordinated, it can cause a range of issues—bladder leakage, pelvic pain, or even difficulty with bowel movements," she explains. Pelvic floor therapy focuses on strengthening, relaxing, and retraining these muscles for better function.

A common misconception, Marie notes, is that solving these issues is as simple as engaging the muscles through Kegel exercises.

"Sometimes, the pelvic floor muscles are too tight or tense, and strengthening them without addressing the tension can worsen the problem," she clarifies.

CONTINUED >

The benefits of pelvic floor therapy often extend beyond what patients initially expect when properly addressed. "Many people experience improved sexual health, better digestion, and relief from lower back and hip pain," says Marie. "It's truly transformative for both physical and emotional well-being."

6 REASONS TO CHOOSE WOERNER PHYSICAL THERAPY

1. Holistic Approach: Beyond addressing the muscles, Marie and her team consider factors like nutrition, stress, sleep, and overall lifestyle. "Your pelvic health doesn't exist in isolation," she explains. "We treat the whole person."

2. Personalized Care: Every treatment plan is tailored to the patient's unique needs, ensuring comfort and effectiveness at every step.

3. Advanced Techniques: The practice employs cutting-edge methods to deliver results from functional dry needling to biofeedback assessments.

4. Focus on Education: "We make sure our patients understand the 'why' behind every recommendation," Marie emphasizes. This empowers patients to take an active role in their recovery.

5. Pessary Fittings: For those experiencing pelvic organ prolapse, pessaries can offer significant relief. Woerner Physical Therapy is one of the few practices in the area to provide this service.

6. Support Across Life Stages: From pregnancy and postpartum recovery to aging-related challenges, the team is skilled at addressing concerns at every phase of life.

A LIFE-CHANGING IMPACT

The most rewarding part of Marie's work is her part in profoundly impacting patients' lives. She recalls a recent case: "I had a patient who couldn't keep up with her grandchildren because of pain and incontinence.

After working together, she not only regained her strength but also her confidence. Now, she's chasing them around the playground like she always wanted to."

ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY

Marie is passionate about spreading awareness and education around pelvic health. Woerner Physical Therapy hosts workshops and info sessions at health systems, fitness centers, and even chiropractic offices. "It's so important to give people the tools and knowledge to care for themselves," she says.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

The field of pelvic health is evolving rapidly, and Marie is excited about what's ahead. "There's a growing focus on prevention, which is fantastic," she says. By collaborating with other healthcare providers and leveraging new technologies, pelvic health professionals are addressing issues before they become significant problems.

Marie's commitment to professional growth ensures that she and her team stay at the forefront of these advancements. "Continuing education, mentorship, and patient feedback are all crucial," she notes. "They help us refine our approach and offer the best possible care."

A PARTNER IN YOUR HEALTH JOURNEY

At Woerner Physical Therapy, the focus is on creating meaningful, lasting change that improves patients' lives. "We want them to leave feeling stronger, more confident, and fully supported," Marie says.

Whether recovering from a life event, managing a chronic condition, or simply looking to improve your quality of life, Marie Woerner and her team are dedicated to helping you every step of the way.

Sometimes friendships are

the best working

relationships.

ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHET BELL PHOTOGRAPHY

Kay Genua has been in the business of making homes beautiful for over 34 years. With a business degree from Tulane, she fell into her career when she started working for an antique seller. “I’m self-taught. I’ve learned over the years that you can’t teach someone how to display a bookshelf, you can’t teach fabrics, you can’t teach how to make a room a room. That’s something you have or you don’t.”

Throughout the years, most of her clients have come through referrals or just by chance in life. With one couple in particular, meeting when their daughters attended the same school, the relationship has evolved from picking out an antique table to a 26-year-long relationship that’s seen over nine projects together in three different homes: Fort Worth, Beaver Creek, Colorado, Palm Springs, California. There have been three remodels in the Fort Worth home alone, including two kitchen remodels, building a casita, designing their daughter’s rooms, and the two most recent projects: a master bath and media room remodel.

Genua reflects on the working relationship she’s enjoyed with the couple, “it goes

“When I do something custom and come up with all the details, it’s a thrill because it’s unique to the job, and my clients are always so happy.”

back to knowing each other so well. I know their taste. And sometimes, sometimes when I’m I’m in a fabric viewing, and there’s a fabric that comes along that looks like them. I’ll get a sample and put it in their bag for the future. Without them telling me what kind of budget to stay on, I just know it.”

Kay’s long-standing relationship with clients is part of the fun, but it’s really all about finding that first fabric when it comes to the job itself. For her, it’s the beginning of her vision of what a room will become. “I start building on it, and then I can see the room coming together. I’ll usually come up with at least three different scenarios. I don’t want to present something to someone, say, take it or leave it. I want to give

them choices. I get so excited when I start pulling fabrics and find the ones that start the direction for the room, then I get excited when I present it, and then when I install, oh my gosh. It makes my day. It just makes my heart sing,” she says.

The daughters’ rooms were the very first projects all those years ago. They had been working with another designer, but after meeting with Kay, they challenged her with the remodels, with a strict request that she stays within budget. She did just that and earned herself the respect, business, and the couple’s friendship. “They give me a project; they give me a little bit of what they want at the start, and let me run with it. That’s how I do my best work—when I’m not micromanaged,” she says.

Her most recent projects—the master bath and the media room remodel—were both challenging and rewarding. In the master bath, Kay envisioned using a piece of antique furniture as the sink and vanity area, but she couldn’t find anything that fit her requirements. “Everything was too long, too little, too short to this, to that. My contractor works with an incredibly talented woodworker, so I found two antique pieces I liked, showed him the aspects I wanted, and he custom-made the vanity for me. It has all the features my client wanted and is drop-dead gorgeous,” she says.

The vanity is just one of the reasons Genua is so happy with the turnout. It’s a small space, and it was tricky to get everything the client wanted, but the combination of the vanity, new wallpaper, paint color, cabinets, and carpet was exactly what the client wanted. “When I do something custom and come up

with all the details, it’s a thrill because it’s unique to the job, and my clients are always so happy. The whole bathroom makes my heart just soar. The room is just sumptuous,” she says.

The other project Genua just recently finished was the media room facelift. She did the original remodel in 2015, and this time, it was more about refreshing the fabric on the furniture. According to Genua, they kept the wool fabric on the walls, kept the drapes, kept the artwork, kept the skirted side table, and redid everything else. One thing about Kay is that she keeps all her fabrics from past jobs. So when a client requests a facelift, she can identify which fabric was originally used and use that as a start. “It was fun making it all work,” she says.

The Joy of Tidying

HOW TO GET STARTED AND STAY MOTIVATED

Call it spring cleaning or IG envy, but this is the time of year I want everything – and I mean EVERYTHING –organized in my kitchen and closets.   While I’m pretty good at maintaining an already-tidied space, tackling the not-so-tidy closet is where I need help.  Heather Bifulco of TidyHomes came to the rescue with some great advice on getting started.

“My biggest suggestion is that you start small,” said Heather.  “Don’t aim to tackle your pantry or closet in one organizing session.  Our clients really struggle with the edit phase of the organization, but by the end they completely loosen up and start to have fun.  For example, start under the kitchen sink.  Lots of wins to be had there!”

Great tip.  Now I had a plan of attack.

Next up?  Creating categories. Organizing a space means taking out EVERYTHING and categorizing. Once that’s done, Heather always thoroughly cleans to inspire the flow of great ideas and have a fresh slate.  Consider everything from dusting the baseboards to replacing light fixtures to adding a coat of paint to change up and freshen the new look.

rid your home of things that don’t work, things you have a better version of, things you never use and things that no longer make you happy,” says Heather.  The key word here is ‘things.’  “Whether it’s an old umbrella or a new pair of rain boots,” she said, “the ask is the same.”  Deep breath.  That green hat I’ve loved forever?  Keep.  Three versions of the same jacket?  Donate.  The pile of single gloves?  Toss.  Once I got going, it became easier and faster to make those decisions.

Once you can actually see everything you’re keeping, you want what you use most often within arm’s reach. Seasonal items can go on higher or lower shelves.  The sweet spot of shelving is dedicated to what I need to grab daily.   Heather found beautiful baskets and bins that make me happy just to look at them.  “Finding containers you love will provide so much motivation toward completing an organization project,” she said.

Now for the fun (and sometimes hard) part: touching every item in the category piles and asking myself whether something actually serves a purpose.   “This is the time to

The whole goal at the end of organizing is to have no clutter.  That’s right, this isn’t an attempt to harness clutter, but to eliminate it entirely.  That being said, some of us live with little people who contribute to clutter every day.  Heather’s advice on that subject turned out to be life-changing.  She suggests creating ONE drop zone, not several.

“My biggest suggestion is that you start small. Don’t aim to tackle your pantry or closet in one organizing session.”

Finally she revealed her most important tip.

“There are no exceptions to this,” she admits. “Labeling is the key to maintenance and to eliminating the pain of not being able to find something.  We have so many beautiful options for labeling now that it shouldn’t even be a question.  Label.  Always label.”

Great advice from the top of my closet to the bottom. This is why I’ve already scheduled Heather to help me organize the entryway and kitchen! @tidystylehome

At MRC Stevenson Oaks, our philosophy is that no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, life is about continuing to grow. We fight back on thieves like loneliness, helplessness and boredom. We resolve to make every day one that confirms the seven domains of well-being through identity, growth, autonomy, security, connectedness, meaning and joy.

“Stevenson Oaks means so much to me because when I was very sick they rallied around me like a bee rallies around honey. I cannot believe how uplifted–how loved–I felt. I know the people were genuinely concerned about me. Here, life at Stevenson Oaks is absolutely wonderful.”

smart SWEETS

The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

Combine:

• 1 cup wheat flour

• 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled

• 2 cups oats

• 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 tablespoons chia seeds

• 2/3 cup raisins

• Optional: chocolate chips as desired

• Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa.

Add this mixture slowly to combine:

• 2 eggs

• 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter

• 1/2 cup honey

• 1 banana

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

Quinoa BREAKFAST Bars

Frozen PEANUT BUTTER Bites

Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each.

2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice.

3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite.

4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy!

Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.*

These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.

Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed.

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup milk

• 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder

• 1/4 cup maple syrup

• 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter)

• 1 cup almond flour

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

• Chocolate chips as desired

Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.

Navigating the Fort Worth Real

EXPERT KATE ASAY, OWNER AND FOUNDER OF ASAY GROUP REAL ESTATE, WANTS YOU BUYING AND SELLING LIKE A PRO

Fort Worth’s real estate market continues to evolve in the wake of election season, interstate migration, and the lasting effects of a national emergency just five short years ago. Local experts Kate Asay, broker and founder of Asay Group Real Estate (AGRE), and Melanie Davis, her colleague and longtime friend, know what it takes to succeed, sharing over 30 years of industry insight and nine tips for success from a palatial home near Rivercrest Country Club, a listing the duo sold to Randy and Demie Angelocci a short time ago.

The two first connected in 2011, and their complementary skills made them a formidable team and fast friends. When Asay launched her brokerage after 18 years in the industry, Davis never questioned joining her.

“She definitely brings out the best in me,” Asay says, warmly studying Davis from across a table in the home’s expansive kitchen.

Fort Worth real estate saw growth in 2024, with a reported .5% increase

in sales in 2024 compared to the previous year. Asay attributes this to a slowly growing inventory, which is edging closer to a balanced market.

“We’re at 3 months of inventory now, moving toward the ideal five to six months,” she explains. This gradual stabilization gives buyers more options. However, interest rates remain a concern for some prospective buyers.

“Our clients are currently seeing rates in the sevens, and I am hopeful that the rates will lower this year, but only time will tell, which may hold some people back,” Asay says. She encourages clients to consider their long-term goals when assessing their situation. “If a buyer can handle the monthly mortgage payment, it may be worth it for some buyers to go ahead and buy knowing they might refinance later.”

The Fort Worth market reflects broader national trends, with steady home prices and continued demand for spacious properties in areas like Tarrant and Parker counties. Asay explains how the area’s depleted inventory prompted a buyer shift towards new builds, helping recalibrate the market.

“It’s a good time to be a buyer,” she says. “A few years ago, it was very stressful for clients. There were a small handful of houses to show them, and they had to move quickly to close. More houses mean buyers have more time to really assess which property best fits their needs.”

With the market ripe for activity, Asay and Davis share battle-tested words of wisdom to save Fort Worthians time and money.

REAL ESTATE

Asay explains how a realtor’s early entry into the buying or selling process can maximize success.

“It establishes your budget and gets you on the right foot,” says Asay. Early discussions ensure clarity on affordability and, if you’re a seller, a renovation or cleaning budget, making the process smoother and preventing unnecessary steps at the start. A realtor also develops a data-driven game plan for clients that includes connecting them with other experts in their network, like lenders, to explore creative financing options like rate buy-down programs.

START A CONVERSATION WITH A REALTOR BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ESTABLISH YOUR EXPECTATIONS

“Realistically looking at your budget is important. Sometimes that means expecting more or less house than you thought,” Asay explains. “We have many lenders in our network to help sort through financials and break down options.” Understanding financial realities at the onset helps clients avoid heartbreak or gives them time to restructure their spending to align with their desired lifestyle.

DATE THE RATE, MARRY THE HOME

“If you find your dream home when rates are higher than you’d like, remember you can refinance later,” Asay advises. Historically, rates fluctuate, so think long-term and collaborate with a lender.

APPROPRIATELY PRICE YOUR HOME

Over or under-pricing can be a costly mistake.

“We’re thoughtful with pricing strategies,” says Asay. “It’s collaborative and data-driven, ensuring sellers position their homes for success from the start.”

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Asay ranks cleanliness over improvements as the biggest bang for your buck, stressing the importance of decluttering and deep cleaning before your home hits the market.

“Clean homes signal to buyers that it’s been well-maintained,” she says. “Pre-pack your home. You can put boxes in the garage if there’s still space to walk around. Otherwise, a temporary storage unit is best. And don’t forget to wash the windows!”

Selling a home you’ve lived in for years can be emotional. Asay urges sellers to view their property as a product. “We’re not giving any advice we wouldn’t give to ourselves. Our goal is to maximize your offer.”

“We provide clients with monthly market reports to keep them informed,” says Asay. Staying educated and patient allows buyers and sellers to adapt to changing conditions without sweating the small stuff.

BONUS TIP: BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING

Life happens, and plans change.

“Who could have predicted a pandemic?” Asay says. “In those times, having a trusted professional by your side is so important. Whether you work with Melanie or me or need us to recommend someone else, our goal is for you to have a good experience.”

The Local Event Planner Who Is So Much More Than Organized

Event planner Kristen McCurdy comes from a big family, and for her, birthday parties and holiday gatherings were magical moments as a child. “As I was growing up, my mom did everything herself. She’s a great DIYer; it was before Pinterest was a thing. Nothing was ever stressful and always really fun. I got used to being around people, helping in the kitchen, preparing food and it was always amazing.”

And while she admits she sort of fell into event planning, McCurdy knows that part of her career choice is rooted in those family memories.

When she turned eighteen, McCurdy started helping friends in the event industry as an assistant, with the catering, or as a server for extra money and found she really enjoyed it. She also had some friend marry young and offered to help plan and organize their weddings. “I just started doing it randomly. They would pull stuff out and I would say ‘I can help you with that,”” she says. At 25, she moved to Georgia, where an event manager friend got her a job at the Carl House in Auburn. Upon her return to Texas, she found a job as a private event planner for a family. “I planned all their birthdays, and they had a white party every July, and they had a big Halloween party, one for adults and one for children. And so I guess that’s where I ended up planning full time, handling all those events of my own, and working with other vendors.”

McCurdy didn’t go out on her own until 2016. At the time, she was working for an interior designer and would plan all the business events, and on the side, do her bosses’ daughter’s weddings, baby showers, and other parties. And surprisingly, it was her boss who encouraged her to go contract only. “She said she believed that if I wanted to start my own business, I could. Looking back, how cool of her to suggest that, knowing she would be losing an employee? She was just looking out for the well-being of people, more than her company, and more than just the bottom line. That’s really what propelled me to start my own business,” McCurdy says.

And while her experience with interior design does help a bit, it’s her organizational skills and people skills that McCurdy says help the most. “You need to be able to adapt, be flexible, and work with any personality. So it helps if you’re just a personable person. You’ve got to be able to fit in many boxes,” she explains.

When asked why having an event planner is important for functions, McCurdy brings up the obvious things like organizational skills, budget planning, and communication, but as she sees it,

the most valuable asset she brings to the table is her industry connections.

“Anyone good with organizational skills and time and budget management can plan something, but there are times when things come up, dates get confused, or something gets double-booked, and you have to think on the fly. And sometimes you need that reservoir of vendors in your back pocket that you can call. And if they can’t help you, they know someone else who might. In Fort Worth, our network of vendors is such a tight-knit community, and everyone wants to help each other. No one’s out for themselves,” she says.

Kristen McCurdy does plenty of weddings but can plan anything—baby showers, galas, birthday parties, dinner parties, festivals, and anything from large to small gatherings. “The quirkier, the better. I love a unique event, something that’s out of the ordinary. Give me a good theme, and I’ll run with it,” she says.

When asked what she loves about event planning, McCurdy immediately answered: “Definitely the people you get to meet along the way. I think the moment you bring the client’s vision to life and the moment you get to witness that, there’s nothing like bringing them into the space for the first time, they’re seeing everything come together, and you get to watch their face shift and everything clicks for them. It’s one of those wow moments. Experiencing that with them is probably one of the most rewarding things for any event— especially weddings.
