Summer’s here, and the time is right. There’ll be swingin’ and swayin’, and… records playing!
It’s just an invitation across the nation, a chance for folks to meet. Oh—it doesn’t matter what you wear… just as long as you are there. All we need is music: sweet, sweet music.
Thanks to the elemental songwriting talents of Marvin Gaye, Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Hunter, “Dancing in the Street” celebrates its 60th birthday in 2024 with an astonishing array of artist recordings, from Martha and the Vandellas to this crazy-diverse list of The Mamas & The Papas, The Kinks, David Bowie with Mick Jagger, Grateful Dead, Van Halen, and countless others. Rolling Stone rated it #2 in its “Best Summer Songs of All Time” list; I hereby move for its promotion.
We need a “Dancing in the Street” challenge: everybody, yes I mean you, crank up YouTube and search for any obscure “DITS” cover. You’ll be amazed how so many bands of such different styles/genres/orientations/persuasions grab this classic tune and ride it roughshod into yet another beautiful summer’s sunset. Unbreakable. Confident. Unstoppable. From the Angel City Chorale’s 200-some voice choir with full orchestra bringing-it-big from LA, to The Struts’ perfectly-cheesy delightfully-overchoreographed punk-pop suburban-street production video, to the cheeky al fresco semi-acoustic Rainbow Girls cover filmed in the middle of a country road (with cows, friends and dogs as background dancers until an approaching car’s horn brings the recording to its abrupt coda). It’s the bomb. It’s the balm. It’s… summer

When I agreed to observe Marty Jalove’s improv networking group at Buffalo Creek Brewing in Long Grove I planned to simply sit apart from the group and quietly take notes. Boy, was I wrong. The group’s enthusiasm quickly swept me up into being a fully engaged participant.
Jalove is a business coach and owner of Master Happiness who stands out in a crowd in a trademark “What’s Your Bacon” shirt. So why improv marketing?
“Networking is a way to find meaningful and memorable connections for work or life,” Jalove said. Typically, we “chat about the weather, sports, or perform our elevator pitch to gracious nods from the other participants doing the same thing.” In short, it’s a hard thing to do for many people.
While doing improv, networkers “travel an emotional journey together, usually from apprehension to enlightenment or hesitation to hilarity.” He believes it is this shared experience that provides for deeper, more memorable connections.
Jalove, a Lake Zurich resident, studied improv for six years in a studio setting and performed
onstage before a variety of audiences. At first, he was nervous, felt out-of-place and nearly quit. “I realized that my anxiety came from trying to impress others instead of helping others succeed,” Jalove said. “Once I grasped the ‘Yes, and’ principle I gained confidence and learned how to help others look good. I have been in Sales and Management Training for more than 30 years. Nothing outperforms the power of improv.”
Participants in his sessions can expect to improve their communication and collaboration skills. To be successful an improv group learns how to listen and enhance what others are doing and saying. “The team moves in synchronicity, working as one, and when that happens it is a beautiful thing,” Jalove said.
Improv Networking at Buffalo Creek Brewing is scheduled for July 11 and 25, August 8 and 22, and September 5 and 19. All sessions start at 7 pm. Learn more at MasterHappiness.com/improv.
of the House in Mississippi, to governors, Special Olympics kids, inner city youth, normal folks and local officials like today… Yesterday we played pickleball pro Dave “The Badger” Weinbach in Wisconsin… so [in raising money for local causes] we’re telling 48 great stories in 48 states across the country, all a little bit different, and we’re so glad to be here.”
Two Lake Zurich residents, Mayor Tom Poynton and Masato Suzuki (D&J Bistro owner and chef, a/k/a “The Pickleball Ninja”) teamed up to represent Illinois to help accomplish a Guinness World Record: fastest time to play a game of pickleball in each of the lower 48 states.
Originally from Illinois and now living in Florida, Dean Matt got interested in pickleball during retirement. A lifelong pilot, he challenged himself to see how many games he could play, flying to new places along the way. Soon, he and a friend masterminded the “48-48-48” challenge of playing 48 matches in 48 states in less than 48 days. (Lake Zurich was stop #27 on the journey.)
With a world record in sight, Matt mapped out the entire journey at the pun-worthy website Mucho-Dean-Aero.com/the-pickleball-challenge . Said Matt at the local event, “We’re playing all sorts of great people, from the Speaker
USAPickleball.org defines pickleball as a fun, friendly paddle sport, combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, created in 1965 by three dads in Washington state for their bored kids, leveraging handmade equipment and simple rules. It’s now one of the fastest growing sports in the country. The Association of Pickleball Professionals reports that 36.5 million people played at least once in 2022; over 8.5 million played eight or more times.
Raceway Car Wash in Lake Zurich and Arlington Heights co-sponsored the Illinois event on May 17 at the Foglia YMCA in Lake Zurich. Lake Zurich Raceway owner Rich Baader and Matt were college roomates; Baader helped find a venue for the match, secured a Lake Zurich team, and worked to raise awareness for the local charities who each received $3,000: Emmaus House of Hospitality and A Safe Place. Emmaus House works to serve neighbors in financial food crisis by distributing food Sunday evenings in the basement of St. Francis de Sales, in addition to providing items for children, such as diapers, formula and shoes. Located in Zion, A Safe Place provides free services, counseling and education to victims of domestic abuse and human trafficking in Lake County, with a goal to educate all in creating safe and healthy communities. Baader was happy to both help his friend Matt and support the two charities.
Before the challenge, Poynton wasn’t a big pickler. “I’d only played once,” he said, “but I was willing to learn.” He knew Chef Suzuki was an accomplished player, and reached out. Before the match, the two practiced regularly. “He’s been very patient with me; I have black and blue marks on my chest to prove it from the balls he’s nailed me with that I should have returned but didn’t,” Poynton confessed.
The vigorously-played match was appreciated by a small but enthusiastic crowd, pickleball fans and charity-supporters alike; three games were played, with Poynton, Suzuki, Matt, and Matt’s travelling pickleball partner Rod Anderson changing teammates after each game. Fox 32 News documented the event for its evening newscast.
Regarding pickleball’s burgeoning popularity, Baader affirmed, “Pickleball is great; almost anyone can play, from a very high-level athlete to an 80-year-old.”
Ready to try pickleball yourself? Poynton encouraged residents to look at local park district classes or find courts near home, mentioning that in a pinch folks could even get started with a set of “house rules” and a $2 bright yellow ball on a friendly neighbor’s driveway.
It’s summertime and the living’s easy which means more time to head over to a favorite watering hole or try someplace new. There’s a wealth of options nearby, and some iconic venues for the more adventurous.
Overlooking Lake Zurich is Sunset Pavilion, built by the village and staffed by Scoreboard Bar & Grill, a go-to venue for leisurely sipping, small bites and great sunset views of a sparkling lake.
Summerfest in Milwaukee is the granddaddy of large-scale North American music festivals. For 55 years Summerfest has sprawled along Lake Michigan, walking distance from downtown with 12 stages of non-stop musical entertainment.
Lindy’s Landing on Bangs Lake has consistently provided good eats, a great drinks menu, weekend live entertainment and views of the water. There’s probably something to like for just about everybody at this venerable Wauconda institution.
Long known as the biggest Happy Hour in the Midwest, Wrigley Field’s bleachers have more food and drink options with great views of all the action on the field (and in the stands).
In Cary on Highway 14 at the corner of Three Oaks Road is Spirit Water, the brainchild of Tim Kovac, the man behind “Not Your Father’s Root Beer.” His latest venture is dedicated to brewing AND distilling.
Around here we like our lake views. Wauconda’s reimagined Side Lot has a beer garden that catches Bangs Lake breezes along with a full menu that appeals to “foodies” (as profiled in our June issue). Their expansive, family- and pet-friendly (note the dogs settling in) outdoor space features cozy seating, an outdoor fireplace, and frequently-performing favorite local musicians.
Long Grove’s Buffalo Creek Brewing has established itself as a must-visit venue for the beer cognoscenti. Most of the beer is brewed in the German style, and the taproom suits that theme perfectly, from its hand-hammered copper bar to the wood-paneled walls and long community tables. Out the back door it’s like stepping into a Bavarian pine forest with deck and lawn seating, fire pits and frequent entertainment. You can even bring your dog, inside or out. Hungry? There are snacks at the bar, or you can order from your favorite food delivery app. For a real treat take a short stroll across the parking lot to the Chatterbox, a Long Grove institution.
Phase 3 Brewing is hard to find, but many believe it’s worth the hunt. Tucked away in the Lake Zurich Industrial Park at 932 Donata Court, the taproom entrance is the very last doorway along a long row of offices. Stepping inside there’s a somewhat underwhelming but serviceable bar. The real action is through the door into the working brewery. Ask the bartender about the tasting menu to construct your own experience with ales, lagers or hard seltzers.
“I joined Restoration Fitness in July 2022, and am so happy I did! I love the variety of personal workouts that the trainers plan, and the way they encourage me to keep going. On my own, I’m definitely more likely to quit early! They keep things interesting and challenging and are always open to feedback. I really appreciate how they watch and correct my form, as necessary, to make sure I don’t get hurt. I love coming in to the gym, as everyone (staff and other clients) are friendly and positive. I am stronger, and because of that, have been better able to participate in outside activities I love!” - Kim Appel
How To Eat Lighter, Be More Active and Take Advantage of the Season.
My favorite season is here — SUMMER! Warm weather is perfect for so many wonderful outdoor activities. It’s also a great time to revisit your health and fitness goals — perhaps you might choose to switch up your workout routine or try some new recipes.
Some of my favorite summer pastimes are hiking, walking, yoga on the beach, and boating. I’m blessed to live on Bangs Lake — I walk the 4-mile loop around the lake as often as possible. It’s rejuvenating to take in the fresh air, flowers in full bloom, and people (and pets) out and about enjoying the sun and the outdoors.
During the summer I eat lighter and take advantage of local farms for the freshest seasonal produce around.
Summer is also a busy time for social events; graduation parties, weddings, family vacations, concerts, and more that book my schedule up quickly. I try not to commit to every event or activity, and also block off some weekends for “no plans.” This helps me go with the flow and not get overwhelmed with calendar fatigue.
Here are my top three tips for a healthy and happy summer:
Stay active! Take advantage of local parks or forest preserves by biking, running, or walking regularly. Walk the
dog (or a friend’s dog) or visit a dog park to play with the fur babies. A simple 30-minute walk outdoors does wonders for the body and soul.
Get outside! Embrace nature — it’s therapeutic and grounding to connect with the Earth. Grab your laptop and work outside at your favorite coffee shop. Take a few moments to read on the patio or sit outside during your lunch break.
Stay mindful to balance your activities and schedule — don’t forget to make time for YOU. Self care is critical when there is a lot going on and you may feel stretched too thin. Make regular time to get a facial or a manicure, or to spend a half hour by yourself to meditate, read, or journal.
When working with my clients, I assess every facet of their life and determine their health goals. Since everyone is unique, there is no “one size fits all” solution for optimal health. I work closely with my clients to create a custom plan for them to follow, including simple diet and lifestyle changes to create sustainable healthy habits.
What are YOUR summer health goals?
I love fresh mangos in the summer! This salsa checks all the boxes – it’s quick to prepare, delicious, and very versatile. It’s a fabulous complement to mahi mahi or halibut, can be a yummy sandwich topping, or simply enjoyed with tortilla chips.
• 2 ripe mangoes, peeled and diced
• ½ red pepper, diced
• 1-2 jalapeños, diced (optional depending on how spicy you like it)
• 2-3 green onions, sliced thinly
• ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
• 1-2 limes, juiced
Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl and enjoy!
