Have you ever heard the saying, “Home is where the heart is”? What about the person who sang the words, “I left my heart in San Francisco”? What does that mean if home is where the heart is? Regardless of the cliché, there is something significant about Home. As a parent, we always wanted our kids to invite their friends over, to play ball in the yard, explore the woods, enjoy the fire pit, and to settle in for the night during sleepovers. For us, Home is where we tend to gather around the island in the kitchen or on the patio, talking too loud as we share the happenings of the busy day. What’s better than having all the kids “home” for the holiday, everyone under one roof, playing games well into the evening, reminiscing about what it was like in days past. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about Home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”
While the idea of home includes our physical dwelling place, it also encompasses our city and community. Home is where we live, work, and raise our family and our home is exceptional. We feel like the lucky ones as we get to learn more about the businesses, organizations, and individuals that comprise this city and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together.
As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you'll feel uplifted, encouraged, and connected to the people around you - in your city, your neighborhood and most all of - your home. Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it as coffee a table piece or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver value beyond what you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.
Happy March!

For Tanya, real estate encompasses so much more than transactions. Whether they are first-time homebuyers, repeat homebuyers, or selling a multimillion-dollar estate, Tanya enjoys the diversity and unique circumstances that accompany each client. “We truly specialize in the human connection, connecting with property owners and other people in the community,” she explained. “I help them with their creative endeavors, changes of seasons of life, celebrations, and losses. Tanya and her team are known for beautiful imagery, interior design, and creative staging of homes. With a client-centered approach, the team uses elegant, thoughtful techniques for staging and styling each home. “I help sellers by positioning their homes in the marketplace in a beautiful, tell-astory kind of way,” she said. “My talent is staging, styling, and transforming what technically is a foundation, framing, insulation, and siding, into telling a story about the family, the lifestyle that it could create, and the wide breadth of opportunities that a house could offer.”

Many of Tanya’s clients are legacy clients and she enjoys making those connections across generations. “These are clients that I've helped sell their family’s estates, and now their children and grandchildren are buying homes,” shared Tanya. “Most of my first-time homebuyers are now coming from the families that I've represented over the last 20 years and I love it!”
Tanya and her team possess a diverse wealth of knowledge and experience that they integrate with a personal touch that encompasses kindness, authenticity, and elegance. “We're moms, friends, daughters, and citizens, and we're here to provide a service as trusted advisors. Humble beginnings. That’s how Ron and Jen VanderBeken describe the commencement of their business, VanderBeken Remodel. After meeting as elementary school teachers, Ron and Jen decided to switch gears in 2006 when Ron took a full-time job with Jen’s father - a local builder. But when the company fell apart in 2007, they weren’t sure where to go next.
“Nobody was hiring in the industry,” said Ron. “We really had no choice but to do something else. And this is where we landed.”
The pair, however, was not entirely new to building and remodeling – Ron spent his time off in college working for luxury home builder Murray Franklyn, and Jen’s father and grandfather had been custom homebuilders in Seattle.
“I used to collect cans and recycle them on the job sites,” Jen said. “Eventually I started working in the office organizing files and filing invoices.”
Fifteen years later, the office of VanderBeken Remodel now sits in historic downtown Marysville, nestled between 3rd and 4th Street on State Avenue, with six staff members, three office dogs, and hundreds of projects seen to completion. Potential clients get the benefit of working closely with the entire team to make their home goals a reality.
“People’s homes are their largest asset,” said Jen. “It’s a huge investment and can be an emotional process.”
As far as services, everything at VanderBeken Remodel is done in-house – from designing to product acquisition to project management. They provide all information up front, giving their clients the tools they need to feel confident moving forward.
“We work diligently on the front end to get all the decisions made so that once we start production, it’s as seamless as it possibly can be,” said Jen. “We are always looking for how we can best serve our customers and every project is unique – it’s all custom and very individual.”
One of their favorite renovation projects was a historical Snohomish home, owned by Tom and Sara Pendergast. The home was built in 1904 but experienced a roof fire in 1934 when it was restored and expanded to its current footprint. The Pendergasts bought the home in 1998.
“We made a decision that we wanted to stay here forever,” said Tom. “This is the only house we’ve ever owned, it’s the only house our kids have known, and it really feels like home. We love Snohomish, the town, the entire area.” With that in mind, the Pendergast's knew they’d have to take on some projects.
“I grew up in a family that renovated houses, so I just had it in my mind when we bought this house that if this is going to be our forever home and we were going to make it perfect,” said Sara.
The first thing the Pendergasts did was add a large family room to their home. As time went on, they began to refine their style and goals, which is when they found VanderBeken Remodel.
Tom said that when they were interviewing various builders, it was Ron’s clear communication and integrity that made him stand out. That, and the fact that they deliver what they’ve promised.
In 2015, VanderBekens bumped out the Prendergasts' kitchen window, updated their guest bathroom, expanded their dining space, and added

built-ins to their master bedroom. In 2020, they rebuilt the freestanding garage, constructed a wraparound deck, added a laundry room off the back door, and installed a gas fireplace.
“They are the best remodeler we’ve ever experienced,” said Sara. “They ask you to think through everything before you start and write it all down so they can make sure they get it done. They’re always keeping your top priorities in mind and have a sincere desire to do quality work.”
Pendergasts said there are a couple more projects on the horizon, and they already know who they’ll call.
“We recommend Ron and Jen to anybody who’s doing anything,” said Tom. “We would never go to another builder.”
Some things that set VanderBeken Remodel apart are their small, in-house team, their collaborative process, and their genuine desire to understand and implement their client’s needs, goals, and vision for the project.
“There are always people buying houses,” said Ron. “What we do is we get to come in and customize it – to make it a home specifically for them. We want to find out what problems clients are having and then we want to give solutions. It’s not just come in, do a job, and leave. We really focus on the quality and experience our clients are getting - and our standards are high.”
When it comes to the emotional process of remodeling a home, Ron and Jen fully understand. Just as their
business was getting off the ground, they purchased a 1960s fixer-upper with a laundry list of issues, including a failed septic system. Ten years later they now have a unique, custom home that fits their family’s needs. The time, energy and investment were worth it.
“So many remodeling experiences are terrible for people,” said Ron. “You’re welcoming people into your home to have them tear it apart. The goal is obviously to make it better, but there are a lot of nightmare stories. That’s why the experience our clients receive from us is very important.”
And that experience doesn’t stop when the project does, as VanderBeken Remodel insists on a 90-day and one-year walk-through to touch base and see if there are any issues.
“There are lots of people that can build things,” said Ron. “It’s the relationship formed in transforming someone’s house into their home that is the most important part of what we do.”
Ron explained that now is a great time for homeowners to consider projects, as remodeling costs are much lower than what it would take to buy an updated home.
“There is so much potential in this area,” said Jen. “We’re excited to continue positively impacting Snohomish County. This is where we live, where we work, where we’ve raised our family, and it’s where we plan to stay.”

What’s the secret to a happy, healthy, and long life? Believe it or not, it’s actually quite simple: There are no secret ingredients, no sizable expenditures, and absolutely zero manufactured elements of any kind. Dive in with us as we share insights from our interview with the internationally renowned Blue Zones Founder, National Geographic Explorer, and award-winning journalist who is revolutionizing the way Americans make choices that can lead to living your best life.
“GET YOUR HANDS ON A PLANT-BASED COOKBOOK, PICK A DOZEN RECIPES, AND COOK THOSE WITH YOUR FAMILY ON SUNDAYS.”
For over twenty years, Dan Buettner has been fully committed to studying the health and longevity of Americans as well as influencing the proper and attainable health-centric environments our communities should embody. What started with identifying five “blue zones” around the world where people are both living longer as well as enjoying a higher quality of life in their elder years has now also evolved into proactively creating eco-systems where our communities engage in setting the standard for clean health.
If you haven’t subscribed to watching “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones” streaming on Netflix, do yourself a favor and soak up the well-documented views into how Ikaria, Greece, Loma Linda, California, Sardinia, Italy, Okinawa, Japan, and Nicoya, Costa Rica exemplify the basis behind the Blue Zones truth and have since inspired Dan and his team to further extrapolate how we can manufacture healthy blue zone lifestyles in virtually any city and within our homes by way of intentional adaptation.
Most of us are well aware of the “American way of life” we reside in, that being one of convenience in all shapes and forms. We excel in offering the most fast food options in any country. We rank at the top of the most cars per household. We embrace a sedentary at-home lifestyle. And, for many of us, it stems from our childhood to no-fault of our own; comfort foods and Friday night pizza deliveries, complacent recliners and cushy car commutes. In short, however, now more than ever we categorically live in a country where processed foods and ultra-convenience, unfortunately, translate to life-threatening health diseases and a lack of organic joy.
What is the best news of all? All of these characteristics are wildly easy to overcome with effortless, yet conscious pivots to making better decisions with our time, our food, and our focus. Ask yourself: Are you driving or walking? Are you connecting socially? Set your sights on avoiding the majority of processed foods and start eating a largely whole-food and plant-based diet that will (statistically) give you another 10-12 years on your life.
In place of your toaster, keep a fruit bowl on the counter. Create a low-level junk food drawer. Stop buying processed meat, potato chips, sweetened snacks like cookies and candies, and worst of all, sugar-sweet beverages, and start buying more beans, nuts, grains, and tea.
“Am I going to tell you to never have these? No, people deserve to treat themselves. But you’ll do yourself an enormous favor if you just don’t bring those into your home. If you want to go out for those treats, go ahead,” Dan says.
“Simply just don’t bring them home, and you’ll cut out 70-80% of consumption right there.”
Buettner’s first cookbook, The Blue Zones Kitchen, is a fantastic resource featuring ingredients and cooking methods that can increase longevity, wellness, and mental health. The recipes also include lifestyle tips such as proper portion sizes and the best times to eat dinner. Plus, check out his additional seven books that dig deep into the exact foods you should eat to how your circle of friends and family can influence your quality of life.
Who do you hang out with? Happiness is contagious. “The Blue Zone approach is to go through your contact base and think of some friends whose recreation is pickleball, biking, or gardening. Who will care about you on a bad day and have a meaningful conversation? Identify one or two friends who are vegan or vegetarian and show you how and where to eat whole foods. Actively invite them out for lunch, and bring them into your social circle: this will have a bigger, long-term impact on your behavior than any new diet or exercise, and it costs you zero. Plus, there is a ton of data that shows it works, and it’s long-term.”
“We are marketed the idea that if we change our behavior by exercising more, taking the right supplements, trying this longevity or that anti-aging hack, that we will lose weight and get healthy, yet it never works for the longterm,” says Dan. The Blue Zones approach is not trying to change your behaviors, it is asking you to change your surroundings…your eco-system.
Every time you go out to eat, you will consume an extra 300 calories that are laden with more sodium, sugar, and oil than eating at home. “Get your hands on a plant-based cookbook, pick a dozen recipes, and cook those with your family on Sundays. If you make the effort to cook it with your family, you will gain the skills and learn to make some good and whole food plant-based recipes.”
And, we would be remiss not to attend to the travelers at heart who would love to indulge in a luxurious resort paired with the facets of an actual Blue Zones destination. Dan highly recommends seeking out Silvestre in Nosara, Costa Rica where the experience offers wellness programming, fully-equipped kitchens, and outdoor activities that will fuel your inspiration for a healthier life.
Tap into Dan’s wisdom that is creating a new category of places that are not merely the legacy of a healthy culture, but more consciously created by enlightened individuals that are intent on supercharging healthier communities!

Every summer ramps are built for people who need to access their homes by the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties. (MBAKS)
Q: WHO IS THE MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION (MBAKS)?
A: Founded in 1909 and headquartered in Bellevue, MBAKS is the nation’s oldest and largest local homebuilders' association. Our purpose is to make home happen because we believe that everyone deserves a place to call home.
Q: WHAT IS RAMPATHON AND ITS HISTORY?
A: Rampathon began in 1993 when MBAKS members began building ramps for those in need throughout King and Snohomish counties. Just last year, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of Rampathon and our builder members constructed 29 ramps free of charge.
Q: HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY GET INVOLVED WITH THIS PROJECT?
A: Skilled builders can volunteer. They will be paired with a person in need in their area. MBAKS reimburses our builders for building materials, and we are very lucky to partner with Dunn Lumber which donates lumber supplies to the Rampathon program.
Q: HOW DO YOU FIND THE FAMILIES IN NEED?
A: MBAKS staff reaches out to senior centers, disability organizations, medical care professionals, veterans’ organizations and case workers within communities.
For more information about volunteer opportunities or to nominate an individual family for a ramp to be built visit http://www.mbaks.com/ ramp or email to: steward ship@mbaks.com .
Applications for Rampathon are now open through May 3rd. Ramps will be constructed starting in April and finish in July. Together we can give the gift of access to our neighbors and those we love.
