STYLE + BEAUTY SHE’S A GEM: MEET MYRANDA

LIFE + CULTURE PRE-FALL FASHIONS

ARTS + CULTURE STUNNING COSTUMES

Welcome to the Style Issue ...

I hope this letter finds you happy and full of creative spirits.

Have you ever coveted Carrie Bradshaw’s closet, binge-watched Project Runway, and/or watched The Devil Wears Prada multiple times? You know style is everywhere, and it’s not limited to the clothes we wear or the furnishings in our homes. It's all around us and it’s how we express true selves.

When I think back to the beginning of my personal fashion style, my high school days come to mind. I was highly involved in DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) and a large part of the club focused on fashion. I made a scrapbook of Vogue magazine cutouts with all the famous designers, and my final project for DECA was about French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.

I loved Guess jeans, Gucci, Esprit, Ralph Lauren, Reebok hightops, tulip stacking rings, L’Oreal lipstick color 305, Forenza sweaters (which I wore backwards with the V in the back), and my very first gateway fashion drug, a cream-colored rectangular Coach handbag.

For this style issue, we meet Myranda North Molina, who made and sold her first piece of jewelry at age 12 and continues creating beautiful custom masterpieces for every occasion. Joshua Franco, a leading figure at Saks Fifth Avenue, shares the latest trends in the fall fashion forecast. Gergana Slavova, co-owner of NRG Ballroom, takes us into the world of competitive ballroom dance fashion. And Dr. Aubrey Young shows that a great smile, at any age, never goes out of style. Plus more!

Let’s celebrate and embrace our personal style. Cheers to being uniquely you!

Sincerely,

September 2024

CELEBRATED JEWELER MYRANDA NORTH MOLINA OPENS THE BOUTIQUE MYRANDA FINE JEWELRY

Myranda North Molina was 12 when she made and sold her first pieces of jewelry, silver and vintage bead earrings along with a gold chain.

Ever since, the veteran jeweler and designer has honed her first love for all things precious and pretty into a successful career and reputation as one of the region’s best.

ARTICLE BY GEORGANN YARA PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIE J. PHOTO

But after decades of being in every facet of the industry, Myranda found herself in new territory this year as a sole business owner when she opened Myranda Fine Jewelry, which has two locations.

“After I jumped off the cliff and realized I don’t have a parachute, I knew if I’m going to do it, it’s got to be done right,” Myranda says. “As a woman entrepreneur, it takes serious mental strength to move out on your own.”

But being on her own never meant being alone. Myranda credits the team who has been with her for years and who continues to be by her side with her new venture, as well as the local community that wholeheartedly supported her when her shop debuted in January.

“Their love and support have given me strength,” she says.

Myranda Fine Jewelry showcases her expertise in new, custom, and recreation of heirloom pieces, as well as her specialties, especially in bridal.

All work is done by Myranda’s team. Each piece of jewelry is backed by a lifetime guarantee at no extra charge. Each piece also comes with a certified appraisal.

“We take so much pride in our product that we build it, and we back it,” she says.

Myranda is also launching her own line, Myranda Designs—a bridal collection, with both natural diamonds and laboratory diamonds. She also offers a vintage collection, which is something clients have been clamoring for.

Myranda has created a space where people can peruse and purchase exquisite pieces in a welcoming, non-stuffy environment.

She proudly identifies as “a jeweler for everyone,” and whether dealing with a $400-$500 piece or one that extends into the high six figures, she ensures everyone gets the same VIP treatment.

The shop was immediately successful, with Myranda experiencing a greater response than ever.

“I never thought this could be possible,” she says.

Myranda’s calling was evident when she was just a child. She and her sister often played house at the Valley home of her grandmother, who made clothing, owned a clothing store, and had a costume

jewelry collection that Myranda loved.

“I’d pretend to be the jeweler. I told my sister, ‘No, you have to be the teacher or the banker,’” Myranda says with a laugh, referring to her sister Monica Soltero, who is, along with Hayden Schweitzer, her senior designers, head of operations, and her right and left hand.

Myranda learned from her grandmother how to make jewelry. She spent every dollar she had on beads, one of her earliest obsessions, and let her creativity flow.

As a kid, Myranda’s family struggled financially. Making jewelry and staying with her grandmother was a bright spot.

“ WE’RE ON YOUR JOURNEY. THE RELATIONSHIPS ARE WHAT MEANS THE MOST.”

“When I went to live with my grandmother, it was a great escape to make something beautiful, and always create sunshine,” she says.

As a very young adult, Myranda also became interested in buying estate jewelry. A true people person at heart, this allows her to connect with others on a level that goes beyond how many dollars a piece can fetch.

The family of a woman who passed away was able to afford a nice funeral and cover medical costs because Myranda facilitated the sale of her jewelry.

Another client was left with two children and only $200 in her bank account

after a divorce. She owned a beautiful and valuable ring and wanted to sell it to help generate income and approached several jewelers before finding Myranda. Instead of quickly eyeing the ring and offering a dollar figure, Myranda spent the next two hours getting to know her and helping her to focus on the positives in her life.

The conversation ended with Myranda paying top dollar for her ring, which amounted to 30% greater than the other jewelers the woman had seen. Today, the woman is happily married, and she and her new husband are dear friends and clients.

And on the occasions when a transaction isn’t a fit for Myranda, she does what she can to make it happen with another buyer.

“I don't want to take your item and make a buck. I want to know the situation and how I can help you,” Myranda says. “It’s one of my favorite things to do besides design.”

But just purchasing pieces from estates themselves aren’t the only investment for Myranda. She sees them as just the eye-catching surface of a deeper connection rooted in her passions for jewelry, people, and doing what she can to make lives better.

“Jewelry is just a part of it. We’re on your journey. The relationships are what means the most,” Myranda says. “When you put passion first and money second, you build a successful empire because you’re doing it for the right reasons.”

Myranda Fine Jewelry specializes in design, engagement rings, anniversary bands, wedding rings, earrings, bracelets, vintage, laboratory and natural diamonds, and all gemstones.

Myranda’s upbringing has sparked a desire to constantly give back. Since her opening in January, Myranda Fine Jewelry has given back a large percentage of her profits to several local nonprofits for their fundraising efforts. She is also the chair of the Chandler Service Club debutante ball 2025 and serves as a mentor for young women.

“If I can do this, you can do this,” Myranda says of her message. MyrandaFineJewelry.com

FASHION FORECAST

An Almost Pre-Fall Moodboard—Favorite Summer Trends to Carry Through Until Fall

As we welcome cooler evenings and the days become shorter, Tempe welcomes a fresh wave of fall fashion trends. This season, the focus is on comfort, bold statements, and a hint of nostalgia. Here are six trends to keep an eye on.

Michael Kors
Gucci
Michael Kors
“Incorporate matcha into your wardrobe through cozy sweaters, elegant dresses, or as a pop of color in an accessory.”

SLEEK STRIDES

Wide-legged trousers and palazzo pants are taking center stage this fall. These voluminous pants provide both style and comfort, perfect for Tempe’s mild autumn weather. Pair them with a fitted top or go for a loose, oversized sweater for an effortlessly chic look.

RELAXED & REFINED

Think tailored joggers, sleek knitwear, and soft blazers. This trend allows you to stay comfortable while looking polished. It’s all about achieving that perfect balance between comfort and sophistication.

PLAYFUL PALETTE

Gone are the days of perfectly coordinated outfits. This fall, embrace the beauty of mismatched colors. Experiment with bold, contrasting hues and unexpected combinations. Pair an orange skirt with a teal

blouse or mix pastels with vibrant shades. The key is to have fun and let your personality shine through your wardrobe.

LAVISH LEATHER

Leather has a lush twist this season. Glossy leather jackets, waxed skirts, and pants are making waves, adding a fun edge to your fall outfits. In Tempe’s cooler evenings, a relaxed leather bag can be the perfect accent to elevate your look.

MATCHA MOODS

Calming, earthy tones of matcha green are a standout trend this autumn. From deep forest greens to softer sage hues, these shades evoke a sense of tranquility and nature. Incorporate matcha into your wardrobe through cozy sweaters, elegant dresses, or as a pop of color in an accessory.

BOHO’S BACK

The bohemian style is making a comeback, bringing a signature free-spirited eclectic vibe, but with a simplistic approach. Look for column-style dresses, fringe, soft neutral tones, and subtle mix-matched patterns. Layered jewelry and your favorite stack of rings complete the boho look, perfect for Tempe’s laid-back yet exciting nightlife.

This fall, fashion is all about embracing bold styles, comfortable elegance, and a touch of antique flair. Whether it’s for date night at a chic restaurant, taking a weekend stroll through the art markets on Mill Avenue, or enjoying a midday pickme-up at your favorite coffeehouse, these trends will ensure you stay comfortable, relaxed, and elevated for any occasion.

GERGANA SLAVOVA ON BALLROOM DANCE, RAISING MONEY, AND—OF COURSE—THOSE FABULOUS COSTUMES

Gergana Slavova, who grew up in Bulgaria, was just 7 years old when she began dancing. By 11, she was competing along with her partner, Nikolay Kralev.

Soon, they were placing in competitions all over Bulgaria and Eastern Europe—and placing in the top three.

“Ballroom is one of the best things,” Slavova says. “It teaches you how to work as a team with your dance partner. You can compete solely, but most people have a partner. At such a young age it teaches you that you need to work with another person and also how to communicate and form friendships.”

OPENING NRG BALLROOM

Slavova and Kralev definitely formed a friendship, as they now both live in Tempe and are owners—along with Slavova’s husband Radomir Pashev—of NRG Ballroom

“I always wanted to have my own dance center. That was one of my dreams in high school,” Slavova says. “With looking to the future, it was a natural progression. I love organizing events, so running a business was very natural. All three of us work very well together; we know our strengths and weaknesses. So, we decided to open NRG.”

They opened the studio at the southeast corner of Elliot and Rural roads in 2018 (it was under a different name and ownership prior), offering private and group lessons for both kids and adults, social dances, workshops, and more.

“At NRG Ballroom, we strive to create an environment where energy equals passion, where effort erases excuses, and where every person can find the dancer within,” Slavova explains.

“We strive to create an environment where energy equals passion, where effort erases excuses, and where every person can find the dancer within.”

CREATING THE LOOK

Beyond technique, ballroom dance is also about your look. In fact, it is one of the few sports where look is very important, Slavova says.

“You don’t get judged on it, but the more you are put together, the judges also perceive how much you care about your dancing,” she explains, saying that hair and makeup are also important.

As for costumes, she says they are based first on physique.

“Dancers are all different in height and shape, so you have to wear things that will help you look better on the floor and when you move,” Slavova shares. “So, for example, I am 5’ 9” and my waist is not well defined, so I have to choose styles that give more of a defined waist, like a belt or a wavy shape. Dancers who have great legs tend to go for the shorter styles. Other people like to exaggerate with a high cut-out.”

Slavova shares that her favorite dress for ballroom dancing (waltz, tango, foxtrot) that she’s worn is actually her current one.

“I’m not a pink person, but I decided to go for it,” she shares. “It's a beautiful pale pink. It has a lot of 3-D effects, and the skirt is pleated. It looks very glamorous and rich.”

Her favorite dress for Latin was one of her first dresses, which she wore in Bulgaria. It was white with bronze and gold, and had the sequin fringes which were popular at the time—and which also made noise when the person wearing them moved.

“I had the fake, bright orange nails and it was just the look,” she says. “I’m blonde and it was quite striking on the floor.”

DANCING WITH THE STARS AND THE PHOENIX FALL FESTIVAL DANCESPORT

Back in 2007, just a year after moving to the U.S., Slavova, Kralev, and Pashev, on behalf of NRG, became involved with Dancing with the Stars for the Arizona Kidney Foundation.

The event is held yearly, typically in March, and it is a fundraiser for the Arizona Kidney Foundation. It pairs local celebrities with a professional dance teacher, and they perform a dance together briefly at the event.

Slavova works with the celebrity, picking a song, creating the choreography, and practicing. NRG also donates lessons to the charity.

NRG is also involved with the Phoenix Fall Festival Dancesport, where those passionate about Latin and ballroom dance, from kids to adults, compete. The next event, which will be held Oct. 12-13 at Wild Horse Pass Resort, marks their third year organizing it. The first day includes workshops, an evening gala, and a social dance, and the second day is the competition and VIP party.

PASSIONATE ABOUT DANCE

For Slavova, dance is a part of life. And with NRG, the three owners hope to share that passion with the community.

“You want to exercise and have fun? LET’S DANCE. Tired of sitting at home? LET’S DANCE. You want to try something new and different? LET’S DANCE,” says Slavova.

A GREAT SMILE—AT ANY AGE—IS A PERFECT ACCESSORY

ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIFESTYLE MEDIA AND BRANDING
“Beautifully aligned teeth create not only an aesthetic smile, but a healthy bite.”
Dr. Aubrey Young

Orthodontics may be considered a rite of passage for many teenagers, but it can also be beneficial to adults.

In fact, Dr. Aubrey Young, founder and owner of Young Orthodontics, says her adult patients currently outnumber kids, about 55 to 45 percent.

“My oldest patient started her treatment when she was 84,” Dr. Young says.

Whether adults want to straighten crooked teeth, fix teeth that have shifted since they had orthodontics as teens, or a number of other reasons, Dr. Young says she and her team at her East Valley practice are ready and able to help.

Dr. Young also answered some common questions about orthodontics in adults.

HOW CAN ORTHODONTICS HELP ADULTS WITH THEIR JAW HEALTH?

As we age, we lose volume in our jaw bones. As that happens, our back teeth tip toward the tongue and our front teeth become more crowded. When our back teeth tip toward our tongue, it changes the direction that our chewing force is distributed to the roots of the teeth. This can cause premature wear of the chewing surfaces of the teeth, gum recession, and even notching of the teeth at the gumline. When our teeth do not fit together properly, it can also cause TMJ discomfort. Orthodontics can help treat these issues.

“...many patients say that they felt like they had a mini-facelift during their orthodontic treatment...”

CAN ORTHODONTICS HELP ADULTS WITH THEIR SLEEP?

During orthodontic treatment, we increase the width of the dental arch and upright the back teeth. When we do this we create more real estate for the tongue to move forward in the mouth and this increases the airway size in the back of the throat. Think of the teeth as a gate that is holding your tongue back. The smaller the gate the less room there is for the tongue and the farther back in the airway it goes. When we make the gate bigger the tongue immediately uses the new space and is able to move forward in the mouth. Sleep apnea is caused by a restriction in the airway spaces behind the nose or behind the throat or both. Orthodontics in adults primarily focuses on increasing the size of the airway in the back of the throat.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE AESTHETIC BENEFITS OF ORTHODONTICS?

When we upright and widen the dental arch, a beautiful smile is created where you can see teeth from the corner of the lip to the corner of the lip with no black airspaces on the sides. Beautifully aligned teeth create not only an aesthetic smile, but a healthy bite. The other beautiful result of increasing the width of the dental arch is that we restore the underlying bony structure that is the framework for our soft tissue. This gives more support to our soft tissues, specifically in the mid-face. We have had many patients say that they felt like they had a mini-facelift during their orthodontic treatment because of this support to the soft tissue of the face.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ORTHODONTIC OPTIONS THAT ADULTS CAN CHOOSE FROM?

The majority of my patients choose our Spark aligners. These aligners are very similar to Invisalign, but have a newer technology in the plastic which allows for the really broad smiles and healthy airways

to be created. In our office, we use Damon braces. Damon braces can be metal or porcelain if a tooth color bracket is preferred.

CAN ADULTS WHO HAD ORTHODONTICS AS TEENAGERS SOMETIMES NEED IT AGAIN?

Adults can absolutely be treated for a second time, and this is very common. In the past it was a common practice to tell your orthodontic patient to wear their retainers for a couple of years after treatment. Many patients who were treated as a child followed this recommendation and have had relapse in tooth position. Without retainer wear, teeth will and do shift over time. Our retainer protocol after treatment in our office is nighttime for life to protect your investment in your smile, healthy bite, and healthy airway for your lifetime.

FOR ADULTS WHO ARE FEELING NERVOUS, OR UNSURE, OR MAYBE THAT THEY ARE “TOO OLD” TO HAVE ORTHODONTICS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM TO REASSURE THEM?

I would encourage them to visit our office for a complimentary consultation so we can explain the condition of their teeth, bite, and airway health, and explain options for making a positive change for both their dental and systemic health. With the new technology in orthodontics, the process has become much more comfortable than ever before.

HOW LONG DO ADULTS USUALLY END UP HAVING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?

The average treatment time for my adult patients is 18 months. There are some more in-depth surgical cases or restorative cases that can take longer, but 18 months is very typical.  SmileStraight.com
