designed and made today in Boise
Idaho has a history of clothing makers – from pioneers making their own, to commercial production of winter hats in Ketchum to western-wear hats in the Treasure Valley. From coats made in Caldwell decades ago to VOXN Clothing designed and made today in Boise. Meet four Idaho clothing makers.
Arin Arther – Screenprinted Textiles. Arin creates the designs, screen prints the fabric, and sews this elegant and sophisticated clothing. Arin has a Bachelor of Fine Art and found that textiles are her passion. She creates her images from nature and cityscapes. Doing this work for 20 years, Arin has been selling wholesale designs to museums and, in the last 10 years, selling clothing directly to consumers via shows and online. Arin’s goal is to have wearers of her clothing feel comfortable and beautiful in the timeless and seasonless designs. Because the clothing is made from all natural fibers it is durable and easy to care for. Instagram: @ArinArthurTextiles

Joni Packard Hess – Peepers Children’s Clothing (named after her daughter’s childhood nickname). Girls and their 12-inch dolls will love these dresses and outfits. Joni started sewing for her daughter when they lived in Randolph, Vermont. She made 5 or 6 dresses and took them to the town’s farmer’s market – and they sold out every Saturday. “I have a love for sewing. I am really picky and that’s why I have always kept the business small.” High quality fabrics are selected. Joni wants the clothing to be affordable for young parents. Nine years in the Treasure Valley, find Peepers at the weekly Capital City Public Market on The Grove and at Boise Art Museum’s Art in the Park. Sewing in between spending time with grandkids, Joni produces these adorable dresses! Instagram: @peeperschildrensclothing
Sam and Eric Stephenson - Fireside Pine Launched in July 2022 in Meridian, Idaho, Eric is a Veteran medic and x-ray tech of the Army National Guard, thus the focus on supporting Veteran non-profits. Sam and Eric have been fond of what nature does for them, “soaking in scenery and sunsets help us realize that there is more to life than the stresses of each day.” In stressful careers, they both sought reminders of the point of life and discovered that putting images on clothing and designing outdoor clothing came together to show the healing power of nature which then morphed into Fireside Pine. Bring your memories of happy outdoor experiences with you, through the American-made clothing you wear, that has finishing images and embroidery added in Idaho. September 2024 is the targeted opening of a Fireside Pine store in collaboration with Zero Dark Thirty Coffee in The Village, Meridian. firesidepine.com

The Cutting edge, the Vanguard, The Avante Garde; Who are the tastemakers in Interior Design and how do they know what people need and want? The answers may surprise you. The true trendsetters are the visionary few that not only take the popular pulse, but in an almost mediumistic way, predict the changes in taste that are about to occur. Fresh ideas must be both practical and intuitive and evolve from a pure source – a deeply internal source, inspired by experience coupled with ingenuity.
We are all subject to the daily soup we swim in; our milieu or environment, our métier or specialized area of activity. It is impossible to not be influenced by what is and what has come before. However, it is the job of taste makers to stretch into the future and determine what is missing, where the pain is, what lacks soul, and what has not yet been tried. It is not necessary to reach too far forward to tap the next level and often it means reaching back into the past to repurpose an outdated style trend. Clearly what must be original is the sum total of the finished idea; the birth of a new identity, something that feels obvious, necessary, and logical in its eureka! moment. The thing of beauty we know to be true when we see it: The Birken bag, granite counter tops, The Aubusson carpet, live edge tables. The thing whose time has come.
In tandem with raw inventive genius is the science of design. A pragmatic aspect of design invention which requires very specific knowledge applied to the human spirit. Spatial psychology, known as proxemics, plays a huge role in the design choices that are being looked at and implemented today. The contemporary design index leans toward promoting one’s personal

style, multi-cultural connections, and comfort that is personalized, practical, and pleasurable. Today, most people don’t care about impressing others or being impressed, they care about being surrounded by a nurturing spatial continuity that makes them feel relaxed and revitalized. Whether this is at home, work, or in a public space, this continuity fulfills the modern psychological need for place identity; a form of visual branding that creates a sense of comfortable and usable familiarity. Great design always addresses both form and function - that’s how you know it is great design. People want to feel a part of their environment and to be included in its raison d’etre. Awareness of complex social and spatial relationships and how they affect us is the key to creating compelling and efficacious trends in design.
So, what does the future hold? The words natural, artful, and colorful come to mind. We have only just begun to explore the psychology of color and how it relates to creating artful environments that affect moods, inspiration, and productivity levels. Aesthetics are more than just pleasurable; just as food nourishes the body, aesthetics are sustenance for the psyche. Environments that heal and promote health are a future wave that is coming to shore.
This ultra-aesthetic approach to design must have a real purpose, not just kitsch or fun, but a functional and ergonomic base that turns “user friendly” into a “user romance”. This dynamic relationship of opposites shapes these bio-environments like they were born not made. Eric Fromm first used the term Biophilia to describe a psychological orientation of being attracted to all that is alive and vital. In the same spirit, these vital forces will be utilized more and more in eco-design palettes (such as living walls with edible gardens, and multi-functional furniture made from plant materials) to enrich our lives from the inside out. 73rd Annual Ski Swap

DEALS FOR A CAUSE
“THE FEELING OF WEIGHTLESSNESS AS YOU’RE CARVING DOWN AN UNTOUCHED POWDER RUN IS… INDESCRIBABLE.”
For decades, Idaho has paved the way for snow-based recreation. From skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing and Nordic skiing, opportunity abounds. While the Gem State cannot claim the title of inventing skiing, not by a long shot, Idaho was the first in the United States to have what is now considered a “destination” ski resort, housed in the world-renowned Sun Valley. There are many theories about the origins of skiing, but one of the oldest pairs of “skis” ever found were about 8,000 years old and belonged to an ancient northern China civilization. Other reports indicate findings of similarly-aged skis in Russia and over 4,000 year-old skis found in Sweden, Norway, and Finland.
Wherever and whenever it was invented, Idahoans adore it. An average of 160,000 residents downhill ski in our state each year. And, of course, people travel from all over the world to experience outdoor recreation Idahostyle. Idaho-area ski resorts average nearly two million visitors in any given season.
“Every day is an adventure from start to finish,” shared Danny Jewell, Idaho local and avid snowboarder. He continued, “From the anticipation during the morning drive to make first tracks to the chili cheese fries at lunch and the magical feeling of pulling off your boots and enjoying your favorite apres-ski libation. A day on the mountain is exciting, relaxing, thrilling, and rejuvenating all in one and it truly incorporates each of your body’s senses.” He paused to reflect, “The feeling of weightlessness as you’re carving down an untouched powder run is… indescribable.”
Idaho’s many mountain peaks and incredible resort opportunities have made outdoor recreation one of the biggest contributors to the Gem State’s thriving economy. Not to mention the wonderful people you encounter and friends you make along the way. “The culture is all about having fun, challenging yourself, and making sure everyone makes it down safe, with a smile, at the end of the day.”
Perhaps one of the only downsides of being an avid skier or snowboarder, and likely one of the largest barriers to entry, is the cost of the gear. “Gear prices can

really add up,” explained Jewell. “My whole set-up is probably $1,200 but I know some people who spend that much on skis and boots alone.”
Fortunately, Idaho ski lovers recognized this decades ago and started the annual Ski Swap to share and trade gear without breaking the bank. Now in its 73rd year, the annual Expo Idaho Ski Swap boasts an impressive stock of over 25,000 items, many of which are community-donated and gathered from all over the Treasure Valley and beyond.
The Treasure Valley Ski Swap is hosted by the Bogus Basin Ski Education Foundation (BBSEF), an organization founded in 1967 (originally known as the Bogus Basin Ski Racing Alliance) to provide training and competition programs for aspiring young ski racers. The organization now includes mountain biking, free ski, and snowboarding programs.
“The annual ski swap is a great event for our community!” said Shannon Carrell, who has been on the organizing committee for the Ski Swap for over 30 years. “In addition to kicking off the ski season, this community event is a major fundraiser for our foundation. Net proceeds of this event provide about 35% of BBSEF’s annual budget.” But it takes a lot of dedication to put something like this on each year. “Over 1,700 volunteer hours go into this event! Members of the Bogus Basin Ski Patrol and Bogus Basin Ski Club also pitch in to help.”

Discover Creation:
Art and Wine in Harmony
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAMMY DE WEERD
In the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, nestled within the Hemel-en-Aarde wine region, lies a hidden gem that has garnered the admiration of wine enthusiasts and travel tourism planners alike: Creation Winery. This scenic spot, a few hours' drive from Cape Town, offers more than just exceptional wine; it is a feast for the senses, blending natural beauty, artistic expression, and culinary delights into a singular, unforgettable experience.
A LANDSCAPE OF HEAVEN AND EARTH Hemel-en-Aarde, translating from Afrikaans to "Heaven and Earth," aptly describes the region's breathtaking landscape. The valley's hills stretch toward the sky, creating a mesmerizing vista where heaven and earth seem to meet. This natural splendor sets the stage for Creation Winery, a place where the art of winemaking is celebrated in harmony with the land’s inherent beauty.

Creation isn’t just about wine; it’s also an artistic haven.
THE ART OF WINE AND MORE
Upon arriving at Creation Winery, we were immediately struck by the artistic vibe throughout the winery. Art is ever-present, from the meticulously crafted wines to the culinary masterpieces offered in the tasting room. They have long been renowned for their innovative wine and food pairing menus.
Creation isn’t just about wine; it’s also an artistic haven. I was mesmerized with how well the estate’s art and sculptures enhanced the sensory experience. The fusion of art and wine creates a multi-dimensional journey. This fusion of art and nature invites guests to explore and appreciate the creativity and innovation that defines Creation Winery.
A NAME REFLECTING SPIRIT AND INNOVATION
The name "Creation" honors the vineyard's unique winegrowing conditions and the innovative spirit that defines the winery setting. The vines climb the steep slopes of Babylon Toren Mountain, reaching altitudes of 300 meters above sea level. Here, they benefit from abundant sunshine, fertile clay soils, and cooling breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
In 2002, JC and Carolyn Martin decided to establish a winery in a secluded part of Walker Bay. JC was born and raised in Switzerland and Carolyn in South Africa, both come from pioneering winemaking families with three generations of experience across two continents. Their goal was to transform 40 hectares of untouched land into a model wine farm. Creation faced numerous challenges, particularly in cultivating healthy, resilient vines on previously untested land.
The quality of their first harvest in 2006, especially the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, hinted at the promise and potential of this burgeoning winery. Winning recognition in their very first year, the stage was set for future success.
WHAT SETS CREATION APART
In just two decades, Creation Winery has achieved remarkable success, recently securing a place among
the Top 10 in the prestigious 'World’s Best Vineyards' list, as voted by 500 global wine experts. Not only did it earn the 10th spot, but it also emerged as the highest-ranked wine farm in Africa. This accolade underscores the winery’s commitment to excellence and innovation in both wine and placemaking.
Creation's wines are celebrated for their elegance, balance, and structure. They offer full flavors and rich aromas lifted by the optimal levels of acidity and tannins that create vibrant wines that are seamless and easy to drink. The winery’s approach to pairing wines with food is meticulous, with menus that take 2-3 months to plan, ensuring each pairing enhances the dining experience. While we didn’t have time for a full meal, the rave reviews from those who have indulged in Creation’s culinary offerings – including our daughters on a visit earlier this year – speak volumes about the quality and care that go into each dish.
A GENUINE, RUSTIC CHARM
Despite its accolades and premium offerings, Creation Winery maintains a down-to-earth atmosphere that makes everyone feel special. It is a place where guests can enjoy personalized experiences, connect with the land, and celebrate the harmony of food, wine, art, and people. The winery offers genuine charm and rustic appeal, making visitors feel right at home.
AN ADVENTURE OF INNOVATION AND CHARM
Creation Winery is a shining example of creative thinking and fresh ideas. Creation truly lives up to its name and staying humble, down-to-earth and inviting. Each visit offers an experience where winemaking and culinary art meets stunning nature and human creativity. More than just a destination, Creation is a magical place.

HOW ONE MOTHER’S JOURNEY TRANSFORMED A COMMUNITY AND INSPIRED THOUSANDS TO AMPLIFY THE MESSAGE OF KINDNESS ACROSS IDAHO
10 YEARS OF KINDNESS
In September, the Community Kindness Movement (CKM), established in 2015 under the leadership of local mom Melissa Nelson, celebrates its tenth year of spreading kindness. This milestone, dedicated by Nelson to her daughter Makenna who is now a senior, continues to inspire efforts to combat suicide and

off the school bus. Despite Nelson's efforts to address the issue, the school did not resolve it.
"I prayed hard and was inspired by an article that covered the virtues of kindness," Nelson said. "It spoke about how genuine kindness can perform a change of heart in others."

bullying within and beyond the school district. This year, CKM is collaborating for the first time with the West Ada School District for Community Kindness Week, involving all 38 elementary schools and initiating children wearing yellow kindness shirts every Thursday. The initiative fosters awareness and partnership across various community sectors, promoting kindness through monthly themes and educational resources in schools and beyond.
CKM engages schools through kindness assemblies, showcasing videos of personal kindness stories. Last year they introduced a kindness theme song while this year they are collaborating with a videographer to compile narratives from Melissa and Makenna.
When Makenna was in second grade, she was bullied by a group of girls in her classroom. This continued and grew worse over several months. From being excluded from sleepovers to social isolation on the playground, the bullying left Makenna in tears daily as she got
A MOVEMENT BORN FROM HEARTBREAK
After a tough day, Nelson kept Makenna and her brother home from school to perform acts of kindness. Together, they bought yellow roses—Makenna's favorite—and anonymously delivered 26 single roses to the school, including to the girls who had bullied her. This simple act sparked the beginning of change. A few days later, Nelson learned from another parent that Makenna wasn't the only victim of bullying.
FROM PARADE FLOATS TO KINDNESS AMBASSADORS
After the school year came to an end Nelson was inspired to take kindness into pageantry as she held the title Mrs. Pocatello at the time. To encourage children to be kinder, she let kids do kind acts and share them on her website for a chance to ride the float with her for the Fourth of July parade. She made crafted iron-on kindness shirts
in red, white, and blue emblazoned with "Kindness Begins with Me."
“It was awesome having a parade float full of kids; that's how all of this began,” Nelson said. “It wasn’t something I decided to do one day; it came to me out of inspiration.”
In 2019, Governor Brad Little proclaimed the first Idaho Community Kindness Week. The goal is to expand beyond Idaho and have all states join in. Currently, CKM engages over 50 kindness ambassadors who promote weekly acts of kindness online and organize assemblies to foster community involvement. The movement's signature yellow shirts, originally inspired by yellow roses, have been funded for over 34,000 individuals, with businesses sponsoring and participating in events to amplify the message of kindness across Idaho.
Nelson plans to expand CKM with a new initiative called "52 Weeks of Kindness," offering weekly challenges for communities and schools.
