As we enter into this new season, let’s sit for a few minutes and remember the men in our lives who’ve loved, driven, and inspired us to be hard workers, patient fathers, and people who give back! My grandfather was such a man. He was an example of loving patience, sacrifice, hard work, fun, and creativity. I miss him.
We’ve got quite a lineup of the best of the best for you in this issue. From refinished and restoring outdoor heirloom furniture, the only dog trainer you’ll ever need, incredible local chefs to father-son businesses and upscale landscaping that will literally give you goosebumps, we’re here to share their stories of growth, triumph and trials, and joy for doing what inspires them most.
It’s our hope that you see just how amazing it is to live here, work here, and live your best life in “these parts!” We’re here for it, and with this issue, we’re grateful for the men who partner with us and provide amazing services to you that make a difference for you and your chosen families.
Be a blessing, and live well. Don’t wait!
Happy Father’s Day!

Mitchell Homes, a family-owned and operated homebuilding firm headquartered in Richmond, opened their newest Design Studio at 14300 Sommerville Court in Midlothian. The firm moved its Richmond headquarters to the new location as well. The new design studio is the largest and most expansive in offerings of the company’s four showrooms. Features of the new studio include full-size kitchen vignettes, luxury and standard bathroom vignettes, and samples of upgrades for a new home’s interior and exterior.
VCU recently opened the Children’s Tower, an additional 500,000 square feet, to their downtown hospital. The new 16-story pediatric facility has 72 beds, 24 for intensive care and 48 for acute care. The emergency department has 21 rooms. Four vacant levels have been set aside for future use as the facility grows.
Ibo Pinar, the owner of Bell Greek restaurants in Midlothian, Chester, and Richmond, recently purchased More Than Greek in Mechanicsville. More Than Greek will keep its name and menu of sandwiches, plates of pasta, and desserts under Pinar’s ownership. He was interested in acquiring the restaurant because it has a menu similar to his Bell Greek concept. Since Bell Greek does not have a presence in Mechanicsville, Pinar can now reach a new customer base.

Artist Statement: I work predominantly in wood, glass, and acrylic paint. Working with wood is an old passion dating back to my father’s workshop. I enjoy revealing the natural color of woods and highlighting the wood grain. Many of my wood pieces are made of exotic woods because the colors are so unusual. Color plays an important part in my glass and acrylic paint art, too. How the color of glass changes with heat and how the shape of the glass catches the light is a constant fascination for me. The main focus of my acrylic art is the use of color, but application and flow are also important. The possibilities are endless.

Larry and Alan King Provide Locals with Dedicated, Trustworthy, Top-Notch Real Estate Services
If there’s one thing Larry King and his son Alan have in common, it’s their steadfast and eager commitment to work hard at whatever job they pursue. Both men began working at fourteen; Larry painted houses, and Alan started a lawn care business. After serving in the US Army for two years and successfully climbing up the grocery chain, Larry retired from Richfood as a top executive with 40 years in the field. Alan was well into a banking career at the Federal Reserve during this time. Since both men always had the desire to own their own companies, the father and son decided Larry’s retirement was the perfect opportunity to go into business together. “I was looking for a challenge, and Alan approached me to get into real estate, which we both liked,” Larry says. “Being in buying and negotiating most of my life and Alan in banking it seemed like a perfect fit.”
At the beginning of their venture, Larry and Alan gained experience and knowledge from some of the leading brokers in the Richmond area. Today, Larry King Realty holds a broker's license with ten designations. The team has been a five-star professional in customer service for ten years. As long-time residents of the area, Larry and Alan understand and know how to handle the market. "Our clients know we will get
them the maximum price for their home or get the best deal on buying a home," Larry expresses. "We try to be the best we can be every day. It takes years to be a great realtor, but only one call to get the right real estate team."
Away from real estate, Larry and Alan enjoy vacationing, boating, jet-skiing, fishing, boating, and playing competitive puttputt golf together. Larry has been married to his wife Mary for 54 years, and they love spending time with Alan and his family, his wife Kari, eight-year-old son Roger, and dog Clover. It takes a special bond to work and spend leisure time together, and Larry and Alan are the perfect examples of what it is to be a team. "The only challenge we have is challenging each other to be better every day, Larry says. From selling smaller homes to more luxurious ones, Larry King Realty always has the customer's best interest at heart. With seventeen years in the industry, they are now celebrating their 8th year in business together as Larry King Realty. Larry and Alan are proud of the professional, five-star rated company they built as they provide locals with the highest level of service. “We get along great together because we have the same goal. We both work hard and smart, which makes the job fun. We aim to make Larry King Realty the best it can be and give our clients world-class service. With two organized realtors, we can be at two places at the same time. The trust factor is one hundred percent! What a gift!” - Larry King
“A quick message of praise for Larry King Realty’s incredible service and personal friendship. I can't thank them enough for all their hard work, dedication, and the time they spent selling four homes for me over the years. If any of my friends ever need a company that goes the extra mile, I would highly recommend them.”
- Clifton Hicks“This is our third transaction with Alan King and the Larry King Team. We recommend them to everyone we know. They are detail-oriented, client-oriented, and dedicated to giving everyone they come in contact with the best experience possible. They know the real estate market in the Richmond and surrounding areas inside and out, and they work incredibly hard to make sure your sale or purchase is as stress-free as possible.”
- Christina SweeneyLEARN MORE: The Larry King team makes buying or selling your home a positive experience using their knowledge, honesty, and integrity. Larry and Alan King hold the following certifications: Certified Residential Specialist, Graduate REALTOR® Institute, Accredited Buyer’s Representative, e-PRO®, Seniors Real Estate Specialist®, the Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource, Seller Representative Specialist, Pricing Strategy Advisor, RENE, and the certified Real Estate Brokerage Manager.
“The only challenge we have is challenging each other to be better everyday.”

Matt Bricker, the owner of Coastal Patio Furniture, has been involved in charities since he was a young child in the Boy Scouts. As a father now, Matt makes it a point to set a good example for his children and always teaches them to give back. “I have learned to practice gratitude for every little thing in life, which has helped me continue contributing to others,” Matt says. “My wife and I are raising our children around giving back to others in need or less fortunate, whether it be clothes, toys, or food.” Just last summer, Coastal Patio Furniture organized a fundraising event where they auctioned off beautifully restored furniture, donating all the funds to Healing TREE, a non-profit organization specializing in mental health awareness.
This time, Matt wanted to contribute to the City of Richmond, a place he loves and formerly worked for. On a warm April day, the Coastal Patio Furniture team loaded a moving truck with approximately

“We hope this donation will benefit the recipient, which is the City of Richmond Parks and Recreation. They currently do not have any outdoor furniture around their community swimming pools, and we would love to provide areas to sit and relax for the incredible citizens of Richmond.” -
$20,000 of lightly used patio furniture and delivered it to Blackwell Community Center in Richmond to set up around their pool. Jerrod Booker, the Recreation Services Supervisor for the City of Richmond Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities, was in place to receive the donation.
The furniture Matt gave to the Blackwell Community Center came from a generous customer who recently bought new furniture from Coastal Patio Furniture. “We have made it our mission to donate every item of used furniture we get from our customers when they order new,” Matt says. “This way, they don’t have to worry about disposing of the furniture, and we can give it to organizations that need it while preventing old yet useable furniture from winding up in a landfill.” All of Matt’s customers are familiar with his goal to donate their former furniture, and they are just as happy to contribute to the cause.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, an astonishing twelve million tons of useable furniture is wasted annually. “All of us on earth are trying to limit excess and extend the life of our possessions,” Matt says. “Coastal Patio Furniture is contributing to the longevity of outdoor furniture by restoring or rehoming it.” Matt’s team of professionals maintains and revives patio equipment to its former glory at a fraction of the price it costs to replace. The mission of Coastal Patio Furniture is a good reminder that repairing and restoring high-end furniture is an affordable alternative to purchasing an expensive new set.

It has been one year since Paul Hearn took on a new venture and opened Dog Training Elite in Richmond. Midlothian Lifestyle got to catch up with Paul and learn about his company's growth and expansion plans. From adding staff to new certifications, Dog Training Elite Richmond is on the rise. "Our goal is for the Dog Training Elite name and logo to be the one everyone thinks of when they think of dog training," Paul says. "We are the last dog trainer you'll ever need because we are always elite, never mediocre!"
Since opening in April 2022, Paul added dog trainer Brooke Ball to his team to handle most of the clientele north of the James River. “Having Brooke has been a huge help, as she is an amazing person and dog trainer,” Paul says. Brooke’s talents not only rest in training but also in social media, significantly boosting Dog Training Elite’s presence in the online community. Paul intends to bring on another trainer later in the summer and an administrative assistant to help streamline business operations.
As part of a nationwide, family-owned franchise, Dog Training Elite receives
dedicated training, certifications, and continued education to stay up-to-date and relevant. Most recently, they became certified to offer Autism Support Training and Scent Work, a service that allows them to offer training for Diabetic Alert dogs. "When it comes to specialized or advanced training, certifications, and the correct resources, you achieve solid results that can potentially save a life," Paul explains.
As Dog Training Elite’s client base is rapidly expanding, Paul bought a cargo trailer to help accommodate equipment and supplies. He also plans to purchase a facility for their Elite Training Camp and specialized training. “We love dogs, and we love our community,” Paul says. “We want to help create peace in homes with dogs by teaching them leadership, structure, and good manners.” Whether for therapy, medical support, or basic training, Dog Training Elite is here to help improve the lives of Richmond community dog owners.

From the inside out, The Shaved Duck Restaurant's vibe directly reflects owner Joe Kmetz’s personal style. Simple by design yet easily customized for special occasions and events, the restaurant is polished and the decor modest, showcasing fresh ingredients and highlighting exceptional service. All about excellent food and drinks, The Shaved Duck offers a modern setting with neutral colors, raw materials, and natural light. In April, Joe sat down with Midlothian Lifestyle and Short Pump City Lifestyle publisher Aaron Swart with The Brand Artisan podcast and LCR Media’s Naylor Taliaferro. While cooking up and serving one of his outstanding dishes, Joe talked to Aaron and Naylor about the restaurant’s history, the revolving menu items, and hosting events at The Shaved Duck.
AARON AND NAYLOR: PLEASE TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND.
JOE: I grew up living and working in Midlothian and graduated from Midlothian High School and Virginia Commonwealth University. I was always invested in the local hospitality industry, working as a cook behind the scenes in the kitchen to the forefront as a busboy, server, manager, and all-around "friendly face.” Today, I lead our kitchen crew, organizing seasonal undertakings and new menu development, continuously working to develop our menu offerings and enhance service practices to create a complete, unique dining experience for local patrons and first-time visitors.
AARON AND NAYLOR: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN A RESTAURANT?
JOE: I always wanted to open a family-owned-and-operated business. After years of restaurant experience spanning all roles, I saw the opportunity to expose Southside diners to something different by way of upscale food and beverage without any pretense or formality requirement. The grand opening of The Shaved Duck Restaurant in 2017 was a dream come true for me.
AARON AND NAYLOR: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE NAME THE SHAVED DUCK FOR YOUR RESTAURANT?
JOE: My grandfather was an avid collector, and his shaved duck collection impressed me the most. My family and I solidified the name during a late-night brainstorming session over shots of whiskey and fond memories of my grandparents' duck memorabilia.
AARON AND NAYLOR: HOW DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR FAMILY TIES AND TRADITIONS THROUGH YOUR FOOD?
JOE: Simply put, I don’t! My interest in cultivating my unique palate led me down a path separate from my familial traditions. As a family-owned business, however, the menu concept is balanced to ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy.
AARON AND NAYLOR: WHAT KIND OF CUISINE DO YOU OFFER?
JOE: Our menu is inspired by rotating seasonal influences and executed in-house. In addition to highlighting different duck preparations, we offer house-made pasta dishes, hand-cut steaks, rotating seafood varieties, and signature brunch specialties. Classified as New American, we explore the fusion of traditional flavors & classic cooking techniques with foreign styles and elements. Our offerings include French, Mexican, Korean, and classic Southern-inspired menu options. I aim to introduce diners to ingredients and flavor profiles they might feel uncomfortable exploring.
AARON AND NAYLOR: DOES THE SHAVED DUCK HAVE ANY UNIQUE FOOD ITEMS OR BEVERAGES ON THE MENU?
JOE: Duck is the house specialty, but our menu features a seasonal variety of unique yet approachable variations of familiar dishes. We run specials featuring specialty items like game birds, octopus, and pork belly. We are known for our craft cocktails using original seasonal
“The restaurant’s name is an ode to my paternal grandfather and signifies the nature of my restaurant business venture.” - Joe Kmetz
recipes with all house-made components: syrups, shrubs, freshly squeezed juices, house infused-spirits, and our signature house bitters. We also offer a carefully curated wine selection and rotating seasonal craft beers on draft.
AARON AND NAYLOR: HOW DO YOU ACCOMMODATE THOSE WITH DIETARY RESTRICTIONS (FOOD ALLERGIES, GLUTEN FREE)?
JOE: Defined as a scratch kitchen, all bread, pasta, sauces, and desserts are executed in-house. We can adapt and customize our offerings to accommodate diners with special requests and restrictions, especially given advanced notice. Gluten free, vegetarian, and kid-friendly options are always available.
AARON AND NAYLOR: WHAT SETS THE SHAVED DUCK APART FROM OTHER RESTAURANTS IN THE AREA?
JOE: Our food quality contrasts with our casual ambiance. Our primary goal is to serve upscale food & beverage in a laid-back environment where people feel comfortable asking questions and trying new things. Many of our staff have been with the company for years, and they welcome first-time guests with understanding and patience.
AARON AND NAYLOR: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM ON THE MENU?
JOE: The Crispy Duck Leg is our longest-running staple entree and best exemplifies our brand. With approachable ingredients, this dish is unique and deliberate in its composition. All flavors and textures are meant to create a balanced final product and memorable dining experience.
AARON AND NAYLOR: WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND ORDERING AT THE SHAVED DUCK FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS?
JOE: Definitely duck. We offer a variety of ways to introduce first-time diners to our favorite protein. The Duck Burger (blend of ground beef and duck) is often an excellent choice for those interested in
trying duck for the first time, as the texture and preparation are most familiar. For those unfamiliar with duck, we also recommend anything with duck confit, as it is thoroughly cooked with fantastic texture and depth of flavor. For the duck connoisseur, our duck breast is the item to try.
JOE: The Shaved Duck is perfect for special occasions like date nights, anniversaries, family brunches, happy hours, holiday parties, private chef’s tables, networking events, and more! We offer something for everyone and can customize experiences depending on guest preferences. Our private dining room offers personalized, high-quality intimate dining experiences for any special occasion or event. Seasonal food and beverage-related events are hosted in this room and can seat up to thirty guests. We also offer a private Chef’s Table experience!
To book your next event or a private Chef's Table, please email Joe Kmetz at joe@theshavedduckrestaur ant.com or call 804-379-7505 for availability.

(Alan) went well above and beyond–shattering our real estate service expectations. Had we not engaged Alan and Larry King to sell our home, I never would have known how pleasant, knowledgeable, accessible, and responsible a real estate team could be. In our 15+ real estate transaction experience, this tandem’s ability to effectively deliver blows the doors off all the other big name real estate agencies we have used. Alan and Larry’s size and creativity enables them to excel and add value where others fail. We are fortunate to count ourselves among the hundred(s) of unbiased satisfied client reviewers. Well done gentlemen!
Andrew Grider always loved landscaping and gardening as a kid. A go-getter, he used to go door to door, searching for odd jobs like pulling weeds or mowing lawns. Throughout high school and college, Andrew worked for various landscape companies and credits them with teaching him invaluable lessons that undoubtedly took him farther into his landscaping career. "Even though I was going to college, I still had a passion for landscaping," Andrew says. "So, during my second year, I started Southern Sun Landscaping." With an unreliable Dodge Dakota, used tools, and a diet of canned food and ramen noodles, Andrew kick-started his business and never looked back.
The most important thing to Andrew about Southern Sun Landscaping is that he gets to do what he loves daily. He enjoys meeting new people and working on different-style properties with various landscaping needs. From selecting plants to leveling the ground, "you're working with a natural environment and bringing all that together at the end of the day is truly something I love doing." Andrew explains. Being a positive influence is equally as important to him, so Andrew works hard to inspire his team to get excited about what they do. He explains to them, "Every time you landscape,
you're transforming something." Andrew takes pride in providing exceptional products and services to his customers and an incredible work environment for his team.
Andrew says that doing quality work, keeping his word, and providing transparent estimates are the fundamentals of growing his business. Southern Sun Landscaping has a strong focus on delivering personalized experiences for its clients, from tailored maintenance and landscape packages to customized new installs. With dozens of five-star reviews and two professional accommodations from the United States Congress, Southern Sun Landscaping also contributes to Lawn & Landscape magazine, an industry-wide publication. "We just love what we do," Andrew says. "I'm focused on building a team that wants to leave every property looking better than when we arrived."
Southern Sun Landscaping is one of the top three landscaping companies in the United States for integrating technology into their company. New technology makes the company run more efficiently, from a user-friendly customer portal to online systems that generate estimates, invoices, and routes. Although already ahead, Andrew continuously strives to improve their technology. He is currently implementing a new system that's better than the version he already built. "I'm super excited to keep pushing the needle forward and continue to be an industry standard," Andrew says.
Andrew believes in giving back and aims to follow his Roanoke branch's lead. For the past three years, they have spent a vast
amount of time revamping an entire park and a row of homes in Roanoke. Andrew loves living in the Richmond area and is on a mission to help it flourish. In his spare time, Andrew loves being with his girlfriend Jasmine and starting up other companies. "The entrepreneurship spirit in me just won't die, and for me, it's fun!" Andrew says. "I get to create, and whether I'm creating a new landscape or new businesses, there is something inspiring about that."
To learn more about Southern Sun Landscaping, view the services they offer, and check out their locations, go to: southernsunlandscaping.com
"Southern Sun very recently did some landscaping improvements for us. Andrew’s knowledge, design ideas, and overall customer service were outstanding. The price was very reasonable. He personally managed his team’s start to ensure all features were started correctly. His team was terrific: hardworking, very personable, and he went the extra mile in doing the work. We will certainly look to Southern Sun for any future projects."
