Live your best life. Experience the beauty. Appreciate the journey. Take pride in who you are. Always be glamorous. This is the legacy my mother gifted me, and the words I spoke as a testimony to her life and philosophy at her memorial service. If my Mom had a brand and a logo, it would be a shimmering Gold Stiletto symbolizing her strength, her beauty, her power, her grace, and, of course, her love of beautiful shoes.
This month is all about standing up and cheering for the women who make our lives more beautiful with their presence and gentle guidance—our mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, friends, teachers, mentors, and neighbors—doing extraordinary things and making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable in our daily life.
In these pages, we cheer for a savvy realtor who helps families preserve their legacy for future generations. We also salute the work of the amazing co-founders behind GoodWork, a nonprofit incubator, and the “good work” being done by two of their pioneering graduates.
As you think about showing gratitude to the magical women in your life, a bouquet always brings a smile, but one story may inspire you to consider planting an heirloom-cutting garden for Mom instead. Of course, the gift of a spa day never disappoints, and inside, you’ll meet a local med spa team with a less-is-more approach.
However you decide to honor the women in your life this month, it is also the perfect time to support the many women-owned businesses we love in our communities. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers, and music makers. Check out some home-grown entrepreneurs on our City Scene page (photo #6)— these four women are celebrated for harnessing their own agency and, my Mom would say, living the Gold Stiletto Rule.
Remember, it only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them. Happy Mother’s Day.

Nonprofits are integral to the fabric of communities, changing lives every day as they feed families, provide housing, help struggling people heal, care for the environment, empower children, and so much more.
Our first spotlight fulfills a unique and critical role in the Seacoast’s nonprofit ecosystem, operating at the center of strategy, education, and networking that helps other local nonprofits bring their vital missions to life. Meet the GoodWork team!
MEET FOUR SEACOAST NONPROFIT TRAILBLAZERS WHO LEAD BY EXAMPLE TO MAKE A LASTING DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY EVERY DAY
ARTICLE BY ANN KATHRYN KELLY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISSA KOREN PHOTOGRAPHYMolly Hodgson and Maria Sillari are leaders with the courage to think differently—and creatively—when pitching themselves for the same job five years ago. The case they presented convinced the hiring foundation to buy into their vision, and this dynamic duo has not looked back.
Think of Portsmouth-based GoodWork as a central connection point and launch strategy partner, supporting nonprofits in the idea phase, early-stage, or start-up modes The opportunity to direct this mission appealed to both women, but it became clear during separate interviews that the role was too big for one person to fulfill.
They, therefore, tried an unconventional—and risky—approach. “I called Maria to ask if she might consider teaming with me to present ourselves as co-leaders,” Molly explains. Maria was on board, adding, “We made the case that together we could drive a much bigger impact.”
They have a combined 50 years of experience in nonprofit and business leadership. Molly brings expertise in fundraising, development, and external relations. Maria leads operations and brings financial acumen. With help from partners, they drive results through programming like GoodWork’s no-cost “Incubator Program,” which shepherds accepted nonprofits through 18 months of customized coaching.
GoodWork is headquartered in Carey Cottage—a circa-1880s architectural jewel surrounded by 35 acres on the verge of demolition until its renovation in 2020. The cottage now offers meeting and event rental space to area nonprofits. Learn more at goodworkseacoast.org.
Our next two guests, alums of the incubator program, attest to its impact.
Living in a coastal community, our readership soaks in waterfront beauty daily. From rocky bluffs to sandy beaches, lighthouses to lobsters, what’s not to love about the Seacoast? For some, this extends, literally, beneath the ocean.
Andrea Tomlinson founded Portsmouth-based New England Young Fishermen’s Alliance to help train young people whose passion for the sea makes it their life’s work.
“We’re seeing a phenomenon—locally, but also nationwide—that we call the graying of the fleet,” Andrea explains. “As older, experienced captains near retirement age, the next generation is either not pursuing or not trained to do this essential work. Without this, the chain of succession stops.”
Owning and operating a business in small-boat commercial fishery requires as much business skill as hands-on deck and captaining experience. The Alliance’s programming assists and equips young men and women to move from deck work into the captain’s wheelhouse through a no-cost, ninemonth “Deckhand to Captain Training Program.” Accepted participants build much-needed business, finance, marketing, and public speaking skills, along with training on state and federal industry regulations. The latest cohort began in April and is meeting at Carey Cottage.
Andrea credits the GoodWork Incubator Program with what she calls “soup to nuts guidance” in helping her launch her own nonprofit. Learn more at neyoungfishermen.org.
Carrie Penna says she benefitted immeasurably from completing the GoodWork Incubator Program a few years ago. “The guidance and connections that Molly, Maria, and their partner network provide are invaluable.”
Soul Models serves middle school girls through a 10-week after-school program in the New Hampshire Seacoast and southern Maine. Their curriculum follows five pillars: Present Mind, Strong Body, Positive Spirit, Generous Heart, and Nourished Soul. Activity-based programming teaches girls creative expression, leadership development, stress reduction, and an ethic of service through volunteer opportunities.
Along with fun activities like yoga and arts programming, Soul Models invites local women leaders to role-model how they made a difference in their fields through presentations and activities that introduce girls to futures in entrepreneurship, the arts, leadership, movement, and STEM for example. In turn, this helps girls discover their own passions.
Carrie loves it when girls choose to return year after year. “That speaks volumes about our impact,” she says. “We meet some of these girls as fifth-graders. By the time they’re eighth graders, we’ve seen such overall growth in many areas, including spiritual and emotional. It’s wonderful to be part of their journeys.”
Soul Models will offer expanded summer programming in 2024. Learn more at soulmodels.org.
Who doesn’t want to wake up feeling amazing? We want to open our eyes each morning with a zest for life and the energy to take on whatever the day brings. While there is no magic solution promising to keep us youthful and vibrant forever (yet), there are many things we can do to feel good inside and out, such as treating ourselves to a bit of pampering. Scheduling some much-needed “me” time is an excellent way to boost your mood any day.
Enter Dr. Keenan Al-Hojerry, MD, a longtime Seacoast resident and family practitioner for over 20 years and the Medical Director of Seacoast Rejuvenation Center (SRC). He and his dedicated team of skilled nurses and
aestheticians help people look their best by offering a broad scope of aesthetic services, from relaxing facials to more advanced clinical treatments, in a serene and inviting environment—where clients feel at ease and a part of the SRC family.
As an experienced family and cosmetic medicine physician, Dr. Al-Hojerry understands the importance of self-care and how feeling happy and healthy inside and out makes all the difference in our long-term well-being. He is committed to researching and bringing his clients the latest innovations in aging science and medical-grade products.
Since taking ownership in 2016, the practice has significantly expanded its treatment offerings and clientele across the greater Seacoast by building a reputation for providing safe and effective clinical spa services. With a menu of facial and body treatments for both men and women, SCR’s most popular services include Botox, CoolSculpting, Hydrafacial, laser hair removal, and dermal filler. They also provide hair restoration, microneedling, cryotherapy, Mint PDO thread lifting, and many other restorative and rejuvenating therapies.

“LESS
”
IT’S
Due to this breadth of services, Dr. Al-Hojerry and the team work closely with clients to create individualized plans. “Our staff delivers personalized care to everyone who walks through our doors,” says manager Alia Bashiti. When new clients come into the center for the first time, they start with a consultation to discuss their treatment goals and preferences. Dr. Al-Hojerry describes his philosophy as “Less is more whenever possible. It’s about finding the right balance,” he explains. “It doesn’t always have to be a big change for improvement.”
Jaime Berggren, a local fitness expert and best-selling author, is a loyal client. As a health and wellness coach, Berggren appreciates their client-centric educational approach. “The team takes time to listen and learn what you want and explain the long-term benefits of the proposed plan,” says Berggren, adding, “They are not about pushing for additional services.” Their ultimate goal as a practice is to help people feel healthy, happy, and comfortable in their bodies at any age.
Providing the highest level of care possible is always at the forefront of the practice. The SRC team wants people to know they are in safe and experienced hands. Dr. Al-Hojerry invests in continuing education for his staff with training on the latest dermatology, plastic surgery, and aging sciences. “We want clients to feel well taken care of, confident in our skills, and leave feeling good and satisfied,” explains Dr. Al-Hojerry, wisely adding, “After all, when you look good, you feel good.”
Indeed, the goal of undergoing spa treatments is to look beautiful and youthful on the outside. Still, there’s no denying the many other benefits, like creating a positive, lasting impact on one’s self-image. While medical spa services may be considered a luxury, investing in your physical well-being helps you feel like the best version of yourself and ready to own your day and life.
Realtor Jennifer Madden is Making Waves in Historic Rye Beach, Leading the Way in Beachfront Rentals and Preserving Family Memories Along the Way
“I’m really good at hearing things that aren’t said. I like to think I am a perceptive person. This gives me a unique sense of what clients want.”
Jenn Madden is different from your ordinary realtor. She is in the business of making memories. Her goal is to help families safeguard memories for future generations and ensure precious new ones are possible. While Madden’s primary business is home sales, she has found a niche in summer and winter rentals on historic Rye Beach and the surrounding seacoast area. “These properties,” she says, “are more than real estate; they are pieces of family history.”
Madden’s fondest childhood memories are of golden summers spent at a house her family rented on Straws Point. This gives her a unique insight into the magic this nostalgia holds for her clients. What she finds most satisfying about renting beach properties are the long-standing relationships she develops. “Many of the same families return year after year,” she says. “We get to know them on a personal level. That’s what I love about this business.”
One Rye family’s story is an especially poignant testament to Madden’s impact on family legacy. In 2022, with their father’s passing, Jon Danos and his two brothers suddenly found themselves owners of the family beach property. They yearned to keep the house and four rental cottages that held so many treasured memories, but they needed a business plan. “My brothers and I were at a point of inflection,” Danos says. “How are we going to do this and be successful?”
While the senior Danos had rented only to longterm tenants, Madden encouraged the siblings to
pursue the “summer rental model,” taking advantage of rentals to visitors, primarily on a weekly basis in the summer and monthly in the winter. With her expert guidance, they renovated the cottages, using Jon’s wife Laura’s natural talents and eye for interior design, and renamed them The Cottages at Cable. “We wanted it to be a place of respite and comfort and for the guest experience to reflect the best of the New Hampshire seacoast community,” Danos says.
Madden also allayed their fears about winter income. “She advised us there is a strong off-season market,” Danos says, “and she was right on. Business is great.” He adds with emotion, “I think our dad would be really proud.”
Madden’s foray into the beach rental business came about purely by chance. Living at the beach was the catalyst. “Thirteen years ago,” she says, “someone shared how much they loved our beach and asked me where to rent a house.” Already licensed, Madden decided on the spot to open an
office and provide rental services. “I just kind of did it,” she laughs. “I took it as it came.” Things fell into place, and the beach rentals were well received. She now has more than seventy properties for rent. “We had a lot of support,” she says thankfully. “The community has been awesome.”
This intrepid entrepreneur is proud of her achievements as a business owner. She attributes much of the Madden Group’s success to the rapport she and her two rental agents build with clients, both tenants and homeowners. “We value our clients,” Madden says. “We make things as easy for them as possible.”
One of Madden’s most notable attributes as a realtor is her exceptional ability to read her clients and their needs. “I’m really good at hearing things that aren’t said,” she says confidently. “I like to think I am a perceptive person. This gives me a unique sense of what clients want, even when they don’t fully articulate it.”
Just as unique is Rye Beach itself, with its rich and storied history, giving it an old-world feel as palpable as the sea air. The pull of this area has drawn visitors as far back as the 1840s. “So many people have roots here,” Madden explains. “Houses have been passed down through generations.” She has put down her own roots here and intends to stay. “We love Rye,” she says. “We moved up here and never looked back.”
“Families return year after year. We get to know them on a personal level. That’s what I love about this business.”
DONNA & CHRIS COLELLA
Facebook: Another Shot Acoustic anothershotacoustic@gmail.com
TELL US ABOUT THE COUPLE BEHIND THE MUSIC. We are Donna and Chris Colella from Danville, NH. Over the past 16 years, we have entertained audiences around the region, playing a variety of musical styles from top 40 hits and classic rock to country and our original songs. We love performing for private events and at venues like Stone Church, Muddy Waters, Smuttynose Brewery, The Derryfield, and The One Hundred Club.
DONNA, WHAT IGNITED YOUR PASSION FOR THE STAGE?
Music has always been a big part of my life. I caught the bug the first time I sang "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog" on stage at six years old with my dad and uncles in their band. I sang in church and school choirs and later professionally in a few top 40 bands. Connie Francis and Barbara Streisand inspired me early on.
AND CHRIS, HOW DID YOUR MUSICAL JOURNEY BEGIN?
I picked up the guitar as a teen and just never looked back. My influencers were Elvis, The Beatles, Neil Young, Rush, and Van Halen. I got my "10,000 hours" of practice in a high school band and continued playing and singing as an adult in a professional cover band.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT PERFORMING?
As a couple, there's nothing like performing together. We get many compliments on our harmonies and our bond on stage. People always ask if we're married. We pride ourselves on sharing our love for each other, our music, and, most importantly, creating a connection with our audience.

A COMMUNITY COLLABORATION CONTINUES TO THRIVE WITH GARDENER'S SUPPLY COMPANY AND SHOALS MARINE LAB WORKING TOGETHER TO PRESERVE THE PIONEER WORK OF OUR LOCAL HEROINE
Poppies, hollyhocks, dahlias, sweet peas, foxgloves, and more bloom brightly on Appledore Island every summer as a living legacy calling to their “Island poet,” creator, and most famous resident, Celia Laighton Thaxter.
A poet, artist, and darling of the Boston literary scene in the late 19th century, Celia grew up in the Isles of Shoals, living much of her life on Appledore, where she designed and tended to her beloved pocket garden. With poets akin to rap stars today and Celia taking center stage, her artist’s salon at the family hotel on Appledore hosted great writers and artists like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry David Thoreau, and impressionist painter Childe Hassam, whose paintings made her garden famous.
For 47 years, the Shoals Marine Lab (SML) has recreated her garden as it was during Celia’s lifetime, dutifully following the plan outlined in her book, An Island Garden . However, recreating this garden year after year, seven miles off the Maine coastline, is no small undertaking. It is a labor of love for those involved in this collaborative effort where Art meets Science, and the past mingles with the present.
In 2018, with the greenhouses closing at the University of New Hampshire’s Thompson School of Applied Science, SML needed a new growing partner to source and cultivate Celia’s heirloom flowers from seeds. Few growers in the region had the resources and expertise to take this on.
Enter Rick and Beth Simpson, owners of Rolling Green Nursery, now part of the Vermont-based Gardener’s Supply Company. As community advocates and horticultural enthusiasts, the Simpsons stepped in to carry on the mission and eventually bring Celia’s garden from Appledore to the Seacoast community. Today, Gardener’s Supply picks up the baton, ensuring this vital work and the legacy of Celia and the Simpsons lives on.
So just as Celia, over one hundred years ago, carefully sowed her garden seeds in at her Portsmouth home before transplanting on Appledore, every Spring, Terry Cook, Celia Thaxter Garden Steward & Master Gardener with SML and Tammy Hathaway, Nursery Manager at Gardener’s Supply, nurture Celia’s garden back to life with their loving hands and watchful eye.
It’s a partnership where Terry oversees the planning and transplanting, while Tammy and team work on sourcing and starting the heirloom seeds in their greenhouse. In March, the “babysitting” begins as Tammy describes overseeing the production of 250 plants and over 20 varieties to recreate Celia’s English cottage-style cutting garden. “It’s a couple of nerve-wracking, nail-biting months tending to the seedlings daily—a little water here or there,” Tammy explains, but “it is magical when you hear about the visitor’s immersive experience walking in Celia’s footsteps.”
At the end of May, Tammy and team surrender their babies. With Terry at the helm, Celia’s flowers embark on their journey home to reunite and bloom brightly again on Appledore Island. Throughout the summer, master gardener volunteers care for the garden while docents lead visitors on garden and island tours.
Don’t worry if you cannot make the journey to Appledore. Another legacy from Rolling Green that Gardener’s Supply continues is also providing the flowers for a dedicated Celia Thaxter Garden in Prescott Park. They also sell the plants and seeds in their retail store in Greenland so local gardeners and Celia enthusiasts can enjoy her flowers at home.
As a poet, artist, gardener, and pioneer woman who seeded one of the first artist colonies, Celia would be delighted to witness the commitment and ongoing collaboration between Art and Science this annual project represents. In her words, “There is eternal summer in a grateful heart.”
