I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Wives, mothers, daughters and girlfriends are some of the most influential women in our lives.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms. It’s not just the biological mothers, but also the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable. I am so blessed to know so many of these ladies sharing their passions with us.
We are happy to be able to bring you this issue with inspiring stories from so many wonderful women who share their incredible journeys. They are educators, philanthropists, athletes and many more who live in Roswell and beyond.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to visit women-owned businesses in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to our city's women.
They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. These women are "steppin' out" and quietly go about their work. They are both seen and unseen.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.
Love local, shop local and keep living your best life in Roswell!

Proudly presented from our non-profit, renovating homes for children with special needs at zero cost to the family.
Kendall is 16 and suffered a traumatic brain injury after being struck by a car in her school parking lot. Before the accident, Kendall refereed soccer and lacrosse and was the only girl who played on the school football team. She is non-mobile and requires a lot of care. Kendall had a hospital-like bed in her room that used to be the family dining room since it was on the main floor. Sunshine on a Ranney Day gave her a dream bedroom with widened doors and space for easier access, plenty of storage space, and a comfortable and beautiful room to hang out in with family and friends. Big shoutout to our sponsors, Helen and Jimmy Carlos, who live in Roswell and give back so much to our community!

INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!
There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.
It is imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. A room needs a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, and I see this so many times, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I always add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light. Also, candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.
Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.
So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages. You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.

Leaving a life on the corner of New York City's Wall Street and Broad Street, mover and shaker Gene Chayevsky arrived in Atlanta in 2009, with the extensive investment knowledge he'd earned as a private investor (and through mere proximity to the New York Stock Exchange) in tow.
Since then, he has become a key player in Atlanta's business, investment, fitness, and now, philanthropy spheres. In 2022, Gene boldly decided to invest in what is now the fastest-growing fitness concept in the U.S. — the BODY20 franchise. As the largest multiunit franchisee of BODY20 in Atlanta, he's already found great success, but he's nowhere near done. He recently sat down with us and divulged how he got to where he is today and what the future has in store.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ATLANTA FROM NYC?
I moved to Atlanta 15 years ago to take over as CEO at a portfolio company owned by the private equity firm I was with. We felt that Atlanta would provide a more pleasant and sustainable environment to raise our kids, who were five and six at the time. Once we got here, my wife retired from dentistry, sold her New York practice, and we had our third child, William.
OUTSIDE OF BODY20, WHAT OTHER BUSINESSES HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH?
I am an investor. My investment company is KLW Capital (named after my kids Kirk, Liv and William). I have traditionally invested in private and public companies as a passive investor, but decided to make an active investment and commitment to BODY20 in 2022 as a vehicle for building a substantial business from the ground up.
WHAT DREW YOU TO THE BODY20 BRAND?
When searching for franchises, I assessed the quality of the business model. I wanted a recurring revenue, membership-based business with attractive margins. I also knew I wanted growth potential.
My search brought me to the wellness and fitness space, where I could fundamentally improve people’s lives and return to my family roots—doctors, dentists and healthcare business owners run in the family. I zeroed in on BODY20 for its unique approach to fitness. Its 20-minute, tech-enabled workout replaces hours of traditional strength training in the gym. BODY20’s efficacy, efficiency and affordability are changing the game in wellness and fitness across the U.S.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ROSWELL FOR A BUSINESS LOCATION?
Roswell is a perfect location for a high-end boutique fitness business. The city has the right demographics, a substantial number of qualified households and coverage of multiple trade areas. Roswell has a great business community, a welcoming and efficient city government and it's one of the top communities in the metro area with great schools.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?
I am an active member of the Greater North Fulton Chamber. I also have plans to join a Rotary chapter. In conjunction with other Atlanta area BODY20 franchisees, I sponsor the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR KEYS TO SUCCESS?
The biggest thing is providing great service. BODY20 has incredible coaches and staff, a clean studio and a welcoming atmosphere. I focus on building the culture and developing personal relationships with our members.
We are also very active in the local community. Sponsorships, networking and cross-referral relationships with local businesses have helped me grow the BODY20 brand in and around Roswell and become the fastest-growing BODY20 studio in the country.

At Roswell’s Elkins Pointe Middle School, a transformative journey is underway with the arrival of PTA Principal of Excellence awardee, AJ Smith. Recognizing the profound impact of environment on students' mindset, Ms. Smith champions a vision where aesthetics help shape expectations, self-worth, and connections. By fostering an inviting atmosphere, she aims to cultivate increased engagement and satisfaction among students and staff.
One notable initiative is the revitalization of the principal’s office. Once a dreary space, it was reborn through a generous donation from Roswell’s Ballard Designs Outlet into a professional and welcoming sanctuary. It takes a village, and the enthusiasm of the Ballard Designs team to jump in and make change warmed the hearts of the school’s community. Ballard Designs is dedicated to giving back to the community. Through donations, volunteer efforts and integrated partnerships, they strive to provide support and foster hope.
With a student body nearing 1000 and a staff exceeding 100, Elkins Pointe carries the distinction of being a Title 1 school, serving a community where many face economic challenges. Recognizing the unique needs of these students, Ms. Smith emphasizes the importance of creating aesthetically pleasing environments. This effort isn't just about decor—it's about equity. By investing in a visually appealing learning space, educators ensure every student has access to a quality education and the opportunity to thrive.
Principal Smith and the Elkins PTSA want the school’s spaces to reflect the inspirational teaching happening within its walls. Stay tuned as the school continues to grow and flourish!
Magnolia Place of Roswell and Historic Roswell Place celebrate the rich stories and backgrounds of residents like Bunny, Teresa, and Margaret. Their life experiences inspire and remind us of how much seniors have to share.
In the heart of Roswell the remarkable stories of three exceptional women, Verna "Bunny" Farmer, Teresa Decara, and Margaret Skinner, paint a vivid picture of the thriving environment in senior living.
Verna “Bunny" Farmer, a resilient 99-year-old veteran, has called Magnolia Place of Roswell home for 14 years. Bunny served in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps during WWII, earning the Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and WWII Victory Medal. She is Magnolia Place's sole female veteran resident who faithfully served our nation. She continues to inspire through her remarkable story and tenacious spirit.
Bunny's passion for staying active and healthy shines through her participation in exercise activities offered by Magnolia Place. Despite challenges with her right leg, she remains dedicated to maintaining her well-being. “I want to stay as healthy as possible,” she says. Bunny also loves events that revolve around music, animals, and crafts.
An avid news reader, she was honored to be photographed and interviewed for She Served magazine. Bunny also enjoys veterans events in her senior living community and visits from the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). During their last visit to Magnolia Place, they presented her with a beautiful blanket, clothes, and flowers.
Teresa Decara is 91 years old and has been a cherished resident at Magnolia Place of Roswell for almost two years. Teresa loves her community and appreciates the vibrant social life, diverse programs, and engaging events that keep her active and involved.
“The people are good, and they do a lot of activities with us and take us places,” she shares. She also loves playing games like bingo and bunco and doing arts and crafts.
Teresa emphasizes the importance of staying engaged and enthused, and she credits Magnolia Place for creating an environment where residents are continually stimulated and entertained. “You’re not sitting here all day,” she says. “They have lots of activities!”
Margaret Skinner, an accomplished 82-year-old writer and professor, has found a welcoming home at Historic Roswell Place for the past two years. With a rich background as a former University of Memphis Department of English writing instructor, a writer-in-residence at Sweet Briar College, and a recipient of the Walter E. Dakin Fellowship in fiction at the Sewanee Writers' Conference, Margaret brings a wealth of experience to her senior living community.
What resonates most with Margaret about Historic Roswell Place is the profound sense of community. For this Midtown Memphis native, the cherished friendships and connections with neighbors make every day special. As the author of two novels, "Old Jim Canaan" and "Molly Flanagan and the Holy Ghost," Margaret's love for literature and storytelling continues to enrich the lives of those around her.
Margaret enjoys the exercise, music, and arts and crafts activities in her community and is a “go-getter” when it comes to participating. She enjoys joining group outings and is also very good at word games, which is no surprise since she's an author.

Susie Corona has a passion for helping others in golf, life, and real estate.
She got her start in golf at the Desert Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ where she was the merchandiser for the golf shops. During her free time, Susie would volunteer to pick up balls for the Golf Digest School’s Hall of Fame golf instructors in exchange for golf lessons. She started competing in amateur tournaments, excelling quickly and, after winning the 1990 AZ Women’s State Stroke Play, decided to turn professional in 1991. Though she loved competing, Susie discovered that her true passion lay in helping amateur players during the Pro-Am events. In 1995 she became an LPGA teaching professional.
Susie taught golf in Houston, Texas, where she married Danny Corona. In 1997 they moved back to Scottsdale, Arizona where she returned to Desert Mountain Golf Club as the assistant director of instruction. Dedication, desire to help her students, and a love for the game as an LPGA Class A golf instructor led Susie to become one of Golf Digest's top 100 golf instructors.
Along with her love of golf, Susie had a strong passion for real estate.
SUSIE CORONA BLENDS HER PASSION FOR GOLF AND REAL ESTATE PROWESS
THEY PURCHASED A HOME IN BROOKFIELD COUNTRY CLUB
AND JOINED THE CLUB WHERE
BOTH SUSIE AND DANNY BEGAN TO PLAY GOLF, MEET NEW FRIENDS, AND BECOME ACTIVELY INVOLVED WITH THE COMMUNITY.
She would help her students look for homes in local golf communities. In 2003, Susie got her real estate license. Two years later, Danny got his license so that he could provide additional support, which allowed time for Susie to continue teaching golf.
In 2013, Susie faced a formidable challenge when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She continued teaching golf and assisting real estate clients throughout her chemotherapy and is now cancer-free. In 2015 Danny joined Susie as a full-time partner at their newly formed CoronaTeam at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Arizona Properties. They became one of the top realtor teams in Arizona.
In 2019, they decided to move closer to their extended family in Roswell. Their daughter Riley had just graduated from William and Mary where she played on the women's golf team and was heading to LSU for her MBA. Their son Charlie was pursuing his undergraduate degree at LSU. They purchased a home in Brookfield Country Club and joined the club where they began to play golf, meet new friends, and become actively involved with the community. Susie’s passion for competing returned and she reclaimed her amateur status. She won the 2023 Brookfield Country Club Women’s Championship and competes on Team Play with other ladies from the club.
“Both Danny and I love Brookfield Country Club. It’s a relaxed environment with unassuming members. The golf course is aesthetically pleasing, yet very challenging. The amenities, swimming, tennis, pickleball and beautiful clubhouse, are what makes Brookfield Country Club subdivision one of the most sought-after communities,” says Susie. “I’ve also had the privilege of playing at other beautiful clubs in the Metro-Atlanta area, which has expanded our knowledge of the neighborhoods and communities that surround these various golf clubs,” she says. The CoronaTeam has found their niche in the real estate market, working with buyers and sellers in or around golf communities.
Susie and Danny have a strong passion and determination to make the real estate process as rewarding as possible for all their clients. Their professional interaction with all parties involved in the transaction, their knowledge of the market, and strong negotiating skills, combined with integrity and perseverance, have elevated their real estate business to new heights. For their considerable efforts, The CoronaTeam was recognized in 2023 as BHHSGeorgia Properties President’s Circle, which represents the top 5% of the company globally.

If you are planning to leave your child an inheritance, but are concerned about their spending habits or possible creditors, an Inheritance Trust is the best way to protect it. An Inheritance Trust allows you to place someone else in control of the assets for your child, or to make set distributions at specific intervals or events. Assets in such a Trust would only be available for the care of your child, no matter their age, and would not be considered marital property if they were to divorce in the future.
For the month of May, Oren Ross & Associates will include a Free Inheritance Trust with every Revocable Living Trust Package. Call today for your Free Estate Planning Strategy Session to learn more.
Angela Naples is the founder and head of school for Atlanta Academy, a preK - 8th grade private school. Mrs. Naples has a rich background within the Atlanta private school landscape. After several years at Christ the King, she was appointed head of school for the Donnellan School. When it changed ownership, several families asked for her help to start a school for their children. Angela says, "I was on board as long as the parents could find me a space." In less than two weeks, they raised a quarter of a million dollars as seed money and Atlanta Academy became a reality in 2000.
The faculty and students rented space from Sandy Springs United Methodist Church, where the school continued to
grow for seven years. With over 200 students, Atlanta Academy was overflowing. The search for expansion space started, but with the high property prices in Buckhead and Sandy Springs, they knew they would have to go slightly north. They visited an empty strip mall, but it was still out of their price range.
A chance encounter at Starbucks between Angela and the property manager led to him inquiring about her interest in the property. She told him the property was "out of their league" financially, but he strongly encouraged her to make an offer. Angela and the board created a five-year business plan, returned with the offer, and Atlanta Academy had a permanent space to call home.
The landlord for Atlanta Academy's new space, Roswell-based Malon D. Mimms Company, invited Angela to breakfast soon after the lease paperwork was signed. Angela and a board member went to breakfast, thinking that perhaps the landlord was going to change his mind. What they learned was quite the opposite. After researching her and the school's background, Mr. Mimms informed them that he was donating the entire nine-acre property to Atlanta Academy.
Fast forward to 2024, and Atlanta Academy is a remarkable school community serving over 395 students from preschool to 8th grade.
What does Angela love so much about Atlanta Academy? "I love the teachers," she says. "Ours are incredibly invested in their profession and passionate about engaging their students. They continually hone their skills to make their teaching methods relevant."
What are some of your favorite spots for dinner with friends in Roswell? "My husband Andy and I love the charm of Roswell and the wonderful restaurants. Our favorites are The Mill Kitchen and Bar and Osteria Mattone."

Roswell's Kate T. Parker is a mother, wife, Ironman, New York Times bestselling author, and professional photographer who photographs both personal projects and commercial work for her clients, which include REI, Verizon, Athleta, and American Express.
Her 2017 national bestselling book Strong is the New Pretty, adapted from her wildly successful photography series, garnered outstanding media attention and support from the Spice Girls, David Beckham, Drew Barrymore, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, and Emma Watson. The book is a gorgeous and inspiring photographic celebration of girls being themselves—fearless, silly, wild, stubborn, proud, and fierce. It challenges the idea of what it means to be feminine and shows us beauty comes not from how you look, but from being true to yourself. It also inspired Kate to launch a philanthropic arm of SITNP, partnering with Girls on the Run, Girl Up, The Arthur Blank Family Foundation, Glam4Good, Disney and The Bully Project to invest in girls’ health and education.
Now Kate turns her lens to women and girls speaking out and speaking up in FORCE OF NATURE: A Celebration of Girls and Women Raising Their Voices. Filled with 150 full-color and black-and-white images of diverse subjects from all over the country who find, use, amplify, and raise their voices for
themselves and the causes they’re passionate about. It celebrates the power of women and girls and seeks to inspire others to raise their voices.
In a world where women are being suppressed and their rights stripped away, Kate’s portraits of mothers, daughters, sisters, nurses, coaches, and classmates uplift and empower with the message that everyone has a voice, and everyone’s voice matters, no matter its source or volume. Meet Zoe, 10, CEO of her own company that makes dolls who have curly hair just like her; Elizabeth, age 25, who is affected by non-speaking autism and gave her college valedictory address through her text-to-speech device; and Adi, age 12, who used her voice to create change in the way sports stores merchandise and recognize female athletes and gear.
“As a woman and a mother to two girls, I have seen how the world tries to fit us into narrow categories with low expectations,” says Kate. “I wanted the opposite—I wanted to hear girls’ and women’s voices shouting from the rooftops. After photographing, interviewing, and showcasing thousands of people over my career, I saw firsthand how one voice can affect change. Our girls have the power to change their world and the world at large. They just need to fully realize it.”

BUSINESS:
Fixing Nutrition - a nutrition and lifestyle coaching business to help you regain and/or maintain your health.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN ROSWELL:
I'm new here. I moved to Roswell in November of 2023 after spending a couple of decades living in Mexico City.
DESCRIPTION OF YOUR BUSINESS:
I’m a former investment banker, with a degree in mathematics, a cycling enthusiast and avid reader. I became obsessed with nutrition when my mother-in-law was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. The genetic component of this terrible disease made me worry for my husband and sons.
Our genes don't have to dictate our future. Nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management have a huge impact on our lives. I witnessed the effects firsthand. I changed the way I ate, and I was fascinated with what a difference it made. I got leaner and stronger and gained so much mental clarity.
I am in the latter half of my 50s, so I have also focused on the hormonal changes inevitable to all women at this age. The right nutrition and lifestyle play a huge role in balancing our hormones and ensuring a smooth transition to a new stage of life that need not be feared. I can walk you through this path, making sure you are not alone, well supported and guided in your decision to have hormonal replacement therapy – or not.
BEST ADVICE MY MOM GAVE ME:
Be your own health advocate. Don't take medicines lightly. Always explore natural remedies first. Chicken broth cures most things.
BUSINESS:
While my most important job is raising and being present for my three kids, I also support our family businesses and manage our commercial properties.
I am a native of Roswell and feel fortunate that my husband and I get to raise our kids here.
DESCRIPTION OF YOUR BUSINESS:
For the past two years, I have been honored to be chair of the Historical Committee for Roswell Woman's Club. I have used my formal architectural training to create designs to transform two of Roswell's historic homes, Bulloch Hall Library and Mimosa Hall, for the holiday season. Those designs have been brought to life by the wonderful women on our committee. I also serve on the IT committee to provide support behind the scenes. Next year, I look forward to serving as assistant treasurer and membership committee co-chair for RWC.
I joined Roswell Woman's Club in 2019 to give back to the city I love. At that time, I only had a glimpse of RWC's impact. Not only do we have fun and build wonderful friendships, but we also work together to support nonprofits, education, and students right here where we live.
When I was younger, my mom was an elementary school teacher at a Title 1 school. She always ensured every student who wanted a hug before going home for the day got one from her, because that might be the only hug they got all day. This kindness and compassion has greatly impacted me, and I hope to pass the importance of these qualities on to my kids.
BUSINESS: Retired educator
Since the mid-1970s. My husband Ron and I met while we were in college at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. We’ve been married for over 50 years! After we graduated and completed some educational pursuits, we moved back to Ron’s hometown of North Atlanta. We chose to live in Roswell and moved into our current home where we have lived and raised our family since 1979.
BUSINESS:
31 years in education. I began as a classroom teacher and retired in 2015 as an elementary school principal in Cobb County Public Schools.
My parents always taught me, and reinforced by the way they lived, that people are more important than things and attitude is a choice every person makes.
As I’ve worked with others and my own family, my personal mission has been that I will be a source of leadership, compassion, and integrity to my family, school, community, and church. I joined Roswell Woman’s Club because their mission is closely aligned with mine.
I enjoy contributing my time and talents to RWC by helping to organize projects in Roswell and North Fulton. I have served as a club officer and as the president from 20222023. I’ve formed new friendships through my affiliation with RWC. It is a strong and active service organization. I am proud to be a part of the work we do for our community.

Over the years, she's gained knowledge from bartending/training all over the U.S., from California, Texas and Las Vegas, to Miami. "I am excited for a new margarita cocktail that we will be featuring in spring called the Thai Me a Rita. It is light, refreshing and easy to sip on, with fresh Thai basil in the cocktail. It can also be made zero-proof," says Kristi, who manages the Canton Street Social bar program on nights and weekends. She works a full-time job too, and also enjoys traveling to hike, explore, and paddleboard at different national parks. "I enjoy anything that involves outdoor activities and getting doses of vitamin D from the sun," she says.

The Benson sisters—JoAnna Benson Spencer and Jennifer Benson McClure—have deep roots in Roswell and are committed to investing in their community.
The sisters' love and commitment to Roswell runs as deep as their roots. For the Benson family, those roots trace back to ancestor Enoch Benson, a Revolutionary War soldier who fought under General George Washington at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. Enoch eventually settled in Sugar Hill around 1818, where he lived until he was 83 years old. In the 50s, JoAnna and Jennifer’s grandfather Harold Benson Sr. purchased the Wright car dealership in Roswell, which he named Benson Chevrolet.
“Our dad, Jack Benson, helped run the dealership when he was a young adult. He met our mom at a tiny restaurant across the street from the dealership called The Green Hornet,” explains JoAnna. “The building is still there.”
Harold Benson served as president of the Roswell Rotary in 1962 and was president of the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce. He was very active in the local community. “My grandfather used to provide cars to the pastors of the churches in Roswell,” JoAnna says. “One time, an RHS baseball player came into the dealership and asked for a donation to the team to go to a tournament in Florida.
Instead of a financial contribution, he paid for the entire trip and gave them a van to drive down to the tournament in.”
Raised in a family of real estate investors with deeds that date back to the 1800s, the Benson sisters—who are both married to Roswell natives and still reside and raise families in the city—continue to keep that tradition alive and well. After the passing of their father Jack in 2015, the sisters vowed to continue with the family business. In honor of their dad, they continued to hold the annual Benson Breakfast each Christmas, which has fed more than 100 Roswell residents and raised money for charities in North Fulton for 15 years.
“THE TYPE OF BUSINESSES WEBRING TO THE TAKE THAT R ESPONSIBILITY LIGHTLY . ” COMMUNIT Y MATTER TO
“Our properties that are most near and dear to our hearts are those on Oak Street in Roswell, which were purchased back in 1986,” JoAnna explains. In recent years, they’ve continued to expand and acquire additional properties on Oak Street. “It’s a hot spot off Canton Street, and in our opinion, it's one of the best ‘before and after’ stories in Roswell,” she says. “It might be pushing it a little to say Oak Street is the new Canton Street, but safe to say that it is Canton Street's little sister who's growing up fast and is going to make us proud.”
ANDWE DO NOT
The sisters eventually saw a chance to shift their tenant base and bring more life to Oak Street than just automotive. According to JoAnna, former chair of The Historic Preservation Commission in Roswell, members of the community have referred to her and her sister as Roswell’s “big sisters.”
They took a leap of faith and so did their new tenants like Linen and Flax and Red Baron Antiques. Other tenants range from a distillery, Blended Family Spirits, Seek One, the Sunshine on a Ranney Day nonprofit, Oak Street Bottle Shop and All South Printing.
Now JoAnna and Jennifer have a waiting list of people who would like to rent spaces on Oak Street. They do not put up "for lease" signs. They prefer to find tenants through word of mouth and referrals.
“Jennifer and I love Roswell. It’s our home. The type of businesses we bring to the community matter to us and we do not take that responsibility lightly. We have been blessed with the family business and we operate it daily in a manner that is in honor of our ancestors, and in service to our descendants and community.”

When Karen Riddell first started writing, she found it very isolating and challenging. Though she had completed her undergraduate and law degrees at University of North Carolina and practiced civil litigation in Atlanta, when she would later sit down to pen blog posts for Psychology Today, the pace was different. “I joined a writers' group when I first started writing and those eight women are some of my dearest friends,” says Karen who lives in Roswell. "We all have taken different paths as writers but we are each other’s greatest cheerleaders and resources!”
She hit pause on her career when the rapid arrival of three daughters spurred her to swap her briefcase for a diaper bag, and she became an avid community volunteer and leader.
After an exciting foray running a small business in the fashion world, Karen found a new passion: friendship and its power to positively impact a person’s life personally and professionally, emotionally and physically. Karen became a friendship blogger on Psychology Today’s website and became certified in both positive psychology and life coaching. She also began speaking to groups about the power of friendship. Recently, she addressed the Roswell Woman’s Club.
"Karen's presentation to The Roswell Women's Club last fall left an impression on me. I had never given much thought to the biological benefits of friendship," says Mary Fazio, who also hosted a networking event featuring Karen. "Her work opened my eyes to the fact that the importance of relationships extends well beyond social enjoyment. As a natural extrovert, I had not given much thought to helping others strategize how to make new friends, and being cognizant of intentionally nurturing existing relationships. Karen's book is a great resource and reminder that friendship matters!"

Making homemade bread is coming back, and while the convenience of buying a pre-made loaf is readily available, there is nothing like the taste of a warm, homemade loaf right out of the oven. These easy-to-follow recipes are exploding with flavor and are simple to make.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 ½ cups flour
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 tablespoon lemon zest
• ¾ cup milk
• ½ cup vegetable oil
• 2 eggs
• 1 teaspoon lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 teaspoon almond extract
LEMON GLAZE ICING:
• 1 cup powdered sugar
• 2 teaspoons lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon almond extract
• 2 tablespoons sliced almonds
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 350° F. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt and baking powder. In a separate bowl, combine sugar and lemon zest and lightly mix. Stir in flour mixture and set aside. In a separate bowl, mix oil, eggs, lemon juice, vanilla and almond extract. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir. Pour batter into a greased loaf pan and bake for 1 hour. Cool for 15 minutes and then carefully remove from the pan. Next, make the lemon glaze by combining all of the icing ingredients and whisk until smooth. Drizzle glaze all over the loaf and sprinkle with almond slices. Enjoy!
This recipe is quick and easy to make with just a few simple steps. It tastes great on its own, but dipping it in olive oil infused with fresh herbs adds an extra level of flavor.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 ¾ cups warm water
• 2 ½ teaspoons sugar
• 1 package active dry yeast
• 4 cups flour
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 4 tablespoons olive oil
• Optional:
• Fresh rosemary
• Coarse sea salt
• Fresh pressed garlic
INSTRUCTIONS:
Use a stand mixer with a fitted dough hook, and stir together the water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir again. Set mixture aside for 5 minutes. Mixture should be foamy. Next, add the flour and salt and mix on low until a shaggy dough forms. Increase speed and mix for an additional 4-5 minutes. Brush a large bowl with olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Set aside for about 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough has doubled in size.
Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of oil. Uncover the dough and rub hands with olive oil. Slide your hands under the dough and fold it onto itself. Continue to work your way around the edge of the bowl, folding the dough onto itself until there is a ball that you can lift from the bowl. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press the dough to the edges. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set aside to rise for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the dough. Rub your hands with olive oil and use your fingers to make indentions on the surface of the dough. Sprinkle it with salt and rosemary and any desired toppings. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
When we asked you, our readers, to nominate outstanding women in our community to be featured in this issue, we received some wonderful submissions. We found Julie Porter, however, to be a true pillar and we are proud to share her story.
Julie is the glue at Mountain Park Elementary where she has worked for 10 years, starting as a paraprofessional in special education and moving to the front office six years ago.
Prior to starting her family, she worked for the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau for 17 years. “My experience in the hospitality industry makes the front office job a perfect fit for me,” says Julie.
Julie has two boys. Campbell graduated from Roswell High School in 2021 and is now a junior at Georgia College and State University. Hampton is a senior at RHS and will attend Georgia Southern University (her alma mater) in the fall. Julie’s husband, David, passed away in 2014 from an extremely rare stomach cancer. “During his one-year battle with this disease, he never
felt sorry for himself, he never felt anger, and he never said, ‘Why me?’ He simply faced the cards he was dealt and relied on his faith to carry him through,” Julie says. She reflects on his strength in raising her sons on her own and credits her family and friends, Brookfield neighbors, and work family at MPE who continue to raise her up daily. “I never would have survived without their love and support.” Julie has two sisters who both live in Towne Lake near their mother, and a brother in Alpharetta.
We wish Julie a delightful Mother’s Day and a bright future!
“I want our students to feel loved, special, and important and for every staff member to feel that I am here for them. I want our parents and guardians to feel welcome when they walk through our doors and grateful that their child goes to school here.”
