The Gentlemen's Issue

Guys, this one is all about you.
To honor you and everything you bring to our community, we worked hard to curate an entire issue that reflects your priorities and the most important things in your life.
So, let's start with tacos.
We turned to food writer, personal chef, and connoisseur of all things edible Joe Ricchio to show us where taco night in Portland is taken very seriously, and for good reason. For mouth-watering takes on taco faves and some creative interpretations of the classic Mexican fare, turn to page 18. You might discover a new Father's Day lunch spot or your next guys' night out go-to while you're at it.
When it comes to guys' night in and DIY libations, we had a hunch you might be looking to perfect your personal bar cart for the summer. For that, we asked Cameron Graham at Bow Street Beverage to share his picks for the Maine-based spirits you definitely want to have on hand for your next happy hour or outdoor barbecue (page 36).
Ok, food and drinks are covered (check!) but what about your favorite room in the house (or next to it)? We've tapped Charles Shattuck-Heidorn of PremierGarage of Southern Maine for his advice on making your garage more organized, functional, and the envy of all your friends.
And finally, we're bringing you an interview with our friends at Greener Postures Yoga who share with us the many reasons why yoga is such a valuable (yet often overlooked) form of movement for men to increase strength, flexibility, endurance, and so much more. Turn to page 24 to learn why getting on the mat could be the best new addition to your wellness routine.
So there you have it, a roundup of fresh ideas for what might become some of your new favorite things, and how to get the best of all of them in Portland. Have something or someone you'd love to see featured in our next Gentlemen's Issue? Get in touch on IG @portland.citylifestyle.

A TOUR OF PORTLAND’S MOST MOUTHWATERING MEXICAN EATS
As much as I can still enjoy the nostalgia of the ubiquitous Old El Paso Crunchy Taco Dinner Kit, I’ve developed specific standards about tacos over the years. The tortillas must be warm, whether griddled or steamed, until pliable. Nothing is worse than tortillas that break or fall apart during the first bite. There must be fresh herbs, acidity from the lime, heat from the salsa, and some crunchy elements. Of course, the most crucial aspect is the filling, and I have sought to represent a range of styles with this list.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY
JOE RICCHIO863 Broadway | South Portland
Assorted Tacos
Though they specialize in their namesake, the tacos and tortas at this no-frills South Portland spot are not to be missed. The carne enchilada, made with rich, spiced beef, and the carnitas (pork lovingly braised in its own fat) are standouts. The house-made hot sauces are superlative. Suppose you choose to load up on the habanero. In that case, you will definitely appreciate the generous sides of fresh cucumber and radish.
70 Washington Ave | Portland
Taquitos de Lengua
I have been eating at Tu Casa for 20 years, and if they were ever to close, I would move out of Portland. Though famous for their melty, delicious pupusas, most menu items—including the impossibly rich yet simple white rice—are solid. My favorite is their tongue tacos. Don’t knock tongue if you haven’t tried it, as I believe most people would simply think it was excellent roast beef if you didn’t tell them what it was. Another solid option to add tongue to is the Enchiladas Salvadorenas, a crispy tostada served with rice and beans.
“THE TORTILLAS MUST BE WARMED UNTIL PLIABLE—NOTHING IS WORSE THAN TORTILLAS THAT FALL APART.”
337 Ocean House Road | Cape Elizabeth Taco Sampler
Located in a Cape Elizabeth strip mall, Tostones Café is probably best known for its assortment of incredible arepas. The taco sampler comes with various carnitas, grilled chicken, and my favorite: chicharrones (essentially fried pork belly). Bring a group, order as much of the menu as humanly possible, and wash it down with an ocean of Don Julio.
147 Western Avenue | South Portland Tacos de Birria
Despite the fact that it's near the mall (and is located in an old Outback Steakhouse), El Rodeo is legit. Their birria tacos—a cross between a taco, grilled cheese sandwich, and Chicago-style Italian beef—come with hot sauce and a rich braising liquid for dipping. I highly recommend wearing dark colors if you plan on ordering them. Also not to be missed is the table side guacamole and queso with chorizo.
2 Portland Square | Portland Mushroom Dorados
Easily one of the more decadent vegetarian options in the city, these tacos feature warm, house-made tortillas, roasted mushrooms, queso fresco, jalapeno, and burnt corn crema. Amid a full selection of meat and fish tacos, these are my favorite on the menu. It is imperative to have a bowl of chili con queso to get things started.

Exploring the myriad ways practicing yoga benefits men in mind, body, and soul
Gone are the days when yoga was perceived as simply “stretching for women.”
According to Harvard Health, the number of American men doing yoga more than doubled from 2012 to 2016, and each year more men are learning the benefits of yoga as an inclusive and accessible wellness practice. “There’s this misconception that you already need to be flexible to start yoga, but a big part of the practice is gaining flexibility and mobility,” explains Gretchen Campos, manager of Greener Postures Yoga, a local studio with locations in Falmouth and South Portland. “It’s a great way to cross-train and vary up your movements—we see golfers, competitive cyclists, runners, and baseball players who make the same arm movements or have the same swing, and practicing yoga is an easy option to move away from those repetitive patterns, to stretch and lengthen your muscles.”
David Puopolo, who moved to Maine from the West Coast and now frequents Greener Postures, began practicing yoga nearly a decade ago at his chiropractor’s request. “I was under a lot of stress, and my whole body was seizing up,” he explains. “I visited a chiropractor, but she would only agree to continue seeing me if I started doing yoga. I was definitely hesitant at first, but she was militant about it,” Puopolo laughs. Greener Postures attendee and Portland firefighter Nick Derrig was introduced to yoga through his father. “I was doing the conventional bodybuilding stuff, and I was always tight in my hamstrings, back, and shoulders. My dad had been doing yoga for a couple of months, and it was the best thing that ever happened to him,” Derrig recalls. “At his urging, I tried out a class, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”

“There’s a misconception that you already need to be flexible to start yoga, but a big part of the practice is gaining flexibility and mobility.”
The age-old stigma that yoga is just for women is quickly fading. “I’ve done every kind of exercise—CrossFit, weights, I’ve done it all—and yoga is by far the best workout,” Derrig says. “Going to the gym for an hour and doing curls and shoulder presses is way easier than going to an hour-long heated yoga class. For someone to think yoga is just stretching, that’s definitely not the case.” Derrig and his colleagues at the Portland Fire Department practice yoga to focus on their physical and mental wellbeing thanks to a partnership with Greener Postures that provides free yoga for the city’s firefighters. “It’s been a game changer,” Derrig says of the program. “When I go to a yoga class first thing in the morning after a particularly stressful 24-hour shift, I come out with such a positive mindset. It really sets me up for success in my day.”
It’s clear that yoga is about more than just physical benefits—the practice also offers a way for men to blow off steam and reconnect with themselves. “Inviting breath and calm helps to release emotions and reduce stress,” says Greener Postures co-owner Heidi MacVane. Slower classes like nidra (guided meditation) or yin (deep stretching) tap into the parasympathetic nervous system and quiet the body to improve sleep, digestion, and immunity. “You really get a chance to clear your head and your mind,” explains Puopolo. “You’re linking breath to movement, and when you do that, you don’t really have the space to think about other things.” A consistent practice cultivates a sense of community, too. “Greener Postures kept me sane during the pandemic—I was practicing six or seven days a week,”
“Yoga clears your head and your mind.
When you’re linking breath to movement, you just don’t have the space to think about other things.”
he adds. “You feed off the energy in the class—everybody’s pushing and people are getting tired, but no one wants to give up. We’re all in it together and just trying to make it through.”
Greener Postures co-owner Danielle Toolan has one simple tip for those looking to start a yoga practice: “Just walk in the door!” The studio offers a new student special that makes it easy to try different
classes and teachers to find your preference. Both the Fundamentals Flow and Beginner's Series classes are great starting points, though new students are warmly welcome at all Greener Postures classes. “Yoga is such a big word, but it falls across a huge spectrum,” she says. “It could be a heated flow or a calmer nidra class. If you’re dealing with an injury, you might like a deep stretch, or maybe you’re looking to cross train, or you want sleep assistance. It’s a matter of selfstudy to determine what type of yoga resonates with you.” Puopolo adds that patience is key. “When I first started, I wanted to do everything. I had such a competition mentality, thinking ‘I’m going to hit this mat and do it all,’ but the body takes time. I’ve been doing yoga for a while and there are still poses that I’m trying to navigate. It can be frustrating, but you have to remember that it doesn’t happen overnight—you have to work at it.”
PremierGarage of Southern Maine offers custom solutions to make your dream space a reality
ARTICLE BY BECCA ABRAMSON PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF PREMIERGARAGE OF SOUTHERN MAINEWhile it may not be top of mind on your list of home renovations, transforming a disorganized garage into an orderly space can have a significant impact on your life. “Your garage is often the first place you enter when you come home, and having that space strewn about haphazardly can feel chaotic,”
“Your garage is the first place you enter at home, and having that space strewn about haphazardly can feel chaotic.”
explains Charles Shattuck-Heidorn, co-owner of PremierGarage of Southern Maine. It’s easy to eliminate piles of seasonal gear and holiday decorations, clustered corners stacked with boxes, and dusty floors with simple solutions like cabinets, shelving, hanging storage, and epoxy flooring.
Refreshing neglected concrete floors is an often-disregarded way to upgrade your garage. Adding an epoxy floor not only protects your concrete, but it can also keep your garage much cleaner: while concrete releases dust, epoxy flooring seals everything in and makes your garage a breeze to keep clean. In Project 1 (pictured on the opposite page), a client installing a new garage asked Shattuck-Heidorn to update the home’s older garage with matching epoxy. “The older garage had significant damage to the concrete, primarily cracking and spalling,” Shattuck-Heidorn explains.
“We repaired the concrete with specialized mortar and then ground down the pad to create a uniform surface for the epoxy to bond with. The homeowner was left with his older garage looking just as beautiful as the new one.”
Don’t worry if your garage feels like a disaster: it’s common for even the most immaculate homes to have problematic garages. “Our client owns a beautiful home on a lake, and every other space in the home is meticulously maintained, but their garage only had simple shelves and a concrete floor that was cracked and dusty,” says Shattuck-Heidorn. His team at PremierGarage of Southern Maine set out to elevate the garage’s functionality and align its beauty with the rest of the home (Project 2, pictured above). “Bringing in deep cabinets, a workbench, and slat wall created a space that feels clean and organized, allowing the homeowner to store all their

sports equipment,” explains Shattuck-Heidorn. “Plus, the decorative flake of earth tones in the new flooring accents the beauty of the nature around the home.”
If you’re unsure of how you’d like to use your garage in the long term, there are plenty of options to keep it tidy. In Project 3 (pictured above), the homeowners were just moving into their new space and were not yet sure how they intended to use their garage. “We decided to protect the new concrete with epoxy and added a cabinet, a small workbench, and tool storage,” says Shattuck-Heidorn. When space
is available, storage cabinets are a great way to hide seasonal gear. “Whether it’s all the sunblock and hats from the summer or your snowshoes and hockey equipment, a deep cabinet with doors can keep odds and ends out of sight and organized,” he explains. If your garage feels tight on space, Shattuck-Heidorn suggests hanging tools on walls. “Sometimes there is not enough space on a wall to install a cabinet or shelving due to the area vehicles require. Consider adding hanging storage to these walls to store snow shovels, yard rakes, garden hoses, and other relatively slim items.”

An expert explains how to create the ultimate bar cart featuring Maine-made spirits
What makes a great bar cart? According to Cameron Graham, marketing manager at Bow Street Beverage, the basic elements are fairly simple: vodka, gin, rum, whisky, tequila, and vermouth. Of course, it helps to have garnishes (like olives, citrus, and cherries) along with the proper mixing tools: a shaker, mixer, strainer, and paring knife or peeler. We challenged Graham to create the ultimate bar cart showcasing Maine-made spirits, and the results are absolutely worth incorporating into your own beverage cabinet.
Vodka
“With vodka, there’s not a lot of room for variation in flavor, because you really want it to taste like water,” Graham says. “Most of the places in Maine that make spirits are also making vodka. Cold River Vodka is one of my favorites, but if you’re looking for something organic, Split Rock Distilling in Newcastle makes a great organic vodka.”
Gin
“Gin has more room for maneuvering, because it can be really juniper-forward, or you can have a dryer gin that tastes more like vodka. Creativity can come through a bit more than it does with other spirits,” Graham explains. “Maine does gin really well—I think it’s because it doesn’t require lots of aging.” Round Turn Distilling’s Bimini Gin and Hardshore Distilling Company’s Original Gin are Graham’s top picks, both of which lean heavily into juniper flavors.
Rum
“I love Three of Strong Spirits because they’re so rum-focused,” Graham says. “They’ve really built out their rum line, whereas most other distilleries have either a spiced variety and a light rum or a light rum and a dark version.” In addition to their seven varieties of Maine-made rum, Three of Strong also makes great ready-to-drink cocktails including a canned mojito, Stormy Night (their version of a Dark and Stormy), and two kinds of rum punch.
Bourbon/Whiskey
“Like Maine’s gin and rum options, our bourbon is improving,” Graham notes. Hardshore Distilling’s Shorebird Whiskey comes in three expressions: a four-year-aged small batch with notes of honey and spice, a five-year-aged single barrel variety, and the six-year-aged Master Distiller’s Series with unparalleled smoothness and richness of flavor. Graham’s other favorites are Batson River’s Langsford Road Bourbon and Wiggly Bridge’s small barrel variety.
Tequila
Distilleries in Maine can’t legally market tequila, since tequila can only come from one of five authorized states in Mexico, but a handful of companies make a similar product called a blue agave spirit. Graham likes Batson River’s version, called Amato 33, as well as Wiggly Bridge’s Anejo Agave Blue, which is aged between 12 and 18 months in rum and bourbon barrels.
Miscellaneous
While herbal Amaros (think Fernet or Aperol) don’t typically originate in Maine, Liquid Riot’s Fernet Michaud, which is aged in blueberry wine barrels, is a great local option. Handshake, a Persian-inspired digestif bitters made right in Portland, adds a touch of creativity and zest to cocktails (or any beverage, for that matter), as do bitters from Vena’s Fizz House. “Vena’s started as a sort of soda shop in Portland, and their owner, Steve Corman, knows a ton and loves to lead educational workshops and classes,” Graham says. “I like to add their garam masala bitters to my coffee sometimes for an extra hint of complexity.” Another Maine favorite, Owl and Whale, offers a variety of bitters as well as shrubs and phosphates. “Phosphates make a drink sour and give it a zing, like what you’d get from a sour candy,” Graham explains, while vinegary shrubs add tang to beverages.
